THE BOSS

I

would like to welcome Gareth Ainsworth, his staff and the Wycombe Wanderers players to the Checkatrade Stadium this afternoon. They have made a great start to the campaign and appear to be suffering no hangover from last season, where they came so agonisingly close to getting out of this division.

The supporters who made the trip to Cambridge last Saturday saw us get our first win of the season. It was a really good disciplined performance in which we were the better team and totally deserved the three points. I’ve felt that we have been competitive in all the games to date, and should possibly have had more points. Those that came to the Portsmouth game and applauded the players’ efforts at the final whistle will have seen us produce a very hard working performance which we had to. It was our fourth game in ten days with the same group of players and in my opinion that is hard so early in the season. We knew Portsmouth were a very good side, so we set up to be very difficult to break down and play on the counter attack. I had hoped that we would be a little better in possession than we were, but we stuck at our task manfully and got a well earned point that gave us the confidence to do what we did at Cambridge. League Two is a tough physical division where you encounter many different hurdles you have to overcome every week. The physicality, the tempo, the www.crawleytownfc.com

tactics of the teams all differ from week to week. We want to play decent football, but we also want to succeed and we have to keep working on things on the training ground to make sure we keep improving. We have to be mindful of our opponents but mainly focus on ourselves. We’ve already given league debuts to a number of players this season. Last week was the turn of Christian Scales, who joined us from Crystal Palace on a youth loan until January 2. We were finally glad to get our man and we’re confident the young players in the group will enjoy their experience at the club. We have good relationships with a number of local clubs now and that is important.

Keep getting behind the players today - they need your support. Hopefully we will give you plenty to shout about, but sometimes I need you to lift the players. Together anything is possible.

ood afternoon and welcome to our game against Wycombe. We needed a good result last weekend and we certainly got it. We’re buzzing as a squad at the moment and there’s a sense of relief now that we’ve claimed our first win. There was a great feeling on the coach coming back from Cambridge and around the training ground at Ardingly during the last few days.

a week. But it will be like this throughout the season and it’s our job to make sure we’re prepared as a team so that when it comes to match day we’re ready. There was an abundance of positives to take from Saturday’s performance and I’m sure we can carry them into today’s clash.

I’m particularly proud of the result we got last week because nobody really gave us a chance against Cambridge, but we believed as a team that we could get three points and dug in hard to do so.

So we’ve got to do our homework in order to find out their strengths, and weaknesses, where we can hurt them and more. There are no guaranteed winners throughout the division from week to week so we need to turn up, kick on from last weekend and come away with another solid performance and hopefully three points.

I’d like to thank those of you who travelled to Cambridge, as you carried us through the game and without you the club wouldn’t be the same. We travel as a unit on our travels and this includes every single one of you. I have no doubts that you’ll continue to support the lads throughout the season. On a special note, I’m thrilled that Roarie has scored his first goal for Crawley and Gwion has continued his excellent start to the season - long may that continue. Every player has had a part to play so far, they’ve all been fantastic and I’m confident our good form can be taken into this afternoon.

It’s going to be a tough game today, no doubt about it. Wycombe have started where they left off last season and I guess they are an example to clubs like us who also have a small squad what can be achieved with spirit and togetherness.

I’m sure you will respect today’s minute’s silence, and on behalf of the lads I’d like to express condolences to everyone who lost loved ones or friends in the Shoreham Air Show tragedy. Keep getting behind the boys today!

Come on you Reds! Sonny

There’s been a lot of recovery this week, particularly after the tough start that we had and playing twice

ood afternoon and welcome to the Checkatrade.com Stadium. I’d like to begin by welcoming the visiting directors, players, officials and fans of Wycombe, 400 of whom will be in the away end today.

I would like to express my thanks to the 173 travelling Crawley fans that made the trip to Cambridge last Saturday. Every single one of you made your voices heard and pushed the team on to victory. Everyone involved with the club has been given a boost, following the Reds’ first win of the season last weekend. Since being with the club I believe it’s the best away result that I’ve witnessed, and it has certainly given everyone a lift within the club. I was also impressed that we claimed our second clean sheet of the season, and although it’s too early to make rash predictions, and there will be hiccups through the season, we now have a solid platform to build on going into today’s fixture.

