Pulse . . . Touching Lives Our 2009 Annual Report “Pulse” is dedicated to YOU … those who have made a difference in our lives through your generosity, patience and compassion.

Inhale … exhale … and take a moment to reflect on life and just how precious it is. As we look back upon 2009 at what Maui Memorial Medical Center Foundation has been able to accomplish, it fittingly reminds us of the power of philanthropy – the lifeblood of our community. Because of you, our generous donors and community stakeholders, we were able to purchase state-of-the-art, life-saving equipment and supplies for Maui Memorial Medical Center, help fund health-related programs within our community, and to support our clinical staff with ongoing educational training. Each effort has contributed to the reaching of important milestones, part of our hospital’s masterful vision of quality healthcare that embraces all our families. We could not have done all that we did without you!

From our hearts we thank you,

To those who have made a difference in our lives through your generosity, patience and perseverance, MAHALO. a Message from the CEO Maui Memorial Medical Center (MMMC) celebrated many major achievements during 2009. We hope you will enjoy reading about some of these milestones in this annual report. Our work toward continuous improvement in many areas was supported, and in some instances made possible, by the MMMC Foundation. As always, this integral and key association has allowed us to improve patient care in our ongoing efforts to be the Center of Excellence for healthcare on Maui. Among the highlights – we’ve made preparations for the new full service cardiovascular line which will be fully functional in fall 2010. With the addition of two interventional cardiologists, two non-invasive cardiologists and an invasive cardiologist we can now begin providing the important treatments here on island that save critical time in treating heart patients. In the meantime, our cardiac surgeon has been providing open-heart and other related surgeries as we gear up with the new team. Our onsite helipad is nearly finished to coincide with the start-up of these services and will be a key factor in the success of our program. MMMC Foundation’s donation of $420,000 designated for the cardiovascular program played a pivotal role in keeping the program moving forward. Funding was designated primarily for the infrastructure upgrades and equipment necessary to the heart program. I would like to extend my sincere appreciation for your support of the MMMC Foundation. It is through your generosity that we are able to continue to provide the quality healthcare services that our Maui’s families need and deserve. We look forward to continuing to care for you and your family for generations to come…..as we are all part of this wonderful Maui `ohana.

Sincerely,

Wesley Lo

Mark Oreck

“...So he gave to his last friends

When Lahaina resident Mark Oreck passed away on September 29, 2007, he left a legacy, one founded on the highest principles of volunteerism and compassion.

For nearly 20 years, Mark

volunteered for MMMC’s Emergency Department and touched the lives of patients and staff through his dedication, generosity and compassion. Upon his passing, he bequeathed his entire estate, including all assets and real estate, to the MMMC Foundation. Mark Oreck spent 20 years of his life volunteering over 4,800 hours in the ER department at Maui Memorial Medical Center. He recognized that “life is precious” and being that Maui was his home, he wanted to ensure that continued support of Maui Memorial will continue. “Our Foundation is extremely humbled and grateful for this gift bestowed to us by Mark Oreck,” said

The ones who treated him The caregivers who helped him In his last journey to his eterne’ They were thankful his things would help others Help this Foundation in their mission to volunteer, to help, to care...”

Ululani Correa, MMMC Foundation executive director. “His relationship with the hospital staff and his ability to bring comfort to patients and their families is a testament to the person that he was, giving so much of himself to help others. Through his living legacy, Mark Oreck will always be remembered.”

Giving Hearts} Living legacies that leave us breathless C. Bruce Staiger

C. Bruce & Anne R. Staiger Endowment

Twenty years ago, New Jersey natives Bruce and Anne Staiger had the foresight to make an extraordinary gift specifically for cardiovascular services at Maui Memorial Medical Center. Preceded by the passing away of his wife Anne, in 2005 upon his death, he bequeathed to Maui Memorial $305,000 of which a portion will establish the C. Bruce & Anne R. Staiger Endowment Fund through the MMMC Foundation to ensure funds for cardiovascular services will be held in perpetuity. “The timing of receiving this generous gift is unbelievable” said MMMC’s CEO Wesley Lo. “We’re implementing cardiovascular procedures here at Maui Memorial Medical Center that will enhance the quality of life for our community and those patients that are having to seek treatment off-island at a significantly higher cost and inconvenience to their families. We are so thankful and grateful that the Staiger’s were philanthropic and visionaries to identify cardiovascular as the program to support with this gift.”

