Some say it’s the most challenging time for islanders. I cannot count the number of times folk said to me when I first moved to Lewis ‘if you can get through the first winter, that’ll be the true test of whether you’ll stay or not!” It can be pretty wild, it’s true, and dark. So, so dark. But there’s no doubt that there is beauty in our Hebridean winters. This coming February we will be celebrating the incredible dark skies that come with our darkest winter nights with a brand new festival led by An Lanntair, the Hebridean Dark Skies Festival. Did you know you can see the Orion Nebula from here – over 1,500 light years away? And these islands are also the very best spots in the UK for watching the incredible phenomenon of the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis). This new festival will take us out stargazing and aurora hunting, as well as a fantastic programme of talks

The Hebridean Dark Skies Festival is an ambitious and exciting new programme of events at An Lanntair and across Lewis, running from 8-21 February 2019. It will include talks and workshops by leading scientists, film screenings, live music, theatre, family events, stargazing, and much more. Programme highlights at An Lanntair include: groundbreaking silent film Wunder Der Schöpfung with a live score by Herschel 36; Space Ape, an award-winning children’s show by Andy Cannon; Whatever Gets You Through The Night, an evening of songs and stories with performers including Emma Pollock and Rachel Sermanni; and a special screening of The Rocket Post introduced by

BHO MHOCH GU DUBH: DAWN TO DARK MHAIRI LAW AND ALEC GALLOWAY The first exhibition leading up to the Centenary of the Iolaire disaster focuses on light and dark, actual and metaphorical, combining Mhairi Law’s long photography exposures of the Beasts of Holm reef with Alec Galloway’s stained glass and beach glass works’ - The title refers to the ‘dawn’ of the Armistice and the darkness of the morning of the 1st January 1919.

Composed by Lewis-born musician Iain Morrison, whose great-grandfather was among those drowned, and presented with pioneering Scottish artists Dalziel + Scullion, Sàl (Saltwater) has its roots in ceòl mòr (the classical music of the pipes). This piece will experience the journey of war and its aftermath, for those leaving and those at home. The tragic journey of the Iolaire, the boundless grief and the scale of loss within such a small Island SAT 12 JAN 8PM community.
