Director’s Chair

Americade turned 35 this past June and like the first event in 1983 (“Aspencade” then) it remains in many people’s opinion one of the premier touring events in the U.S., and perhaps the world. While we’ve seen the motorcycle industry change and evolve during that time, Americade has consistently focused on the love of road riding (touring).

I’m happy to say that the motorcycle industry seems to be falling in love with touring again. At Americade 35, Yamaha introduced their new, and long awaited touring flagship, the Venture. With much fanfare and a live worldwide audience, Yamaha literally unveiled their remarkable new bike onstage at the Rider Opening Celebration. This “global reveal” was a first for Americade, and those in the audience witnessed something special. And, it is widely rumored that a brand new Honda Gold Wing will be available for demos at the 2018 Americade. Touring is back! Americade 35 also hosted the North East Drill Team Championships. Although scheduled to compete on Tuesday evening, the weather didn’t cooperate. Instead they put on an amazing demonstration on Wednesday. We look forward to having them return in 2018! We also introduced more new Guided and UnGuided Minitours than in many years, taking people on superb routes and to even better restaurants. Yes, we’re committed to keeping Americade “fresh,” so look for even more new rides/events in 2018. While we look forward to next year, I think it’s worth taking a moment to look back on some of the more memorable stats from the prior 35: • Nearly $1,000,000 in prizes have been awarded at Americade’s Friday Night Spectacular! • Americade guides have led over 60,000 people on beautiful NY and VT tours, and approximately 35,000 people have gone on Americade’s exclusive boat cruises. • Over $500,000 for charities has been raised. • A handful of Americade volunteers have volunteered for Every Single Americade!! • A handful of attendees have come for all 35 years! • After 35 years, Americade is closing in on hosting its 2 millionth motorcyclist! • We’ve witnessed proposals, hosted weddings, held “Americade Babies” (born 9 months after Americade), and shook hands with 3 generations of riders coming to Americade. Since 1983, we’ve always been the event that is committed to positive motorcycling, quality events, and a family friendly atmosphere. That’s certainly no accident, and our 200+ volunteers and full time, year round staff are working to make it an event that will be around another 35 years. Ride Safely, Christian

Americade 35 wowed crowds all over the area! After 35 years of bringing the world’s largest motorcycle rally & convention to the shores of Lake George, we’ve learned a thing or two about how to put on a good time for the folks cruising up for the week. Inside these pages, you’ll learn about the Events & Activities that kicked off at Fort William Henry HQ on Monday evening with the Opening Day Events and the global reveal of Yamaha’s 2018 Venture. In addition to hosting the Opening Day Events, Fort William Henry was also the site for many other activities throughout the week: Factory Demo Rides, Comedy Shows, Country Shindig, Fashion Show, Skills Challenge, Hospitality Tent, Vintage Garage, Americade University, Motorcycle Judging, Stunt Shows, and so much more! Americade’s EXPO at Million Dollar Beach opened to excited shoppers on Tuesday morning. The EXPO hosted hundreds of vendors and live entertainment all week. Adjacent to the EXPO was free motorcycle parking and a coat & helmet check provided by the folks of Moreau Community Center and the Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Southern Adirondacks.

Around the region, Americade hosted thousands of motorcyclists in Guided and Unguided MiniTours to some pretty spectacular locations. To help riders hone their skills ...the New York Motorcycle Safety Foundation offered their popular instruction course atop Prospect Mountain. In addition to MSF’s program, professional instructors offered skills training at FWH which included a friendly Cone Course. To round out the riding instruction, DirtDAZE also had times available with professional adventure riders for folks to work on their off-road skills. Americade’s Concert Series at the Festival Commons spanned two nights and hosted five fantastic bands. Just down the road Americade’s Adventure Bike Rally, DirtDAZE, opened on Wednesday. DirtDAZE offered factory demos, rider training, exciting rides, vendors, onsite camping, evening bonfires, and plenty of grub! Opening Day Events

First-time and Seasoned Attendees alike showed up for the informative What’s New & What To Do meeting at the Fort William Henry Conference Center. There they learned the insider tips and tricks to get the most out of their Americade Experience. A host of Volunteers were on hand to answer questions about the multitude of Events & Activities on the week’s schedule. If folks weren’t able to make it on Monday, Thursday was a second chance to catch up on what was going on for the rest of the week!