At Home with Rose Royce What better reason to host a party than to raise money for charity. On June 4, 2009, communitarian Rose Royce invited her closest friends and neighbors to her Wailea home for a special evening. Besides enjoying fabulous food and camaraderie, the 50 guests also had an opportunity to hear MMMC Foundation Board member and Gynecologist Dr. Colleen Inouye talk about MMMC’s need for state-ofthe-art endoscopic equipment. To date, this fundraising challenge has raised over $75,000, giving even more reason to party!

In Memory of Lynne Chow Lynne Chow was a golf merchandise sales representative, mother, golfer and huge supporter of junior golf who lost a fierce battle with breast cancer earlier this year at the age of 51. She was also a dear friend to the staff at Wailea Golf Club. In her memory, Wailea Golf Club teamed up with Tehama and Imperial, popular golf lines that Lynne represented, to conduct a fundraiser that will help to cover costs of mammogram screenings at MMMC. The merchandise was sold at the Wailea Golf Club and a total of $2,000 was raised and donated to the MMMC Foundation for this purpose. “We’re happy to be able to support Maui Memorial in Lynne’s name, to help save the lives of other women in our community,” said Anne Takabuki, Wailea Golf President and General Manager.  “I know Lynne would have wanted that.”

Judy Susuki’s Fundraiser On Saturday, October 17, 2009, a fundraising event to benefit MMMC Foundation was held at the Bluffs of Maui Lani residence of Judy Susuki. Guests enjoyed an exquisite evening of live music, fabulous cuisine, and a Live and Silent Auction which raised over $5,000 in charitable donations for MMMC’s Pediatrics Department. “Our keiki are the bright future of our community,” said Judy Susuki. “And what we do to make a difference in their lives will be returned tenfold in the good health and prosperity for our island.”

Mercedes-Benz Championship On January 4-11, 2009, golf’s best players converged on Kapalua’s Plantation Course for the PGA Tour’s season-opening event. While avid spectators from around the globe were treated to a showcase of golf, it was charity that emerged again as the real winner of this tournament of champions. Kapalua Maui Charities’ contribution to MMMC Foundation will provide needed medical equipment and supplies and fund various health-related programs in our community. Our heartfelt mahalo goes out to our many Foundation volunteers and to Kapalua Maui Charities for their generous kokua.

Wawae Ola - Ola Ola (Healthy Legs - Healthy Life) On Saturday, August 29, residents island-wide got a wake up call thanks to MMMC’s Heart, Brain & Vascular Department’s Peripheral Arterial Disease (P.A.D.) screenings. Through the support of MMMC Foundation, the screenings were offered free to the public. Hospital staff, with the help of 24 students from Maui Community College’s nursing program, screened a total of 135 participants. Of the total who participated, 37 people tested positive for P.A.D. and will be further monitored by their physicians. Individuals with P.A.D. are at greater risk for heart attack, stroke and loss of limbs; and the majority have no symptoms. For more information on P.A.D., visit www.AmericanHeart.org. 1st Annual Aloha Cherry Truffle Challenge

On October 4, 2009, the inaugural Aloha Cherry Truffle Challenge was held at the Maui County Fair. Students from Baldwin, Maui, Lahainaluna & Seabury high schools honed their culinary skills using Roselani Ice Cream’s decadent Aloha Cherry Truffle flavor and brought awareness to all the participants about the early detection and prevention of breast cancer. Proceeds from tasting samples were sold to the public that benefited MMMC Foundation’s breast cancer awareness fund and will be used to help pay for mammograms for women that are either underinsured or have no medical insurance.

Foodland Gives Aloha Foodland’s Annual Community Matching Gifts Program, “Give Aloha,” gave back once again to Maui’s non-profits. In September, MMMC Foundation received 100% of donations made at check-out plus Foodland’s matching funds. A big Mahalo to Foodland and their customers for your ongoing support of our community.

Setting the Pace } Purchases for MMMC raise the bar on giving Wireless EKG for Maui County Ambulances In March 2009, all 12 ambulances on Maui, Lanai and Molokai were fitted with a state-of-the-art wireless EKG system thanks to a generous donation from The Florence Foundation. “From the moment a person suffers a heart attack, minutes can mean the difference between life and death,” said Wesley Lo, CEO of Maui Memorial Medical Center. “These devices enable paramedics to transmit diagnostic-quality EKG’s via the internet to the hospital prior to arrival. Its invaluable data is helping Maui Memorial save the lives of heart attack patients.” Sandra and David Florence of The Florence Foundation

Danh Richardson (Mobile Intensive Care Technician) and Steven Rossi (Emergency Medical Technician) demonstrate the EKG system in one of Maui County’s ambulances

“We are very fortunate to have true communitarians like the Florence Foundation who share our belief that life is precious,” said Lani Correa, MMMC Foundation Executive Director. “These EKG devices will continue to make a profound impact on the quality of life for our families. It’s a true testament to the power of philanthropy and giving back to one’s community.”

