all the talk from the fleetwood town boardroom with andy pilley

the chairman Good afternoon and welcome back to Highbury to this afternoon’s FA Cup 2nd Round tie against Burton Albion. I’d particularly like to welcome our visitors today and trust they had a safe journey here on what is their third visit to Fleetwood this calendar year.

T

he FA Cup provides a different challenge to the bread and butter of league football as whilst neither of today’s teams probably have any realistic expectations of winning the cup, the potential always exists for a small club like ourselves to earn a “glamour tie” against one of the Premier League big boys. To earn that possibility, we need to get past the 2nd Round but we couldn’t have a more difficult task particularly as Burton have won both previous league games here this year so far. Like us, they are also flying high in League 2 currently and having won their last three league games (not to mention 8 of their last 11 in all competitions), they are also the division’s form team. We come into the game with something of a mixed performance against Oxford United last Saturday. We played really well in the first half I thought and deservedly took the lead from an excellent Stephen Schumacher free kick. We then created a good opportunity to extend our lead before the break and had we taken it, I’m sure we would have gone on to win the

game. The second half was a different story however as Oxford put us under tremendous pressure and whilst we rode our luck at times, when Scott Davies pulled off a tremendous save from a rather harshly awarded penalty with just 10 minutes to go, I thought we were going to see the game out and hold onto our slender lead. To concede such a late equaliser therefore was a bitter pill to swallow though in all honesty, over the full 90 minutes, we probably didn’t do enough to deserve all 3 points. That result, only our second draw of the season, saw us drop down the league table into 7th place, though we sit just two points behind Oxford who still head the table. It’s so tight at the top that had we held onto our lead and won last Saturday’s game we would have gone top! Our league campaign is on the back burner for now though and after today’s FA Cup game, we remain in cup mode in the Johnstone’s Paint

sponsored by

Trophy this coming Tuesday when we welcome League 1 Rotherham United to Highbury for our Northern Area semi final tie. Rotherham are having a tremendous season so we will be the undoubted underdogs on the night though having already beaten three League 1 sides in the JPT so far this season, we will go into the game with plenty of confidence. We then return to league action next Saturday when we make the relatively short trip to Rochdale before returning home with a game two week today against Cheltenham Town.

Enjoy today’s game and your entire Highbury FA Cup match day experience.

The Official Programme of fleetwood Town Football Club Season 2013/14

The thoughts of the cod army Manager, graham alexander

the manager Welcome to this afternoon’s FA Cup tie at Highbury Stadium. Burton Albion are our visitors for the second time this season and we hope to put the first result to bed this afternoon.

B

oth sides overcame nonleague opposition in the first round and like us, Burton, will be looking to have their name in the third round hat tomorrow. A potential big prize is on offer and I’m sure we are going to see a well fought cup tie today. League form does, to an extent, take a back seat when it comes to the Cup football but we will go into the game with our usual desire to win.

Highbury is a great place on matchday and your support is going to be essential when our busy, Festive campaign starts.

Finally, I’d like to welcome Gary Rowett, his staff and players.

Last Saturday’s draw against the league leaders left us with mixed feelings. We played very well in the first half and deservedly took our lead into half time. The second half saw us determined to keep that lead but we just lost our balance between defending well while keeping our attacking threat. We were all disappointed not to win but encouraged by how hard we made it for the visitors. Today’s FA Cup game is our first away from our regular league schedule. Tuesday sees us defend our good run in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy and test ourselves against League 1 opposition again when Rotherham United visit Highbury. I hope as many of you can join us next week to build on our encouraging home atmosphere. Hearing the Parkside Stand join the Memorial Stand in good voice last weekend was great to hear. It’s also good to see many of our junior players inside Highbury along with our under 16 members.

the skipper

SKIPPER’S LOG

Skipper Mark Roberts looks forward to the FA Cup tie with Burton and reflects on the league form in the last 7 days

T

oday we take on Burton Albion here at Highbury for the second time this season but this time around it’s the FA Cup and a place in the third round at stake. We lost to today’s opponents early on in our campaign in what really was a game of two halves. Having found ourselves 3-0 down at the break we responded magnificently in the second half and should have probably forced an equaliser. This afternoon we must be right at it from the very first whistle and be ready to win both halves of football. Last week we came agonisingly close to three valuable points against Oxford. As you would expect the lads were gutted in the dressing room after the game but as the gaffer was quick to point out, we have to take the positives from a battling display.

season so it is a fantastic game we will all look forward to. Back to today and the challenge ahead will not be an easy one but we are determined to be the team that is in the hat for tomorrows draw. The chance to tackle one of the Premiership giants is not one that comes around too often so get behind the lads and help us get there.

Enjoy the game

Robbo

Oxford are the current league leaders for a reason and for the most part we handled everything they threw at us, putting bodies on the line and fighting for the cause. That spirit and determination will see us in good stead in the games ahead as sometimes you simply have to roll up your sleeves and dig deep for one another. In midweek we host Rotherham United in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Northern Semi-Final with the opportunity to take another step closer to Wembley. We have beaten higher league opposition in that competition already this

evening gazette Here we go with an afternoon of FA Cup action at Highbury.

I

t’s difficult to forget what happened last time the famous old trophy was contested in this parish - a shock exit for the club and even more shocking departure for manager Micky Mellon. It was a tough weekend not only for those of us reporting the events but for those at the club rushing to pick up the pieces in the wake of those dramatic few hours. Just a few days later Graham Alexander arrived to take over at the helm and the manager, this afternoon, will celebrate a year in charge at Fleetwood Town. On the surface it may appear little has changed. But those of us who work closely with the club will have seen the marked transformation behind the scenes Graham’s tenure has brought. He’s had to make some brave decisions along the way releasing skipper and fans’ favourite Steve McNulty which preceded the huge shake up over the summer which saw a number of big names leave the club.

with rob stocks

Town are in a better position to push for promotion now than they were at the same point last season. The squad is packed with players experienced at this level and above. There’s young talent as well with Antoni Sarcevic currently one of the division’s hot properties. Not that the past has been entirely forgotten. Nathan Pond’s performances this season have been superb and in his testimonial year Pondy has well deserved his role as an everpresent in Town’s back line. It’s easy, looking at the league table, to say little progress has been made. But that doesn’t tell the whole story. I don’t think this side, yet, have come anywhere close to fulfilling their potential. We’ve seen, in spells, what they are capable of - some fine attacking football.