2009

It will be a tough test for the side today against a Wycombe team side that currently sit second and took part in last year’s play-off final, and I’ve no doubt that they will be looking to go one step further this season. I’m pleased to announce that the Corner Flag Café is re-opening after undergoing electrical repairs, so that should ease congestion for

those wanted refreshments in the East Stand. This now allows Reggie’s Treats to revert back to being a facility for junior fans. For those that aren’t aware, Notts County have postponed next weekend’s fixture due to international callups, but it’s likely that the rearranged match will be played within the month. The Football League prefers clubs to date the fixtures as soon as possible, in order to avoid a congested end of season, and as soon as we know when it will be the information will be on the club website. There will be a minute’s silence today, prior to kick-off, as a mark of respect to those who tragically lost their lives at the Shoreham Air Show last Saturday. I’m sure that both sets of supporters will respect this as it is events like this that put football into perspective. We’re all part of the football family and we must come together in times like this. On behalf of everyone at the club, I would like to express our condolences to the families of those who lost loved ones or friends in the tragedy. You were all fantastic in our last home game against Portsmouth, and I have no doubts that you will support the Reds every step of the way during today’s game.

Cambridge Utd. 0 Crawley Town 3 • Deacon 39, 48 • Edwards 87

Reds enjoyed their best away win in the League since October 2011 after an outstanding display at previously unbeaten Cambridge. Having already hit the bar, Roarie Deacon opened the scoring with a turn and shot from 20 yards which took a deflection off Mark Roberts on its way past Chris Dunn. Deacon doubled the lead just after the break when he read Mark Harrold’s flick-on and held off Roberts before beating Dunn with a shot off the far post. Liam Donnelly was unluckily sent off for two yellow cards but Gwion Edwards scored his third goal of the season after Bobson Bawling’s shot was parried by Dunn with three minutes to go.

wycombe overview

Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth

Wycombe have shown no ill effects from the play-off heartache they suffered last season as they set the pace at the top of League 2 in the opening weeks of the new campaign. The club’s transformation is one of the success stories of the Football League narrative in the last 18 months. They only stayed up on the final day of the 201314 campaign after winning at Torquay and condemning Bristol Rovers to the drop, but last season went all the way to the play-off final at Wembley before losing on penalties to Southend United. Far from being disheartened by that www.crawleytownfc.com

blow, Wycombe began the campaign with three successive wins before dropping their first points last Saturday in a 1-1 draw against Dagenham & Redbridge when Aaron Pierre rescued a point with a goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time. Manager Gareth Ainsworth, who won the LMA Manager of the Year accolade for last season, took charge on a permanent basis in April 2012 and earlier this year signed a new five-year contract. And while the experienced Ainsworth would have been expecting his side to make the most of home advantage against the Daggers, the result did not entirely come as a surprise. “I said before the game this wasn’t top versus bottom. It was two League Two teams and anyone can beat anyone in this league and we’ve managed to get a point out of it. I’m still really pleased with the unbeaten start. The winning run has ended now which might not be that bad a thing because there is no pressure to keep that going. “In the first half we were poor and Dagenham were the better side. They went very direct

with two big forwards and we didn’t start until the second half. I had to give the team a bit of a rocket at half time. I told them to get their foot on the ball and take that extra pass which we didn’t do in the first half. “I think we were maybe a little bit complacent. But all round we didn’t start well. The energy levels were quite down from what I’m used to and that’s going to happen. It was hot and we had a mammoth game the previous Tuesday (1-0 win at Morecambe).” Pierre’s goal was his second in successive games after his winner against The Shrimps and he is clearly someone Reds’ defenders will have to be aware of today. Ainsworth added: “Aaron Pierre is doing really well at the moment. He had two men on him for every set play and was being really hounded out but right at the end he managed to wriggle himself free. It was a great ball in from Michael Harriman and it was a fantastic finish to a good second half and it might end up to be a very good point.”

S wycombe’ STAR GRADUATE

DWARDS BY LEIGH E

Football historian Leigh Edwards profiles Steve Guppy, one of Wycombe Wanderers’ finest-ever players. Born in Winchester, Steve moved to Wycombe in September 1989 and made his debut in that month’s 0-0 Conference draw at Welling United. Guppy featured in Wycombe’s 1991 FA Trophy final success then scored in their 1992 Bob Lord Trophy final triumph. He starred as Martin O’Neill’s side achieved the Conference and FA Trophy in 1993. He was voted Conference Player of the Year and gained England SemiPro international recognition against Wales. He created history by scoring Wycombe’s first League goal in their 2-2 draw at Carlisle United in August 1993.

