Letter from the publisher Fall is here and that means back to school! And one of my favorite holidays – Halloween! Back to school season is almost like the “new year” for me – it’s a time for moms to have a little more time for themselves (during the day at least). It’s time to “organize” the new year’s teacher information, put the school holidays on the calendar, and maybe take some extra time for you. During this time last year, I made the decision to make some changes in my life – and take care of me. And what an incredible journey THAT has been. You can read the whole story on page 16. Are you a mom with a business? I’d love to invite you to our sister magazine’s live event – SUCCESS Summit – for entrepreneurial women. We have a fantastic speaker lineup to help you start or grow your own business. And it’s RIGHT HERE in the South Bay! Use promo code WUFK2014 and get $50 off any ticket. As you can see, we’ve given the magazine a facelift too! We are about to celebrate 19 years in publication – and we are still the ONLY print magazine serving families in the South Bay. Remember to visit our website regularly for the latest and greatest things to do with your family! In this issue, we have lots of great back to school stuff. Looking for new classes? We’ve got everything from art to acting and sports to language! How about family friendly cooking? We have a few great recipes in this edition plus our spotlight on Grow in Manhattan Beach. Looking for special activities? We have two shopping centers with special kids’ activities – not to mention our calendar jam packed with family friendly fun. Be sure to tell our advertisers where you saw them! And check out our website for local discounts and deals from them as well. Just go to www.whatsupforkids.com and click on “Deals for Families”. So get out those colored pens, your academic calendar, and schedule in some ME time, and maybe even a date night or two! You’ll be glad you did!

Healthy Families Paleo (Grain Free) Banana Bread One of my staple sweets was banana bread when I was in college and then living in New York City. The deli on First Ave that I lived above would actually give me their old bananas and butter to make them banana bread. I was used to having so many leftover brown bananas because I prefer them perfectly yellow-no brown. There is a small window of opportunity to eat a banana perfectly yellow so as you can imagine, there was always left over bananas. Now that I am eating mostly Paleo (95% of the time), I was anxious to try this banana bread recipe grain free. My husband took half of it with him on a recent plane ride so I think it’s safe to say it’s good for the average palate.

Ingredients: ½ c Coconut Flour ½ c Almond Meal/Flour 3-4 Tbsp Ground Toasted Flax Meal (the toasted has a nice “pie crust” flavor) 3-4 Tbsp of Ground Walnuts (or another like Macadamia or Pecan) 1 c Mashed Ripened Bananas (about 2 or 3) ½ c Melted Grass Fed Organic Butter or Coconut Oil (or a combination) ¾ tsp Cinnamon ¾ tsp Baking Soda ¼ c Honey 4 Eggs ½ tsp Vanilla Pinch of Sea Salt

Instructions:

Combine the wet ingredients first, add baking soda and spices, then add flours. Spray a bread pan with coconut oil or melted butter. Bake 350 for 45-50 min, checking to see if the middle is done and firm. You may need 5 minutes more or less, make sure to check it since every oven is different.

