TRAVEL AND THE NEW “NORMAL” BY ADAM MARTINDALE

How we travel has definitely changed in the short term, this is fluid and being improved day by day and best practices are being shared by different companies. Many of the changes are for the best and will create a safer environment for everyone. I believe that some of these changes should have been in place already, some will be annoying to some and many of the changes will be accepted and the way we navigate the new “normal” in travel. HOTELS “Service” is being redefined. The new goal is to have everything be contactless, from the front desk, check-in experience to the room key, non-touch door handles, no touch remote controls (using your phone) and in-room controls for lights and heat/cooling devices also on your phone if possible. Cleanliness has almost become the new luxury, which has always been expected but now the emphasis on cleanliness and sanitizing has taken over the friendly smiles (through a mask) and personal ‘touches”. Hotels and resorts are trying their best to mesh both service and following the new protocols and most of

6 THESTANDARDPS.COM

the International hotel brands have created their own set of hygiene protocols, often in partnership with hospitals or research institutes. I worked on board cruise ships for 17 years, so seeing hand sanitizers at the entrance of restaurants and at the entry and exit of the ship was normal, now hotels are following that same protocol. Expect to be greeted by a hand sanitizer station at your next hotel check-in as well as by a bellman or valet wearing a mask and gloves to welcome you. You will see markers telling you where to stand for check-in (if you did not download the app and get your digital key ahead of time) and to be greeted at the front desk by an employee wearing a mask behind a screen who will hand you as little paper as possible and may ask you to scan a QR code for a property map and all the information you need about the hotel, including menus for room service and the restaurants on property. When you arrive at your room, you may find a welcome kit

consisting of facemasks, hand sanitizer and gloves replacing the fruit basket and chocolates! Bottled water may be available sealed in a plastic bag (to prevent anyone touching the bottle before you) and most reading material will have been removed from the room as well as additional throw pillows, extra blankets, pillows etc.… You should make a reservation for the restaurants as they will have eliminated tables for social distancing and don’t expect to find a breakfast buffet available anymore. As far as the pool, some hotels may ask you to make reservations,

others will just limit capacity and it will “first come, first served” with lifeguards walking around sanitizing the loungers after each use. You can swim in the pool and enjoy as you normally would. All these enhancements make the experience much healthier and will provide a safer environment for all to enjoy.

plane which has been fogged before boarding. Flying will be a much cleaner and healthier because of these new protocols as well as the fact that most people do not realize that, on average, cabin air is completely refreshed 20 times per hour, compared with just 12 times per hour in an office building. On most aircraft, air is also circulated through hospital-grade HEPA filters, which remove 99.97 percent of bacteria, as well as the airborne particles that viruses use for transport. Additionally, cabins are divided into separate ventilation sections about every seven rows of seats, which means that you share air only with those in your immediate environment and not with the guy who’s coughing up a lung ten rows back.

cleaned from top to bottom. Having said this the cruise lines have submitted their new protocols to the CDC and are awaiting approval to begin sailing again. Guests should expect enhanced pre-cruise health screening and ongoing screenings throughout the cruise. All guest screenings will be non-invasive, primarily involving touch-free temperature checks. Crew will be extensively screened prior to and throughout the voyage. Touchless temperature checks and monitors will be the norm. There may be on-board COVID-19 tests for staff during the cruise as well. Many cruise lines will probably use thermal cameras to take temperatures.

CRUISES I may be biased in my opinion about cruises as I worked on board cruise ships for 17 years for 4 major cruise lines as Food and Beverage Director and always maintained and was responsible for the strictest standards imposed by the CDC. Their VSP (Vessel Sanitation Program) subjects this industry to federal scrutiny that is unique within the travel and hospitality industry. There is no similar federal program for hotels, airlines or restaurants.

Medical grade H13 HEPA filters are being installed on many cruise lines. These filters remove 99.95% of airborne pathogens.

The ships crew have always regularly cleaned and sanitized handrails, door handles, faucets and other commonly touched surfaces multiple times a day. Crews attack the possibility of an outbreak in other ways, such as “strict laundry protocols” aimed at eliminating viruses and bacteria on soft surfaces such as sheets. After a cruise ends and before the next passengers arrive, ships are

8 THESTANDARDPS.COM

Ships will now be disinfected prior to every voyage in conjunction with CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program. Terminals will be sanitized continuously and fogged (when possible) before and after embarkation and debarkation. In addition, you can expect: • Extreme cleaning that might include hypochlorous acid (HOCl) fogging in staterooms and public areas – this technology uses a nontoxic, powerful oxidant that kills bacteria, spores and viruses…it’s safe to use since it’s comprised of natural elements. • 24/7 cleaning, especially in public areas and high-touch points • Buffets and beverage stations will be staffed to ensure that many hands do not transmit disease.

