Iolaire 100 : exhibition workshops

Iolaire 100 is a collection of portraits painted by Margaret Ferguson of sailors lost and saved on the Iolaire. The collection, supplemented by other artefacts, evokes a powerful human, personal and individual dimension as well as embodying the dreadful scale of the tragedy. School visits will include a tour of the exhibition, learning from archive material from Tasglann na Eilean, discussion and drama exercises, and a portraiture activity. Workshops delivered in partnership between Tasglann nan Eilean and An Lanntair Talks by the artist Margaret Ferguson are available to Secondary Art and Design classes. Contact us to arrange a date. iolaire : educational resource film

An Lanntair has commissioned an audio visual schools resource on the Iolaire disaster which is available for schools to download. The 30 minute video charts the events leading up to the disaster, the disaster itself and its aftermath on the community at large. The resource is based on a wellresearched slide presentation compiled by Roddy Murray. The digital resource is available to download at: http://lanntair.com/iolaire-centenary-educational-resource/

Create a soft circuit using textiles, conductive thread and electrical components. In this class you will work with Artist, PhD student and Textile Lecturer Lucy Robertson to create a textile felt bird with a light up eye and on/off switch wing. Using basic sewing skills you will follow a circuit diagram printed on the textile bird adding an LED, battery pack and on/off switch. Using soft materials students will learn how they can combine design and science to create a basic soft circuit. This will highlight the flow of energy around a circuit from a coin cell battery and demonstrate how we can create an on/off switch with snap fasteners. The workshop will help you fulfil CforE Experiences and Outcomes for both Expressive Arts and Sciences. Live presenters will take you and your pupils on a unique deep space journey unlike anything you will have encountered before, a truly immersive 360° cinematic experience which can help consolidate many aspects of the science curriculum. Primary Schools (Max 40 pupils + staff per session): Includes the fulldome movie ‘Space Shapes’; this wonderful short movie discusses different round shapes in space and is great fun for young audiences. We also take the children back in time to the Apollo Moon landings, fly through the rings of Saturn and go on an alien hunt! All interspersed with songs about the solar system and the stars. We then search for the bears in the sky (and other animals) using our virtual constellation artwork and we finish with a spectacular shower of shooting stars!! Secondary Schools (Max 30 pupils + staff per session): Includes elements of astronomy, physics, astrobiology (are we alone?) and spaceflight, including information on current space probes & rovers. All taught at a level appropriate for the age of the pupils. Highlights include flying through Saturn’s rings, landing a rover on Mars and diving underneath the ice on Jupiter’s moon, Europa, to search its vast ocean for signs of life. Festival of dark skies : space ceilidh workshops with science Ceilidh

Come and explore the patterns of the sun, moon and planets in our solar system with the award-winning Science Ceilidh’s scientist-musicians! We’ll be getting musical with physics, creative with space developing new astronomical dances and finally getting imaginative about our own futures! There’ll also be the opportunity to share your space dances and learning with an assembly to the rest of the school. Learning outcomes: Exploring the wonder, patterns & movements of the sun, moon and planets (SCN 0/1/2-06A); Revising the physics of sounds vibrations to make simple music (SCN1/2-11A); Working as a team to express concepts creatively through dance (EXA 0/1/2-09A) and perform this (EXA 0/1/2-01A); Discuss the importance of curiosity & creativity across all careers & health and wellbeing. Depending on the size of your school, Space Ceilidh can run up to 4 classes (50 – 60mins) for P4-7 and a sharing assembly for the whole school at the end of the day. For smaller schools, they can work with pupils for a morning or afternoon session. They’ll leave you with reflection follow-on worksheets to consolidate learning. Island voices : Edinburgh quartet spoken word workshops with author Ron Butlin

The Edinburgh Quartet will be visiting Stornoway as part of their tour of a new commission by composer Peter Longworth. The piece combines music and spoken word, and is unique in that it will react to each local community’s sense of place through new texts being written in each location. They invite Higher or Advanced Higher pupils to take part in writing workshops with author Ron Butlin, and be the voices of their community. Ron Butlin will lead two workshops with the pupils to explore and develop the spoken word sections, which will be integrated into the final piece to be performed at An Lanntair. Pupils will have the option to perform their spoken-word piece live with the Edinburgh Quartet on An Lanntair’s stage. The sessions will run out-with school time. Edinburgh quartet : Treasure island

This workshop with the Edinburgh Quartet explores passages from Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, a novel written after the author came across his own son drawing a treasure map, and uses these as a starting point for creative thinking. With the quartet, the pupils will explore how different soundscapes created by the four instruments of the string quartet can evoke emotions ranging from elation to fear, and using these they will work together to create their very own treasure map and journey across the island to find the hidden treasure.
