A note from the publisher I believe the best part of publishing a magazine is the opportunity to meet and interview so many beautiful people. I know this dangerous, but I'm going to highlight one person in this column this week. I had the opportunity to speak with Chuck Swanson. If you don't recognize his name, he's the person in charge of running Hancher Auditorium.

The University of Iowa and the local arts community is so lucky to have Chuck Swanson leading the way at Hancher. Read more begininng on page 16

Tips for First Time Buyers: Choosing A Realtor Before Finding a Home Speciail to GoGuide Magazine January 2021

Purchasing a first home

is a wise financial investment and can provide priceless personal and emotional rewards as well. Home ownership offers an unprecedented sense of security, accomplishment, success, and perhaps most importantly, personal freedom for members of the LGBTQ community.

But before you begin to look at homes, it is a good idea to first shop around for a real estate professional who is compatible with your needs and understands your buying goals. Most novice buyers do it the other way around: they see a house they like, call the phone number on the yard sign, and immediately enter into a professional relationship entrusting the most important financial decision of a lifetime to any agent who happens to pick up the phone, and agent they know nothing about. As newcomers, they are suddenly confronted with complicated choices that carry powerful legal and financial consequences. In today’s market they encounter sellers who have the upper hand due to historic low inventory levels. There’s the potential for “silent homophobia” in the real estate industry, which can present an invisible obstacle for LGBTQ buyers, and is a legitimate and potentially stressful concern. And we all know that we make our worst decisions when we’re too stressed.

The careful selection of an agent who understands your unique needs and desires as a member of the LGBTQ community, and represents you in a professional manner can provide a reassuring level of comfort and confidence, as you work to create smooth sailing and fair dealings throughout the entire home-buying process. (continued on next page)

(continued from previous page)

Even if you know nothing about how the real estate game is played, that’s to services like GayRealEstate.com, you will be able to locate, interview, and select an agent who is LGBTQ/LGBTQ-Friendly and the perfect match for you.

As with any professional you hire, you will want to look for experience, a proven track record, a stellar reputation for customer satisfaction, and the ability to communicate with you and answer all of your questions in a way that inspires your confidence and trust. No matter where you plan to buy a home or what your budget is, you can now choose and interview an agent or agents right on-line – someone working in your area who is responsive, reliable, insightful, and fully knowledgeable of the local real estate market.

Once you have a qualified and trustworthy real estate professional on your team to help you find a house, negotiate on your behalf, and inform and guide you each step of the way, you can relax and enjoy the adventure of shopping for your new home. Coralville PrideFest Restructuring January 2021

GoGuide Magazine

Coralville, IA - Coralville PrideFest is the process of rethinking and restructuring the first-annual event. The location within the Iowa River Landing district remains an option. It's simply finding the right combination that meets the needs of all parties involved. Of course, the number one priority is the LGBTQ+ community in Coralville and all of Johnson County.

Fans shouldn't fret. ROMLLC Events is working hard to still offer a PrideFest on Sunday, September 5. There remains a high level of support among the local community. Everyone involved is working hard to make this event happen in 2021.

Negotiations are currently underway, and hopefully, a decision will be made soon. There are several local businesses interested in this event and are strong supporters of the local LGBTQ+ community. It's also important to note the City of Coralville is very supportive of a PrideFest event. Please visit Facebook.com/ CoralvillePride for more information.

State Senator Zach Wahls, D-Coralville, new minority leader of Iowa Senate January 2021 GoGuide Magazine By Tim Nedoba

The 2021 legislative session is scheduled to be-

gin on Jan. 11. The next legislative session's top priority is to call on the Republican majority to spend state money on a pandemic relief package.

Wahls said this is the time to use rainy day funds. He said, "it's not just a rainy day; it's a thunderstorm."

Senate Majority Leader Jack Whitver, R-Ankeny, said he understands people are hurting and says he wants help. "We have to be smart about our funding," Whitver said. "I look at it as a balance of trying to provide the assistance where it's needed, with not just raiding every rainy day fund we have." Reynolds is also expected to propose anti-racial profiling legislation. Wahls said, "he thinks that would be a step in the right direction."

