To the Upstate Medical University Graduating Class of 2021:

iving through a pandemic is likely not how you expected to finish your last semesters at Upstate Medical University, nor how you expected to start your life after graduation. Major milestone celebrations over the 13 months have been postponed, cancelled, or modified, including commencements. I know this is not the ideal outcome after years of hard work and studying, but this does not diminish your tremendous accomplishment. Despite all the challenges thrown at you and having more than a year at Upstate unceremoniously turned upside-down, you persevered to earn your degree. Although we were not able to celebrate your graduation with all the normal pomp and circumstance it so rightfully deserves, let it be known that we are all so proud of the Class of 2021—the persistence, determination, and grit you have shown to complete your studies amidst a number of obstacles is exemplary. As you look toward the future, know your SUNY education has prepared you to succeed. The Upstate Class of 2021 will continue the SUNY legacy of changing the world no matter where you go, and I look forward to seeing all that you accomplish. You began your journey here to make the world a better place. And I know you will. Now, as you enter your professions in the midst of a pandemic, your brilliance, creativity and commitment to serve is needed more than ever. I am confident that you will rise to this challenge today and through the course of your career. Today’s milestone also recognizes the dedication of faculty and staff who have inspired and encouraged you. Honorary Degree Recipient

Dr. Otis W. Brawley is a globally recognized expert in cancer screening, prevention and treatment, and the design of trials to assess them. His work focuses on how to close racial, economic and social inequities in the treatment of cancer. He concentrates on the practice of evidence based medicine and efficiency in healthcare. His work in cancer screening relates to his interest in reducing health disparities by making healthcare more efficient. He has defined better explanations of the real benefits and limitations of science-directed screening programs to physicians, the lay public and policy makers. His balanced approach to prostate cancer screening and treatment recognizes the potential for benefits and risks, and allows greater patient involvement for the process. In the Detroit neighborhood where Dr. Brawley grew up, he saw how the lack of health care on those in his community had its impact. It was while he was still in high Otis W. Brawley, MD, MACP, FASCO, FACE school, volunteering at an area Veterans Administration Hospital that he was inspired by Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of the scientists and physicians there. A self-described “science nerd,” Dr. Brawley Oncology and Epidemiology, Johns Hopkins gravitated toward research because it blends the practice of medicine with pure science. University Associate Director, Community Outreach Today, he leads a broad interdisciplinary research effort focused on cancer health and Engagement at the Sidney Kimmel disparities. Comprehensive Cancer Center, Johns Hopkins University After receiving both his undergraduate and medical degrees at the University of Chicago, Dr. Brawley completed a residency in internal medicine at Case Western Reserve and a fellowship in medical oncology at the National Cancer Institute. Following his fellowship, he remained at the National Cancer Institute as an oncologist and senior investigator and also served as its director of the Office of Special Populations until 2001. His work there, and for Surgeon General David Satcher, demonstrated differing healthcare outcomes by race, socioeconomic status, and geography. At that time, he moved to Atlanta to become director of the Georgia Cancer Center and Chief of Hematology and Oncology at Grady Memorial Hospital and professor of hematology, oncology, medicine and epidemiology at Emory University. From 1988 until 2001, Dr. Brawley served as an active duty, tenured commissioned officer, in the U.S. Public Health Service and rose to the rank of captain. From 2001 until 2014, he served as a reserve commissioned officer in the U.S. Public Health Service, and was deployed for active duty to help with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in Southern Louisiana, in 2006. From 2007 to 2018, Dr. Brawley was chief medical and scientific officer of the American Cancer Society, where he oversaw the largest private program funding cancer research in the United States. While there, he was responsible for promoting the goals of cancer prevention, early detection, and quality treatment through cancer research and education. He championed efforts to decrease smoking, implement other lifestyle risk reduction programs, provide critical support to cancer patients, and concentrate cancer control efforts where they could be most effective. For two decades, Dr. Brawley has served on numerous federal and private advisory boards and panels, including the Surgeon General’s Task Force on Cancer Health Disparities through the Department of Health and Human Services and the Board of Regents Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in the Department of Defense, where he was nominated by the U.S. president and confirmed by the Senate. He was appointed as a Georgia Cancer Coalition Scholar and was given the Key to St. Bernard Parish and the U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) Meritorious Service Medal for efforts during Hurricane Katrina. He received the Department of Defense Uniformed Services University Distinguished Service Award and the American Medical Association Distinguished Service Award. He was recently given the Martin D. Abeloff Award for Excellence in Public Health and Cancer Control from the Maryland State Council of Cancer Control. His published works deal with challenging topics of the harms of overdiagnosis, overtreatment, and complications of treatment due to cancer screening. His book entitled “How We Do Harm: A Doctor Breaks Ranks About Being Sick in America” emphasizes a principle that guide us at Upstate and across the country and the world: use resources wisely with allegiance to the science, and become wiser in our use of health care, an inspiration that will benefit all of our faculty and staff and our graduates.

