COVER

YOU ARE INCLUDED GREATER PALM SPRINGS PRIDE 2021 BY THE STANDARD MAGAZINE STAFF community, to remember those we have lost, affirm our commitment in the fight for equality, and look toward the future and what it holds for LGBTQ people worldwide. Our visibility remains our greatest tool to push back against those who oppress us. Greater Palm Springs Pride creates moments of visibility for the LGBTQ community. Pride is for everyone. That is why this year’s theme “You Are Included” means so much. So, whether you’re a member of the LGBTQ community, a supportive ally, or someone who’s questioning where you fit into the spectrum, you are part of our diverse and vibrant community, and your place is here with us. We stand with Pride around the world; we give a voice to the power of selfexpression, inclusiveness, and love. COMMUNITY GRAND MARSHAL Community Grand Marshals are recognized for having a positive impact in the region through the many years of support they have provided to community organizations and fundraising efforts large and small. This year, we are recognizing and celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Streetbar, the first Gay Bar in Palm Springs. When it opened in August 1991, Streetbar was the first Gay bar in Palm Springs and is now the longest running LGBTQ bar in the Coachella Valley. When Dick Haskamp and Hank Morgan, founders of Streetbar, opened on Arenas Road they paved the way for what is now the LGBTQ community business district. Civic minded Dick made Streetbar a community fundraising institution as well as the local gay watering hole. After the stress, uncertainty, and isolation of the pandemic, there is finally a bit of light at the end of the tunnel and a chance to finally come together. Greater Palm Springs Pride is back; large, in charge and live. The 35th Palm Springs Pride will once again gather in Palm Springs to educate, inspire, and commemorate our diverse community. Together, we honor the past and empower each other to live our authentic, truest selves. It is in the spirit of solidarity that we celebrate what it means to be a member of this beautiful

6 THESTANDARDPS.COM

Streetbar continues its longstanding tradition of bringing community together with events. In the thirty years since its opening, the staff and customers of Streetbar have raised funds for local charities, including Aids Assistance Program (AAP), LGBTQ Center of the Desert (The Center), and Palm Springs Animal Shelter. The organizations were beneficiaries of Streetbar’s two major fundraising events, the Holiday Wreath Auction and the ArtWall Project.

The wreath auction, now hosted by 849 Restaurant, sold wreaths created and donated by customers, local businesses and Streetbar staff. The ArtWall Project was the brainchild of several of Streetbar’s artistic employees as a way to show and sell their own creative works. Other local artists are also invited to participate in the monthly show donating a percentage of sales to benefit AAP and other charities. In 2006, AAP presented the Streetbar ArtWall Project committee with the annual Gloria Greene Inspiration Award, named after the organization’s founder and community activist Gloria Greene. Dick dedicated his life, time and resources to the Palm Springs LGBTQ community, serving on the boards of the original Desert Gay Rodeo Association, Desert Business Association, Palm Springs Desert Gay Tourism Guild, Aids Assistance Program, and The Center. He was also an entertainer with the community fundraising powerhouse drag troupe, Les Dames de Soleil, and he holds the prestigious position as the first Grand Marshal of the Palm Springs Pride Parade. The City of Palm Springs honored Dick for his humanitarian and philanthropic contributions to Palm Springs, on February 8, 2014, with the 362 Golden Palm Star located at 200 S. Palm Canyon Drive, on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars. Posthumously he received the Legacy Award from The Center for his philanthropy and community activism. Dick always said it was the best staff, a good drink and a friendly atmosphere that garnered Streetbar the loyal customers and its great success. Even after a difficult and treacherous past year, what remains unmistakably clear - it is the remarkable people that stand behind that bar everyday providing a friendly smile and excellent service, as well as the longtime behind-the-scenes support staff that clean, maintain the bar and keep things moving smoothly that have made it possible for Streetbar to prevail and persevere for 30 years. Fifteen of the twenty employees have been with Streetbar from 10 to 21 years.

Thank you Streetbar for embracing the local community and international visitors alike, welcoming all and promoting a safe, positive environment to celebrate not only who we are but what we can achieve together. Dick Haskamp passed away on March 4th, 2018, leaving his legacy and beloved Streetbar to his longtime general manager David Farnsworth and accountant Conrad Riley. Sadly, Conrad Riley passed in May of 2020, leaving his business shares to his husband, Steven Smith.

Betty has cooked and served her award-winning gumbo for thousands at the original L-fund gala fundraiser known as the Gumbo Gala. Leather culture legend Race Bannon is the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award. Race has elevated awareness of the leather community’s contributions toward LGBTQ liberation for nearly 50 years. As a writer and activist, he has ensured the broader progressive community discourse includes leather, kink, and BDSM. An accomplished artist, a feminist, and a groundbreaker, Nancy Worthington receives a Lifetime Achievement Award. For forty-five years, Nancy’s art has been a social commentary of life. She has covered many different topics, including police brutality, the environment, feminism, human rights, and scathing politics. Her unique visual language has brought her international attention, and her work is in permanent collections around the world. The 2021 Friend of Pride is Keisha D, a champion for the LGBTQ community, humanitarian, singer-activist, and advocate for performing arts in education. For decades Keisha has given her time to perform at charity events and community galas, and fundraising events, all in the name of love and passion for helping others. When not on stage, Keisha mentors high school students and directly supports under-served minority students to pursue an education in music and the arts. Motivated by gay trailblazers to stand up and not be afraid to tell his own story, Jim Hollenbeck is the Spirit of Pride Award recipient. Jim’s first Pride experience in San Francisco, when he was 22 years old, opened the door to four decades of providing his

