Meet our Covergirl: “Elizabeth”

Edited by Phantom

Creating fashion on a budget “Yeah SF style! The City by the Bay. I’m that girl that turned boyfriend’s sport jersey into a dress for a sports game. Fashion Game: Fashion on a budget. Fashion fixes from thrift shop finds, etc. Fashion designers I can afford. I love how clothing can make people come together and make two complete strangers get into a deep discussion. Anything that puts food and fashion on the same plate is cool with me. What I’ve learned over the years.. You can be yourself – your authentic self –. You do not have to fit into some artificial frame to be a fabulous. Your unique likes and dislikes, your abilities and aptitudes – are FAR more interesting than any being manufactured. Authenticity gets people’s attention.” Event Planner by day Diva by night, San Francisco based Elizabeth Arias has a sincere and friendly approach of supporting local designers and uprising artist through organizing events and purchasing goods. “California style is all about that laidback and carefree attitude.” Say The Gorgeous Arias. That is why we named her our covergirl. Supporting local designers and small businesses is everything that AV Magazine is about. Even though She is all the way on the West Coast, She still supports a small business MisMatched Misfitz here in Kansas. That is what we love about her, and that is why she rocks in our book! https://www.facebook.com/elizabethaevents

Ollie Wills Photography

The woman behind the magic

Edited By Citty Kat

Have you collaborated with anyone special, if not who would you like to work with if you could? I definitely didn’t need to ask too many questions, I have worked with Makeup Artists, Michelle Cover only the right questions to get inside the soul of a and Nicki Nekro, models, Shila Pratt and Kat Kocel female mastermind in the field of photography. Her as well as other very amazing people. I would with name is Tiffany Wills, She is the owner and Mikala Ewald from Makeup by Mikala. She's operator of “Ollie Wills Photography”. I am not sure amazing and has been on my radar since I saw her how many of you have already heard of her or work. When I first saw her work, I don't feel that I seen her work, but wow, let me tell you, a friend of was good enough to even get her time. But now, I mine suggested we interview her and showed me feel that I am slowly approaching a point where my her online portfolio and it is outstanding work! Very work will be prepared to match her awesomeness. creative, out of the box, in your face and intimate. This is the interview that we have the pleasure of sharing with you. As an artist/musician when did you first realize that you were doing what you loved? When I successfully edited my first "showable" photograph. I had been taking pictures for about a year or two before I shared them with friends. I was so insecure about what I was doing and so afraid of any negative criticism that I would get. That changed when I decided to set up an etsy account and sell some of work. I sold three pictures from an "Oklahoma Series" and felt that little push of confidence that I needed to continue learning my craft. How long have you been in this field? I have been taking pictures for about 7 years. I have been a professional photographer for 3 years now doing anything from weddings, fine art, to small commercial gigs.

What is your inspiration for doing what you do? “Brooke Shaden, a professional and world renowned photographer, and Danielle Aquiline, my friend and a popular Chicago based wedding photographer. I look to book for creativity and ingenuity in the field of photography. I look to Brooke for that edge and stepping outside of myself. She challenges my ability for composition. Right now, I'm still trying to learn the craft of composition through Photoshop.” Is there anything you want people to know about you that most people closest to you don't know? “I’ve finally found something that makes me eternally happy. It brings me more joy than I have ever experienced in my love affair with art all of these years. I feel it is a gift. I've been given the gift of finding my passion and actually being very good at itnaturally. That's something that I am discovering, that most people try to encounter their entire life. But, I discovered it in my twenties. It's like that long lost boyfriend or girlfriend that you find later in life and you're kinda like "where were you all these years!"

Wedding Photography When did your business open officially? In 2011. What inspired you to open this type of service? My love of Photography Do you feel there is a need for this type of business in your city? Absolutely. Photography is needed everywhere. How does your business stand out from others like it in your city? I have a slightly creative edge. My style doesn't necessarily look completely different, but it definitely has a different feel. Can't quite put your finger on it. What type of customer are you trying to reach? Openminded individuals or anyone who wants/needs photos. What are your business hours and where are you located? I'm open at odd times because of the nature of my business and can be contacted at anytime of the day through my business phone. I'm located now in Charlotte, NC We'd like to know what are you future plans? Most of my future gigs are weddings. Although I enjoy the clients I meet through doing weddings and weddings pay the bills, I would like to do editorial shoots. I LOVE working with models. Those shoots challenge me.

Paint me Glamourous: Makeup By Nancy Edited By Phantom

“The first time I realized that I loved the

art of makeup, was during high school. I'd save my allowance to buy drugstore makeup and experiment with different looks on myself. Not only did I enjoy it, I loved it! It wasn't long before I'd volunteer my services to do makeup on my friends and family. Then, I noticed a sense of confidence that would come after their makeup transformation, which made me love what the the power of makeup can do even more.” Says Mrs. DelCarmen-Cox. When it comes to Make up She specializes in glamour. Although she is quite talented in all fields of the artistry, Print, High fashion, Runway, Simple makeovers, This time we want to focus on her skills of something every woman wants; Great Bridal Makeup! “I've been a

professional makeup artist for five years now. I've been a huge fan of indie-director Steve Balderson's work for a long time. So this past summer, I finally had the amazing opportunity to work with him in a film called Helltown, which will be released next year. I've learned so much while having fun doing makeup/hair for his film. I've always found inspiration everywhere! “ Said Nancy.