August 1994 but failed to make an impact and joined Port Vale for £225,000 three months later. His fourth trip to Wembley brought him a runners-up medal in the 1996 Anglo-Italian Cup final and his impressive displays for Vale led to a reunion with Martin O’Neill at Leicester City for a fee rising to £950,000 in February 1997. He quickly became one of the Premier League’s most-effective leftsided operators. Guppy appeared for England B against Chile in February 1998 and as an over-age choice for England Under-21s against Switzerland the following month. An important figure as Leicester reached the League Cup final in

He missed just one game as the Chairboys won promotion via the Third Division playoffs in 1994 and then moved to Newcastle United for £150,000 in

1999, his former boss Kevin Keegan gave Steve his full England debut in a 2-1 victory over Belgium in October 1999. That made him only the second player, after Alan Smith, to complete the rise from England semi-pro to full international. Steve linked up with Martin O’Neill again at Celtic for £350,000 in August 2001 and featured in their 2001-02 Scottish Premier League title triumph. He returned to Leicester in 2004 and then had spells at Leeds United and Stoke City before going back to Wycombe in November 2004. He scored 26 times in 192 Conference and League games for the Chairboys. www.crawleytownfc.com

the club’s survival and Ainsworth signed him permanently in May 2015 after Pierre declined the option of a new contract with Brentford, for whom he’d made a handful of senior appearances after joining their development squad in 2011 from Fulham.

Wycombe defender Aaron Pierre is proving to be a success at both ends of the pitch as the Chairboys enjoy an excellent start to the season.

Injuries have hit Wycombe hard already this season and Pierre, a commanding physical presence in defence, has already had three different central defensive partners.

The 22-year-old Londoner was on target in the 1-0 win at Morecambe 12 days ago and scored again last Saturday deep into stoppage time to rescue a point against Dagenham & Redbridge and preserve Wycombe’s unbeaten record. Pierre’s brilliant celebrations with a ball boy became a massive YouTube hit and offered another demonstration of the togetherness fostered by boss Gareth Ainsworth which carried Wycombe to May’s playoff final just a year after they had won on the last day of the season to preserve League status.

“But it actually works out better for us as a group because it means that we’re all going to get game time, we’re all going to grow and all going to know what’s expected of us as a team. It worked out for us last season and there’s no reason why it won’t be the same this time round. I’ve seen a couple of teams that have seen what we have done and want to do the same. They want a small squad and to be more of a unit like we are. When injuries kick in, it’s the strong minded players and the unity of the squad that will make sure we stay strong and compete all the way to the end.”

A bit like ourselves, Wycombe operate with a small squad and although injuries can stretch resources sometimes Pierre can also see the benefits. “With all of the injuries, it’s the exact same as last season,” he said. “There were times when we couldn’t even fill the bench. For one game we only had three players on the bench, and the gaffer was one of them.”

Pierre joined Wycombe in February 2014, initially on loan, from Brentford. He played his part in

1957 - AMATEUR CUP FINALISTS Wycombe played at Wembley Stadium for the first time when they faced holders Bishop Auckland in the Amateur Cup final on 13th April 1957. Inspired by Bob Hardisty, Bishops took the lead on 13 minutes when Russell tricked Michael Wicks and beat Dennis Syrett with a low shot. Wycombe gradually got back into the game and Jim Truett had a header well saved. The Chairboys equalised in the 38th minute when Frank Smith scored with a fierce shot but Bishops regained the lead within two minutes through Derek Lewin. Wycombe went close to levelling before Warren Bradley scored on 71 minutes to seal Bishops’ 3-1 victory. 1975 - FA CUP GIANTKILLERS Isthmian League giantkillers Wycombe Wanderers faced First Division leaders Middlesbrough in the FA Cup third round on 4th January 1975. The Chairboys had beaten Cheltenham Town and AFC Bournemouth to reach that stage of the competition for the first www.crawleytownfc.com

time. Wycombe dominated much of the game watched by a capacity crowd of 12,000 at Loakes Park, with Steve Perrin, Paul Birdseye and Alan Phillips all going close to scoring in a 0-0 draw. In the replay, three days later, John Maskell made several brilliant saves as Middlesbrough piled on the pressure. David Armstrong netted for Boro with just seconds remaining to secure a narrow 1-0 victory. 1993 - WYCOMBE AT THE DOUBLE Wycombe Wanderers completed a Conference title and FA Trophy ‘double’ on 9th May 1993, having won the Trophy two years earlier as well. The Chairboys had secured the Conference title and Football League status with Steve Thompson’s goal in a 1-0 victory at Gateshead on 18th April 1993. Martin O’Neill’s side faced Runcorn in the FA Trophy final watched by 32,968 at Wembley Stadium. Wycombe took the lead through Jason Cousins’ free-kick after just three minutes and doubled their advantage on 21 minutes when Andy

