October 2016

I realized if you can change a classroom, you can change a community, and if you change enough communities you can change the world. Erin Gruwell As we are heading into the the penultimate edition for 2016, one looks at the past year and try to plan. This is the time we ultimately put budgets and goals forward for the year ahead. 2016 Has had quite a few lessons to our editorial team and much has been done to put together an interesting and effective publication for our readers and advertisers. The one significant icon that has made 2016 a memorable year is the road trip we had during the first 6 months to many of our featured camp sites. This had broadened our view to not only information sharing to teachers about the South African Recreational and Experiential industry, but also in the significant difference our publication is making and can make to many camp sites throughout the country. South Africa is an un chartered landscape of innovate and inspiring camps for the youth of our country. Our publication’s focus is to create an understanding of the importance of the recreational industry in the educational system in South Africa. The feedback from various avenues is that we are succeeding in this cause. This makes us look towards the future with hope and determination. ALLES Magazine will continue to inform and assist both teachers and camp managers with our pool of resources and partners By having a structured industry and regular interaction, ALLES Magazine is changing the industry one person at a time. We hope you enjoy our October edition! Join our team on facebook.com/allesmagazine and tell us all about your camp experiences. Mona Preller - Editor

WHERE WE ARE SITUATED

We take pleasure in this opportunity to introduce to you our Em’seni Conference Centre and camp. “Em’seni” means “Place of Grace” and we believe that this is experienced by all who visit Em'seni. With its incredible natural beauty, Em'seni is a place where people will discover spiritual, emotional and psychological healing and wholeness.

•2.5 hours from Durban •3.5 hours from Gauteng •16 km from Winterton •30 km from Ladysmith

Situated on the banks of the Tugela River below Spioenkop Dam and nestling in the valley between Winterton & Ladysmith. The origins of Em’seni came from the need to create a home base for Scripture Union Independent Schools camping and the site operates as their home base. However, we were aware that many others will be able to make use of these wonderful facilities as well, and so Em'seni operates as a facility in its own name. WHY USE EM'SENI?

After 11 years of existence, Em’seni has been used for School field trips, Adventure camps, Church groups, Confirmation camps, Leadership & Prefect courses, Scripture Union Winter & Summer camps, and YWAM events. We are the base for the Berg and Bush Mountain Bike race, Oxpecker Trail Run and many specialized courses.

FACILITIES Em'seni offers about 130 beds, in combinations of up to 8 in a room. Quality ablutions adjoin the bedrooms. A large dining room and separate conference hall with smaller alcoves and meeting rooms allows for ample meeting space for 150 people. A modern industrial kitchen is fully equipped and food standards are high. Em'seni does not allow groups to self-cater, but instead its competent staff satisfy the physical needs while programme leaders can focus on intellectual, spiritual and other needs. Staff and other adults are accommodated in quality chalets.

Flexible program facilitation Good conferencing spaces Team Building activities Leadership activities Low Ropes Course Raft Building experiences Hikes and Orienteering Boer War History Sports Fields

RUN YOUR OWN PROGRAM OR PARTNERSHIP WITH OUR COMPETENT STAFF Em'seni is very flexible in how you make use of our facility. You are welcome to book it and run your own programme. Alternatively, we will work with you to make a personalised programme to meet your specific needs. We do have installed sound and data projection facilities and white boards are available. ON SITE AND SURROUNDING AREAS

On site there is a swimming pool and spectacular Tugela River frontage, which offer many water opportunities including a “bum slide” and kayaking. A large field, and volleyball courts allows for any number of games and other fun activities. Lovely river walks and access to the Spioenkop Game reserve and dam nearby increase options for activities. Em'seni is a birders paradise. The historical Spioenkop Mountain towers nearby and offers a glimpse into the Anglo-Boer war. Many schools use us as a base for touring the KZN Battlefields, with qualified guides available.

