FEATURE A GLIMPSE INTO THE FUTURE BY ROBERTO LOZANO Every year, we challenge ourselves (and each other) to predict all sorts of trends for the year ahead. Rolling out the annual trend forecast is purely done for fun. But there’s a certain level of uncertainty in making educated guesses about what will be in and out when all you really must go off is a gut feeling. Who really knows what 2024 will bring? Let’s see if any of these trends (speculations?) come to fruition. These trends reflect the changing needs and desires of consumers and will likely shape the way we live and work in the coming years. Here we take a glimpse of just a few of the trends for 2024 we are hearing about.

TECH TRENDS 2024

It would be a year that would challenge our resilience and push the boundaries of what we believed possible. As we zoom into the uncharted territory of 2024, the future looks like it’s detoured through the fast lane of innovation and unpredictability.

From Bots To Agents: The Rise Of Intelligent Assistants According to Bill Gates, the shift from bots to agents will be the biggest revolution in computing since we went from typing commands to tapping on icons, and 2024 could be the year of commercializing personal agents. Personal agents, capable of understanding natural language and executing complex tasks, are poised to become ubiquitous, transforming industries, enhancing productivity, and redefining our interactions with technology.

2 Green Energy Milestone: A Turning Point For Sustainability In a watershed moment for the global transition to clean energy, renewables are poised to surpass one-third of global power generation in 2024. This landmark achievement, driven by unprecedented solar and wind power growth, marks a pivotal juncture in the fight against climate change. As world leaders convene at COP28 in Dubai to discuss strategies for achieving net-zero emissions and building resilience to climate impacts, the burgeoning adoption of renewables serves as a beacon of hope, demonstrating the world’s commitment to a sustainable future.

3 Meetings 3.0 And Office Real Estate Impact The future of work is all about Meetings 3.0. The ongoing hybrid work revolution is reshaping traditional meeting dynamics and office needs. Technology, particularly Generative AI, is enhancing both physical and virtual meeting spaces. Video conferencing will evolve with real-time analysis, creating breakout rooms and AI-driven whiteboards, turning notes into tasks. Real-time translation will eliminate language barriers. In 2024, virtual meetings will become immersive, AI-powered experiences, transforming traditional meeting rooms into flexible, high-impact spaces.

4 Space Odyssey 2024: Not Just For Astronauts Forget “the sky’s the limit” – in 2024, the sky is just the beginning. The space landscape is set for a dramatic transformation in 2024 as emerging technologies converge to revolutionize space commerce. Satellite services, space exploration, and on-orbit activities will become commonplace, driven by a fusion of international cooperation and strategic competition. And not to mention, we might have Jeff Bezos’ partner, Lauren Sanchez, leading an all-female crew on spaceflight in early 2024 aboard Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket. This groundbreaking mission will mark a significant milestone for women in space exploration and underscore the transformative potential of private spaceflight.

5 Crude To Chemicals: Fueling The Future The oil and gas industry are undergoing a seismic shift with the rise of Crude-to-Chemicals processing. Electric vehicles are taking over, and oil and gas companies are finding new life in the chemical game. It’s a win-win, with the potential for higher profits and a greener planet, contributing to a future where fossil fuels are utilized more efficiently.

FEATURE Augmented Reality Unleashed: A New Reality A breakthrough in augmented reality arrives with the development of flexible, transparent displays. 3D printing and innovative polymers pave the way for sleeker, user-friendly wearable devices, fostering the growth of the Metaverse and opening avenues in education and healthcare. In education, AR displays could enable interactive and engaging learning experiences, while in healthcare, AR displays could be used in medical training. Get ready for a future where your reality might be more augmented than your Instagram photos.

Cars, Skies, And Beyond The autonomous world is no longer a sci-fi dream; it will be a reality and a $10 trillion opportunity by 2030. The year 2024 witnesses the dawn of autonomous travel, with Level 3 autonomous driving introduced by major vehicle OEMs. It’s not just about self-driving cars; Level 3 is a whole new era of getting from point A to point B, with or without a steering wheel. Land and sky converge as electric air taxi services debut in Paris for the 2024 Olympics, signaling the beginning of a new era in mobility.

Personalized And Precision Medicine Takes Center Stage 2024 is going to be the year of personalized medicine. Your treatment plan is no longer one-size-fits-all; it’s tailored to your genes. Tailored treatment plans, gene editing technologies like CRISPR, and rapid diagnostics revolutionize healthcare, promising better patient outcomes and resource efficiency. CRISPR is not just a gene-editing tool; it’s your ticket to a healthcare revolution. It’s like having a doctor who knows you better than you know yourself.

Rise Of The Meta City Move over, megacities; Meta Cities are here. It’s a virtual network of cities tied to major economic hubs. Thanks to digital technology, cities are no longer just physical; they’re interconnected in ways we never imagined. The future is a city that’s both real and virtual, where physical proximity meets digital connectivity.