Anytime is the right time to dip your toes back into the dating pool. And to get you off on the right foot here are 15 helpful do’s and don’ts. 1. Do tell your children you’re dating. 2. Cookin’ Corner Creepy Witch’s Finger Cookies Halloween is such a fun time of year. I love brainstorming costumes with my kids, making spooky crafts and best of all, baking up some tasty (creepy) treats! These Witch’s Finger Cookies are a Halloween favorite in my family and are sure to please all the little monsters and goblins in your house! Ingredients: 1 cup Butter (softened) 1 cup Icing Sugar 1 Egg 1 tsp Vanilla 1 tsp Almond Extract 2-3/4 cups All Purpose Flour 1 tsp Baking Powder ½ tsp Salt ¾ cup Whole Blanched Almonds Green food coloring (optional) Red decorating gel (blood for finger tips) Instructions: Beat butter, sugar, egg, vanilla and almond extract. Mix in flour, baking powder & salt. Add food coloring if desired. Cover and refridgerate for 30 min. Remove 1/4 of the dough at a time (keep the rest cool). Take a spoonful of dough and roll into finger shape for each cookie. Press dough and create knuckle shape. Use a sharp knife and cut several slashes on each knuckle (this makes it look more realistic). Press an almond into the end of each cookie to make the nail. Bake at 325 for 20-25 min. Cool, then lift up each almond. Squeeze red gel into the empty space, then replace all the almonds on top of the red gel (kids love this step). Now enjoy! Editors note: Alison Edwards is an entrepreneur and mom of two who has always had a penchant for baking. With several family members (including herself) suffering from food allergies and sensitivities, she is especially focused on trying out new recipes that everyone in the family can enjoy. Alison is the owner/ creator of Pineapple Pete Kids, a small business which produces sensory friendly clothing for children with skin sensitivities. Summer Family Get Away To The Lake Tahoe Area By Cindy Donnelly For the past three years we have been enjoying a week long summer getaway to the Lake Tahoe area. We love being up in the mountains with the lake, rivers and trees. There is a lot of activities to choose from, and so there is something for everyone in the family to enjoy. We stay at the Squaw Valley Lodge. It has condo units available that we like because we can prepare some meals at home, and not have to rush out to breakfast in the morning. It also has a nice family friendly pool, gym, ping pong table and tennis courts. Adjacent to the hotel is the Village at Squaw Valley which has shops, restaurants, a Sky jump, rock wall and the tram up to High Camp where the Squaw Valley Olympics were held. The tram ride up to High Camp offers amazing mountain views and once at High Camp there is a roller rink, and pool along with hiking opportunities. Tickets are required for the tram and you do need to pay to swim and skate, but it is definitely worth going if you have never been, look for deals online. Before you make the trip down, don’t miss the small museum dedicated to the Squaw Valley Olympics, it is easy to miss, but very interesting and does not take too much time to visit. From Squaw Valley you can rent bikes and cycle along the bike path next to the beautiful Truckee River, or you can walk along the path. You can also raft along the Truckee if the water level allows, this year the season ended early due to the drought. It is a short drive to Tahoe City which offers great views of Lake Tahoe, shopping and restaurants as well as kayak, paddle board and jet ski rentals. Several companies also offer boat rides out on the lake. Last year we tried out the Tahoe Gal, which was touristy but fun for the kids. Another easy side trip is the mountain town of Truckee. There is an old town main street and during the summer they offer Truckee nights with food, vendors, music and fun. It is very easy to miss this if you do not venture off the highway, so definitely make sure you make it to the center of the old town area! Do not leave the Lake Tahoe area without visiting Emerald Bay. You can enjoy it from the scenic view area and it is one of the most beautiful views of the Lake. If you want to explore it further, there is hiking in the area as well. Editors note: Cindy Donnelly works for Alessandra Media Group, parent company of What’s Up for Kids. She lives in San Pedro with Brian, her husband of 25 years, and her two daughters, Clarissa age 19 and Molly age 8. She enjoys sharing new discoveries and things to do with our readers.

Cathy Alessandra A Journey Of YES I CAN!

Much has happened for me in the last few months. If you have been following me recently, you know I’ve lost 50 pounds. However, it’s more than just the weight loss. It’s a total transformation in mind, body and spirit. A massive shift that has opened up my world in many ways, and as a direct result, my business is booming! Let me share…. You may have already seen my Yes I Can video, but in the 7 minute video I share the truth about things in my life the last few years (you can opt-in to watch the video at www.yesicanwomen.org). I’ve struggled with my son, my marriage, my self-worth and most visibly obvious, my weight. These are things you may struggle with as well – or your challenges may be totally different. Life is not perfect. Even if it looks like it from the outside, there is ALWAYS an internal struggle of some sort. Yet sometimes we forget and think we are the only one in that deep dark hole! I had been encouraged to spend a week in solitude – alone with no TV, no internet, no email, no phone. Well – a week was NOT going to happen. But 24 hours did – and it was that 24 hours that changed my life. I spent the time in meditation and contemplation. But also reading the book “The Four Agreements” by Don Miguel Ruiz. The four agreements talk about being impeccable with your word, not making assumptions, not taking things personally and always doing your best. In summary from the author, 1. Be Impeccable with your Word: Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the Word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your Word in the direction of truth and love. 2. Don’t Take Anything Personally: Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering.

