INDESIGN

VIRTUAL SHOPPING BY DANN FOLEY What a year, right!? I am normally very excited for the holiday season to arrive. Weeks and weeks of planning, shopping, decorating and preparing my annual Christmas Eve party. What a difference a year can make. But, just because Covid-19 is keeping you and your loved ones apart, it doesn’t mean that Christmas is cancelled. Maybe, this year it really will be about the thought. Make it more about quality than quantity. This year’s Holiday Shopping Guide is the most socially distant friendly shopping experience the season has to offer. This year I am going to decorate every corner of my home, as I always do. In fact, I just may go a bit further, add a few more lights, another strand of garland, one more wreath. We need Christmas more than ever this year! Instead of lamenting the terrible year, let’s try celebrating the season and anticipating the new year. Live it up! I for one will be doing almost all of my shopping online for the very first time. In preparation I have been doing some reconnaissance to get myself ready for the Virtual Black Friday to come. I have also reached out to some of my favorite local boutiques to see what plans they have made for those gifts I just cannot get online…and of course, I am going to share it all with you. Let’s start with my online favorites. Some of these companies you will know, others may be new finds. Either way they are all worth a peruse to find some of the most beautiful and unique gifts you might ever have found if not online. www.AMAZON.com I know, it’s an easy one, a throw away on any virtual shopping list but, did you know that Amazon actually categorizes your Christmas shopping for you? Your shopping couldn’t be easier. You will find links to every category of gift giving you can think. No empty and over loaded searches. Choose the link to fashion for women, men, kids. Or try beauty. Try Stocking Stuffers or, how about Holiday Deals? You know everyone on your list will want some electronics, click the section, then filter your particular category. Every category of gift is just a click away. They make searching for the perfect gift as easy as a click. And, feel free to shop early, most everything on the site is returnable thru January 2021. www.QVC.com Bet that is one you never thought I would mention! The QVC website is like a department store. It’s full of everything you could want and to give. If you have an interest in buying or

26 THESTANDARDPS.COM

to make a little extra cash this season to spend on gifts, you can have one of their professional consultants give a virtual review and pricing for your offerings. They will evaluate everything and send you pre-paid shipping labels. I can say from personal experience their consultants are knowledgeable and delightful. When you sell items on their site you not only get your check quickly but, you earn discount rewards to use on the site for yourself or more gifts. What could be more meaningful for your community and your neighbors than to support small businesses which have been the hardest during the virus. You can have the joy of giving and the satisfaction of knowing you are helping your local businesses. Your purchase, no matter the size can actually help them to survive into the new year and offer them and their families the hope they so badly deserve. With that in mind here are just a few of the boutiques I will be shopping with by appointment, private showings and even home delivery. Wil Styles, Palm Springs. Located at 875 N. Palm Canyon drive in Palm Springs, design district, they have become the go-to place for specialty brands, emerging designers. Their contemporary fashion offerings run from casual to evening and they cater to both women and men. They also happen to have one of the best designer sun glass offerings anywhere in the desert! Will Styles is open by appointment right now and through the holiday season. I have been shopping with them for years, taking friends in and buying gifts for everyone on my gift list all year long. Give them a call (760.327.9764) and let Molly or Wil treat to a private buying experience. You may never want to go back to other way of shopping!

sending food gifts you will be amazed by the incredible selection of foods and food gifts. You will recognize many brands and you will discover new artisan gourmet companies. Many of the holiday offerings even come with gift boxes to make giving easier. I have ordered fresh cookie dough, candies of every variety, incredible crab cakes, cauliflower crust individual pizzas, breakfast croissants and more. Everything arrives quickly, unbroken and fresh. Give them a try, everyone loves a gift of comfort foods! www.therealreal.com If you are looking for the very best in top luxury designer fashion and accessories, look no further. Here’s the catch…it’s all preowned so the prices are fantastic! TheRealReal is very selective in what they take on consignment. Every item and garment are fully reviewed and authenticated before they are offered online. They only offer the top luxury goods brands so you can satisfy ever label lover on your list. And, if you are looking

