The Boy the Forest and the Desert
A lost warrior entranced by a witch in the forest. An ageing novelist haunted by the Madame of a mysterious brothel. Glass’s intimate opera tells the story of two men caught between loneliness and obsession.
A disturbing and compelling ghost story: a Governess struggles to protect two children from the evil influence of two ghosts. An opera in two acts with full orchestration and a cast led by Elizabeth Llewellyn.
A boy walks into the woods in search of knowledge, but finds desecration where he hoped to find truth. In this fairy-tale-like story, themes of initiation and of individual and societal responses to the environment are explored on several different levels at once (narration, song and physical theatre).

Death governs all life in these two short operas, lording over Savitri and lying in wait for the Wandering Scholar. One manages to cheat him, and the other tumbles unwittingly into his arms... but in the end, all is illusion, it is but ‘Maya’.
This competition happened 225 years ago. The participants were two famous composers and they wrote two operas in two different styles. Mozart and Salieri. Let’s see and judge it now.
