THE NORTH WEST PROVINCE

The North West Province is all about the authentic African bush experience and its hot, dry, African climate which is truly unique. A must see destination, diverse and exciting! We offer some of the finest game reserves, cultural sights, archaeological treasures, adrenalin adventures, as well as world class entertainment resorts. While visiting the North West, the traditional warmth of the province will be shared with you, as well as our pride in our history and culture. Our visitors can take home with them lasting memories of a special experience and the ultimate of enjoyment. Overview Early Warfare Pre-European history included conflicts between the local Tswana people and the migrating Ndebele people who left Zululand under their leader Mzilikasi to get away from the tyranny of Shaka. Wartime It was in the North West Province, in 1838, where General Potgieter settled after he defeated the armies of Mzilikazi at Kapain and Mosega. He was assisted in this effort by the Griqua and the Barolong, a terrorised tribe. Some of ancestors of these people still live in North West. Potgieter later left the area but not before founding the oldest town, north of the Vaal River, in South Africa, namely Potchefstroom. The Jameson Raid In 1895 the Jameson raid was launched from Mahikeng, another historic town in the North West. The aim of the raid was to topple the government of President Kruger, in the then South African Republic. The raid failed miserably. The Anglo-Boer War Mahikeng was in the main stream of South African history again during the early years of the AngloBoer War when the Boer forces besieged the town for 217 days, from 1899 until May 1900; during which time Sol Plaatje wrote his literary masterpiece “The Boer War Diary of Sol T Plaatje: an African at Mafikeng”.

QUICK FACTS ABOUT THE PLATUNIMUM PROVINCE

Plaatje was later to become one of the founding fathers of the South African Native National Congress, the forerunner of the African National Congress, in 1912. The first phase of the Anglo-Boer War lasted less than a year and was followed by two years of guerilla warfare. During that phase more engagements took place in the then Western Transvaal than in any other part of the country. Apart from the famous siege of Mafikeng, no less than 20 significant engagements took place during the 20 months between 7 August 1900 and 11 April 1902. These battles were spread evenly across the old Western Transvaal, now the Eastern half of the North West Province. More on the Anglo Boer War. The Union of South Africa After the formation of the Union of South Africa in 1910 most of the area now known as the North West formed part of the “old Transvaal”, throughout the period of Afrikaner nationalism and the founding of the Republic of South Africa in 1961. Homeland Policy During the leadership of BJ Vorster the implementation of the Homeland Policy lead to the incorporation of a large part of modern day North West into a homeland called Bophuthatswana, over which Lucas Mangope presided. Our Oldest Towns The three oldest towns in the old Transvaal are all located in the North West Province, being Potchefstroom,Klerksdorp and Rustenburg. The white settlement of the interior was aided by a process called the Difaqane, meaning “human scattering” and amounted to the almost frenzied movement of large communities away from the impi’s (armies) of Mzilikazi, with the result that the Boers found the interior largely unpopulated. Today The country was finally reincorporated into the North West Province under the new dispensation of the new Republic of South Africa in 1994.

NATURE : TOUR AND TRAVEL

The summer months (August to March) bring brief, refreshing afternoon thunderstorms. The sky is often amardi gras of electrical energy, a bruised sky opened up by flashes of brilliance. Summer temperatures range between 22°C & 34°C (71.6°F & 93.2°F) Winter brings with it dry, sunny days and chilly nights. The average winter (May to July) temperature is 15.5°C (60°F) but can range from an average of 2°C (35.6°F) to 20°C (68°F) in a single day. Effectively forming the southern part of the Kalahari Desert, the North West Province offers almost all year-round sunshine. Do not forget your suntan lotion and sun hat. Few days will be spent indoors staring at bleak weather! The North West is all about the authentic African bush experience and it is the hot, dry African climate which is truly unique. Small wonder, then, that so many indulge in the many water recreation facilities available throughout the province. Even less surprising that so many choose to stay in this place of uncompromisingly tempered, often intemperate climate. The North West Province is a must see destination – one that is diverse and exciting. We offer some of the finest game reserves, cultural sights, archaeological treasures as well as entertainment resorts. Visitors seeking to experience the wilderness and cultural treasures of the North West may do so conveniently because of it’s proximity to the Johannesburg International Airport and the major centres of Johannesburg and Pretoria. The agricultural and mining production in the North West plays a vital role in boosting the South African economy. The principal products are namely gold, platinum, diamonds, maize, beef and sunflower seeds. While visiting the North West, the traditional warmth of the province will be shared with you as well as the pride in the history and culture of the province. Visitors to the North West can take home with them lasting memories a special experience and enjoyment. Free Visits to under-resourced schools around Cape Town Cape Town is a city surrounded by beautiful biodiversity, abundant oceans, and readily accessible nature. But, it is also a growing city that faces the challenges of fulfilling the human needs of energy provision, clean drinking water, and waste disposal. Bringing these human and natural worlds together in a sustainable way takes what we call "Smart Living" - and in partnership with DHL we're bringing free sustainability outreach lessons to schools throughout that area. Smart Living is a mobile lesson, presented by outreach teacher Anzio Abels, designed for Grade 6 and Grade 7 learners. All lessons are CAPS-curriculum aligned, with a selection of themes: Biodiversity, energy, water, and waste. Teacher Anzio uses interactive, tech-savvy lessons to engage learners and communicate even the most complex concepts in fun, informative ways! To book, simply complete the online booking form on our Foundation's website here, or email schools@aquariumfoundation.org.z The Two Oceans Aquarium Education Foundation's outreach programmes are offered for free to under-resourced schools around Cape Town, thanks to our generous partners like DHL, and for a small fee to schools that have the capacity. Chat to your child's teachers about this opportunity! Our teachers are able to accommodate classes of up to 40 learners, for a maximum of 200 children a day (but we are happy to make multiple visits to the same school if you have a particularly big group). Dinokeng Africa in a Day