He would also like to see lawmakers address racial disparities in the juvenile justice system. It sounds like both parties are ready to work together. Let's see if this holds throughout the session.

New Year January 2021 - 2020 wasn't one of our most favorite years. The list of things that went wrong is too long to mention in this short column. Some excellent things happened out of the bad of the past year. The rise of #BlackLivesMatter comes to mind. The hard work of healthcare workers and our scientific community in developing several different vaccines certainly comes to mind. It would be a mistake if we didn't mention our teachers, those workers that took the risk to make sure we were able to food on the table, and of course, the record number of people that went to the polls and voted are just a few of the many heroes of 2020. GoGuide Magazine reached out to several in the community to seek feedback on their hopes and thoughts on the coming year. Here are their responses. Your feedback is valued as well. Please visit GoGuideMagazinec.om and let us know your thoughts on 2021.

Geoff Fruin | Iowa City, City Manager

"We know the first several months of 2021 will continue to be very difficult. I believe the Iowa City community will continue to do amazing things to support each other through the end of the pandemic. When it is safe to do, I look forward to re-discovering all of the arts, culture and special events that make Iowa City such a fantastic community. Let’s stay focused through these tough times, help our neighbors and local businesses, and get ready for the time in 2021 to come back together."

Laura Jordan | Communications Director | Iowa Stage Theatre Company Bright Half Life | February 12-21, 2021 This is a new play by Pulitzer Prize nominee Tanya Barfield which chronicles a moving love story o f deeply committed lesbians that spans decades in an instance from marriage, children, skydiving and the infinite moments that make a life together.

New Outlook Biz McChesney | HIV and Hepatitis Prevention Program Manager | Iowa Department of Public Health "Here are a few bullet points for what we hope and expect for 2021.

1. 2021 will be a year for strategic planning and community engagement. Our hope is to engage in a strategic planning process that is community focused and raises up the voices of communities impacted by HIV and viral hepatitis. We will be working with communities and stakeholders to develop plans to end both the HIV epidemic and viral hepatitis in Iowa. 2. Integrating at-home HIV testing into PrEP and public health testing programs. Integrating at-home testing will expand access to individuals who have barriers to accessing other testing services and for individuals who need testing to maintain a PrEP regime. 3.The FDA is expected to approve the first long-acting injectable HIV medications in early 2021. The long-acting injections are administered monthly by a healthcare professional, compared to a standard daily oral regimen. 4. Increasing STD testing through a variety of mechanisms including at-home rapid testing and piloting rapid chlamydia and gonorrhea testing."

(here's a review) It will open on our virtual space in January."

New Year Charles Swanson | Executive Director of Hancher

"The curtain will rise again. The expectations will be high for the upcoming season. However, we have to be realistic about our expectations. We can reach for the sky, and we will, but we're still facing uncertainty. We will come back stronger. The future is bright. Hancher is also about diversion, equity, and inclusion. There is so much more to Hancher than just the excellent performances. It's a welcoming place for all people. It's a place to gather. It's the place to learn. It's a place to be entertained. Hancher is also a center of learning on campus. Student learning is essential to Hancher's success. Sandy Boyd (past UI President) said, 'Hancher is the largest classroom on campus.' There will be a 2021-22 season. The virtual work will continue. The audience is now limitless. "

Nicole Nisly, MD | Co-Director of the LGBTQ Clinic, PrEP Clinic and Anal Dysplasia Clinic.

