VISITTHEVREDEFORTDOME

Vredefort Dome

Vredefort Dome, approximately 120 km southwest of Johannesburg, is a representative part of a larger meteorite impact structure, or astrobleme Dating back 2,023 million years, it is the oldest astrobleme yet found on Earth. With a radius of 190 km, it is also the largest and the most deeply eroded. Vredefort Dome bears witness to the world’s greatest known single energy release event, which had devastating global effects including, according to some scientists, major evolutionary changes. It provides critical evidence of the Earth’s geological history and is crucial to the understanding of the evolution of the planet. Despite the importance of impact sites to the planet’s history, geological activity on the Earth’s surface has led to the disappearance of evidence from most of them, and Vredefort is the only example to provide a full geological profile of an astrobleme below the crater floor

Outstanding Universal Value

The property represents a unique geological phenomenon formed about 2 023 million years ago and is the oldest and largest known meteorite impact structure on earth. Within the area, geological strata comprising the middle to upper zones of the earth’s crust, developed over a period of more than 3 200 million years are exposed. All the classical related characteristics of a large astrobleme are found in the property This multi ring structure formed by the impact scar illustrates the effect of shock metamorphism of rocks, transformation of crystal structures and shatter cones of the immense force created by the impact.

Vredefort Dome is the oldest, largest, and most deeply eroded complex meteorite impact structure in the world It is the site of the world’s greatest single, known energy release event. It contains high quality and accessible geological (outcrop) sites which demonstrate a range of geological evidences of a complex meteorite impact structure. The rural and natural landscapes of the serial property help portray the magnitude of the ring structures resulting from the impact.

The serial nomination is considered to be a representative sample of a complex meteorite impact structure A comprehensive comparative analysis with other complex meteorite impact structures demonstrated that it is the only example on earth providing a full geological profile of an astrobleme below the crater floor, thereby enabling research into the genesis and development of an astrobleme immediately post impact

The serial World Heritage property which is about 30,111 ha, is made up of a main component area of 30,108 ha and 3 satellite components of 1 ha each The property of the Vredefort Dome includes key geological (outcrop) sites which demonstrate classic complex meteorite impact structure phenomena A comprehensive comparative analysis with other complex meteorite impact structures demonstrated that it is the only example on earth providing a full geological profile of an astrobleme below the crater floor, thereby enabling research into the genesis and development of an astrobleme immediately post impact This serial property is surrounded by a 5 km buffer zone that is designed to ensure the property’s long term protection against external development threats.

SAN ROCK ART IN THE FREE STATE

Some of South Africa’s most valued San (Bushman) rock art is found in the Free State

Caledon River Nature Reserve

A superbly preserved site with Bushman rock paintings of eland, cattle, hippo, a huge snake, eland and human figures is located in the reserve The two panels of the site represent ‘traditional’ and ‘contact’ motifs’ that show how the Bushmen coped with change in the Caledon River Valley.

Hoekfontein

Hoekfontein is located between Clocolan and Ficksburg. There are 3 Bushman rock painting sites at Hoekfontein. Notable is a panel of 14 human figures dancing. 6 of these figures are infibulated an artistic convention where a bar was drawn across the penis to show the link between hunter and prey The site also has two very rare ‘Palettes’ that Bushman used to rub to gain supernatural potency. There are also 7 steenbok and an eland depicted. Near the paintings is a Late Iron Age refuge site consisting of 14 stone walled enclosures that date to Mfecane times between 1790 AD 1840 AD

Kiara

A small rock shelter with 47 Bushman rock paintings including eland, rhebuck, and human figures is located at Kiara (between Clarens and Golden Gate National Park) This site is truly unique in that it has South Africa’s only unequivocal example of a dassie or rock hyrax (Procaviacapensis).

Modderpoort

Bushman rock paintings of birds, a cattle raid, eland and human figures can be found at Modderpoor, located between Ladybrand and Clocolan.