One man’s race benefits MMMC Behavioral Health Division Dr. Jason Andrus, MD, Medical Director for MMMC’s Behavioral Health, is a cycling enthusiast and a man with a cause. On August 23, 2009, he participated in the “Cycle to the Sun,” a grueling 36-mile, uphill cyclist race to the summit of Haleakala, to bring awareness to behavioral health and his department’s work. Over $3,500 was raised to purchase needed equipment and supplies for this important hospital unit that is committed to providing a safe, stable and healthy environment along with passionate and contemporary care for patients Dr. Jason Andrus

with psychiatric needs.

State-of-the-Art Medication Cart The Maui North Department of MMMC is the proud recipient of a state-of-the-art medication cart, thanks to a heartfelt donation by the Mike and Eve Green family through the MMMC Foundation.  The mobile desk from which staff can administer medications and document patient care, allows the RN to spend more time at the bedside and less time at the nurses The Green family (Jessica, Eve, Sydney, Mike) and Maui North’s nurse manager Mary McCarey, RN with the new medication cart

station. “Healthcare truly begins at home, and our community can help to make a difference by contributing funds towards specific needs that benefit our hospital’s patients,” said Eve Green, Esq., MMMC Foundation’s new Board President (who also holds a nursing degree).  “A donation to our Foundation is a philanthropic gift that keeps on giving.”

MPS5 Transport with Recorder When Sterlin and Kristina Ibrom visited Maui in late 2008, it would mark the beginning of an incredible journey, where faith, love, family and technology would change their lives forever. Soon after arriving, Kris fell into a coma after suffering an aneurysm and was immediately rushed to MMMC where a medical team gave 200% in making Kris well again… and she did. One year later, the grateful couple presented MMMC’s Haleakala South staff with the latest mobile MP5 Transport with recorder which records patient’s vitals. It was a piece of equipment that Sterlin remembered all too well, having kept a vigil by his wife’s side throughout her recovery. “We’ve experienced services from some of the biggest hospitals on the mainland who offer the latest technology Kris and Sterlin Ibrom

and treatments, so too does Maui Memorial,” said Sterlin. “However, it is the people of Maui Memorial and their caring of their patients as if we were family that truly makes this facility bar none.”

When MMMC requested two hand-held Pulse Oximeters for their Haleakala East Department, it was E.R. doctor Dr. Jenwei Luu and wife My Thi Do, Quality Specialist at MMMC; who stepped up to the plate with these purchases. This medical device measures the oxygen saturation of a patient’s blood and is of critical importance in emergency medicine. “Donations that are earmarked for equipment purchases fulfill a specific need that benefits our patients,” said Ululani Correa, MMMC Foundation Executive Director. “Our deepest gratitude to Dr. Luu and My for serving as role models for those who give back to our community.”

FOUNDATION PURCHASES 2009

New beds for OB Department Moms who give birth at MMMC are now resting comfortably thanks to a donation by MMMC Foundation. A total of 22 brand new, state-of-the-art patient beds, at a cost of nearly $118,000, were installed in the Obstetrics Unit replacing OB Department beds, many of which were 8-10 years old. In the past three years, MMMC Foundation has invested more than $155,000 towards the purchase of state-of-the-art equipment for this busy OB Department. In 2009, 1,891 babies were born at MMMC, the 4th busiest in state.

Jana Malia Joyo Bui (MMMC OB nurse manager) with Dr. Colleen Inouye (MMMC Foundation and Gynecologist)

In memory of Fran A. Buese In 2009, MMMC lost a very special coworker, friend and communitarian - Frances Buese. As a dedicated 17-year employee she worked in ICU, the Recovery Room and Surgicenter; yet it was her love of teaching that continues to be remembered. Upon her death, Fran’s family established the “Frances A. Buese Memorial Fund” through MMMC Fran Buese

Foundation, that will provide financial assistance to the nurses at MMMC for continuing education. “This Fund is a fitting memorial to someone who has touched the lives of her colleagues and patients through her love of teaching,” said Heather Floyd, Pre/Post Operative Nurse Manager at MMMC. “She is greatly missed.”