Kerr headed in Dave Carroll’s cross. Steve Shaughnessy reduced the deficit on 42 minutes but second-half goals by Thompson and Carroll gave Wycombe a 4-1 win. 1994 - WEMBLEY WINNERS Wycombe Wanderers defeated Preston North End 4-2 in the Third Division play-off final watched by 40,109 at Wembley Stadium on 28th May 1994. Simon Garner levelled in the 47th minute and Dave Carroll slotted home Garner’s pass to give Wycombe the lead on 56 minutes. Glyn Creaser headed against the bar before Carroll sealed their 4-2 win and promotion at the first attempt with a fine goal in the 70th minute. 2001 - FA CUP SEMIFINALISTS

A club record six successive wins took the Chairboys to the top of League One by mid-September and they remained in the promotion race until failing to win any of their final 11 matches. Never previously beyond the League Cup second round, they beat Swansea City, top-flight Fulham, Doncaster Rovers, Notts County and Charlton Athletic en route to the semi-finals. Jermaine Easter’s equaliser gave Wycombe a 1-1 first-leg draw against Chelsea at Adams Park on 10th January 2007 but they lost 4-0 to the eventual winners in the secondleg.

3-1 League Two victory at home to Southend United on 7th May 2011. Gary Waddock’s newlyrelegated side lost just two of their opening 16 games, including seven draws, then moved up to second place with seven wins in eight matches. The Chairboys briefly slipped out of the automatic promotion places with three successive defeats during February, but a ten-match unbeaten end to the season enabled them to finish third and regain League One status at the first attempt. With a game today against what I still like to think of as a “proper” ex non-league club, it will be nice to not be constantly reminded by the arrogant away fans of a “big” club (oh, wait a minute, Pompey are in our league!) just how much bigger and better than us they are.

Lowestoft away – exotic!

20

Reds’ fan Mick Fox will be reminiscing about past meetings against some of our opponents and famous games in our history throughout the season in this new feature.

I can’t help thinking that some fans simply like to go with the herd and are not brave enough to support a smaller club and risk some abuse from the so-called supporters (often armchair fans) of a big side. It is almost as if some think that the bigger the club they support then the “better” supporter they are. Anyway, enough of my anti “big club” rant and welcome to Wycombe Wanderers, a team who - when we last played them in the FA Trophy in January 1986 – were one of the biggest nonleague teams in the country. Mind you, it wouldn’t have mattered who they were as our abysmal FA Trophy record meant we could usually find a way to lose to whoever we came www.crawleytownfc.com

started on a series of mergers which now has them, I suppose, as a small part of the DNA of Dagenham and Redbridge. Walthamstow

merged with Leytonstone & Ilford, themselves a merger, then this became Redbridge Forest and they eventually merged with Dagenham

up against. Having said that, when we played Wycombe we had just managed two of our best ever Trophy results, having won 3-0 at (a very good) Farnborough in the third qualifying and then on 21st December 1985 at Town Meadow, beat Worcester 5-2 (attendance 756) in one of my favourite old-fashioned cup tie wins with goals from Giles Stille, Jeff Wood, Keith Browning and Terry Robbins (two).

to become Dagenham and Redbridge! I also remember a classic away day to Cheltenham in 1988 when we again had battled our way to round two of the Trophy (well, two victories anyway against Hampton 2-1 and Farnborough 2-0, both away). I seem to remember several of our coaches attending, including our very posh coach which had a bar, sofas and two toilets (of which I spent quite some time in on the return journey). (continued on page 22)

While sorting through my cuttings for more of our glorious FA Trophy past, it brought back a few memories, not necessarily of the games themselves (all I seem to remember of our Wycombe match is Steve Breach scoring a cracking own goal, or is my memory playing tricks?) I recall a visit in 1983 to watch Crawley play the famous old amateur club Walthamstow Avenue and marvelling at pictures of their illustrious past in their antiquated clubhouse at Green Pond Road.

The Argus’ photograph of the Bath game Of the game there is not much to say as we lost 2-0, but the team had great support and we were still in good spirits in the bar after the game until a very well dressed Cheltenham “fan” took exception to our being cheerful in defeat and threw a chair at us. So it was back on the coach to resume festivities, hence my prolonged toilet break (just ask Martin Hemington, another of our older fans). The season before Cheltenham in 1986 we had an attractive home tie in the first round against Conference side Bath City, which resulted in another narrow loss, 2-1. But this owed as much to our notorious Town Meadow swamp as to Bath, who scored the winner in the last minute when keeper Gary Moseley came to retrieve a long www.crawleytownfc.com

