July 2015

Letter from the publisher Summer is in full swing. May grey and June gloom are gone – and it’s fun in the sun! I was reminded recently to put on that sunscreen! As a south bay native, I spent my childhood at Torrance beach and sailing out of King Harbor. I “tanned” until I burned – and then burned some more. I know we are all diligent now to put the sunscreen on our kids, but how about ourselves? And, more importantly, those skin checks at the dermatologist. For years I’ve had those “pre-cancerous” blips on my face, but recently a basal cell cancer was found on my back. Caught early, it was easily removed. But if I wasn’t actively getting checked, I would have never seen it. As parents, we are so busy working, driving the kids around and juggling schedules we often forget to make time for us! Our annual check-ups are just as important as the annual check-ups for our kids. So moms (and dads), make that time. Schedule your appointments now for when the kids go back to school and stay up on your health! Prevention is 100% easier than the alternatives! This is our final summer camp issue for 2015! You’ll find some great last minute options here in the South Bay. From surfing to horseback riding and so much more, your options are endless! You can also check our online directory at www.whatsupforkids.com for even more options. This issue is packed with great articles and tips. Keep it handy and refer to the calendar when you’re on the go!

Happy 4th of July!

The Organized Family Family Travel Tips… And Stress Relievers. School is out and a car trip is in the planning, including checking for deals online: coupons, AAA, saving money on hotels, meals, etc. Planning can save time, money and stress!! Helpful tips: 1. Before you pack the car, consider possible situations. A child’s lunch box is the perfect size for an emergency medical kit and will store under the seat. Also, a few zipper plastic bags for motion sickness or to hold ice for an injury. On a long trip, renew prescriptions before leaving. Also include family medical information and contact phone numbers. 2. Audio books, music or DVD equipment could save the day when youngsters get fussy or adults become bored with the scenery or night travel. Earphones would be appreciated when tastes in entertainment are varying. 3. Consider having kids each keep a travel diary. The older ones can write and the younger ones can draw pictures of things they saw or experienced. They can document neat sites, funny things that happened, gas mileage, eateries, etc. Looking back on travel journals from family trips are sometimes funny and always special. 4. Baby wipes are handy as a freshener after pumping gas, or enjoying a snack. An empty tissue box holds about 8 plastic bags for collecting trash… to be disposed of at the next stop. Assign this task to a family member. 5. Bring along a favorite blanket or toy to use at nap time for tired or fussy passengers. They also come in handy in hotel rooms where nothing is familiar and the bed is not like theirs at home. 6. Keep an information folder in the car for easy access of maps, etc. Have an older child be responsible for adding information as you travel; restaurant cards, menus, maps, etc. Phone ahead to confirm a room or dinner reservation to avert problems when late arrival is inevitable. Charge cell phones and cameras before leaving home. Bring along the chargers.

7. Leave an itinerary of your travels & cell numbers with a relative or neighbor in case of an emergency. Stop newspapers and mail delivery or have someone retrieve. Piled up mail or papers is a clue the house is empty. 8. Rest stops are a great time to stretch, exercise and burn off energy before returning to the car. Upon re-entering the car, take a quick inventory: is everyone present, equipment & toys on board, nothing left in restaurants, on the car roof or trunk, seat belts in place, doors locked? Now, on to the next attraction. Using these travel tips can not only save time, energy, money and frustration, but can lead to a fun experience for all. A car trip is as fun as you make it. So get on the road and have a great trip! Š Family travel Ann Gambrell

Parent’s Corner Push Pause On Summer “Push PAUSE on Summer and Make Memories While You Can!” You may not want to wish school was back in session quite yet; so this is an excellent time to make memories with your kids whether you’re a stay at home or working mom (and let’s face it, we’re all “working” moms!). The best memories happen organically. A spontaneous trip for “Fro-Yo”, the last-minute decision to camp in the backyard, or a family pillow fight can bring smiles and laughter that you and your kids will remember for years to come. I don’t want to be “Debbie Downer”, but we only have a limited number of summers with our kids. A big summer vacation is awesome and simple. Connected moments will enhance a special trip and make it even more memorable for your family. Unplug the electronics once you’ve arrived to maximize family bonding and use some of that time to find out what your kids are enjoying the most about the trip. Down-time at home can also provide numerous opportunities for quality time. Not sure where to begin? Follow your child’s lead. Join them for a TV show that they enjoy. For you, watching “Sponge Bob” may make going to the dentist sound appealing, but to your child it is big time fun. Fake it ‘till you make it! Ask your child what his favorite character is. He may look at you like your crazy, but trust me, he will be thrilled you’re interested! Engage him in conversation at his level, “What is a Krabby Pattie?!” When you see his eyes light up at seeing your interest, it will all be worth it. Scoop up these precious summer moments while you can. WARNING! Connection with your child may cause cooperation, relaxation and laughter! Proceed at your own risk! Michele Pullo created happycalmchild out of the needs of her own family and friends to have simple, tangible tools to help our children self-regulate their emotions, focus and ease anxiety. She works with both children and their parents through live and virtual classes, talks, webinars, family workshops and a private family program. She’s combined evidence based stress reduction tools with effective parenting techniques to give parents the support they need. Her experience as the mother of a 9yr old with ADD and a spirited 4yr old keeps her in the trenches with you! Michele’s background working with children, teaching Yoga and Dance along with 25 years of study on Stress Reduction Techniques, Movement for Learning and the Mind/ Body Connection helped her create a structured, easy to follow, fun curriculum that gives kids the tools they need while giving parents the results and support they’ve been looking for!

