Letter from the publisher Graduation is in the air. I can hear the song played at all graduations as preschoolers through high schoolers celebrate graduation around the South Bay! I’m celebrating my 3rd and final high school graduation. Yes – congratulations to Chris Alessandra. So proud of you!! And he’s off to adulthood! While it’s a celebration of school graduations, I’ve had a graduation of sorts myself. I briefly referred to it in last month’s publisher’s note. I turned 50 last month. Yes, 50. What a milestone – and it’s the new 30, right?! My mindset is young and my enthusiasm is high. And my body, after shedding 70 pounds over the last 1 ½ years, is feeling better than ever. It’s full of energy and is ready to conquer the world. I’m ready to do things and see things I’ve never done. It’s time for the “bucket list”. But why did I have to wait until 50? I hear it over and over again. I’m too busy, I have no time, I’m juggling too many things, I’m not a priority. STOP! Yes, our kids are a huge priority. Our families, our significant others, our parents, our friends. But when we give, give, give to everyone else and leave nothing for ourselves, we can’t possibly be good for anyone. Do you remember the flight attendant – “put your oxygen mask on first before assisting those around you”. We are now half way through 2015. Did you set “New Year’s” resolutions? How are those going for you? Are you burnt out, overwhelmed and frazzled to the core? It’s time to commit to YOU – to CHOOSE to be present in your life and not watch it flash before your eyes! Carve out some time – even if it’s a few minutes a day for a walk, or better yet, a weekend away. Join me and 100’s of others in the #YESICAN movement sweeping the nation. It’s about taking a stand – for YOU. It’s about making YOU a priority, so that you can be, do and see all that you want, before it’s too late. Joining the community is FREE! So hop on over to www.YesICanWomen.com and watch for special events in the South Bay too to gather and support each other in your journey called life! Happy Summer!

The Organized Family Family Chores Bottom line: children involved in household chores learn to share responsibilities, work within a team and become accountable. What worked well in our home was to first have a meeting of the adults in the home (parents/partners/grandparents, etc.) to set a plan for presenting this household procedure program to the kids and the steps following. This step is crucial! Once the adults are in agreement, a sit-down meeting takes place with the entire family. A list of chores for each child and adult is prepared ahead of the meeting time. Rewards may come at the end of the week when work is successfully fulfilled, or at the month’s end with a special or previously planned reward, or as an individual reward or treat. Having a chore chart also means there is no “forgetting” to do something. Having the chores assigned to specific days of the week or hours of the day can also help. For example: BEFORE SCHOOL Feed the dog. Make your bed. AFTER SCHOOL Set the table for dinner. Take out the trash/recycling. MONDAY/WEDNESDAY/FRIDAY Clean up after the dog. Unload the dishwasher. TUESDAY/THURSDAY: Unload the dishwasher Empty all the wastebaskets. Many lessons can be learned from chores & charts… and the work gets done as well! Parent’s Corner What Type Of Mom Are You? We all had visions of how we’d parent when the time came. I clearly remember saying things like, “I would never let my kid do THAT!” It makes me shudder to think of the time my child did THAT (and more than once). From the time we utter those dreaded words to the time we actually have to figure it out, so much has happened. We’ve read books, listened to friends and lived life as a real-live parent. All these experiences change our perspective and our choices. So, which parent did you end up becoming? Are you the mom that brings homemade “Sprinkles” style cupcakes (that took three days to decorate) to school? Would your child’s Halloween costume be featured in Martha Stewart Magazine? Or did you swing by Von’s to pick up a package of whatever is left before the bell rang, and maybe you picked up your son’s Halloween costume while you were there? Or do you fluctuate between the two? I try to do a little of both. I made a Dinosaur birthday cake for my son one year that sloped from one side to the other. So, I put my plastic mountain on the high side and had lava float down the cake to the pond I made with icing. (I MADE A POND OUT OF ICING! Genius!) More often than not, I’m the one swinging by the grocery store last-minute. So, I guess you could say I’ve experienced both sides of the “Mom Spectrum”. Luckily, we don’t have to choose which type we are. The first mom uses her cupcakes to show her child how much she loves them by spending her time patiently making those suckers beautiful. She may even enjoy it! Creating these masterpieces could have been something that she dreamed about before her child was born. The second mom may feel that she would rather spend her time with her child playing outside, instead of baking. She chooses to show her love in a way that suits her. The rest of us are just trying to love our kids the