Sasol Young Explorer – Mammals is a beautiful, exciting and multilingual app that introduces young kids (3–8 years old) to the majestic wild creatures of southern Africa. The app seamlessly blends

storytelling and game playing in a fun and educational way, which will keep kids engaged for hours at a time as they develop their reading and learning skills.

Young Explorer is beautifully illustrated throughout, with each animal presented separately and

Challenging, age-appropriate games are thrown into the mix, adding extra fun and pleasure to the

learning experience.

There are four languages in the app – English, isiXhosa, isiZulu and Afrikaans. Kids can read

Sasol Young Explorer – Frogs is the second app in the new Young Explorer nature series for kids. Colourful, informative and stimulating, Frogs introduces young children (3–8 years old) to 55 of the most common and rare frog species found in southern Africa. The descriptions of the animals – in English, isiXhosa, isiZulu and Afrikaans – are written in easy and accessible language and narrated by professional voice-over artists. There are also calls for all the frogs, except one – the only voiceless species in the region – while videos for 29 species show these delightful creatures in their natural habitat. ‘Quick facts’ about the size, egg type, location and conservation status of each species are revealed by toggling between illustrations of the different features on the screen. The app includes a play section with four games: puzzles, memory card games, an animal naming game and a nature cleanup game. There are lots of opportunities to tap, toggle, touch and swipe, listen, watch, and learn. Perfect for pre-readers and young learners, the app will keep kids engaged and help them learn about the fascinating creatures that we share our world with.

Safety Keep safety in mind when Planning your trip - Samuel Chowles

Safety is of major concern to us when planning an adventure trip. Making sure that the activity is done safely is one of the aspects that will make people want to make use of your services again in the future. It is something that is not perhaps first looked at but there is very little room for error in this regard. A company can easily get a bad reputation if an incident occurs on one of its trips. While, if an incident does occur and it is handled really well, a company can build a good reputation. Ensuring that the activity is safe will allow people to focus on the objective to learn and have fun. It is also important to note that there is a legal requirement to ensure safety as far as possible. This legal aspect begins with understanding that you have a duty of care towards the customers that are partaking in the activity. Duty of care is defined as a legal obligation which is imposed on an individual requiring adherence to a standard of reasonable care while performing any acts that could cause foreseeable harm to others. An example of a duty is when someone is cleaning a floor. When water is on the floor is becomes slippery. It is the duty of the person cleaning to display a sign, indicating that the floor is wet and slippery so that others are aware of it. If a paddling guide does not tell customers of an upcoming rapid in the river then he has breached his duty. If one breaches a duty of care then it may lead to negligence. It is beyond the scope of these articles to fully explain this concept and I would encourage you

to do further research on the topic if you are unfamiliar with it. Knowing that we have a duty of care to customers means that we must take measures to be aware of hazards and take steps to deal with or circumvent them. In the example of cleaning a floor. The hazard that the floor is slippery and someone can fall and hurt themselves exists. Therefore a warning sign is used to prevent this from happening. In an adventure setting when abseiling, the danger of a rock fall exists. Therefore helmets are worn to mitigate this risk. It is clear that it is important that we are able to identify the hazards in any particular setting. Once identified we are able to plan around the risks and thereby reduce the potential for incidents from occurring. To better accommodate for this type of circumstance we need to understand what a hazard and an incident is. Hazards are a source of danger. Danger is anything which may cause injury or damage to persons or property. Incidents are anything that requires some sort of remedial action and could be serious or not. An emergency is an incident which is time critical, that is the longer it takes to deal with the worse the situation will get. In order to prevent incidents as best we can we must identify what the potential for an incident is. Knowing the hazards allows us to better understand the potential for an accident.

