The Organized Family Spring Cleaning Spring cleaning today is not the same as in our mother and grandmothers’ day. Then the house was literally turned inside out with a schedule including deep cleaning and polishing of all furniture, fresh wallpaper, painting, cleaning wood floors, fresh or new slipcovers, and more. If you do not recall all this fuss over winter’s ending, I am sure your elders have not too fond memories. That’s the way it was… “back then.” Yes, Spring may still conger up thoughts of opening the windows and freshening up the house with carpet cleaning and maybe some new paint. If so, go for it with some simple tips to help you “spring” into action. • Open windows to air out each room. While you’re there, quickly clean the window and ledges on the inside. You can plan a later day to tackle the outsides or hire a window cleaning service. • Try dusting or vacuuming under beds and other furniture that usually gets a quick once-over on a regular basis. • A telescoping duster is great for ceiling cobwebs and other high spots. A quick spray of polish on the duster will catch the dust and not just push it around. • Check out the cleaning supplies at your supermarket for great shower, tile, and grout cleaning sprays & solutions. Also, visit a local janitorial supply store for substantial and reasonably priced products. • A swipe of a baby wipe or a spray of window cleaner is great to freshen up sinks & fixtures. Remember to change the kitchen sink sponge daily… yes daily. They can be a breeding ground for bacteria! Toss them into the dish washer or washing machine or zap them in the microwave oven for two minutes. Keep extras on hand. • Keep cleaning supplies under each sink, in a handy plastic caddie, for easy access and quick daily clean-ups. It is easier to clean on the spot when the supplies are handy. Take care to prevent small children from getting into these areas. • Window blinds can be a hassle to clean. A feather duster with a light spray of dusting spray will do well to collect the dust. Or hire a window blinds cleaning service. That should get you started with the “new & easy” spring-cleaning. Now, reward your hard work with some fun in the sun! After all it IS Spring! Parent’s Corner Why Won’t My Kids Listen To Me? HOW do we get our children to listen to us; to follow the boundaries we have set for them? The answer could change your life- listen to them. Children often use ongoing issues to trigger their emotions causing meltdowns at the same time, same place, every single day. An example of this: when your children get furious because they have to go to bed. Nothing has changed, their bedtime routine is exactly the same, and so is their resistance. Depending on how tired we are, this is when parents tend to ‘give in’ to quiet a child’s cries. Any boundary that was set goes out the window, or we hold firm, rigidly ignoring their upset. However, this doesn’t get them to bed any sooner. If we can plan ahead, knowing that our child seems to have particular triggers, we can support them during these moments. Listen as they release any hurts or emotional wounds they may have. Here are a few ideas that you may want to try: Start the morning or bedtime routine a little earlier and then, instead of going about your business while they’re acting out, move in and listen to them. Be willing to listen to their crying or their whining (whatever it looks like to you) and simply be there for them. Let them know that they are safe and it’s ok for them to let these big emotions out. Have you ever noticed that after a big cry you feel relaxed and clear-headed? “Crying is not the hurt itself, it’s the healing of the hurt.” (Patty Wipfler, Hand-in-Hand Parenting). Children have traumas (from birth, illnesses, family stress) lodged in their emotional bank that they need to communicate with someone who loves and cares for them. Who better than you?! By moving toward your child, instead of away from them, they’ll feel safe enough to let these hurts go. Once they’re out they’re out. It may take a few crying spells, it may take a week or two, but once they’re gone the child won’t have a need to use that particular trigger any longer. Children want to cooperate with us, and when they feel connected they’ll be more likely to listen to your requests and work with you. Your warm presence lets them know that you’re on their side, even when you have to say no. Michele Pullo created happycalmchild out of the needs of her own family and friends to have simple, tangible tools to help our children self-regulate their emotions, focus and ease anxiety. She works with both children and their parents through live and virtual classes, talks, webinars, family workshops and a private family program. She’s combined evidence based stress reduction tools with effective parenting techniques to give parents the support they need. Her experience as the mother of a 9yr old with ADD and a spirited 4yr old keeps her in the trenches with you! Michele’s background working with children, teaching Yoga and Dance along with 25 years of study on Stress Reduction Techniques, Movement for Learning and the Mind/ Body Connection helped her create a structured, easy to follow, fun curriculum that gives kids the tools they need while giving parents the results and support they’ve been looking for!

