School student ID cards show 988 suicide line, thanks to this mom By Cher Muzyk

Kim Fleming’s life changed the day her only child, David Joseph Cobb, died by suicide in 2015. Since then, Fleming has worked to bring awareness to teen mental health issues and teamed up with a local state lawmaker to ensure Virginia students have quick access to help. This school year, some of those efforts came to fruition in the form of student identification cards issued by K-12 schools, colleges and universities across the commonwealth. At Fleming’s suggestion, Virginia Sen. Jeremy McPike sponsored a bill last year
that requires all schools and public colleges that produce student ID cards to print the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline number on the cards. Anyone experiencing a mental health crisis can call or text 988 — or visit 988lifeline.org online — 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Fleming, 55, of Manassas, said friends sent her pictures of the new cards when their kids brought them home. So far, she has seen them from schools in the City of Manassas, and in Prince William, Fauquier, Loudoun and Spotsylvania counties. See STUDENT ID, page 2

Craving Samoas, Thin Mints or Tagalongs? For the last several years, western Prince William County residents looking for their annual Girl Scout cookie fix could find their favorites on sale outside stores at the Virginia Gateway, the area’s largest shopping hub. But not this year. Virginia Gateway’s owners, the Texas-based investment firm Crow Holdings, issued a last-minute cancellation last week of all Girl Scout cookie booths scheduled outside the Gainesville shopping center to the disappointment of several local troops. The situation came to light when a distraught Girl Scout “cookie mom” alerted the community last week via the Facebook page Western Prince William Chatter that Virginia Gateway had canceled dozens of cookie booths. The now-deleted post prompted lots of angry comments. “Disappointed to learn they canceled all Girl Scout cookie booths at the Gateway locations to include

Lowe’s, Giant and Five Below,” the post said. “They did this less than a week (before sales) begin (and) after troops … allocated cookies for these time slots and anticipated sales.” Every year during Girl Scout cookie season, which started Friday, Feb. 2, the Girl Scouts of the Nation’s Capital coordinates cookie
booth slots outside popular shopping centers where troops can sell extra boxes to meet their fundraising goals. The slots are scheduled online, and troops must act quickly to secure the most popular sites. Troops sometimes order hundreds of extra boxes to sell at cookie booths.
Staff Reports Police have identified the victim of a fatal shooting in Dale City last week as a 23-year-old woman from Burlington, North Carolina. Egypt Zapporah Carter, 23, was found by police at 2:07 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 2, in a car parked outside the Orchard Mills apartments in Dale City. The complex is located off Benita Fitzgerald Drive, down the road from Fanny Fitzgerald Elementary School. Carter was pronounced dead at the scene. A small dog was also located inside the car but was not hurt, according to Master Police Officer Renee Carr, a Prince William County Police Department spokeswoman. As of Tuesday, Feb. 6, Prince William County police had not yet announced any arrests or suspects in connection with the shooting. Carter is the third young woman to die of a fatal shooting in Prince William County since Jan. 1.