Honorary Degree Recipient Dr. Augustus A. White is an internationally known physician, and a widely published authority on biomechanics of the spine, fracture healing and spinal care. For the past five decades, Dr. White has also committed himself to issues of diversity, and is nationally recognized for his work in medical education and health care disparities. Dr. White was the first African American to graduate from Stanford Medical School in 1961 and become a surgical resident at Yale-New Haven Hospital in 1963. Even after he became a renowned physician, there were times when bigoted patients did not want Dr. White to treat them, friends said. But Dr. White remained an unfailing optimist. He has quietly helped push back medicine's color line while becoming one of the foremost orthopedic surgeons in the world. A noted author who founded Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center's academic orthopedic program, Dr. White has been a Augustus A. White, III, MD, leading advocate for racial equality and cultural sensitivity training at Harvard, Brown PhD University, Yale University and orthopedics nationally. Harvard University Dr. White grew up in Memphis, Tennessee, the son of a doctor and a librarian. He Director, Culturally Competent Care Education Program attended segregated schools before the Brown vs. Board of Education decision, and Ellen and Melvin Gordon Distinguished later graduated from the private Mount Herman School in Massachusetts, in 1953. He Professor of Medical Education completed his pre-medical studies cum laude with High Honors in Psychology at Brown Professor, Orthopaedic Surgery Former Professor, Harvard-MIT Division of University in 1957. A standout football player there, he decided to pledge the Delta Health Sciences and Technology Upsilon (DU) fraternity, the first African American ever to do so. Dissuaded by friends, Former Advisory Dean, William Augustus Hinton Society he pledged anyway, became a brother, and was so popular that by his senior year he was Former Professor, Harvard/MIT Division of elected president. Health Sciences and Technology Being a trailblazer has not always been easy. In 1956, DU officials chose to cancel Orthopaedic Surgeon-in-Chief Emeritus, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center their national convention rather that allow a Black man to attend. It wasn’t until three decades later that he received his invitation. After completing his residency, he joined the U.S. Army Medical Corps as a combat surgeon in Vietnam, from 1966-1967; he was awarded the Bronze Star for bravery while treating soldiers injured in battle and patients in a leper colony. Following that, he studied at the University of Gothenburg and at the Karolinska Institute where he obtained a PhD for research on the biomechanics of the spine in 1970. He became full professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Yale in 1977, and director of the Engineering Laboratory for Musculoskeletal Disease. Over the years, he has trained 25 spine surgeons in the Daniel E. Hogan Spine Fellowship Program. While his professional life has drawn him to classroom, laboratory and lecture hall, he is most committed to direct patient care. Stimulated by a desire to better meet the challenges in health care management, he completed the Advanced Management Program at the Harvard Business School where he was invited by his classmates to speak at the graduation ceremonies. He was the Orthopaedic Surgeon-in-Chief at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, MA, for 13 years. A winner of numerous prestigious awards, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons has presented Dr. White with its Diversity Award and the William W. Tipton, Jr., MD Leadership Award. He is the first individual to receive both these awards. In 2018, the annual issue of The Orthopaedic Journal at Harvard Medical School was dedicated to him, recognizing his longstanding accomplishments at Harvard. That same year, he received the Meritorious Achievement Award from the National Medical Association for his exceptional work in medicine. In 2020, he was named the recipient of the J. Robert Gladden Orthopaedic Society Alvin H. Crawford, MD Mentoring Award and the Feagin Alumni Network Award. He recently became a member of The HistoryMakers MedicalMakers Advisory Board. Notably, he has received eight Honorary Degrees throughout the course of his career. He has authored “The Clinical Biomechanics of the Spine” and "Seeing Patients: A Surgeon’s Story of Race and Medical Bias.” He has also coauthored a timely book “Overcoming: Lessons in Triumphing Over Adversity and the Power of Our Common Humanity.” In addition to his lofty achievements and legendary calm demeanor, he remains humble to the core. He may be most beloved for serving as guidance counselor and father figure to countless individuals. “He burns with the desire to help people make the world a better place,” say students, friends and colleagues.