The Dinokeng Game Reserve is a large wildlife sanctuary in the province of Gauteng, South Africa, contiguous with Pretoria and Johannesburg. The reserve is the only wildlife sanctuary in Gauteng that offers Big five game free walks and is available for visitors to explore. It covers an area of approximately 21,000 hectares. Dinokeng is derived from the language of the Batswana and baPedi people, and is translated as “a place of rivers”.Back in 1997, at the time, the Premier of Gauteng, Tokyo Sexwale, announced a project to develop “Big Five” wild animal sanctuaries in the northeastern part of Pretoria. The main purpose of the government to build Dinokeng Game Reserve is to create tourism through the use of local natural resources, thereby increasing the employment rate and living conditions of local people. The goal is to promote local socio-economic development through the development of “all Africa” destinations, especially those that are historically disadvantaged. The government will help with this project and will work with local landowners to attract private sector investment and ultimately achieve a self-sufficient tourism-based local economy. The Gauteng Provincial Government and more than 170 landowners have developed the concept that ecotourism can be a source of sustainable rural employment for rural communities. The Dinokeng Game Reserve was officially opened on September 22, 2011. Big five animals such as leopard, lion, elephant, and buffalo were gradually re-introduced. Until 2018, a group of black rhinoceros was re-introduced into the reserve, making it the Big 5 Reserve in the true sense.

#2 CODES OF CONDUCT

One of the requirements of POPIA is that every organisation must have a code of conduct (‘COC’) that has been drafted or approved by the Information Regulator (‘IR’). The former can be created by individual businesses or by associations by and for their members. Clearly creating your own COC means that you or your association can create a document that addresses your particular needs rather than being generic. You may recall that the Consumer Protection Act (‘CPA’) required businesses to establish a COC – that was 10 years ago and one has to ask: ‘How many businesses did so’?!Likewise you may or may not know that the Consumer Goods & Services Ombudsman (‘CGSO’) drafted a COC that came into effect April 30 2015. It apples to and sets minimum standards for the consumer goods and services industry – see: http://cgso.org.za//codeofconsumergoodsandserviceso mbud Like

THE INFORMATION OFFICER & DEPUTIES (IO & DIO) There are good reasons to have a COC and here are a few reasons: ·Dealing with a business that has its own COC or belongs to an association with a COC creates confidence with customers and in the case of an association it also encourages membership ·Customers (Data Subject: ‘DS’) will feel more comfortable about disclosing and the processing of their personal information (‘PI’) ·Spelling out ‘cradle to grave’ PI management, creates a visible POPIA compliance policy and environment within your business The IR has published guidelines for the drafting of a COC (to be submitted to the IR for approval) and here are a few key indicators: ·Purpose and scope ·The processing of high risk PI ·Whether your business is local or international ·Monitoring compliance with the COC ·Consultation with stakeholders ·How breaches will be addressed ·Automated decision making by DS ·Complaint handling – must be e.g. plain language, readily available and fair NOTES FYI: RE COMPLAINTS SECTION OF COC SEE FOLLOWING WEBSITE https://www.justice.gov.za/inforeg/docs/InfoRegSA-StandardCodeOfConduct-Complaints-20210301.pdf GENERAL ENQ USE: https://www.justice.gov.za/inforeg/ AND https://www.justice.gov.za/inforeg/docs.html RE COVID USE FOLOWING: https://www.justice.gov.za/inforeg/docs/InfoRegSA-GuidanceNotePPI-Covid19-20200403.pdf https://www.justice.gov.za/inforeg/docs/InfoRegSACodesOfConduct-Draft-20191021.pdf https://www.justice.gov.za/inforeg/docs/InfoRegSACodesOfConduct-Draft-20191021.pdf © ADV LOUIS NEL Louis-THE-lawyer May 09 2021 DISCLAIMER - Each case depends on its own facts & merits - the above does not constitute advice - independent advice should be obtained in all instances