Brandon Boswell Diamonds. Even staying close to home doesn’t negate a woman’s (or man’s) desire for fine jewelry. Here is your chance to shop one of the newest boutiques on El Paseo and give the kind of gift that will be remembered forever. Brandon’s beautiful brandnew boutique is intimate, sparkling and full of one of Bespoke pieces. The store is open, feel free to make an appointment or stop by. For everyone’s safety, mask and social distancing guidelines are followed. With our perfect weather, and most restaurants open during Covid-19, why not give a gift to make any foodie happy. Restaurant gift cards are available in any denomination and they can be sent electronically in some cases. These are the easiest and safest way of gift giving and celebrating the season. Some of my favorites in Palm Springs are Tac/Quila for upscale Jalisco Cuisine, and Eight4Nine. Both restaurants offer fabulous food, service and atmosphere, as well as outdoor social distance dining. Celebrate the season. Be safe, be well and Live Well.

BOOK REVIEW I

ALWAYS OVERBOOKED BY TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER That man there? He’s just a nice guy. Kind and generous, respectful and friendly, he’s a true gentleman, and he’s never judgmental. He loves children and animals, truth and honor. He’s a good sport, a good man – and in the new book “Butch Cassidy” by Charles Leerhsen, he’s a good shot, too. Eight years before the film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid was released in 1969, the last of Cassidy’s Wild Bunch “went into the ground.” Her name was Laura Bullion and, says Leerhsen, she was one of a small handful of female groupies who followed the outlaw gang, led by the man played by Paul Newman. “It was easy,” Leerhsen says “to be smitten by Cassidy...” Born Robert Parker in a tiny cabin in Beaver, Utah, Cassidy grew up uninterested in both his parents farm, and his ancestors’ Mormon religion. He was too fun-loving, too full of mischief and an appreciation for guns, horses, and gambling to settle down – and yet, unlike many Wild West scoundrels, he was well-read, kind and goodhearted which, in the hearts and minds of Old West citizens, set him apart from all the others during his life of crime. Later, though apparently not deceitfully, he began using “Cassidy” as a surname, alternating with his given name. Despite its appeal as an American legend, however, the story of Butch Cassidy and Harry “Sundance” Longabaugh might’ve merely enfolded into history, were it not for Hollywood, although Tinseltown messed with the myth. Reel men and real men were two different things and, says Leerhsen, it’s possible that Sundance wasn’t Cassidy’s best friend. Their bones may not lie in South America, and historians believe that Cassidy may have been bisexual; indeed, Cassidy’s mother commented on it. About the bank heists, train robberies, and horse thefts: Cassidy was a criminal but was Hollywood correct in portraying him as an “extraordinary human being?” “Oddly enough,” says Leerhsen, “the answer, it seems, is yes...” Thankfully, that doesn’t mean a clichéd riding-off-into-the-sunset scene inside “Butch Cassidy.” There’s no such sentimentality here; instead, you’ll find lots of delightful set-you-rights and the chance to meet a roguish scoundrel who’s hard to historically hate – a notion that many of Cassidy’s victims would have surprisingly agreed with. In explaining why that’s so, author Charles Leerhsen shows why Cassidy’s exploits loomed so large in the West but were then largely forgotten for so long. In this, readers may get the sense that the movie memorializing didn’t please Leerhsen, and that he is no fan of the general Hollywoodization of history. But that’s one small part of what’s here. The real appeal of

this book – what’s fully half the fun of it – is the sense that Leerhsen isn’t just telling this tale. He’s growling it, grizzled-like, perhaps over campfire and cowpoke stew, surrounded by rustled cattle. Absolutely, historians will want this book. For sure, L’Amour and McMurtry fans will enjoy it. As for lovers of a good tale, well, if you want something different this summer, “Butch Cassidy” will be a nice change.

