August 2016

This month I have to share a speech from the famous Les Brown, as this is the most valuable an inspiring words I have experienced and I would like to pass this on to you and tell you all to BE THE BEST for yourself! “If you want something out of life. If you want ot change yourself. If you you want to acquire something. If there is some goal to reach. Change your behaviour. Changing your behaviour, overcoming negative habits ... It’s challenging. It’s hard. Most people go through live never discovering their talents. Most people never develop their talents. When you step into your fears and continue to push yourself to go on, something happens for you. If you don’t develop the courage to do that what has been given to you to do and you spend a lot of time to convince other people trying to get their approval, what will happen, is you will loose your nerve and other people will convince you that what you are doing doesn’t have any value and you will give up on your dreams. How much time do you have left? HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU HAVE LEFT? (repeat). Most of us don’t use the stuff we brought into this universe. Stop wasting valuable time. If you want something you have got to be ruthless. If you want something you have got to be relentless. You have to learn how to become resourceful, you have got to learn how to become creative. The power to hold on to your dreams in spite of everything, the power to endure, this is a matter of reality. The hunger, the ability to face the fear again and again. This is a winner’s quality. What this power is I don’t know. All I know it exist and it becomes available only when a man or a woman is in that state of mind when he or she knows exactly what her or she wants and is finally determined not to quit until they find it. There is greatness in you. You have to learn how to tune out the critics outside and the critics inside. I’m gonna harness my will. I’m not gonna let anything stop me. I deserve this. Most people give up on themselves easily. You know that the human spirit is powerful. There is nothing as powerful. It is hard to kill the human spirit. You are unstoppable. Live your life with passion. With some pride. Most of us goes through live without brainstorm. Holding back, decide that you want to push yourself. You have got to focus on you. As you convince yourself... As you tell yourself everyday, everyday will your will begin to see a difference in the things you are doing. Selling yourself and your ability to do a job, to achieve a certain objective. Telling yourself everyday ... HERE I GO AGAIN and I have got what it takes. THIS IS MY DAY and NOTHING OUT THERE IS GOING TO STOP ME! “ - Les Brown.... View the most inspiring video on our facebook page at facebook/allesmagazine.. Sasol Young Explorer – Frogs is the second app in the new Young Explorer nature series for kids. Colourful, informative and stimulating, Frogs introduces young children (3–8 years old) to 55 of the most common and rare frog species found in southern Africa. The descriptions of the animals – in English, isiXhosa, isiZulu and Afrikaans – are written in easy and accessible language and narrated by professional voice-over artists. There are also calls for all the frogs, except one – the only voiceless species in the region – while videos for 29 species show these delightful creatures in their natural habitat. ‘Quick facts’ about the size, egg type, location and conservation status of each species are revealed by toggling between illustrations of the different features on the screen. The app includes a play section with four games: puzzles, memory card games, an animal naming game and a nature cleanup game. There are lots of opportunities to tap, toggle, touch and swipe, listen, watch, and learn. Perfect for pre-readers and young learners, the app will keep kids engaged and help them learn about the fascinating creatures that we share our world with.

“Life is either a great adventure or nothing at all.” Helen Keller Spirit of Adventure runs specially crafted courses which continually challenge mental, physical, emotional and spiritual abilities of each person with the aim of developing Personal and Inter-Personal skills among individuals and groups. The Spirit of Adventure Magaliesberg is located next to the Olifantsnek dam looking onto the picturesque Retief’s Kloof. There is accommodation for up to 144 students in 12 sleeper cabins and 12 staff members in comfortable wooden cabins. Spirit of Adventure’s point of difference lies in its widely recognized adeptness at tailoring courses highly pertinent to the needs of each group based on the unusual and challenging nature of activities, and the relevance of the theoretical material used. Changing cycles of the Spirit of Adventure theory-activity-review discipline are used in various combinations to produce the desired results. Spirit of Adventure was founded in 1994 with the purpose of: • Developing the potential of young people • Conveying up to date effective leadership theory • Personal development • Team building through outdoor adventure Students are led in small teams by trained Instructors participating in our Leadership year programme. They are sensitive, enthusiastic, positive young people who work hard to ensure that each pupil is fully involved and fully supported as they face the challenges of the course. Our focus for every one of our course participants is to establish overall achievement and skills in leadership, personal development (self-esteem, self-confidence and in positive self-image) and team efectiveness, aiming to build co-operative relationships with other people.

