October – December 2012

Another new era for Arcola Theatre Arcola Theatre rises again as we reopen after a summer of renovations. An Arts Council Capital Grant has enabled us to add more foyer space, create a brand new café/bar and improve access for those with mobility challenges. We have also expanded and improved our rehearsal and upstairs work areas for collaborations with members of the Sustained Theatre network which promotes BAMER theatre. These much needed improvements and additions to our already iconic facilities herald a new era for Arcola. Our first production of the season, in the newly refurbished Studio 1, is North Wall Theatre’s Dead on Her Feet – a new play by noted playwright Ron Hutchinson (Rat in the Skull and TV’s Fatherland). At the end of October we reopen Studio 2 with a stunning new play – but i cd only whisper. Director Nadia Latif’s production combines drama and choreography to tell the story of a haunted African American Vietnam veteran. After that we are delighted to welcome back Kali Theatre with two productions as part of their 21st Birthday Festival: the play that started it all – Calcutta Kosher – as well as their latest endeavour – Kabaddi Kabaddi Kabaddi. Alongside these, there will be a host of activities including play readings and interactive installations. Keep an eye on our website for full details. We will be closing out the season with a musical that I will be directing – Sweet Smell of Success. Based on the classic film starring Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis, it will be its first major outing since it premiered on Broadway in 2002. With music by the late musical genius Marvin Hamlisch (A Chorus Line, They’re Playing Our Song, The Way We Were, The Sting), lyrics by Craig Carnelia (Is There Life After High School?) and a book by noted playwright John Guare (Six Degrees of Separation), this is a show that you won’t want to miss. In the meantime, in Arcola Tent we are presenting some of the most critically acclaimed productions from this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival. EH to E8 will hopefully be the first of a new annual event. It will be a wonderful first season in our refurbished building. Be sure to visit the new bar to sample our menu of local and organic food and drink specialities, even when you aren’t here to see a show. Mehmet Ergen, Artistic Director

Boris & Sergey’s Vaudevillian Adventure

Script in Hand

Rémy

Punch and Judy

1933, the Nazis force Paul Renner, typographer and creator of Futura font, into internal exile. 2012, a theatre company, who shall not be named, do the same to actor Toby Williams. There was meant to be a play. About Paul Renner. But this play does not exist. The performance that should have been Toby’s making has become his undoing. This is his chance to explain where it all went wrong. Script in Hand is the story of two forgotten men.

France falls in love with Napoleon, but when a hero betrays us, can we ever forgive? Rémy, a prisoner who doesn’t know exactly how old he is begins to tell his story. Everything I Own presents Rémy, a heart-warming solo show of dreams, wars and the English girl who stole a soldier’s heart.

The original comedy of a serial killer. Humans replace puppets but the story remains the same - what happens when one man decides the rules of society do not apply. A show to celebrate the 350th anniversary of Punch and Judy and explore the tradition, its absurdities, its comedy and its terror. Unnerving, funny, gleeful and not suitable for young children - has it ever been?