public relations and communications services to many LGBTQ groups and nonprofit organizations. Jim has attended and supported events and fundraisers across the country that advance equality and celebrate the strength of the LGBTQ community. The Spirit of Stonewall Community Service Award recipient is a faithful socially-minded business owner, Cliff Young. Driven by compassion and kindness, Cliff supports urban revitalization projects, mentoring, and work training programs for at-risk youth. Additionally, through his coffee company, he established the Warming Souls program, where he offers laundry services to local homeless and provides them with new socks and personal hygiene kits. Since 2017, in Desert Hot Springs, Cliff has done an average of fifteen weekly loads of laundry for people experiencing homelessness. “Learning of the honorees and of the many ways they give back is inspiring. They each have lived their life helping others, and our community is better because of their leadership,” said Ron deHarte, president of Palm Springs Pride. “As in years past, the honorees are not people who seek attention or accolades for what they do. They quietly serve, and we are grateful for the profound impact they have had and continue to have in our community.”

DOCUMENTING PALM SPRINGS LGBTQ+ HISTORY UNDERWAY BY LOCAL ORGANIZATION BY RON deHARTE Today the greater Palm Springs area is one of the best-known LGBTQ+ locations in the world. Have you ever wondered how that happened or why this place? Were people just drawn here for its beauty, weather, isolation, and its tendency to live and let live, or were there other reasons? What were the first businesses and organizations that reached out to welcome the lesbians and gays, allowing this area to evolve to become the mecca that it is today for the LGBTQ+ community? So many questions and so few answers

8 THESTANDARDPS.COM

existed, at least in any one place from any one source. And so, this journey began to answer those questions and more, to uncover the history of the LGBTQ+ community of the greater Palm Springs area so that it could be memorialized and shared. Small hotels, bars, restaurants, and organizations that attracted gays and lesbians gradually began to spring up in unincorporated Cathedral City and Rancho Mirage in the 1960s and 1970s. Then,

RON deHARTE PHOTO BY STEVE PARRIS

by the 1980s as more LGBT people became open, Palm Springs itself became a mecca for LGBTQ+ tourists and local residents alike. Feeling that much of the history of when and how this came about was unknown or lost; a small group of individuals formed The LGBTQ+ History & Archives of the Desert in 2019. “When it became obvious that the LGBTQ+ history of the Palm Springs area was not very well documented and even being lost,” says David Gray, Co-Founder, “I knew something needed to be done to preserve our local LGBTQ+ history for future generations.” Initial efforts were underway to get this organization on its feet when the COVID-19 pandemic put a halt to all plans and progress. After a year-long hiatus, the committee regrouped, and all were willing to jump back in as all were still very committed to the mission and vision of this project. Working with the Palm Springs Public Library and the Palm Springs Historical Society, the mission of the organization is ‘to collect, preserve and make accessible the LGBTQ+ History of the Greater Palm Springs Area

within the Coachella Valley’. Currently, we are focusing on documenting and preserving that history, and sharing it with LGBTQ+ individuals, organizations, allies, and the public. “Author Michael Crichton once said ‘If you don’t know history, then you don’t know anything. You are a leaf that doesn’t know it is part of a tree.’ and I think that is true for this community and why this project is so important.” says Julie Warren, Co-Founder, and the Library & Public Services Manager of the Palm Springs Public Library. Still in its infancy, The LGBTQ+ History & Archives of the Desert is looking for documents and memorabilia from bars, inns, restaurants, publications, and LGBT organizations. Should you have any LGBTQ+ treasures in your garage, attic or storage area and would like to donate or loan them, please contact the organization at lgbtqpshistory@gmail. com. You can also follow them on Facebook @lgbtqpshistory. An Inaugural Exhibition will be unveiled and on display during Pride Weekend, November 4 to 7, 2021, at the Wellwood Murray Memorial Library, 100 S. Palm Canyon Dr., Palm Springs.

Protestor holding a sign reading: Trans Rights Are Human Rights Scotland Tells Teachers to Respect the Gender Identities of Trans Kids. New guidance also states that trans students should be allowed to use the bathroom that corresponds with their gender.

SCOTLAND IS NOW THE FIRST COUNTRY TO REQUIRE LGBTQ+ HISTORY IN SCHOOLS Scotland has officially become the first country in the world to implement a required LGBTQ+ curriculum in schools after a new teacher toolkit launched this week. Educators now have access to a website offering an e-learning course on teaching topics related to the LGBTQ+ community, as well as a host of inclusive lesson plans and educational support materials, according to Scottish news outlet The Scotsman. While LGBTQ+ subjects will be taught explicitly, the new curriculum also seeks to integrate inclusion into everyday learning. Lessons offered on the website range from exercises on discrimination to a math problem involving a young girl purchasing Father’s Day cards for her two dads. While the new curricula were created, in part, for students to receive a more well-rounded education, the Scottish government also hopes the lessons will help reduce bullying. LGBTQ+ youth in the U.K. are twice as likely to have been bullied in the past year than their straight, cisgender classmates, according to a June study released by the youth advocacy group Just Like Us. Scotland’s history-making curriculum is in large part due to the efforts of Time for Inclusive Education (TIE), an LGBTQ+ advocacy group that successfully lobbied the Scottish Parliament to implement nationwide inclusive learning. In 2017, the country’s government created the “LGBTI Inclusive Education Working Group,” which consisted of TIE and several other pro-LGBTQ+ groups, to investigate deepening inclusion in schools. A year later, the government accepted all 33 of its recommendations. “Everything we’re trying to do here is all very, very Christian,” TIE Co-founder Liam Stevenson told them. in 2019. “It’s about looking after one another, it’s about respecting one another, and it’s about caring for and loving one another and producing healthy young people.”

