Spatial Profiling

EDITOR Amara Projansky amara@upstatehouse.com

I

ASSIGNING EDITOR Lisa Selin Davis lisa@upstatehouse.com

was 23 and looking for an affordable place to live in New York City, and that meant a shared apartment. I perused the Village Voice, and soon I was on 7th Street between Avenues B and C, catching keys thrown from a window. The place was exactly what you’d expect of a student apartment—sparsely furnished with crates for bookcases and a mattress on the floor of one of the bedrooms. It seemed like an authentic New York apartment, and I liked the emptiness. My interviewer and his girlfriend were interesting and sophisticated—he worked in a newsroom and she was from London, studying journalism at Columbia. I knew right away I wanted to move in. We sat and talked for a while and then in a crisp British accent, she said, “I really want to move in, but he won’t let me—he thinks it would be too serious for our relationship. But I like you.” And then to her boyfriend she said, “You should choose her!” He looked at me seriously for minute and said, “You’re a pile person, aren’t you? I bet you have lots of things in piles.” I was taken aback that he could guess that about me. How did he know? It turned out he didn’t choose me as a roommate, but his confident insight into my personality made a strong impression on me. His clarity about my type brought it into my focus for the first time. Since then I’ve found myself interested in personality typing systems—Myers-Briggs, astrology, Human Design System, the enneagram types, the doshas of ayurveda, the four temperaments—there are many systems that attempt to explain human complexity. I enjoy a conceptual map that offers an overview of the variations of personality and helps us have a little more empathy for each other despite our differences. Each type has a unique balance of strengths and weaknesses. For example, my penchant for accumulating half-read books in stacks around my bed is a messy habit. Yet it’s a result of a curiosity for unearthing related ideas and drawing connections. I need all those books around me in order to track a developing web of new thoughts. While the external result is a messy bedroom, inside my head there is increasing order and understanding of a specific subject. For this issue, Nina Shengold celebrates cram-packed spaces with a little review of Mary Randolph Carter’s new book Never Stop to Think…Do I have a Place for This? (see page 64) The book is full of lovely photographs of clutter, a paean to collecting that celebrates the passionate nature of those who are good at it. To understand Carter’s point of view, simply appreciate the titles of her other books: For the Love of Old: Living with Chipped, Frayed, Tarnished, Faded, Tattered, Worn and Weathered Things that Bring Comfort, Character and Joy to the Places We Call Home and A Perfectly Kept House is the Sign of A Misspent Life. The book comes with the promise on the cover “How to live creatively with collections, clutter, work, kids, pets, art, etc... and stop worrying about everything being perfectly in its place.” 6

ORDER IS MEANT TO SERVE OUR AIMS, AND SOME AIMS RESULT IN SURPRISING FORMS OF ORGANIZATION. I love this book, and Carter’s work, because it brings an underrepresented personality type to the fore. While Carter’s is a strong voice for historical objects as a repository for meaning, our culture has a distrust of clutter, often seeing it as moral weakness. Yet every personality’s strengths and weaknesses result in a unique handprint. After all, order is meant to serve our aims, and some aims result in surprising forms of organization. A very different approach to home life and order comes from Takaaki Kawabata. Ann Hutton visited the Japanese architect in the one-room home he created for his family of four (see page 27). Their lifestyle and the design of the house are interwoven. They practice a discipline of order, minimalism, and cascading use of space in which everything has a place, is taken out for use, then returned. The closet is a bedroom, is a playroom—but never at the same time. The result is a dynamic use of space, full of order and beauty. Most of the personality typing systems maintain that our type is fixed, and though there are healthier and less healthy versions of each type, no amount of wishing or trying can fundamentally change us. So whether you love the control that comes from having systems for every domestic chore; whether you focus on people rather than places; whether you can’t think about anything until everything is in it’s place; or you crave freedom to engage with materials at hand—your home will show it. Wherever you happen to fall on the spectrum of tidiness in your use of space, I hope you embrace your type (I keep trying). Our space is an aggregation of many habits and small choices we make. Like a snail, a conch, or a hermit crab, our space fits us.

Man of Steel ¬oshua Howe Design. The designer Joshua Howe says it’s his job to “flush out the most

pure state” of a component, to strip it down to its essentials. His work—lighting fixtures, furniture, and what he calls “effects” (steel trays, power bricks with dimmers)—finds the sleek side of industrial while adding a warmth from natural elements. Those steel trays, for instance, come with either leather or bungee cord handles. His hors d’oeuvres cart, made of acid-treated steel with a lacquer and wax finish, includes a warm, wood butcherblock insert. The O-Votto Chandelier, made of two types of steel, resembles a hanging branch with its long arms. Howe often uses concrete, that most basic of architectural elements, finding its grace and shine. His studio is in Chatham. A VAILABLE AT SEVERAL HUDSON SHOWROOMS, OR JOSHUAHOWEDESIGN.COM

