A note from the publisher & editor

Welcome to the first-ever “Guide to Coralville Pride Festival” Coralville, IA - It’s an exciting time for Coralville. The City will be hosting the first-ever Pride Festival. It’s an exciting time for everyone. GoGuide is excited to be a participant in this event. It hasn’t been an easy road to get to this point. Last you would have the first Pride Festival, but all know about the horrific pandemic we’ve all suffered through, and postponing was a straightforward decision. The support of the City of Coralville, including Mayor Lundell and City Manager Kelly Hayworth, has been overwhelming. Coralville is a great place to live, and it’s a great host for a fall Pride Festival. The road to get to this point hasn’t been easy. Many obstacles and roadblocks were thrown our way, but we persevered and have created an event everyone can be proud to support. Everyone is welcome to attend the event at Blue Tavern. This is for the LGBTQ+ communities, friends, families, sponsors, and allies. This would have never happened without the support of so many. TN Side note. I hate table of contents

THE LEAD ‘Pumpkin Spice Gay’ A column by Erica Barz

GoGuide Magazine October/November 2021

June may be Pride Month, but LGBTQ Iowans keep the celebration going all fall long. I love this not only because I’m a Pumpkin Spice Gay™, but also becauseour community has several lesser known celebrations and observances in the fall that these events can help lift up. LGBTQ History month, Trans Day ofRemembrance, Bisexual Visibility Day, and National Coming Out Day all takeplace in the fall, just to name a few. Out of these celebrations, I think National Coming Out Day tends to bring out the most varied feelings for many LGBTQ people. At its core, National Coming Out Day is a day for us to honor the brave act of coming out. But it’s also a day where we can acknowledge that many in our community cannot, or simply do not wish to, come out. Coming out as a concept is deeply meaningful to some, and not to others. This complexity is part of what makes our community truly special, and no one way of looking at coming out is better than another. Regardless of how we feel about “coming out” as a concept, National ComingOut Day is an opportunity to pause and think about the work required to build a society where everyone is free to be their authentic and true self. I hope you carry that energy with you as you continue to celebrate Pride this fall.

Pride Campaign for LGBTQ Clinic Coralville Pride Fall Pride Festival has goal of raising $60,000 for the betterment of the clinic Special to GoGuide Magazine Guide Coralville Pride 2021

About the Clinic The UI Health Care LGBTQ Clinic opened in 2012 under the directorship of Dr. Nicole Nisly, Professor of Internal Medicine, and Dr. Katie Imborek, Associate Professor of Family Medicine. The LGBTQ Clinic started out with a Tuesday evening Clinic at Iowa River Landing and was financially housed in the Department of Internal Medicine. In the past 8.5 years since its inception, the “clinic” has expanded beyond the Department of Internal Medicine and follows the providers and staff whenever and wherever they are seeing patients. The core team consists of four primary care providers (two in Internal Medicine and two in Family Medicine), one pediatric endocrinologist, one PharmD, and multiple registered nurses and medical assistants. As UI Health Care has added expanded services specifically for transgender patients, they have grown their secondary team to include gynecology providers, urologists, plastic surgeons, oral surgeons, dermatologists, speech therapists, child psychiatrists, marriage and family therapists, and even law professors and students. The majority of persons involved in the care of LGBTQ patients at UIHC are providers and employed clinical and non-clinical staff. They have a number of volunteers including medical students and resident physicians who spend time shadowing providers outside of their mandated clinical time in hopes of garnering the necessary knowledge to care for patients identifying as LGBTQ dermatologists, speech therapists, child psychiatrists, marriage and family therapists, and even law professors and students. in hopes of garnering the necessary knowledge to care for patients identifying as LGBTQ in a medically competent and culturally humble way. How You Can Make a Difference Like all philanthropic funds related to UI Health Care, federal law prohibits the provision of direct patient services (such as money toward medications, surgical procedures, etc). However, funds can be used to support additional training and education for providers through LGBTQ-focused conferences. Additionally, it could be used to fund a position such as a social worker or care navigator to help assist LGBTQ patients through the complex care system of insurance coverage, prior authorization, and specialty care. Finally, we would hope to use the donations to directly impact patients in significant financial need that preclude their ability to purchase personal items that assist in their overall health and well-being. The majority of these items would be used by transgender and gender non-conforming persons--those who are the highest risk for health disparities and systemic discrimination. Our Goal We hope to raise $10,000 to purchase items that would greatly reduce the gender dysphoria experienced by these individuals and increase their safety as they walk through a world that is largely ciscentric and heterosexist. In addition, we would hope to provide travel vouchers for LGBTQ patients who did not have the means to travel to the clinic for services. Thank you for helping us achieve our goal. Their music ranges from classic ’60s and ’70s rock to newly released songs by contemporary singer-songwriters and includes American folk music, Irish melodies, bluegrass, blues, ballads, and mostly, good ol’ fashioned rock and roll. CORALVILLE WELCOMES

