Letter From The Publisher: Publisher The holiday season is upon us—and with it brings lots of special celebrations, activities and family time! We have loads of fun activities inside this issue—both in the calendar and from our advertisers! Holiday activities at the malls, special winter camps and so much more! While for me and many moms it typically ends up being crazy and chaotic, I’ve made a promise to myself this year to spend more time enjoying family and friends—and step out of the chaos! It’s going to be ok if all the cookies don’t get baked, the presents don’t have the perfect bow, the holiday card is late (though I must admit, we took the photo back in August!) I’ve had one daughter in Europe since August, one in Northern CA since September, and a crazy Fall myself with events and publishing two magazines. I’m looking forward to a little downtime! 2012 has been an interesting year for me—and for our family. We’ve overcome challenges and celebrated accomplishments. I’ve learned a lot about the world around me—what is real and what isn’t worth a fleeting thought. In reflecting over the year’s events, I am grateful for SO many wonderful things, and left dazed and questioning the little bit of ugly. But I know what goes around comes around (yes, Karma is a you know what!) and that there are lessons to be learned in all of life’s ups and downs! To sum up my 2012, it is best said in the words of Dr. Seuss... “Those who matter don’t mind; and those who mind, don’t matter.” Have a wonderful holiday season and best wishes for 2013,

QUICK TIPS FOR ORGANIZING QUICK TIPS FOR ORGANIZING Organize the Bathroom By Ann Gambrell Someone said, "Always keep your bathroom neat & clean, as it's the only room your guests go into and close the door!" Other reasons: insure an easy “in and out” in the morning rush when sharing the bathroom. And to insure an easy to clean, well supplied area. Six simple tips: 1. Maintaining supplies. Keep paper and pen in nearby to note needed supplies. 2. Drawer dividers to organize items. Desk drawer dividers or kitchen cutlery trays work well. 3. If drawer space is at a premium, store make-up, manicure/pedicure articles, shaving supplies, in small plastic baskets, making them easy to store and retrieve. 4. Solution to difficult to reach shelves place items stored there in a basket or washbasin. Easy to access, thus not forgetting items. 5. Keeping cleaning supplies at hand will insure easy and more frequent cleaning. My solution: is to clean the mirrors one day, tub and shower another day, sink another day, etc. Then you start over again, just doing one thing a day. Works for me! Caution: secure cleaning supplies when small children are in residence. 6. Discard products you no longer use. Donate to shelters or care facilities if appropriate. Keeping bottles, hair dryer, toothbrushes and decorative items off the counter tops will also cut back on areas to keep clean. If they need to remain there, corral them into a decorative basket or container, making for easy counter top clean up. I hope these tips will be helpful for this busy area of your home. These simple ideas can help to reduce clutter, maintain order and reduce stress. Now take a soak in the bathtub and enjoy your “new” bathroom. Courteous & Cool Courteous & Cool Please….. RSVP By Kari Doody It seems to me that people have gotten much lazier about RSVP’s? I know our lives have gotten incredibly busy but responding to an RSVP has become incredibly easy to do with email and cell phones readily available. A couple of months ago I had a party at my house for a group of my husbands college friends and had 44 people RSVP “yes.” That may sound like a lot, but what surprised me the most was that only a quarter of those people showed up? Needless to say I was disappointed and was left with way to much food and favors. I couldn’t believe that so many adults RSVP’d “yes” and then didn’t show up? I think it’s important to train our kids early of the importance of responding to an event. It is important to respond to your host as soon as possible to let them know whether or not you can attend. Explain to your kids that in order for the host to have enough food, a place for you to sit and party favors, you have to RSVP. It’s also important to let your kids know that once you say “yes” you need to show up even if a better opportunity comes around. Now sometimes things come up that can’t be avoided. Canceling at the last minute can be very disappointing for both you and the host. If this does happen, call the host right away and make sure you tell them why you can’t make it. A phone call is actually best, so that you can speak to the person directly. So next time you get an invitation, keep in mind the amount of work and preparation a host puts into planning a party and make sure you don’t leave anyone hanging! For more etiquette tips and classes in your area, visit courteousandcool.com Kari Doody is Founder of the Courteous and Cool Etiquette School. After having three children and sharing stories with other mom’s, she realized that many role models that our children look up to were in the news – and not in a good way. We aren’t born with good manners, they need to be cultivated at a young age and reinforced throughout young adulthood. Whatever level your child is at, she can help them improve their skills and confidence – and they can have fun doing it with my age appropriate games and activities. HAPPY HOLIDAYS! Or NOT? 3 Steps to Help Parents Reduce Holiday Stress! By Erin Kurt