There are two main categories of hazards, this is environmental hazards and human factor hazards. Here are some examples:

Environmental factors

When assessing the potential environmental hazards you need to look at three factors: 1) activity Static activities in which the environment is relatively unchanging (e.g. hiking) Dynamic activities in which the environment change changes very quickly in unpredictable ways (e.g. abseiling, rock climbing, biking) 2) location I n remote locations you need to exercise additional precautions. One common method of accomplishing this is to increase the danger rating by one level. For example in the mountains the chance of injury while walking is higher than in a town park. 3) season/climate Weather and the possibility of weather changes also have a significant impact on Accident Potential.

Human factor hazards

When assessing the potential human hazards you need to look at these factors: 1) participants No awareness of hazards No skills to avoid hazards Resistance to instructions Irresponsible Careless attitude towards self, others, equipment Need to "prove" self, macho attitude Poor physical strength, stamina, fear, anxiety

2) equipment Worn rope Boots not broken in Improper clothing Inoperative equipment 3) guides Lack of knowledge of environmental hazards Inadequate skills to extricate group and self from hazards Poor safety judgement Poor teachers of necessary skills Instructions unclear Poor supervisor, does not correct problems Tiredness 4) group Group not yet formed, lacks cooperative structure Interpersonal frictions unresolved Poor communication patterns excessive competition Lack of concern for slow or different individuals Excessive pressure or stress to "perform" macho No practice in working harmoniously under stress In the next article we will explore what are some of the measures that one can employ to deal with these potential hazards

Life Changing activities - Adventure Therapy

What is adventure therapy? Here I’d like to quote Wikipedia:

Adventure therapy approaches psychological treatment through experience and action. When we think “psychological treatment” the general population will think: “somebody is nuts, somebody receiving “treatment” is in some or other form incapable” Right? Oh so wrong….

Although I knew the process, and that it works, I could never figure out exactly why it could change lives in such a short period of time. The better I planned it according to a few

That is why all fears seem illogic; it is because they most often are! For that person, they are real. They are rooted in the subconscious part of the brain, backed 99.9% of the time with a real experience (not just movie) and powered by an intense emotion experienced at the time. The experience itself might not be the truth, but a child or person might experience

it as “truth”. Like seeing something in the dark (be it a cat, dog or whatever that was there at the time of the experience), but if a child’s mind has told him that those noises he heard was a monster staring at him in the dark, to him it is “a monster in the dark”. Never underestimate the power of the subconscious mind ruling your present day actions and decisions! This lie or experience of “there is someone in the dark” might always override any conscious logical truth and later in life can become a phobia if the experience was a traumatic fear. (And no matter how many verses of scripture or words of logic reality we pump in a person, only another experience and certain alternative counselling will most probably replace that fear).

iSimangaliso’s uMkhuze – a wildlife bonanza The uMkhuze section of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park World Heritage Site is 107 years old, during which time it has been through repeated cycles of drought and plenty. One of the bleakest periods for this 38 500ha section was during the devastating drought that peaked in 2015 – and yet a visit today will reveal the truly remarkable miracle of nature enabling it to bounce back. Lush with grass tall enough to hide anything shorter than a kudu, brimming with full pans and a flowing uMkhuze River, and populated by the young offspring of a myriad species, uMkhuze is right on top of its ecological game. For those as yet unaware of the special attributes of this jewel of iSimangaliso, we share a sample of the wildlife conservation activities and research taking place here – and why this is the best time to visit:

Lions Top of most visitors’ wish lists is the king of the jungle, and since 2013 uMkhuze has been home to some fine specimens. Last month, two young males were brought in from the Limpopo province to join the population and strengthen the genetics, and today the lads will be released from the bomas into the freedom of the Park at large. Hopefully they won’t clash too heavily with the resident pair of Kalahari boys, who continue to thrill visitors like Andre Vorster, who photographed them recently (above right).

Wild dogs uMkhuze is one of several reserves hosting members of the critically endangered South African wild dog metapopulation. The distinction ‘metapopulation’ (rather than a local population) is made as wild dogs are known to travel great distances inside and out of fenced reserves, and are considered as a whole. Additionally, they are carefully managed by scientists to introduce new genetic lines when interbreeding and other factors may come into play. For this reason, uMkhuze regularly introduces or exchanges individuals between other host properties.