Healthy Families Family Fitness Goals Setting goals sometimes can make us cringe. Sometimes it turns out be just another thing on our to do list that creates a feeling of stress and overwhelm. As busy mothers, we really get that. So let’s redefine it so that our minds can lessen resistance to the concept. Goals give us an aim and a direction. They point to where we’d like to go. The goal that gives us aim and direction is always there and helps us get back on track. Without a vision of where we are going, we end up going nowhere. So how can we set goals that give us a vision, an aim and a direction and that are actually doable? We are including a way to easily set goals with an example. We recommend setting small goals that set you and your family up for success. Include your kids in the goal setting process so that they will be invested in their own health as well. If, for example, you would like to be more active as a family, we recommend as a first step sitting down with your family and brainstorming a fitness goal. Let’s say you decide as a family on a goal of run/walking a local 5K race for charity. The next step is to write your goal in specific, measurable and realistic terms. That might sound like: Our goal is to do run/walk intervals to complete a 5K race in three months. Next, it’s important to outline three action steps that will support you in reaching your goal. In this example, three action steps might be: 1) Find a local 5K 2) Create or find online a training plan that incorporates run/walk intervals 3) Schedule a place and time two or three times per week to train with your family for at least 30 minutes.

12 What’s Up For Kids

July 2015

Finally, get out and enjoy the journey (and all the hills and valleys) to reaching your family fitness goal. If you get stuck along the way, remember that its not perfection you’re going for, it’s the persistence of getting back on the horse when you fall off. With this kind of goal setting, your family wins in more than one way. Not only are you getting fit together as a family unit but you are also imparting a valuable life skill in teaching your kids how to set and achieve goals. Commit to 5K is a 10-week program that combines life coaching with run coaching to ensure that participants reach their goal--Crossing the finish line at their first 5K race and establishing healthy, positive internal and external habits. More information can be found at www.facebook.com/committi5K Khatija Dadabhoy leads the life coaching portion of the program. She is a transformational counselor and coach who holds a MA in counseling. She specifically works with women who are ready to experience their inner revolution!! Kirsten Bell leads the running and physical fitness portion of the program. She is a certified running and triathlon coach. She’s been helping women kickstart and reach their fitness goals since 2010.

Family Friendly Travel Take Me to the River European luxury river cruises want families now! A booming niche in the travel industry, river cruising, up until recently has been predominantly an adult getaway, but that is rapidly changing. Itineraries have sprung up crafted specifically for children and departure dates are designed to take advantage of summer and winter holidays. The European rivers are now great options for family vacations.

On board the luxury riverboats, capacity is often well under 200 guests, not thousands as can be on ocean liners, creating a more intimate experience. With triple and quadruple cabins, some interconnecting staterooms and suites with pullout couches, families can be well accommodated. Children happily enjoy the outdoors on the sun decks which often offer a plunge pool, putting green or a jogger’s track. Young cruisers enjoy kid-friendly menus as well as programs to engage them in the culture of the region such as a cooking class mastering a Viennese strudel or a German class before a walking tour of Strasbourg. Uniworld even provides a dedicated Family Host to oversee the kids’ activities. The shore excursions thrill the young cruisers, such as riding bikes through the countryside, visiting a saltmine (I am fondly remembering my own boys trying to lick the salted walls of the mines!) or enjoying the world-famous Lipizzaner horse show (Vienna). Tauck Bridges offers a family cruise along the Rhone River, where families can meet French cowboys in the Camargue region who take them on breathtaking horseback trails. Even museums are guaranteed enjoyable outings for children as they are swept up in scavenger hunts amongst masterpieces and artifacts while their parents are left to linger and lose themselves in the details of art and history.