“One of the reasons we use The Spirit of Adventure is your reputation for leadership training. Another is to expose our boys to different training styles and to bond and unite them as a team.” Dave Knowles, Head, St Stithians Boys’ College

“The course content was superb. All of our school objectives were met on camp. The course was the right length and the activities suitably varied and challenging.” St Andrew School for girls

SOA LEADERSHIP YEAR The Spirit of Adventure Leadership year differs from most others in that it is a working year. It consists of three main parts, namely working as an instructor, participating in adventurous excursions and committing to a study program for the year. Instructing We need young people just out of school to work as instructors with the school groups who attend the camp. The instructors are responsible for leading groups of about 10-12 people through adventurous activities and facilitating their learning and development throughout. We train the instructors in all aspects of the work so that they are competent and confident to maintain the extremely high standard of safety and quality we expect. They are then responsible for carrying out their duties and if done correctly, they have real daily opportunities to make a lasting difference in each individual’s life. Probably the best reason for taking our specific gap year would be the personal and skills development which occurs through the work and contact with persons of a variety of ages. This development will be invaluable throughout a person’s life. Instructors sign an employment contract, as required by law and are paid per day for working with groups. Accommodation and food is provided when working and studying.

Excursions We facilitate a number of adventure trips each year and we encourage each instructor to attend as many as their finances will allow. Currently these include paragliding, advanced rock climbing, scuba diving, Big 5 hiking and camping trips. These are perhaps a luxury but we have selected experiences and refined them over the years so that they will be meaningful and not just a “temporary high”. Most people will never get another chance to do a lot of what we offer and we are also able to offer slightly better prices because of group size and regular bookings etc.

Study We expect each instructor to engage in some sort of study program each year. It is there for a number of very good reasons such as making better/more informed decisions about a full study path, gaining more insight into career choices, ruling out potential career choices etc etc. There is a vast selection of distance learning institutions, courses and subjects out there to choose from. Sometimes just the quiet and distance from the home and city allows minds to think a little more clearly and see a bigger picture. The development of each of the instructors is of as much importance as the development of the school learners and we do our best to help and encourage each instructor to grow and make sound decisions from the year.

Learning has never been this much fun! Some 90 minutes from Johannesburg and an hour’s drive from Pretoria, just outside Bela-Bela, lies the inviting ATKV Klein-Kariba resort in one of the Waterberg’s most beautiful ravines. This top-class resort offers a wide range of accommodation options with true Bushveld hospitality. At the adventure centre, even larger school, student or church groups can make use of Klein-Kariba’s facilities at a discounted rate.

With various activities, recreational facilities and amenities such as a restaurant, fast-food division and a well-stocked shop, there is no such thing as boredom at ATKV Klein-Kariba. To top it all, we are located along the Bushveld tourist route, which serves as the ideal base for day tours to explore nearby tourist attractions. The educational programmes at Klein-Kariba is designed to effectively focus on learner development in a fun and safe environment. We have fixed courses which includes a leadership development course, a bonding course, an adventure course, an ecoadventure course, as well as a nature course. We can also conduct activities or programmes that are required by school groups, by designing an educational programme that suites the specific needs of the school or group.

The Klein-Kariba Leadership Centre is the ATKV's top destination for educational courses and can house up to 200 learners in a variety of accommodation units depending on availability. The resort boasts with everything from apartments to large and comfortable houses spread throughout the mountains surrounding the resort. Klein-Kariba also have wooden chalets surrounding the dam on the resort, fully furnished 'tent houses' and the 'Tekkie Camp' which consists of nine furnished tent houses that accommodates 12 people each, for affordable group accommodation.

Klein-Kariba's Adventure programme has become a favourite among school groups, and includes numerous group activities and games like box car racing, abseiling, archery, hiking trails, raft building, paint ball and air rifle shooting, swimming, obstacle courses, night marches, a kayak challenge, map reading and many more.

The Nature programme is all about the identification of animal and insect species, animal track identification, and plant identification. The programme also provides social entertainment in the form of nature-related challenges that learners have to complete.

The Leadership programme helps identify potential leaders through a series of challenges, team games and organised entertainment activities. The programme is designed in such a way that it stimulates leadership qualities in pupils.