• Guests will be strongly encouraged to frequently wash hands – as they always have been – and hand sanitizer will be placed prominently throughout the ship. • Luggage and deliveries may be disinfected • Only authorized people and items will be allowed on board, and everything will be subject to disinfection. You can expect to experience “staggered embarkation” and online check-in to assist with social distancing. While on-board, you will find that activities are still available, albeit sometimes modified to allow for social distancing…tis may mean reduced numbers of guests in performances and in given areas. There will be limited capacities in common areas such as gyms, theaters and restaurants Touchless systems will be in place such as a “band” on Virgin or a “Medallion” on Princess for keyless entry to your room and also for contactless payments. The ships’ onboard medical centers will be fully equipped with the latest testing kits and medical supplies, and medical teams are being expanded. Additionally, each ship will have dedicated isolation areas for infected guests and staff if needed. The medical facilities and staff will be increased on board. Staterooms will be kept empty for isolation purposes, if needed.

Medical staff will review documentation received prior to embarkation, medical evaluations at the time of embarkation and ongoing surveillance during the cruise. Ships will only visit safe ports of call, which means that itineraries are subject to change in case of outbreaks or other issues. Cruise lines will work closely with partners on shore - such as excursion providers - to ensure that health and sanitation protocols are extended to land experiences. AT THE END OF THE DAY Travel will continue, in different ways but will evolve into a safer and healthier environment for all to enjoy. “Service” will include the highest hygiene standards and this will be very important when making your travel decisions. The age and health of the individual traveler will play a big role in factoring where and how travel is planned. The protocols that the travel industries are putting into place emphasize safety above all. I’m very confident that travel will continue to increase and it will be safer than ever to take plan your vacation with friends and family on land or back on the high seas where every effort will be made to make your vacation as worryfree and enjoyable as possible. TSA MAKES CHANGES TO TRAVELER’S AIRPORT EXPERIENCE From check-in and security to boarding, and even while in flight expect changes to come with your next trip. “I think the most important thing is to familiarize yourself with the new policies, so you know what to expect when you get to the airport,” said Zach Wichter, aviation industry reporter for The Points Guy.

One of the major changes in the security screening process is that travelers will now scan their own paper or electronic boarding pass, instead of handing it to a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officer. After scanning, travelers will show the officer their boarding pass for a visual inspection. Masks are allowed to be worn during the screening process, but passengers may be asked to adjust the mask to verify their identity. TSA is also enforcing rules about food. “You will be asked to remove your food from your carry-on bag and put it in a bin,” said Lisa Farbstein, a spokesperson for TSA. “With that said, to reduce touch points, we recommend placing food into a clear bag at home. Put that clear bag of food into your carry-on bag. Then, at the checkpoint, put the clear bag into the bin. Otherwise, your food will touch the bin. You don’t have to put your food in a clear bag, but it’s the smart way to do it.” For liquids, a single hand sanitizer bottle (up to 12 ounces) per person is allowed in carry-on bags. The bottle must be taken out of the bag to be screened separately. However, advisors should be sure to remind clients not to bring prohibited items, such as other liquids greater than 3.4 ounces, and to follow rules about removing items from carry-on bags during screening.

Otherwise, they still may be asked to go back outside security to dispose of things such as water bottles, or to take out items (including laptops) to be put through the scanner again. In order to reduce touchpoints, TSA is also advising travelers to store items including belts, wallets, keys and phones in carry-on bags. This prevents the requirement of placing loose items in bins. Social distancing will also be enforced with visual markers and staggered lanes. Other steps TSA has taken to help stop the spread of the virus include the use of face protection by all TSA officers. Travelers are also encouraged to wear masks; however, they are not required to do so.

In airports, travelers can also expect to see more routine cleaning and disinfection of popular touchpoints in the security screening areas, as well as newly installed plastic shielding in many locations. “I think the most important thing will be whether or not TSA rigorously enforces social distancing while passengers are waiting to go through the checkpoint,” The Points Guy’s Wichter said. “We know that proximity is a big factor in the spread of COVID-19, so it will be important to make sure people are able to stay apart in places where lines used to be pretty condensed.” While travelers should become familiar with the abovementioned changes, the overall security experience will not be very different. “I don’t think these policies will have a major effect on most travelers,” Wichter said. “For now, these minor tweaks coupled with low passenger volumes should mean that security is very similar to how it was pre-COVID.”

12 THESTANDARDPS.COM

However, Wichter says travelers should expect to see a healthscreening component in the future. “Most, if not all, of the experts I’ve spoken to believe there will be some mandatory health screening in the future for all travelers,” he said. “Exactly what that looks like — and what will be effective — remains an open question for now. In the short term, it could be temperature or COVID-19 checks at airports. But it seems likely to evolve into some kind of proof of immunity or immunization for travel in the future.” No decision has been made on temperature checks at this time, says TSA’s Farbstein. However, individual airlines such as Frontier Airlines have started to implement health screenings, and most airlines are now requiring employees and passengers to wear facial coverings from check-in to deplaning. SUMMER VACATION: WHAT ARE THE RISKS?