Scotland’s streamlined national education system is partially responsible for the success of this effort. In the United States education is hyper-local and individual school districts have the power to decide what their students learn, but decisions on Scottish public-school curricula are largely made at the federal level. Other countries seem to be following Scotland’s example: In 2018, Wales announced that it would implement an LGBTQ+ sex education curriculum by 2022. Scotland has also taken other steps to better support LGBTQ+ students in recent months. In August, the Scottish government provided guidance encouraging schools to adopt gender-neutral dress codes and allow trans students to use chosen names, pronouns, and bathrooms. The recommendations were not compulsory. In the U.S., only seven states have adopted curricular standards that affirm LGBTQ+ people, according to the anti-bullying advocacy group GLSEN. Those states are California, New Jersey, Nevada, Illinois, Oregon, Connecticut, and Colorado. Conversely, at least four states — Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi — still have so-called “no promo homo” laws on the books that actively bar educators from depicting LGBTQ+ issues in a positive light. This June, the Biden administration issued guidance informing states that the federal government considers discrimination against LGBTQ+ students to be a Title IX violation. The directive was inspired by the Supreme Court’s 2020 ruling in Bostock v. Clayton County, which banned anti-LGBTQ+ workplace discrimination nationwide.

GERMANY JUST ELECTED TWO TRANS WOMEN TO ITS PARLIAMENT FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER Two candidates just earned spots in history as Germany’s first out trans women lawmakers after winning seats in its parliamentary elections on Sunday. The Greens, a center-left political party focused on environmental advocacy, finished third in the elections for Germany’s Bundestag, winning 14.8% of the vote. That total represents the

FEATURE to self-identify their gender, Slawik plans to push for the adoption of a nationwide “action plan against homophobia and trans-hostility,” according to her campaign website. Her 10-point platform also includes a “strategy against racism” in Germany and a “real federal anti-discrimination law.” The lack of comprehensive federal protections in areas like public accommodations is critical as hate crimes against LGBTQ+ Germans continue to rise. In 2020, violence against queer and transgender people ballooned by a massive 36%, and LGBTQ+ advocates argue that figure is still likely an undercount because of a lack of reporting to law enforcement.

42-year-old party’s best-ever finish in the German federal races and will also result in a pair of other milestones: parliamentary seats for 44-year-old Tessa Ganserer and 27-year-old Nyke Slawik.

Still, Germany has made some progress for LGBTQ+ rights this year. Earlier this month, Germany’s Office of Justice announced that it was paying reparations to LGBTQ+ people who were persecuted under Nazi-era sodomy laws. Germany’s parliament also banned some intersex surgeries in April, although advocates have criticized the new law for limiting its scope to children who have an official diagnosis of a “disorder of sex development.”

“It is a historic victory for the Greens, but also for the transemancipatory movement and for the entire queer community,” Ganserer, who has served in the parliament of the German state of Bavaria since 2013, told Reuters. Slawik added in an Instagram post that the results of the election were “madness.” A research assistant for lawmakers in North Rhine-Westphalia’s parliament, Slawik ran for local office in the northwestern German state four years ago before running for European Parliament in 2019. She came short both times. While Ganserer and Slawik will be the first trans parliamentary lawmakers to be out at the time of their elections, they are not the first transgender people to be seated in the Bundestag. Christian Schenk was closeted during the 12 years he spent in Germany’s parliament — first as a member of Independent Women’s Association Party and then the Party of Democratic Socialism — and came out in 2006 after leaving the legislature. The new lawmakers’ priorities include improving the quality of life for LGBTQ+ Germans. Ganserer, in particular, hopes to streamline the process of applying for a gender marker correction. Trans people who wish to amend their legal gender must file a petition with a local court, which commissions two experts to certify that the applicant has not identified with their assigned gender for at least three years, according to the Rainbow Portal, a government resource for LGBTQ+ Germans. In addition to supporting a law that would allow trans people

THE MISTRESS OF THE DARK HAS STEPPED INTO THE LIGHT. Actress Cassandra Peterson, best known for embodying Elvira, the hyper-femme queen of late-night horror, revealed in a memoir released this week that she has been in a relationship with a woman for nearly 20 years. “At this point in my life, I’ve got to be truthful about who I am,” Peterson writes in Yours Cruelly, Elvira: Memories of the Mistress of the Dark, as The Advocate reported. Although the couple was out to family and friends, the bookmarks Peterson’s first public acknowledgement of her relationship. “I’m

happy and relieved to finally allow our secret to see the light of day,” Peterson writes in the book. As Peterson tells it, she first met Teresa “T” Wierson at a Hollywood gym, where she “couldn’t help noticing one particular trainer — tan, tattooed, and muscular” who “gave off such intense energy” that “the waters parted, and people stopped in their tracks to stare” when Wierson stalked across the enormous gym floor. The two became close friends. Peterson describes the rainy night Weirson showed up at her door, in need of support and a place to stay following a breakup and a stint in rehab. Peterson herself was recently separated from musician Mark Pierson at the time. The two women moved in together, offering each other mutual support. The attraction that developed took Peterson by surprise; she writes. “I was stunned that I’d been friends with her for so many years and never noticed our chemistry,” Peterson recalls. “I soon discovered that we connected sexually in a way I’d never experienced.” Peterson admits she hesitated to reveal the relationship for many years for fear of alienating or disappointing fans of Elvira. The character she created in the early 1980s became instantly recognizable for her low-cut black dress and Dolly Parton-esque cleavage. Beginning at live shows in Los Angeles, and eventually culminating in the 1988 horror-comedy feature film Elvira: Mistress of the Dark, Elvira cheekily embodied the male fantasy of a hypersexual, high-femme mistress of horror, often pointing out and relishing in the attention she received from men.