TRAVEL TRENDS The next year is looking to be filled with authentic, soul-changing, and planet-oriented experiences in line with our rising consciousness. Here, we present you with the travel trends that will shape 2024 to assist you in your planning journeys and help you make the most of your travel time. In 2024, travelers will be putting what’s important to them front and center of their plans, valuing deeper experiences that leave a positive impact, time spent with loved ones, and wellness moments that last well after checkout. Today is an exciting time for travel and trends research. Why? Every generation is traveling! Gen Z is on the move. So are

Millennials, Gen Xers and Baby Boomers. This mix of generations, life stages and experiences are fostering a diverse and inspiring mix of travel expectations and adventures. Although generations have their differences, one area where they align is their enthusiasm for travel and seeking memorable travel experiences that meet their unique needs. One important finding is the cross-generational priority for connectivity and personalization throughout the travel experience. This bodes well for fueling innovation in the travel industry and for travel leaders, who are creating new and unique experiences that attract all generations of adult travelers. Here are a few trends to bear in mind when making your travel plans for 2024.

Travelers Will Invest in Their Sleep Personal wellness matters to travelers, but even more specifically, there will be an increased focus on achieving a good night’s sleep while on the road. In 2024, travelers will look to engage with products and brands aligned with this better-for-you imperative.

Culture and Experiences Will Drive Leisure Travel Decisions Dining, culture and connections are inspiring leisure travel decisions as people increasingly prioritize the purchase of experiences over things. Next year, foodies will reign supreme, with culinary experiences prioritized globally and across generations. In tandem, people will travel to learn about other cultures, learn about their own culture and connect with others.

JANUARY 2024 17

FEATURE Sustainable Tourism With travel coming under the microscope regarding environmental damage, it’s not surprising that more and more people are looking for more sustainable alternatives. According to a report from the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) and the Trip.com Group, 69% of travelers are actively seeking sustainable travel options in 2023 – and there’s no sign of that trend slowing down. An increase in automated bookings Perhaps unsurprisingly, given our increasing reliance on tech, one of the biggest trends predicted in travel for 2024 is automated bookings. Automated (online and app) bookings in travel aren’t new, but they are expected to see dramatic growth over the next couple of years. To give you an idea, in 2020 the online travel booking market was worth $432 billion. By 2025, this is estimated to rise to $833 billion. Advertising in the places your customers are searching for their holidays is vital; from people just starting their research to those ready to make a booking, using programmatic enables you to tailor your messaging to where your customers are in the funnel and push them towards that ‘book’ button. Bleisure Trips As its name may suggest, bleisure travel is the blurring of lines between travelling for business and leisure. Basically, it involves extending or combining a work trip with leisure travel for just yourself, or with friends and family. So, you may book a few days’ city break before or after a conference, or bag a week at the beach after a big meeting in another country. Bleisure travel started to grow in popularity in 2023 as lockdowns eased and has become so popular it’s predicted to take over business travel, with over 89% of people planning to add personal vacation time to their business trips.

Bucket-List-Worthy Trips We’re not done with revenge travel yet, as bucket-list destinations are still a booking trend. Our dreams for something big, exotic, and outlandish / faraway are coming to life with once-in-a-lifetime trips. There is nothing to wait for; life is happening right now, and this will be evident in the travel trends for 2024.

Transformational Trips One trend reported in 2023 that continue in popularity are wellness getaways, or transformational trips. Many travelers today don’t want to come back from their holiday less fit and healthy than when they left – they want to return a better version of themselves. As a result, there’s a growing trend for seeking out holidays and trips that combine experiences that boost our health and wellbeing, and even our knowledge. Think yoga or meditation retreats, cultural trips, outward bound explorations and cooking holidays. With the rise of spirituality and the desire to discover one’s purpose, people are on the lookout for transformational trips that will leave a mark on their life’s path. That’s why people are turning to wellness retreats, cultural trips, or even cooking holidays. They hold the promise to turn our lives around by fusing wellbeing with gaining new knowledge about ourselves and the world. Whether it’s a silent retreat deep in the woods, an Ayahuasca ceremony in Peru, or trekking across Tibet / or visiting monks in Tibet, transformational trips will be a key travel trend in 2024.

FASHION TRENDS Men’s fashion is on the cusp of a dynamic transformation as we approach 2024, bringing a blend of nostalgia and modernity that promises to redefine the landscape of contemporary style. From the resurgence of low-top basketball sneakers and baggy pants to

Low Top Basketball Sneakers Low-top basketball sneakers flawlessly pair with relaxed-fit pants. Embrace a minimalistic approach by selecting shoes with no more than three colors. For a cohesive ensemble, wear low tops alongside straight or wideleg trousers.

the enduring allure of leather biker jackets and sleek trenches, this fashion-forward forecast is set to captivate the sartorial senses of every modern man.

Leather Biker Jacket Look sharp and stay ahead of the style curve with leather biker jackets! This timeless piece is going strong, giving any outfit an edge. Forgo a full-on Marlon Brando look for more modern pieces like wide-leg pants, chunky sneakers, and hoodies to blend old and new. Invest in one now—you’ll be able to wear it again without the risk of being labeled outdated.