Organic: Farmers and Chefs of the Hudson Valley PHOTOGRAPHY BY FRANCESCO MASTALIA, INTRODUCTION BY GAIL BUCKLAND, FOREWORD BY MARK RUFFALO, PREFACE BY JOAN DYE GUSSOW

powerHouse Books, 2014

Mastalia’s luminous photographs crosspollinate with words in this stirring and beautiful book. Actor-activist Ruffalo recalls his immigrant great-grandfather’s cherished garden, Buckland and Gussow offer invaluable insights on “Time. Nature. Photography,” and more than a hundred Hudson Valley farmers and chefs reflect on their lives and work. But Mastalia’s photographs star. Ambrotypes produced with 19th-century tools—a replica wet-plate camera and an 1870s lens—they give work-worn faces the textured patina of Civil War portraiture. Aesthetics and subject meld perfectly: These are 21st-century women and men reembracing the beauty of old ways, growing and preparing food that enriches us all. Buckland writes, “Sunlight and patience with a dash of love. What is true for the farmer is true for the photographer.” And a pure joy to witness.

Handmade Modern Rexhill Furniture. They may conjure midcentury furnishings, but each of

Rexhill Furniture’s pieces is handcrafted in their workshop in Beacon. They have an Erik Buch-inspired stool, with a sculpted leather top and rounded, tapered legs. A side table called Jax features a base of starlike shafts of tapered wood with a rounded glass top. The Rivers bookcase recalls Poul Cadovius shelves, with a closed compartment on the bottom. They also make humidors and jewelry boxes, as well as clocks, lamps, and mirrors. There are even hand tools, like a hand plane and a spoke shave, carved of wood themselves. Many of their pieces can be altered to suit customer needs, and they do custom work, including baby cradles and credenzas. The business is owned by a team of husband-and-wife designers, Justin and Paula King. Customers are encouraged to visit their workshop. Hudson Valley Chef’s Table: Extraordinary Recipes from Westchester to Columbia County JULIA SEXTON, PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANDRE BARANOWSKI

Globe Pequot Press, 2014

The Hudson Valley is fast becoming a culinary mecca for hipsters as well as traditionalists. This gorgeous, up-tothe-minute compendium of top-shelf restaurants and creative recipes may spur a northbound exodus by New York foodies. Sexton’s introduction starts with an exhortation to abandon New York City for new inspiration upstate, and her essays about buzzworthy chefs like Fish & Game’s Zak Pelaccio and inventive dishes like a carrot cutlet with lamb sauce by Blue Hill at Stone Barns’s Dan Barber point the way. Baranowski’s luscious photos of chefs, restaurant interiors, and perfectly plated meals may also spur a charge upriver; those who already live here will thrill at the roster of favorite venues from Yonkers to Hudson, and find more to try.

Spices & Seasons: Simple, Sustainable Indian Flavors RINKU BHATTACHARYA, FOREWORD BY SUVIR SARAN

Hippocrene Books, 2014

Grow local, eat global. “Cooking in Westchester” blogger and journalist Bhattacharya and her husband maintain a backyard garden which, supplemented by farmers market bounty and a “tool kit” of well-chosen spices and herbs, keeps their family “eating the rainbow” all year, with an accent on seasonal produce and minimum waste. Her straightforward, flexible approach to Indian cooking is “about flavors, freshness, and love,” urging home cooks to grind their own spices and use conveniences like slow-cookers to accommodate busy lives. Helpful indexes include pages of gluten-free, vegan, and vegetarian entries, listing recipes by main ingredients. Too much eggplant in your CSA share? Beets going wild? Try the smoky Baigan Bhartha or Cardamom-Scented Beet Halwa. Your palate will thank you.

Above the Fold Andrew Molleur. Ceramics usually come in rounded form, but

Kingston-based designer Andrew Molleur’s pieces are surprisingly geometrical. His influence, he says, is architecture, and it shows in the sleek lines of his pieces. The small origami containers and large “Origami” vase feature Escher-like triangular folds. The interlocking “Colorblock” vases come in saturated pastels of Bermuda green and titanium yellow. Molleur also makes modern art sculptures, some which call up a ceramic version of Jenga while others are reminiscent of Lego structures in their bold colors and delicate intertwined pieces. Vintage Stoves: A Love Story An Upstater’s Guide to Yesterday’s Oven By Susan Barnett | Illustrations by Michelle Williams

I

have been accused of living in the past. The fact is, I sometimes wish I could. I love the detail craftsmen used to put into the houses they built, the pride they took in making sure that form and function worked together. That may explain why I use a 1920 Singer treadle sewing machine. Why I whip cream with a red-handled, hand-cranked whisk. And why I own a 1954 Chambers stove that now dominates the kitchen of my 1970s ranch house. The other reason is it’s just gorgeous. You may be familiar with the daffodil-yellow Chambers ranges used by the ever-perky Rachel Ray. She bought that beauty at Zaborski’s in Kingston, I’m told, and it wasn’t cheap.