Steven Schumacher made the point to me last weekend that this team is still fairly new - having played little more than 20 games together. I guess he’s saying all the pieces of the jigsaw are here but they’ve not yet all slotted into place. Let’s hope it all does today, not only because there’s a spot in the lucrative third round at stake but because it’s high time Fleetwood banished the Burton bogie. They’ve scored eight goals in two games here at Highbury and Fleetwood will have to be much improved over their last Brewers encounter if they are to progress. The key is not to dwell on those defeats but to concentrate on the kind of football which has seen the club march onwards in another knockout competition this term. The third round draw is one of the most exciting moments in the footballing calendar today’s mission is to make sure Fleetwood, this season, are in it.

It hasn’t, yet, all come together for a sustained push.

Those squad changes are what most people see but there’s plenty else going on, not least the increased emphasis on fitness, under the guidance of Youl Mawene and the introduction of video analysis to aid the players and staff. I’ve no doubt, despite the rollercoaster start, Fleetwood

community trust School Assemblies

D

uring this season the Community Trust has been delivering school assemblies in primary schools across the Fylde Coast. With the help of club mascot Captain Cod, we have been into 6 primary schools so far with another half a dozen booked in for the New Year. Our interactive assemblies involve the children taking penalties at Captain Cod and asking them questions surrounding football and Fleetwood Town. The kids seem to be really attentive and enjoy the short time we have with them. We also reward the school with tickets for a future home game at Fleetwood Town Football Club as part of growing the younger fan base. This last two weeks we have been at Carters Charity in Preesall, and The Copps Primary School in Great Eccleston. The reason for going in both these schools was to celebrate their achievement of best attended primary schools in Wyre & Fylde. It’s really important for attendance to be rewarded, and as education is one of main focuses for the Trust it was a privilege for us to be part of it.

Rotherham United Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Round by Round Summary By Jamie Cleaver-Smith

Second Round: York City 0-3 Rotherham United

Quarter Final: Hartlepool United 1-2 Rotherham United

(08/10/2013)

(12/11/2013)

The Millers cruised into the quarter finals with a relatively straightforward victory away at York City.

Keiran Agard scored his 9th goal of the season to secure progression to the next round for The Millers.

An own goal from York’s Chris Smith gave the visitors the lead in the first half before Kieran Agard and Alex Revell secured the result with goals after the interval.

Tom Eaves, on loan from Championship side Bolton Wanderers, played up front in place of Alex Revell and repaid his manager’s faith in him.

Whilst United would have been labelled clear favourites going into this tie, manager Steve Evans rested a number of key players following a hard fought victory over Brentford. The Minstermen did have chances throughout the game but could not find a way past goalkeeper Michael Ingham. In the end, it was a comfortable victory for the Millers.

Eaves opened the scoring on 9 minutes as he got on the end of Michael Tidser’s corner, his header was simply unstoppable. Hartlepool responded well and were back level after 24 minutes as former Rotherham player Andy Monkhouse bagging the equalizer. The final goal of the half, and the game, came from Agard in rather fortunate fashion. Lee Frecklington struck a long range effort which inadvertently deflected off the ex Yeovil striker and the ball found the back of the net. That goal, which was scored in first half stoppage time, proved to be the winner and sent the Millers into the semi-final to take on the Cod Army.

pitch matters

sponsored by

Dale Frith Head Groundsman

Good afternoon and welcome to Highbury Stadium for today’s FA Cup 2nd Round fixture against Burton Albion. The match sees the Brewers return to Highbury after their 3-2 victory back in August. A poor 1st half saw us 3-0 down at half time before we brought the scoreline back to 3-2.

A

gain we have had a quick turnaround following last week’s game against Oxford United and we have also adapted our maintenance regime to help the pitch cope with the winter elements. As the temperatures are cooling down and the amount of daylight dwindles, we change certain factors such as height and frequency of cut. With the height of cut in the growing season we get the cut down to 23 mm but we raise the height up to 30 mm for the winter period. The reason we raise the height is to offer more protection to the grass to help cope with the wear and tear to which it is subjected. We are also adapting our aeration practices and I will aim to open up the top surface of the pitch with a shallow tine aerator. I will also monitor the surface to see if I need to use a penetrant wetting agent which reduces the chemical charge between water and the soil and allows the water through. Helping the water through the profile by both physical and chemical means can be an effective way of maintaining a stable surface which is better equipped to sustain grass coverage. To keep the grass healthy I make sure that it is as prepared as possible for the winter by reducing the amount of nitrogen in the fertiliser and increasing the levels of potassium. This

26

reduces soft top growth whilst strengthening the cells and increases rooting, a typical feed at the moment is 6-0-27. I have also applied a fungicide which will provide approximately 2 months protection from disease which is still a possibility given the mild temperatures and the

possible use of the frost sheets coming up.

Enjoy today’s action and hopefully lets cheer the lads into the 3rd round!

LOAN NEWS

Mani DIESERUVWE’s loan period at Highbury has been extended until 1st February 2014. The Sheffield Wednesday striker has made three substitute appearances for Town. The frontman made eight appearances during a loan spell at Conference Premier side Hyde.

Dale Eve at Highbury

“Everyone’s sound at Highbury. The lads are brilliant and like being part of the side. I’m enjoying myself to be fair. It will be good to get a bit longer on the pitch as it’s sometime difficult to make an impact with only a few minutes to go.”

Dale Eve has joined Fleetwood Town on loan from Premiership Stoke City. The 18-year-old will train under David Lucas but has not been allocated a squad number. Stoke signed Dale to on a two-year development contract in June 2011 and was followed by a two year professional contract in May 2012. The keeper has progressed through the youth teams of Bermuda and was called up to the senior squad in November 2011. He made his international debut in a 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification match against Barbados where he came on as a second half substitute in a 2–1 victory.

Tyson Moves Up the Fylde coast Tom Bestwick speaks to on loan Blackpool striker Nathan Tyson

It was hard to leave Reading. I got to a place where I couldn’t quite force my way into Alan Pardew’s team and at that time Wycombe was the best option for myself. I learnt a lot during my time there. Tony Adams was the manager there at the time when I first moved and it was a bit of a struggle, but then John Gorman came in and, for me, he is the best manager I have played under in my career. It was just a shame we couldn’t get promoted whilst I was there.