Dr. Camara Jones is a family physician, epidemiologist and past president of the American Public Health Association. Her work focuses on naming, measuring and addressing the impacts of racism on the health and well-being of the nation. She seeks to broaden the national health debate to include universal access to high quality health care and also increase attention to the social determinants of health and equity. She recently completed her tenure as the 2019-2020 Evelyn Green Davis Fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University and is currently a presidential visiting fellow at the Yale School of Medicine in the Department of Medicine and the Office of Health Equity Research. Dr. Jones will serve as the 2021-2022 UCSF Presidential Camara Phyllis Jones, MD, Chair at the University of California San Francisco. MPH, PhD The oldest of three girls, she and her sisters (who are twins one year younger) were all Adjunct Professor, Rollins School of Public subtly but successfully inspired, especially by their mother, to pursue careers as doctors. Her Health, Emory University, Department of mother thought that medicine was the best way for anyone to make a contribution to Behavioral Sciences and Health Education and the Department of Epidemiology humanity, Dr. Jones recalls. Jones’ mother was a mathematics educator and high school Adjunct Associate Professor, Morehouse principal in the Detroit Public Schools who had wanted to become a doctor when she was School of Medicine, Department of Community Health and Preventive Medicine younger but had been told that women weren’t doctors. Jones’ father was a general surgeon who provided the quiet example of medicine as community service. A public health leader, Dr. Jones is valued for her creativity and intellectual agility. As a methodologist, she has developed new ways for comparing data to investigate population-level risk factors and propose population-level interventions. As a social epidemiologist, her work on "race"-associated differences in health outcomes goes beyond simply documenting those differences to vigorously investigating the structural causes of the differences. As a teacher, her allegories on "race" and racism illuminate topics that are otherwise difficult for many Americans to understand or discuss. She aims to catalyze a National Campaign Against Racism that will mobilize and engage all Americans. Dr. Jones was an assistant professor at the Harvard School of Public Health from 1994 to 2000, before being recruited to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2000 to 2014, where she served as a medical officer and research director on Social Determinants of Health and Equity. Most recently, she was a senior fellow at the Satcher Health Leadership Institute and the Cardiovascular Research Institute at the Morehouse School of Medicine from 2013 to 2019. She has been elected to service on many professional boards, including the Board of Directors of the American College of Epidemiology, the Executive Board of the American Public Health Association, and the Board of Directors of the National Black Women’s Health Project and currently serves on the Board of Directors of the DeKalb County (Georgia) Board of Health and on the National Board of Public Health Examiners. She is also actively sought as a contributor to national efforts to eliminate health disparities and achieve health equity in her current and past roles. Her many honors include the Paul Revere Award, a lifetime achievement award from the Massachusetts Public Health Association (2020): the Wellesley Alumnae Achievement Award (Wellesley College’s highest alumnae honor, 2018), the John Snow Award (given in recognition of “enduring contributions to public health through epidemiologic methods and practice” by the American Public Health Association’s Epidemiology Section and the Royal Society for Public Health, 2011), and awards named after luminaries David Satcher (2003), Hildrus A. Poindexter (2009), Paul Cornely (2016), Shirley Nathan Pulliam (2016), Louis Stokes (2018), Frances Borden-Hubbard (2018), and Cato T. Laurencin (2018). Lauded for her compelling clarity on issues of “race” and racism, she has delivered eight Commencement Addresses over the past several years and was also awarded an honorary Doctor of Science degree by the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in 2016. Committed to public service, she is actively involved on many national advisory panels and committees. She sits on many prestigious editorial boards and is a prolific author. A powerful and inciteful speaker, she is a master storyteller who uses allegories to discuss race and racism in the United States, and to empower people to take action to reduce racism and its impact on health. Dr. Jones earned her BA in Molecular Biology from Wellesley College, her MD from the Stanford University School of Medicine, and both her Master of Public Health and her PhD in Epidemiology from the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health. She also completed residency training in General Preventive Medicine at Johns Hopkins and in Family Practice at the Residency Program in Social Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center.