"I hope you are well. The last year saw the launching of gender affirming vaginoplasty along with hiring of three new plastic surgeons to perform top surgery. This has been a challenging year for all with the Covid19 pandemic but throughout all the challenges we remain committed as a team to support the LGBTQ community. Our goals for next year include developing gender affirming voice therapy and facial feminizing surgery. We continue to expand our clinical programs with the addition of two new pediatric endocrinologists and hiring of a Transgender Surgical services coordinator. We continue to serve the LGBTQ community with gender affirming hormone therapy, HIV Pre-Exposure prophylaxis Clinic and the Anal dysplasia clinic, including the High Resolution Anoscopy program as well as continuing to offer a primary care home for LGBTQ identified patients and their families. We are looking forward to a safer and brighter 2021. Stay safe everyone and get your Covid19 vaccine as soon as possible."

New Outlook Patricia Smith, United Way of Johnson & Washington Counties

“As 2020 comes to a close, the usual mandate for end-of-year reflections seems to carry a heavier weight than in years past. Since March, the COVID-19 pandemic has taken more than 300,000 lives and infected over 17 million people in the United States. Businesses shuttered. Schools closed. Our community experienced the destruction of a rare derecho storm and in May, the killing of George Floyd set off an ongoing movement to dismantle structural racism. The social, political, and economic environment is likely to remain uncertain in the coming year, but United Way of Johnson & Washington Counties stands ready to continue to help our friends and neighbors. As we move into 2021 we will learn from broken systems, support our local leaders, and engage to enhance public awareness. Our focus has been, and will continue to be, 'Respond. Recover. Reimagine. Rebuild' to help our communities emerge stronger from 2020. ”

Nick Pfeiffer | Vice President of Mar keting & Communications | Think Iowa City - The Iowa City/Coralville Area Conven tion & Visitors Bureau

"At Think Iowa City, we hope for a near normal summer with a new look and feel of our traditional summer festivals. Things will never go back to the way they were. But that gives our area the opportunity think through new processes and experiences. We hope the public feels comfortable with coming back together and we can have a full Kinnick Stadium in the fall. All-in-all, we hope that everyone pauses and appreciates what we had, what we have, and the amazing things we can do when we all work together."

Pride Journey: Monterey, California January 2020 GoGuide Magazine By Joey Amato

For nearly a decade, Monterey has been on

my bucket list of United States destinations I wished to visit. The picturesque seaside town always seemed to pop up on my social media feed just when I was in need of a relaxation vacation. I decided this year would be the year I ventured to Monterey. I flew into San Jose airport where I met up with Joey Suarez, a friend and EDM musician who decided to tag along for this journey. It was also Joey’s first time visiting Monterey so we had the opportunity to explore the city for the first time together, which was quite a fun experience.

The first thing we did upon arrival was check in to our hotel, the beautiful Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa, located right on the water in the Cannery Row district of Monterey. The district got its name for being home to dozens of sardine canneries and was also the setting of John Steinbeck's novels Cannery Row and Sweet Thursday. Steinbeck was born in nearby Salinas, and his father served as Monterey County treasurer. The area is adorned with tributes to Steinbeck with statues erected in his honor and buildings bearing his name. If you have a chance to visit Monterey Plaza, ask for the owner’s suite which comes complete with a baby grand piano, dining table for 8 guests, two full bathrooms and three wrap-around porches. Not to mention unobstructed views of Monterey Bay. We did not even need an alarm, as each morning we were awoken (not too early) by the barks of the sea lions that gather along the coastline. Monterey is home to a ton of sea life. We had the opportunity to take a guided kayak tour of Monterey Bay given by a company called Adventures by the Sea. During our one-hour excursion, we passed dozens of seals, otters, sea lions and other marine animals.

At the time of my visit, California had strict COVID-19 restrictions, so masks were required everywhere, and restaurants were only allowed to offer outdoor dining, but since many have great views of the water, I did not mind dining al fresco. Monterey has a cute downtown with many locally owned shops and restaurants. If you are in the mood for a pre-din-

ner drink, swing by Montrio Bistro for one of their signature cocktails.