As you can see for yourself, Mrs. DelCarmen Cox Masters the artform of what i like to call “beauty enhancing.” “I've been a big fan of the Beauty Blender for the past five years, and I can't wait to try their mini version! They're these fun, colorful egg-shaped, multi-functional sponges, that has helped with seamlessly blending makeup onto skin. Love them! As far as makeup brands, I can mention a few. I'm still a big fan of Nvey Eco moisturizing fluid foundation for light to medium coverage, Tarte cosmetics for eyeshadows, Jane Iredale for her brow kits and powder foundation. I can keep going, but these are just some of my most used and favorite products that are in my kit. When asked if she had any advice for those aspiring to get into this field, she had this to say: “I think to succeed in anything, you have to be passionate about whatever it is that gets you out of bed everyday. Whether you're a teacher, a dancer, a doctor, a jewelry maker, etc., you have to find purpose in what you do. Then showing up with enthusiasm and a commitment to do your best, is half the battle. “ “My future plans are to continue to hone my skills as a makeup artist by working with talented and creative people in the business. I enjoyed teaching makeup application at Bellus Academy, so I plan to teach makeup application in another school in town. I'll also continue to do makeup for bridal, beauty and film. My immediate plan is to do makeup for a retro-inspired, editorial shoot for an online publication .” Says Nancy. The Piano Prodigy Meet Xaciano

By Phantom

“I have always loved classical music. Bach, Beethoven, Mozart or Vivaldi are some of my favorites. My mom said she use to put the music on and clean house when she was pregnant with me. I guess i sort of picked it up there.” Says 12 year old Xaciano. The 6th Grader has been playing since he was 7 and has had no formal training but can play along with the best of them. “I want to learn to actually read the sheet music so that i can compose some of my own work.” He says. “I use to watch my uncle play his keyboard and became fascinated and thought, Hey i bet i could do that.” Unlike most boys his age, instead of going out to play, he would spend most of the summer indoors practicing his skill and playing by ear. Soon he learned over 20 classical songs, Among them his favorite “ Prelude No.1 in C Major” by Bach. On top of learning new songs he is still able to maintain good grades and stay on the honor roll at school. “I know people may consider me a nerd, i just think i am a young man in an old man’s body. How old..who knows? Maybe early Renaissance.” Smiles Xaciano “One day i will play a concert so grand all those who came before me will roll over in their graves to congratulate me .” We definitely wish Him luck and are proud to recognize any positive young people. Way to go young man. Bravo!

Reviewing the Cookie Queen: Big Sweetie Confections

Story By Ashia Ackov

Alright! Let’s be frank here. We all have a vice. Mine happens to be a sweet tooth. So when i came across these not only beautiful but delicious treats at a bridal show a couple of months back, I fell in lust. They are phenomenal!! I am real big on flavor, texture, and visual. So to grade the cookies that i had on those factors, um, yes, they were amazing. First of all. She specializes in so much more than just cookies. Cakes, Pies, Brownies. Although i do prefer sugar cookies. They remind me of Christmas morning. My sugar cookie was intended to be taken home for my son, I debated with myself for a couple of hours before i actually unwrapped it. It was pleasantly designed, and purple my favorite color so i used that as an excuse to open and examine it closer. The smell hit my nose, like fresh baked, so i had to taste it. So glad i did. I ate one, two, three...Did i feel guilty? No, i eventually got one home safely to my boys and they enjoyed them as well.

Adair Hair Care

Story By Citty Kat

Good Hot oil treatments for type 4 hair By Felicia Adair AfricanAmerican hair differs from other hair in many ways. The most prominent differences are that black hair is thicker, it's made up of more cuticle layers and it's much curlier. It is also more prone to dryness and breakage. Because of this, special treatments such as hot oil can help you care for your black hair. Coconut Oil Coconut oil stands out in the world of black hair care because it is one of the few oils that penetrate the hair instead of just coating the hair strand. The Research Department of Marico Industries in India found that coconut oil benefits hair, and damaged hair in particular, by preventing protein loss. Black hair is particularly vulnerable to protein loss because the methods of styling commonly used on black hair are very harsh on hair for example, the use of chemical relaxers. Applying coconut oil allows the structure of the hair to be maintained, while hair becomes less prone to breakage. That is where my product comes in. It’s called “Coco le Ro” To do a good oil treatment on the hair, place a jar of the oil of your choice inside a bowl of hot water to warm up the oil. Do not allow the oil to get too hot or you could burn your scalp. Part the hair in sections about 1 inch thick and apply the oil liberally to the scalp and hair. Use an applicator bottle if necessary. Cover the hair with a plastic cap and sit under the dryer for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse your hair, and then wash it and style as usual. Apply a dimesized amount of oil to the hair once styled. This product Coco Le Ro doubles as a scalp growth treatment massaged into scalp. There are two other essential products in my line, Thicken up oil & Shea Butter creme. Both work hand in hand to help you maintain extraordinary lengths.