The Bonding programme helps pupils get to know and bond with each other by encouraging interactive participation in a range of different activities.

Investment in the youth has always been a top priority for the ATKV, that is why we3 are so active in this regard. Klein-Kariba already has over 40 returning schools every year and this number keeps growing. The ATKV offers a post-matric gap year programme that offers school leavers the opportunity to acquire new life skills while they decide on a career. We also regularly sponsor youth conferences, leadership development programmes, and educational symposia where you get the opportunity to contribute to the future of our children and the generation after them.

We take pleasure in this opportunity to introduce to you our Em’seni Conference Centre and camp. “Em’seni” means “Place of Grace” and we believe that this is experienced by all who visit Em'seni. With its incredible natural beauty, Em'seni is a place where people will discover spiritual, emotional and psychological healing and wholeness.

WHERE WE ARE SITUATED

•2.5 hours from Durban Situated on the banks of the Tugela River below Spioenkop Dam and nestling in the •3.5 hours from Gauteng valley between Winterton & Ladysmith. The origins of Em’seni came from the need •16 km from Winterton to create a home base for Scripture Union Independent Schools camping and the site •30 km from Ladysmith operates as their home base. However, we were aware that many others will be able to make use of these wonderful facilities as well, and so Em'seni operates as a facility in its own name. WHY USE EM'SENI? After 11 years of existence, Em’seni has been used for School field trips, Adventure camps, Church groups, Confirmation camps, Leadership & Prefect courses, Scripture Union Winter & Summer camps, and YWAM events. We are the base for the Berg and Bush Mountain Bike race, Oxpecker Trail Run and many specialized courses.

FACILITIES Em'seni offers about 130 beds, in combinations of up to 8 in a room. Quality ablutions adjoin the bedrooms. A large dining room and separate conference hall with smaller alcoves and meeting rooms allows for ample meeting space for 150 people. A modern industrial kitchen is fully equipped and food standards are high. Em'seni does not allow groups to self-cater, but instead its competent staff satisfy the physical needs while programme leaders can focus on intellectual, spiritual and other needs. Staff and other adults are accommodated in quality chalets.

Flexible program facilitation Good conferencing spaces Team Building activities Leadership activities Low Ropes Course Raft Building experiences Hikes and Orienteering Boer War History Sports Fields

RUN YOUR OWN PROGRAM OR PARTNERSHIP WITH OUR COMPETENT STAFF Em'seni is very flexible in how you make use of our facility. You are welcome to book it and run your own programme. Alternatively, we will work with you to make a personalised programme to meet your specific needs. We do have installed sound and data projection facilities and white boards are available. ON SITE AND SURROUNDING AREAS

On site there is a swimming pool and spectacular Tugela River frontage, which offer many water opportunities including a “bum slide” and kayaking. A large field, and volleyball courts allows for any number of games and other fun activities. Lovely river walks and access to the Spioenkop Game reserve and dam nearby increase options for activities. Em'seni is a birders paradise. The historical Spioenkop Mountain towers nearby and offers a glimpse into the Anglo-Boer war. Many schools use us as a base for touring the KZN Battlefields, with qualified guides available.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT – the EM’SENI CENTRE FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT Our passion is for youth development and Rev. Kevin Robertson heads up our Centre for Youth Development. After 25 years in high schools including 19 years as Chaplain at Hilton College, Kevin is an ideal person to assist your school leadership programme. Em'seni is not a simple “adventure centre” but seeks to use both outdoor activities and indoor workshops to explore many facets of “becoming the leader you are” Kevin does not just offer a standardised programme but works closely with schools to meet their specific needs. Regular schools include Hilton College, Michaelhouse, The Wykeham Collegiate, St Johns College, Ladysmith High, St Nicholas and St Charles College. Em’seni Centre for Youth Development is continually developing a diverse range of modules that involve theoretical and experiential components. These can be adapted to the needs of its clients as a programme is designed. There are two main types of module best described as:  Challenge and Adventure Activities: These provide the opportunity for participants to push past their comfort zones (physically, emotionally, intellectually and spiritually) and to enter a region of unknown outcome, which some refer to as the “growth zone”. Students are given the opportunity to experience, reflect, internalise and share what they have learned.  Simulation Games and Experiential Activities: These simulate or mimic the characteristics of real-life situations and allow students to review their experiences in a manner that deepens individual understanding and develops individual skill competencies. This equips them to learn how to respond to similar situations in the future in new ways. Contact us: Phone 036 4889015 info@emsenicamp.co.za www.emsenicamp.co.za Facebook

Life Skills learned at Camp Sending your kids to camp isn’t just a vacation; it is indeed an atmosphere for positive youth development where invaluable life skills are acquired. Summer camp, according to the studies, fosters emotional intelligence (or EQ), self-confidence, independence, healthy living, environmental awareness, leadership and other skills that prove beneficial long into adulthood.