Schooners Coastal Kitchen & Bar is located in the Monterey Plaza Hotel and offers a wonderful selection of fish entrees. When dining by the sea, why not order the specialty? Joey and I began our meal with the Fresh Catch which consisted of Morro Bay pacific gold oysters, black tiger prawns and octopus ceviche. I fell in love with the prawns and the homemade cocktail sauce. While Joey decided to go with a panini as his main course, I stuck with fish. One of my favorite dishes is Cioppino. I first had the dish during a visit to San Francisco many years ago and order it every time I can find a restaurant that offers it. Each establishment has their own twist on this entrée. Schooners version of Cioppino contained shrimp, clams, mussels, calamari, and seasonal fish all in a delicious saffron-Dungeness crab broth.

Walking along Cannery Row is like taking a walk through history. Many of the old buildings still exist, although they are repurposed into hotels and retail establishments. There are dozens of cute boutiques and hidden gems in every nook and cranny. Soap Confections makes hand-crafted soaps available in a variety of shapes and scents, while Global Candle Gallery creates one-of-a-kind custom candles right in front of your eyes. Along the way we stopped at Coniglio Brothers Italian Deli for a delicious charcuterie platter. One thing is for sure, they do not skimp on the meat and cheese. There was so much prosciutto that we had some to bring back to our hotel for an afternoon snack. That being said, we needed a nice bottle of wine to pair with our leftovers, so we stopped by A Taste of Monterey, a wine market and bistro which offers an extensive collection of local wines from Monterey County winemakers. Since many of the indoor attractions, such as the Monterey Bay Aquarium were still closed due to COVID-19 restrictions, we had a lot of free time to walk around the town and eat…and boy did we eat. The Fish Hopper is a family-owned restaurant founded in 1950, which offers stunning views of the bay and incredible cocktails. Since I was on vacations, I went for the Toasted Coconut Colada, made with Skyy Pineapple vodka, pineapple juice, a splash of Amaretto and a house special piña colada mix. It was the perfect way to enjoy lunch with great company. (Continued on next page)

To cap of our culinary journey of Monterey, we visited The Sardine Factory. Do not let the name fool you. The establishment is one of the most incredible fine-dining experiences I have ever had - all underneath a tent. Although customers are not allowed inside the building (except for restroom use), we got a private tour of the property, which includes an elaborate wine cellar fit for king, complete with a custom wooden table large enough to seat 24 guests. The Sardine Factory is known for its extensive wine list, one of the finest in the world, complete with over 2,000 labels and 20,000 bottles. The restaurant offers private wine lockers for their frequent patrons. I will not disclose all the celebrities whose names adorn the lockers, but I will say one goes by the nickname “The Governator”. I was already in heaven and dinner had not even begun. We had the great pleasure of meeting two of the owners, one being the head chef. I told him to bring us whatever he wanted. The rest of my party seemed a bit perplexed by this, but having written many dining reviews in my career, I found this request to be not only fun for me, but also exciting for the chefs as they get to prepare their favorite dishes – some of which I probably would not have ordered on my own.

We began with their famous Abalone Bisque, a smooth bisque prepared with bacon, chives, Madeira wine. This specialty was served at President Reagan’s Inauguration. Talk about historic. The bisque was followed by one of the day’s specials, a pan-seared sea scallop over foie gras. I will admit, I am not a big fan of foie gras, but I do love scallops. They paired perfectly together. Next came one of the chef’s favorite dishes, Linguini Carbonara, homemade pasta prepared with Parmesan & Romano cheeses, egg, scallions, chives, pancetta, and black pepper. Growing up in New York, I had this dish many times, but this was the best I have ever had…and my favorite dish of the entire trip.

Chef Cutino decided we had not tried enough of his dishes, so he brought us his version of surf and turf which in this case was veal and lobster. To end the evening, he brought us delectable Chocolate Dipped Bonbons served over dry ice – which made for great Instagram photos and videos, in addition to his homemade Chocolate Kahlua Cinnamon gelato, and “The Factory” spumoni. I am still dieting! It was the perfect way to end a much-needed vacation by the sea. Being by the water always relaxes me and of course being surrounded by great people and great food never hurts either.