16 What’s Up For Kids

September/October 2014

3. Don’t Make Assumptions: Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life. 4. Always Do Your Best: Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse, and regret. Reading the book is where my eyes were opened and the shift began. But in all honesty, it was the “perfect storm”. I had spent the previous weekend at Alison Armstong’s (Understanding Men, Celebrating Women) Queen Code course. (Alison was our feature story last issue.) I’d also been introduced to Rita Black and her SHIFT program for weight loss. But as I became more aware and tried to live every day by living the four agreements, my life began to transform and others came into my life to support my transformation journey – including Chef Varouj! The shift also skyrocketed my business in ways I never expected! During my journey, I’ve realized there are 3 things that are critical to my continued transformation and success: 1. SELF CARE – While I’ve heard it a million times, I needed to stop and smell the roses – FOR ME! Self care can be anything from daily exercise, meditation or journaling to a day at the spa or weekend away! Make yourself a PRIORITY! 2. SACRED SPACE – We need boundaries and space. Being alone is not “comfortable” for me – or at least it wasn’t. Now I understand that I need my alone time, that I need to distance myself and put up boundaries for people and things that simply don’t or can’t support me. I need to keep my space sacred and honor myself in all that I do so that I can be who I am. 3. SUPPORT – Whether from a spouse or significant other, a trusted friend, or a professional (and I got all three!), you need support. You simply cannot do it alone. I’d like to invite you on the journey of life transformation with me. You can join the YES I CAN movement for FREE at www.yesicanwomen.org – and if you would like additional support, you can even join Your Daily YES, a new membership program working with me on your journey of YES I CAN! Your journey is only a YES I CAN away! Don’t wait another day or minute. Give yourself the gift of a joy filled life and say YES I CAN to your life’s dreams!

On Dad’s Watch Dancing In The Rain by Michael Malgeri Recently we celebrated our daughter’s 8th grade dance, a prelude to graduation and the end of her middle school career. I watched a stylist curl her hair, thankful a limousine wasn’t waiting to whisk her off to the altar. It’s not that I don’t want her to get married some day, but she owes me a lot more stories and I’m gonna collect. So with high school just a few months away, I was happy a friend posted the image above on Facebook. After, “I always love you,” its words capture one of three life lessons I’d want her to learn if I only had three lessons to teach. At this stage in her life, the other lesson pertains to cleaning her room or giving her phone a rest, but I promise to have more sage words of wisdom by the time that limousine pulls up. By the way, I took the liberty of pinning the image to the bedroom doors of both our kids as well as my own mirror and my wife’s Kindle...she’s such a book worm. It doesn’t rain much in Redondo Beach, but when the next storm comes, literally or figuratively, we hope we’ll have the courage to dance...and wish the same for all of you! Editor’s Note: Along with “On Dad’s Watch” Michael has also writtten a series of books he calls “Bedtime Stories about Capitalism,” which teaches kids about honest profit making. Family Dentistry by Mitra Evans, D.D.S. 5 Clues Your Child Is not Brushing 1.The toothbrush is dry. It's tough to keep the toothbrush dry if you're actually brushing! Make sure to check your child’s toothbrush every day (and night ) – before it has time to dry. 2. You can still see food particles. After your child has brushed, ask for a smile. If you can still see bits of food on or in between your child's teeth, send your child back to the bathroom for a do-over. 3. Teeth don’t pass the “squeak test.” Have your child wet his or her finger and rub it quickly across the outside and inside of his or her teeth. If the teeth are clean, you will hear a squeaking sound. 4. Breath is everything but fresh. If your child is brushing and flossing regularly, his or her breath should be fresh. The foul odor associated with bad breath is most often caused by food particles -- either food left in between teeth or food trapped in the grooves on the tongue. 5. Your child has a toothache. Even if you can't tell if your child is brushing well, a toothache is a red flag. Make sure your child sees the dentist right away – a filling or other treatment may be in order. Remember, brushing is just one part of your child’s total oral health regimen. In order to remove stubborn plaque and tartar buildup and prevent other dental problems, regular exams and cleanings are a must. Plus, your dentist can help reinforce the importance of good oral hygiene with your child.

You Can Improve Your Relationship With These Simple Tips by Jonathan Aslay When a relationship hits a rocky patch, it can be difficult to decide what to do next. Sometimes you need to take a break and just relax. Know that whatever needs to happen will, so don’t force anything or push your partner into anything. Here are some quick “understand men now” tips: •

If he’s grumpy, don’t fall into the grouchy trap too. Let him know you’re there when he wants to talk. Then go and do your thing. He’ll find you when he’s ready.

Don’t walk on eggshells. If something is bothering you, let him know. Men hate it when women cry, so don’t overdo it, but if something truly upsets you enough to bring tears, it’s OK to be authentic.

Think before you speak whenever possible. You can’t take words back once they’re out of your mouth, but you can prevent a foot-in-mouth problem by waiting a few seconds before saying something you’ll regret.