Baggy Pants Slim and skinny-fit pants have dominated for years, but now wide-leg pants are making a grand comeback in men’s casual fashion. Instead of going all-in on the JNCO style from yesteryear, adopt a more refined approach—choose wide-leg styles with a tapered fit from the knee down, ensuring comfort without drowning in fabric.

Sleeker Trenches The trench coat is back and better than ever, boasting sleek updates such as a long singlebreasted silhouette, no epaulets, and a heavy-duty mac construction. Start building your 2024 mood board with this enduring classic and take inspiration from anticipated designs by Burberry and its new creative director, Daniel Lee.

Double Denim Double denim has evolved into a timeless classic while maintaining its status as a trendy staple. If you’re seeking a way to stand out from the crowd, embrace double or even triple denim. Top fashion designers have showcased their denim creations on the catwalk—Y/Project with rinsewashed ponchos over longline trenches, Prada’s Western shirts paired with rugged denim, and Givenchy’s sleeveless vests accompanied by ripped bottoms.

Sweater Vests Sweater vests, once considered unfashionable, are now a stylish wardrobe essential. To modernize this trend, pair your vest with a t-shirt and fitted jeans, and complete the look with statement sneakers for a cool style statement.

Get Tanked Swap out your standard T-shirt for a tank top featuring a low-cut neckline for a relaxed, effortless look that keeps you cool. Pair it with unstructured blazers, lightweight jackets, or oxford button-downs for an easy yet stylish ensemble.

Galactic Metallics Designers take fashion to cosmic heights with striking galactic metallics on the runway. Bianca Saunders showcased boxy silver lamé menswear and matching shoes, while Etro’s floaty shirting and Erdem’s sequinembellished tops and cosmic trousers captured a celestial vibe. Get ready for a stylish space odyssey!

INDESIGN NEW YEAR, NEW PERSPECTIVE. MODERNISM & TRADITION BY DANN FOLEY

Each year at this time many of us cannot help but relive, reminisce or maybe, regret the year that has just passed. We look to the future, hope for better, plan for something more or different. This year, that got me thinking about the seeming great divide between Modernists and Traditionalists. I ask myself, why all the fuss? As in many subjects that offer contrasting opinions, upon greater reflection, we find more commonality then division. The idea of Modernism is borne from a desire for something new, a break with the past. To get to that place of radical change, one must first have an understanding as to what has come before to cause the shift. These schools of thought (in design) are not mutually exclusive, their paths intersect and cross. I would suggest, one does not exist without the other because it is in the contrast that inspiration and enlightenment is found. Now before I go any further, I promise you that I am not here to wax poetic on the subject. I am here, as always, to relate this idea to how we choose to live and how our choices shape our world, the world that we each call home. You see, ultimately it does not matter which design aesthetic you choose to live within, it only matters if you have surrounded yourself with the things that move you, influence you and cause you to remain present, as to how you live. Antiquity in design does not have to be the opposite of Modernism. Antiquity or Traditionalism speaks to a richness of the past and places high value on tradition and continuity. In an area of the country where great deference and respect is given to the MidCentury Modern design style, I recognize in that distinct style choice, we/you are still honoring the past and giving credence to the tradition of the movement’s beginnings.

is never about having a new sofa, chair, or paint color. What you choose to surround yourself with and how you present yourself to those you invite into your home is what vocalizes the narrative, in an unspoken way. Enduring design can be of any style of your choosing and the intersection of design styles cannot only enhance the other but, also define a personal style that is unique. Just because you choose to live in a design scape that is modern, does not mean you cannot include elements of obvious traditionalism, and vice versa. So, let’s get down to it. I am always fond of using bullet points to illustrate and inspire how you might apply this theory to your own home. Once again, I will remind you that the actual design style does not matter. The overlap and variety of your choices produces the tailor-made lifestyle of your dreams. •

• Motivation is a key component to great personal design. We are motivated to live better, to have a home of beauty, comfort and pride. I have written many times in these very pages about, “telling your story.” The choices we make define us and how we live. If those choices help to define who we are, then the things we live with are the physical realization of those choices. Defining your personal style

22 THESTANDARDPS.COM

Adding modern lighting fixtures to a traditional setting enlivens both, and the contemporary lighting sources and directional possibilities of the light can create an almost theatrical outcome. Mixing modern or contemporary art (abstracts, photography, etc.) with traditional pieces (paintings, watercolors, etc.) can create a moment of design poignancy that defines a grouping as a highly personal collection. Try using traditional and ornate frames on modern art. The overlaying of one with the other is more than a story of contrasts, it creates drama. One of my favorite floor coverings in a modern space is a traditional rug. The pattern and palette add warmth, beauty and richness to your room setting. Fabric is one of the truly transcendent elements in decorating. Try modern fabrics on traditional pieces and traditional fabrics on contemporary pieces. The look is fabulous! Color…it doesn’t matter what style of home you are creating, color is the easiest way define how you live. Use color with abundance and use it fearlessly.