In this new normal where everything is a calculation, summer vacation presents a whole host of questions. While there are few activities that are risk-free, thinking scenarios through goes a long way toward making summer travel plans that sound reasonably safe -- and fun. HERE ARE SOME OF THE BIG QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER: Q: Can I drive to another state? Like most things coronavirus-related, it’s complicated. While many US states have started to lift their most stringent Covid-19 lockdown measures, many are wary of out-of-state visitors. Some have imposed mandatory or suggested 14-day quarantines for those coming from out of state. Restrictions may apply to all out-of-

16 THESTANDARDPS.COM

state visitors or to arrivals from specific areas hard-hit by outbreaks. Travelers should research state and local government policies in places where they might stay overnight. And is Covid-19 spreading widely in your area or where you’re going? The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends factoring this into your decision, as well as whether you can properly social distance at your destination and whether you or someone you live with is more likely to get very ill with Covid-19. Q: Is staying in a hotel safe? Just as in other places, the greatest risk of transmission in hotels is likely in situations where you’re in close contact with other people,

said Dr. Henry Wu, director of the Emory Travel Well Center in Atlanta, via email. Social distancing and wearing masks in places such as elevators and lobbies can reduce those risks. Contaminated surfaces seem to pose a lesser risk, but you’ll still want to check into a hotel’s sanitation procedures, Wu said. Many large chains have outlined the specifics of their enhanced cleaning protocols online. To be extra safe, “wiping down high-touch surfaces in the room (door knobs, faucets, light switches etc.) Upon arrival with a disinfectant wipe or alcohol is a good idea,” he said. In most situations, the novel coronavirus is unlikely to survive on surfaces more than a few days. “For that reason, I would request a room that has been vacant for as long as possible -- ideally several days or more.” Q: What about Airbnb stays? While rental properties “might involve less contact with others, there might be significant variation in adherence to good cleaning procedures,” Wu said. Airbnb has provided cleaning and sanitation guidance to hosts and plans to provide hosts with step-by-step cleaning protocols in the near future in partnership with experts such Dr. Vivek Murthy, former US Surgeon General. Bringing along your own supplies to sanitize high-touch areas and renting a place that has been vacant for a few days are both smart ideas. Q: Is renting a car OK? Car rental companies, like major hotel brands, have adopted enhanced cleaning procedures, but sanitizing frequently touched surfaces -- door handles, turn signal, steering wheel -- is still good

practice. “Similar to the hotel advice, the car that has been unused the longest is probably the one least likely to have infectious virus in it -- even better if it has been parked under the sun in a hot parking lot,” Wu said. Q: Which is safer, flying or driving? There’s no easy answer here. It really depends, and Wu reminds people not to forget the very real risk of car accidents. If you’re considering risks based on Covid-19 alone, there are still many factors to consider. “While air travel introduces much uncertainty (e.g. How full will the plane be? Will someone sick be sitting near you?), airports and airlines have implemented many precautions,” Wu wrote. “Furthermore if the flight is short, then the duration of risk exposure could be limited.” Driving your own car is a well-controlled environment, but each stop introduces some risk. Wu advises travelers to pack as much food and drink as possible and try to stop only in places where distancing is not difficult. Wear a mask when others are around and keep your distance, frequently wash or sanitize your hands and be careful not to touch your face. Sharing the vehicle with people who aren’t among your close contacts adds risk, especially if the trip is long, Wu noted. “If this is not avoidable, I would advise all occupants wear face coverings.” Q: Can I go to the beach? “If a park, beach, or recreational facility is open for public use, visiting is okay as long as you practice social distancing and everyday steps such as washing hands often and covering coughs

JULY 2020 17

COVER and sneezes,” the CDC advises. And swimming is OK, with the same caution to social distance. There’s no evidence that Covid-19 spreads to humans through water, the CDC says. Q: What about camping? Camping in an area where you’re close to other campers or where shared facilities such as restrooms are involved pose the same sorts of risks as many other scenarios. The same precautions apply: social distancing, disinfecting surfaces, washing hands, wearing masks. Remote areas with limited access to medical care also pose a risk, especially for people who might be more likely to become very ill with Covid-19. While many state and national parks have gradually reopened, some facilities are still limited. Find out what’s offered and what’s not and plan to bring all the supplies you’ll need to adapt. Don’t choose the most popular park in your area, and find another spot if the trail or campground you’re eying is crowded. Q: What about visiting an amusement park? “This is a tough one,” Wu said. Amusement parks “have some inherent issues that might increase