Hyaena Another animal that transits fenced boundaries successfully is the hyaena – and surprisingly little is known about these evocative beasts. Exciting research is underway to expand our information and assist in managing these animals, and an ongoing project undertaken by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife has resulted in at least 56 identified individuals in uMkhuze to date. Another project focusing on carnivores is in process with the use of 250 camera traps spread evenly throughout the reserve, which should provide the most comprehensive data yet on the distribution and density of these species.

Elephants The uMkhuze section currently has approximately 106 elephants following a donation of thirty individuals to the Zinave National Park in Mozambique last year. At the upper reaches of a sound number for the reserve’s ecological capacity (taking into consideration drought cycles), 75% of the adult females received a repeat contraceptive vaccine this month. Importantly there will still be a few individuals that can conceive, including the matriarch – so one may still see young calves in the mix.

Tortoises uMkhuze is well known for its large tortoise population, with two species occurring here – Leopard (photographed above by Brigitte Church) and Eastern hinged. It is almost impossible to visit without seeing one or several, especially in the dry season after rain which brings them onto the tar roads to sip at water puddles. They are such important residents that they even have their own traffic sign! This year, conservation staff are reporting a higher than usual number of hatchlings, many as tiny as a matchbox – which means visitors need to be especially vigilant to avoid squashing them on the roads. A leopard tortoise may lay as many as 70 eggs per year. Tortoise eggs are known to be able to remain unhatched for a long period until conditions are favourable. The prevalence of tortoise hatchlings would therefore seem to be a very positive sign.

Rare sightings

uMkhuze is one reserve that can offer the unusual, be it a rare bird (of the 420 species recorded here), or an even more rare animal. Recent camera trap captures showed a striped polecat, and lucky visitors have seen and photographed aardvark. Recently, three separate conservation staff caught a fleeting glimpse of what they suspect was a dwarf mongoose. As yet unverified, if this proves to be true then it will be extremely exciting as the species has been recorded as locally extinct! So when next you do a game drive, if you are fortunate to spot any of our rare or endangered species, please grab a photo and let us know. You never know – your contribution may be the missing piece of the puzzle!

For more information on the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, visit our website at www.isimangaliso.com. Media enquiries should be directed to Debbie Cooper at debbie@isimangaliso.com.

The Ultimate Retreat Planning Checklist An easily to follow checklist with items not to forget when planning a Christian retreat. Retreats are great resources for any church group or ministry organization. They can be used to provide training and education, to cultivate and strengthen relationships, and to give an outlet for recreation and fellowship. As valuable as a retreat can be, it requires a lot of advanced planning and preparation. The following checklist has been compiled in order to make retreat planning easier by providing a comprehensive checklist of things to consider, organize and do. It is advisable to have a retreat planning team in place before getting started. Checklist planning sections can be divided among individuals or groups with set tasks assigned to each group. BUDGET PLANNING

INITIAL PLANNING o Determine your audience. For whom is this retreat planned: men, women, couples, singles, youth? o Create a theme. Having a central idea makes organizing speakers and activities easier. o Schedule coordinating activities. Choose activities that fit the theme and meets the needs of attendees. o Set a date for the event.

o Create a budget to include costs of promotion, venue, activities, food, supplies, etc. o Secure a venue. Decide how much service you need for your group. A full service venue is recommended, but a selfservice venue may be more fitting for your budget. It is also important to find out how many attendees a venue can accommodate. o Determine cost for attendees. How much will you need to charge in order to cover costs?