Just a few steps away the evening’s main event, Americade’s Opening Celebration, was getting started under the Big Top Tent! Dessert ticket holders picked up scrumptious desserts & coffee or tea, then found a seat as the show began.

Afterward, the RoadRUNNER Crew hosted a delicious Prime Rib Buffet in the FWH’s White Lion Room for Dinner by the Lake ticket holders. Diners enjoyed a lavish meal, great conversation, and fun prizes in one of the most picturesque locations in Lake George.

For the first time ever, at Americade’s Opening Celebration, the world got to see the new Yamaha Venture. The highly anticipated “reveal” was streamed live globally, making the celebration even more special.

Comedy Shows Three nights of laughs with four funny fellas at Fort William Henry’s Towers Hall. Wednesday & Saturday opened with the playful irreverence of Ray Harrington. Headliner on those nights was Alonzo Bodden, winner of NBC’s Last Comic Standing. Alonzo took the stage and got down to the business of looking for the fun in every situation & story. He riffed with the audience to the delight of all in attendance. Thursday crowds welcomed newcomers to the motorcycle scene, Ross Bennett & Nathan Macintosh. Nathan’s tirade of wacky observations tuned up the crowd for Ross’ homegrown humor. In addition to all the laughs, lucky audience members left the show with great prizes from Yuasa (Wednesday & Saturday) and Tourmaster (Thursday)!

Americade University Ameri-U brought informative, current, and interesting speakers, seminars, and workshops to the Fort William Henry Conference Center Tuesday - Friday. We covered everything from basic motorcycle maintenance to high tech communications systems, getting on the road as a solo rider to the strategies of group riding, finding the best cruising roads around to adventure riding around the world. In the evenings, we pulled in some ringers to entertain and inform the crowd with their stories. On Tuesday, Mark Tuttle reminisced about a lifetime of motorcycling, how he became a better rider, and the trips he still has to make. Fred Rau “took us to the movies” on Wednesday as he reviewed the good, bad, and ugly ways motorcyclists have been portrayed in television and movies over the past 60 years. On Thursday, the audience traveled full circle with John Flores as he recounted the first transcontinental trip across the US on a motorized vehicle made by George A Wyman in 1903 on a “motor bicycle” in 1903. John was so inspired by Wyman’s story---that he repeated the trip in 2016 on a Zero DSR! There was so much information to take in during the week...we encouraged Americaders to take in as many “classes” as possible (in between riding, shopping, eating...oh, and sleeping) and become a “Roads” Scholar. By Attending at least 1 Seminar and 1 Featured Speaker...folks could enter to win saddlebags from New York Central Mutual Insurance! This year we had two winners: • Jeannie Denson - Groton, VT • Debbie Lynch - Galloway, NJ Thanks to all our presenters (full list on americade.com) and NYCM for keeping the learning fun! Make sure to keep time in your 2018 schedule to stop by Ameri-U!

Fashion Show Harley-Davidson, Honda, Indian, Slingshot, Tourmaster, and Yamaha pulled the latest & best fashions from their closets on Thursday evening. Ameri-models had a great time as they strutted down the catwalk in the coolest motorcycle apparel around. They modeled everything from Ts & accessories to leathers, jackets & more! The garments were fun to wear, comfortable, stylish, and functional--all the things riders need when out on the road. The audience couldn’t wait for the much anticipated door prize drawing...where all the fashions shown on stage were given away to folks in the crowd!