School student ID cards show 988 suicide line, thanks to this mom STUDENT ID, from page 1 “When I started receiving the pictures, that’s when it really hit me that, oh my God, this is for real,” Fleming said. “I did this in honor of my son, and I did it for my son, and I just hope he’s proud of me.” Fleming’s son, David, was a 17-year-old Osbourn Park High School student when he took his life nine years ago. He was an artist who loved to draw and enjoyed playing video games, Fleming said. “David was just an amazing young man. He was funny; he loved
to laugh and have fun; and loved to make other people laugh,” Fleming said. “But deep down he was struggling more than anybody knew.” To honor David and to raise awareness of mental illness and suicide prevention, Fleming started the nonprofit David J. Cobb Foundation in June 2016. “The years prior to my son’s passing, I struggled to find programs or resources to help not only my son but me navigate the mental health system,” Fleming wrote on the foundation’s website. “We aim to bridge that gap and be a provider of resources to those who are struggling and their families who might not know what to do.” When Fleming learned other states were printing the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline on student ID cards, she decided to make it happen
On Saturday, Jan. 6, Desire Alexandria Buggs, 24, of Woodbridge, was fatally shot while sitting in the passenger seat of her husband’s white Honda Accord. Buggs’ husband, Daniel Okoe Lawson, 24, drove Buggs to Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center, where she later died. Lawson has been charged with murder in connection with his wife’s death. The couple have a 3-year-old child. On Sunday, Jan. 14, Brittnee Yvonne Posey, 30, was shot and killed by her husband in their Triangle home in what police determined was a murder-suicide. A police investigation found that Nicholas Allen Smith Withrow, 42, and his wife, Posey, were arguing when Withrow shot Posey before turning the gun upon himself, according to Lt. Jonathan Perok, a Prince William County police spokesman. Family members found the couple deceased inside their home, located in the 18300 block of Cabin Road in Triangle, at about 6 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 14. The family members had received “concerning texts” indicating the couple was having an argument before they arrived at the home, Perok said. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. A 3-year-old girl was also found inside the residence and was unharmed. The child was released to the custody of other family members, Perok said. So, I thought, why not Virginia? Let’s get something done here.” Fleming approached McPike, D-29th, at Forest Park High School’s suicide prevention walk in the fall of 2022 and pitched the idea, she said. McPike, a father of four who lost his brother to suicide and serves as a volunteer Prince William County firefighter and EMT, was a willing partner. “I’ve seen firsthand how important mental health care is to fight against stigmas for those who may experience a mental health crisis,”

McPike wrote on his website. McPike also sponsored legislation in 2021 that created a permanent funding source for the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline in Virginia. On his website, he says he’s “especially proud” of the legislation. “When I pitched my idea to him, he loved it,” Fleming said. Less than six months later, “he had introduced the bill, and it was signed into law.” McPike introduced the bill in January 2023. It went through seven rounds of votes in various committees and was eventually approved unanimously by both the Virginia House and Senate. In fact, there was not a single “no” vote or abstention as the bill advanced. Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin signed the bill, and it went into effect last July 1. 10th District congressional race draws 19 candidates 2020 GOP nominee Aliscia Andrews joins the race

The race for U.S. Congress in Virginia’s 10th district — which includes the northwestern half of Prince William County as well as Manassas and Manassas Park — has grown more competitive in recent weeks, drawing a total of 19 candidates. Incumbent Rep. Jennifer Wexton (D) announced last year that, for health reasons, she would not seek reelection. Four new Republicans and three new Democrats recently joined the race. Their additions bring the number of candidates vying for the GOP nod to seven, while 12 Democratic candidates are running for their party’s nomination.
The Republicans
Republicans recently joining the race include former GOP nominee Aliscia Andrews, who lost to Wexton by 13 points in 2020. Andrews, of Loudoun County, is a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, a former Virginia deputy secretary of Homeland Security and a former adviser to Gov. Glenn Youngkin. In her current effort, Andrews is focusing on “parents’ rights” in public education, lowering the cost of living, and protecting veterans’ benefits. Andrews earned a master’s degree in business administration from Ashford University and a certificate in cybersecurity strategy management from Georgetown University. Andrews and her husband have three children. Republican John Beatty, of Lovettsville, also recently announced his bid. Beatty is a former Loudoun County School Board member and works as an IT director at The Heights School in