Disney will be focusing on cultural experiences custom designed for children. Luxury cruise ships are offering family trips departing in the summer and winter school breaks. These itineraries will guarantee a highly personalized vacation aimed to please a wide range of ages. The best part is that bags are unpacked only once and all the trip details have already been arranged! On Dad’s Watch The Third People by Michael Malgeri

There’s a parental pastime that I’ve enjoyed immensely and one that’s used less often as our kids march through the years. Handing out unreasonable punishments has been... no, come on now! What’s given me so much pleasure, and what I sorely miss, is talking to our children in the 3rd person. “Daddy’s home!” “Daddy’s gonna fix it.” “Daddy’s gonna make it better,” and of course, my favorite. “Daddy loves you!” Speaking in the 3rd person to a child has a way of wrapping you both in an unbreakable bond... a bond that remains and grows stronger long after the tender pastime fades. Perhaps I can blame the school system for teaching them grammar. Nowadays, you can hear me say, “Daddy’s gonna knock your block off,” to a rambunctious teen. However, I don’t hesitate, once in a while, to swap in a “Daddy” when we say our loving “good nights.” There is a consolation. Our puppy will always be a child, no matter how old he gets and how much the rapid wag of his tail wanes. I spend a fair amount of time rubbing his head, holding him tight and tossing 3rd person phrases at him as he scurries with excitement...”Daddy’s gonna give you a treat.” “You wanna play with Daddy?” and of course. “Daddy loves you!” He’s such fun. But even though the times must change... and even though I have a puppy to preserve my silly sentiments... I want our children to know, “Daddy will ALWAYS love you!” Along with “On Dad’s Watch” Michael has also written a series of books he calls “Bedtime Stories about Capitalism,” which teaches kids about honest profit making. From The Artbox Curiosity! It’s More Than Just Asking A Question One of my favorite stories involves my youngest son being asked “how old are you?” He said, “six, and how hold are you?” The gentleman answered, “57”. The group of adults laughed and commented how great it was for him to ask the question with such honesty and true curiosity. Curiosity leads to so many things: we discover our world, we discover others, and most importantly we discover things about ourselves. How do we keep curiosity in the forefront of our children’s lives? We all see it when our little ones are young: How does this work daddy? Why is that blue? Why is he crying mommy? I have seen firsthand in our art classes that as our students get older, questioning becomes less. So what can we do to ensure our children grow up as curious adults who seek answers and discovery? Let’s take the time to listen to our children with whatever they may ask. This really paves the way for confidence in “the asking”. Questions and trying to find the answer leads to dialogue, conversation and communication- Critical Life Essential Skills! The attention we can give our children when they ask questions can be life changing. Trust is deepened, personal acknowledgment is embedded and the confidence to go out in the world as “curiosity seekers” will become second nature. We need people to ask questions as our world becomes more complex, busier and faster. Let’s take time this summer to create enriching conversations with our children answering those questions will lay the ground work for our children to ask away as they become seekers themselves. Happy Summer - See you in art class! Dry Pro

Waterproof Cast Covers

Last summer I ended up in a cast for a short period of time. Showers – well, that was tough. Swimming, out of the question. I can’t imagine summer time with a child in a cast and their desire to play in the pool or ocean! DryPro waterproof cast covers will allow your children to jump in the lake and pool at summer camp, or simply take a long-awaited shower without fear of damaging their cast. The vacuum seal, waterproof technology is patented and created by a doctor. It is the most advanced and effective protective gear for medical device wearers available on the market today. Once DryPro is properly applied over a cast, the cast can be fully submerged underwater without the possibility of leakage. A great product for anyone with prosthetic legs and those who wear longterm medical devices, such as PICC lines too. Starting at $35.95; www.drycorp.com.

Just Mayo Hampton Creek Foods

As you may know, I made some massive changes in my “food” lifestyle this past year – including dairy free, soy free, etc. So When Hampton Creek reached out about reviewing their new product, I jumped! Just Mayo is a great healthier mayo option, perfect for summer BBQ’s! It’s non-GMO, gluten-free, soy free, dairyfree, lactose-free, and naturally cholesterol-free. Choose from original, sriracha, chipotle and garlic spreads- perfect burger toppings. Excellent to use in recipes too, including Hampton Creek’s own French Onion Dip, Chipotle Carrot Salad to Sweet Potato Salad, Asian Coleslaw, Mediterranean Pasta Salad and much more. I tested out the chipotle flavor with deviled eggs. Yum! And I requested a few recipes from them as well! Hampton Creek set out to pioneer healthier food options that are also affordable for everyone. Just Mayo is available nationally at Safeway, Whole Foods Market, Target and select Costco locations.