PRIDEFEST 2021

Welcome to Coralville! One of Iowa’s fastest growing cities Coralville, IA - The development of the Johnson county community that we now know as Coralville began after the construction in 1843 of what was then the largest dam in Iowa along the Iowa River and the mills that eventually made use of the dam’s power. By the time of its incorporation in 1873, Coralville’s population had grown to almost 300 and it boasted a blacksmith shop, wagon shop, meat market, lumberyard, dry good store, and four saloons. The town was christened Coralville in 1866 shortly after Louis Agassiz, a Harvard zoologist, spoke at the University of Iowa about the “Coral Reefs of Iowa city” and was impressed by the samples of fossilized coral that he found in the limestone around the mills along the Iowa River. The population of Coralville grew from 433 in 1940 to 977 in 1950. Automobile travel and tourism became common, and the “Coralville Strip” became well-populated with retail shops, service stations, discount stores, restaurants, and motels. During the same period, the Coralville Dam was built 4 miles upstream from the city. Authorized in 1938 by Congress, begun in 1949, and completed in 1958 by the US Corps of Engineers, it has been successful in preventing serious flooding except for the exceptional years of 1993 and 2008. By the 1990s, Highway 6, known as “the strip,” was ready for a makeover, complete with decorative street lighting and plantings. A city center was developed around the city campus and former post office. In 1996, work began on Coral Ridge Mall, the state’s second-largest indoor shopping center, at the intersection of Interstate 80 and Highways 6 and 965. As of the 2010 Census, Coralville’s population reached 18,907; Coralville is one of the top 50 fastest growing cities in Iowa. Based on results of the 2020 Census, the population of Coralville is 22,318. Source: Coralville.org

Community Circus is Coming to the Coralville Pride Festival Main Stage An interview with one of the cast members GoGuide Magazine By Tim Nedoba June 2021

GoGuide: Coralville Pride Festival is so excited to have you as part of our entertainment lineup. What can attendees expect to see from the community circus troupe? Answer: We have a variety of acts in store! As performers, we come from a diverse background of training; among our number are jugglers, hoop artists, aerialists, and much more. GoGuide: How did you and the troupe get started in performance art? Answer: Several of us began by taking workshops or private lessons in our skill of interest. However, many of us have picked up certain skills (like juggling and cyr wheel) through self-practice. Social media can be a wonderful resource for tips and ideas when learning circus skills. Please feel free to ask us about our individual journeys at Pride Fest! GoGuide: Where else have you performed? Answer: Individuals in our troupe have performed for a variety of shows in central and eastern Iowa. We have performed at community events (such as Fourth of July and Cedar Rapids Pride Fest) and private events (including birthdays and weddings). We often find ourselves supporting other community activities by providing halftime shows for events such as roller derby and drag performances. GoGuide: What do you enjoy most about performing? Answer: Performing gives us an opportunity to demonstrate our skills and artistry. More importantly, it allows us to share our love of the circus with an audience—and hopefully get them excited about the circus too!

GoGuide: Do you interact with the crowd? Answer: Yes! We are very much focused on audience engage22 ment. Pride

A book celebrating the role of bars in LGBTQ+ history Miller Lite has been there since the beginning BY PETER FROST

Originally published in Beer & Beyond Molson/Coors.com Edited for content, relevance, and space GoGuide Magazine Images courtesy MolsonCoors & Adobe Creative Cloud

The long and winding road to equality for members of the LGBTQ+ community has been the role of gay bars that have served as welcomed guideposts and safe-havens for people who identify LGBTQ. It’s safe to add LGBTQ+ friendly establishments as well.

To chronicle the rich history of queer bars and their importance to the community, Miller Lite is using its sizable platform and partnering with Dr. Eric Cervini, a Pulitzer Prize finalist, bestselling author, and historian of LGBTQ+ politics, to produce a guidebook called “Beers & Queer History,” which begins pre-sales today at shop.millerlite.com. All proceeds will benefit Equality Federation, the brand’s long-term partner. The book, set for an early 2022 release, tells the stories of 10 of the most critical queer bars in American history and details the vital role each played in the LGBTQ+ community.