That success earned you your first big move when you joined Nottingham Forest in 2005. How did you find life at the City Ground? Nathan, your career started at your hometown club Reading. What was it like learning your trade in their academy?

It was hard at first, the dressing room was really fragile and there was a lot of stuff going on off the pitch. We were struggling in League 1 at the time as well and Gary Megson didn’t get much support. I suffered a really nasty

You had a number of different loan spells before eventually settling at Wycombe Wanderers. You had a very successful two years down there didn’t you? 34

The Official Programme of fleetwood Town Football Club Season 2013/14

And then you raised a few eyebrows by making the short move to their local-rivals Derby County. My last game for Forest was in the play-off semi-final against Swansea and after the game the Chief Executive came in, shook everyone’s hand and said “unlucky see you next season” but when he came to me he said “unlucky best of luck for the future.” I felt like I had been kicked in the teeth and when it came to it I wanted to stay in the area. I wanted to stay with my children so after a chat with Nigel Clough I knew it was the right thing to do, though, I did know it was going to raise a few eyebrows. Derby days for Tyson Action Images / Paul Currie Livepic

It was fantastic really, to learn at the team you supported growing up and representing the club and your friends, it was a massive honour. I learnt a hell of a lot and the three staff I was with during my time there all went on to manage in the Premier League. It was a great learning experience.

injury in my second season and suffered two medial ligament injuries in one season. I played under Billy Davies as well and everything started to pick up. He was fantastic, he’s a very, very good manager.

Highbury action for Tyson

Injury wise, you didn’t seem to have the best of luck during your first season at Pride Park. It must have been a hard time for yourself? It was certainly the most stressful part of my career. It just never happened for me, I had a groin injury and I had a knee injury still from my time with Forest and I just never recovered. It was a very difficult stage for me and I went under the knife a few times. I just wanted to impress and no one wants to be out injured. I felt embarrassed to be honest but I bounced back in the second season and scored a few goals, but unfortunately it didn’t work out in the end.

You left at the end of your second season and there seemed to be different things said over that summer regarding your situation. What was your view of your departure? I can’t go into it too much. I said my piece and I have no negative things to say about Nigel, I highly respect him and I would never go out to upset people. It was just the way I left, I found around May time that I was on the transfer list, but me and Nigel were very civil with each other and I just got on with it, put my head down and worked hard until I eventually got my move to Blackpool.

You got your move to Blackpool on deadline day, unfortunately you have yet to start a game, but do you put that down to their good start to the season? Yeah definitely. I spoke to Paul Ince and we had a long conversation and he said he felt sorry for me and that he just wants me to go out and play games. I came at a time when the club was at the top of the league and you can’t expect the manager to make changes to a winning side. At that time, it was decided I would go out and play some games and that’s when the offer from Fleetwood came in.

You haven’t played in League 2 for almost eight years, was it an easy choice to drop back down once Fleetwood had shown an interest in you? I just wanted to play football. I know Graham (Alexander) very well from playing against him and after speaking to him it was a very easy decision to come and join the club until January. I needed to improve my fitness, I needed to play games and Graham and Fleetwood gave me a great chance for me to do that.

It was certainly a pulsating first game for you to be involved in. I am sure you have not had many debuts like that? It was certainly very interesting! For me personally, it was important to play most of the game and afterwards I said “wow I am a bit off the pace.” Since I have been here though we have had a Tuesday game and then another Saturday game and already I am feeling one hundred times better than what I did when I first arrived.

It had been almost 11 months before your last first team start, do you see this as a chance to get your career back on track? Yeah I did, but saying that I want to do the best I can for Fleetwood Town as well. I know I have the ability to succeed having played in the Championship for a while now and I just needed the run of games to rediscover that. I am still here for another month yet so I want to play as many games as possible and help Fleetwood get as many points as possible.

You have played three games for the Cod Army now, how have you found your time at the club so far? I have really enjoyed it so far. When I first came, I probably put myself under too much pressure to score a goal, but I believe once the first one goes in I know they will start flying in. There is a good atmosphere here and I am enjoying being around the lads, mostly though, I am just enjoying my football again and playing games and I am looking forward to playing a lot more over the next month. Highbury action for Tyson

Just looking ahead to today’s game and Fleetwood have the chance of being in the draw for the third round of the FA Cup, is this competition still an important one for yourself? Unfortunately I won’t be able to play against Burton, but it is still a massive opportunity for clubs. I was with Millwall last season on loan and I watched Millwall go all the way to Wembley and to the semi-finals. It’s a fantastic competition and you can never write it off. It will certainly be funny if Fleetwood get through and play Blackpool in the next round again!

cod and roche

paul collier atches up with Asst Groundsman Ashley Roche about his role at Fleetwood Town FC

It seems ironic that a town with a rich fishing heritage like Fleetwood should have a member of staff with a fishy surname. Whilst the spelling of the freshwater species is not the same as the club’s youngest member of full time staff, it seems appropriate that the two should be linked. For 18 year old apprentice Ash, who was born in the town, his employment with the Cod Army is his first port of call.

T

he highly likeable and friendly local takes up the story “ I began at Fleetwood Town as a 13 year old glass collector and then got more involved by playing in the club’s under 14 side. I was invited down by the then manager James Scantlebury and enjoyed it for nearly two years but then I started having problems with my knees which really began to trouble me. ” Prior to working at Highbury Stadium, Ash had attended to watch games as he recalls “ I used to live just around the corner in Rutland Avenue and could always hear the crowd on match days which made me intrigued to find out what was going on. For this reason I started coming to the ground to see the matches here.” Having got a foot through the turnstile, the youngster became intrigued about the possibility of doing more work at the club. He remembers “ I spoke to the Head Groundsman, Dale Frith, on several occasions just to enquire if there might be any openings for me. He told me that the club might be looking to take on an apprentice due to needing an extra pair of hands. When he gave me this response, I was like a dog with a bone and wouldn’t let go. I even plucked up the courage to go and see the Chief Executive, Steve