The holidays are coming up, and although many parents look forward to having their children home from school, they also find that after a few days it isn't so easy having the kids underfoot all the time. The children are all excited about Christmas, they start fighting more often, and when they're not doing that they complain to their parents that they’re bored. Here are a few ideas for maintaining sanity during these both enjoyable and difficult times. 1. Help Kids Plan or Structure One Part of Their Day With school-age kids, structure part of each day, then let them figure out what they are going to do to entertain themselves. Don’t fall into the trap of seeing yourself as the entertainment committee! You might help “Emily” by allowing her to have a friend over to eat dinner, then watch a video. The rest of the day your daughter decides what she'll do. 2. Be Clear About the Rules From the Start Make the above rules clear as soon as the holiday starts, so when the kids come up to you and say, "There's nothing to do, " you can reply, "You and I will be going out at 4, but in the meantime I'm sure you can think of something." Above all, don't keep making suggestion after suggestion, only to have your child shoot down each idea. Making lots of suggestions for what they can do implies that you are responsible for their keeping busy and feeling entertained. 3. Plan Lots of One-on-One Fun Plan lots of activities 1:1 with your children. Just you and one child- no spouse or siblings. Not only does this eliminate fighting, it offers the opportunity for real closeness and bonding. Most parents find that it's easier to have fun when it's just you and one child, rather than the whole family together. Kids love having a parent all to themselves, and under these circumstances each child is usually much easier to get along with. Editor's Note: Erin Kurt, B.Ed., discovered her passion for studying families when she herself was a child, interviewing her friends’ parents and siblings to learn more about their family life. Throughout her education and years of experience, Erin became an expert on child development, child psychology, family counseling, and methods of improving children’s self-esteem and learning capabilities. On Dad’s Watch On Dad’s Watch Best Coffee By Michael Malgeri During moments of selective memory, I'll reminisce about the diaper days and the joy of toddlers roaming the house. Perhaps the movie "Monster's, Inc." was correct. Children’s laughter is more powerful than screams. Of course they never auditioned our kids, who could scream-shatter the porcelain art in the Louvre from Redondo Beach. Thankfully, sentimental memories of days gone by are replaced by fresh tender moments. Take this conversation I had with our daughter this week. "Dad, why does your cup say 'World's BEST coffee?' How do they KNOW it's the BEST?!" In this case it wasn't Starbucks but their archrival, "Coffee Bean" that she was referring to. "Wellllllll, perhaps if they said, 'This Coffee Will breed a colony of killer worms in your stomach' no one would buy it?" Note the valley girl question mark at the end of my response accompanied by the epidemically annoying upward inflection. It instantaneously enhanced my ability to "relate.” "DAD! Seriously!" OK, maybe I wasn't relating that well. "Take a sip, and if you don't think it's the best coffee in the world, let's take it back and fling it against the mahogany wall and shout, "LIARS! LIARS!" She laughed and I basked. I was proud of her for making a mature observation. "You know, I'm proud of you for making a mature observation." See, I actually said it! "You'll see advertising like that from companies. It's up to you, the consumer, to make the final decision. The companies that tell the truth will do better than those that don't. Do you understand?" She nodded, smiled, and seemed happy about her new role as a consumer. It was a sentimental moment much different than watching her crawl around in diapers, but one just as sweet.