“Bars were our havens,” Cervini writes in the book’s foreword. “For most of the 20th century, an era of rampant homophobia and transphobia, many LGBTQ+ folks had no choice but to live double lives. During the day, while at work or with their families, they acted straight. For their safety, they often concealed their gender identities. But at night, they went to the bars, where –– at last –– they could be themselves.” The guide’s name, “Beers & Queer History,” is to ensure the inclusion of all LGBTQ+ identities. Once a pejorative term, “queer” has been reclaimed by members of the community, who encourage its use. The brand hopes the book will serve as a reference for the next generation of queer voices. “Beers & Queer History” is the latest stage of Miller Lite’s “Open & Proud” program, an initiative the brand launched in June in partnership with Equality Federation that aims to make bars safer and more inclusive for the LGBTQ+

community. As part of that partnership, Miller Lite is donating $250,000 to the organization to help advance workplace fairness and equity for LGBTQ+ individuals at national and local levels.

“The book is all about celebrating inclusive spaces,” says Lauren Cassel, associate marketing manager for Miller Lite. “Our brand purpose is to champion authentic connections between people, to allow people to be their true selves. And no community knows how important that is more than the LGBTQ+ community.”

By telling stories of how bars — and beer — have brought members of the LGBTQ+ community together, the brand hopes “to inspire more people to be around those they love and feel comfortable being themselves. We’re helping to lead our industry to promote and protect safe spaces in communities around the country,” Cassel says. The book also represents Miller Lite’s parent company MolsonCoors’ long history of LGBTQ+ advocacy. Miller Lite began supporting the community in the 1970s when it sponsored the Folsom Street Fair in San Francisco.

On top of that, Miller Brewing and Coors Brewing were leaders in the beer industry — and among major U.S. companies — in providing same-sex domestic partner benefits to its employees more than 20 years ago. MolsonCoors also has earned a 100 rating on the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index for 18 years running.

Some have questioned conservative Coors family members’ anti-gay very public positions. However, it must be reported the Coors company has a long history of scoring 100% on HRC’s corporate LGBTQ index. “We want to show this community that we’re not just there during Pride; we’re there for them every single day throughout the year,” Cassel says. With a lack of queer women-focused series on television, OFF THE CHART, Xtra’s recap and discussion podcast of The L Word: Generation Q is bringing that energy back to your airwaves. Special to GoGuide Magazine Pink Triangle Press Shared by Rivendell Media Edited for space and content

Get a unique, intimate perspective on the loves and losses of L.A.’s

most dramatic lesbians and bisexuals, direct from one of the world’s oldest independent queer media organizations. Erica Lenti (Xtra senior editor) and Chelle Turingan (managing producer, video) come to the podcast with a passion for untangling the chart - breaking down every relationship and recap with the precision only diehard L Word fans can muster. And the podcast, nominated for a Digital Publishing Award in 2020, is now video-first! Our hosts Erica and Chelle bring their unfiltered takes from their home studios direct to your screens. Listen in as these two friends gossip about Shane’s latest hook-ups and gush about the show’s newest ships. From our co-host, Erica Lenti: “The L Word is known best for pioneering a kind of television series never before seen in the early aughts—most queer women I know have memories of seeing the loving, laughing, kissing, cheating, and breathing between women who look and dress and talk like they do for the first time on screen. The L Word: Generation Q brings that visibility to a new audience, merging millennial queer sensibilities with our favorite L.A. lesbians of yore.” It’s like talking about the show with your best queer friends - right in their living rooms. But there’s no Zoom insight here. With high-quality video production and peak audio quality, the podcast exemplifies Xtra’s work today - an LGBTQ2S+ media trailblazer that’s mastering multimedia. Our director of editorial, Rachel Giese says, “Like other

outlets, the pandemic has forced us to be creative in audio and video production—setting up home studios and shooting remotely—but, for us, that’s been a virtue. Xtra has always had a scrappy, can-do, DIY ethos, which reflects the ingenuity and resourcefulness of our communities.” We’re online in text format, on video, and in audio, no matter what kind of content you’re looking for. For listening to Off The Chart on the go, the podcast is also available in audio format from your favorite podcast app. “We’re inspired by the new ways we’ve been able to reach and connect with our audiences over the past year and a half,” says Giese, “whether that’s our live Kiki with Kevin online events to chat about all things Drag Race or our new newsletter offerings, like the pop-up Rainbow Votes 2021 covering the Canadian federal election, or our feature documentary, Small Town Pride.” The L Word: Generation Q is a sequel series to the uber-popular Showtime drama from 2004 to 2009. Showcasing both original and new characters, the historic show’s update has been a hit with queer audiences and is reviving nostalgia in everyone who loved it first. GG