Family Friendly Travel Sydney and Rainforests and Reefs, Oh My!

Australia is more than a fourteen hour flight from LAX, so let’s just get the only negative about travelling there out of the way! One way to finesse that flight, though, is to do a layover in Hawaii, which my family did last December. It was great breaking the trip with a swim in the warm Hawaiian waters before a sunset dinner at Duke’s in Waikiki. The next day after a few more hours of flight, we landed “down under” and soon fell in love with the down-to Earth, friendly Aussies and their adventure loving spirit. Australia, slightly smaller than the lower 48 States, is too big to take on in one family winter break! However, a few days in North Queensland and Sydney can round out a fantastic family vacation, loaded with fun activities for the whole family, while saving the rest of the country for another excuse to go back! The Great Barrier Reef draws water lovers to swim, snorkel or dive in the breathtaking beauty of the world’s largest coral reef. Staying in Cairns gives access to several dive operators and plenty of action-packed water sports (the bumper tube rides and parasailing were my boys’ favorites!). A few hours drive north lies one of the oldest rainforest in the world, the Daintree Rainforest; a World Heritage Site where hiking and zip-lining can be enjoyed while looking out for prehistoric animals (we stumbled on a “cassowary,” one of the largest flightless birds in the world with only 1,200 remaining)! The obvious bonus to visiting Sydney in December is to be part of the New Years’ festivities, however the real family fun is in the meandering bike rides around downtown, the bird’s eye view of the city and the bay while climbing on the Harbor Bridge and boarding a tall ship to usher out the mass exodus of yachts during The Sydney to Hobart Boxing Day (December 26th) yacht race.

10 What’s Up For Kids

May 2015

Climbing up the mast adds another element to the thrill of being on the water amongst the hundreds of yachts jockeying for position before the start line. If the crowds and heat during the December break don’t appeal to you, another ideal window of travel opportunity is to experience “Vivid,” Sydney’s Festival of Light, Music and Ideas, which transforms the city into the most exciting public exhibition in the southern hemisphere (the 2015 dates are May 22nd-June 8th). Because Sydney’s sunlight averages 6 hours during their winter, artists and performers use light as their medium and Sydney becomes an urban art gallery. Australia is so much more than Sydney and the Great Barrier Reef, but it sure is a great place to start and your family will enjoy the adventure and fun, no matter the season!

Healthy Families ADHD Case Study Reported by Dr. Grace Syn, DC Pediatric Wellness Expert In the October 2004 issue of the peerreviewed research publication, the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics (JMPT), comes a case study of a child with ADHD (Attention-Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder),who was helped with chiropractic. The case was of a 5 year old boy who had been diagnosed with ADHD at age 2. The child’s pediatrician prescribed methylphenidate (Ritalin), Adderall, and Haldol for the next 3 years. The combination of drugs was unsuccessful in helping the child. At age 5 the child was brought to a chiropractor to see if chiropractic care would help. The history taken at that time noted that during the child’s birth, there were complications during his delivery process. The results of this trauma and complications resulted in a 4-day stay in the neonatal intensive care unit. The child’s mother reported no other incidence of trauma. The chiropractic examination and x-rays showed noticeable spinal distortion including a reversal of the normal neck curve indicative of subluxations (aka misalignments causing nerve impairment). Chiropractic care was begun and the child’s progress was monitored. According to his mother, positive changes in her son’s general behavior were noticed around the twelfth visit. By the 27th visit the patient had experienced considerable improvement. The child was brought by the mother to the medical doctor for a follow up visit and questioned the usage of the Ritalin. The medical doctor reviewed and examined the child and based on that assessment and his clinical experience, the MD felt that the young boy was no longer exhibiting symptoms associated with ADHD. He then took the boy off the medications that he had been taking for 3 years.