To the contrary, queer fans online have already been quick to celebrate the news, giddily claiming the camp icon as one of their own. Coming out this close to Halloween? BOOK REVIEW

ALWAYS OVERBOOKED BY TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER The applause is all for you this time. It’s deafening, really – perhaps because there’s a standing ovation beneath it. All the work you did, the emoting, the emotions, you know how much your fans appreciate it. So, take a bow. Drink in the love. As in the new novel, “The Charm Offensive” by Alison Cochrun, that’s one thing that’s sometimes missing in life. Dev Deshpande was good at his job. He knew it, his colleagues knew it, it was fact. He might personally be terrible at love – case in point: he was still smarting from a three-months-ago break-up with his boyfriend, Ryan – but Dev was a pro at his job as producer for the reality TV show, Ever After. In fact, he’d been in charge of making dreams happen for six years’ worth of beautiful Ever After contestants; it helped that he believed in fairy tales. Maybe one day, he’d find his own Prince Charming. Just not this season. This season, his lead director made him handle the “prince” instead of the usual “princesses,” and that was a challenge. Charles Winshaw was twenty-eight, devastatingly handsome, extremely wealthy, and a nervous, introverted nerd who rarely dated. Geeky, awkward, and prone to panic attacks, he sincerely had no clue how to be romantic. Truth was, he was only there because his best friend and agent put him on Ever After to counter a reputation for being weird. Still, Charlie was weird, and it was up to Dev to make him work for the show. Shoring up Charlie’s confidence didn’t work, and neither did a pep talk. He couldn’t seem to just perform a role without freaking out and it was becoming obvious. By the time Dev’s assistant suggested having a few practice dates, Dev was willing to try anything. He took Charlie to dinner. He spent time doing jigsaw puzzles with him, and he got Charlie to relax a little. If sparks flew, well, it was one-sided: Charlie was completely straight. Wasn’t he? You know what’s going to happen in the end, don’t you? Of course, you do. You’ll know it by Page Thirty, step-by-step, with virtually no surprises, which leaves a long way to the final sentence of “The Charm Offensive.” Now, it’s true that this novel is cute. It has its lightly humorous moments and author Alison Cochrun gives it a good cast, from contestant to show creator. It doesn’t lack details; in fact, reality dating show-watchers will feel right at home here. It even has the

ubiquitous panoply of exotic locales for the “challenges” that the contestants must do. At issue is the length of this book. There’s too much of it, too many shirts that creep up, too many mentions of vomit, too much needless drama, too many will-he-won’t-he, when we know full well he will. This extra doesn’t ratchet up the tension, it makes things slow. And so: cute story, familiar scenes, good characters in “The Charm Offensive.” But if taut is what you want in a rom-com, leave this book and bow out. “The Charm Offensive: A Novel” by Alison Cochrun c.2021, Atria $17.00 / $23.00 Canada. 368 pages

INDESIGN

RECOGNIZING THE CUES OF FINE LIVING BY DANN FOLEY

BATHROOM DESIGN BY FOLEY & STINNETTE

There was a time when residential design and hospitality design were two separate animals. We designed one or the other and never the twain shall meet. Like everything else it seems, that old adage has gone out the window. Today, restaurants and hotels take their cues from residential design, and our homes are influenced by the incredible design work and details in establishments around the globe. It is fair to say that our busy, run-around lives have also exposed us to many new thoughts on design and it is only natural that one would begin to influence the other. In our firm, we do both residential and hospitality design and so, our projects cannot help but overlap. Design and detail are of paramount importance. You see, the thing about designing restaurants and designing homes is that in both instances the occupants want to be comfortable, feel inspired, and they want to be proud of their space/home. Here in the desert, we have been fortunate to have clients from both perspectives and I want to share with you just how similar the

design approach is for each and how they influence, enliven and inspire each other. The idea of the great room and the idea of the open kitchen restaurant run parallel to each other. One made the other possible, made it chic. And the plethora of both design and cooking programs fueled the fire for great design. When I go out to eat, I want the atmosphere to be as soul nourishing as the entrée. I want the experience to be memorable. I teach our clients to notice everything. I urge them to take the time and see everything around them. Inspiration can be found in anything from a paint color, to a light fixture, to a bar coaster. There is no detail so small that it should miss your consideration. The trick is then to apply those things you see to your own home. How do you translate inspiration from hospitality space into residential space? Well, you know I have some thoughts on the subject and I am here to share them with you. The answer is actually quite simple; It’s really all in the details!