RAINBOW REVOLUTION BY TOM TIETJEN

What happens when one photographer takes an empty white box and asks his subjects to present themselves the way they want to be seen? It may start a revolution… Magnus Hastings’ new coffee-table book, Rainbow Revolution is a collection of vibrant portraits that celebrate the expanding spectrum of queer identity and visibility. Inspired by the photographer’s social media campaign #GayFace — a project that quickly became a viral sensation for featuring an array of people representing all of the different colors of the LGBTQ community — Rainbow Revolution is packed with more than 300 photographs of everyday individuals and celebrities like Kathy Griffin, Boy George, Luke Evans, and fan favorites from RuPaul’s Drag Race. Accompanying Hastings’ gorgeous photos are powerful essays from some of the subjects,

30 THESTANDARDPS.COM

detailing their own personal battles in stories that are marked with sincerity and oftentimes, humor. “The essays elevate the book for me and give it a purpose beyond the social media recognition the images have gained,” says Hastings. Magnus Hastings’ “Rainbow Revolution” is available everywhere books are sold on November 24 via Chronicle Books. Magnus Hastings’ passion to depict the queer community in all its Technicolor gloriousness runs deep, and it shows in earnest from cover to cover. “The inspiration for Rainbow Revolution came from watching the world moving to a dark and right winged place,” says Hastings. “I wanted to create a project that was highly visible and unapologetically queer, and one that shouted with pride, defiance, humor, and joy because, after all, if the LGBTQ community is good

FEATURE at anything, it is laughing in the face of adversity.” The project began in the winter of 2018 when Hastings built a box in his parking garage, a 3-D blank canvas, and enlisted RuPaul’s Drag Race star Alaska Thunderfuck as his test subject. The idea was to allow Alaska to transform the space in any way she chose, so that the image represented how she wanted to be seen. Alaska nailed up some blue fabric, threw together some shapes, struck a pose and in that instant, magic was born. Over the next two years, with his camera in tow, Hastings traveled between Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, and London, building more white boxes and snapping hundreds of mini theatrical pieces that provided hundreds more subjects of varying gender and sexual identities a platform from which to tell their unique stories. Upon shooting close to 1000 boxes, Magnus felt ready to compile some of the best for his second book: Rainbow Revolution. The end result is funny, personal, political, racy and magical, a beautifully diverse celebration of queer identity and community. Inside the pages are fashion designers, medical doctors, nightlife

personalities, sports teams, finance executives, sex workers and more. “Of all the extraordinary people I have been lucky enough to photograph in one of my boxes, I think Ruby has impacted me most,” reveals Hastings. When Ruby arrived for the shoot, Magnus was introduced to a sweet, shy kid called Jacob who he had to coax into doing a headstand. Jacob’s dads then informed Magnus that Jacob would like to become Ruby, so Jacob left the box, changed into his red dress, and came back. All timidity vanished as Ruby was ready to rock! “As a child who sometimes wore dresses, I identified with Ruby,” Magnus Hastings reflects. “I was deeply moved to see Ruby’s adoring parents allowing their child to be themselves. It is really exciting that the spectrum of what is accepted and celebrated today is broadening so fast allowing people like Ruby to find their tribe and belong.” Visit: www.magnushastings.com/rainbowrevolution A portion of print sales from Rainbow Revolution will go to Magnus Hastings’ chosen charities: True Colors United in the USA and the Albert Kennedy Trust in the UK. AMAZON TRAIL