I often hear clients tell me that they choose a neutral offering over the one of color because they are afraid they will tire of the color too quickly. I can state, with absolute certainty, that this is not the case. When you live with what you love, there ceases to be a question of what is in or out. As we enter a year of change and uncertainty, I wish you a 2024 filled with health, family, friends and comfort. The greatest gift you can give yourself, is the gift of wholehearted honesty. It will guide you through your day and help you create a home of beauty and sincerity, and those are the corner stones of meaningful and lasting design.

BOOK REVIEW ALWAYS OVERBOOKED BY TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER Auditions are always nerve-wracking. Will the part be yours? You sure practiced enough before you were judged – and that’s what an audition is, a judgment. Can you handle the lines? Are you a fit for the part you want, or would you be better at a walk-on? Being someone else in a play is fun, but not always easy. Neither, says Jim Fielding in his new book “All Pride, No Ego,” is being someone else at work. Born in Toledo into a big extended clan, Jim Fielding says that it looked like he was a member of “the perfect, nuclear family.” The truth was, though, that “vulnerabilities and dysfunctions were numerous” and that included homophobia, which was a problem: when he was six years old, Fielding realized he was gay. To cover for it, he became an overachiever with a lack of selfconfidence and an abundance of insecurities. To help him to conquer his weaknesses, he built a great support system but still, “I wish I had a book like this when I was starting out in my career.” His first point here is his mantra: “Control the controllable but leave space for the possible.” Color “within the lines” if you must but do it at “a company whose ethics and values align with your own.” If you’re in control, set clear goals, “hire people who are smarter than you are” and get to know them well. “Never stop learning.” Accept that you can forgive without forgetting transgressions. Remember that if the job is right, you won’t have to change who you fundamentally are. Learn to “define FAMILY however it works for you...” Know the difference between want and need. Trust your intuition, tamp down impulsiveness, but be flexible – which will help you attract and keep the best team possible. Know that selfishness is a righteous thing sometimes. Strive always for “cultures of excellence.” And always “leave [your] corner of the world a better place than [you] found it.” Donate. Volunteer. Do good. In his preface, author Jim Fielding says that he wrote this book because he “realized that my leadership style and success... are completely dependent on my personal journey.” Those words should alert readers that “All Pride, No Ego” is preponderantly a memoir, which isn’t a bad thing, but it bears mentioning. If you don’t have the patience it takes for rambling stories, you won’t like this book at all, in fact. Fielding is a storyteller, and he smartly uses his experiences to show, not tell, in a way that’s pleasant

and relatable for anyone who’s ever struggled at work. Yes, the workplace tales mean that business advice is sometimes embedded, sometimes apparent, and sometimes down a rabbit hole for you to follow but for most readers, it’ll be a useful scavenger hunt. While this book is perhaps best for the person who’s looking for a first job or who just found one and is sweating to fit in, “All Pride, No Ego” is worthwhile for anyone. Enjoy the memoir, find the helpful parts. “All Pride, No Ego: A Queer Executive’s Journey to Living and Leading Authentically” by Jim Fielding c.2023, Wiley $28.00 213 pages

LOCAL NEWS PLAZA THEATRE RESTORATION PROJECT BY BOB BOGARD

The Palm Springs Plaza Theatre Foundation announced that the Palm Springs City Council unanimously approved hiring Woodcliff Construction of Los Angeles as the general contractor to oversee the comprehensive renovation of the historic Plaza Theatre. The report prepared by City Staff stated that it had fully vetted and recommended the contractor. The Council had recently approved an agreement between the City of Palm Springs and the Plaza Theatre Foundation that further defined the role the Foundation will play in the restoration and management of the Theatre, which is owned by the City of Palm Springs.

28 THESTANDARDPS.COM

While the Foundation has already raised $15.2M, rising construction costs and anticipated opening expenses require the City to secure an additional $20 million to complete the project. The Staff report outlined a recommended financing strategy to provide up to $20M in City funds to ensure that the project proceeds on schedule and identified funding sources including continued fundraising. The projected annual tax revenue (with a conservative estimate of $2M-$4M per year) will generate income for the City. The Foundation is continuing its effort to raise funds for the Theatre’s renovation, on-going operations, and future programming toward the $20 million advanced.