clearance but the ball stuck on the mud and he was stranded as Bodin scored, ending our hopes for another season. The pitch, as many will remember, was always “difficult” in the rainy season (September to April) and even though it had been dry and sunny for two days it had only just passed an earlymorning inspection. One final memory, backed up by a small press cutting, was the first season of the FA Trophy in 1969 when we had just been promoted to the Southern League Premier Division for the first time (and on a shoestring budget) We were drawn at home to Lowestoft of the Eastern Counties League, which at the time sounded very exotic and a long way away. We were expected to win easily, but as a sign of struggles to come we made hard

work of it and only just managed a 2-2 draw at home, though won the replay 3-1 (a long midweek trip I couldn’t make thanks to starting my first job). Normal service was to resume in the second qualifier, though, as after a decent 0-0 draw at Ramsgate we lost the replay 3-1 at home. From then (1969-70) it took until 1982-83 before we even reached the third qualifying round and then we ruined that by losing 6-1 at home to Croydon in a shocker! I hope this isn’t too depressing, but gives some of the old farts a few memory joggers, along with such FA Trophy games at Hayes in 1975 (lost 3-0, took my dog to be put down that morning – it’s how I remember the game and score!), Finchley away in 1978 (Maggie Thatcher paid a visit to the game at halftime) and finally when we reached Wembley in 1986. Unfortunately this was the team of that name and not the stadium, and we lost at home after an away draw, so nothing much different there.

Roarie Deacon

interview

I'm feeling positive for the season ahead and I think we are stronger this year. What's the feeling amongst the players?

Everyone is focused on what we need to do. There are no egos or bad apples and the new signings are all getting on well with the players from last year. I think the players who are here from last year are eager to repair the damage done and the new hopefully know I canfor players are hungry kick on.” a successful season. Roarie didn’t take long to make a favourable impression on Reds’ fans after scoring less than 20 seconds into his debut against Burgess Hill in our opening friendly, when he was still on trial.

It was perhaps not a surprise to see Roarie Deacon look towards the heavens as he celebrated his second goal in last Saturday’s 3-0 win over Cambridge United. The striker admitted to a feeling of relief after he scored his first goals for the club in our eye-catching win at the Abbey Stadium and one he hopes signals the start of a long run in the side and plenty more goals for his new club.

More good pre-season performances earned him a one-year deal at the end of last month and the former Arsenal and Sunderland youngster is settling down nicely at his new club.

“I’m delighted and relieved,” said the 23-year-old Londoner, who joined Reds in the summer after he was released by Stevenage at the end of last season.

“We’ve got a good group of lads here, there is a real togetherness and I think we’ve shown that in every game so far,” he said. “We have all played our part because it’s a small squad but when you get an opportunity you have to take it.”

“Mark Yates signed me because he thinks I can score goals and I have the same belief in myself. But when you don’t get a goal there is some pressure so to get two in one game is great for me and

Roarie had already rattled the Cambridge bar when he scored his first goal last Saturday,

albeit with the aid of a deflection off defender Mark Roberts, after Lewis Young’s pass found him in space. Then early in the second half he latched onto Matt Harrold’s flick-on to ghost past Roberts and score with an angled drive which went in off the far post. “With the first I got a bit lucky but the manager keeps encouraging us to shoot from outside the box. I was pleased with the second. You know with Matty that he is going to win a lot of balls in the air so it was a case of reading the flick-on and getting a good strike off, which I did. It was a hard game but a really good team performance. We said afterwards that we set the standard there for the rest of the season. That is how we’ve got to think starting today against Wycombe.”

THE BIG INTERVIEW

Jon Ashton

There’s a young look to Reds’ defence this season. Last Saturday’s team included two 18-year-olds and a 19-year-old, but there is always room for an older head like Jon Ashton

“I learned a lot of things at the start of my career which have stood me in good stead in the last few years”

Interview: Joe Reid

Jon joined the club in the summer from Stevenage and has quickly settled down to life at his new club and formed effective partnerships already in the centre of defence with both Joe McNerney and captain Sonny Bradley. “I’ve loved it so far,” he said. “I knew a few of the boys before I signed, so there were familiar faces and they’ve all been great. I’ve really enjoyed the first few months and hope it continues. Jon began his career in the youth team at Leicester City, having been born in nearby Nuneaton, and he spent seven years with the Foxes. He graduated to the senior squad and made a total of 10 appearances for Leicester, including a debut in the Premier League against Leeds United in March 2002 aged 18, before loan moves to Notts County and Oxford www.crawleytownfc.com