Going to camp is certainly a big step in becoming more independent, especially for youngsters. Campers are sleeping away from home for a week or more, they wake up every morning with the freedom to choose what to wear, and how they would like to spend the day without anyone's input. Children are also encouraged to step out of their comfort zones and engage in activities they would never have thought to participate in before. Safety protocols are the priority, which allows children to make independent decisions and to take risks while being absolutely safe. Camp counselors and peers cheer together to motivate each child to face the challenges ahead with courage and confidence.

Children have become too consumed by sedentary activities like browsing social media, smartphones, the internet, television and video games. While camp introduces kids to more active and social ways to have fun. Camp is a Technology-Free Zone. Campers wake up early, get a full day of physical activity, eat regular meals and spend a lot of time exploring the outdoors. The positive and fun environment influences kids to love a healthy lifestyle, without feeling that it has been imposed onto them.

Campers spend so much time having fun outdoors that they are in the perfect place to begin to appreciate and learn about nature. Holiday camps like Sugar Bay, encourage kids to explore and enjoy the outdoors for all that it's worth. It is with this positive sentiment for nature, that campers can hope to continue their outdoor experiences by making their own efforts to conserve nature.

activities encourage kids to demonstrate or learn a skill that can be attributed to good leadership. Some activities require social skills like teamwork, listening and obedience; while others require personal skills like selfdiscipline, honesty and perseverance. All of which contribute to the passive learning of leadership qualities. Some camps like Sugar Bay also extend the opportunity to improve leadership skills by offering training courses for being a camp counselor, which is one of the most significant leadership roles at camps.

At camp, the children teach themselves and each other the meaning of good behavior. They learn discipline by listening, observing and following the instructions and good examples of their peers and supervisors. Campers are anxious to behave and listen to the instructions to avoid making mistakes, or missing out on tasks, because of bad behavior. Many parents will agree that the self-discipline learned at camp is definitely taken home.

Sugar Bay Holiday Camp is located on the North Coast of KZN with over 15 years of experience in organising group camps for schools and organisations from all over the world. We offer: • • • • • • • •

UNDERSTANDING

Communication is the scale on which all our The first step to effective communication is learning to listen. relationships balance, without effective communication speaking, listening and understanding there will always be James 1 v 19- Amplified Version a tilted scale and ineffectiveness. Understand this, my beloved brothers and sisters. Let The goal in effective communication is to achieve a everyone be quick to hear [be a careful, thoughtful listener], perfect balance of understanding between the collaborating slow to speak [a speaker of carefully chosen words and], slow parties. In the camp environment the skill of communication to anger [patient, reflective, forgiving] is tested on many levels. The campers must listen carefully to the briefing of the instructor. They must engage and listen with understanding or will be ineffective and perhaps not safe in the task they have been set. They must then plan together as a team in order to complete the challenge. Often as a camp counsellor I hear teams arguing because there are two parties who have the solution to the challenge; they are both trying to impart the same idea, but because they are not listening to one another in the urgency of being heard, they don’t realise that they both actually want to solve the task in the same way. At our camp we do an activity called “Gutter Roll” –we have aluminium gutters that a team must join together to cover a set distance and then run a ping pong ball along the gutters. There are 4 rules. The ball is not allowed to stop, it’s not allowed to roll back and it’s not allowed to fall off the gutters and lastly the whole team must participate. Sounds simple enough; but with a team of 10 and only four gutters this seemingly simple task can create great frustration and breakdown in communication. The teams that complete the challenge effectively are those who appoint one person to lead the group and all agree to listen carefully to that one person. This challenge creates a great awareness in the learners that, at times, listening achieves the best understanding and leads the team to reaching their goal.