From the Dean

Dear Graduates of 2021: ongratulations as you complete your education here at Upstate Medical University College of Nursing! You have successfully navigated your next step forward during one of the most challenging times in history, and we are incredibly proud to have you as graduates and professional colleagues. This unprecedented time has called for your continuous acts of commitment, bravery, innovation, generosity of spirit and knowledge that exemplify the greatest and most worthwhile profession in nursing. The past year of your journey has been unique, formative, and memorable. Now more than ever, nursing is an inspirational profession that holds a special status, one which also comes with a special responsibility to always protect and be responsive to those that depend upon us for care. Your actions have demonstrated that you embrace this responsibility. A decade ago, the Institute of Medicine report called for a doubling of nursing doctorates by 2020 and for 80% of the nursing workforce to be baccalaureate prepared by that same date. As we closed out 2020, our profession did not reach those benchmarks in the suggested timeframe. You may wonder why is this important, and how this may affect your future as a nurse. You are a critically important front line to the healthcare team. Nurses in New York State are leading the way on this very long journey that started with the American Nurses Association (ANA) House of Delegates in 1964. Key stakeholders in the push to baccalaureate entry into nursing felt strongly that in order to achieve positive patient outcomes, the nurse of the future must be prepared to work in partnership with multiple disciplines as a collaborator and manager of complex patients. Additionally, nurses must possess increased expertise and knowledge in navigating the complexity of our health care system, as well as be well prepared to utilize rapidly expanding and evolving technology in the healthcare arena. There is a continuous responsibility that falls upon all of us to reach higher, step forward, and to continue the journey in your professional education. Those of you who have achieved your baccalaureate or master’s degrees today are inspired to plan for further graduate studies. Those who have achieved your doctoral degree are charged to inspire, encourage and mentor other nurses along the path, growing knowledge, collaboration and innovation. You are all pivotal pieces of the healthcare team, but above all, you are nurses, who have shown in this pivotal time that you stand strong, and stand together. The world will continue to need your leadership and dedication in the years to come to sustain the presence of nursing in our global community, educational environments, and to help solve the problems of the fragmented healthcare system and the challenges ahead. Nurses of the future will need to speak more forcefully and persuasively about the problems that are encountered in every day practice. Speaking out not only about the issues of delivery of care within our organizations but looking to the broader community picture of neighborhoods, states, countries and globally to be heard on the areas of social and political policy that impact the care that nurses provide regardless of their duty station. Nurses represent the largest segment of the healthcare workforce. Your large collective voice has proven that you can indeed move mountains! I join each member of the Upstate family in wishing you the very best for your future, and ask that you keep in touch with the College as you move forward in your professional pursuits. Edward Thompson Established in honor of Dr. John Bernard Henry, past president of SUNY Upstate Medical University, this award is given to a student who completed an outstanding paper, project or other exceptional accomplishment.

Grant Scholars The College of Nursing has been awarded three Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) grants. These grants provide opportunities for students to receive financial assistance to continue their education and to obtain specialized training.

BHWET The goal of the Behavioral Health Workforce and Education Training (BHWET) grant is to expand the flow of behavioral health care providers into target communities by increasing the number of trained Family Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (FPMHNP) committed to working with behavioral health patients in rural and medically underserved communities. Grant scholars receive enhanced education in the areas of interprofessional collaboration, social determinants of health, common comorbid medical/psychiatric problems, telepsychiatry, and the opioid epidemic. SUNY Upstate Medical University | College of Nursing OSUD The goal of the Opioid and Substance Use Disorders (OSUD) grant is to support increasing the number of skilled nurse practitioners available to address the opioid crisis. The award provides funding to support the creation of a new supplemental curriculum to train psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner students on how to treat patients with opioid and substance abuse disorders. ANEW The Advanced Nursing Education Workforce (ANEW) grant supports academic clinical partnerships to educate primary care nurse practitioners to practice in rural and underserved communities, thereby increasing access to needed primary medical care for these populations. The curriculum includes cultural competency training, to provide students with additional education on how the culture of rural or underserved areas can affect people and their health. Scholars also receive telehealth training to prepare them for the utilization of new medical technologies and virtual visits. Omicron at Large Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society Sigma Theta Tau International is the honor society dedicated to improving global health through nursing scholarship, research and leadership. Founded in 1922 by six nurses at the former Indiana University Training School for Nurses, Sigma Theta Tau currently has over 240,000 nurse scholars as members. Omicron Alpha was chartered as a chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International on June 8, 1996. Omicron Alpha embraces the global mission of Sigma Theta Tau International, and consistent with the mission of growth, development and sharing of nursing knowledge, the Chapter is dedicated to the improvement of health of people in Central New York and beyond. Omicron Alpha is committed to advancing nursing leadership, scholarship, and research in clinical practice and in public policy. The Omicron Alpha Chapter merged with Omicron at Large on April 20, 2018. n this momentous day we celebrate the achievements of a group of truly remarkable human beings. Graduates, you have been tested in unprecedented ways, and you have persevered. Through personal grit and the support of others you have made it to this point of entrance to your chosen careers. I am thrilled for you! Please take time to feel the joy, treasure the moment, and reflect on how you pushed through the challenging points in your studies to emerge here. You have gained the knowledge and skills that form the foundation of your chosen profession and are prepared to move into work that will enhance the health and well-being of your patients and community. This pandemic has taught us the value of human connectivity, and we have learned to be together while apart to a far greater extent than we ever imagined, both in our personal and professional lives. While students had to adjust to remote and hybrid learning, professors also had to pivot dramatically, altering their instruction to meet the challenges of the day. Today as we celebrate our graduates, we also celebrate the friends, family and faculty who stood beside them to make this all possible – thank you for all you have done to support our graduates. We know now more than ever the need for comprehensive health care teams, and each College of Health Professions graduate is a vital part of that team. The Gold Humanism Honor Society The Gold Humanism Honor Society honors senior medical students for “demonstrated excellence in clinical care, leadership, compassion and dedication to service.” The Society was organized by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation to elevate the values of humanism and professionalism within the field of medicine and its constituent institutions. The Rural Medical Education (RMED) Program An elective experience that allows third-year medical students the opportunity to live and train in small-town communities. Physician’s Oath THE PHYSICIAN’S OATH, IN THE TRADITION OF HIPPOCRATES AND ELIZABETH BLACKWELL

