The MSc in Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management is not your typical postgraduate Programme will be exposed to a wide variety of innovative learning experiences, such as hackathons and design sprints, in conjunction with more traditional approaches such as lectures, group-work and tutorials.

You will ‘learn by doing’ with a cohort of like-minded students, looking to disrupt traditional ways of working and affect change. Engagement with guest entrepreneurs and specialists will further enhance the development of your entrepreneurial knowledge, skills, and confidence.

Every effort is made to offer a high standard of diverse learning experiences making each subject accessible. This will range from pre- online learning to oneto-one Modulescoaching.areassessed through a mixture of group work, course work, individual project work, and an examination: the weighting of each of these components will vary according to the academic requirements of the module. This Programme offers a creative, energized and pragmatic approach that delivers a stimulating education in entrepreneurship and innovation management where students learn like entrepreneurs. Its goal is to enable students to go out into a world that is full of opportunities with an advanced set of entrepreneurial skills, knowledge, and confidence to create new ventures; to create something special.

William Casely is a Senior Lecturer in Entrepreneurship and Innovation. Prior to joining the university, William gained 28 years’ experience working in the retail industry, 16 of them in Senior Management roles.

THE TEAM

Trained at Harrods, he has worked with a mix of retail names across a mix of retail sectors. Career progression with Debenhams culminated in him managing their Oxford Street store, before he moved across London to Kingston as General Manager of Bentalls. As Chairman of Kingston Town Management Ltd, he developed one of the earliest Town Centre management organisations in the country. He returned to Knightsbridge appointed as the first General Manger of Harvey Nichols and, during this tenure, became a Group Director at the Oxford Retail Summer School, Keble College. Returning to his roots in the South West, William became Managing Director of the Otter Retail Group. William’s research interest lies within the fields of Entrepreneurship and Innovation, with particular focus on ‘Intelligent Failure’ within corporate entrepreneurship.

Whilst we understand that you need to turn up with motivation and a burning desire to get started, we also appreciate that entrepreneurship relies on a set of skills that can be continually improved. This module provides a theoretical framework that allows you to reflect on your strengths and weaknesses. Once we have identified what you need to work on we will support you accordingly, enabling you to become an effective entrepreneur. EntrepreneurshipBLOCKS:andInnovation

This module underpins the Programme and consists of both a strong theoretical and applied approach. In other words, in a pragmatic way, this module provides you with the tools, skills, and the mental framework to successfully create and grow a new venture. It addresses the fundamental pillars of entrepreneurship to empower your wider understanding, and will give you a robust understanding of entrepreneurs, the entrepreneurial process, and creating successful new ventures. Centring on theory and practice this module will enable you to create your own startup venture or a new venture within an existing business.

With the growing understanding that entrepreneurship is a ‘team sport’ you will form a team with other like-minded entrepreneurs to complete a series of sprints and projects, all the while building your own knowledge and honing your understanding of yourself within the entrepreneurial process. In developing your new venture, this module will take you from idea to launch. It is designed to move you through the phases of startup from validation, MVP (minimum viable product), to test and iterate towards market fit.

This module is set up as an incubator and operates in the third term. It is delivered through an intensive applied approach within a dedicated space – The Skydeck in the Innovation Centre. This module centres on the pragmatic application of your entrepreneurial knowledge and skills through a live project that entails the ‘virtual’ creation of a venture project and as such it gives you the opportunity to practice entrepreneurship. The fluid nature of this module allows academic learning followed by application of new venture processes.

This module provides a fundamental underpinning for the design of sustainable business strategies by focusing on how to achieve the efficient and effective management of resources and operations. The module will provide you with the means to analyse operational activities and design solutions to overcome wasteful operational processes and issues. It will also equip the participant with the skills to manage projects to achieve these goals.

This course will introduce you to the key concepts of entrepreneurial finance and build confidence in how to navigate the funding, accounting, and finance space successfully. Businesses across the world have a multitude of options in how to raise finance to start and create further growth.

You will learn how to identify and manage the best options of funding from financial bootstrapping, banks, crowdfunding, angel investment, to venture capital. By having a good working knowledge of how to manage money and make it work for you, it will give you the confidence to build, launch, and make your business financially sustainable.

3. Goals, Success and Happiness

In an ever-changing world, education is increasingly not only about gaining excellent academic skills and absorbing a wealth of knowledge but also about investing in your own personal development.Across this whole programme, we encourage all students to engage with all the personal development opportunities available but also to view the whole programme as an exercise in personal development. Entrepreneurship is a discipline which is very much linked to individual mindset and wellbeing and there are six areas of focus that we would like you to thread through every aspect of your engagement with the programme.

Understanding who we are and why we do what we do is not only fascinating, but also, the more we know, the more empowered we are to become the person we want to be.Try to view all theory and activities through the lens of,“What does this mean to me and how can I use this to develop who I am and who I aspire to be?”

The human species is capable of incredibly positive action but also, we have some ingrained weaknesses which can frustrate our best ambitions. There can be a strong pressure to present an almost faultless front to peers and colleagues, however it has shown that being aware of our own strengths AND weaknesses is essential to sustainable success. So, let this Programme be an opportunity to honestly explore your strengths and weaknesses and learn to build an even more balanced and successful you.

Creativity is often seen as something you either excel in or not, but in reality, each of us have to use creative thinking every time we solve issues and problems. Creativity is often undervalued in traditional education, but in this Programme we value creative thinking very highly. Your wellbeing is the single most influential factor in achieving your goals and we shouldn’t wait until we are struggling to prioritise our wellbeing. Use every resource available and make a habit of asking for help, support and guidance every day.

One of the key reasons that we struggle to be proactive in our lives, is that daily life gets on top of us and we just don’t have the time or energy to take on even more.
