Q&A with: Monster Maker By Night Fx As an artist, when did you first realize you were doing what you loved? I started off a massive fan of monster movies from a young age. That gradually led to writing and then filmmaking. It was making movies that would ultimately spawn my passion for makeup and makeup effects. Growing up in a small Kansas town in the 1990’s meant I had to improvise and teach myself how to do things. So when I would make a horror picture, I would not only have to figure out the logistics of filming, but also how to accomplish the makeup and effects. Of course, starting out I wasn’t very good, but that never stopped me. For years, my focus was only on the filmmaking aspect of the arts, but after attending the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and finishing my master’s degree as well as starting a family, I knew that committing to the rigors of movie making wasn’t going to work anymore. However being an artist meant I had to find something to feed the creative beast, so to speak. Having fiddled with effects work for years in my movie making, I finally decided that I would return to the thing that charged my creativity as a child. I found what I was looking for in Dick Smith’s basic 3D makeup course and ultimately his advanced course. How long have you been in this field? Technically I have been in the field for about 20 years, but only became totally devoted to makeup and makeup effects in the last six. Have you collaborated with anyone special, if not and you could; who would it be? One aspect that I love so much about the makeup effects community is that it’s very giving. Every professional makeup effects artist I have met, or chatted with, has always had the time to answer my questions and give me advice. One of the crowning achievements so far is having my work (actually, it was my first prosthetic work) viewed and critiqued by Academy Award winning makeup artist Kevin Haney (Driving Miss Daisy). His only critique was that my mask needed more wrinkles, advice I have since taken to heart. I would love to meet and chat with Dick Smith, Rick Baker and the guys at KNB effects group. It was their work that first made an impression on me as a child.

What is your inspiration for doing what you do? My inspiration lies in many things, but mainly it is in my love for creating, seeing something that is in my mind come to life, and seeing others react to it. My parents and grandparents have been very inspirational as well. In fact, it’s their creativity that has pushed me into the arts in the first place. Future plans? Currently I am working to create the Frankenstein Monster for the Topeka Civic Theatre production of Young Frankenstein, the musical. I also have a couple of personal projects in the works, as well as finishing my advanced makeup course. I hope to get more work in film, as well as photography work in the future. I really love the theatrics of what I do. Who would you compare your work to? I would compare my work to the early makeup effects masters, namely Jack Pierce and Dick Smith. Their work continues to captivate me. They were innovators, perfectionists, and without them, there would be no makeup effects as we know them today. Closing thoughts: The world of producing special makeup effects is quite a task and not an easy one to learn. Recent special effects makeup shows have caused many to believe that this process is simple to execute. This couldn’t be further from the truth. These shows, while helping to expose people to special makeup effects, have also skewed the art of making prosthetics by not showing major parts of the process, the hardest and most problematic. In essence, they have given viewers a false perspective of what it takes to create a final product, leading many individuals to think that learning special effects makeup is easy. While this aspect is a bit disheartening to me, I do take great delight in helping individuals understand the full process. As a beginner, it is important to ask questions when you are stumped, but realize that in order to truly grasp this process, you have to do things on your own, make mistakes and then learn from them. But, like any other art form, the key to mastering it is dedication, patience, and above all else, passion. https://www.facebook.com/MonsterMakerByNight?ref=br_tf

Berry-De-lish Av Magazines official spring drink

By Citty Kat The skies are a little bit brighter, the sun is shining a little longer and it's getting hot outside. Time to break out the sandals, sun dresses and springtime drinks. Put away the hot cocoa cause i have a treat for you. This drink is easy to make and good for everyone. Even your manly man will ask for another sip or two. I came up with this sweet little concoction by accident. I enjoy making non-alcoholic drinks but this one would be good to if you add a splash of gin or two.

What you will need to make the "Berry-De-lish" is : 1 cup Sweet ripe fresh strawberries cut in half 1 liter of Ginger Ale soda 2 cups crushed ice 1 cup of Dole Strawberry Banana juice rock sugar to put on the rim of glass. Basically, You will blend the strawberries and juice first in a blender on high. Next add your ice and slowly add your ginger ale. Blend well. Next, To garnish your glass in sugar crystals, I dipped the rim of my glass in honey so that the sugar sticks better. So you would need to lay down foil or wax paper smear a little honey one one half of the paper and pour your sugar on the other half. Dip your glass in the honey first then in your sugar. Pour your drink and garnish with a fresh strawberry. Enjoy.