18 THESTANDARDPS.COM

risk: Crowded areas mixing many individuals from different areas, frequently touched surfaces (e.g. handlebars or seat belts on ride), and many younger adults and children that might be more likely to have mild or asymptomatic illness,” he said. While most parks are still closed, there are plans to reopen. Disney World is set to start welcoming guests again in July with a host of new touch less features and social distancing protocols. Q: Are indoor attractions such as museums safe? Indoor settings are riskier than outdoor settings for coronavirus transmission. And crowded indoor settings are worse. “However, if the establishment was careful about limiting the number of guests and maintaining distancing between them, this would reduce the risk,” Wu said. There’s no one-size-fits all guide to summer vacation, especially in the age of coronavirus. But thinking through each scenario can help create a safer version of your very much-needed break. As noted please check with the location you are planning to visit to see what COVID 19 protocols the may have in place. Thanks CNN for this article

BOOK REVIEW

ALWAYS OVERBOOKED BY TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER

Can you name them in chronological order? The first one might be hard: you were small when you loved that dog. Later ones recall easier and, naturally, you remember the first pup that was all yours. Think: the names come one after another because there was always a dog and in “Good Boy: My Life in Seven Dogs” by Jennifer Finney Boylan, there was always love. Like any other history, your life can be separated into “B.C.” and “A.D.” That’s before canine and after dog or, as Boylan says, “My days have been numbered in dogs.” For her, before James Boylan became Jennifer, there was a Dalmatian named Playboy, a “troublesome hoodlum” and escape artist who seemed mostly to ignore Boylan. Playboy showed that it’s possible to love someone, despite their faults. On James’s eleventh birthday, Penny entered the family. She was also a Dalmatian, and an overeater who grew sausage-like, drooly, and messy, but Boylan adored that chubby dog until childhood things were put aside, and Penny resignedly went with them. There was Matt the Mutt, an out-of-control mongrel who taught Boylan that “sometimes the happiest people are the ones that cause the most pain to everyone around them.” An “adorable brown fluff ball” named Brown showed that scars can be healed “if you know love.” Alex was not Boylan’s dog at first, and he almost never was; the Gordon Setter’s heart had always belonged to Boylan’s best friend, Zero – although Alex was there when Boylan fell in love, and again when James Boylan revealed that he was transitioning to fully be Jenny. Then there was Lucy, who disliked everyone; and Ranger, the last “family” dog. “When I was young,” says Boylan, “I was haunted by the person I imagined I could never be.” The surprise was that the boy and the man she was “still live within my heart, along with every last dog that ever helped them on their way.” Not to quibble, but “Good Boy” is not just about a good boy. It’s also about a couple of bad boys, a few good girls, a host of hilarious family stories, and author Jennifer Finney Boylan’s life, told without any dark corners of insincerity. So it’s not about a single “Good Boy.” S’okay, we’re good. You won’t even mind that you sometimes forget dogs are supposed to be the reason for this book but that they’re hijacked by Boylan’s most delightful memories, many of which are so evocative and universal, they feel as though they were pulled out of some kind

of Late Baby Boomer Handbook. You might not even notice that dogs are just half this book, the other half being a funny, awkward hike toward insight, love, and love of. This is the sort of book that you want to last just a few more pages. It’s trite to say that you’ll laugh, you’ll cry – but you will. It’s one to read with a furry baby lying on your feet. For right now, “Good Boy” is good to order. “Good Boy: My Life in Seven Dogs, A Memoir” by Jennifer Finney Boylan c.2020, Celadon Books $26.99 / $36.50 Canada 272 pages

A PERSONAL SILVER LINING BY LEE LYNCH

I thought there could be no good news. Not in the midst of a pandemic and the mass selfishness that hastens and continues its spread. Not when the abiding depth of U.S. racism bubbles to the surface without shame or remedy. Not when the vainglorious puppet of the far right “that struts and frets his hour upon the stage” continues to assault everything we’ve done right as a country and tout as successful every evil we continue to perpetrate. Even as this circus of horrors rolls on, I have been able to privately celebrate two personal milestones. I have broken my record for a long-term relationship. Only by a week so far, but what a relief to get beyond the jinxed anniversaries of my past. My sweetheart and I have started our fourteenth year together and we’re okay. Really okay. Earlier this year I hurtled over a second pitfall: I now have lived in the same home for over seven years. At age eighteen I was privileged enough to leave my parents’ apartment and attend college. In the span of the next fifty years, I moved twenty-three more times. Not a world-shattering amount, but enough to necessitate recreating home, and sometimes my life, far too often. A number of the moves came as a result of break-ups, or of trying to make a relationship work. It’s true that I want to change the world, but there is much to be said for stability. I was always performing at top speed, always devising ways to use time more efficiently, keeping sleep to a minimum. Only now am I beginning to learn to do one thing at a time—multi-tasking was normal and necessary. My pace was an attempt to make up for the hours and energy I too frequently lost to moving out, moving in, breaking up, starting again. Short-term relationships seemed to be the norm in lesbian life at the time. It would be decades before I met women who had been together since high school or college or since coming out. The first such couple I met said the secret to their success was simply, “Be kind and love each other.” I had already foresworn leaving relationships and I taught myself to do as the couple advised. But it wasn’t always up to me to pull the plug. So I moved, and moved, and moved on.