Alexander Isaac Jr., a retired Army colonel who lives in Loudoun County, is also vying for the GOP nod. Isaac is a director of national security programs for ECS, a Fairfax informational technology services and consulting company and president of his neighborhood’s homeowners association. Clair Marie McDade is also listed as a Republican candidate for the 10th District race. McDade has not yet launched a website or social media sites for her campaign. The four join three Republicans already in the race: Manga Anantatmula, Mike Clancy and Brooke Taylor, who announced their bids last year.
On the Democratic side, notable new candidates include Travis Nembhard, of Bristow, who lost his bid for state delegate last November. An attorney, Nembhard is division chief for the Washington, D.C., Department of For-Hire Vehicles’ Compliance and Enforcement Division. He’s also an adjunct professor at the American University Washington College of Law. Adrian Pokharel, of Gainesville, has also announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination. Pokharel is a former National Security Administration officer and CIA agent and is a retired disabled veteran. He cites expanding access to health care, spurring economic development and improving public safety among his goals if elected. Marion Devoe Sr., of Haymarket, is also vying for the Democratic bid. Devoe is a Vietnam veteran and a former chief operations officer for the White House executive office of the president under former President George W. Bush, according to his website. He has a master’s degree in business from the University of Maryland. The three join nine other Democrats already in the race, including three Virginia state delegates — Michelle Maldonado, of Manassas; David Reid, of Loudoun County; and Dan Helmer, of Fairfax County — as well as three state senators: Jennifer Boysko, of Fairfax, and Suhas Subramanyam, of Loudoun. Eileen Filler-Corn, the first female and Jewish speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates, is also vying for the job, as is Atif Qarni, a Prince William County teacher who served as Virginia’s secretary of education under former governor Ralph Northam (D). At Dabble, donated craft stuff gets a 2nd chance By Sondra Anzalone Special to the Times
A new business in Manassas has an ambitious goal — to persuade local crafters to empty their junk drawers, pull those bags of beads out of their closets and clear their “someday” shelves so their neglected supplies can be recycled to others to enjoy. Dabble Creative Reuse Center asks crafters to donate supplies they no longer need — like project leftovers, impulse buys, kits that were gifted to them — and the center will resell them at a fraction of retail price. For customers looking for art materials, they can purchase a bag of pre-owned supplies to try a new artistic medium or finish a longstanding project. The goal is both to make arts and craft materials more affordable and more environmentally sustainable. The store is independently owned but is the eighth “creative reuse center” of its kind in Virginia, according to artist and co-owner Kelly Auldridge, 45. The recycling process unites supplies that no one is using with creators who will give them new life, she said. “You’d be amazed at what people said they would throw away if it wasn’t for this place,” Auldridge said. Auldridge is a tactile material artist (www.necessaryfrippery.com) who has been creating and selling art and jewelry for several years. She also teaches macrame crafting classes at Vita Nova in Nokesville and Fillagreen in Manassas when she’s not working her government weekday job. She was introduced to the creative reuse concept by a visiting sustainable artist at Fillagreen this past summer and was “instantly” inspired to create Dabble with her husband and co-owner Greg, 43. The Manassas area couple opened the shop a few months later and said

Customers can choose a bag size (small $8, medium $16, large $28) and fill it with an assortment of materials selected from the shop’s shelves and boxes for a set price. While most items are part of the “fill-a-bag” pricing structure, some select items are individually priced as marked. Dabble has everything from buttons and pipe cleaners to paints and jewelry-making supplies to equipment such as quilting frames and
looms. “It’s a different shop every week,” said Auldridge, since inventory is constantly changing with each donation received. The store affords the opportunity for “someone else to find joy” in the usable products. Giving usable supplies a second chance keeps them out of the landfill. “By reducing the financial barrier to art and crafting, we can help people pursue their passions and perhaps find some new ones,” said Auldridge.
Some customers have already become regulars, said Auldridge. “One lady has an agreement with her husband that she will donate at least one bag of supplies before bringing home anything new,” she said. Up to two boxes or bags can be dropped off without an appointment during business hours, which are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekends only. For larger donations, customers are asked to schedule an appointment during the week so that the items can be stored and sorted before being put out for sale. Dabble CRC also aims to be a space for creatives to get together by offering classes, said Auldridge. Upcoming events include a “macraweave” program for the month of February and a spring break camp. Coach Chrissy Kelly’s No. 1-seeded OP girls — who have won the last three Cedar Run District and Class 6 Region B crowns — are once again an undeniable fact of life as the Cedar Run District tournament begins this week. “I’m just really proud of this group. We’re really young and we’ve definitely had some growing pains,” said Kelly. “But through all the growing pains, they’ve been resilient and grown each and every week and have responded to the challenges that are placed upon them.” Osbourn Park lost point guard Alana Powell, the 2023 Class 6 Player of the Year, and all-state forward Kori Core, who led the Yellow Jackets to consecutive state final appearances from 2021-22, leaving a new core entering this season. “Coming in, we were doubted a lot. We maybe even doubted ourselves sometimes. We’ve come a long way, though,” said sophomore point guard Samia Snead. The Yellow Jackets stumbled in their first two tests, falling to Audenried (Philadelphia, Pa.) 5857 on Dec. 9 and defending Class 6 runner-up Manchester 58-33 on Dec. 11.