ONE DOG AT A TIME BY LEE LYNCH

I can’t save our democracy, but I can do a little good in the world. We are adopting a dog who needs a home. It’s been five years, seven months since our dog Bea died and we’re finally ready and able. I inherited her at age six. I lost her to my sweetheart soon thereafter, as those two bonded immediately. When they were together, Bea would growl to keep me away. We would not have brought another animal into the house in any case. Our cat Bolo had health problems. We, and the Vet, feared the stress might kill her. Bolo took her only pet status as her due. I lasted three weeks after she died and started looking. We brought King the cat home from our local shelter. He has learned the words “King” and “no.” We figure he’s ready too. We found our dog-to-be on line through Adopt-A-Pet. They and Petfinder offer a function to search local shelters. We looked at a number of home-seekers, but one just stuck with us both. A twoyear old stray, she’s smaller than King the Cat by three pounds and was described as loving, smart, and goofy. I can’t think of a better combination of traits in a dog. Used to be, cats and dogs found me. I’d take them home, have them checked by the vet, and that was it. The cats and dogs seemed to work it all out with very little fussing on my part. Experienced now, we have a laundry list of to-dos before we can welcome her home. Like naming her. Any suggestions?

34 THESTANDARDPS.COM

Now, with both King the Cat and the dog, there were applications to fill out for the safety of the animals, because of the evil humans do. The rescue workers really, really care. I had a long phone interview with the dog’s shelter administrator. Another volunteer did a virtual house and yard tour with Google Duo. I just finished the last hurdle, talking at length to the foster mom who is absolutely besotted with the dog. We’ll go get her in eight days. Our excitement knows no bounds, but oh, the preparations. King the Cat’s food dish has moved atop the washing machine. All his low-lying toys will be elevated. We have a schematic for gradually introducing King and the dog. We’ve fretted about King’s powerful jaws—my hands and arms are a testimony to their strength. This weekend we’ll go through Bea’s legacy of paraphernalia. Will her harness adjust to the correct size—the new gal is only eight pounds. Will she wear the coats Bea barely tolerated? Fetch the balls and frisbee Bea ignored? The biggest project is creating a small grassed yard for her use, especially in the high wind, heavy rain, coastal nights when walking up the block and across the street is simply too unpleasant for woman or beast. In her old age, Bea plain refused to go outdoors in those conditions and had to be carried and set on the ground. So, we’ll tear out the abundant spearmint I planted (the bees loved it).

Then layers of small rocks and ground cloth will be at least partially excavated, the ground leveled, and good soil added. Fifteen rolls of sod will cover the ground. We’ll likely need to rent a roller to do whatever rollers do to attach the sod and soil. The women we’ve worked with to make this all come true— at Match Made in Heaven Animal Rescue and Renee’s Foster Dogs, both in Oregon—are good, good people. All volunteers, the time and money they spend, the problems they tackle, their kindness and devotion to the animals dwarfs the current sour mess of the world at large. They’re the kind of people who should be running the U.S. Breaking news on my computer strikes blow after blow into my heart and mind. Kidnapping a female governor because she tried to protect her state from a lethal virus? Beating a professional jazz pianist in the New York subway until he can never perform again— because he’s Asian? Voting for a madman president with no moral backbone or political expertise, who goads Americans to divisiveness and violence? In these evil times, I’ll cast my vote to grasp at what’s left of our proud democracy. I want leaders who build, not destroy, whose purpose is to serve every single citizen with honesty, respect, and courtesy. What’s giving a safe home to one small dog in the nasty scheme of things? A gesture, a bit more love than was in the world yesterday.