Motivating Yourself to Exercise By JJ Flizanes

One of the biggest complaints I have heard over the years is that “exercise is hard because I am not motivated!” If you live near Los Angeles, I will be doing a live class on this topic on Saturday November 10th. Visit http:// tinyurl.com/9vckgol to learn more: In the meantime, here are a few tips! Tip#1: Success Stories: Everyone gets a boost of inspiration when they see or read something about an amazing transformation that someone else has had. If you are feeling off track, take ten minutes at your computer and look up weight loss success stories online. I have two favorite trailers to watch to get motivated quickly: Sick, Fat and Nearly Dead (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x9SGWcZwk7c) Hungry for Change (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MvAM97VDE8) Tip #2: Music: We all have some kind of music that permeates your cells and encourages you to move. Sometimes it’s fast paced music to inspire cardio, boxing or dancing or maybe it’s slow and relaxing which might put you in the mood for yoga or meditation. While meditation is not exercise, it can help empty your mind of the excuses you may have around exercise. Tip #3: Having a good exercise plan: Without a customized plan, you may get frustrated really easily if you don’t see the kind of results you are expecting. Even if you already have the motivation, spend the money or time on creating a sound plan. Tip #4: Hypnosis: This is such an easy tool to use every day; it requires only the effort of putting on your headphones and lying down. Hypnosis is one of the fastest ways to change your habits. Tip #5 Get a Buddy: We all need accountability. Take a class, hire a trainer or couch, or create your own group. Need more help? Meet me on November 10th! To register, go to: http://tinyurl.com/9vckgol Editor’s Note: JJ Flizanes, Director of Invisible Fitness, was named best personal trainer in Los Angeles for 2007 by Elite Traveler Magazine and was also one of the six featured trainers in Shape Magazine in 2003. She is the Author of the Amazon.com Best Seller Fit 2 Love: How to Get Physically, Emotionally, and Spiritually Fit to Attract the Love of Your Life and Knack Absolute Abs: Routines for a Fit and Firm Core. She has appeared on NBC, KTLA, CBS and Fox 11 as well as numerous local and national magazines. JJ’s mission is to help men and women feel gorgeous and confident in a bathing suit without starving or killing themselves in the gym.

Cookin’ Corner Snake Pizza By Phoebe Schilla One of the biggest tricks in getting kids to help in the kitchen is to make it enticing for them and for you too. After all, they won't be making dinner for you when they are twelve if you don't get them started when they are young! Snake Pizza is one recipe that we love to make together. It's essentially calzones that you stuff, shape into balls then smoosh together to make a long snake. Mom and Dad can have a sophisticated calzones with roasted cubes of butternut squash, creamy burrata cheese and sage. The kids can have their own version. The best part is the decorating. We paint our snake a brilliant red with tomato paste then give it two black olive circle eyes and a forked salami tongue. This recipe is terrific because you can give your child more responsibility as they grow. Little ones will love to decorate. Older kids can make the pizza dough from scratch and essentially do the entire dinner (salad included) themselves. Good Luck and Bon Appétit! Snake Pizza 1 pkg. of refrigerated pizza dough, or your favorite dough recipe 1 cup of tomato sauce 2-3 cups of shredded cheese—your choice. Assorted fillings: Be creative! We like sautéed spinach, feta, artichokes, mushrooms, sausage, bacon to name a few. Glaze: ¼ cup of tomato paste mixed with ¼ cup of water. Garnishes: Olives for the eyes, a small piece of salami for the tongue Directions: Preheat the oven to 425F 1. Divide the dough up into equal portions. 6 or 7 pieces will make a fine snake. 2. Roll the dough into a circle that is about ¼ inch thick. Brush the circle with tomato sauce, leaving a ¼ inch border and sprinkle with cheese and filling of choice. 3. Gather the border together so that you have a ball. Gently squeeze or roll into a ball. 4. Stack the balls together onto a cookie sheet in a single line. Make sure that they are touching. 5. Brush your snake pizza with the tomato paste glaze. Creative types may want to use food coloring—that works too! 6. Make a face for your snake with black olives and the salami. You can use more black olives to create the elusive spotted snake or stripes of red, yellow and green pepper to make the rare striped snake. 7. Bake at 425F for about 20-25 minutes.

Editor’s Note: Chef Phoebe loved cooking from an early age growing up outside of Portland, Maine. Her mother and aunt were accomplished self-taught cooks who welcomed curious Phoebe into their kitchens. From tapping her own maple syrup from trees in the yard to baking homemade bread, Phoebe learned at an early age about the delicious benefits of whole, natural, seasonal foods. Phoebe lives in San Francisco with her husband and their daughter. In her spare time she enjoys reading cookbooks, traveling, studying yoga practices and, of course, learning about all the latest culinary happenings from around the globe.