LIMINAL SPACE AND TEMPORARY COMMUNITY “All transformation takes place in liminal space. Nothing fresh or creative emerges when we are inside our selfconstructed comfort zones, only more of the same. Much of the work of the biblical God and human destiny itself is to get people into liminal space and to keep them there long enough to learn something essential and genuinely new. It is the ultimate teachable space…” Richard Rohr in Adam’s Return. At Em'seni we understand that getting young people out of their normal spaces and home comfort or discomforts is essential for making an impact on their lives. Liminal space is the in-between space, where the normal and expected is not present and new real things can happen. It is the threshold of the new, the doorway from the old – the pause before going forward. The creation of a Temporary Community takes place on a camp experience and elements that enable this process are being in Nature, with comfortable surroundings and minimal rules. This allows the young person to relax unwind and be ready to receive new ideas an challenges on how they live and perceive reality. An understanding of comfort, growth and panic zones is essential in creating a good teachable moment. A teachable moment, in education, is the time at which learning a particular topic or idea becomes possible or easiest. If a young person is in “panic” mode then learning shuts down and survival takes over. If a young person is in comfort zone then they can do and say the right things but there is little change potential. Processing helps young people make connections between their educational experiences and real life, as well as future learning. It helps them realize that they can apply the lessons they learn and skills they use in a “contrived environment” to real life issues. Processing helps create purpose, meaning, and focus of an activity and helps learners take advantage of teachable moments. These are things we understand, build into our programmes and impact on young lives, so join us at Em'seni and together we will build the future.

Sasol Young Explorer – Frogs is the second app in the new Young Explorer nature series for kids. Colourful, informative and stimulating, Frogs introduces young children (3–8 years old) to 55 of the most common and rare frog species found in southern Africa. The descriptions of the animals – in English, isiXhosa, isiZulu and Afrikaans – are written in easy and accessible language and narrated by professional voice-over artists. There are also calls for all the frogs, except one – the only voiceless species in the region – while videos for 29 species show these delightful creatures in their natural habitat. ‘Quick facts’ about the size, egg type, location and conservation status of each species are revealed by toggling between illustrations of the different features on the screen. The app includes a play section with four games: puzzles, memory card games, an animal naming game and a nature cleanup game. There are lots of opportunities to tap, toggle, touch and swipe, listen, watch, and learn. Perfect for pre-readers and young learners, the app will keep kids engaged and help them learn about the fascinating creatures that we share our world with.

Running Camp Programs for “At Risk Youth” - Alan Champkins

There was a time in my career of running camps where I looked at the term “Youth at Risk” as a sort of mythical pinnacle that only highly qualified professionals got to work with. This was the realm of psychologists and social workers and I had no place in it. Yet in my heart I knew that the camp environment, the camp community, the camp experiences and the outdoors could only have a positive influence in the lives of those termed at risk. Today, I still don’t regard myself as a highly qualified professional, or an expert at youth at risk. Rather I have been fortunate to have opportunities to work with youth at risk and it remains something close to my heart.

Ok, I know that’s the simple version but in all honesty it is the best place to start. I never imagined myself working with drug and gang rehabilitation programs but I do. For most of them I run the same or similar camp program as I would for a small group of high school students. The only difference is in the expected outcomes which are normally specific to the organization we’re running the program for and the safety/security of the participants and others on the camp. The Youth at Risk programs we run at Simonsberg Christian Centre all form part of a formal in house program run by a recognized Addiction Treatment Centre which includes professional trained counsellors, social workers and psychologists. The Treatment Centre has seen the value of bringing the ‘addicts' on camp and experienced the life changing effects of the time away in the lives of those on their programs.

In hindsight I would say that every one of us who runs camp programs has had the opportunity to work with youth at risk in some form or other! You It really is a mutually beneficial relationship. may have even worked with them without even knowing it! However there are some keys that one should consider if you are planning to approach such organWhy? Because Youth at Risk is a broad field which isations and work with them. can simply be defined as “A person who is less likely to transition successfully into adulthood” 1) Do not mix groups on camps - You cannot normally have a school group and a youth at risk Now think of those who you have run a camp procamp sharing the same premises. Some of the gram for? youth who come with the treatment centre we work with are hardened criminals and have gang Have you ever run a camp for kids who come from and violence histories that would shock most. a disadvantaged community? You don’t want to put anyone at risk. It’s not From a broken home? worth it. An abusive environment? Father - son camps? 2) Clearly define your own camp rules and regulaFor someone struggling with an addiction? tions. Set clear boundaries and expectations with Or someone with emotional issues? the Treatment Centre. Work according to their expectation for the camp, not yours. They have Well guess what? You’ve already worked with specific goals to achieve and the participants are someone who is by definition going to struggle to with them for a number of weeks. If you work become a fully successful adult. Put is as a feather against them or with your own agenda, at best, in your cap, take the mystery out of it and do what they will not return! At worst you may destroy a you do best! Run a great camp program for them good foundation that has already been built beand watch the change. fore coming to you.