Skills Challenge Slow & Steady Wins the Race That’s never been more true than during Thursday’s Skills Challenge in the Fort William Henry’s Demo Area. Michael Gentile of East Haddam, CT showed his skill at lagging behind during the S-L-O-W Race. He maneuvered his 2003 1500cc Harley-Davidson Roadking over the finish line last---putting him in the #1 spot for the day! Dale & Joan Darling of Derry, NH showed us all what a 2016 BMW R1200 GS and years of riding together can do in a competition. Knowing each other well can make all the difference when practicing precision riding with a passenger aboard. Their patience, persistence & skill paid off with a win in the Golf Ball Balance! Congratulations Folks!

• Check out the Accommodations Guide on the preceding pages for motorcycle friendly places to stay. • Don’t just call the first few places in the guide; they tend to get called the most because they’re at the top of the list. • Call the Chambers of Commerce (listed below) for recommendations. • Many small hotels don’t open up their reservation system until April, so a call to them then will often have success and a lower rate. • There are many small towns within a 25 minute ride and they tend to have more available space and lower rates. • The list on right of this page estimates mileage from Lake George to each of the towns with participating properties.

Festival of Lights Just as it was getting dark on Thursday evening, bikes began lining up for the Light Parade that wound it’s way through Lake George Village and back to FWH for Judging.

Decorative Lighting Winners

Spectators grabbed a good spot in the village and at the FWH Demo Area so they could catch sight of the best & brightest in motorcycle lighting.

Americade Concert Series

Americade’s 3rd annual Concert Series capped off Americade Week with 2 big nights of music. The Weekend Rock Gods & The Grift entertained crowds during the Friday Night Spectacular in the Festival Commons. The bands played before and after the fireworks display over the lake. With plenty of seats for everyone, and a beautiful, clear night---everybody had a comfortable place to hang out for the evening. Saturday evening’s concert opened with the Texas Swing & Boogey-woogey sounds of the Commander Cody Band. Next up--- the “outlaw style” country rock band, The Mallet Brothers, tuned up the crowd for the weekend headliner---one of the most famous Southern Rock bands of all time, Molly Hatchet!

2017 Great Give aways!

Folks came in from near and far, and lined up to see if they were one of the lucky winners of thousands of dollars in door prizes! Chances are, if they signed up for any of Americade’s Activities & Events...they had a pretty good chance of winning something during the week---including event door prizes and Daily Door Prizes! Folks could win Daily Door Prizes just for being at Americade and dropping their specially marked door prize ticket (gotten when they signed up at Americade Registration) at the Fort William Henry Activities Room. Names were drawn by 1 pm every day and posted at Americade’s Head Quarters & Expo. Daily Door Prizes were donated by Expo Vendors, and by local Businesses, Restaurants & Attractions. In addition to being entered to win the daily prizes...folks had the chance to win a Major Door Prize at the Friday Night Spectacular (see pg #39) or Saturday’s Party on the Pier (see pg # 40). All for just signing up! Below is a list of the generous contributors. Please be sure to stop by the next time you’re at Americade!

Cone Course Registered Americaders had an exclusive chance to receive one-on-one guidance from professional riders: Mike Gentile, Rob Naszady, Erica Corley, and Bob Sivori. The Cone Course was set up in the Fort William Henry Demo Area for 7 opportunities throughout the week to help folks work on their riding technique. Instructors demonstrated basic low speed motorcycle control maneuvers (that work on any bike) as they rode through various cone patterns. Participants learned new skills and broke bad habits to become better riders. After the lesson, everybody had the opportunity for a little extra practice on the Cone Course. Fun was had by all and people loved the sense of accomplishment that came from a few minutes of professional instruction and course time. We look forward to see how far they’ve come by next June!