“We are thrilled that the Council and Staff have selected an appropriate contractor for the restoration of the Plaza Theatre,” said Foundation President J.R. Roberts. “We are also elated that the City has identified additional funding sources to help this project break ground in 2024 and open in 2025. It is important to point out that the Plaza Theatre restoration project will not negatively impact other city initiatives and that the project will generate tax income and economic benefits to the City for years to come.” In the case of the restoration of the Plaza Theatre, there are many factors that contribute to the increased project cost, including the sometimes-delicate nature of restoring an historic building. Prepandemic estimates of the project were based on projections by the architects and others associated with the project in the early days. Since the project began in 2019, those involved have been able to get deep into the actual structure of the Theatre. They now have a much more complete understanding about the actual conditions and what is likely to be encountered during the restoration. Accordingly, part of the increase represents a 12.5% contingency for the construction. The City and the Plaza Theatre Foundation decided not to scale back the full restoration plan or reduce the quality of the finished project. The Foundation is committed to delivering a ‘state of the art’ building to the community upon completion. In the spring of 2023, the city asked the Foundation to expand its scope of the project to include managing the opening and ongoing operations of the Theatre. City Council approved a resolution on this issue in the summer of 2023, although no funding for opening costs were included. At the time, the Foundation Board enthusiastically voted to expand its mission and fundraising push to raise the additional funds required to open. The Board is finalizing negotiations with Oak View Group, operator of the Acrisure Arena, to provide those services. ABOUT WOODCLIFF CONSTRUCTION As part of the approval process, the City recently issued a call for bids for companies wishing to participate in the historic restoration of the iconic Downtown structure. As the Theatre is a City-owned building, the contract was required to be approved by the Council. City Staff sought fully qualified contractors and found that Woodcliff Construction was the lowest bid from the firms that submitted and met or surpassed all the requirements. The firm was also approved by Architectural Resources Group, Inc. (ARG), the architects overseeing the process. ARG’s plan will restore the theatre for its new role as a vibrant cultural center in Downtown Palm Springs.

LOCAL NEWS

“This approval is a significant milestone for the restoration of the Plaza Theatre,” said Foundation President J.R. Roberts. “The selection of Woodcliff Construction means we can now begin the construction phase of this project while we continue to raise funds to support it. There are many ways in which the public may continue to play a significant role in the Plaza Theatre restoration, including becoming a Founder, securing a Naming Opportunity for seats or other areas of the building, or making a general donation. We look forward to providing this venue as an exciting part of the City’s revitalized Downtown.” CITYWIDE AND DOWNTOWN ECONOMIC BENEFITS Restoration and modernization of this important City facility provides numerous tangible benefits for the community and helps deliver on the City’s previously announced downtown vision. The project provides dozens of construction jobs that will pay prevailing wage, and when completed, the Plaza Theatre will be a new downtown arts and entertainment venue. Restauranteur Liz Osotich (Farm, Front Door, Clandestino, and Tac/Quila) said: “The Plaza is going to bring a lot more foot traffic and it’s going to keep people in downtown Palm Springs, which is really going to be a huge bonus for our community. There are a lot

30 THESTANDARDPS.COM

of great hiking venues and some beautiful hotels, but there’s not a lot of entertainment downtown. This is going to provide an opportunity for residents and people coming into the Palm Springs area to have a place to go to see a show. I can’t tell you how many times people in our restaurants ask their server ‘What can we do for entertainment?’ and we’re almost at a loss sometimes, so this is going to be such a great boon for residents and tourists alike.” The Theatre will also provide community engagement and pride through opportunities to support diverse and educational programming. When the restoration is completed, the Plaza Theatre will serve the community by hosting many kinds of events and productions and will be an exciting venue in downtown Palm Springs for live performances, film premieres, community and educational events, films, and much more. It is projected that the restoration work will take approximately one year to complete, allowing the Plaza Theatre to open in 2025.

The Palm Springs Plaza Theatre Foundation is a non-profit 501(c) (3) charitable organization and contributions are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. For more information or to donate contact Foundation President J.R. Roberts at 415-297-9309 or visit www.SaveThePlazaTheatrePS.org

NYE HIGHLIGHTS DAP HEALTH ALL IN THE FAMILY BY TREY BURNETTE

How spouses Andy and Johnny Glorioso found themselves both working in sexual wellness at DAP Health — and loving it. Andy Glorioso, who’s been HIV+ since 1986, has worked in HIV/ AIDS social services for 23 years. In 2018, he finished his last day of work at San Diego’s largest clinic, jumped in his packed car, and drove out to Palm Springs. The next morning, he was at his new job at DAP Health, where he currently serves as PrEP navigation manager. While Andy was settling into Palm Springs, Johnny was relocating from San Francisco — where he’d worked for more than two decades as an E.R./trauma nurse — to similarly create his new desert home. He first discovered the Orange Clinic (as DAP Health’s Palm Springs sexual wellness clinic is known) as a patient. He has been on PrEP for five years, and still uses the clinic for quarterly checkups. From the beginning, he loved the availability of free services and the openness of providers. Both men understand stigma and anxiety are intricately linked to sexual behavior and health, and that normalizing frank talk about sex and sexual wellness is the first step in caring for their respective patients. Their mission is to empower through education. After a patient tests negative for HIV, Andy can get them started on PrEP, the pre-exposure prophylaxis that uses antiviral medications to help prevent the spread of the virus. There are a variety of drugs available — some are daily pills; another is a bimonthly injection. Using a judgment-free attitude, Andy helps patients decide which path is best for theirs needs. Using the same “come as you are” mindset, Johnny does patients’ PrEP follow-up, testing them for HIV and sexual transmitted infections (STIs). He soothes those who test positive for either, explaining treatment of the former and quick and easy cures for the latter. “Once they leave the clinic, we don’t know what happens,” says Andy of the patients under the men’s care. “But occasionally, I get an email that says, ‘Thank you. My experience and the information I received was life changing.’ Then I know what we did — what we are doing — is working.” Though both had a connection to DAP Health, the two first met on a dating app mere weeks after each moved to Palm Springs. Their first chat was a long one. The next night, they saw a movie. Within a few months, they’d moved in together. Marriage happened six months after that, with Andy taking Johnny’s last name. By 2022, Johnny was working as a sexual health nurse at