Volunteers 'staff' the camps. They are what make the programmes amazing and they are just incredible. They take care of any personal care needs our participants might have, assist with getting around and plan and run our activities. They are usually students or young working people who take time off to make a difference in the lives of our amazing participants. As a result they also gain great experience working with people who have disabilities, which we believe is beneficial to their own communities and spheres of influence.

We believe that every visitor passing through has an impact and makes a difference – either positively or negatively. We are deeply grateful for every thought, word or deed that actively seeks to honour the Lord’s presence on our land. And we are deeply concerned about anything that casually or purposefully dishonours Him.

GOODLAND ESTATE is a Christian establishment that has been dedicated to the Lord. We have been blessed so richly by the Lord that we earnestly seek to channel this blessing to everyone who comes through our gates. We have also been blessed very richly by visiting groups who have established places of worship. We sincerely wish every visitor to be touched by the living presence of the Lord on our land, and to experience his blessing, peace, healing and regeneration.

In this vein we actively discourage excessive use of alcohol, music that is heard outside the walls of the building where it is played, noisy quadbikes, littering, etc. And we welcome every visitor who reveres and enjoys this wonderful world created for and entrusted to us. THE PUZZLE PIECE

It lay on the table all by it self It wasn't a large piece, so I couldn't make out the picture It was just a random piece of puzzle I was puzzled at the puzzle piece Why was it there, it seemed so incomplete? To me something was lost I suspected it may be part of me Was I incomplete, not whole? What was missing? Lord, if this is me, where is the rest of me? Are You working on such a small piece? I am uncomfortable Son, I don't need the picture on the box That piece you see is right where I mean it to be I see you completely, because of Jesus! - Stan Dugmore

Situated in a malaria free part of the Limpopo Province of South Africa, nestled in the mountains is the home of a life changing experience. of Magoebaskloof, Being only three hours from Pretoria, the Warriors academy is ideally positioned to offer a variety of camps, leadership programs and activities for schools and youth groups. We also run a gap year program for school leavers and now more recently have introduced an Outdoor Pursuits Multi Activity Instructors Development Program.

We offer a selection of adventure, personal growth and leadership options to school and youth groups both from South Africa and abroad, that have stood the test of time and ensure that each and every child in the program has an experience of a lifetime. Our program is designed to develop young people through a series of practical and innovative methods. We make it our mission not to run the same programme that our patrons have had on previous camps, but rather to have a fresh combination of activities designed to really challenge the participants. Having Fun is a key ingredient found in all our activities and everyone is encouraged to engage fully throughout the course. We have a large dedicated staff and an intensive program guaranteed to keep our visitors busy from the moment they arrive. Our course themes are a combination of physical, mental and emotional activities designed to focus on key components of personal and leadership development. We collaborate with our clients, tailoring the course to suit their individual preferences and time frames. We can accommodate groups from twenty to one hundred and twenty in our new tent Village, giving participants an exciting camping experience. Here they will be able to bond with fellow participants under the supervision of a highly motivated and dedicated staff. The program focuses on personal growth through adventure and challenge, and we employ an innovative approach to the delivery thereof. We also have an “Every child matters philosophy so we ensure that each and every child in the program is catered for in all aspects of the program.

Giant tree climb, Underground maze, Pancake making, Obstacle course, Initiative exercises, Potjie competition, Theatre evening, Walk the plank, Giant See Saw, Night walk, Wide game, Orienteering, Sports/fitness training, Crazy olympics, Team building, Warriors Compass time and many more. Each program will be set in accordance with the season and predicted weather in mind so the combination of group activities may vary from one Program to the next. However, our key concepts remain a focus in the presentation of the program.

•Leadership Development – •Adventure through play •Character development •Resolution enhancement •Risk taking and management •Group dynamics •Fitness training