Adk Eagle Flyer Zip line Ghost Tour Late Monday - Friday, folks had the opportunity to commune with the paranormal on the grounds of Fort William Henry (and beyond). As seen on TV’s “Ghost Hunters” show, the historic (and haunted?) FWH came alive during an evening stroll in search of spirits, sprites & ghouls. There was nothing as exhilarating as plummeting from the top of French Mountain for nearly 4,000 feet at speeds of 58 mph! Or, if folks wanted to take their time and glide to the ground, there was a control to take things at a slower pace.

The curious saw skeletons, musket balls, and the sites where several memorable events occurred...and some say they felt a chill up their spine.

Folks who took the plunge had a unique bird’s eye view of Lake George and the Adirondack Mountains as they soared toward the landing at Wild West Ranch.

Friday Night Spectacular It’s easy to see why Friday was Americade’s BIGGEST night of the week: Outstanding Food: It was the best menu ever with Tequila Lime Chicken, Grilled Flank Steak, Maple Cured Pork Loin and all the sides folks could fill their plate with. People’s Choice Judging: One stop shopping to see all the Best Bikes of the week... according to our Judges..and the opportunity to vote on Your Favorite! This year William Ruth of Pittsburgh, PA took home the top honors for his “Gettysburg Tribute” 2008 1800cc Honda GoldWing w/Trailer. In addition to People’s Choice, other Awards were handed out for some of the events that occurred earlier in the week: Poker Run, Best of Show, and Distance & Longevity--Tourmaster was on hand recognizing all the recipients with special prizes. A special drawing was held for all the participants who completed the Amazing Ride and had a chance at ScalaRider’s prize.

38

Prizes: Over $30,000 given away (see next page for contributors & winners), including a brand new Harley-Davidson® Dyna®Low Rider®! See the next page for a list of Awards handed out and lucky Major Door Prize Winners! Music: The Weekend Rock Gods, with their classic rock sound, opened the evening festivities as folks arrived, voted on People’s Choice Judging, got their food & settled in for all the action. Following the Prizes & Awards, The Grift, an indie-band with tight vocal harmonies & witty lyrics, kept the crowd pumped for the rest of the night. Did we mention the Fireworks?!? Pyrotechnics set the sky over Lake George ablaze in what some have said is the best show they have ever seen! For those who wanted to be even closer to the action...they jumped aboard the MinneHaHa for a cruise around the bay..right under the fireworks!

Sensational Saturday Young & old turned out early to decorate their bikes and get ready to take to the streets with some mighty fine machines. Some of the Red Knights headed up the formation, followed by some of the Vintage Garage Crew, and a whole gang of folks festooned with bright balloons. Bringing up the rear was World Champion Stunt Performer, Teach McNeil. To the delight of those gathered to watch the parade, Teach zoomed around, popped some wheelies, did some donuts, and defied gravity with his high speed (front braking) stops. The parade route brought folks straight to The Party on the Pier on the Steamboat Docks for food, prizes, and entertainment. Ben & Jerry’s of Lake George was on hand to scoop up free Ice Cream! Folks who had a meal ticket for the Party on the Pier were treated to a fun BBQ under a huge tent---right next to the lake! The thrills kept coming as we gave away thousands in prizes right there on the pier (Rotary Drawing pulled later in the evening at Americade’s Concert Series at the Festival Commons).

What tour sells out in only 3 days, EVERY YEAR? Every fall, the Rolling Thru America Tour Company offers a new September tour for ONLY 100 people. And every year, it sells out in a matter of days. This year, Rolling Thru America took place across the border in Canada’s Laurentian Mountains for “Rolling Thru Quebec.” Rolling Thru America is known for its top-shelf meals, and superb guided rides, and Rolling Thru Quebec delivered. This lucky group stayed at a five star hotel in a quaint and beautiful town called