3) Work with a small group and ensure the Treatment Centre staff are on hand at all times. I work with a group of between 8- 16 teenagers and there are at least 3 social workers on hand during the activities to make notes on each person and to ensure discipline. 4) Be firm and fair. No forms of violence, gangster talk or gang affiliation and recruitment or any intimidation to others in the group is tolerated. 5) Make it fun! It’s tough being on a recovery program! Not only that, but most of the participants have grown up in an environment of violence and abuse. They don’t need an army drill instructor they need someone who will not judge them. Someone who will value them, help them and give them an experience they most probably have never had in their life before. Show them that there is life outside of their current situation. Create hope and give them vision for a successful future. Create opportunities for life changing decisions. Don’t judge them. They’ve had enough of that all their lives. 6) Some of the key issues to address when designing your activities are: Trust, Giving and Receiving help, Decision Making, Perseverance (Not quitting!) Dealing with Aggression, Blame and taking Personal Responsibility and of course Setting Goals 7) The hardest part of facilitating camp programs for Youth at Risk is that most of them know exactly what answers you are looking for. They can also be very manipulative. I let the results of the activities speak for themselves and am not shy to tell them if I think they are acting just to please me. Be real with them. Ask the hard questions. Challenge them. You have one opportunity to radically change someones life. Don’t hold back. Say what you need to say BUT say it in love!

8) And lastly - We all hear and talk about ‘Respect' and the need to respect others and be respected. Everyone wants it. But few understand that respect is the result of something far more important. True respect comes naturally when you see people as valuable! Respect is merely the fruit on a tree called Value! Make it one of your goals to show those who the world says has no future that they are valuable and valued! That they are valued by God and by those around them. That they can see value in their own lives again. That is what makes the difference and will set you apart from other groups doing similar! Working with youth at risk is incredibly challenging and often the rewards are few. My heart rejoices when I hear the success stories. It weeps when I realize what most have to go back to and how hard it really is for them to change in their communities. You and I may have started the race of life rolling a ball towards the goal. They have started the same race trying to roll a square! The odds are stacked against them. But that does not mean you cannot make a difference William Booth , the founder of the Salvation Army, wrote “Go straight for souls , and go for the worst” If you change the worst in a community you change the whole community!!! Working with Youth at Risk gives you the opportunity not only to make a difference in one life but to change a family, a neighborhood and a community. That’s how powerful the testimony is. It’s not a mythical pinnacle that needs to be reached before you can do that. It’s the ability to reach into the deepest, darkest hole and pull someone out. Just like Jesus did for you! He’s given you His heart. Run with it.

Situated in a malaria free part of the Limpopo Province of South Africa, nestled in the mountains is the home of a life changing experience. of Magoebaskloof, Being only three hours from Pretoria, the Warriors academy is ideally positioned to offer a variety of camps, leadership programs and activities for schools and youth groups. We also run a gap year program for school leavers and now more recently have introduced an Outdoor Pursuits Multi Activity Instructors Development Program.

We offer a selection of adventure, personal growth and leadership options to school and youth groups both from South Africa and abroad, that have stood the test of time and ensure that each and every child in the program has an experience of a lifetime. Our program is designed to develop young people through a series of practical and innovative methods. We make it our mission not to run the same programme that our patrons have had on previous camps, but rather to have a fresh combination of activities designed to really challenge the participants. Having Fun is a key ingredient found in all our activities and everyone is encouraged to engage fully throughout the course. We have a large dedicated staff and an intensive program guaranteed to keep our visitors busy from the moment they arrive. Our course themes are a combination of physical, mental and emotional activities designed to focus on key components of personal and leadership development. We collaborate with our clients, tailoring the course to suit their individual preferences and time frames. We can accommodate groups from twenty to one hundred and twenty in our new tent Village, giving participants an exciting camping experience. Here they will be able to bond with fellow participants under the supervision of a highly motivated and dedicated staff. The program focuses on personal growth through adventure and challenge, and we employ an innovative approach to the delivery thereof. We also have an “Every child matters philosophy so we ensure that each and every child in the program is catered for in all aspects of the program.

Giant tree climb, Underground maze, Pancake making, Obstacle course, Initiative exercises, Potjie competition, Theatre evening, Walk the plank, Giant See Saw, Night walk, Wide game, Orienteering, Sports/fitness training, Crazy olympics, Team building, Warriors Compass time and many more. Each program will be set in accordance with the season and predicted weather in mind so the combination of group activities may vary from one Program to the next. However, our key concepts remain a focus in the presentation of the program.