This will vary depending on each schools’ individual choices. A typical WYLD course will be five days and four nights. We provide young people with the edge on a future with promise and potential and we equip young people with skills that stand out on applications to universities and in the eyes of potential employers. We know that competencies such as an understanding of EQ skills, time, stress and conflict management , leadership, and now more recently ”followship”, team work and collaborative problem solving and creativity will become increasingly important in a global economy. Coupled with an acute personal, environmental and social awareness, young graduates have to be carefully prepared to enter the job market with skills and competencies not always fully provided by even the best schools. To address this we have designed a range of programs that enhance and enrich existing areas of personal development and produce ‘stand out global citizens’ complementing modern parenting needs - We are passionate about equipping young men and women with the skills and life experiences they need to succeed at university, in a career and in life and to create the environment for personal and professional growth. The Warriors program is distilled into 5 pillars which are integrated and delivered in 4 quests of seven weeks each. Each quest has a flagship adventure activity complemented with a rich and varied assortment of diverse activities. These are available over different time periods during the year to cater for increasing requests from schools, youth institutions and parents. Each is showcased on our website. Although we recommend full year participation, each quest with its unique features, make it possible for a student to join in at any time of the year and participate in a range of experiences that are designed around the 5 pillars: • Core Skills (EQ fitness) – strengthening the inner being. • Epic Skills - Driving resilience and character growth through adventure. • Self Skills - Part 1: How to develop and present a digital presence to the real world. Part 2: An introduction to the commercial world. • We Skills - Embracing the gift of giving – extensive community service • Eco Skills - Engagement with the natural world: conservation and wildlife appreciation.

The Warriors Seasonal Quest Programs are designed for young adults who are looking for real direction, change and purpose. The foundation of the Programs is to support the transition of entering adulthood. Being completely different from the typical well-worn commercial gap-years, Warriors has had remarkable results and success for over a decade. Past Parents and Warriors become one big family, and all their references about their amazing experiences speak for themselves.

After the successful year on the Warriors gap year program participants may apply for the Multi Activity Instructor Development Program. This is a selected portfolio of outdoor pursuit skills designed to fully equip a graduate with the required to enter employment in the adventure industry. With this training our graduates will have the qualification, skills and experience needed to get a jumpstart in the adventure guiding industry. This is a two-year Program starting in the Warriors Gap year program with the Second year focusing more on instructor traits. There is a growing need in South Africa to not only train outdoor pursuits instructors, but to do so at a standard comparable with the international arena. • • • • • • • •

Our aim is to train instructors, not only for the South African Market, but also for the wider more diverse international arena. Warriors instructors receive training from professional facilitators, each of whom are highly experienced and qualified in their respective fields of expertise. With adventure guides being in such short supply in South Africa, and a growing need for experienced and qualified multi-activity instructors, Warriors Academy has set about developing this course and aim at being national leaders in the training of such personnel.

The town’s other attractions are scuba diving, rock fishing, dolphin and whale spotting, and the dazzling Gamtoos River valley, noted for its bird life. Grahamstown, originally a military outpost, with its Georgian and Victorian buildings, is where the 1820 British settlers came ashore as part of the British colonial government’s efforts to populate the interior with white people from England. These days it is best known for the annual National Arts Festival, the largest of its kind in Africa. Grahamstown is also a vibrant university town, home to Rhodes University.

In the interior of the province is Cradock, a Karoo town known for resistance politics. It is also the place where Olive Schreiner lived, best known for her novel The Story of an African Farm. She is buried in the hills outside the town. Also near the town is the Mountain Zebra National Park, a conservation success story which is saving the mountain zebra species from extinction. The historic town of Graaff-Reinet, with a town centre preserved largely intact from 1786, was the birthplace of Robert Sobukwe, founder of the Pan Africanist Congress. Situated within the beautiful 1,000 hectare Umhloti Nature Reserve, 15 kilometres outside Nelspruit, the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) South Africa Chimpanzee Sanctuary is home to chimps that have been misplaced from their natural habitats in Africa. Chimp Eden was established in 2006 and is home to 33 chimpanzees. This JGI chimpanzee sanctuary brings the world of chimpanzees closer to humanity through education end eco-tourism. The goal of the chimpanzee sanctuary is to rescue chimpanzees that have survived the bush meat trade, been orphaned, traded in the illegal pet market, or rescued from being traumatised for entertainment in circuses, beach resorts and night clubs.

Thomas

Bazia

Charlie The chimpanzees at Chimp Eden are the lucky ones, living out their lives in a risk free environment and being provided with the necessary attention to recover from the trauma they have experienced. The chimpanzees spend their days in semi-wild enclosures, and show normal social interaction and behavioural patterns as group members. The South African chimpanzee sanctuary is proud to be part of the Jane Good Institute, which is a global leader in the effort to conserve and preserve endangered species and habitats, and in particular chimpanzees.

On your guided tour, each chimpanzee is introduced and their often sad stories are told in an effort to create awareness and educate the guests on the struggles wild chimpanzees face and what we all can do to help save an protect these beautiful creatures for our future generations.