AND WEST HOLLYWOOD LAUNCH THE FIRST-EVER ANTI-TRANSPHOBIA CAMPAIGN BY MONA ELYAFI

As the founder of TransCanWork.org – a program promoting trans inclusivity in the workplace that both provides resources to transgender job seekers and trains the businesses that hire them – CEO Michaela Mendelsohn has leveraged her success and knowhow as a seasoned entrepreneur to help the trans community succeed and thrive in today’s ever-evolving business world. She also serves as the CEO of Pollo West Corp, one of the largest franchises for El Pollo Loco restaurants in the U.S. Western Region. Her unwavering dedication to diversity and inclusion in the workplace awarded her the 2018 Face of Diversity Award at the National Restaurant Association Public Affairs Conference. Beyond shaking things up in her industry, Mendelsohn, Drïan Juarez and the entire Trans Can Work team are changing the game too. There’s so much talk about diversity and inclusion, but Trans Can Work is actually doing something about it and challenging the status quo. Also, at the helm of the pioneering initiative is Drïan Juarez who works as a global consultant on diversity and inclusion and is the Vice President of Programing for Trans Can Work where she works to build inclusive company cultures where gender diverse people can thrive. She has served as the Global Partnerships Manager for Grindr’s Grindr for Equality program where she promoted health, justice, and equality for the global LGBTQI community. She is the founder and former Program Manager of the LA LGBT Center’s Transgender Economic Empowerment Project (TEEP).

36 THESTANDARDPS.COM

We talked to Michaela Mendelsohn and Drïan Juarez about the partnership with West Hollywood that they are kicking off this November in conjunction with Transgender Awareness Month. Can you tell us briefly what Trans Can Work is about? Michaela: Our mission at Trans Can Work is to create a national culture where gender diverse people can thrive in the workplace. We do this in two ways. We conduct diversity and inclusion trainings and consultations with employers and agencies in addition to providing workforce development for transgender and gender nonconforming community members. Our goal is to create a pipeline from employers who we have trained and certified as inclusive to great candidates from within the community who we have worked with to make them the best candidates for those positions. You have partnered with the city of West Hollywood to encourage diversity & inclusion initiatives. Tell us more about this partnership. Drïan: I am thrilled about our partnership with the City of

West Hollywood. Once again, the City is taking bold steps for the trans and gender nonconforming [TGNC] community by being the first in the country to create an Anti-Transphobia Campaign of this magnitude. Aptly so, the November program launch coincides with Transgender Awareness Month. Initiated by now former Mayor John D’Amico, this program recognizes that TGNC community members continue to have numerous barriers for inclusive workplaces. Current Mayor Lindsey P. Horvath has taken up the reins brilliantly to bring awareness to the challenges faced by TGNC employees. She wholeheartedly believes this program will increase opportunities for employment, create safe and supportive working environments, and help the businesses and employees in the City of West Hollywood understand their role in making these changes last. Two main components of this program include an Inclusive Workplace Toolkit and an eLearning training opportunity. The Toolkit brings together educational materials such as a pronoun timeline, a gender inclusive workplace tips poster, a window decal for businesses to proudly display that they are a gender-affirming company, and much more. The eLearning training is a one-hour, selfdirected course intended to provide City employees and businesses with the essential knowledge needed to help navigate workplace interactions in a manner that ensures a safe and inclusive space for gender diverse people. Creating an authentically diverse and inclusive workplace takes commitment and action from all of us. The Anti-Transphobia Campaign is a truly collaborative effort between the West Hollywood City Council, the Transgender Advisory Board, West Hollywood Business Chamber of Commerce and their member businesses, City employees, and Trans Can Work. Why do you believe this partnership matters? Drïan: This partnership is incredibly important now more than ever! When you turn on the news, all you see is the Trump administration trying to take away trans people’s access to healthcare and giving service providers the ability to discriminate against us. This partnership is like a beacon of hope nationally and serves as a model for other cities to uplift their local gender diverse communities. We have really developed a roadmap for this kind of work and our hope is that other municipalities will see that diversity and inclusion is the future and a campaign like the city of West Hollywood’s Anti-Transphobia Campaign sets a powerful diverse and inclusive foundation from which the city and it’s employers can benefit from for years to come!