•Leadership Development – •Adventure through play •Character development •Resolution enhancement •Risk taking and management •Group dynamics •Fitness training

This will vary depending on each schools’ individual choices. A typical WYLD course will be five days and four nights. We provide young people with the edge on a future with promise and potential and we equip young people with skills that stand out on applications to universities and in the eyes of potential employers. We know that competencies such as an understanding of EQ skills, time, stress and conflict management , leadership, and now more recently ”followship”, team work and collaborative problem solving and creativity will become increasingly important in a global economy. Coupled with an acute personal, environmental and social awareness, young graduates have to be carefully prepared to enter the job market with skills and competencies not always fully provided by even the best schools. To address this we have designed a range of programs that enhance and enrich existing areas of personal development and produce ‘stand out global citizens’ complementing modern parenting needs - We are passionate about equipping young men and women with the skills and life experiences they need to succeed at university, in a career and in life and to create the environment for personal and professional growth. The Warriors program is distilled into 5 pillars which are integrated and delivered in 4 quests of seven weeks each. Each quest has a flagship adventure activity complemented with a rich and varied assortment of diverse activities. These are available over different time periods during the year to cater for increasing requests from schools, youth institutions and parents. Each is showcased on our website. Although we recommend full year participation, each quest with its unique features, make it possible for a student to join in at any time of the year and participate in a range of experiences that are designed around the 5 pillars: • Core Skills (EQ fitness) – strengthening the inner being. • Epic Skills - Driving resilience and character growth through adventure. • Self Skills - Part 1: How to develop and present a digital presence to the real world. Part 2: An introduction to the commercial world. • We Skills - Embracing the gift of giving – extensive community service • Eco Skills - Engagement with the natural world: conservation and wildlife appreciation.

The Warriors Seasonal Quest Programs are designed for young adults who are looking for real direction, change and purpose. The foundation of the Programs is to support the transition of entering adulthood. Being completely different from the typical well-worn commercial gap-years, Warriors has had remarkable results and success for over a decade. Past Parents and Warriors become one big family, and all their references about their amazing experiences speak for themselves.

After the successful year on the Warriors gap year program participants may apply for the Multi Activity Instructor Development Program. This is a selected portfolio of outdoor pursuit skills designed to fully equip a graduate with the required to enter employment in the adventure industry. With this training our graduates will have the qualification, skills and experience needed to get a jumpstart in the adventure guiding industry. This is a two-year Program starting in the Warriors Gap year program with the Second year focusing more on instructor traits. There is a growing need in South Africa to not only train outdoor pursuits instructors, but to do so at a standard comparable with the international arena. • • • • • • • •

Our aim is to train instructors, not only for the South African Market, but also for the wider more diverse international arena. Warriors instructors receive training from professional facilitators, each of whom are highly experienced and qualified in their respective fields of expertise. With adventure guides being in such short supply in South Africa, and a growing need for experienced and qualified multi-activity instructors, Warriors Academy has set about developing this course and aim at being national leaders in the training of such personnel.

The performance of multiple activities Setting up and conducting Standard Operating Procedures of each activity All safety aspects of each activity Equipment care and maintenance for each activity Client care Administration requirements Basic general knowledge of common Fauna and Flora of South Africa Basic knowledge of Geography, Climatology and Astronomy of south Africa

SOA LEADERSHIP YEAR The Spirit of Adventure Leadership year differs from most others in that it is a working year. It consists of three main parts, namely working as an instructor, participating in adventurous excursions and committing to a study program for the year. Instructing We need young people just out of school to work as instructors with the school groups who attend the camp. The instructors are responsible for leading groups of about 10-12 people through adventurous activities and facilitating their learning and development throughout. We train the instructors in all aspects of the work so that they are competent and confident to maintain the extremely high standard of safety and quality we expect. They are then responsible for carrying out their duties and if done correctly, they have real daily opportunities to make a lasting difference in each individual’s life. Probably the best reason for taking our specific gap year would be the personal and skills development which occurs through the work and contact with persons of a variety of ages. This development will be invaluable throughout a person’s life. Instructors sign an employment contract, as required by law and are paid per day for working with groups. Accommodation and food is provided when working and studying.

Excursions We facilitate a number of adventure trips each year and we encourage each instructor to attend as many as their finances will allow. Currently these include paragliding, advanced rock climbing, scuba diving, Big 5 hiking and camping trips. These are perhaps a luxury but we have selected experiences and refined them over the years so that they will be meaningful and not just a “temporary high”. Most people will never get another chance to do a lot of what we offer and we are also able to offer slightly better prices because of group size and regular bookings etc.