Montebello. The hotel (the world’s largest log structure) has been home to Presidents and Prime Ministers, and it rolled out the red carpet for us. The rides took the group deep into the mountains near Quebec’s fabled Mont Tremblant ski area, as well as the lush river valleys north of Gatineau. Miles of twisty roads, quaint lakeside towns, vineyards, and dramatic views of the nearby mountains wowed the group. Rolling Thru Quebec meals were prepared by award winning chefs at several stunning destinations, including one that was accessed by an airborne tram to its impres-

sive and elegant lakeside location. After a moment’s hesitation, people climbed aboard the tram and loved the ride! Interested in going? Rolling Thru America Tours span 4 days, and include lodging at stunning locations, several days of guided rides on wonderful routes, and 7 amazing meals. They DO sell out very quickly, and are 90% filled by prior customers, but a few first-timers luck out every year. Give yourself a shot at an “RTA” tour by visiting rollingthruamerica.com/contact and adding yourself to the email list. Good Luck!

D irt D aze D oubles ! The 2nd DirtDaze, Americade’s adventure bike rally, doubled in size(!) in 2017. It’s our dirt-road rally, taking place 6 miles away from Lake George. Like Americade, it features many events and attractions tailored to adventure bike enthusiasts; factory adventure bike demos and vendors, world class off-road training and guided adventure bike rides throughout the Adirondacks and Vermont, and more. We saw many curious Americaders at DirtDaze (at the Painted Pony Ranch), some on adventure bikes (eg, BMW GS 1200’s, Suzuki VStroms, etc) and some on purely pavement-only bikes (Gold Wings, Street Glides, etc). Your Americade wristband gained you access to the whole venue, and many spectators took in the sights of riders challenging themselves on the huge obstacle courses. Among the most popular events were, like Americade, the Guided Rides. However these take riders deep into the forests of the Adirondacks and Vermont, to interesting lunch destinations at the end of dirt roads. While Americade tours stick strictly to smooth pavement, DirtDaze allows us to introduce a whole new world to those on adventure bikes with knobbies.

44

americade.com

Can you, a pavement-only rider, benefit from DirtDaze? Yes! Consider the excellent Rider Training (for all skill levels) at DirtDaze. Training on dirt absolutely improves your pavement riding skills, and is more forgiving of mistakes than those made on pavement. Heck, even a seminar (free with your Americade wristband) can help. Here’s a comment I grabbed off Facebook: A shout out to Ken Condon -- after attending his dirt riding seminar, at Americade University I totally reframed my dirt-riding thinking. I did a bunch more reading, put some knobbies on my Kawasaki KLR, and got in the dirt to excellent effect. This weekend I rode 2-up on my Super Tenere on loose gravelly roads to an amazing site...something I would have passed on in the past, because I found dirt riding terrifying. I wasn’t even nervous getting up the hills (or back down them). Thank you Ken for opening up new experiences. - Kate Murphy So, do yourself a favor and come out to DirtDaze to see the goings on. You’ll get a chuckle, and you just might be one step closer to discovering a whole new world on (dirt) roads you’ve never explored.

45

Catch up with Americade’s Isle of Man - Amazing Classics ! One of the nice things about semi-retirement is that you get to check off things on your bucket list. For over 40 years I’ve wanted to visit to the Isle of Man (an island between England and Ireland) to watch the legendary motorcycle road-racing. But their big TT is in June, around Americade, so I’ve never made it. Well, they have another race week at the end of August called the Classic TT which focuses on classic motorcycles. A friend of mine has attended every year for over a decade and invited me to join him! What a show! I recommend it to anyone who likes motorcycles or even a fascinating environment. The fact that race-bikes were hurtling down narrow roads past trees and churches at speeds up to 180 kmh (that’s over 110 mph!) was secondary to the amazing motorcycles in the parking lots. Seeing dozens of Vincent Black Shadows which fetch 6 figure prices at auctions being used as daily drivers was a real eye-opener. And the island is a gorgeous place, a story in itself... I’ll be sharing my experiences and 100 of my best images during a Tuesday Seminar at Americade 2018. If you’re interested, I’d be happy to share the joy, plus a few tips if you dream of such a trip. See you then! -Bill