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT OWNING A VINTAGE STOVE

online at upstatehouse.com

Vintage stoves have personality. That’s a nice way of saying they’re quirky. The notnice way: They don’t always work the way you think they should. My oven lights well and holds the heat beautifully, but the temperature gauge doesn’t bear any resemblance to reality. Buy an oven thermometer and figure out how to correlate the stove’s reality with what the dial says.

I found a real temptation of a stove on Craigslist: an absolutely gorgeous 1935 Wedgewood with a mother-in-law cover to hide the burners if your housekeeping was less than stellar. But I waited. I thought about it. I did some research. And I decided to let it pass for a very practical reason: it wasn’t going to be easy to find replacement parts for it. Instead, I focused on vintage stoves that are more popular; the odds of my being able to get it repaired and find parts for it were a lot better. I decided on a Chambers, an innovative machine in its day. Manufactured from 1912 to 1955, its claim to fame was its ability to “Cook with the gas off!” That was, in fact, its trademarked advertising slogan.

Vintage stoves require extra safety consciousness. When the gas was hooked up to my old Chambers, I got a little freaked out. Al, my amazing plumber, told me: “If it was safe, they’d still be making them. If you want safe, buy a new stove.” To make a vintage stove a bit safer, install a gas shutoff behind the stove, and disconnect the pilot light. When you want to cook, turn on the burner, then use a match to light the stove.

Buy long matches or, better yet, a barbecue lighter. Your grandma may have used kitchen matches for her stove. They’ll keep your fingers a bit farther back from a burner that suddenly bursts into a lovely blue flame. But if you’re going to stick your arm into a Chambers Thermowell up to your elbow, you want a lot of room between that pilot light and you.

“I’D SAY THE THERMOWELL AND I HAVE SOME WORK TO DO BEFORE WE’RE ENTIRELY COMFORTABLE TOGETHER.” It works just like any other stove, but it can do much, much more. A Chambers is so heavily insulated that it’s designed to act like a slow cooker. Preheat it, cook for a short time in the oven or the Thermowell (more on that later) with the gas on, then turn the gas off and the heat is retained so well that the food continues to cook. It really works. I found my Chambers on Craigslist: a 1948 beauty that had belonged to the owner’s mother. It had been sitting in his garage for years. I spent a couple of hundred dollars getting someone to pick it up and deliver it, thus saving myself thousands in chiropractor bills. The stove sat my family room for about a year while I waited until I could remove a cabinet from the kitchen: It’s wider than an average modern range. I had only the seller’s word that it worked. I am lucky enough to know one of the best plumbers on the planet, who was willing to fiddle with the stove and spend time on the phone with Chambers restorers all over the country. Don’t ask me for his real name—I’ll call him Al, and, no, he doesn’t want to do it again. He hauled the Chambers into place and wire brushed the rusty burners, singeing his arm hair while adjusting the flames. At day’s end, I had two working burners and an oven. The other two burners were too rusty and crusty to do the job. My relative practicality paid off. I found a place called the Old Appliance Club online, and they found me two restored burners for $125. I suspect if I’d gotten the Wedgewood, I’d be out of luck. Our first meal cooked on the Chambers was spaghetti. I cooked the sauce on top of the stove. Our second functioning burner was the Thermowell, a deep well with an insulated lid and a special, locking sauce pot. The theory is that you boil the water, put your potatoes, noodles or other boiling-appropriate food item in the pot, lock it down, cover it up, then turn off the gas after 10 minutes. The Chambers cookbook I found online promised the food would cook “like magic!” If you like your pasta starchy and not quite cooked, it was truly magical. Otherwise, I’d say the well and I have some work to do before we’re entirely comfortable together. That’s the sacrifice you make in exchange for true love.

Find good stove support. Vintage stoves are full of personality. They’re all individuals and they demand that you get to know them before they work perfectly for you. If you buy wisely, you’ll find parts. But you’ll have a devil of a time finding someone to work on it for you. You can try The Stove Lady downstate. She’ll send a technician to work on your stove, but only if no one else has touched it.

Prepare your family for adventures in eating. Until you and your old stove get comfortable with each other, your cooking is going to be uneven. Don’t blame the stove. Instead, learn which rack height works best for what. Give yourself a while before you attempt to host a dinner party.