36

Curwood, to plead my case for an apprenticeship. I have got to be honest and say that I went to see him several times and was probably a bit of a pest ! I think my persistence paid off though as in June last year I was asked to help with the laying of the artificial surround to the pitch. Within the last couple of days of doing this work Dale came to me and said the apprenticeship was available if I would like it. Naturally, I didn’t have to be asked twice and accepted straight away and my contract began the following month. In truth, I couldn’t believe that it had actually happened. ” Ash’s employ is linked to work which he has to undertake as part of an on going course in conjunction with Myerscough College near Bilsborrow. He explains “ A tutor from the college comes out to see me every six to eight weeks to make sure that I am keeping up with the work which I am set. Much of the work relates to what I do relating to issues of pitch maintenance. Health and safety matters are also included which are key when I am dealing with machinery. ” The amount of work which Ash along with his two colleagues, Dale and Nick, get through in preparation for a game is considerable. Ash remarks “ My working week begins on a

The Official Programme of fleetwood Town Football Club Season 2013/14

Monday. If we have played at home on the previous Saturday then I am involved in helping to repair the pitch. Slide tackle marks for example, can make a bit of a mess but the damage can be repaired with attention. I then use a rotary mower which cleans up the playing surface and takes any debris off .The following day the pitch will then have a single cut either way and on the Wednesday the same will happen again. Thursday and Friday will result in a double cut and we also try to mark out the pitch the day before the game. We do spend an awful lot of time and care in keeping the playing surface in the best possible condition. ” Ash’s apprenticeship is likely to be for 18 months although he is hoping to follow this with an advanced course lasting a further year. He remains under no illusions though of what is expected of him “ I do realise just how lucky I am to have this fabulous opportunity to work for my home town club. I have an awful lot to learn yet but I am determined to progress as this is what I want to do in life. ” To supplement his wage, Ash also works behind the bars in the stadium which also incorporates glass collecting and barrel changing. He comments “ I enjoy the complete contrast between the work I do in the pitch and

my other work off it. I have got to know a lot of the staff very well indeed and even though I am young I do get treated with respect which is nice. While we all operate as a team I also feel that I am part of a family. Clearly there are times when people need to be above others but we do all try and help each other when the situation requires it. ”

Finally, when the local lad is asked his thoughts about Chairman, Andy Pilley and what he has done for the town Ash responds instantly “ His input has been unbelievable for Fleetwood. When I was a small boy and walked past the ground there were no proper stands. The Chairman, has just transformed everything. Even after all our recent success, I find it incredible

just how far we have come. I truly never ever envisaged this. I was amazed when we reached the Blue Square North but I never ever imagined getting in to the Football League itself. It has just been the most incredible journey and one which I hope is far from finished yet. On a personal note, I am extremely determined to continue to play my part in what for me is a wonderful adventure.”

FLEETWOOD’S PAST OPPONENTS

MILNTHORPE CORINTHIANS

T

he name of Milnthorpe Corinthians Football Club will mean little to most people present this afternoon. The small town of Milnthorpe sits just north of the Lancashire border in south Cumbria on the main A6 road from Lancaster to Kendal and with a population of just 2,100, not surprisingly the town football club has played at a fairly low level in nonleague football throughout its long history. It may surprise you however to learn that Fleetwood have met the Corinthians on six occasions, all of which have been in the qualifying rounds of the FA Cup and we take a look today at those meetings. Meeting number one took place here at Highbury on 8th October 1955 in the FA Cup 2nd Qualifying round. A crowd of 1,451 saw a goalless draw and the replay took place at Milnthorpe’s Park Road ground the following Thursday afternoon. Fleetwood made no mistake second time around winning 5-2 with goals from Sammy Makin (2), Peter Chilvers, Ronnie Bagwell and an own goal. Fleetwood lasted only one further round that season however, losing 3-1 in a replay at fellow Lancashire Combination team Lancaster City. Fast forward six years to season 1961-62 and Milnthorpe arrived again at Highbury on 9th September 1961 for a 1st Qualifying Round tie. This time, Fleetwood made no mistake first time around thrashing the amateurs 9-1 with goals from Shepherd (4), Jones (3), Hollingworth and Jim Strachan before a crowd of 700. Again

40

however, Fleetwood’s cup ambitions that season ended in the next round with a 5-2 replay defeat at Burscough. Just 3 years later, on 5th September 1964, Milnthorpe again visited Highbury again in the 1st Qualifying Round and again they went home with another defeat, Fleetwood winning this time by 3-0 with goals from Whalley, Strachan and Irving before a crowd of 566. Yet again though, Fleetwood lasted only one further round and a 6-1 defeat at Morecambe ended our interest in the cup for a further season. It was to be just 12 months later though, on 4th September 1965 that the two teams were to meet once again, this time at Milnthorpe but again in the 1st Qualifying Round. The result was the same though as Fleetwood progressed with a comfortable 7-1 win courtesy of goals from Dave Chester (3), Jim Strachan (2), Barry Dilworth and an own goal. There was to be no next round exit for Fleetwood this time though as our win at Milnthorpe was the start of an FA Cup run which took us into the 1st Round proper for only the second time in our history. After further qualifying round wins against Horwich RMI (after a replay), Clitheroe and Colwyn Bay, Fleetwood’s 1st round tie against 4th Division Rochdale finished 2-2 in front of what is still Highbury’s record attendance of 6,150. A 5-0 replay defeat at Spotland was a slightly disappointing end to a fantastic 1965-66 FA Cup season. Fleetwood left the Lancashire Combination to join the newly

The Official Programme of fleetwood Town Football Club Season 2013/14

formed Northern Premier League in 1968-69 but that season saw one final FA Cup clash with Milnthorpe Corinthians. This time it was even earlier in the competition, an FA Cup Preliminary Round tie played at Highbury on 7th September 1968. Again, the outcome was a decisive Fleetwood win by 5-0 with goals from player-manager Derek Armstrong (2), Jim Strachan (2) and Andy Haddock before a crowd of 850. This was the 4th successive game between the two clubs incidentally in which Jim Strachan had scored for Fleetwood. Further FA Cup wins that season against Penrith (after a replay) and Clitheroe took us to the 3rd Qualifying Round where we again fell victim to our old rivals Morecambe 1-0 at Christie Park. That was our last ever game against the amateurs of Milnthorpe Corinthians and it is, of course, highly unlikely we will ever come across them again as they now ply their trade 9 levels lower than we do in the West Lancashire League 2nd Division. Our six FA Cup games against them though over a period of 14 years in the 1950’s and 60’s are an important part of our history.