• Remember that color is your friend. I cannot say enough how color is one of the last best and easiest ways to infuse your home personality. I find that restaurants we design are places that want great color. It helps to visually tell their story. • If you want a truly unique space, consider color on other pieces as well. Not every sofa should be beige or gray, and not every kitchen or bathroom needs to be all white. • Details, details, details. Every decision is important. And the small things are what helps to make your home memorable. Never allow yourself to say, “This doesn’t matter.” • The big-ticket rooms should make a statement. With all of the open kitchen restaurants out there and all of the great room living situations in homes today, we can learn from each other what is not only functional, but beautiful as well. • Bathrooms have unfortunately become as bland as kitchens as these days. You don’t have to use the entire box of crayons to create your own personalized bathroom but, you can experiment with your powder room. I find them to be a space that is easy to go wild. It is also the one room that everyone who visits your home will

see. Have fun, be dramatic. Bathrooms are the new Instagram-able moment. Be sure to make it shine and sparkle. • Tile today is simply incredible. The shapes, sizes, colors and textures are better than ever before. The offerings are endless! Use this to advantage. I find inspirations in the most beautiful restaurants and hotels. Restrooms have become almost as important as the public space in hospitality design. These spaces offer you the opportunity to be a part of the design. Take it all in and then take that excitement home with you. What this all comes down to is making the choice to move forward. I want to help you make your home a place of respite and delight; to love your home and be proud to share it with family and friends. I want you to remember to open your eyes, be inspired and apply those things that excite you in your everyday life. As always, Live Well! BILLY EICHNER’S HISTORIC GAY ROM COM TO FEATURE ALL LGBTQ+ MAIN CAST

Several additional cast members have been announced for out actor Billy Eichner’s historic gay romantic comedy Bros with Universal. And they are all LGBTQ+. The film will be the first major studio comedy centering around two gay men, according to Universal Pictures. Eichner, 42, is set to make history as the first out man to co-write and star such a film. He’ll also executive produce it, while director Nicholas Stolle will be cowriting it with him. Judd Apatow will serve as a producer. The project will also make history as all of the principal roles will be filled by out LGBTQ+ talent. Earlier this year Luke Macfarlane was confirmed to be playing Eichner’s love interest. Eichner wrote on Twitter, “This is the best thing EVER! I could not possibly be more excited to tell you about the ENTIRE main cast for my rom com BROS will be ALL openly LGBTQ+ actors!!! Yes, even in all the straight roles! This is a first for a major studio film. LET’S MAKE HISTORY!!!” The additional cast includes Ts Madison (Zola), gender

nonconforming entertainer Miss Lawrence (Star, The United States vs. Billie Holiday); RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Symone; Guillermo Diaz (Scandal, Weeds, and Half Baked); and Guy Branum of Talk Show the Game Show. “I could not be more proud or excited about the historic nature of the all openly LGBTQ+ cast of Bros. After queer actors have spent decades watching straight actors capitalize both artistically and professionally by playing LGBTQ+ characters, it is a long overdue dream come true to be able to assemble this remarkable, hilarious cast,” Eichner told The Hollywood Reporter. “And while Bros may be the first of its kind in several ways, my real hope is that it is only the first of many opportunities for openly LGBTQ+ ensembles to shine and show the world all we are capable of as actors, beyond just being the wacky sidekick, token queer, or a straight movie star’s ‘gay best friend.’” “And beyond all of that, this cast is f****** hysterical and you’re going to love them,” he added. Bros is scheduled to be released on August 12, 2022. From The Advocate

FITNESS

HAPPY PRIDE, EVERYONE! BY JILL LANGHAM

It’s almost unthinkable that we haven’t had Pride in our lovely city since 2019! Two long years have passed by since we were footloose and fancy-free to celebrate with our friends near and far. I wish you all a safe & special time. As for fitness, I find that I am working extra hard to affect any real changes in my post-Covid body. I wrote last month about how science now knows that it is after 60 that we begin our 3rd stage of aging. And I for one can attest to that as a 66-year-old. Since the gym re-opened, I had been working out three times a week totaling 90 mins and was doing the exercise bike 5 times a week for 60 minutes. But I wasn’t seeing any results or changes like I had in the past. So much of my time has been replaced with watching Netflix that my lymph system was not getting the pump it needed to move my blood or lymph around and fluids were settling in many places all over my body.

32 THESTANDARDPS.COM

My joy and love of dancing was down to maybe 2 hours a week from 20 hours in the past. This might seem surprising as I’m known as the Dancing Queen, but the venues, the city and I have changed. It seems that I may be what is known as a “long-hauler”, a term used to describe those of us that are having residual problems after our bout with Covid. The heat is bothering me which has prevented me from dancing outdoors, so no Oscars T-dance for this girl. But more alarming it that my blood pressure and my pulse rates are going through the roof every time I stand up, making dancing a dangerous thing to do. I will be undergoing tests to see if I indeed do indeed have this syndrome referred to as POTS, which stands for Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome. I will keep you posted. My eating plan which has been about the same for the last 21 years was no longer doing the trick. All those old “trouble” spots were re-emerging, and it made me wonder if this was it! Had I crossed over into the middle-age spread? I no longer had a waist and the fat on my lower back was thick and immovable. No pinching

an inch there, it was a roll! And don’t get me started on the inner thigh and inner upper arm jiggles! I was reminded of the saying that “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over, expecting a different result.” I needed to change!! So, over the last 6 weeks I’ve begun working out with weights twice a day, three times a week and was doing 75-minutes of walking on the treadmill 5-6 days a week for cardio. Within about 25 days, I started seeing a change. My muscles were growing which was allowing my jiggly skin to fill out again. It appeared that increasing the number of hours I did cardio combined with twice a day workouts helped me lose fat and tighten up my skin. I was very happy. Even my clients began commenting that they noticed I was looking leaner and that really made me smile. I felt “proud” that I hadn’t given up on myself and that with a little imagination and lots of elbow grease could change my body at age 66. I had made some changes with my food as well. I’d been eating