Moolmanshoek

Moolmanshoek is near Rosendal in the Eastern Free State It is home to a large painted cave with an unusual 3 m deep tunnel at the northern end and a spectacular view. There are 47 Bushman rock paintings. These include 2 felines, eland, a shaman transforming into her/his source of animal potency, 7 women with weighted digging sticks and some enigmatic parallel red lines

National Museum, Bloemfontein

Facilities include displays, a shop and a large rock art display within the museum, on Charles Street and at Oliewenhuis Art Museum See the Bushman diorama, hallucinatory rain animals and coverage of the Archaeology of South Africa’s central interior The Rock Art Department also maintains a display series in its offices in Elizabeth Street.

Free Visits to under-resourced schools around Cape Town

Cape Town is a city surrounded by beautiful biodiversity, abundant oceans, and readily accessible nature. But, it is also a growing city that faces the challenges of fulfilling the human needs of energy provision, clean drinking water, and waste disposal. Bringing these human and natural worlds together in a sustainable way takes what we call "Smart Living" - and in partnership with DHL we're bringing free sustainability outreach lessons to schools throughout that area.

Smart Living is a mobile lesson, presented by outreach teacher Anzio Abels, designed for Grade 6 and Grade 7 learners. All lessons are CAPS-curriculum aligned, with a selection of themes: Biodiversity, energy, water, and waste. Teacher Anzio uses interactive, tech-savvy lessons to engage learners and communicate even the most complex concepts in fun, informative ways!

To book, simply complete the online booking form on our Foundation's website here, or email schools@aquariumfoundation.org.z

The Two Oceans Aquarium Education Foundation's outreach programmes are offered for free to under-resourced schools around Cape Town, thanks to our generous partners like DHL, and for a small fee to schools that have the capacity. Chat to your child's teachers about this opportunity!

Our teachers are able to accommodate classes of up to 40 learners, for a maximum of 200 children a day (but we are happy to make multiple visits to the same school if you have a particularly big group).

#7 EMPLOYEES 4

As mentioned in my previous article, employers have resorted to all kinds of measures to monitor WFH performance arising, at least initially, from concerns about productivity No doubt, not all the measures and in most cases it is unlikely that any of it is covered contractually but it included e.g. biometric clock in systems, internet & telephone use, login times, taking screenshots of employees’ desktops throughout the day.

Given that research has shown that 54% of those surveyed wish to carry on working from home (Boston Consulting) regardless of the status of Covid, the time has come to revisit employment contracts on a more permanent basis Such review should by definition have RICA (The Regulation of Interception of Communications and Provisions of Communication-related Information Act, Act 70 of 2002) as its point of departure but looking ahead, should undoubtedly have to encompass aspects of POPI discussed above. Much has been said about the positive and negative aspects of WFH so let’s have a quick look at that:

NEGATIVES

All humans are by and large social creatures some more than others and this is evident in the office environment Some of us upon arrival at the office knuckle down to work right away whereas others love a (quick) chat, be it in the elevator or at the coffee machine. This is of course seriously lacking with WFH and for some people that has had quite an impact on their mental health and consequently motivation (to work) Add the deluge of Zoom & Team meetings and Whats App phone calls, the WFH circumstances have become a serious challenge and given the duty of care employers owe employees, the issues to be addressed are not merely the legal aspects such as RICA and POPI but also other issues that Covid has brought to bear namely the physical and mental well being of the employee

POSITIVES

Despite the fact that working in ‘isolation’ requires self imposed discipline there have been indications that in some cases productivity has improved. It is a matter of conditioning and a bit like the early days of open plan offices and so called ‘white noise’, employees have managed/found ways to deal with ‘domestic interruptions’.

Most have welcomed the lack of time wasting commuting and more (quality) family time. There have even been reports of less sick days!

(Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP Global, United Kingdom

Why is the question; why should any business have to ‘jump through all these hoops’? Simply because there are serious penalties for statutory non compliance!

More about the penalties in the next issue