Christian Camp Pro – www.christiancamppro.com

FINAL PLANNING

ACTIVITY PLANNING o Contact speakers/guest presenters. Find out if they are available on your set dates and how much they charge. o Determine a schedule of events. Decide on times for meetings, seminars, organized activities and meals. Be sure to leave room for unstructured personal time. o If you are using a self-service facility, plan a daily menu with available options. PROMOTIONAL PLANNING o Send out mail and/or email informational brochures or newsletters. o Create a social media event page on Facebook or Twitter for promotion, updates and reminders. Social media is often the fastest way to communicate to an audience. o Set deadlines for sign-ups and/or deposits. It is easier to coordinate if you can get a solid count of attendees early on in planning.

o Check in with the venue to ensure the location and staff are ready for your event. o Check in with speaker/guest presenter to ensure he or she is still on board and prepared. It is advisable to have a back-up speaker available should there be any last minute changes. Emergencies happen, so it is always better to be prepared. o Meet with your volunteers and planning team to go over schedules and checklists. This ensures that everyone is on the same page and has all the needed supplies and equipment. SUMMARY Planning a retreat doesn’t have to be a source of stress. Having an enthusiastic and competent planning team helping you to bear the load will go a long way toward a successful retreat. Plan as far ahead as possible and don’t be afraid to delegate. A balanced and well-coordinated event will be the most enjoyable for your guests and for you.

Take our youth Back to the theatre

SYNOPSIS OF SCHOOL PRODUCTIONS - Ester Nasser (TDT) / Theo Buccolli (Co-Directors School’s Programme)

Peter and the Wolf This production introduces children to the various instruments in an orchestra and the brightly localised characters that represent the different instruments, making it both a learning and highly entertaining programme. Both before and after the performance the children get in interact with the characters about their roles and what impact music, instruments and various situations in life have on our lives in general.

The Environmental Programme This production takes the children on a journey of discovery and questions the way we treat our environment. Why is the Rhino endangered? What do oil-slicks do to the sea and the seals etc. that live in that environment? What is the impact of cutting down our forests and the wild life that considers it their natural habitat? So meet the wonderful characters who will journey with The children to discover what we can do to help now and in the future.

Lecture/Demonstration This production is a rocking lecture/demonstration to help inform students what it takes to be a performer. What styles are used in the big musicals, and what training does one need to meet the demands of being a performer in today’s theatre world.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream This Beautiful funky production of Shakespeare’s tale is set to delight, entrance and entertain students who are studying any Shakespeare set work. It will involve the audience and the performers. After the performance there will be a guided dialogue between performers and students arguing and discussing issues of the work. Situated within the beautiful 1,000 hectare Umhloti Nature Reserve, 15 kilometres outside Nelspruit, the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) South Africa Chimpanzee Sanctuary is home to chimps that have been misplaced from their natural habitats in Africa. Chimp Eden was established in 2006 and is home to 33 chimpanzees. This JGI chimpanzee sanctuary brings the world of chimpanzees closer to humanity through education end eco-tourism. The goal of the chimpanzee sanctuary is to rescue chimpanzees that have survived the bush meat trade, been orphaned, traded in the illegal pet market, or rescued from being traumatised for entertainment in circuses, beach resorts and night clubs.

Thomas

Bazia

Charlie The chimpanzees at Chimp Eden are the lucky ones, living out their lives in a risk free environment and being provided with the necessary attention to recover from the trauma they have experienced. The chimpanzees spend their days in semi-wild enclosures, and show normal social interaction and behavioural patterns as group members. The South African chimpanzee sanctuary is proud to be part of the Jane Good Institute, which is a global leader in the effort to conserve and preserve endangered species and habitats, and in particular chimpanzees.

On your guided tour, each chimpanzee is introduced and their often sad stories are told in an effort to create awareness and educate the guests on the struggles wild chimpanzees face and what we all can do to help save an protect these beautiful creatures for our future generations.

Martha The sanctuary is open to the public 7 days a week. Two chimpanzee families are visited on the 3 daily tours (10:00am, 12:00pm &14:00pm)

Cozy

The sanctuary is a non-profit organization and rely greatly on donations from the public and the guests that visit the sanctuary and support us by doing a tour, becoming a chimpanzee guardian or simply buying a unique gift in our curio shop.