United helped him gain further experience. “I’m not going to say it was daunting, but it was certainly a big thing making your Premier League debut at 18,” he remembers. “I wouldn’t change the way it happened because I just loved it and obviously it was a big step down to League Two when I went out on loan, but I’ve learned a lot of things back then that have stood me in good stead throughout my career.” A permanent move to Oxford United came in 2003 when his team-mates included goalkeeper Andy Woodman. Even Jon laughed when Freddie Woodman turned up to join the Reds on loan last month and he realised he was going to play with the son of one of his old colleagues! (continued)

www.crawleytownfc.com

31

32

Jon went on to make a further 96 appearances for Oxford. Ashton was released and dropped into the Conference, first with Rushden & Diamonds, for whom he played 45 times, and then Grays Athletic, the club where Reds’ striker Charlie Ademeno once scored a hat-trick in the space of four minutes. He impressed in his time with the Essex club, winning their Players’ Player of the Year and Supporters’ Player awards in 2008. His form earned him a move to Stevenage and it was there that Jon enjoyed arguably the best period of his career to date,

making 192 appearances and taking the club from Conference Premier through to League One with successive promotions.

with more than 300 career appearances under his belt. “Even at this level every squad needs some experienced heads because it’s easy to get caught up in the glitz and glamour of being a professional footballer. My advice to any young player is simple concentrate on football. I want to help the younger lads in our team and I like to think they can come to me if they need advice. I want to be the kind of professional that other players can learn from.”

He wasn’t involved in last season’s League Two play-offs, which ended with defeat for Stevenage to Southend, because of injury, but his profile and experience at League 2 level was a big factor in Mark Yates’ decision to sign him and utilise his experience to help the younger members of the squad. But he looks back fondly on his time at Stevenage.

Mark might be calling on Jon’s services off the pitch as the season unfolds. Jon is a fully qualified Pilates instructor and believes regular Pilates has helped prolong his career as they help recovery from the wear on tear on the body that every professional suffers from.

“It’s definitely a highlight of my career,” he added. “I won a couple of things with Stevenage and had a good relationship with the fans. I’m looking forward to going back there

“I was advised to take it up after a few injuries and I haven’t looked back,” he said. “It’s been hugely beneficial for me in terms of recovery and prevention of injuries, so I decided to take the qualification a year ago and went from there. I’m looking forward to working with a few of the boys and seeing if it will help them.” Before the players get the exercise mats out there is another game to be won today when Reds face a stern test against last season’s play-off finalists Wycombe Wanderers. But Jon and the lads will approach it full of confidence after last Saturday’s 3-0 win over Cambridge United. next February, but my time there now is over and I’m focused on getting promotion with Crawley. I think we’ve got the quality within this side to do that. It’s no secret we’ve got a small squad, but if we keep everyone fit and perform to the best of our abilities then I’ve no doubt it can happen.”

“We said afterwards that we set a high standard against Cambridge which we should be looking to maintain week in, week out. In the other games we reached those levels in spells but that was perhaps our first 90-minute performance. Having gone in front at half-time the manager stressed that we couldn’t ease up in the second half and we didn’t. That has to be our benchmark for the rest of the season, starting today against Wycombe which will be another tough game.”

And he is more than happy to play the role of wise head in the dressing room, having been appointed club captain by the Gaffer just before the start of the season and www.crawleytownfc.com

James Charlton

Are you looking forward to getting some Football League experience under your belt?

Dan Ward

What are your main targets during your time with Crawley Town?

Most definitely, it is going to be a great experience for me and one that will help me gain a better understanding of the game.

I would like to firstly try and start as many games as possible and contribute to helping the team keep clean sheets, which is something that is important to me as a defender.

Tim Westcott

You’ve played your first game already. How big is the step-up from youth to senior football? I believe my youth development has stood me in good stead for the step up but the intensity is always there in senior football, also the physicality of senior football is more demanding.

crawleytown

crawleytown

How did you find your debut against Cambridge United? I enjoyed every minute of the game and to win 3-0 and keep a clean sheet was a great start to my time at the club and something I want to build on.

Matt Humphreys

Have you always wanted to play left-back? If not, where were you playing before? When I was young boy I wanted to be a striker as everyone wants to score goals and take the glory!

Rieuan Higgins

Who do you speak to during training and get along with? The boys have welcomed me into the squad and I felt like I've settled in well, so I chat to most of the boys at training.