36 THESTANDARDPS.COM

The Dock, as the Orange Clinic was known when it debuted within the Barbara Keller LOVE Building in 2015. The space opened its rebranded doors in the newly renovated, former county structure christened the Annette Bloch CARE Building across the way in January 2023. The sexual wellness clinic in Indio was unveiled in July 2022. The two present clinics currently serve about 1,075 patients per month. A third DAP Health sexual wellness clinic opened at the Stonewall Medical Center in Cathedral City last December 16. It’s not just within the walls of DAP Health that the Gloriosos are making a difference. Part of the sexual wellness outreach team, they both participate at local events such as Pride, Leather Pride, International Bear Convergence, and White Party Palm Springs. The Orange Clinic has also partnered with several live-in rehabs in the valley, offering education and free testing. And it’s not just at work that Andy and Johnny are peppered with questions about sexual wellness. They’re social, and people know what they do for a living, so friends and acquaintances aren’t shy about seeking professional advice, either face to face or via Facebook Messenger. The men are more than happy to bring interested parties into the DAP Health family. The couple loves living in Palm Springs and working at DAP Health. They were drawn to the city and the organization for their respective progressive attitudes and values. DAP Health, like the men, cares about community. They agree the nonprofit is different from any other place they’ve worked — or visited as patients. “We treat and educate people, at no cost to them, all without an ounce of shame,” says Johnny, adding that birth control, pregnancy testing, and other support services are also now available. “It’s work that each of us takes to heart.” Then there’s the fact that they’re always near each other from eight to four. “The real joy for me is seeing my husband throughout the course of the day,” says Andy. “We generally have a good time together, so we also have fun together at work.” “Except when the natural way we relate to each other in private spills over,” adds Johnny with a wink and a smile. “To give you an example, when I was gone for a few hours recently, Andy apparently decided to clean out all of my work drawers the way he thought they should be. And when I came back, I couldn’t find anything — just like at home!”

PERSPECTIVE TALES FROM A CRUISE BY JILL LANGHAM

As you all know, I love to travel and always enjoy going on cruises, particularly gay cruises. During my most recent adventure while on the ship’s dance floor, I did connect and converse over the very loud music (see last month’s article) with some new and wonderful people, two of whom I haven’t been able to stop thinking about. Why might you wonder? It’s because they were found dead in their cabin the morning we disembarked. These two lovely, young, 30-something’s were living large and loving life. We connected around not only my dancing but my earrings of all things, with one of them asking if he might be able to borrow them for Saturday night’s White Party. We talked/shouted for a good half-hour and had a blast. We exchanged cards so that we could get together for the jewelry exchange. I put it into my handy fanny pack for safe keeping and said bye for now.

40 THESTANDARDPS.COM

As it happened, I was one of way too many cruisers who contracted Norovirus and by White Party night, I was cabin-bound and did not go to the party. They in turn never contacted me so I just chalked it up to another dance floor convo, with great expectations, that resulted in nothing. But, in this case it was my last opportunity to be with these two beautiful, young men with so much life in front of them. I did not hear about their deaths until Halloween night back in Palm Springs. To say, I was shocked, is a huge understatement. I’m sad to admit that I have been on many cruises where we have lost one of our brothers. There is no shade or judgement here on any level because the Atlantis cruises are and have always been absolutely wonderful for me and I wish I could afford to take more than one a year! It’s something I really look forward to.

So on Halloween, a close friend who was asking about my time on the cruise asked how I felt about the deaths, to which I replied, “What deaths?” He explained what he was told and I very reluctantly asked if he happened to know the names of the deceased, imagining that I would not know them as there were 2600 gay men on board. Luck was not on my side when he shared their names, one of whose first name was the last name of an old boyfriend of mine, causing it to stick in my mind. I felt flabbergasted, shocked, dumbfounded, sad and creepy all at the same time! I composed myself and after a while made my way to the bar. I was really shook-up. I ordered my usual glass of Prosecco and reached into my fanny pack to pay. As I pulled out a stash of cash, something fell on the floor. As I bent down to pick it up, I nearly collapsed when in my hand was their card! I would love to share their card in this article but we all know how inappropriate and improper it would be. But trust me when I tell you that this card sits on my kitchen countertop, which is both my dinner table and office all in one. I look at it at least six times a day when I’m preparing my meals.

