blast off by ZAC TOUMAZI, CHIEF EXECUTIVE

Welcome to Friday evening once again at The BrightonandHoveJobs.com County Ground and also a big welcome to the supporters, players and staff of Glamorgan. Tonight is a very special evening as we hold a ‘Pink Day’ here at Hove and we hope that as you are reading this that you will have decided to wear something pink for the match! We’re raising money for The Lily Foundation and the inspiration for the event is Jessica Newell, daughter of former Sussex and Glamorgan all-rounder Keith Newell, who suffers from Mitochondrial Disease, for which there is no cure and no treatment.

Contents 04: IN THE PICTURE – FRIDAY NIGHT T20 ACTION 07: TYMAL MILLS – LIFE IN THE FAST LANE 09: LUKE WRIGHT – WE’RE IN A GREAT POSITION 10: TONIGHT’S SCORECARD 13: MIKE YARDY’S BEST XI 15: TONIGHT’S VISITORS – GLAMORGAN 17: FIXTURES, RESULTS AND TABLE 19: INTRODUCING YOUR SHARKS

Jessica will be the official mascot for tonight’s match and you’ll be able to see both teams wearing pink Lily Foundation shirts during the warm-ups. There will be a bucket collection this evening around the ground so please do give generously so that the Lily Foundation can continue to fund vital research into this heart-breaking disease. Back out on the pitch, I’m hoping we can recreate the form we showed down at the Cardiff the other weekend as we won by ten wickets with a dominant display. It was our second victory in a four-match winning run really gave us the boost we needed to get another couple of wins under our belt. Despite the result against Kent last Friday it was fantastic to see the ground packed to the rafters. It was an incredible boost to sell the game out so early and we’ll hope that with three Friday night matches on the spin that everyone gets the chance to cheer on the Sharks at Hove as we look to make a push towards those quarterfinal places. After these next two home NatWest T20 Blast matches we’ll back in outground mode as we head to Horsham for another Festival of Cricket in what should be another fine spectacle. I’ll hope to see you there.

tymal takes advantage

Tymal Mills celebrates the dismissal of Nick Compton, one of his four wickets in the win over Middlesex last week ago.

Sharks’ fast bowler enjoying his role in the shortest format of the game

The Sussex bowler has been out of LV=County Championship action recently due to an ongoing back problem.

competition. All my eggs are in one basket as I am only playing T20 so to be taking wickets quite regularly is nice.

While Mills is frustrated at being restricted to white ball cricket it has helped him produce some superb performances in the NatWest T20 Blast. The 22-yearold took career best figures of 4-22 in the victory over Middlesex at Lord’s last week to overtake Ollie Robinson as Sussex’s leading wicket-taker in the competition.

“As my focus is just on this competition it means I’ve got all week to prepare. I can see all the footage of who we’re playing against and come up with different plans to get them out. I have got a lot of time to think about it and I think that has helped me and hopefully I will continue to do well.”

His display earned praise from the current England T20 captain Eoin Morgan and assorted pundits in the Sky commentary box. And Mills says the fact he is able to focus 100% on the shortest format of the game has been a key factor in his excellent form.

Mills helped spearhead a run of five consecutive wins which has lifted Sussex from the lower reaches of the south group to the verge of the quarter-finals, despite the defeat to Kent at Hove a week ago.

Mills said: “I’ve been pretty happy with the way I have bowled all

Another victory against Glamorgan tonight would virtually guarantee their place in the

knockout stages for the first time since 2012. Mills added: “Confidence is a massive thing in T20 cricket and it’s high in the group at the moment. Everybody knows their role and what their job is and they’re confident in executing it. Things are looking good but we can’t afford to ease up otherwise you can lose all that momentum you’ve worked so hard to build up. “We’re all desperate to reach the quarter-finals but I’ve got an extra incentive as I’m not playing in the Championship. The back injury is still there so I might not play any first-class cricket for the rest of the season so if we don’t do well in the white ball stuff my season could be done by mid-August.”

With three games to go, starting against Glamorgan here at Hove tonight, the Sharks are second in the South Group despite losing top spot to Kent Spitfires after we suffered our first defeat in five games at the BrightonandHoveJobs.com County Ground last Friday.

He said: “We have got so much to be confident and pleased about.

In such a competitive group no one really knows how many points will be needed to secure a topfour place or even a top two finish which would be enough to get a home tie in the quarter-finals.

“The Kent game was one of those days which was a shame because there was a big crowd here last Friday and we wanted to put on a show. We said afterwards that we’d rather be bowled out for 90 going hard all the way through our innings. It was a 160 sort of pitch and we ended up with 130 which Kent chased brilliantly. They lost three early wickets but kept scoring quickly and showing their intent.”

But after two years when the Sharks failed to progress beyond the group stages, the skipper is delighted with our current position.

With another home game to come next week against Hampshire followed by a trip to the Kia Oval for our final group match on July 24 there is still so much to play for.

Skipper Luke Wright has urged his side to produce one more big push to ensure our place in the quarter finals of this year’s NatWest T20 Blast

Luke on the attack during his innings of 47 in the win over Middlesex last week

“It’s certainly not all doom and gloom,” added Luke. “We had won our previous four matches before last Friday and if someone had offered the position we’re in with three games to go I’d have snapped their hands off. “We’ve had two disappointed years in T20 so to be in the position we’re in is really pleasing. This time last year we were playing dead games in the competition and now we have three tough matches, starting tonight, when there is something on every game. We have got a great chance of getting to the quarter-finals.”

Glamorgan in the mood Glamorgan arrive at the BrightonandHoveJobs.com County Ground tonight determined to build on one of their best wins of the season and consolidate their place in the top four of the South Group. They beat Hampshire by 23 runs at the Ageas Bowl last Friday thanks to a fine 77 by Jacques Rudolph and some canny leadership by their experienced South African captain. With former Sussex player Wayne Parnell missing through international commitments and seamer Graham Wagg ruled out with a back injury Rudolph employed his spinners to bowl 14 overs in Hampshire’s pursuit of a target of 182 and it did the trick as they could only manage 158 for 6. It was Glamorgan’s sixth win in 11 games – they have lost the other five including the ten-wicket loss to Sussex last month – and a strong finish should secure their place in the quarter-finals. “It was potentially one of our best performances of the seasons considering we lost Wayne Parnell and Graham Wagg,” said Rudolph. “We’ve turned it around and we’ve got three games left to get us into the quarters.” Rudolph’s runs came from 45 balls and in another tactical switch Craig Meschede was dropped down the order and provided impetus at the end and responded with 35 from 17 balls including four sixes. “Missing Graham and Wayne I thought it would be better if Colin Ingram opened up and to send Meschy down the order,” added Rudolph. “He is the one guy in our team who at will can hit sixes and he showed that against Hampshire. Craig gave us some momentum and impetus.” Rudolph even turned his arm over to good effect, taking two wickets with his part-time leg spin as well as taking the catch which ended Michael Carberry’s potentially match-winning knock of 70 from 46 balls. “I made jokes last week that we would have to use 16 overs of spin after losing two of our front line seamers and we weren’t far off,” added Rudolph. Rudolph’s wicket will be most coveted by the Sharks tonight. He has scored 406 runs so far, fewer than just three other batsmen, while experienced left-arm spinner Dean Cosker is the Welshman to watch with the ball, having taken 16 wickets so far.

Jacques Rudolph has scored more than 400 T20 runs for Glamorgan this season