Kingston

City of Quiet Cool By Susan Piperato

I

n the fall of 2012, a young artist and a tattooist secretly began spraypainting red goats throughout Kingston’s Uptown Stockade district. Some condemned the red goats as vandalism; others lauded them as public art. Either way, the goats became something of a brand for Kingston; those same images of red goats showed up in far-off places like Brooklyn, Missouri, Miami, and even Canada, warranting a story in the New York Times. The goats, which could symbolize the city’s bloody history or its dogged resilience, got the message out: Kingston may have struggled, but it’s plenty cool. Mayor Shayne Gallo, who is on a mission to redevelop and enliven the city, says he appreciates the red goats as a free branding tool and calling card to the rest of the world. Today the red goat lives on as the logo for the Kingston Film Festival, now in its third year. That bloody history started when the city was the site of violence between Dutch settlers and the Esopus Indians in the early 1600s. In 1777, as New York State’s capital, Kingston was burned down by the British. Over 300 of the Uptown Stockade district’s original 18th-century stone buildings were lost, but 41 were reconstructed and remain. In the early 1900s the city thrived in manufacturing and as a transport center, but these industries declined by the time IBM arrived in 1955. Forty years later, IBM left, taking away 7,100 jobs and leaving 25 vacant buildings on a 256-acre campus.

Today, the campus is called TechCity, meant to be a small-business incubator. Though a welcome idea, the vision has yet to be fully realized, but residents remain hopeful. There are three main sections of Kingston. Midtown had been badly blighted, especially around crime-ridden Henry Street, except for a few brave institutions like the Ulster Performing Arts Center (UPAC) and the YMCA. It’s now safer and attracting new businesses and residents, thanks to the city’s plans to turn the area into a tech corridor. Uptown Kingston, with its narrow, walkable streets, is busy with small businesses, and it’s the more historically preserved area. The picturesque main drag of Wall Street has undergone a makeover, and the area’s culinary scene has blossomed. The Rondout district, also called the Strand, features a waterfront and marina where three bodies of water meet; it’s slated for an extensive redevelopment. Over the past decade, thanks to a crackdown on drugs, many of its formerly neglected storefronts have become art galleries, eateries, and shops offering goods from designer baby clothes to motorcycle upholstery. Much of the Victorian architecture was lost to urban renewal in the 1960s, but the Rondout still has attractive architectural offerings, and the neighborhood varies in topography, with some gently sloping hills. At night, the tree-lined, sloping streets can be as quiet as the countryside.

TRANSPORTATION: Kingston is accessible by Exit 19 on Interstate 87. Adirondack Trailways buses stop in Kingston. The nearest Amtrak station is 11 miles away in Rhinecliff. Nineteen miles away in Poughkeepsie, both Amtrak and MetroNorth stop. Ulster County Area Transit (UCAT) buses run throughout Kingston and to New Paltz and Saugerties.

THE SCENE In 2007, Bloomberg Businessweek named Kingston the fifth best place in the country for artists to live. The city’s arts scene is thriving and its music scene is taking off too, with the popular indie band Bishop Allen recently relocating to the city from Brooklyn and the continuing rise of the annual O+ Festival, a music and art event that promotes health insurance for artists. With its waterfront walkways and outdoor summer films and festivals, family-friendly Kingston isn’t vying for the title of “the New Brooklyn.” It doesn’t so much want to strut its stuff as it wants to be discovered, quietly, and given its due. THE MARKET Uptown is the most desirable neighborhood in the 8.5 miles of Kingston. It includes Colonial, Federal, Queen Anne, and grand Victorian houses, usually ranging from $250,000 to $400,000. Prices in the Rondout range from $65,000 for tiny brick Victorians and Federals to $300,000 for larger, wellmaintained Victorians. Rentals in both Uptown and the Rondout run from about $700 for a condominium to $1,300 for a full house or large apartment. In parts of still-blighted Midtown, low-priced, two-family homes needing minor to major work abound, but these bargains also come with urban problems like gangs and drugs, both of which are being targeted by the city’s revitalization plan, which will be implemented in stages over the next decade. Smaller, mostly Victorian homes can be had from as low as $100,000.

Poughkeepsie

L

A Rust Belt City Begins to Shine Again By Brian PJ Cronin | Photos by David Morris Cunningham

ike many cities and towns on the Hudson River, Poughkeepsie was once an economic powerhouse. Its strength came from its prime location as a shipping hub and the natural beauty of the Mid-Hudson Valley. Gilded Age families built mansions. Stately colleges were constructed. Then highways replaced rivers and canals as the country’s economic lifelines, and Poughkeepsie’s fortunes began to fall. Newly constructed shopping centers and plazas outside the city lured customers away from Poughkeepsie’s notorious traffic jams. Downtown emptied out as residents fled to the suburban ring—the Town of Poughkeepsie, as opposed to the City—surrounding it. Numerous urban renewal campaigns were waged unsuccessfully. Despite being home to Vassar College, the neighbor of the Culinary Institute of America, and the final stop on the Metro-North line, it seemed like Poughkeepsie just couldn’t recover. Slowly, though, Poughkeepsie’s fortunes have been changing. Median household income is climbing, the population is growing, and the city’s crime rates, after peaking in 2008, are finally trending south. A few years ago, Patti Smith told a crowd at New York City’s Bowery Ballroom to forsake that town and discover Poughkeepsie, a city that would embrace the young and struggling. There are a multitude of reasons for the amelioration, but it’s hard to overstate the shot in the arm that is the Walkway Over the Hudson. After years of work, this former railway bridge connecting Poughkeepsie to Highland opened in 2009 and became the longest elevated pedestrian bridge in the