I have lost so many people since moving to Palm Springs, upwards of 150 or more beautiful souls, but these were by far the youngest which may be why it has hit me so hard. I will probably never know the truth about what caused them to die but I’m certain most of us are thinking about GHB, or Fentanyl, two realities in today’s gay world. I will admit that there have been times when I’ve questioned myself and have said when is enough, enough? For those two men, the answer is sadly obvious but we are here and have the choice to answer that question for ourselves before it is too late. I’m sending my deepest love to you all. Please always be safe and careful in the coming year because each of you are precious to me and I don’t want to lose one more of you. XOXO, Jill, Your grief-stricken, Dancing Queen

FEATURE KINK GETS WILDE BY STEVEN BOYCE all your needs! From mild to Wilde, I have the range to fill all sorts of fantasies. Have you always been Wilde? Growing up, were you a rule-breaker? Definitely. I enjoy the rush of a little trouble. I’ve always liked testing the limits of rules. You seem to authentically enjoy having sex on film. A vast majority of the time, yes, I do. There are times, however, when work is really work and that’s when I have to rely on being a talented performer. Do you prefer the content you make to be fantasy-based or more reality-driven? It depends on the chemistry between me and the model I am working with. There are definitely fun aspects of both. How kinky can you get on set? Have you seen my work? My BDSM activities with KinkMen.com have led to some pretty intense scenes. I’ve filmed in public and engaged in some very hectic group scenes. It would be hard to pick the wildest scene I have made.

Christian Wilde, the popular adult film star, is stepping behind the camera in 2024, and making his directorial debut with new films on Kinkmen.com. As a performer, Wilde has captivated audiences with his magnetic presence and willingness to embrace unconventional narratives. He’s known for pushing boundaries by bravely exploring diverse facets of his sexuality with any and all genders. As he steps into the director’s chair, Christian Wilde says his aim is to infuse his unique perspective of sensuality into every frame and maybe even redefine the adult film landscape. His collaboration with KinkMen.com is anticipated to yield a series of films that not only cater to the site’s loyal audience but also attract new viewers seeking a fresh and nuanced approach to adult entertainment. How would you describe the Christian Wilde brand? Christian Wilde is the all-around daddy who will take care of

42 THESTANDARDPS.COM

Have you ever turned down doing a scene? I’ve turned them down from studios that I’ve heard have a less than stellar reputation. I know not everyone has the ability to, but I try to only work for companies that I trust and that my colleagues say good things about. What are the hard parts of porn? The impact it has on the body. Also, the stigma from the civilian population, and the multiple layers of work it takes to be a successful person in the industry. What are the aspects of adult film that you like best? A good deal of the time on set is often casual and relaxed. Similar to how I imagine it to be in an office setting, coworkers become friends. I just happen to also bang my coworkers. Do you like getting Wilde with coworkers off-set? Nowadays, I don’t get as crazy. I simply enjoy having friends over to my house for backyard fires and hang outs. Anytime friends

come from out of town or there’s locals that want to do something, I always love to host. Has being in front of the camera helped you in your new role as director? Immeasurably! I know what to ask for from models when looking for the best shot and more importantly, I know how to ask for it. I understand what is likely going through their head while filming because I’ve been in their position. You could have chosen to direct for any studio. Why did you choose to collaborate with KinkMen.com and their Bound Gods channel? It’s the most unique experience in adult film. In real life, we never actually get to play out these scenarios. The activities we do in these films would land someone in jail for assault! On the KinkMen. com set, we get to explore the mind as well as the body and push limits and boundaries in a very specific and serious way. What is it about kink films that get you excited? The raw connection. I started learning about kink in 2009 and it has 100% shaped the person I am now. I love the deep connection I feel with someone after seeing them go through the experience. Do you connect with fans online? All the time! People ask me for strange things! Toenail clippings, old socks, things like that. But my favorite is when people ask if they can come be my personal slave forever! Awfully tempting. Are any of the Christian Wilde-directed films available yet? Yes! A few of my Bound Gods are already out and available to be watched! My scene with Colt Spence and Ethan Sinn where Colt plays a new hire and Ethan is the asshole boss is pretty incredible. Both guys really killed it. Who would you most like to direct in a film? Hard to say. I really just want to direct models who are passionate about what they’re making and who want to do a really great job creating something wonderful. What’s your advice to young adult talent who hope to have the career longevity that you have enjoyed? Be professional! Take this as a job and be good at the basics. Also, stay true to yourself and don’t do anything you are not comfortable with simply for clicks or followers. What would you be doing if you weren’t Christian Wilde? Probably living in the woods somewhere, running around naked in nature and being a weird little mountain man. Visit KinkMen.com