Heartfelt gifts for Malama Pu`uwai Maui Memorial’s cardiovascular program Malama Pu`uwai (Take Care of your Heart) received a funding boost through MMMC Foundation, thanks to community-minded stakeholders. in the areas of heart attacks, heart failure, and pneumonia, along with infection prevention for surgical patients. Medical staff, nursing, and other clinical and non-clinical departments have been working hard to improve our level of compliance with these standards. The committee’s scrutiny has yielded most encouraging results. In heart attack situations, the average score the hospital has received as recently as the fourth quarter of 2009 was 100%, as compared to its score of 78% in the first quarter of 2007. In heart failure situations, scores within that same time frame improved from 64% to 97%. By implementing an ongoing practice of accountability and reporting to the board, hospital administration and staff receive the message that their efforts at ensuring a quality experience for all patients is a priority which we will always support. The committee is proud that we have such caring, compassionate, and well-trained professionals at Maui Memorial, and we want them to know that we place a high premium on their efforts and we greatly appreciate all that they do for our patients.

Maui Regional Board

MMMC became the first neighbor island hospital to perform open heart surgery in September 2009. In 2010, MMMC hired five additional cardiologists, which paves the way for a complete cardiovascular program, due to become a reality in the latter part of 2010. We broke ground for the construction of a helipad at the hospital, as part of the overall program for rapid transport of cardiac patients. Valuable time saved means better outcomes for cardiac and other medical emergencies. Coupled with the most advanced stroke therapy program in the state, the new cardiovascular service line will create a Center of Excellence here on Maui, providing the very best care for our residents and visitors. As a result of the this cardiac growth, in October 2009 MMMC began performing regular catheter ablations under the direction of Maui cardiac electrophysiologist, Mark Schwab and his colleague Dr. Koonlawee Nademanee. These ablations are a new treatment for irregular heartbeat and can prevent future strokes. Dr. Nademanee, who is under contract with MMMC, is world renowned and a leader in this dynamic new area of medicine. They have completed numerous surgeries with positive outcomes and we are the only hospital in the state performing this procedure. The MMMC Foundation made a donation of $420,000 designated for the cardiovascular program to keep the program moving ahead. Funding was designated primarily for the infrastructure upgrades and equipment necessary to begin performing open heart and related surgeries within the next few months. Our comprehensive, leading edge services in this area are something we can all be proud of, as they have been made possible through the hard work and generosity of many of the people you will find listed in this report.

Quality

MMMC became part of the University of Hawaii’s John A. Burns School of Medicine Obstetrics and Gynecology Department’s Residency Program. As such, the hospital is now accepting graduate physicians, with medical degrees, who conduct a six-week rotation at the hospital working alongside Maui physicians in the same discipline. We anticipate that some of these physicians will choose to stay and work on Maui, thereby alleviating a growing shortage of physicians in this speciality.

A federal grant of $188,100 from the Health Resources and Service Administration (HRSA) was awarded to MMMC, for the development of a simulation and robotics laboratory. HRSA is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The grant was facilitated through U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye’s office and will allow MMMC to develop a simulation lab for team training of highrisk clinical scenarios. Simulation training is identified as a current strategy to address both the healthcare workforce shortage and augment clinical training.

MMMC’s quality measures and indicators are steadily improving. Care of patients with Heart Failure has been 98% compliant, and we were awarded the American Heart Association’s Silver Award for our consistent quality care. We have implemented nursing directed orders to assure that patients receive vaccinations when indicated. We remain consistent with a low surgical infection rate.

Chaplaincy Program MMMC started a formalized chaplaincy program with the installation of Chaplain Amy Hill. As program coordinator, Hill is an employee of Pacific Health Ministry, the agency that contracts with MMMC to provide chaplain services. She is the first full-time chaplain on board at the hospital. She is assisted by Chaplain Stan Franco, and together they provide 24/7 on-call services for the hospital. They have been an invaluable addition for not only our patients and their families, but a tremendous help to our frontline staff.

Behavioral Health Jason M. Andrus, MD was appointed the new Medical Director of the Behavioral Health division, attending physician on both Molokini units for adolescents and adults, and consulting psychiatrist to the hospital. He returns to Maui from Boston, where he spent the last four years as a consulting psychiatrist at Children’s Hospital of Boston and faculty of Harvard Medical School. We remain the only neighbor island offering an inpatient behavioral health facility for adolescents, which is extremely beneficial and important for our community.

It was a remarkable year in many areas and we anticipate that much of the groundwork done over the past several years, as you will see by the above timeline, has allowed the many great opportunities that are now unfolding to take place. The Foundation, “your foundation,” has been key to Maui Memorial Medical Center’s growth during this period, and will be instrumental to your hospital’s continued expansion and success in the future.