6 meals a day for the last 21 years. It had worked very well for many of those years, but I knew it was no longer effective. I began eating less frequently which obviously meant eating less calories. I was afraid that it might result in muscle loss, but it seems that my body was able to adapt. I’ve relayed that I experienced muscle loss with Covid and with both of my vaccines and had been trying to play catch up since then. Over the last 6 weeks with the increase in exercise and cardio that my metabolism was happier and rather than losing muscle and gaining fat that I was instead losing fat and gaining muscle. So, if you, like me, are struggling with a changed body from this pandemic consider a more creative approach. Mix it up as they say. And move, move, move! Wishing you the best in health. Your Dancing/Walking Queen, Jill

Q&A TAKE FIVE WITH MICHAEL CHILDERS We recently sat down with Michael to give us the run down on the event; here’s what he had to say. The Standard Magazine: Hi Michael great to see you and thanks. Let’s start off by talking about the charity that will be benefitting from this year’s event and how you go about selecting which charity to benefit? Michael Childers: I am so glad to be a part of the 35th year of the Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center and their outstanding work that they do for the whole desert. This is our second show with the Center, and this show has been on COVID hold for almost two years. With great delight and enthusiasm, we are so happy that we are able to bring it to the McCallum Theatre as their first big show this year. We look for organizations that do very important work in the Valley, and they support us emotionally for the year it takes us to produce this show. We get constant support from them and their wonderful team. TSM: This year the theme for the event is Back to the ’70s, why this theme and what is the process for choosing the themes for each show? MC: We have done this show for 15 years in the desert. The ’70s is my period, and I love all the music from that era, whether its rock, pop, Broadway, or disco. I am so excited by the music choices that our brilliant director Scott Coulter, and our wonderful music director Todd Schroeder have brought to this show. It is going to be just thrilling. As far as choosing the theme, we just look for anything that is rich in music. TSM: You have been producing this show since 2002, how do you keep it fresh? MC: Because we do a different theme each year, the musical choices keep it fresh, and often we will bring on new performers that fit with our theme. For instance, with our 1970s show, Debby Boone will be performing her hit “You Light Up My Life.” She has never performed in our show before, and we are really looking forward to having her. The same is true of Ken Page, who will be performing a song from his hit Broadway show “Ain’t Misbehavin’.” I am passionate about the show and the team of Broadway and Hollywood singers

that we have developed over the last 15 years. They are some of the best people on Broadway. This year it is thrilling to have Lily Tomlin, who was in the first “One Night Only” in Palm Springs in 2002. She is obviously my good luck charm, and she is starting off the show by reviving some of her best 1970s comedy. TSM: What goes into planning an event like this and how is this year’s planning different due to the pandemic? MC: It is usually 6-7 months of work to produce this show. This time it has been nearly 2 years, because our first production was shut down due to COVID. But the excitement among our supporters is astonishing. Our co-chairs, Terri Ketover and Barbara Fromm, are breaking our fundraising records. As for differences, we will have safety precautions in place per the McCallum’s requirements. TSM: I just read you are working on two documentaries; can you tell us a bit about them? MC: I was just interviewed for a documentary being done on the film “Midnight Cowboy,” which was directed by my late partner John Schlesinger. The director of the documentary, Nancy Buirski, is really focusing on the humanistic elements of the film. I think it’s going to be both informative and very moving. As for the other documentary, filmmakers P. David Ebersole and Todd Hughes are currently putting together a documentary about my life detailing my years as a Hollywood celebrity photographer. It is called “And I’ve Got the Pictures to Prove It” and I can only tell you that it is going to be “delicious.” Thank you Michael for your time and look forward to One Night Only, I know it will be an amazing show as always. ABBA ARE BACK! BY RYAN TURRIN

40 THESTANDARDPS.COM

Agnetha, Björn, Benny and Anni-Frid return with ABBA VOYAGE, a revolutionary concert, 40 years in the making, and a brand-new studio album Voyage

ABBA, one of the most successful pop groups of all time, have today announced that, for the first time in 40 years they are back, with a revolutionary new concert that will see Agnetha, Björn, Benny and Anni-Frid performing digitally with a live 10-piece band, in a purpose-built arena in London from May 27, 2022, and a brandnew studio album. The digital versions of ABBA have been created following weeks and months of motion-capture and performance techniques with the four band members and an 850-strong team from Industrial Light & Magic, the company founded by George Lucas, in what is the company’s first foray into music. Now, an incredible 40 years since their last studio album The Visitors, ABBA have not only recorded two new songs, “I Still Have Faith In You” and “Don’t Shut Me Down,” that will both feature in the concert, but they have recorded and produced an entire new album. Recorded together at Benny’s studio Riksmixningsverket in Stockholm, Voyage will be released worldwide on November 5th on Capitol Records.

ABBA Voyage will open May 27, 2022, at the ABBA Arena, a state-of-the-art 3,000 capacity arena located at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London. The ABBA Voyage concert is made with the help of: Producer Svana Gisla (David Bowie Blackstar/Lazarus, Beyoncé and Jay Z for HBO, Springsteen and I), Producer Ludvig Andersson (And Then We Danced, Yung Lean - “In My Head”, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again), Director Baillie Walsh (Flashbacks of a Fool, Being James Bond, Springsteen and I), Co-Executive Producer Johan Renck (Spaceman, David Bowie Blackstar/Lazarus, Chernobyl) and Choreographer Wayne McGregor CBE (The Royal Ballet, Company Wayne McGregor, Paris Opera Ballet). Svana Gisla, Producer, and Ludvig Andersson, Producer: “The magic of ABBA and the herculean efforts of this whole magnificent team reaches a long-awaited milestone today. To be able to finally share this endeavor with the world is a proud moment for us and we can’t wait to welcome you to our arena in East London, a place where we are so happy to be.” Baillie Walsh, Director: “I watched ABBA win the Eurovision song contest in 1974, and never did I imagine that 47 years later I would be with them on this extraordinary voyage. Life is weird and wonderful sometimes.”