PROXIMITY TO MAJOR CITIES: 70 miles from New York City; 80 miles from Albany

world. The Walkway attracts almost 700,000 visitors a year, only 25 percent of whom live within a day’s drive of the bridge. That means that the one thing that the city most lacked—tourism—is on the rise. Once those tourists leave the Walkway, there’s plenty to hold their attention. The historic 1869 Bardavon Opera House has put on concerts and showed films for decades. The Mid-Hudson Civic Center brings ice skating, conventions, wrestling matches, and concerts. Kids and teenagers flock to the Mid-Hudson Children’s Museum and its adjacent skate park. Foodies hit up the suddenly trendy spots. Artists and entrepreneurs take advantage of the city’s relative bargains to find housing, studios, and new business space. And when they do open the doors, people are finally once again waiting on the other side to come in. The city still has much work to do: Forbes magazine recently deemed it the 18th most miserable city in America—although it listed the city the year earlier as one of the best in which to raise a family. Thus is the conundrum of Poughkeepsie. Parts of Main Street remain blighted, but with the rest of the city slowly reshaping itself, hopefully the revitalization will spread, reestablishing the downtown focal point the city lacks. While the city’s reputation as a seedy haven for crime may be a bit overblown, it’s not altogether fictional either. Despite recent welcome improvements, Poughkeepsie still has the second highest crime rate in the Mid-Hudson Valley behind Newburgh, which is much higher than both the national and regional averages.

TRANSPORTATION: The city is accessible by the Noxon Road exit of the Taconic State Parkway. Both Metro-North and Amtrak trains stop downtown. The city runs its own bus system, and the Dutchess County-wide LOOP buses also make stops.

NEAREST HOSPITAL: Both Vassar Hospital and the MidHudson Regional Hospital of Westchester Medical Center (formerly St. Francis Hospital) are located within the city. SCHOOLS: The Poughkeepsie City School District has 5,000 students.

THE SCENE Poughkeepsie’s population continues to be both socioeconomically and racially diverse. Marist and Vassar colleges, located just beyond the city lines in the Town of Poughkeepsie, keep downtown bustling and provide jobs for the city’s burgeoning middle class. IBM remains the dominant employer in the region, but Poughkeepsie’s role as the county seat means plenty of professionals work and live downtown. While it doesn’t have the artsy reputation of cities like Hudson and Beacon, numerous galleries and performance venues make Poughkeepsie an underrated cultural destination. Schools, however, are still suffering; they earn a score of 2 out of 10 from GreatSchools.org. THE MARKET Because Poughkeepsie’s landscape has both urban and suburban areas, the real estate market has a wide variety of housing. There are seven historic districts, including the always-desirable Garfield Place district, the Academy Street district, and the DwightHooker Avenue district. They contain a mix of 19th-century styles like Queen Anne, Second Empire, Greek Revival, and Colonial Revival. Houses in these neighborhoods usually range between $500,000 and $850,000. On the other end of the spectrum, houses, condos, and co-ops can be had for under $100,000, many just a few blocks away from the historic districts. Those bargains come with inner-city problems, though: gangs and drugs and blight that probably make those investments iffy, at least until the revitalization reaches the hardest-hit corners of the city.

GREEN PIONEERING

An Architect Bids Farewell to His Innovative Home By Peter Aaron | Photos by Deborah DeGraffenreid

F

or architect Dennis Wedlick, selling the Kinderhook house he designed and has called home for over 20 years is bittersweet. A single viewing of the charming-yet-modern passive solar house makes it easy to understand why. “We’ve decided to pass it on because I’ve simply run out of ways to improve upon it,” Wedlick says. Wedlick specializes in green architecture that employs both passive and active solar design, adhering strictly to the highest standards of efficiency in both design and construction to minimize the need for fossil fuels. His house stays comfortable all year round, with minimal upkeep and cost. “During the months of April and May we actually have no energy bills,” Wedlick explains. In addition to providing it with its unique character, the house’s high, steeply gabled roof keeps it cool in the summer by drawing chilled air from the ground level and funneling out hot air through a window in the cathedral ceiling. An energy-efficient, high-velocity central air-conditioning system keeps the house cool when humidity is high. In winter, a centralized fireplace and radiant heat keep everything toasty. For added economy, Wedlick designed the house so that the heat could be entirely shut off without risking frozen pipes whenever he was traveling. It’s all about economical use of energy. It’s also about economical use of space. The house looks petite from the outside, but inside there are four sleeping areas: two master bedrooms, a guest bedroom, and a sleeping loft, comfortably sleeping eight. A turreted staircase leads to the two upper bedrooms and a guest loft (“Teen heaven!” Wedlick says). At the ground level is a master suite with a sitting area, bathroom, dressing room, and private terrace. “Our extended family can stay here without feeling like we’re on top of each other,” says Wedlick. “There’s a nook for reading and another nook for writing a letter and another nook for playing videos. That is what makes this small house act like a big one.” Custom cabinetry and builtins are found in nearly every room of the 1450-square-foot house, maximizing storage space. With Douglas fir ceilings and wainscoting, Carrera marble counters, Waterworks-brand fixtures, European appliances, and bronze hardware located throughout, one could call it “luxury green.” upstate HOUSE