best way we know… with a Party City Halloween costume here and a Dinosaur cake there. So, what type of mom are you? I’d venture to guess - the loving kind. Michele Pullo created happycalmchild out of the needs of her own family and friends to have simple, tangible tools to help our children self-regulate their emotions, focus and ease anxiety. She works with both children and their parents through live and virtual classes, talks, webinars, family workshops and a private family program. She’s combined evidence based stress reduction tools with effective parenting techniques to give parents the support they need. Her experience as the mother of a 9yr old with ADD and a spirited 4yr old keeps her in the trenches with you! Michele’s background working with children, teaching Yoga and Dance along with 25 years of study on Stress Reduction Techniques, Movement for Learning and the Mind/ Body Connection helped her create a structured, easy to follow, fun curriculum that gives kids the tools they need while giving parents the results and support they’ve been looking for!

Healthy Families Create a New Fitness Legacy In our last article, we introduced you to the concept of identifying what story has been running your life in the area of fitness, health and self-care. Once you know the story you’ve been running, you now have all the power to create a new legacy to pass down to your children. What messages would you ideally want them to internalize about health and fitness? How do you envision them living out this ideal healthy version of themselves? The first step in creating this new legacy is getting clear about your own vision for yourself. We suggest writing out a new story that empowers and motivates you to make fitness and health a priority. One that creates possibility and busts through your limiting beliefs about yourself. For example, Coach Khatija’s old story was about needing to sacrifice her time for her kids as a single mom and having too much responsibility and not enough time to make fitness a priority. Her new story is much more empowering and goes like this: “I am a capable, determined and resourceful woman and mother, dedicated to myself and to my children. In making my health and well being a priority, I am modeling self-care for my children and an example of how to live a whole and full life. I know there are creative ways to integrate a commitment to my health and fitness.” Can you hear all the possibility in that new story? Once your new story is written, it’s time to let it inform your actions in life by incorporating more fitness into your daily routine that can include your children and ultimately demonstrate for them the importance of leading a healthy, active life. Through working with numerous families, we have discovered many ways to do this. If you are interested in running but find it difficult to make the time to get out and do it, one suggestion is to take your kids to a local track and let them play on the field while you run the track. Or head down to the beach and have them ride bikes or scooter alongside you while you run. If you are new to running, we suggest starting off with short run/walk intervals that you gradually increase over time.

Family Friendly Travel Alaska Breaching Whales, a Sports Court and Fine Dining: Ingredients for a Memorable Alaskan Cruise! Last summer my husband and I took our three boys on our first family cruise to Alaska. My oldest was going off to college and we stole one week of his last few days of summer. Our younger boys were 12 and 16, so we were determined to find a trip to satisfy all. We booked the gorgeous Celebrity Solstice seven-night Alaska Sawyer Glacier Cruise because the itinerary worked for us and also because there was an abundance of kid/teen activities while on board. The shore excursions would immerse us all in what the Alaskan frontier has to offer, The Celebrity Solstice dazzled us as we boarded on day one. Our boys disappeared as they were magnetically pulled to the kid/teen zone and outdoors sports court. Quickly adapting to their absence, as we knew they were active and content, we enjoyed a slower pace while balcony reading with the backdrop of the Pacific Northwest shores and then being entertained at the Martini bar where the bartender mastered cascading martini pyramids! The ship’s ten restaurants offered an array of epicurean delights. This made us all anticipate dinner hour when the boys availed us of their daily details. While the food was often creative and delicious, the service was attentive and fun, even engrossing us in their magic tricks. When not enjoying the haute cuisine, the boys were able to go freely to the multi-station buffet, consuming multiple bowls of ice cream and a lot of fruit, or so they claimed! The shore excursions made the trip extra special. In Ketchikan, we enjoyed a hokey lumberjack show and an unforgettable day of fishing as we caught twenty-four salmon which we shipped home. We biked in verdant Skagway, zipped around in a high-speed boat searching for wildlife in Juneau and strolled through Butchcart gardens in Victoria, British Columbia. The highlight, though, was bearing witness to the breaching humpback and killer whales in Juneau!