Mark Yates set up the team to contain Pompey and apart from two chances for ex-Crawley striker Matt Tubbs, one of which he stuck wide and the second was ruled out for offside, the home side kept the visitors at bay. MEMORY MATCHES

RNETT BY JOHN BA

Although this is only the second competitive meeting between ourselves and Wycombe, and the first in the Football League, several players have appeared for both clubs, some during the Reds’ successful period of recent years. An early link was a player who made the move directly from us to Wycombe back in 1999. Richard Thompson made seven appearances during the early part of that year without pulling up too many trees at a time when plenty of Football League scouts were watching striker Ben Abbey. But Wycombe had clearly seen something in Thompson as they signed him and he would make six appearances in the league for them. One of the first players to make the move the other way – via other clubs - was Mo Harkin, who made his debut for the Chairboys aged just 17. Mo joined the Reds in June 2002 and was part of a classy looking midfield in a team that should have achieved more that season. Individually, Harkin became a real favourite with his www.crawleytownfc.com

trickery on the right wing. His second season saw him star in our Dr Martens League Premier Division winning team and he was then a part of our first ever campaign in the Conference. That league-winning squad of 2003-04 included two loanees from today’s visitors. Reds fans never saw Jonny Dixon hit the heights that he later achieve at Aldershot, but Gavin Holligan

would go down in folklore. He scored a key goal on debut at Havant & Waterlooville but that was just a warm-up for an almost identical header seven days later that settled the table-topping clash at Weymouth in a pivotal moment in the title race. There were two more goals as well, in the victory over Grantham later in January 2004. Ahead of that maiden season in the Conference National, the ranks were strengthened with a double signing from Adams Park. Ian Simpemba was made club captain and, living locally at the time, he settled in immediately and became a highly popular figure who would stay until March 2006. The other new face was midfielder Charlie Mapes, who would go down in history as the first Crawley player to score a Conference goal at the Broadfield Stadium when he netted a late equaliser from a free-kick against Hereford United in our first home match. The 2006-07 season was played against the backdrop of

seasons for Wycombe too.

administration, a points deduction and all sorts of off-field turmoil but we did pull in some decent young players, including Scott Rendell on loan from Reading. He netted 11 times, including some crucial pointsearning strikes, as we stayed up on the final day. A move to Wycombe in June 2010 proved successful as he scored 19 goals as they earned promotion into League One. Now at Woking, no doubt both sets of supporters wish him a successful and speedy recovery from the knee injury that has already ruled him out for the season.

The last two players are probably two of the most popular Reds players of the current era. Dannie Bulman was part of the Wycombe side that reached the FA Cup semi-final in 2001, during a six-year spell with the club. He joined Crawley during the 2006-07 season and would go on to make over 250 appearances either side of a year with Oxford United in 2009-10. Bully’s effort, commitment and all round energy made him a huge favourite with both sets of fans.

One of Steve Evans’ early signings in the summer of 2007 was forward Jon-Paul Pittman, who enjoyed a good 18 months with us before a loan spell turned into a permanent move to the Chairboys where he had enjoyed an earlier promotion to League One. He returned to Crawley on loan in November 2011 and would have a second spell at Wycombe in 2013-14.

Scott Davies loaned from parent club Reading, and joined Reds permanently after his release from the Royals in June 2011. An undoubtedly talented midfield player he never fully established himself, although he did score a crucial winning goal at Barnet and one of the strikes of the season at Torquay four years ago this weekend as we made it back-to-back promotions.

Two signings ahead of our first season in the Football League (2011-12) had loan spells with Wanderers at the same time during 2009 and 2010. John Akinde enjoyed a decent goalscoring run from March 2009, but despite plenty of promise – and support from the Reds fans – he was unable to repeat that form with us. Scott Davies was twice

So did Sergio Torres, who made his mark in the League with Wycombe before enjoying cult status with Reds after his winning goal in the FA Cup third round against Derby in January 2011. Wycombe had given him his chance in the professional ranks back in 2005 and for that both sets of fans should be grateful.

Our current squad includes Matt Harrold, who played for the visitors from 200810 while Dean Morgan featured in the second half of last season, having previously enjoyed a couple of

Redson the road

58

Reds’ fan Craig Bratt continues his series looking at life on the road with Reds As Reds’ stepped out onto the Abbey Stadium pitch last weekend there was renewed optimism amongst the fans, buoyed by a gallant performance at home to Portsmouth and, indeed, the first half display against AFC Wimbledon. It was our first trip to Cambridge since a 2-2 draw in our Conference winning season, and it looked to be a tough game against a side that were unbeaten in the league and had assembled an ambitious squad for their League Two campaign including former Red Keith Keane. Upon arrival at Cambridge, we encountered a friendly supporters bar and volunteers clad in jackets saying ‘here to help’ and handing out sweets to the youngsters. The bar had a mix of home and away fans and large TV screens showing the early Premier League kick off. It was a scorching day in East Anglia and the day had a ‘first game www.crawleytownfc.com