Fleetwood’s FA Cup ties against Milnthorpe Corinthians: • 1955-56 Fleetwood 0-0 Milnthorpe (FA Cup 2nd Qual) • Milnthorpe 2-5 Fleetwood (FA Cup 2nd Qual replay) • 1961-62 Fleetwood 9-1 Milnthorpe (FA Cup 1st Qual) • 1964-65 Fleetwood 3-0 Milnthorpe (FA Cup 1st Qual) • 1965-66 Milnthorpe 1-7 Fleetwood (FA Cup 1st Qual) • 1968-69 Fleetwood 5-0 Milnthorpe (FA Cup Prelim)

For a club that resides outside of the top two divisions in English football, this represents a special day.

P

eople often talk about what the FA Cup means within the modern era of football, but for teams, like both Fleetwood Town and Burton Albion, the second round of the FA Cup figures highly in both team’s priorities for the season. For the winner, a potentially huge lucrative tie awaits against one of the Premier League’s giants and for the loser, well, they just have to wait another year for the excitement to come around once more. Fleetwood went out at this stage last year after being knocked out by a struggling Aldershot Town side, whilst Burton made the third round last year and were knocked out by Sky Bet Championship side Leicester City. What you can guarantee is that every side playing in this second round will want to be there. Burton go into today’s game on the back of last weekend’s 1-0 victory away at Plymouth Argyle – a result that stretched the Brewers winning streak to three games. Adam McGurk, who scored in Albion’s 3-2 over Fleetwood earlier in the season, scored the only goal in the twelfth minute to end Plymouth’s eight-match unbeaten run as his side picked up another three points to lift them up to sixth in the table. Pompey-bound? Chris Wilder with Graham Alexander at Highbury last Saturday

League 2 will be looking to be in the hat with only ourselves and Burton and the match between Chesterfield and Southend United representing all League 2 affairs. Looking across the division and, at the time of writing, Chris Wilder, the Oxford United manager, has been given permission to speak to Portsmouth about the vacant manager’s job at Fratton Park. Wilder, who has been in the U’s hot seat since 2008, is in the frame to replace Guy Whittingham, who was sacked by Pompey on Monday. Portsmouth had also approached Justin Edinburgh at Newport County, but the Football League new boys knocked back the approach and Oxford chairman Ian Lenagan has revealed he was unhappy that news of Portsmouth’s interest emerged shortly before his club’s match against Fleetwood. “We have allowed Chris Wilder to speak to Portsmouth, partly out

of respect for Chris’s long service and partly because we want our manager to be at Oxford United because he has the desire to be here, not because we prevent him speaking to other clubs,” said Lenagan. The selections have also been made for both the Manager and Player of the Month awards for November. Accrington Stanley boss, James Beattie, won three and drew one of his five games as the Reds moved away from the relegation places, whilst Phil Brown, Burton manager, Gary Rowett and John Ward also were nominated for the award. For the player award, our very own Steven Schumacher has made the four-man selection after scoring four goals, including a hat trick against Newport County, and he was joined by Luke Prosser (Southend United), Zavon Hines (Dagenham & Redbridge) and Ollie Banks (Chesterfield). “We want to take our time with this appointment. It’s important we get this one right, especially when you think we’ve had quite a few managers in a short period of time.” Northampton Town have moved themselves to within two points of safety after they halted Accrington Stanley’s eight-match unbeaten run. Stuart Dallas scored the only goal of the game as the Cobblers picked up their third win in five games. They would have found themselves had Bristol Rovers not comfortably beaten AFC Wimbledon at the Memorial Stadium. David Clarkson, Tom Parkes and Matt Harold scored the goals as they continued their steady improvement in the league, whilst Dagenham & Redbridge continued to keep the pressure up on the play-off places with a comfortable 2-0 win over 10-man Wycombe Wanderers in which Rhys Murphy fired in his tenth goal of the season.

The only other team to win in the top seven were Scunthorpe United who continued their fine form under caretaker manager Russ Wilcox. Saturday’s 3-1 win over Torquay United, who consequently slipped to the foot of the League 2 table, was Wilcox’s third straight victory and chairman Peter Swann has said Wilcox is a ‘serious contender’ to get the job on the full time basis.

Nevertheless, Chesterfield, Rochdale or Southend United could take advantage as they all dropped valuable points over the weekend. Paul Cook’s Chesterfield lost 3-2 away at Newport on Sunday in a game that was described by Justin Edinburgh as the best win of his side’s season. Edinburgh said: “It’s the best win of our season there’s no doubt about that. It’s a hugely pleasing result.

Elsewhere Exeter City and Bury drew 2-2 at St James Park and Hartlepool United and Portsmouth drew 0-0. Rochdale’s Keith Hill

minute equaliser to deny Southend United their sixth straight win in all competitions and York City kept their second consecutive clean sheet against Rochdale to deny the Keith Hill’s side the chance to also leapfrog Oxford United into top spot going into this weekend.

“I didn’t want to rush making a decision and I didn’t want the team in limbo so I felt it right to have another look at Russ and Tony, because obviously there’s always a bit of doubt when you put a new manager in,” Swann said.

cod army Juniors The 2nd round of the FA Cup is always special one, win then itĂs all about the 3rd round draw on Sunday.

T

here seems to be alot of games through this period and a lot of them due to the cup draws are at home. It means that the Juniors are getting to watch lots of football here in Fleetwood. A few of the Junior Section visited Accrington Stanley for the evening game and with no disrespect to Stanley, it shows what quality facilities we are now used to at Highbury, lets not take it for granted! It was cold, dark and the result was one not to remember. On a much more positive note, Parents, Coaches and Committee

members met up with both Matt Hilton and Declan Cox in Jims Bar, where the proposed new training complex was presented to us. The evening was a huge success, well supported by all and finished with a round of applause towards the proposal. Fleetwood Town Juniors are just one of many excellent grassroots setups in the Wyre area, and we encourage all Junior teams to support it then reap the rewards of using the quality facilities for generations to come. Christmas is fast approaching and already our tickets are bought for the Cod Army Juniors Christmas party on the 18th. If the Halloween party is anything to go by, then the event will be a huge success. Fancy dress again too! The Juniors have purchased 75 tickets so far and will purchase more should demand go further.

