WHAT’S THE NEWS The RV Resort and Summer Improvements

SPRING 2015

MEMBER MESSAGE

W

hat a great winter season we have had! With an expanded focus on showing gratitude for our members, the Resort is working to improve the membership experience. One aspect of this effort was the inaugural Member Winter Weekend. This three-day event was based on member feedback and designed to say “Thank You” to our members. We have two new additions to the team that will allow us to better serve our members. Jonathan Williams has been with the Resort for five years and will have responsibilities in both the Membership and Legal departments. Kalyn Whitacre has been with the Resort for 14 years and will replace Renita Eppler who has taken a position with Property Management. Join me in welcoming Jonathan and Kalyn and wishing Renita success in her new role. With the Winter Season ending on Sunday, March 22 it is time to start planning your summer vacation. The Resort has been working to develop a summer full of exciting events for our members. The

summer will kick off on Friday, May 1 with the Angel Fire RV Resort soft opening and the Kentucky Derby Weekend. Please read “What’s The News” for more details. We greatly appreciate your membership and look forward to seeing you this summer.

SO YOU KNOW NEW MEMBERSHIP CARDS Please remember that all members will obtain new memberships cards in 2015. We hope you have enjoyed the three year cycle started in 2012. This cycle was established in direct response to feedback from members. Our goal is to ensure your membership experience is satisfying. Please refer to the expiration date on your card to determine when your card expires.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT The Cycle of LIFE By Lewis Gaffney I am often asked how I got in to cycling. Without a doubt, my cycling career began in Angel Fire. Angel Fire’s trails offer amazing views, diverse terrain and are so accessible from anywhere in town. In 2005, Angel Fire Resort hosted the Mountain Bike World Cup as well as the Cross-Country World Cup. Though Angel Fire Resort is well known for their gravity park, the Cross-Country competition is what stood out to me. The best endurance athletes of our time commented that the course was one of the best they had ever competed on. Knowing that I lived in a place of world-class trails excited me to take the next step and begin training. I now find myself riding that same course, wondering how my pace compares to that of some of the riders that inspired me to take up the sport. Angel Fire has exploded on to the gravity bike scene, becoming one of the top ten bike parks in North America. Angel Fire’s cross country trails and greenbelt trails are of equal quality and are less intimidating for most bikers. For me, these trails have become the perfect place to train. My favorites are the steep climbs that challenge me to push

myself. I can then head to Angel Fire Bike Park to build downhill skills, needed as a cross-country rider. My biggest improvements in skill development, have come from training in the Angel Fire Bike Park and surrounding trails. From the beginning of my career, I was inspired by the best in the world, coming to ride in Angel Fire, my home town. Since then, the trails have helped me develop as a competitive rider, leading me to several national championships with my team, top individual finishes and an individual championship.

MOUNTAIN RESERVATIONS 575-377-4320

WHAT’S THE NEWS The temperature is rising and spring is nearly upon us, which is the perfect time to make a few more turns on the softer snow. Our last day of skiing and snowboarding is set for Sunday, March 22, and we expect the busiest time on the mountain to be the second week of March. April tends to be a quiet time in Angel Fire, and as we transition to summer more activities become available. In addition to our regular offerings, we are proud to announce the opening of our new RV Resort.

Go Rvin’

Some places start with RVs and call it a resort. Angel Fire Resort is starting with the resort and adding the RVs. The new luxury motorcoach resort will open this May for year-round operations. Located on meadowland at the foot of Carson National Forest, the 35-acre resort will feature 102 paved lots, each appointed with cable, wifi, water, sewage and power hook-ups. Each lot will be large enough to handle the slide-outs of today’s largest recreational vehicles. Guests of the RV Resort will have access to a clubhouse with community spaces and a private event room, a bathhouse with laundry and bathing facilities, the gatehouse where sundries and supplies will be available, fire pits and a community hot tub. As the landscaping takes shape throughout the summer, you will see on-property activities added that will include a putting green, pickle ball courts, shuffleboard, bocce ball courts and a fenced-in dog run. Outside of the gates, guests will have convenient access to the wide array of outdoor recreation amenities including golf, horseback riding, cycling, hiking, fine dining, fishing and more. The RV Resort will also have its own private access to Carson National Forest, where visitors can bike and go hiking. For more information, call 888-976-1541 or visit angelfireresort.com.

Go Golfin’ The Angel Fire Golf course is set to open on Thursday, May 21 this year, with a full schedule of tournaments and events planned

throughout the season, including the popular Platinum Members Tournament on Friday, May 22. If you are feeling a bit rusty, you can warm up your swing on Wednesday, May 20, when the driving range opens. The driving range will be undergoing a set of improvements under the direction of Joe Distefano. This will produce a more spacious and improved hitting area, which will be able to better accommodate clinics and tournaments. The Tennis Center is set to open at the beginning of May this year, with Brett Hall returning as the Tennis Pro. He will be leading the Summer Tennis Kickoff celebration on Saturday, June 20, with a variety of clinics and a social mixer.

Go Bikin’

Angel Fire Resort has some of the best downhill mountain biking in North America and is set to open on Thursday, May 14. The certified instructors will be able to guide you through the skills necessary to ride the world class trails of Angel Fire Bike Park. The Bike Park Trail Crew completed a gentle way down from the top of the mountain called Easy Street last year. This is a great introduction to mountain biking and suitable for all levels of biking experience. The Bike Park will also host a variety of competitive events, including the USA Cycling Pro GRT June 19-21, which will be an internationally recognized competition.

The Platinum Advantage Platinum Guest Cards are now good for five years. This change was made in an effort to provide Platinum members a greater value and to make purchasing Platinum Guest Cards common sense. With a Platinum Guest Card your guest can receive a 31 percent discount off of ski lift tickets and a 46 percent discount off of a round of golf. Perhaps the best news is that you don’t have to be with your guest for them to enjoy these benefits. Contact the Membership office at 575-377-4260 for details.

MIKE’S CORNER I can’t believe we’re talking about spring! I do love the snow, but must admit that thinking about getting back on the golf course is making me antsy. It’s time for us to solicit candidates for the AAFPO Board of Directors with three board member positions open this year. Participation in the board is a fantastic way to influence what’s happening at the Resort and in the community. Petitions to run are available at aafpo.org and we are happy to help you with your petition if you are out of town. The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, April 1. The election will be held in May and will held through electronic voting. Please make sure the membership office has your current email address. The dates for AAFPO Weekend are set for June 5-7. On behalf of the AAFPO Board, I hope you’ll plan to come visit during that time. It is a great way to make new friends, meet new members and catch up with old friends.