Opposite: The barn/artist studio, with soaring 20-foot ceilings, a fully-equipped summer kitchen, and a full bath with outdoor shower, is the most unique feature of the property.

“I BELIEVE I TESTED EVERY GREEN ARCHITECTURE IDEA I COULD ON OUR PROPERTY IN KINDERHOOK.” Wedlick added the adjacent 1600-square-foot barn as a studio and party space. With 22-foot ceilings, this solar-powered, three-season structure has its own fully equipped kitchen and a full bath with outdoor shower. “The solar panels allow it to be a zero-energy structure,” says Wedlick. The barn produces more energy than it needs, and the excess is either used by the main house or sold back to the power company. “The electric meter will literally spin backward at times,” he explains. With massive barn doors on all four sides, the “studio barn” serves as a giant screened-in porch and event space in summer. “We had a concert in the barn with seating for 100 people,” says Wedlick. “The acoustics were wonderful.” Just over two hours from New York City and Boston, and outside the cultural and culinary capital of Hudson, the house is nestled in a secluded clearing surrounded by 11.5 wooded acres. The house and barn are set on a minimalist landscape co-designed by landscape designer Margie Ruddick that features stone walls, wildflower meadows, cutting flowers, herbs, and vegetables. Last year, the grounds were depicted on the cover of the New York Times Home section. Wedlick built the house for himself and his partner Curt DeVito in 1992, added to it every year, and finished completely renovating the entire property

a year ago. The house and barn have been featured in numerous books and magazines and won his firm of BarlisWedlick Architects (offices in Manhattan and Hudson) entry into the prestigious Smithsonian Cooper Hewitt Triennial National Design Award exhibition. It’s also the first design to encapsulate all the values of his four books on residential architecture, which promote regional character paired with a modern aesthetic, the smart use of limited space, and green architecture. “I believe I tested every green architecture idea I could on our property in Kinderhook,” says Wedlick. Wedlick and DeVito may be moving on but they’re not going far. The pair are relocating to another of Wedlick’s passive solar homes, in nearby Stanfordville. That home’s previous owners are moving out of state, and Wedlick will design a new green home for them there. “The Kinderhook house works really well for people who love to be close together and spend time with family and friends, with the knowledge that they’re having as little impact on the environment as possible,” says Wedlick. “Curt and I are really looking forward to making new friends with the next curators of this home and welcoming them into our extended family.”

One-Room

Traditional Japanese Living in Garrison By Ann Hutton | Photos by Steffen Thalemann

TAKAAKI AND CHRISTINA KAWABATA’S HOME is reminiscent of a traditional one-room farmhouse in rural Japan— known as a minka—somewhat like the one Takaaki inhabited as a child. There, three generations lived under one roof, enjoying the strong bond created by sharing a common space. The Kawabatas’ open and light-filled 1,200-square-foot-home, tucked into the foothills above the Town of Garrison, reflects this history.

upstate HOUSE

| FALL 2014 • 2 7

When Taka first saw the drab 1960s log cabin, however, he was disappointed. He and Christina had dreamed of leaving Brooklyn for what he called “a small house with big land.” Their four-year-long search for property in a neighborhood with good schools and lots of yard space had taken them house shopping all over New Jersey and into upstate New York. This one had few windows and a dark interior with multiple cell-like rooms. But Takaaki, a senior associate at Manhattan architecture and interior design firm Janson Goldstein and a third-generation architect, began to consider the possibilities. “On the train back to New York, I started to draw,” he recalls. “I called my wife and told her, ‘It’s away from major roads and the price

28

is good.’” At $335,000, the property, though in need of renovation, looked like a good deal. With a budget of $50,000 for added TLC, and help from friends and neighbors, it might just work out, he thought. After consulting an engineer to determine architectural feasibility, Takaaki gutted the structure to make one large room. One exterior wall was bumped out and the expansion was supported by a two-ton beam spanning the fourteenfoot-high cathedral ceiling. He brightened the space by adding walls of glass on two sides and windows wrapping around the others, as well as a row of skylights along the ceiling. He replaced the decorative log cabin siding with black cedar, common to Japanese farmhouses, and stained it dark.