As an artist, i want to be different, I am very determined to get new material out that everyone can vibe to. I am a political rapper. I rhyme about things

KC Face & Body Art by Citty Kat

The world of art is not just limited to paint and paper. Of course, when it comes to the canvas you choose..the body is our greatest work of art. Piercings, tattoos and branding can be permanent forms of body art. But, what if you want to explore your wild side on a temporary level. A full sleeve tattoo, Need your face painted for the big game, leopard print eye shadow or a snake painted down the middle of your back. That is what Quentin Fox and his team provide at KC Face and Body art. "I think face and body art is a unique way for people to express themselves. I am inspired by my clients helping them achieve their vision. Whether it is a child , adult or organization, bringing the art to life is fun for me." Says Mr. fox. " I have been painting for about 3 years. What inspired me is Demi Moore's body paint by artist Joanne Gair. To see a living canvas, that can respond to you and be painted again & again is amazing." Quentin is excited to announce future plans to expand the business into the promotional model field. "I have currently added a new artist whose background is a fine arts major so i know he will add great value to the team." Mr. Fox says what makes them stand out from similar businesses is their ability to connect with people, understanding their clients needs, also planning and quality execution are key components of their success working for both indiviuals or businesses." “Nautical Venture”

By Ashia Ackov

In the wide world of fashion, there is a new maven on the scene. I doubt you have even heard of her yet, but trust me, she is a force to be reckoned with. Her name is Hollie, A.K.A. Marriebelle Morris. She is a young woman defining the term “SciFi Fashion.” I was lucky enough to come across her photo on FaceBook and awed and amazed to find out that, not only was she gorgeous, she created the outfit she was modeling. Upon being interviewed, she had the following to say….

My style is victorian focusing on Pirate themes, with elements of "steampunk". My plan is to go to a fashion design school after I get my associates degree from JCCC. I want to design clothes & open an online store I want to provide people with futuristic minds, clothes to match. I want to create wears that embodies ideas of our future, as in the things we see in sci-fi movies. Fashion that is current with all of mankind's innovations; light up clothes, UV reactive fabric, and so on. focusing on people belonging to the cyber subculture, bringing them into the light to lead us into a new age of fashion. My inspiration for my line is the huge Steampunk movement that really hit hard this last year. Steampunk is Victorian sci-fi and I love most things sci-fi, even what sci-fi would be people to people of the Victorian era. My garments are reworked Victorian fashions. Victorian fashion is a very loose concept since there is so many ways to interpret it so i focused in more for an overall Nautical theme. Pirates were a huge thing in Victorian times and I am so in love with their wardrobe, many of my pieces are pirate themed. If not then they inspired by what pirates love most; the sea. The sea's many shades of blues and constant movement make it an overall magical and beautiful thing. I try to represent the sea well by making beautiful pieces! All of this, the sea, Victorian fashion, pirates and all things Nautical, sums up my Passion, making the hints of deep red and thrown in roses appropriate. Also, I knew I wanted to be a fashion designer since kindergarten; when I tried to make my turtle costume a serious fashion statement. I have been sewing since my freshman year of high school and haven't stopped since. I’ve apprenticed in a sewing store teaching others how to sew. I would have loved to be David Bowie's designer. I am very inspired by his wardrobe, music him in general.

Get in shape, stay in shape By Phantom

When it comes to fitness, the goal is work from the inside out. If your not giving your body what it needs to perform, you can expect less than desirable results. We spoke with a fitness trainer from Topeka about The secret to his success and this is what he had to say. "I have been a fitness expert for 4 years and have been involved in sports my entire life. An ankle injury sidelined me from playing basketball therefore, i got into working out. I work at Great life and fitness YWCA Topeka. I'm also going to school for athletic training to help others like myself "Prevent" sport related injuries. Bikini season is right around the corner for you ladies and of course you want to tone up fast. To be honest, there is no fool-proof way to flat abs. You will have to put forth the effort and hard work to accomplish the goals you are striving for. The secret toward having toned abdominals is portion control.

Cut your portions in half. I tell my clients to eat what they like because our bodies need fats, sugars, proteins and carbs. But the key is moderation because over indulgence in anything is bad for you even if it's supposedly good for us. Cut your portions in half and workout at least 3 times a week and the results will come. By the way, Grapefruit and green tea are a natural fat burner, try adding some to your routine. If you need help, my training sessions are reasonably priced and you can call anytime to set up an appointment. My goal is to help you reach yours. "
