English Language Skills Development Academic Writing Workshops: • General academic writing workshops offered at Undergraduate, Masters or Doctoral level in terms 1, 2 and 3* • Academic vocabulary, reading strategies, incorporating reading into writing, processes for writing and editing assignments, academic style, understanding feedback. • Dissertation Writing Support for Masters students in Term 3, with a focus on difficulties in writing longer texts, reflective practice and practical tasks. Language Development: • Extend range and accuracy of your language use, focusing at sentence level and emphasising complex sentences. Key areas of grammar and lexis will be covered, with opportunities to focus on your specific needs. • Terms 1 & 2, for all students.
One-to-One Writing tutorials: • Tutors can provide help with essays, dissertations and other assignments (some College specific tutorials are available). Tutorials run all year round. Guided Independent Learning (GIL): • Online bank of resources allowing students to learn and develop independently. The site has an embedded Yammer community, offering tips and an opportunity to ask questions.

Presentation Skills: • Enhance your communication skills in the context of giving an academic presentation. Subject Specific Academic English (workshops designed for your discipline) Faculty of the Environment, Science and Economy Academic English for Postgraduate Engineers: Workshops providing practical techniques to extend and expand appropriate academic spoken and written usage for Engineering MScs (Term 1), with dissertation support in terms 2 and 3. Academic Writing for Science: Workshops focusing on specific skills in writing for Science, suitable for students across the Sciences at all levels of academic study. (Terms 1 & 2) Exeter Business School: A range of workshops and one-to-one support is available – see details in below table Academic Writing in English workshops (Terms 1, 2 & 3). Open to both undergraduate and postgraduate students. Oral Communication Skills for Business school students (Term 1 & 2). Including opportunities to practise speaking, build confidence and improve your oral fluency. Presentation Skills for Business School students (Term 1). Covering useful language, strategies for effective delivery, and help with pronunciation, with opportunities to practise and receive feedback. One-to-one support (Terms 1 & 2). Bookable individual sessions to work on students’ own writing or language questions. Dissertation writing workshops for postgraduate students (Term 3). Business School PhD workshops (Terms 1 & 2). Designed for students beginning their doctoral studies.

Build confidence, meet other students to help you to integrate into the cultural and social life of the University (Terms 1 & 2). Current Issues: Discussion forum of current affairs based on news broadcasts and other sources (Terms 1, 2 & 3). Pronunciation Workshops: Increase awareness of features of spoken English, especially the importance of stress and intonation in communicating in English (Terms 1, 2 & 3). Preparation for Work: • Employability support workshops (Terms 1 & 2). • CV writing, cover letters, personal statements, and preparing for job interviews for those wishing to work in an English-speaking context (Term 3).