Martha The sanctuary is open to the public 7 days a week. Two chimpanzee families are visited on the 3 daily tours (10:00am, 12:00pm &14:00pm)

The sanctuary is a non-profit organization and rely greatly on donations from the public and the guests that visit the sanctuary and support us by doing a tour, becoming a chimpanzee guardian or simply buying a unique gift in our curio shop.

Maropeng Maake - TUT Student Wellness Recreation Management

Wellness recreation management Humans are social creatures from the moment that we are born. We start off our life in a group of family, then nursery school group, school groups, career groups and finally old age groups. We are born with this need to be in groups, as this helps us discover ourselves and our abilities, it teaches us social interaction and is a foundation of our being.

A person’s day has 24hours in that 24 hours , 8 hours would be for school and work, another 8 hours for sleep and the last 8 hours for recreation and leisure. The 8 hours designated for recreation and leisure each day is in most cases not managed properly. If managed in a positive way it will contribute and benefit our lives. If not managed this time will en up being used for bad recreation that will affect our lives negatively and those around us too. Bad recreation includes drug intake, alcohol abuse, engaging in sexual activities that can affect a young person both physically en emotionally. Wellness recreation management helps use manage our leisure time and also embraces our social needs positively and is best performed in groups of people that we interact on a daily basis. It can be categorised in the following groups THERAPEUTIC WELLNESS RECREATION Through outdoor settings (natural environment) we are able to present constructive therapeutic life skills projects to kids and adults. This life skills are meant to empower people emotionaly and spiritually through a) Nature: activities in, and interaction with animals and nature for a healing process

b) Arts: through arts (music, drama and visual art) which is art therapy to effectively grow creative thinking and creative development c) Relationship building and discliplineship: through social interaction and team building activities we receive healing, renewed hope and insipiration to live out our dreams through the help of those around us.

• As wellness recreation managers the development and growth of people is of vital importance to us and through management of recreation and leisure we are able to teach a) Teach leadership theories: through this skills and theories from leadership philosophers we are able to install leadership and the power to have authority in all that we do and discover the leadership traits we have for both personal and being able to lead a group of people b) Intrapersonal and interpersonal development • In this category we are able to deal with matters of value to every persons life a) Team work b) Respect c) Intergrity d) Excellence e) Honesty f) Social cohesion g) Character building h) Positive sexuality

South Africa is a diverse and beautiful country with many vital resources which need to be preserved for the future generation from a variety of indigenous plants and animals. Recreation management uses this natural enviroments and we see the importance of resources, therefor it is imperitave that we teach people how to preserve take care of our environment through environmental stewardship With this all said why not trust a recreation manager and book for an adventure camp for your school, church or organisation at a camp site. We are recreation managers. We are creating communities through well managed recreation.

Educational Model The educational model for Camp2Grow progresses from awareness to stewardship. The role of affinity for nature is also reflected in this model (Figure 1).

Leadership Lessons The following lessons represented the required minimum curriculum for implementation by participating Camp 2 Grow camps in the summer of 2009. These LifeKnowledge® lessons target knowledge and skill development in core leadership areas: Leadership, Character, Teamwork, Building Relationships, Service and Citizenship, Planning, and Problem-Solving. Integrated into these lessons were customized environmental applications that provided youth with an opportunity to consider how lessons were related to specific environmental stewardship actions. Also integrated into the curriculum was the creation of a “take-home” stewardship action plan, which allowed youth to demonstrate leadership in their homes, neighborhoods, or communities to address a personal environmental-related topic, issue, or problem. The Problem Solving and Planning lessons were structured so that youth could develop their action plans. The Camp 2 Grow curriculum was implemented in a majority of participating camps in either one-week or two week sessions. Each lesson required between 45-60 minutes for completion. Camps were able to add additional lessons from the LifeKnowledge® series, as long as the required curriculum was covered.

