Maui Memorial Medical Center Foundation 2008 ANNUAL REPORT

1,856 babies were born at Maui Memorial Medical Center in 2008, the third highest in the state.

February 22, 2008 was an above average day with 6 deliveries, including 6 lb 11oz baby girl, Sofia Carbajal (pictured ).

Just as a state-of-the-art Neo Puff Infant Resuscitator helps struggling newborns take their first breath, so too is Maui Memorial Medical Center’s vision for a world-class health facility breathing new life into Maui’s health care system.

Our Foundation’s Mission: “Because life is precious…the Foundation will support the health and wellness of the community of Maui and our visitors by ensuring Maui Memorial Medical Center has the resources needed to provide the highest level of medical care.”

Haloa . . . Everlasting Breath This 2008 Maui Memorial Medical Center Foundation annual report is dedicated to the many individuals who touch our lives through their commitment and heartfelt generosity - the communitarian who gives from the heart is an inspiration to all, our health care professionals who through their compassion and care enrich the quality of our lives each and every day, and the visionaries who continually strive to elevate the quality of health care, bringing new life for Maui County’s health care system. To all of you, for your dedication and perseverance in making a difference that will benefit our lives today and for the future, MAHALO for your spirit of support. Just as sun rises from the slopes of Haleakala takes our breath away, so do the precious moments in our life … moments made more memorable because of your generosity.

With warm aloha and gracious mahalo,

Executive Director Maui Memorial Medical Center Foundation

Welcome A Message from the CEO It has been another exciting and transformational year at Maui Memorial Medical Center. We have realized the culmination of many projects and advancements that were set in motion many years prior. The momentum was so great, that we often forgot to breathe. Our Emergency Department was renovated and expanded and is now running along smoothly and steadily. We hired two cardiac surgeons and support staff and made infrastructure improvements, so that our program is now well on the way to providing open heart surgery by the summer of 2009. We furthered our goals for autonomy from Hawaii Health Systems Corporation through successful legislation. With the direction and support of our Maui Regional System Board we also set out to explore new paths for our future, including the possibility of public/private partnerships or new operating models, allowing us to consider what we previously thought to be out of reach. While all of these objectives may seem lofty, originating in a business concept, rest assured that our only real goal is to improve the quality of your health care on Maui. We know that often the discussions get caught up in money and financing, which is of course necessary for growth, but the end result for all of this is to create the best health care available for Maui’s families. The ancient Hawaiians believed breath “ha” was sacred and key to good health. Now that we have achieved much of what we set out to several years earlier, we take a deep, full breath and hope that you will join us as we move toward a brighter future for Maui’s health care. Warm aloha,

Wesley Lo Chief Executive Officer Maui Memorial Medical Center

A quick look at MMMC

Maui Memorial Medical Center is already renowned for its exceptional 24/7 stroke intervention program, now we are on the threshold of a new era in health care. Soon our hospital’s cardiovascular services will expand its program to offer open heart surgery. With these two programs in place, we will all benefit from this new level of comprehensive care from prevention, treatment to rehabilitation.

Rudolph Madden Endowment Fund Benefits OT/PT Department

Pamela Madden George (in front) with (l to r): Lani Correa (MMMC Foundation), Gary George, and Gail Miyahira (MMMC program manager).

In 2oo8, Pamela Madden George and her husband, Gary presented a generous $30,000 donation to MMMC Foundation to create the Rudolph V. Madden Endowment Fund in honor of Pam’s late father Rudolph Madden. Funds will benefit MMMC’s Physical & Occupational Therapy Departments whose compassionate staff worked with Mr. Madden during his recovery after a stroke in 1978. “Although my father has since passed away, our family will always remember the care and compassion of Maui Memorial’s staff – for this we are eternally grateful.”

Jean & Clark Nakamoto Endowment Fund Supports Health care on Maui Long-time Maui residents Clark Nakamoto and his beloved wife Jean understood the importance of philanthropy and health care. Through their retirement fund, a generous donation was made that led to establishing the Jean F. & Clark H. Nakamoto Endowment Fund to benefit MMMC Foundation. “Prior to Jean’s passing, we were both blessed with what life gave us, many fond and warm memories and an opportunity to support our community through health care - a community that Jean loved and one that I will continue to support,” said 87-year-old Clark.

Lani Correa (in pink) with Buddy Nobriga (Maui Soda & Ice Works), Cathy Nobriga-Kim (Roselani Ice Cream) and Mike Nobriga (Maui Soda & Ice Works).

Sweet Support from Roselani Ice Cream For the past two years, Roselani Ice Cream’s thirdgeneration ice cream maker Cathy Nobriga Kim, a breast cancer survivor, has partnered with MMMC Foundation to share an important message about this deadly disease - that early detection and treatment of breast cancer saves lives. In 2008, Roselani Ice Cream presented the Foundation with a $2,500 donation from the proceeds of sales of their delicious 75th Anniversary flavor Aloha Cherry Truffle (A.C.T.), which will be used to support the Foundation’s breast cancer awareness programs and to help fund mammograms for women who are either under insured or uninsured. A big mahalo to Cathy and Roselani’s customers, retailers, and ice cream connoisseurs who A.C.T.’ed sweet to beat breast cancer.