I enthusiastically commit my life to serving patients. I will practice my profession with integrity, dignity, and humility. The welfare of my patients will be my first consideration, and I will advocate for them; may I never see in the patient anything but a fellow human in need. I will treat all patients with compassion, no matter how much they differ from me. I will preserve my patients’ confidentiality and respect my patients’ choices. I will work together with my colleagues in service of our patients. I will acknowledge my limits, maintain my skills, and seek help when needed. I will give to my teachers the respect and gratitude that is their due, be a role model for students, and share my knowledge with patients and colleagues. I make these promises solemnly, freely, and upon my honor. May I keep this oath and, in so doing, experience the joy of healing those who seek my help. There is no single oath that physicians take upon receiving their degrees. The Hippocratic Oath, the most well-known formulation, was derived from the 4th century BCE writings of Hippocrates, a Greek physician. “The Physician’s Oath, in the Tradition of Hippocrates and Elizabeth Blackwell” is drawn from several sources. Its major source is the Declaration of Geneva, written after World War II. In the aftermath of the medical crimes of Nazi physicians, the Declaration of Geneva revised the Hippocratic Oath to state more clearly the physician’s dedication to medicine’s humanitarian goals. The Physician’s Oath also includes concepts from the Prayer of Maimonides, Louis Lasagna’s 1964 revision of the Hippocratic Oath, and the writings of Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell, the first American woman awarded a medical degree, which she accomplished at Geneva Medical College, the forerunner of SUNY Upstate College of Medicine. History he State University of New York Upstate Medical University is one of 140 academic medical centers in the United States. Such centers lead the nation in conducting medical research, educating health professionals and providing the most advanced care to patients. The mission of Upstate Medical University is to improve the health of the communities it serves through education, biomedical research and health care.

Through its four colleges — Medicine, Graduate Studies, Nursing and Health Professions — Upstate Medical University educates physicians, research scientists, nurses and health care professionals. Upstate’s clinical system comprises Upstate University Hospital with its Downtown and Community campuses, the region’s only children’s hospital, an extensive network of specialty treatment services and the Upstate Cancer Center that is the region’s only comprehensive outpatient resource for the treatment of cancer and blood disorders for both adults and children. With its four colleges and robust research programs, Upstate Medical University is the region’s largest employer and serves as a source of medical and health leadership for Central New York and beyond. Upstate Medical University traces its history to 1834. Then, six faculty members at Geneva College founded a medical school at this small liberal arts college in upstate New York. While still in its infancy, the Geneva Medical School gained the distinction of awarding an MD degree to Elizabeth Blackwell — the first woman to become a physician in the United States. In 1871, the medical school dean, John Towler, bought the college’s medical library, anatomical museum and other tangible assets. Acting as a private citizen, Towler, along with Frederick Hyde, another former Geneva faculty member, approached Syracuse University and offered to donate these materials on the condition that Syracuse University immediately establish and maintain a regular medical college consistent with American Medical Association standards. The Geneva Medical faculty joined the Syracuse University College of Physicians and Surgeons, later known as the College of Medicine. In 1876, another trailblazer, Sarah Loguen, graduated from the medical college, becoming one of the nation’s first African American women physicians and the first woman doctor in what is now the Dominican Republic. In 1950, the Syracuse University College of Medicine was transferred to the newly organized State University of New York where it was known as Upstate Medical Center. On December 10, 1953, the central SUNY administration approved a plan to develop programs to award MS and PhD degrees in biosciences at its two medical schools. In 2009, the master’s in public health (MPH) program was introduced in the College of Medicine, with the intention of preparing students for service, teaching and research careers in public health. Today, many students seek the MPH in combination with other post-graduate degrees. In 1952, graduate studies began at Upstate, with 18 students and new courses in anatomy, biochemistry, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology and physiology. The Syracuse University College of Medicine had actually begun graduate education in the biosciences in this campus in 1947 by offering the PhD in