My heart longs for solutions to the various wrongheaded conflicts tearing our world apart. Who am I kidding? These frictions have always been our inheritance. Racism is not new, nor is income inequality or incompetent, power hungry leadership. All are plagues, as malignant as the current viral scourge. I see our single friends suffering from lack of companionship, touch, and safety, to evade this illness. African Americans, Native Americans, and gays, among others in the U.S., have never been guaranteed safety at all. Neither have my sweetheart and I, but we, at least, have respite in each other. More than ever, I am grateful to have at long last found unwavering love and a home where it can thrive. While constancy won’t slow the rise of fascism, or appease alt-right activists, or allow us to go without masks, we are stronger for it, and strength is what is needed to repel the advance of the recurring infamies we now— and perhaps always—face.

THE STAYCATION: THE SUMMER OF OUR SELF-CONTENTMENT BY DANN FOLEY

To say that 2020 has thus far been out of the ordinary would be the understatement of all time. Our lives have changed and continue to change in ways we have yet to understand. Any thoughts of a summer vacation have been placed on the back burner making way for thoughts about simply staying home and staying safe. But, just because we won’t be able to travel does not mean we have to sit at home staring at the four walls. My normal summer travel always included a trip to Europe to unwind, rejuvenate and be inspired. I come home with literally thousands of photographs of anything and everything that catches my design eye. The imagery I bring home influences and inspires my work all year long. In the past when I have had to forgo my usual jaunt I found myself feeling burned out by October. I have thought of my summer travels as a necessary part of business and of a well lived life. I refuse to let this summer be anything less than a fabulous STAY-CATION. Think of it for a minute. You might have a vacation club account at your bank or maybe you already put away some money toward

a get-a-way this summer. So now you have some funds that you can use on yourself and your home. Take that time off; we have all certainly earned it this year. I intend to use my time and the few dollars I have been able to gather to freshen and enliven my home. We have all just spent months on end inside and during that time it seems we have all learned how to cook. I spent many a day and night trying recipes and baking up a storm. I took to leaving my efforts on my neighbor’s door steps so that I wouldn’t inhale it all and end up so large that no one would recognize me when we finally emerged from our self-quarantine. Truth be told, I really enjoy making comfort food healthy and I kept up my exercise routine every morning on zoom. Indulgence was an important part of selfcare in the worst days of shelter at home. Now that the baking is finished, it’s time to get to more than just cleaning out our closets. I know what I want to accomplish with my staycation makeover and I thought I might share with you some of my ideas and inspirations in the hopes that they might make you

feel better about staying close to home this summer. I want to make my time at home as fulfilling and satisfying as travel normally would during the summer months. First things first. Think about being at home as an opportunity to improve the way you live. I had to accept the fact that I won’t be seeing Paris, Rome or Capri this summer and that was tuff. This summer I have a new focus and that focus is about the way I live in my home. I am actually excited to get started! The planning component is not unlike planning a trip. I daydream about what I want, I make lists and then I get serious about what I can accomplish based on my time and budget. Here is what I have come up with: I have decided after months of being at home that I need more color in my daily life. I love neutrals and like the background they create for everything else. But, my perspective has definitely changed and I am now sampling colors for just about every room of the house. I even intend to do some of the work myself! Here are some tips for tackling painting on your own. • When selecting color from those paint store chips, find what you like then go down a few shades on the chip. Once you get the color on the wall, most appear lighter so you want go deeper. • Don’t be afraid! Remember, it’s only paint and that is the easiest thing to change. Be bold! Tell everyone who you are with your palette. • Preparation is key to anything successful. Cleaning, filling holes and crack, and taping corners and edges goes a long way when faced with spills and touch-ups. • The quality of your tools is everything. Buy the best rollers and brushes you can afford. It will make all the difference when you actually start painting. • Try the look out. If you are unsure about your ultimate choice or you just don’t want to paint an entire room, choose an accent wall, or two. This little trick can make its own fabulous statement no matter your style. I am also focusing in on some new carpeting. In trying to make it look its best and stay within my budget, I have done a bit of specialized resourcing that I can share with you. • Avoid the big box home improvement stores when trying to find the best price on the best carpet. Try the smaller private carpet stores. You will not only find the best price and better service but, every small business today needs the help after months of lost revenues. You will get the added pleasure of helping your local business owners. • Smaller carpet shops often have a “back room” where you can find remnants and private sale items at special purchase prices.