Fight fairly. Don’t bring up old stuff from 5 years ago. In fact, don’t bring up anything older than a few months. You’re not the same people you were then, and no one likes paying for the same mistake more than once.

Don’t involve anyone else in your relationship issues. It’s none of their business, and you don’t need the aggravation or the distraction.

Get away. Go out of town for a weekend and make a pledge to just have fun and enjoy each other. You may see him and your relationship with new eyes.

Remember when you first started dating. How did you feel? Let yourself feel that way again for a while, and think about why you fell in love with him.

The Organized Family Clean Sweep... new & easy tips! Who doesn’t like a clean home, without hiring a cleaning service? Here are some QUICK & easy tips to get you and your family started on some dreaded chores. 1. Good equipment is key to getting things done easily. Disposable purchased dust cloths grab up the dirt and not just move it around on the surface. Cloths are also made for “mops” and come in dry and wet. Check them out at the store to see which you can use. 2. Spray polish can renew wood surfaces. Tip: spray onto the cloth and not directly onto the area you are polishing. This eliminates spraying onto areas not intended, such as upholstery, etc. 3. Micro fiber cloths are great for windows and mirrors. They are lint free and reusable. Wet wipes are great for sink & tub/shower faucets and hardware. Don’t forget the towel bar hardware. 4. Spray cleaners are also made for cleaning the bathtub and shower, eliminating a lot of scrubbing with dry cleansers and sponges. 5. Cleaning liquids are made specifically for toilets. Swirl the liquid around the bowl and let it sit for a few minutes before using the bowl brush to clean it. Remember to sanitize the brush regularly (using ©bleach water) and replace as needed. Wet wipes are good for cleaning the top of the toilet tank and the flusher handle, as well as the base of the toilet and the floor around it. A chore no one likes, but necessary. 6. Using the end of a broom, covered with a cleaning cloth, grab up those nasty cobwebs that “grow” in ceiling corners. 7. Window cleaner is usually safe for most kitchen counter tops and makes them shine. Some surfaces are better cleaned with soap and water. Making a spray bottle with water and a few drops of dish soap is an easy way to do this.

8. Remember to change the kitchen sponge daily. You can also zap it in the microwave for a minute, add it to your dishwasher or drop into the laundry (which is what I do). Keep a few on hand for this. I understand that the sponge is the most germ-laden item in your kitchen. When food, etc. sits in the sponge it grows bacteria. Yikes! Well, that should get you started. Oh yes… and get the entire family involved in cleaning. I have a saying in my home: “We share the fun and the dirt.” If you have a cleaning tip, let me know. I am always open to new ideas. Enjoy your clean home! ©Ann Gambrell July 2014

Act Your Heart Tell us a little about your program? Act Your Heart is a very unique performing arts studio that focuses on the original creation of art for ages 4-17, whether it be through performance or film. It takes place at our studio in Torrance after school and on weekends. Each program is designed to enhance the development of growth in their designated age group. For ages 7-12, the musical theater program offers a world premiere, full length musical written and composed for the specific students who enroll. For ages 4-6, our young artists will be introduced to the field of art by incorporating literature, music, movement, acting and visual art. They will finish the program with an original scene and song to showcase their newly acquired skills. What do kids enjoy about your program? The studio philosophy aims to create a safe place for children and high school students to become a part of the community. To do this, we implement team work and ensemble building as the foundation. This allows the participants to feel a freedom of creativity, emotion and imagination. We do not do pre-program auditioning, for we feel this causes an environment of competition and stunts artistic expression. Participants at Act Your Heart are given a home away from home. What is unique about your program? The studio offers each child or teenager an original experience that is created specifically for their own personal goals and challenges. Every session will be entirely different depending on who is enrolled and the talents they bring to the table. We strive to expand their abilities rather than dictate our own. In addition, our beautiful studio offers state of the art facilities including a black box theater and production studio, a recording studio, a rehearsal studio, and a green screen. This professional atmosphere provides the ideal canvas for any artist. What is happening this fall with Act Your Heart? The fall session is enrolling now and will begin in September. We invite any interested parties to come stop by our Open House on September 14th from 3pm-5pm. Come ask questions and view our beautiful studio space! Free RSVP sign-ups are on our website actyourheart.com. In addition we will have a booth at Fiesta Hermosa on Labor Day weekend, we will be offering fun prizes and a photo booth at both!