MUSIC Wayne McGregor, Choreographer: “Imagine: growing up in the North of England in the 70’s and learning to ballroom, Latin and disco dance to the incredible songs of ABBA. I was 8 and I was totally transported. Fast forward to 2020, being in Sweden and dancing with ABBA - in real life! I was about to be 50 and I was totally transported again. That is the magic of ABBA. We have shared many creative and joyful adventures with a bold collaborative team to make the impossible possible for ABBA Voyage: technological wizardry, state of the art immersion and entertainment innovation. And still at its searing heart we simply have new songs, new moves, classic songs, classic moves: ABBA is DANCE and always will be. See you on the dancefloor”. Sir Lucian Grainge, Chairman & CEO, Universal Music Group: “From the very beginning of my career and having had the privilege to work with them directly for many years since, it’s been a tremendous joy to be surrounded by ABBA and their music. Their boundless creativity and timeless melodies make us want to partner with them on everything they do because we know it will be simply great.” The music video for “I Still Have Faith In You” has been directed by Shynola. Tickets for ABBA Voyage are available now. Head to abbavoyage.com. ABBA’s studio album Voyage will be released November 5th on Capitol Records. abbavoyage.com @abbavoyage (Twitter, Facebook Instagram, TikTok)

ABOUT ABBA With nearly 400 million albums sold worldwide, 17 No. 1 hits and over 16 million weekly global streams, ABBA are one of the world’s most successful music acts of all time. Ever since their breakthrough with ‘Waterloo’ back in 1974, ABBA’s music has captured the hearts of people all over the world. Today, the songs they created – written and produced by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus and interpreted vocally with passion and commitment by Agnetha Fältskog and AnniFrid “Frida” Lyngstad – are regarded as an important part of the international music canon. In the 21st Century, ABBA are more popular than ever. ABBA Gold, originally released in 1992, recently passed its 1000th week on the UK Album Chart, the first album in history to reach this milestone. Content using the #ABBA hashtag on TikTok recently reached one billion views, without the catalogue officially being available on the platform. ABBA was inducted into the Rock N’Roll Hall of Fame in 2010, and ‘Dancing Queen’, one of their most beloved songs, was added to the GRAMMY Hall of Fame in 2015.

It’s been a while since we made music together. Almost 40 years, actually. We took a break in the spring of 1982 and now we’ve decided it’s time to end it. They say it’s foolhardy to wait more than 40 years between albums, so we’ve recorded a followup to “The Visitors”. To tell the truth, the main inspiration to record again comes from our involvement in creating the strangest and most spectacular concert you could ever dream of. We’re going to be able to sit back in an audience and watch our digital selves perform our songs on a stage in a custom-built arena in London next spring. Weird and wonderful! To all of you who patiently have followed us in some way or another these past decades:

Thank you for waiting - it’s time for a new journey to begin.

COLLAR CONFESSIONS BY JEFF DORTA

A New Novel and HERE TV Series Living authentically is the message that Pastor Eddie Lawrence preaches to his flock at Perpetual Peace Ministries, but does his own truth extend beyond the pulpit? In his debut novel, Collar Confessions: Sharing the Man of God, and the soon-to-be-released Collar Confessions series on Here TV, starring DeAngelo Jackson in his first acting role, author and screenwriter Dwight Allen O’Neal tells the tale of a cleric who spins a tangled web of lies, greed, sex, and addiction. As seen from the pews, Pastor Lawrence is a sanctified leader, a beatified son of God, living a pious life of faith alongside his childhood girlfriend and soon-to-be first lady, Tiara. What parishioners in the congregation do not know is that their beloved curate is far from holy. He possesses prodigious pride, insidious greed, and an unquenchable lust that he satisfies with casual sex with both women and men. Living authentically was the message that Pastor Eddie Lawrence preached to his flock, but his truth went no further than the pulpit. Although he was openly bisexual on social media, the cleric was often sidetracked by being closeted within his church. Living in the light with Tiara for all his congregation to see was one thing. Living a separate secret life with O’Neill, however, would completely flip his life all the way around. Trapped between living authentically and maintaining a façade for family and Church, forces Pastor Lawrence to make some choices that are detrimental to all those around him. Taking a break from the secluded life of his ministry and preaching virtually seems to be the solution to his unholy dilemma, until his real life inevitably catches up with him. New relationships-- both male and female-- give the cleric temporary pleasure, albeit with lots of drama. Tiara is pushing Pastor Lawrence to marry her, while O’Neill instead encourages him to live in his truth. Finding himself entangled in lies, sex, addictions, and webs of deception, Pastor Lawrence must struggle to reconcile these soul-wrenching contradictions, all while trying to preach the word of God every Sunday! In the novel, Pastor Lawrence struggles to reconcile his life’s

soul-wrenching contradictions and juggle relationships with his two fiancés: Tiara and his secret male paramour, O’Neill. Little does he know that he isn’t the only one carrying secrets… “This story deals with the hypocrisy within the church,” says O’Neal. “The church is a place that was created to heal; however, many people in the LGBTQ+ community enter the church and then