Speak to your team coach for more information. On the 21st of December, a Junior Cod Army Coach is off to Rochdale, it would be great to get as many Juniors on board, travel prices are just ÂŁ5 for U16s. A lot of the younger age groups do play on a Saturday morning, but are trying to rearrange, for the teams that play on a Sunday, FTFC will appreciate your support so get in touch with the club shop for more info. Back onto the game, lets cheer them on to the 3rd round.

Good luck to the Cods.

played with pondy

Former keeper Danny Hurst is the latest ex player to give his thought’s on Nathan Pond’s Testimonial

A seasonal long feature on players who have played with Nathan Pond, who is celebrating his Testimonial season after 10 years with Fleetwood Town. MARTIN BOOKER caught up with former goalkeeper DANNY HURST now at Southport quite a lot in terms of turnover of players each season, you just expected it to happen. I always had to perform to keep my place. All my memories at Highbury are good memories. I’m really pleased for the Chairman and I’m sure he’s enjoying his club now at the top end of Skybet League 2. The whole place has changed a lot, the ground and pitch is fantastic a credit to everything the club has achieved – it’s geared for more success. ”

Its Pondy’s Testimonial this year- thought’s on his achievement of 10 years at Highbury? “It’s fantastic, it does not happen nowadays and for a player to do it from that level to Football league I fantastic. In non-league players move on all the time but not him he stuck at it and fair play to him, I’m really pleased he has made it as a professional. To be there and start at the bottom and work your way up is accredit to him. Despite changes every season he has kept going and got the shirt. I joined the club when they were in Unibond 1st Division under Tony Greenwood, he was always a standout out performer back then and it does not surprise me now to see him making a name for himself in the Football League.”

54

What would you say was your highlight whilst at Fleetwood with Pondy? “ Winning the various leagues was fantastic really so I couldn’t pick one out. We had so many good times! My first game for the club was interesting, I got sent off after 40 minutes and Pondy went in goal as we 2-2 draw in the end. He made three ‘worldy’ saves and he got us the draw. That’s sums Pondy up – he can play anywhere!”

You spent 5 successful years winning three promotions at Highbury before your move to Barrow in 2011? “ Looking back it was a great spell of my career playing for a team that kept going for promotion. The team changed

The Official Programme of fleetwood Town Football Club Season 2013/14

Finally you are now working with former Cods Alan Wright and John Hills at Southport? “ Yes I signed this summer. We started off really well beating Luton one of the favourites and went on a good run. The last 5 or 6 games we have struggled a little so I hope we can pick up. Wrighty and Hillsy are great lads and I’ve always kept in touch. I was the gaffer’ first signing which was great but they deserve a success. ”

O.J, as he is more commonly known by his teammates is the most experienced player in Craig Madden’s squad, and also carries the burden of being captain: “It’s my job to ensure that the lads are doing what they should be doing and I feel that I’ve coped with it rather well. I see myself as a “fatherly figure” to some of lads anyway, whether that’s because I’m the oldest or not I’m not too sure, but I do enjoy the responsibility of it all. I relish leading the lads out and feel proud to be the captain”.

Ollie in training with the first team

Fleetwood Town youth team captain and 2nd year scholar, Oliver Martin, hopes his performances in recent months will stand him in good stead for a professional contract come the end of the season. Martin has been a key figure for Town’s youth team in recent months and his exploits between the sticks earned him a callup to the first team away at Wimbledon earlier in the season. The young Codlings, under the guidance of Craig Madden, Steve Carlin and Mark Bowley have improved this term with many catching the eye with some fine performances. Speaking to youth team reporter James Edwards, Martin said: We’ve been playing well so far this season, and if I’m honest I think we’re unlucky to be in the position that we’re in. However, if you look at it this way, we now have five wins under our belt which is one more than what we had for the entirety of last season and there’s still ten games to go”. Having finished just a place off the bottom of the North West Youth Alliance League last year, the keeper has seen a big improvement from the players: “I feel that as a squad we’ve become a stronger unit as we work well together and demand a high standard from and other.

56

Steve Carlin and Mark Bowley, Academy Director and Youth Team Coach respectively, drafted in Craig Madden as manager during the close season and Martin feels it’s been a fantastic appointment for the team: “He’s well respected amongst the group, as are all the coaches, as he fits in well with the team, and is a good person to have around the dressing room with his experience playing at a professional level”. IMAGE DSC_0838 CAPTION FA Youth Cup duty at Rotherham

With only ten league games of the season remaining and Martin in his second year, the decision will soon be made as to whether to give the goalkeeper a professional contract: “I feel that we all have as good a chance as each other, but it just depends on how much effort you put into every training session

and the way you act around the club. Obviously I hope I’m doing enough to catch the right people’s eyes, but only the time will tell and hopefully I’ll fulfil the target of earning the contract”. What will give the youngster hope though is that he was called down to Wimbledon at the eleventh hour by Graham Alexander, and Martin feels the experience gained with the first team was hugely beneficial: “It was a whirlwind 24 hours for me. Of course it was a great experience having to get to Manchester Airport, fly down to Heathrow and join up with the team, but unfortunately I didn’t make the squad as I was flown down to cover Dave Lucas. I wasn’t too fussed about it though and it was definitely a good memory to have and a great experience for me as a young player”. Having seen the success of former youth team players Jamie Allen, Jake Parker and Richard Wright in recent seasons, Martin hopes to be able to emulate his peers: “Hopefully I can do the same and join them in the ranks next season!”