Communitarians who give from the heart

In Memory of the late Norman Hondo

Lani Correa (MMMC Foundation) with tournament coordinator Lloyd Sodetani

When Norman Hondo passed away in 2008 many of the senior members at Maui Country Club thought that a golf tournament would be an appropriate tribute to Norman. Long-time friend Lloyd Sodetani was asked to organize this event held on September 27. With the support of the Country Club’s staff, board and many individuals who knew and respected Norman, a memorial tournament was held at the Maui Country Club - a place he loved and served as their General Manager for many years. At the wishes of the Hondo family all proceeds were donated to MMMC Foundation to benefit Maui Memorial, as an expression of their gratitude for all the kindness and excellent patient care the staff extended during his hospitalization. “Norman was a man of great integrity and honor,” said Lloyd Sodetani. “He loved the game of golf. He loved his family and friends and our community. For this we will always remember our dear friend.”

Lynne C. Buckley Fund Supports Oncology Department

Lynne Buckley

Maui resident Lynne Buckley feels truly blessed - thankful to have a beautiful home, a loving husband and most of all to be alive. Even as she bravely fights against cancer, she is grateful for the exceptional care provided by MMMC’s Oncology Department staff. “These dedicated individuals have a tremendous sense of aloha for people who are sick and we are grateful for their compassion and encouragement,” said Lynne. In appreciation for the care she receives, Lynne purchased nine new patient treatment chairs and four nurses stools for the department at a cost of nearly $9,000, made possible by the establishment of the Lynne C. Buckley Fund which her husband Richard established in her honor. Today her generous gift is enjoyed by the staff and patients of MMMC’s Oncology Department, a place dedicated to caring for our island’s cancer patients and their families.

Malama Pu‘uwai series In 2008, MMMC held a total of four Malama Pu‘uwai (Take care of your heart) series at various locations throughout the island. Residents learned more about healthy food choices, exercise, and how to promote wellness through early detection and modification of cardiovascular disease risk factors. Sponsored by MMMC Foundation, this popular 6-week series is free to the public. “I learned so much from this program, primarily the various signs of a stroke and how important it is to pay attention to those signs, cause it could be a matter of life or death,” said Eddie Ceballos of Olinda who attended the Upcountry session. Since 1952 Maui Memorial Medical Center (MMMC) has played an integral part in our lives caring for our island’s families and visitors. From its humble roots offering 140-beds for a diverse plantation community, over the years the hospital has grown right along with the island, both in size and efficiency to accommodate our expanding population. The hospital employs more than 1,200 employees and has over 200 attending physicians offering some of the most advanced health care in the state. It is currently the only acute-care hospital on the island and is supported through appropriated state funds and private financing along with community donations, including the MMMC Foundation.

Pause for a Second

A Case for Maui Memorial Medical Center

Recently, your Foundation caught up with MMMC Chief Executive Officer Wesley Lo for this candid interview about the hospital and its future. Some of his answers will surprise and inspire you, in the end we honestly believe that the hospital’s vision makes a strong case for why we ALL need to support this important health care facility which benefits our entire community.

Is MMMC’s recent upgrading of its facilities something we’ll see continuing in the near future? Absolutely. We are in the midst of several very important projects that will carry us forward. In the short term, we are finalizing our open-heart surgery program and have two extraordinary surgeons, Dr. Pat Cochran and Dr. Randy Waterford, on staff. Together they are overseeing the finishing touches on upgrading our infrastructure to accommodate advanced cardiac services, which will begin in the summer of (2009). Longer term plans are in the works for a new Heart, Brain and Vascular Center, a new Labor and Delivery unit, as well as new state-of-the-art operating rooms.

What is your vision for the hospital and what will it take to get there?

We are focused on expanding our hospital in a manner that not only provides what is best for our Maui community, but also what integrates our entire health care infrastructure in the most efficient way, and ties together the entire spectrum of care throughout the districts. While many will say that having just one hospital is a drawback, we are now poised to expand in the most judicious way, and in some ways it has afforded us an incredible opportunity to learn from other communities. We want to improve access and our services, in a prudent way that allows us to provide only those that we can do well, and where there is enough critical mass for them. We believe that strengthening Maui Memorial will actually provide support for other islands, and alleviate some of the stresses of other health care facilities, while keeping more of our citizens home on Maui.

How would you rate MMMC’s services compared to other hospitals both here in Hawaii and on the mainland? It’s on par with and in some instances better. Our staff is an exceptional group of people and the feedback we receive about them regularly from both our local and mainland patients is that it’s the best care they have ever received and they were often treated like family members. We are also very proud of our recent high marks across the board on our Core Measure Scorecard ending the fourth quarter of 2008, scoring 100 percent in 34 of 50 categories. Having said that, we are always working to continuously improve our services.