• Keep in mind that the luxuriousness and the longevity of your installed carpet depends on the quality of the padding. Buy the best padding you can afford; it will make all the difference in your home for today and long into the life of your carpet. • If your budget allows, splurge on all-natural wool carpeting. Believe it not, it will be the best wearing, longest lasting carpet you ever had and it will be easy to clean. Even those awful spills that require a professional will come out. • Speaking of spills; one thing I tell all my clients is, when you have a serious spill, DON’T try to clean it yourself and DON’T use any of the spray cleaners on the shelf at your market. Call in a professional! They will know how to treat your stain. I have seen too many carpets ruined by good intentioned homeowners. In the end you have a bigger problem because the off-the- shelf spray product can often set the stain and now it’s there for good. Simply blot and irrigate the stain with some water (unless it is all wool) and wait for the professionals to arrive. Paint and carpet can transform any room in your home. You can give any room a new perspective and your space new life. It can enliven and soothe your soul... just like taking a vacation. I am going to take that time off, I am going to enjoy finding new ways to enjoy by home by exploring the possibilities that will enhance my daily life and not break my bank. Do some soul searching. Be bold, be choosy and most off all choose what you love. Happy Summer everyone! 2020… PART TWO BY JILL LANGHAM

Hello and welcome to the second half of this most memorable year of 2020. Who could have predicted that we would all be home bound during our summer vacation? I mean this isn’t the 60’s, or is it? We’ve had a Pride-less, Pride Month and are now headed for a travel-less summer. It’s both surreal and unreal. I’ve been traveling almost every summer for the last 7 years beginning with my trip to Spain in the summer of 2013, where I was to walk the Pilgrimage from Saint Jean de Pied du Port, France to Santiago de Compostela, Spain. As that trip was physically challenging, I never frequented many gyms aboard until I started attending circuit parties with a group of wonderful gay men who really took care of themselves. We attended gyms together, preparing ourselves for 12-hour dance parties. It was only then that I noticed a huge difference between American Gyms & European or Western Asian gyms. Upon entering a foreign gym the first thing you are asked is if you have a towel. If you do not have one (which I never did) you are asked to buy one from them or they suggested going back to where you staying to fetch one.

32 THESTANDARDPS.COM

I bring this to your attention now in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic because our gyms here in the desert have recently reopened and it’s been amazing to see what practices have or have not been put in place to reduce the risk of spreading disease unnecessarily. It’s now mandatory to wear masks at all times in businesses for the purpose of protecting others around us. I imagined the same thing would be true about using towels at the gym as well as using alcohol or bleach-based cleaning product to wipe down the equipment, but it just ain’t so! There is not a precedent outside of the CDC suggestions that got me to thinking about why that might be. It seems to me that here in America, we are too afraid to set up rules that really look out for the health of our nation & it’s people. Many of the countries I visit make it simple, follow the rules or don’t play. Most of the gyms there are new and the equipment has cleaning products on each & every machine. This allows every machine to be cleaned after each use. By using the towel on the machine it also cuts down on transmission of staph and MRSA.

But here in America there is not an established protocol and evidently we are too afraid to create rules and/or enforce them. Why is it the responsibility of the gym owner to provide cleaners to clean a piece of machinery that “we”, the user got dirty? The expectation should be that the gym has a daily deep cleaning but the users should be cleaning their equipment after each use. However, if that user has not done a thorough job then the current user should clean the machine both before and after each use. Perhaps we could totally eradicate things like staph and MRSA! How nice would that be? If wearing a mask is required so should carrying a towel and cleaning your machine. I think we need to get over the idea that we are above cleaning up after ourselves and realize that the world as we knew it has changed forever. We need to stop thinking only about ourselves and take pride in looking out for our fellow man. It that attitude is beyond you, then by all means find a private gym that will cater to your every need.

held accountable for the lax behaviors we have all adopted over the last 75 years, the end of WWII. Years ago, Dan Webster was quoted saying something like this, “Clean up your own backyard before you tell other people they aren’t doing it right.” I believe that we as a nation could greatly benefit from that sentiment. It is time to clean ourselves up, one machine at a time and to respectively use peer pressure to make sure that we truly are looking out for one another. Perhaps we could gently remind one another to clean their machine after each use, as well as to wear a mask and wash their hands. The 6” rule in the gym is much more difficult but we can at least be respectful of the rule. It will take time but we can do it. Grocery stores announce every hour, “It’s the top of the hour employees, please take a moment to wash your hands and clean up your area.” I’d love to hear that announcement in the gym.

Your “Cleaning” Queen, Personally, I think it is just a matter of time before we will back to sheltering in place. I think that we are being tested and are being

PERSPECTIVE

“I CAN BREATHE!” BY DR. STEPHAN SCOGGINS

I look forward to when the world can collectively say, “I can breathe!” However, in the meantime, as an emergency room nurse and college professor, I would like to invite you to join me for an emergency triage. As an academician, I find that it is ALWAYS best to start with definitions to establish a foundation everyone is clear on what it being said. First and foremost, emergency is defined as a serious and often dangerous situation requiring immediate action. We should ALL be able to agree that by the mere definition this country is in a state of emergency and immediate action is necessary. Triage is defined as to assign the degree of urgency. It is universally practiced in the nursing process that when assessing patients start with the ABCs; airway, breathing, and circulation, thereby establishing airway as the greatest of urgency. The murder of George Floyd occluded the airway of people around the world. It isn’t just blacks gasping for air it is people of all colors, races and religions, who are traumatized by the public execution. Even with my 40+ years experience, I cried as I watched the color leave his lips. When triaging someone it is imperative that once we identify the problem we then have to identify the cause. In this world case, the cause is systemic racism with more layers than an onion, yet has the same unmistakable, instantly recognizable stench that brings tears to our eyes. Sadly, for the FIRST time people are admitting that they were so accustomed to observing racist behavior that they didn’t know how to respond and certainly discuss it. Fortunately,