The conclusion of the author of the JMPT case study noted, “The patient experienced significant reduction in symptoms. Additionally, the medical doctor concluded that the reduction in symptoms was significant enough to discontinue the medication. For more information contact: Dr. Grace Syn, DC 310-540-5529 drsyn@synchiropractic.com www.SynChiropractic.com

On Dad’s Watch A Dad’s Tale of Tails by Michael Malgeri Yes, I’m a “Tail-Man”...”Pony” that is. I LUV ‘em! Pony tails are about attitude. I’ve developed a system of tails to compliment the moods of even the most capricious. Here’s what I described to our daughter, who’s a bonafide “Tailer”. The Low Tail – This tail says, “Why do I even have hair!” It begins near the neck, pinched with a worn out scrunchy. If low tails are in fashion, consider short selling stocks. The Pony Tail - At 90° to the Low Tail, the Pony is a dramatic attitude improvement. A baseball cap indicates a fun lovin’ kid. Double points for “Yankee” fans. Side Tail – If this tail covers the shoulder, there’s no energy around. She prefers afternoons with Chamomile tea and poetry. If it floats above the ear, anticipate lopsided kinetic behavior due to asymmetry. Two high side tails are “Pigtails”... she’s 5, go to the park. Fly Tail - Slightly above the Pony, the Fly Tail takes adventure up a notch. Roller blading and snow boarding are pastimes of Fly Tailers. High Tail - At 45° between the Pony and a vertical spike, High Tails ride on girls that like to rock climb, sky dive, spelunk and slam-dunk. These ladies are high achievers, often found in boardroom meetings or competing in the Iditarod. Sky Tail – Sky Tailers could be auditioning for an “I dream of Jeannie” remake, but they’re likely looking for non-stop fun. They should stay indoors in a lightning storm. The Punk Tail - Jutting from the forehead, the Punk is accompanied by a bullring through the nose. This tail appears at 13 saying something’s gone awry. Any other tail is preferred. You’ll wish you could start again with pigtails. So that’s Dad’s Tale of Tails. Remember, “Beware the Punk!”

Along with “On Dad’s Watch” Michael has also written a series of books he calls “Bedtime Stories about Capitalism,” which teaches kids about honest profit making. Visit http://www.kids4biz.com. You can write to him at mmalgeri@kids4biz.com

From The Artbox Grit And Perseverance: Try Try Again! In art class this week our students learned about architecture! They were excited to build and couldn’t wait to get started. As the students began, a few realized that their first attempts didn’t work. A few pieces fell, another piece or two started sliding and other structures toppled over. The comments ranged from “I can’t do this!” to “I’m done” to “Can you do this for me?” What a great opportunity to teach about grit and perseverance! We all get frustrated, even as adults, but going back to the project or whatever we are working on and and making it right, is what “grit” is all about. Giving children opportunities to develop grit and perseverance needs to be moved to the top of our to-do lists. How can we do this? Let’s start with creating time. We all know how precious time is but creating anything, from a work of art to a term paper to math homework, takes time. Making sure you have enough time allows for “re-dos” and that’s where the learning takes place. Learning a new sport also gives kids opportunities to practice, practice, practice – from skateboarding to riding bikes to learning how to pitch. Falling off a board (with helmet and pads of course) or striking out is part of how we learn to push through and succeed. I can guarantee you that with practice, your child will learn how to ride a skate board, throw strikes, or draw a flower. As Thomas Edison said, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” What a poignant quote to think of today. As art class ended, I heard “I did it!” over and over again. I think Thomas Edison would be proud. Allow your kids to develop their “grit” muscle. Helping them less will seem tough at first, but they will figure out most things. Perseverance will become one of the most important parts of their character as they continue to develop a strong sense of self. See you in art class! Lauren Perelmuter President/Founder Art To Grow On Children’s Art Center, Inc. Art To Grow On Children’s Art Center, Inc., brings Art Enrichment Programs, Products, and Services to children ages 18 months –18 years old.