Since losing to Manchester, Osbourn Park won 15 of their final 16 games, including defining victories over Centreville, Gwynn Park (Brandywine, Md.), James River Midlothian and Gainesville. Their only loss came to Thomas Dale on Jan. 13. The Yellow Jackets defeated visiting Patriot 7831 in the regular season finale on Friday to finish 18-3 overall and 12-0 in district play. “We got it handed to us by Manchester and Thomas Dale, but it didn’t collapse them. We took it, understood it and we’re still trying to get better at the things that we need to get better at,” Kelly said. “The reason I made such a hard schedule was simply due to them needing to grow through the good and the bad. You have to learn to be resilient,” Kelly added. “You can’t teach experience. You have to go through it. Every experience has allowed this young group to grow.” Despite the highs and lows, the youthful Yellow Jackets ultimately picked up where Powell, Cole and the rest of their predecessors left off. “They left a leg-
acy. It’s a standard we got to live up to,” said Snead. Taking over from Powell as the starting point guard, Snead seems poised to carry on Osbourn Park’s tradition of employing game breaking ball handlers. Against Patriot, the 5-foot-4 sophomore hit four 3-pointers and led the Yellow Jackets in scoring with 20 points. On the wing, sophomore forward Keyarah Rainey uses her quick hands to complement Snead with suffocating defense and effective scoring at the rim. Creating frequent turnovers, Rainey often pilots Osbourn Park’s rapid playstyle that feasts on transition and fast break opportunities with quick downcourt passes that lead to easy layups. Rounding out the starting lineup are seniors Paige Walters, Angelina Yann and sophomore Jayel West. On the bench, 6-1 junior forward Alexandra Brown was an all-region selection last year and is important to the rotation because of her size. “Until AB gets on the floor, we’re small, so we have to use our speed with Keyarah running the floor,” Kelly said. “If we can score fast, then we don’t have to worry about size.” Brown is the most seasoned Yellow Jacket on the bench, along with junior Julia Matthews, but Kelly has confidence in that unit, which includes sophomores Jaelyn Gorham, Grace Justiniano and freshmen Payton Walters, Jane Salinas and Marlowe Hall, despite their inexperience. Spring lawn care tips are great in March and April, but February can also be a good time to start putting them to work. Temperatures may rise, but not always. But that does not necessarily mean you can go and start fertilizing your yard right away. The good news is that you do not have to wait until the first day of spring, March 19, to start your lawn care. Once the air temperatures start warming up and the ground starts drying out, most lawn owners begin itching to get outside. But the biggest factor in knowing when to get out in the yard is seeing signs of plants waking up from the winter rest. This is determined more by soil temperatures, rather than air temperature. New lawn owners or casual ones probably do not have a tool to measure soil temperature on hand, but you can typically find information on current soil temperature on your local county website. Another option
is to look for yellow Forsythia, which blooms when the temperatures are around 50 degrees. There is always the chance that one last freeze will hit, but that does not mean you have to sit on your hands and wait to start reviving your lawn. Late winter is a great time to service your mower, so it is ready when you are. Change the oil, check for loose or cracked belts, sharpen the blade and check the safety guards. Always check the manual before doing any service on your lawnmower. If something is cracked or broken, you have time to get it fixed before you need to mow. Late winter and early spring are important and popular times to start working on your lawn, but they are not the only seasons where good lawn management is necessary. It is import-