34 THESTANDARDPS.COM

those discussions are now occurring. It is a waste of time addressing what SHOULD HAVE happened, it is now paramount to address what SHOULD happen. Personally, I hope we don’t get so side tracked by the officers’ prosecution that we lose sight of fixing the cause of this emergency situation. Our knees need to be on the neck of systemic racism and should stay there until it can’t breathe! In the nursing process, once we identify the cause of a problem, we have to evaluate our interventions to determine what worked and what didn’t work to avoid a reoccurrence of the presenting complaint. Truer words were never better applicable to this world crisis. We have to evaluate and take ownership of things we shoulda-woulda-coulda and CAN do to prevent this 400+ year tragedy from EVER reoccurring. To begin with, systemic racism was in existence long before Donald J, so while he would probably like to take credit for 400+ years of racism, that too would not successfully clear the “fact checker”. Having said that everyone needs to become more involved in our political processes. We need to know our local council people. Who are they? What topics do they represent? Do they eat pineapples on their pizza? Additionally, we need to attend council meetings and be familiar with ALL elected officials from the Sheriff, State Representatives and many other positions long before the president. The most successful discovery of an evaluation is that we get to remove emotions and focus completely on objectivity resulting in a concrete PLAN. Which brings me to the last part of our triage, discharge planning.

What do we want to happen? What changes do we want? What would satisfy our hunger? Do we have any SPECIFIC needs? Is it healthcare? Education? Housing? These should not be questions that are immediately and effortlessly answered. Your assignment, should you choose to accept it (smile), is to give some REAL thought and respond to: “I will be able to say, “I can breathe, when…” There is a catch. In nursing, in order to set a realistic goal it needs to be measurable. For instance, if someone has an occluded airway the FIRST goal is to get someone’s damn knee off of their neck, THEN we can identify some other measurable goals. Where we go wrong is that we throw the net too wide and make emotional statements like, “I don’t know what needs to happen but I know I better get my 40 acres and a mule.” Well if you got your 40 acres and a mule what would you do with them? My point is, let’s not sit by and WAIT for others to tell us what we want. Let’s provide some input to at least HELP formulate some ideas. None of us can or should attempt this task alone, however, together I am idealistic enough to believe that we can make some shit happen. (smile)

Q&A

FLIGHT ATTENDANT BY DAY, SUPERSTAR DJ BY NIGHT BY JEREMY TROMBINO

Before the pandemic, Nick Stracener was spending a lot of time traveling the world, both with his day job as an international flight attendant and with his night gig as a world-class club DJ. Then COVID struck and he was grounded on both fronts. He’s managed to keep himself busy, producing hit dance tracks including the new remix of Lindsay Lohan’s “Back to Me” that was recently heralded by the Hollywood actress. Plus, Nick’s been managing his large social media following that currently boasts over 200,000 followers on Instagram. But what he really wants is to get back in the air. We spoke with Nick from his Dallas home. What is it that you love most about traveling the world? When I first became a flight attendant, I was not the most openminded person. Since I’ve started traveling the world, I feel like I have seen it all or heard it all and nothing is weird or strange to me. Traveling has helped me become more open-minded and see things from perspectives other than my own. What is your number one travel destination? My number one travel destination would have to be Maui. It is a beautiful place and it’s not overcrowded like Honolulu. I like some peace and quiet every once in a while. Now, if we are talking about the best city to go and party, I would have to say Miami! Let’s talk partying. How did the DJing and producing start for you? I knew it was something that I had wanted to try for a long time but never had the courage to do it until last fall. I ordered a mixer and taught myself by watching YouTube videos and online lessons. I put my first couple of mixes on Soundcloud and then a little while after that the DILF Party reached out to me and I opened a show for Kitty Glitter. They then booked me for two more shows, including one in Atlanta that I headlined. Do you get musically inspired while working 30,000 feet in the air?

36 THESTANDARDPS.COM

Oh, absolutely! When it happens, I’ll either jot it down on a piece of paper (yeah, I’m old school) or I’ll sing it into my voice notes on my phone. I do it immediately otherwise I totally forget. Who is your biggest inspiration? As far as DJ’s, I have a lot of respect for anyone who stays humble and true to themselves. I don’t appreciate cocky or arrogant people. What is one track that never gets old for you no matter how many times you hear it? This may sound lame but, “My Heart Will Go On” by Celine Dion or just about any of her songs.