Nature The reasons why I think it’s important for kids to spend time in nature… • Learn about nature, issues, preservation • Love being outdoors and in different setting • A chance to explore and learn new things • Learn about self

“so they understand the world they live in and why it’s important to try and save it.” “Because it can really spread and widen your world view in a positive way, and because it will create good memories.” “it puts them in a different area of comfort for them to explore and be themselves.” “because they should know that there is more to living than TV, Computers, and all that junk.” “It can help you learn to make your own fun. When you don’t have electronics there is less to do but you can still have fun. People need to know that.” Being at camp has influenced the way I think about nature and being outdoors by helping me… • Appreciate and enjoy nature • Learn and respect for nature/living things • Simplify (away from tech) • Lessen my fears • Have fun

Leadership Leadership was a predominant point of reflection to the campers. They wrote about the importance of positive attitude, setting goals, and having strong communication skills. The following quotes are illustrative of some of these ideas they shared when asked to define a leader.

“There are many words you can use to describe a leader: determined, outgoing, hard work, humble, courageous, and many more. To me to be a leader, you need the capacity to listen to others, accept what they said, and make a solution to problems. Also leaders must be able to lead and persuade others into following them. “ “A leader is one that leads by example. In my opinion a leader takes charge to be their self but at the same time, shows that they can and will make things better! You never have to wait for someone to tell you the rights and wrongs- you just know from being a responsible young adult. ‘In order to be a leader, you must lead by example’- this is a quote that I take upon myself everyday no matter the case.” “A leader is a person who influences others in a positive way. A type of person who takes a stand for what they want to do. A person who wants to do something or have goals, and they put their mind to it to achieve them. I am a leader but I still need to work on taking my stand!”

“makes me realize just how important nature is to me and why it is good to spend time in it and learn about it.” “teaching me that sometimes being outside in the fresh air is better than sitting indoors with the AC on and the TV running.” “Seeing how green the plants and trees are- also seeing the animals that I wouldn’t see often too.” “conquering a lot of my fears and working hard with others.” “a lot! A lot because I feel like it’s regular being in nature now.”

Conclusions and Recommendations Conclusions

Recommendations

In summary, camps have long provided a means for helping people learn valuable life skills. Leadership and environmental stewardship are key areas for intentional focus in camps. Being with other youth develops personal skills but a purposeful leadership program can enhance those efforts. In addition, most camps utilize nature as a context for learning. Developing a positive attitude towards the outdoors and a meaningful connection to nature is a first step in encouraging environmental stewardship on a broader level. Camp 2 Grow offered a way to address both leadership and environmental awareness for young people.

Youth program providers interested in targeting leadership and environmental stewardship outcomes are encouraged to consider the following recommendations.

The Camp 2 Grow evaluation results suggest a number of conclusions based on this second year of program implementation. Camp2Grow participants gained in positive youth outcomes related to independence, empowerment, problem-solving, and nature stewardship. Youth experienced growth in their emotional connection to nature (affinity for nature) as a result of the Camp2Grow experience in a camp setting. The 2010 findings support the findings from the 2009 Camp 2 Grow pilot, suggesting that older campers may gain important leadership skills, such as independence and problem solving, as well as form important connections to nature when they participate in an intentionally-designed environmental leadership curriculum at camp. This study adds to existing camp literature on environmental educational and youth development by documenting the ways campers might develop environmental stewardship during their time at camp. The findings also support the implementation of intentionally-designed curricula such as the Camp 2 Grow program as an effective learning strategy to reach desired outcomes.

Camp 2 Grow

Camp 2 Grow was an appropriate program framework for teaching youth about leadership and nature stewardship. Youth who received the greatest benefits from Camp2Grow were older campers who were participating as counselors in training (CITs) or leaders in training (LITs) and who had direct opportunities at camp to apply the knowledge and skills they learned in the program. Camp 2 Grow is recommended as a framework for, or a component of, a CIT or LIT program for older youth. The connections made between the camp experience, leadership training, and teaching youth about environmental stewardship should be encouraged as a purposeful triangulated approach to youth development in camp-related contexts. Camp experiences should be intentionally and purposefully promoted as a way to get children into the outdoors so that they can gain an appreciation for nature and how it needs to be preserved for the future. The dual mission of getting children into the outdoors and helping them be environmentally aware can be accomplished through camp. The environmental stewardship projects that youth completed when they returned home were not evaluated. Youth may need additional community support when they return home from camp to facilitate the completion of projects. We encourage camps implementing programs like Camp 2 Grow to consider ways to facilitate both leadership opportunities and environmental projects while youth are at camp to reinforce the learning that they might apply later when they return home. Additional home and community resources may facilitate completion of post-camp environmental stewardship projects.