While we waited anxiously for the next breach, I couldn’t help but gaze at my oldest, counting the days before college. While steadying his binoculars, surrounded by his brothers and youngsters of all ages, I thought of his fleeting childhood and how much this trip pulled out the inner child of all of us. That night while dining at one of the three Specialty restaurants, we toasted to our Alaskan memories before heading off to our respective corners of the ship; the sports court and the martini bar, something for everybody! On Dad’s Watch Me and Chad by Michael Malgeri Recently, I attended an intimate high school wind ensemble concert. We sat on stage listening to solos and duets. Our daughter and her BFF brought down the house in a superb flautist finale. A follow-up was stopping for frozen yogurt. She no longer messes her face with strawberry ice cream but it’s still a cool event for a Dad. At the counter, a young man said, “Hey! Twice today!” I was taken aback, but flattered this cool dude had mistaken me for a “bud.” Perhaps he thought I was his Dentist, rather than an early morning wave rider. “I work at Starbucks too.” “OH! You have a different outfit,” which was a lame excuse. My daughter had taken an interest so I introduced her as my sister, and got an elbow, but drew a chuckle from my new pal. “What’s your name?” “Chad.” That figured. It was Chad or Jason. I considered responding with, “I’m ‘The Mike-STER’,” but said, “I’m Michael.” I was about to ask if he wanted to “hang out” but given he could have been my grandchild, I came to my senses. Best to commend him on his ambition and say, “see you at SBucks!” HOWEVER, fantasies die-hard so in the car I became “Jeff Spicoli.” “AWLL RIYGHT DUDE! So AWESOME seeing my bud Chad! He must be making SEEEERIIIIIOUUSSSS COIN working TWO JOBS! Can’t wait to ride a few tasty waves with him in the A.M.” After a dozen eye rolls and a few, “OH GAWDS!” she rewarded me with a slow head shake and a charity smirk and said, “He’s cute!” “HEY!” I said, getting her ready for a “You’re only 14!” lecture. But I surprised her with, “Chad’s MY BUD!” We laughed and went home. See you guys next time. Along with “On Dad’s Watch” Michael has also written a series of books he calls “Bedtime Stories about Capitalism,” which teaches kids about honest profit making. Visit http://www.kids4biz.com. From The Artbox The Xbox vs. The Cardboard Box The use of electronics in our household is a hot topic to say the least. I tend to be pretty strict, feeling it is important to set limits. I have been called harsh and mean, but that is part of being a parent. Stay strong I say! I grew up with very hands on play – we rode bikes, roller skated, had swim parties, sleep overs, and played outside all day. My mother actually had a bell she would ring to tell us to come home for dinner knowing we were somewhere on the street at someone’s house playing. The “dinner bell” is actually still in her home today and I love it. Today, as we all know, “play” can look very different. A few years ago, a friend’s son came over with ipad in hand and I was stunned. We have basketball, bikes, scooters, skateboards, foosball and more. Wow. Did I miss something? My job as a parent changed. I now include “electronics manager” to my ever growing resume. Keeping the balance between “play” and “electronic play” is what we need to be aware of. Summer is coming which means more free time. Free time is a great thing for a child so make sure you have lots of balls, sports equipment, art supplies, and spaces to play. When they pick up their devices, and they will, designate a clear set time for that too. Maybe one day there will be so many children playing again in the street we will all have to get “dinner bells” to remind them to come home to eat. See you in art class!