A Quick Look at MMMC

What is the Maui Regional System Board and how will its role impact the hospital’s future? The Maui Regional System Board is a volunteer group of Maui citizens, who represent some of the best and brightest of our community, as well those most committed to improving health care on Maui. They are tasked with overseeing the overall vision and goals for the hospital and work tirelessly in that regard over many planning and subcommittee sessions trying to determine correct pathways for the future.

How is MMMC working with other health care facilities to ensure a coordinated regional approach to health care?

MMMC’s newly-expanded Emergency Department is the second busiest in the state, treating nearly 33,000 patients in 2008.

We work closely with other providers to ensure that our approach is always mindful of what is needed to fill in the gaps for our different communities. We are also looking for ways to improve our long-term care situation and assist with new facilities opening in rural areas.

How can the community support MMMC to ensure it continues to move forward? We are fortunate that we have such an active and vital Foundation to support our hospital. There are so many opportunities through this non-profit organization for our community to give, volunteer, or attend numerous activities, on behalf of the hospital, that there truly is something for everyone. We ask that everyone join the call and find the way to give that best suits you.

MMMC is a 209-bed facility with more than 1,200 employees and 200 attending physicians, 90% are board-certified. MMMC employs more than 500 licensed clinical support staff in disciplines such as nursing, pharmacy, radiology and clinical psychology.

What is the hospital’s greatest asset?

Definitely it’s our staff. Our doctors, nurses, ancillary staff, technicians, housekeepers, maintenance workers, our entire hospital staff, make Maui Memorial such a special and great place to work. Without them, there would be no health care on Maui. In today’s challenging environment of longer hours and fewer resources, these hard working men and women deserve that extra smile and pat on the back for being our own “guardian angels.”

Perfect Care Rankings as of the 4th quarter of 2oo8 Heart Failures

96% Perfect Care

Maui Memorial’s review and audit staff reported 96% of all patients with heart failure received perfect care. Criteria was based on a number of factors from performance of a heart function test to echo cardiogram which tests heart functions.

Heart Attacks

In its own operating suite, the state-of-theart C-Arm machine also serves as a back up for MMMC’s angiography suite so there is no interruption in our vital stroke services.

96% Perfect Care

The same study, also noted that 96% of all patients with suffering a heart attack received perfect care based on various criteria including administering medicines at the appropriate times to giving clot buster treatment to prevent heart damage to a patient having a heart attack.

Cutting edge technology being used in MMMC’s Heart, Brain & Vascular Center has positioned Maui Memorial as a leader in stroke intervention and vascular procedures not only in Hawaii but across the Pacific and even in the U.S.

Every Breath Counts Maui Memorial Medical Center Foundation 2oo8 Financial Summary A Message from the Treasurer Maui Memorial Medical Center Foundation was not exempt from the financial downturn that plagued every institution and non-profit organization during 2008. We recorded unrealized losses of $400,000 in our portfolio which is conservatively invested 43% in equity and 39% in fixed income funds. Fortunately we held eighteen percent of our portfolio in cash equivalents which left us in a strong position at the end of 2008. During 2008 we received a $30,000 endowment from Rudolf V. Madden which increased our total endowments to $145,448. We were pleased to be able to meet some urgent needs of the hospital and provide $297,000 in equipment, patient assistance and community outreach programs. The faithful and generous support of our donors enables us to continue to fulfill our mission to Maui Memorial Medical Center and the community as a whole. Mahalo nui loa,,

A big mahalo to Ron Gess and his team from the People Who Clean (PWC) for their generous donation of labor on behalf of MMMC Foundation during the 2008 MercedesBenz Championship.

Ways to give to your Foundation There are many ways for you to charitably support the Foundation’s life giving mission: Contribute an Honorary Gift Honorary gifts are made in honor of a family member, friend or colleague.

Establish a Charitable Endowment Fund Endowing a Fund with MMMC Foundation is a fitting way to memorialize or honor a loved one and create a permanent legacy that will be remembered for generations. Your Foundation can carefully protect a donor’s identity, if desired.

The Gift of Real Estate If you own a home or other property you no longer wish to occupy or manage and you would like to make a charitable gift, you may find that a gift of real property can be a very efficient way to use your property to meet both goals.

Leave a Will or Bequest You could leave a bequest to MMMC Foundation by naming a fixed dollar amount, percentage of real estate, or specifying gifts of real estate or personal possessions through a will. Donors should consult with their professional advisor for assistance with proper legal documentation.

“Inferior Vena Cava filters used in MMMC’s Heart, Brain & Vascular Center trap clots and prevent them from reaching the lungs where they can be potentially fatal.” - Kevin Maier, RT, CV

Donate a Memorial Gift Memorial gifts are living tributes made in honor of a deceased friend or loved one.

Donate a Life Insurance Policy, IRA or Pension Plan You could name MMMC Foundation as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy, individual retirement account or pension plan. This can provide additional options and tax advantages in estate planning.

To make a donation, call us at 242-263O or donate online at www.MauiHospitalFoundation.org. The Foundation is a private, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. Foundation IRS Tax ID #99-0330698.

A donation by the Alpha Delta Kappa, Omicron Chapter, is helping newborns take their first breat (See page 10).