In traditional open-plan Japanese houses, one room has many uses, but a feeling of orderliness and calm prevails. At the Kawabatas’, the family uses the main space for cooking and eating, doing their crafts and working at their custom-made dining table. They keep the kids’ toys in a large basket, taking them out one at a time and then putting them back right away. At night, the parents sleep in a loft above the kitchen area, and the kids, six-year-old Tozai and three-year-old Akari, sleep on futon mattresses tucked behind a shoji-like screen made of nylon strings on the main floor; the futons are stored in the loft during the day. Christina runs Takatina, her interior design firm, from the basement office, but the remainder of the house (minus the bathroom) is open.

Clockwise from top left: Takaaki Kawabata, senior associate at Janson Goldstein, an architectural design firm in Manhattan, followed his father and grandfather into the business; Clean lines dominate the seating area with pieces that can easily be rearranged to fit the occasion. The original stone fireplace has a contemporary facelift. Shelving hides between the faux wall and the exterior one; Taka and Christina’s bedroom loft—a private retreat; Open shelving in the kitchen, open ceiling under the loft; Natural light penetrates the space through a north facing skylight at the peak of the 14’ high cathedral ceiling; The Kawabata family escaped Brooklyn for a family home with growing room.

That orderliness is reflected in aesthetic choices, too: white walls and darkstained oak floors in the main room and gray Italian tile in the bathroom and shower stall. Their furnishings are spare and uncluttered, and the family’s few possessions have become decorative elements: Kitchenware and household goods are stored in the open, and the couple rotates hangings of their quirky collection of artwork. Some pieces, like the kitchen countertop and stainless steel sink, came right off the rack at Home Depot. The original fireplace is surrounded by a freestanding white wall. With two-and-a-half acres of hillside property surrounding the house, there is room to expand. Takaaki plans to increase the living space and add a deck as the kids get older. For now, no walls separate the functions of everyday living, and the kids enjoy the proximity of their parents. “This is how I grew up,” he says. “We don’t have a TV, so we constantly talk. I think our family bond will remain strong.” 30

T

he family of two doctors, two children, and two dogs of extremely different sizes—picture a purse puppy and a small pony—didn’t plan to build when they decided to move upstate from Brooklyn. “Our children were getting ready to start junior high, and we figured it was time to get out of the city,” their mother says. “We liked New Paltz. But when we looked for a house to buy, we just couldn’t find one we liked.” Having lived in many houses, the wife knew what pleased her: modern homes that managed to maintain a sense of warmth, the kinds that populated her favorite shelter magazine. “When I brought home a copy of Dwell magazine four years ago, we fell in love,” she says. Until they could find the right place, they rented. But instead of a house, they found a piece of land above the Wallkill River. Tucked into the woods, the land offered two views: the river and the Shawangunk Ridge. “We saw this site and that was it,” she says. Now for the house. On the way home that same day, she and her husband met with Jan and Greg Buhler of Atlantic Custom Homes in Cold Spring, the area dealer for Lindal Cedar Homes. For almost 70 years, Lindal has created designs for preengineered, on-site-constructed post-and-beam homes. The owners chose a plan from the Turkel Design Lindals for the Dwell Homes Collection. upstate HOUSE

The 2,300-square-foot floor plan has three bedrooms and a walk-out lower level, with clean lines and bright, open spaces; a sleek, wood-and-glass house with spare, minimalist lines. Atlantic Custom Homes ordered all the materials, from wood and windows to door handles. “It’s a greener way to build,” Jan Buhler says. “Everything is engineered and numbered, then shipped by rail.” The Buhlers, architect Joel Turkel, and the couple went through the design process in a series of online meetings. They changed the placement of a wall to maximize access to the screened-in living area. “It’s not just paper plans,” explains Greg Buhler. “It’s a 3-D walk-through. It takes a lot of the guesswork out of the process. It’s very predictable.” That left the owners free to focus on the personal touches. “I had time because I didn’t have to choose door handles and things like that,” one of the doctors says. “The lighting, the cabinets, the appliances, the built-ins—that was all us. And it was important to us to include the work of local craftsmen.” For instance, Jeff “Mac” McKelvey at Ulster County Ironworks in New Paltz fashioned an industrial-looking stand for a bathroom sink, some shelves, a cable rail and posts, iron dividers in the concrete floors, and the stair railing. Johnny Poux Design of Kingston created one curved sheet of sapeli wood to create a dining nook modeled after a booth at Water Street Market in New Paltz. The owners furnished the space with an eclectic combination of heirloom pieces and furniture they made or bought from Ikea. An antique chair handed down from a grandmother sports bright paint and contemporary fabric, adding