What is one track that got popular that you can’t stand?

You’re single now! Are you still licking wounds or are you hot on the market this summer?

Justin Bieber’s “Yummy.” Are you willing to share one or two of your secret tricks? If you’re a DJ starting out, don’t use the sync feature. Learn to beat match, which means finding the beat by ear to match the songs. What is one mistake you see a lot of up and coming DJs/ producers making?

I’m taking time to work on myself and what makes me happy again. I’m not saying I’m opposed to a date if the right guy comes along, but my focus is on myself. It reminds me of your remix for “Boss Bitch.” Does that track describe who you are this summer? (Laughing) I guess it kind of does. I originally just really liked the song, but I’d say it’s fitting at the moment.

Not marketing themselves correctly. If you have good music but don’t know how to get others to hear it, then it’s going to be hard to get anywhere in the industry. My advice would be to make marketing and publicity a top priority.

Have you decided on the first club you will perform at once the clubs re-open?

If you could be eternally stuck in one year’s music scene, which would you choose?

I’m dying to find out! If you hear, let me know! (Laughing) I remind people and my listeners that if they want to see me at a local club, reach out to the promoters/owners or whoever books talent and let them know that you want to see me. I cannot wait to be back in the DJ booth!

The year 2000 when Britney Spears released “Oops…I Did It Again.” I was ten years old. I think it when this album came out that I started to realize I was different. I also love her song “Lucky”.

LGBTQ COUNTRY ARTIST DRAKE JENSEN RELEASES “BURN THE FLOOR” BY RYAN TURRIN

Out Canadian country artist Drake Jensen has released his brand new single “Burn The Floor,” a track that is at the forefront of LGBTQ country music innovation. Listen to the track HERE. “Burn The Floor” is accompanied by the inclusive music video that recognizes both the diversity and the togetherness of the LGBTQ community by featuring a wide-ranging spectrum of community members all celebrating as one. Watch the music video HERE. “Burn The Floor” is a modern country tune born out of the collaboration between Drake and Jon Hemingway, the Nova Scotiabased LBGTQ singer/songwriter/producer, and Rob Preuss, former keyboardist of The Spoons and Honeymoon Suite as well as the former Associate Musical Director for Mamma Mia on Broadway. Of the “Burn The Floor” Drake says: “There has been a lot of divisiveness within our community as we tend to sub-categorize each other. My answer to this was to create a song that would be completely inclusive and then invite the gay community of Canada’s capitol to film the video. The result was an outburst of fun with so many different members of our community, all of who help make up our beautiful rainbow, where we all party the night away together as one.” A review from Robert K. Oermann in Nashville’s Music Row Magazine (“Unmistakably country, but with a certain sonic majesty … he sings with open throated confidence and clear conviction. A winner.”) was the beginning for Drake Jensen’s career as not only a country music artist but also a leader in the LGBTQ community. With the launch of his first album in 2011, titled On My To Finding You, which included his first video featuring an LGBTQ love theme, Drake caught the attention of blogger Andy Towle of Towleroad.com, who named one him of the “50 Most Powerful Comings Out of 2012.” Since then, using his music and growing fame as a launching pad, he released three more studio albums: OUTlaw in 2013, Retro in 2014 and Sideshow in 2018. Some of the more notable releases

include “Scars,” the anti-bullying single in June 2013 launched at Nashville’s Hard Rock Café during Nashville Pride, and “Wherever Love Takes Us,” which charted on the Australian Country Top 40 in December 2016 and was turned into the line dance “Waves of Love” by renowned Irish choreographer Gary O’Reilly. This notoriety earned Drake Jensen recognition for his contribution to the LGBTQ community, including a notable amount of space in the country section of the book “David Bowie Made Me Gay: 100 Years of LGBTQ Music” by Darryl W Bullock. He was invited to perform at the book’s official launch in London in September 2017, as well as to participate in a discussion panel with other notable guests during the event.

The

CENTER

Mission

Creating vibrant community by helping LGBTQ people along their way. But the music is only one part of the artist’s work. Part of his artistry is in his videos where he demonstrates a keen and evolving sense of style and imagery. As an activist, he has raised awareness to the anti-bullying movement, and held very successful fundraisers for various causes. One of Drake’s missions is to collaborate with and help promote other LGBTQ artists, namely fellow Canadian artist Patrick Masse, with whom he recorded “Go Your Own Way” in 2017.

Vision

Thriving lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, living authentically in supportive, inclusive communities.

Born in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada, Drake Jensen is a unique figure in the world of country music: a voice for the LGBTQ community who speaks through his music. Gaining fans who are rediscovering the genre and can now feel included in it, he touches the heart and soul of listeners through his rich, warm voice that tells not only the stories, but conveys deep, sincere emotions. Drake Jensen remains to be a driving force, and a man on a mission, to bridge the gap between the LGBTQ community and country music.