are in need of healing. They lead double lives, in constant fear of being discovered. Many turn to social media that is, in essence, a dangerous Pandora’s Box where anything can happen.” When creating the Collar Confessions screenplay, O’Neal and his co-writers, Dane Joseph and Daniel Armando (who also directs the series), originally planned to re-tell the story from the book, but opted instead to tell a new story in the world that the book created. The series explores the journey Pastor Eddie takes after his experiences with the characters in the book. “We challenged ourselves further by looking at the story from the lens of a thriller,” explains Daniel Armando. Nathaniel J. Ryan stars as Pastor Eddie Lawrence in the series. “Pastor Eddie is a man deeply in love with his lover(s) and his husband, however, his insecurities prevent him from remaining monogamous. I think Pastor Eddie is misunderstood, even by himself.” Ryan says he approached the role by looking for similar characteristics within himself that would allow him to empathize

and understand Pastor Eddie better. “Stepping into his shoes and wardrobe helped me to bring the character to life.” Making his film debut in a non-adult movie is 2020 GAYVN Winner DeAngelo Jackson. “I have always dreamed of doing more than adult film work,” Jackson reflects. “When I first read the book, I was thrilled to be able to bring one of the characters to life. After learning the series would be a thriller and I would get to perform stunts on camera and learn fight choreography, I was sold!” “I hope Collar Confessions entertains and inspires viewers to live in truth,” Jackson continues. “Too often, we live our lives for other people, doing what is expected of us but not what makes us happy. I also hope that viewers note the consequences that occur when we decide to hurt people. Every action has a reaction, especially when it comes to matters of the heart.” “We are excited to support original stories that challenge us to be our most truthful selves within interpersonal and professional relationships,” said Emmy-winning Producer and Here TV President John Mongiardo. “The production team at Novo Novus takes diverse

and powerful content to a level specifically designed for Here TV’s exclusive and premium platform distribution.” Collar Confessions is executive produced by Dwight Allen O’Neal, Daniel Armando and Dane Joseph. It premieres on HERE TV on Friday October 8. Dwight Allen O’Neal’s Collar Confessions: Sharing the Man of God is available on Amazon and wherever books are sold.

DAPUPDATE HISTORY HIDES IN THE INITIALS WE USE FOR THE LESBIAN, GAY AND TRANSGENDER COMMUNITIES BY DUSTIN GRUBER

Sometimes an abbreviation or acronym is more than the sum of its letters. Take the well-known abbreviation LGBT and longer variants, like LGBTQQIAAP. Those letters represent our entire community, lesbians; gays; bisexuals; transgender people; and those identifying as queer, intersex, asexual, and more. Did you notice the letter with which all those abbreviations start? That L represents a long history and a lot of controversy in the gay rights movement. About 70 years ago, people sexually attracted to the same gender used to be called homosexuals. That word didn’t age well. Then in the 1950s and 1960s, people began referring to homosexuals as homophiles. That didn’t age well either. In the 1970s, the word gay became embraced by the men formerly known as homosexuals. As the gay rights movement grew, lesbians wanted to create their own identities. Unfortunately, during this turbulent time, animosity began to grow between gay men and lesbians. The genders simply were in different camps, says Dr. Jill “Dr. G” Gover, Director of Behavioral Health at DAP Health. The women felt gay men were sexist and behaved the way all men did at the time, which was to marginalize them, Dr. G says.

There was even a subgroup of lesbians who wanted to separate and have nothing to do with gay men. They were more aligned with straight women around feminist issues. As the gay rights movement expanded during the late 1970s, the abbreviation gays and lesbians began to use for their large, varied community was GLBT. It started with a G, which only underscored how many lesbians felt about their place in the community. Many women active in gay rights felt it was time to address that issue, says Dr. G., who taught LGBTQ+ history at California State University, San Bernardino. And people started to become more aware of the role lesbians played within the gay rights movement. Moving an L in front of a G may seem trivial to many, but symbols don’t have to be grand gestures. That change was meant to honor the women who also were part of the gay rights movement, Dr. G says. The AIDS crisis in the 1980s changed everything. As the Reagan Revolution swept across the nation and the Material Girl told us she felt “Like A Virgin” before assuring us she would keep her baby, scores of gay men contracted HIV and died of AIDS. It was an exploding, unstoppable pandemic whose barbarity is too easy to forget 40 years later. We learned that “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” while “Video

DAPUPDATE Killed the Radio Star.” MTV landed on the moon and shaped a generation. Steven Spielberg introduced us to E.T., while ALF hid out in the San Fernando Valley. Betamax lost to VHS. The United States boycotted the 1980 Summer Olympics. Four years later, the Soviet Union followed suit. Pac-Man took the country by storm, and everyone tried to solve a puzzle in a cube. Freddie Mercury stole the show at Wembley Stadium in 1985 during Live Aid. Two years later, he tested positive for AIDS and died four years after that. That was the 1980s, and it felt like no one in America cared about those who died of AIDS. Many of the sick and dying men didn’t have children or were estranged from their biological families, says Dr. G. Too many had

no one. Lesbians stepped up and started to take care of those dying of AIDS, becoming primary caregivers to the sick and dying. “That was a huge shift in terms of the community coming together and healing around the riffs between the men and the women,” Dr. G says. Because of the compassion and humanity lesbians showed gay men, much of the separatism of the 1970s disappeared in the 1980s. The LGBTQ+ community began to see their future linked as they worked together to survive the HIV and AIDS pandemic. The LGBT community is large and complex, with many groups, subcultures, organizations, and histories. There are many initials people use to identify it, including LGBTQ+, LGBTQIA+, LGBTI, LGBTQQ, and more. Each one of those initials starts with an L. The placement of that L is far from trivial. It’s a recognition that lesbians are not secondclass members of their community. In reality, they kept the community together during its darkest days.
