Our History

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore was originally established as the Delaware Conference Academy in 1886. Later, the Academy was supervised by Morgan State College under the name Princess Anne Academy or the Industrial Branch of Morgan State College.

Subsequently, the Maryland Agricultural College, wishing to provide instruction for Negro youth under the provisions of the Second Morrill Act of 1890 and later acts of Congress, contracted with the trustees of Morgan College, the owners of the Academy, to provide the requisite instruction for Negro youth. By the Act of the Legislature of Maryland, one-fifth of the Morrill Fund and a small state appropriation were granted to the Academy.

For the first twenty-five years, it was difficult, indeed impossible, to secure enough students beyond the high school grade to warrant advanced classes. With the improvement in public education and the establishment of high schools for Negroes, more educated students were recruited. In September 1925, the Junior College Department was established.

The State of Maryland, in operating its 1862 land-grant program at the Maryland Agricultural College at College Park, which did not admit African-Americans, sought to provide a land-grant program for African‐Americans and assumed control of the Princess Anne Academy, renaming it the Eastern Branch of the Maryland Agricultural College. Control shifted from Morgan State College to Maryland Agricultural College over a period of years between 1919 and 1936. In January 1936, the College passed into complete control and ownership of the State, and the University of Maryland was designated as the administrative agency.

.
8

Our History....

In 1936 definite plans were laid for raising the status to a four-year college and the beginning of increased offerings at Princess Anne College. Four-year courses were established in Agriculture and Agricultural Education, Home Economics and Home Economics Education, and Mechanic Arts and Mechanic Arts Education; a two-year junior college course in Arts and Sciences was also established.

In 1948, the institution became officially Maryland State College, a division of the University of Maryland. However, resources and funding from the state remained limited, and the school did not grow much in size. In 1970, the University System of Maryland was organized, and on July 1, 1970, Maryland State College became the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.

Since 1970, UMES has grown to incorporate a wider vision of its mission. Recognized as one of the thirteen University System of Maryland (USM) campuses, it is fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. UMES offers major programs leading to the B.A. and B.S. degrees in 37 disciplines in the arts and sciences, professional studies, and agricultural sciences. Total enrollment has more than tripled since 1970, growing to about 4,200. Various graduate degrees in science, health professions, education, and business have been developed, and about 10% of students are in master's or doctoral degree programs.

Many of the programs offered at UMES are unique and are designed to fulfill the current and future employment needs of the industries and people in the region. In meeting this need, the University has increased its course offerings during evening and weekend hours and developed online courses, allowing more people to enhance themselves socially and economically through post-secondary education. An aggressive building program, both new construction and renovation of existing structures, has accompanied this expansion in size and the number of programs to produce the current attractive campus. Library holdings, computer and laboratory facilities, and student services have also expanded to offer students the tools needed for modern education. The recent expansion of programs is not yet complete, and the future of the University provides many opportunities for students.

The Alma Mater

To Thee, dear Alma Mater

We raise our grateful song, And through Thy noble teachings, Thoust made Thy children strong

And thousands still shall praise thee

All earth shall hear their swell

And bind our hearts yet closer To Thee we love so well

Refrain:

Maryland, Maryland

Home of Maroon and Gray

Maryland, Maryland

Thee, we will love always

All Hail to Thee fair Maryland

All glory be to Thee

Grow Thou in strength in honor

Through all eternity

We love Thy spacious campus

We love Thy towering walls

And noble are Thy teachings

We've learned within Thy halls

Stand thou forever glorious

Full rob'd in living green

Shine thou in endless splendor

Beneath the trees serene

Plates Out:

Parking will be “Plates Out.” When parking on campus, drivers must park with their license plate facing the driving lane so that it can be properly scanned What that means to the campus: if you have a vehicle with one license plate, the back of the vehicle will need to face the parking lane – no backing in or pulling through. This will allow for greater efficiency in enforcement and avoid a no- plates out citation and fine.