biochemistry, but that degree was given by the university as a whole, not by the medical school. In 1957, under the joint administration of the Graduate Executive committee, which consisted of Wilfred W. Westerfeld, PhD (chair), Chester L. Yntema, PhD, Justus F. Mueller, PhD, Alfred Farah, PhD, Gordon K. Moe, MD, PhD and administrator Joseph K. Hill, the graduate program in Medical Sciences became the School of Graduate Studies. In June 1958 it awarded its first MS and in June 1959 its first PhD – to Arthur A. Iodice, in biochemistry. Dr. Westerfeld became dean in 1961, and in 1973 it was renamed the College of Graduate Studies. The College of Health Professions traces its roots to 1956 when the university offered a certificate program in cytotechnology. The School of Allied Health Professions opened in 1965, offering degree programs in medical technology, radiation technology and radiation therapy technology. Programs in inhalation therapy, medical technology, physical therapy and respiratory therapy were added in the late 1960s and early 1970s. In 1971, John Bernard Henry, MD, became the first dean of the College of Health Related Professions. The word “related” was dropped from the name of the college in 1996. In 2004, the Doctor of Physical Therapy curriculum was added to provide advanced clinical reasoning and differential diagnosis. The Department of Physician Assistant Studies was established in 2009 in response to the health care needs of Central New York. In 2018, the Behavioral Analysis Studies program was added to provide therapeutic services for individuals with autism and related disorders. In 1959, Upstate Medical University initiated an Associate Degree Program in Nursing to meet shortages in this field. Responding to the need for primary care nurses, a Nurse Practitioner Certificate Program was implemented in 1974 and 10 years later, a combined Bachelor of Science and Master of Science Program (BS/MS) was introduced. In 1986, the College of Nursing was established in response to rising enrollment. Growth continued in the late 1980s and early 1990s with the introduction of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program and Master of Science Program that prepared advanced practice nurses for the role of clinical nurse specialist or nurse practitioner. In response to the needs of patients with mental health disorders, the Family Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (FPMHNP) program was established in 2009. In 2013, the College was proud to usher in an online Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program, which was the first in the area. The vision of Upstate Medical University is to be the leading regional academic medical center in the nation. In achieving this vision, SUNY Upstate is a highly regarded resource for the education of health professionals, especially in shortage areas; a global resource for research that improves understanding of health and disease; a catalyst in the delivery of patient-centered health care that addresses our region’s most pressing concerns; and a place to work that recognizes excellence.

The Academic Costume

he tradition of the academic costume or “regalia” can be traced to the 12th century when gowns and hoods served a distinct purpose for scholars working in unheated buildings. Over the years, gowns and hoods have become indicative of scholarly activities and credentials. The widespread use of the costume grew so rapidly during the 19th century, that it was often difficult to discern which costumes represented the various degrees. In 1894, an intercollegiate system was established to determine the style, design and colors of the gowns and hoods. Today, the shape and size of the hood, and the colors of its lining and border, represent the highest degree held by the wearer, the subject studied, and the school by which the degree was conferred. The hood’s velvet border represents the graduate’s field of study: medicine – green; science – yellow; education – light blue; social work – citron; library science – lemon; dentistry – lilac; nursing – apricot; philosophy – dark blue; physical therapy – teal; and public health – salmon. The official colors of the State University of New York Upstate Medical University are blue and gold. The hood’s interior is treated as an inverted shield, lined with dark blue, and bearing a gold chevron. Upstate Medical University tradition requires green mortarboard tassels for MD recipients and blue for PhD recipients. In accordance with national custom, bachelor’s and master’s degree recipients, faculty members, and guests wear black tassels, while doctoral faculty, trustees, and guests wear gold.