It seems like only yesterday when Fleetwood became the 141st club to have played in the football league. Since that historic day, on the 18th August 2012, when Torquay provided the opposition here at Highbury, the number of players to have appeared for the club in the football league reached 50, when Blackpool loanee Nathan Tyson started in last week’s encounter against Mansfield Town. How things change at pace within the game with only Scott Davies in the starting XI last week remaining from that opening fixture of 16 months ago. The youngest to appear to date is Jamie Allen who made his debut away at Northampton aged 17 years 7months and 12 days, who on that same day became t

ood Afternoon and welcome to Highbury Stadium for what promises to be an exciting FA Cup tie with Budweiser this afternoon. The supporters’ of our opponents, Burton Albion, are particularly welcome. I am sure many of ‘The Brewers’ contingent will be making their second visit of the season here after their visit back in mid August. I can only hope though that the result is more favorable to Fleetwood Town on this occasion and that we can progress into the third round. In common, with all of the smaller clubs, we continue to dream of being drawn against one the Premier League big boys. Hopefully come 5pm tonight, the dream will be that bit more vivid. Next Tuesday we are in Cup action once more when attention will switch to our Johnstone’s Paint semi final against Rotherham United here at Highbury Stadium. Please note that tickets are available at just £10 for adults and £5 for seniors over 65. Additionally, under 16’s will be admitted to the game for free. Why not bring a friend, relation or a work mate to enjoy the action with us? Half season tickets are now available from the club shop. They represent extraordinary value in that purchasers’ will be able to watch our remaining 12 home league games of the season for the cost of nine. The half season tickets will commence with the Accrington Stanley match on New Year’s Day. They would also make an ideal

recently getting to the quarter finals twice in the last three years so it would be great to have another good run this year. Despite all that’s been happening on and off the oche I’ve still managed to keep an eye on Town’s results and it seems like the lads just need that bit more consistency with that amazing win over Mansfield followed by defeat at Accrington and a draw with Oxford United. I was surprised to see that the top of

the table draw with was only the second of the season. It’s back to FA Cup action today against Burton Albion. A win could give the lads Premier League opposition in the next round so here’s hoping for victory and Liverpool!

Cash Converters Players Championship Finals second round game between Wes Newton and Steve Beaton Credit “Lawrence Lustig/PDC

y feet have hardly touched the ground since baby Zac came along last week! It turned out to be a really quick birth and I got myself involved along with Stacey’s mum before the ambulance arrived! Everything’s fine and I was so glad I wasn’t away at a tournament. If I was down in Somerset where the last event has been I wouldn’t have got back in time although I remember Adrian Lewis going back to Stoke between rounds last year for the birth of his lad. We had thought of Isaac for a name but decided on Zac because we didn’t think Isaac Newton was the ideal combination! I got back to the dar`ts in the Cash Converters Players Championship at Minehead last weekend and considering my lack of practice and sleep these past few days I did well to reach the quarter finals. Eventually I was beaten by Michael van Gerwen who went on to beat Phil Taylor in the final and put himself in a great place with the World Championships just around the corner.

Yes, it’s back to Alexander Palace and this is the highlight of everybody’s year. I’m desperate to do well. It’s the one every player wants to win. It’s just the biggest event and the stage is miles bigger than any I’ve played on. When you first step up the dart board looks like a dot! When I first saw it I thought to myself, ‘My God, I’ve got to get up there and play!’ The room offstage is even bigger than the one we play in. It’s an unbelievable size. I’ve done well

one on one

sam gilland TALKS TO chris parsons

After coming so close to automatic promotion last season, Burton Albion, Fleetwood’s Sky Bet League 2 rivals, are back in the play-off mix, currently sitting sixth in the table. They also reached the second round of the FA Cup with a 2-0 win over Hereford and last year, the Brewers reached the third round of the competition before going out 2-0 at Championship side Leicester City. We caught up with Burton Albion’s new PR & Press Officer Chris Parsons for the lowdown on today’s FA Cup Second Round opponents. Albion progress at the expense of Hereford United

A chance to get into the FA Cup Third Round, how much does that match mean to Burton Albion Football Club? Chris: The Third Round of the FA Cup is a huge opportunity for clubs in the lower leagues to draw one of the Premier League big boys and Burton Albion are no different, everyone at Burton Albion will be wishing for a repeat of the Manchester United draw but of course we have to make the Third Round first.

You beat Hereford 2-0 to reach this stage, was it comfortable? Chris: It was tight but goals in each half by Adam McGurk and Matty Palmer knocked the wind out of Hereford’s sails and the match was reasonably comfortable because of that.

What’s your favourite FA Cup memory with Burton Albion? Chris: Having only joined a week prior to the Hereford United match that was my first official match as Burton Albion’s Press Officer so it’s the only memory I have in the FA Cup with Burton! Every supporter will recall the 0-0 draw against Manchester United in 2006!

FA Cup 3rd Round Replay Credit: Action Images / Jason Cairnduff

Burton sit one place above Fleetwood in League Two, do you anticipate remaining in the play-off positions at the end of this season? Chris: Albion have had an excellent week prior to today’s match with three 1-0 wins against Mansfield Town, Bristol Rovers and Plymouth Argyle. If they keep that form up they can easily finish in the play-off places although I know Gary and the players will not just limit themselves to the play-offs, especially with three automatic promotion places up for grabs.

Chris: Matty Palmer is playing well at the moment, at 18-yearsold he is regularly starting games in Sky Bet League 2 and scored his first every goal in the FA Cup against Hereford, he also made his debut against Accrington in the FA Cup last season so I suppose he has an FA Cup connection.

If Fleetwood progress, how far would you anticipate them going in the FA Cup? Chris: It’s hard to say without seeing who they would draw, like most teams in Sky Bet League 2 and 1 Fleetwood have the ability to beat anyone on their day, it just depends if they meet the likes of Arsenal in the Third Round.

Chris: Being a Plymouth Argyle fan myself I am going to have to say I rated Damien Johnson when he was there. He went to Argyle but didn’t get as many minutes as he would have liked due to a nasty injury but when he did play you could see he had played at a higher level, notably with Birmingham City.

Do you know much about Fleetwood as an area? Chris: Having been born in Devon I have never really had the opportunity to go to Fleetwood, all I know is that it’s near Blackpool! I have also been told they do good fish and chips here!

How many Burton Albion fans can we expect to see at Highbury for the match? Chris: I think we’ll bring between 150-250 Albion fans to Highbury.

And your score prediction? Chris: I think it’ll be a tight game but I’ll say 1-0 to Albion!

Nathan Pond knows about good fish’n’chips in Fleetwood

And you’re in good form, winning eight of the last 11, including three wins on the bounce now, the confidence must be flying?

Who in the Burton Albion side should we be looking out for?

Who in the Fleetwood Town side do you rate?

Chris: Confidence is high at the moment, there was talk about some indifferent home form but that’s now been put to bed with the two wins last week. The clean sheets have also given lots of confidence to the goalkeeper Dean Lyness and the rest of the defence.

What style of football can we expect to see from Burton at Highbury? Chris: Burton will pass the ball with confidence and look to make headway down the wings and press high up the pitch.