Study We expect each instructor to engage in some sort of study program each year. It is there for a number of very good reasons such as making better/more informed decisions about a full study path, gaining more insight into career choices, ruling out potential career choices etc etc. There is a vast selection of distance learning institutions, courses and subjects out there to choose from. Sometimes just the quiet and distance from the home and city allows minds to think a little more clearly and see a bigger picture. The development of each of the instructors is of as much importance as the development of the school learners and we do our best to help and encourage each instructor to grow and make sound decisions from the year.

The Spirit of Adventure Magaliesberg is located next to the Olifantsnek dam looking onto the picturesque Retief’s Kloof. There is accommodation for up to 144 students in 12 sleeper cabins and 12 staff members in comfortable wooden cabins. Spirit of Adventure’s point of difference lies in its widely recognized adeptness at tailoring courses highly pertinent to the needs of each group based on the unusual and challenging nature of activities, and the relevance of the theoretical material used. Changing cycles of the Spirit of Adventure theory-activity-review discipline are used in various combinations to produce the desired results. Spirit of Adventure was founded in 1994 with the purpose of: • Developing the potential of young people • Conveying up to date effective leadership theory • Personal development • Team building through outdoor adventure Students are led in small teams by trained Instructors participating in our Leadership year programme. They are sensitive, enthusiastic, positive young people who work hard to ensure that each pupil is fully involved and fully supported as they face the challenges of the course. Our focus for every one of our course participants is to establish overall achievement and skills in leadership, personal development (self-esteem, self-confidence and in positive self-image) and team efectiveness, aiming to build co-operative relationships with other people.

“One of the reasons we use The Spirit of Adventure is your reputation for leadership training. Another is to expose our boys to different training styles and to bond and unite them as a team.” Dave Knowles, Head, St Stithians Boys’ College

“The course content was superb. All of our school objectives were met on camp. The course was the right length and the activities suitably varied and challenging.” St Andrew School for girls

Kamp Reynard forms part of the GOODLAND ESTATE, although it is situated on a different and separate farm on the opposite side of the Boekenhoutkloof. Although it is not a fenced game farm, it forms part of the Seringveld Conservancy and takes pride in the richness of its unspoiled nature.

We believe that every visitor passing through has an impact and makes a difference – either positively or negatively. We are deeply grateful for every thought, word or deed that actively seeks to honour the Lord’s presence on our land. And we are deeply concerned about anything that casually or purposefully dishonours Him.

GOODLAND ESTATE is a Christian establishment that has been dedicated to the Lord. We have been blessed so richly by the Lord that we earnestly seek to channel this blessing to everyone who comes through our gates. We have also been blessed very richly by visiting groups who have established places of worship. We sincerely wish every visitor to be touched by the living presence of the Lord on our land, and to experience his blessing, peace, healing and regeneration.

In this vein we actively discourage excessive use of alcohol, music that is heard outside the walls of the building where it is played, noisy quadbikes, littering, etc. And we welcome every visitor who reveres and enjoys this wonderful world created for and entrusted to us. HE MAKES ME LIE DOWN IN GREEN PASTURES HE LEADS ME BESIDE QUIET WATERS HE RESTORES MY SOUL (Psalm 23)

A secondary aim is to provide respite to parents and caregivers. They are able to rest and sometimes even have a holiday of their own whilst knowing that their loved one is having a wonderful time and is well taken care of. Volunteers 'staff' the camps. They are what make the programmes amazing and they are just incredible. They take care of any personal care needs our participants might have, assist with getting around and plan and run our activities. They are usually students or young working people who take time off to make a difference in the lives of our amazing participants. As a result they also gain great experience working with people who have disabilities, which we believe is beneficial to their own communities and spheres of influence.

Holiday Camp for Kids and Teens 7-17

Integrity at Camp Written by Selina Chetty & Christina Sukop Parents will only agree to send their kids to a stay-over camp if they completely trust the organization and the people who will be supervising and accompanying their children. Integrity is essential to building this kind of reputation for any children's camp. Integrity is a fundamental element for any holiday camp simply because it is a characteristic which is based on honesty, strong moral principles, uprightness, transparency and unity – all of which build trust with parents considering a sleepover holiday camp. When searching for the perfect holiday camp, these values should be present.

into the daily routine. It is here that the camp leaders need to set the standard for the children by being a positive example of good character and integrity. This is also where it becomes important for camp leaders to “practice what they preach” when leading impressionable young children and teenagers. At Sugar Bay Holiday Camp, both campers and counselors fill the atmosphere with polite greetings and gracious phrases like “please” and “thank you” at meal times. These small gestures and efforts make a significant difference when children return home.

Unity is another integral part of integrity at camp. A camp that is undivided is a camp that It is also helpful to find out what other people is successful and reliable.