of the season’ feel about it. After a few drinks in the bar I headed towards the away end. It is quite possibly one of the most unconventional entrances to a stadium I’ve experienced, second to Luton’s ‘back garden of a house’ entrance. You go away from the ground into a cow field (no cows thankfully!) and finally go over a small bridge and into the turnstiles. 173 Reds fans were housed in the North Stand, a large raised structure behind one goal. This was segregated between home and away fans. Behind the other goal is a terrace which houses home fans, however it only stretches for threequarters of the width of the pitch. The remainder is used for disabled supporters. On one side is another terrace, which can be split between home and away fans, but again this was not in use. The main stand is an older structure with supporting pillars and benches for seats. For a lover of older grounds like me it was beautiful! This housed the tunnel, dugouts and directors’ box. The game started brightly for the Reds,

box office who were yet to win this season, and on 39 minutes the pressure was rewarded as Roarie Deacon’s deflected effort gave Town the lead. The second half was possibly one of the best team performances I’ve seen in recent seasons. Deacon grabbed a superb second before Gwion Edwards scored his third in as many games to round off a stunning victory for the Red Army. Now, without getting carried away, when was the last time Crawley won 3-0 away from home I hear you ask? It was Tamworth in 2011. We all know what happened there! Today sees our first ever league meeting with Wycombe, who are keen to maintain their unbeaten start to the season. Your support last Saturday was outstanding and more of the same is needed this afternoon, so get behind the lads more than ever.

We’re Red and Black with Yates and Dack!

Great Away Days We have now had our first two League trips away from home and we’ve experienced great performances against teams who it’s believed will be challenging at the top of League Two this season. Oxford was the destination for our first trip and a full CTSA coach descended upon the Kassam Stadium, full of anticipation for our first game back in League Two. A very positive start was made and we came away with a good away point. Next up was Cambridge United on the 22nd August and what a day that was. A fantastic performance by every single player on the pitch, three goals and a clean sheet to take all three points. An www.crawleytownfc.com

away day most fans will never forget. Nobody expected anything like that before we left! If you haven’t been to an away game before or think you might like to go we always welcome new travellers as well as existing fans who haven’t been for a while. We can’t promise you another day like Cambridge but we will do our best to ensure you have a good day out.

Our next trip is to Mansfield Town on the 12th September. • Adult members £22.50 • Under-16s £17.50 • Coach leaves the Checkatrade.com Stadium at 08.45am • Call or text Tracey on 07843 124845 to book • Email Sarah/Tracey at travel@ctfcsa.co.uk • See Sophie in the office at the club.

2015-16 Membership If you travel with us, membership of the CTSA will, as well as providing other benefits this season, entitle you to reduced travel prices. Adult membership is £10 with Under-16s paying £5 and Concessions (Over-65s) £8. A family membership (2 adults and 2 children) is £20. UP Next Saturday, September 12

Mansfield Town With next Saturday’s trip to Notts County postponed Reds have a fortnight before their next League Two engagement and a first ever Football League clash with Mansfield Town at One Call Stadium (or Field Mill if you prefer). Adam Murray, the Stags’ boss, is the youngest manager in the Football League at 33, having been appointed last December following a spell in caretaker charge. After a decent preseason when they only lost once and held Leicester City to a draw, Mansfield have had a mixed start to their third season back in the League, having come up in 2013 – when they also played Liverpool in the FA Cup – as Conference champions. They started with a 1-1 draw against Carlisle and bounced back three days after a 4-1 thumping at Sheffield Wednesday in the Capital One Cup to beat local rivals www.crawleytownfc.com

Notts County 2-0 at Meadow Lane when 2,767 Stags’ fans in a crowd of over 10,000 saw Chris Clements and Ryan Tafazolli seal victory with goals in the second half. The Stags were brought back down to earth 12 days ago when they lost to the only goal at Accrington Stanley before drawing 1-1 at home last Saturday against Oxford United. Those two games saw Mansfield pick up 13 yellow cards and Murray was quick to act. He said: “We had a referee in from the Referee’s Association on Wednesday to have a chat with the lads as we are so young and energetic and we want to put this kind of fire onto everybody, we are reacting at times, myself included, at 100

miles an hour and I think we can calm that down a little bit. It’s not as if there are two-footed challenges everywhere. What Oxford did last Saturday, and fair play it’s part of the game, is that they managed the ref well on Saturday.”

There are some familiar faces in the Stags’ line-up. Brian Jensen became their oldest outfield player when he faced Notts although another ex-Red, Scott Shearer, is their No.1 goalkeeper. Striker Matt Green is their main goal threat, having re-joined the club in the summer after two injuryplagued seasons with Birmingham City.