As a company, BES are proud to raise funds and contribute towards various Charitable Organisations throughout the course of each year. Having already helped Trinity Hospice, Brian House and Children in Need, The Staff at BES then led a campaign to raise funds by taking part in “MOVEMBER”.

The Foundation’s aim is to “change the face of men’s health” by encouraging men (or “Mo Bros”) to get involved by growing a moustache and behaving like a true gentleman during the month of November Movember is becoming a regular fundraiser in the BES offices based

at Fleetwood Town Football Club, where they have seen growth in Donations and participants. Darren Cronin and Paul Hagan recruited members from the Memorial Stand and Parkside offices respectively. Jordan Thomas, Stefan Willoughby, Matthew Hall, Andrew Clarke, Robert Danson, Chris Bird and Senior Manager Marcus Cook joined the group, and with the 10 strong team in place – the Mo Bros set the month off with the aim to reach a £500 target, made up entirely from donations from staff members. After a month of hard graft the

fellowship had reached their destination and arrived at the pinnacle of manhood! There were some outstanding examples of facial hair proudly on display atop smiles from all involved. This was met with an unbelievable sense of achievement when it was revealed that the Mo Bro’s had managed to smash their target and raise a huge £612, purely from donations, thanks to the generosity of BES staff. With the Company fast expanding, the Bro’s are looking forward to recruiting next year – and already thinking how to raise even more funds for this as well as multiple other worthy causes.

Cobbs corner

by robb cobb

The Football League is forgotten for today as the FA Cup second round swings into action for another season. 370 little clubs began the long road to Wembley way back in August and after this weekend there will only be 64 places left to fill. We have already had a gutful of Burton this year with seven goals leaked at home in February and August so it would be nice to turn the tables and knock them out of the competition this afternoon.

B

urton’s arrival at this stage all began with an extra preliminary round game at Emerald Park, Gorleston on 17th August. The home side defeated Deeping Rangers 2-1 and progressed to the preliminary round where they met, and defeated, Thetford Town 4-1. In the first round they were drawn away to Spalding United who beat them 1-0. Spalding got another home draw in the second qualifier but AFC Hornchurch won easily 4-1. AFC Hornchurch had a home tie in the next round against Wealdstone who they hammered 6-1. The fourth qualifying round awarded Hornchurch another home tie but Conference side Hereford United were too strong for them and got through 1-0. In the last round Burton saw off Hereford 2-0 with a goal in each half to set up today’s game. Fleetwood’s cup “family tree” is a bit shorter as Gloucester City and their opponents Havant and Waterlooville both entered the competition in the second qualifying round. The first game ended up a 1-1 draw with a replay at Havant seeing Gloucester win narrowly 3-2. Gloucester had to travel to Yate Town in the third qualifier and managed a 2-2 draw but easily won the replay 7-0. They had a home tie in the next round

72

beating Hampton and Richmond Borough 3-1 but their cup run ended when we beat them, unconvincingly, 2-0 at their Cheltenham ground a couple of weeks ago. We are scheduled to visit the Brewers on 25th January which is the date of the fourth round of the FA Cup so it is too early to make travel plans as one of the teams could still be involved. Although I would be thrilled to get to round four it is more likely that we will meet on that day and avoid a blank Saturday. A Tuesday night game would not allow as much sampling of the local liquid delights. As for last week’s game against Oxford I suppose a draw was a good point for us but it was nearly three. Scotty kept us in the game with the penalty save because if that had gone in we could have got a good caning. They never gave us a sniff of the ball after half time and showed just what a composed side they are. The league is so tight that a win would have taken us back to the top of the table but the draw dropped us down to seventh and nobody has pulled away so far. Four points separate the top nine clubs and four points cover the bottom five so winning games and being consistent has never been more vital. After many

The Official Programme of fleetwood Town Football Club Season 2013/14

years of mulling it over and counting my pennies I finally took the plunge and bought myself a Cod registration plate. I proudly drove it to the Oxford game and we didn’t lose so maybe it will prove to be a lucky purchase. Rotherham will be a tough one next Tuesday with Wembley beckoning but at least it will be a short respite from the ongoing league battle and the associated shredded nerves. And then I think we really must get some sort of result at Rochdale or we may begin to question our credibility in the promotion stakes. The loss of Ball and Matt has been a big blow for the club but we will just have to crack on and see what the New Year may bring.

Continuing with the A to Z of football grounds where I have seen Fleetwood play :

146. Squires Gate – School Lane Fleetwood’s first game at School Lane was as Freeport in the reformation season of 1997/98. We shared a 1-1 draw on Monday 6th April 1998 in NWCFL Div 2 before a crowd of 134. John Riches scored our goal after 37 minutes. My first visit there was in NWCFL Div 1 on Boxing Day 2002 when I bought the programme shown. The score was again 1-1 with 250 watching John Riches score once again. Town’s last game there was on Thursday 27th December 2004 in NWCFL 1 when a Stuart Beech goal secured a 1-0 victory with a crowd of 310. We also played a friendly game on 6th August 2005 which we won 1-0 thanks to Ricky Singleton. In that 2002/03 season Squires Gate came into the FA Cup at the preliminary stage but that was as far as they got losing 2-1 at home to Lincoln United. Fleetwood also came in at the same stage forcing a replay following a 1-1 draw at home to Workington but narrowly lost 1-0 after extra time at Borough Park.

153. Stone Dominoes – Springbank Park Our first visit to Springbank Park was quite a remarkable affair. We drove to their training ground miles away in error and didn’t arrive at the game until just before half time. We were three goals ahead after half an hour but then went 4-3 down until Lennie Reid snatched our equaliser just before time. 102 fans were well entertained in that NWCFL Div 1 fixture on 10th January 2004. The other scorers were Stuart Beech, Lee Catlow and an own goal. Town’s last game there on 26th March 2005 was a quieter 1-1 draw with our equaliser being an 89th minute diverted own goal! In that 2004/05 season Dominoes had their best ever FA Cup run beating Boston Town away 2-1 in the preliminary round and Sutton Town 3-0 at home in a first qualifying round replay before bowing out in the next round 3-0 at Worksop Town. It seems hard to believe now but In that season Fleetwood started at the even earlier extra – preliminary stage with a 5-2 win at Tadcaster Albion. We finally made it to the second qualifying round but went out 2-1 in a replay at Runcorn Halton.