TRANSCENDANCE EMBRACING INCLUSIVITY: TRANSGENDER INDIVIDUALS IN WOMEN’S SPORTS BY JACQUELYN JAMES Sports have long been a platform for individuals to showcase their talents, determination, and passions. In recent years, the conversation surrounding transgender individuals participating in women’s sports has sparked intense and sometimes violent debate. While some may argue that it creates an unfair advantage, it is crucial to approach this issue with empathy, respect, and a commitment to inclusivity. By considering the experiences and rights of transgender athletes, we can navigate this complex issue while striving to create a more equitable and accepting sporting landscape. There is a path forward to a solution. Let’s use and apply rationality and just plain common sense on this topic. Recognizing the concerns raised by those who question the inclusion of transgender women in women’s sports is essential and needs to be respected. Critics argue that biological differences between cisgender and transgender women may lead to perceived advantages in strength, speed, or endurance. However, it is important to note that this argument overlooks the wide range of physical abilities displayed within any group of athletes, regardless of gender identity. It is also equally important to fully understand what changes a person goes through when they have been on hormone or testosterone treatments at the beginning and throughout their transitioning. Developing policies that protect the integrity of women’s sports while ensuring inclusivity is an Important and extremely delicate task. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has set guidelines for transgender participation, requiring hormone levels to be within specific ranges for at least 12 months before competition. This approach aims to balance the desire for fairness with respect for an individual’s gender identity. Adhering to such guidelines can help mitigate potential concerns without unduly excluding transgender athletes from competing in their identified gender category. But wait, we need to drill down further and put together comprehensive and detailed guidelines to follow in such cases. Not every sport is physical. Gender identity is a deeply personal and integral aspect of an individual’s identity. Transgender women are women, and their gender identity should be respected and acknowledged. Denying them the

opportunity to participate in women’s sports based solely on their assigned sex at birth denies their lived experiences and perpetuates discrimination. Embracing transgender individuals in women’s sports aligns with the principles of equality and inclusivity, allowing them to pursue their athletic aspirations alongside their cisgender counterparts. The argument that transgender women may have innate physical advantages over cisgender women is often based on assumptions rather than concrete evidence. While it is true that biological factors can influence athletic performance, the wide range of abilities within any gender group illustrates that individual variation is more significant than broad generalizations. Additionally, the existing policies and guidelines, such as hormone level regulations, aim to minimize any potential advantages and create a level playing field. Then aren’t we essentially saying this is not just about transgender women competing, this is about eliminating transgender individuals from participating and competing at all. Promoting a Culture of Acceptance instead of focusing solely on the potential challenges, it is important to foster an environment where transgender athletes can thrive and be embraced. By promoting education and awareness about transgender issues, we can cultivate empathy and understanding. Encouraging open dialogue among athletes, coaches, and sporting organizations will help dispel misconceptions and build bridges of acceptance. The inclusion of transgender individuals in women’s sports is a complex and nuanced topic. Balancing the principles of fairness, inclusivity, and respect requires thoughtful consideration and welldefined guidelines.

WELLNESS NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION SUCCESS BY FRANK CLEMENT

Here we go again. Another year, another batch of promises we make to ourselves to accomplish things in the new year. Although our intentions are good , rarely do we stick to the plan. Health and Nutrition specialist, Dr. Kent Bradley says, “Identify specific, attainable actions you want to take to improve your health and your mindset, and if you can, bring your friends and family along on that health journey.” Despite leaning into temptation at the end of the year, 68% of respondents are confident they’ll have healthy habits in the new year. And they expect it will take them an average of about 19 days to get back on track with their healthy habits, or to start new ones. With this in mind, 47% are planning to make a New Year’s resolution for 2024, up from 32% the year prior.

To help set yourself up for success now and into the new year, Bradley recommends these six attainable resolutions to help people lose holiday weight and achieve better health: BE SPECIFIC Being too general with a resolution makes it difficult to follow. Rather than saying you’ll exercise more or eat better, make your goal to work out three times a week or have a vegetable with every meal. These small, measurable and specific goals set you up for success. FIND A FRIEND A support network can be a big help on your health journey. Find a friend or group of like-minded people to support each other and keep everyone accountable. It also adds a social element that is essential for overall well-being.

THE 2024 “TOP 5” NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS ARE: * Eating healthier (68%) * Exercising more (66%) * Getting more sleep (56%)

GET MOVING Physical activity is essential in getting healthy. According to guidelines from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, adults need 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity and two days of muscle strengthening activity, each week. It may seem like a lot, but breaking up the physical activity into 30-minute sessions, five days a week, makes it more manageable.

* Focusing on self-care (54%) * Saving money (53%)

ADD PROTEIN Protein is a nutritional powerhouse that satisfies hunger and

builds lean muscle mass. Include protein-rich foods like lean meat, poultry, eggs, legumes and seeds at every meal and snack to fuel your body and satisfy hunger throughout the day. AVOID FAD DIETS It’s tempting to jump on the newest trend but remember there are no quick fixes for health. Fad diets do not address the core problems that cause people to gain weight and often eliminate foods that are actually healthy, which can result in nutritional deficiencies. GIVE YOURSELF GRACE Something is always better than nothing. If there isn’t time for a 30-minute workout, do 15. If you can’t make a home-cooked meal, order out a plant-based option. If you have an off day, don’t give up completely. Focus on forward momentum even if you’ve taken a few steps back. “Make sure you take the time to plan and prepare for the positive behavior changes you’d like to make and be kind to yourself in the process,” said Bradley.