The walkway connects the master bedroom with the children’s rooms. The span is brightened by lots of natural light and a chandelier that combines futuristic and industrial aesthetics; More than just a porch, the three season room off the living area is the family’s gathering spot. The large table allows dining with a view of the river, while a large cushioned seat made by the owners is perfect for reading, lounging, or even sleeping on warm summer nights. A wall of glass doors slides aside to open the space to the rest of the house and take advantage of cool breezes; The open concept kitchen is designed with entertaining and family life in mind. a warm touch to the neighboring sleek, contemporary sofa. In the kitchen, a bright pink glass dome lights the work area, while a large, delicate, steel-armed chandelier lights the living area and its ultra modern glass-front fireplace. While the owners have found a way to combine functional, industrial modernism with a warmth that can only be described as cozy, the house is still a work in progress. They plan to finish landscaping, put in a pool, and hope to eventually install solar panels and make it a zero-energy home. “This is our last home,” the owner says. “I have unsubscribed from all the design magazines.”

H

ilary Finn thought she’d be a sculptor or a painter when she studied at SUNY New Paltz. Then she found her true media: not just wood and stone but water, light, flowers, and leaves. Since 2000, she has been renewing outdoor spaces as a garden designer, recently adding outdoor furniture design to her list of talents. “My jumping-off point is the architecture that I’m working with,” she says. “I like simple, direct design—utilitarian, but with a decorative element.” Finn divides her time between Brooklyn, New Paltz, and an island in Maine with no cell service, a place with what she calls “controlled wild.” We spoke with Finn about her motivation, inspirations, and methods.

“IN THE COUNTRY WE ARE CREATING SPACES TO LIVE WITHIN THE LARGER LANDSCAPE.” How did your fascination with gardens begin? My parents were fanatical about old houses. They’d buy beautiful, dilapidated ones they could get for a good price. I was always intrigued by the skeletal remnants of the old gardens, the old walls and pathways. When I was seven, we lived in a huge whaling captain’s house in New Bedford, Massachusetts. It had the relics of an old, formal garden. I had a secret corner behind some hedges where I first experimented with transplanting and growing. It was at that house that I developed my fondness for lily of the valley, lilacs, herringbone brick patterns, and old granite walls. How did you come to do this professionally? After college, I worked in visual merchandising and decorative painting and studied landscape design at the New York Botanical Garden. I started my own company 14 years ago, doing small-scale garden design. It gradually developed into larger projects. Are you influenced by any particular garden style? I love looking at historic gardens from everywhere, but they have to look like they belong. You might take elements and spirit from a Japanese garden, but it’s not my style to try to replicate that in the Hudson Valley or Brooklyn. Is working in the Hudson Valley different from working in Brooklyn? Deer! Beyond that, the main difference is the amount and shape of space. In the city, almost everything is a rectangle. And in New York we are creating privacy. In the country we are creating spaces to live within the larger landscape. 38

Above (clockwise from top left): Utilitarian concrete and native stone meld a modern pool to a 200-year-old farmhouse; White cosmos will self-seed, and will bloom until frost strikes; “In a patio you don’t want to feel superexposed, but you want to feel a connection with what is beyond,” says Finn; Anise hyssop and Annabelle hydrangea. “I’m not superstrict about it, but I’ve been using native plants more and more.”

What’s the first thing you consider on a new job? Often, owners haven’t done much in the way of connecting the land to how they live in the house: the interaction between inside and outside, the journey from where they park to the house, what they see when they look out the window, how they want to extend their living space outside. They’ll also be looking at it in winter months, which can be a gorgeous time if the garden has structure that will remain: lines, trees, evergreens, hedges, branching patterns. My ideal time to start working is in the fall. Then you can take time over the winter to contemplate and design in a logical way. The gardens at Mohonk are a wonderful example of planning for the future with what you do in the present. The plantings around their spa extension are just starting to mature and meld to the land. Beautiful. What are some of your favorite elements to incorporate? The challenge is to create something to find. That doesn’t have to be a highticket item; it could be a view, or a planting, or a place to sit, just so you go through something to this “wow” moment. It can be hard to convince people not to reveal everything from the window, but if the encore came first, why would you sit through the show?

BOOK REVIEW

Pile-High Club If the title of the book makes you smile with recognition (and maybe a hint of defiance), this paean to stylish antiminimalism belongs on your coffee table, surrounded by beloved collections of whatever floats your boat. The legend “Once upon a time there was a girl who loved too many things” appears in red boldface type across from a photo of the author perching on a library ladder in front of floor-to-ceiling shelves stuffed with books, paintings, vintage LPs…and is that a child-size John Deere tractor? If you live this way, or aspire to, meet your tribe. Carter profiles 20 obsessive collectors, from “Queen of Muchness” Stephanie Lloyd to “Shipshape” Doug DeLuca. It’s not clutter, it’s “the evidence of life,” and in the right hands, it can be glorious: “If there’s a place for it in your heart, there’s a place for it in your home.”