What do you ultimately hope to accomplish? Drïan: For far too long, trans people have experienced unemployment at twice the national average and that can be as high as four times the national average for trans people of color. It’s time for that to change! We will know that we have accomplished our goals when we see the majority of community members in employment that not only pays them a livable wage, takes care of their transitional related care, protects them from discrimination and gives them opportunities to thrive and move up in the company. What trans people want is what every American wants, and when we are on a level playing field with our cis-gender colleagues, we will know that we have done some good in the world. What happens for Trans Can Work after the elections in both scenarios? Michaela & Drïan: Trump-There will be more work to be done to protect all of the employment protections that we have. We will work closer with our employers because their commitment to D&I will be vital. Regardless of how the Trump administration will continue to try and take away our rights and protections, it will be employers who will foster inclusive environments that are safe and empower employees to thrive as their authentic selves. Biden-A Biden administration will mean that we can expand on the protections that gender diverse people have not only in the workplace but out in the world. We are laying the foundation now for that vision. You can’t turn back the hands of time and progress and we are positioning ourselves to be there to help employers and organizations meet their D&I goals once the barrier of the Trump administration is removed. What is the one question you wish you’d been asked & why? Drïan: Why is D&I important? When we start to address D&I in the workplace we excavate the origins of sexism, misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia and racism. Trans people embody the heart and soul of intersectionality. We are not just trans people, we are trans people who are parents, who are immigrants, who are older and younger, we are a part of every community. It’s important to do this work in the workplace because without an income you don’t have a voice and the history of America is that “melting pot” where many voices come together to create new and brighter opportunities. Anything else you want to add? Michaela: We are excited to have more employers join our vision of a brighter more inclusive future, please connect with us and join the movement! FITNESS

THE GIFT OF FITNESS BY JILL LANGHAM

Hello my Weary of Politics, Friends, by the time you read this we will still be in the dark about the next 4 years wondering whether we will feel like celebrating the Holidays or not. Will it be a White (Biden) Christmas or another Orange one? Either way, gifts will be bought to celebrate the holiday of your choosing. What will you focus on? How will you honor the tradition of giving? This is a tough topic for me in good years but is especially rough given our state of mind, country and world, not to mention our own personal financial state. I’ve been amazed by our countries lack of focus on savings. We’ve heard plenty about the lack of salary, welfare, unemployment checks, the increase of online spending but very little about saving. I grew up hearing from my depression-aged parents the value of saving for a rainy day. And if you were getting married in the 70’s up to the near past, you watched many commercials from jewelry stores recommending that the “young person” have at least 6 months salary put aside for an engagement ring. This was the same 6 months that “they” also suggested we have saved in the case of an emergency. (could they have been referring to COVID?)My guess is that most people will feel like we need to stimulate the economy, but going further into debt doesn’t feel like the answer to me. I am worried that people are going to do just that as a way to “treat” themselves and others to make up for such a horrible year. But, I digress. I’d love to see people re-focus their attention on their health and their immune system. I might be exaggerating, but I very rarely hear people say they are going to treat themselves to lo-fat, good protein & carbohydrate meal. However, every January I do hear people say that they are going to start an exercise program which gym owners love as they make over 60% of their yearly income at that time. Did you know that gym owners expect only about 23% of people who buy memberships to use them consistently? Further, gym, fitness & health food market are valued at $38 billion a year! (Source: https://www.creditdonkey.com) But, because of this 2020 Pandemic we’ve been banned from going to the gym forcing us to reconsider not only our commitment to a fitness regime but also to ourselves. Some people have greatly succeeded where others have sadly failed.

38 THESTANDARDPS.COM

This could be the Holiday where all of that changes for the best. If you’ve made the commitment to yourself, you’re free to share your success with those closest to you. You might consider purchasing them equipment to support your loved ones discipline of choice. Perhaps buying a bike, new athletic shoes, a tennis racket, a pickle ball outfit, golf clubs, individual pilates lessons, personal training sessions or yoga classes, free weights, a stationary bike, or even some resistance bands are in order. You could also support someone who wants to eat well by buying them a gift card for an organic market or restaurant, paying for a year’s subscription for an App like MyFitnessPal or giving them an IOU for a healthy dinner that you will prepare. A survey done by Freeletics of 2000 Americans done this past summer showed some interesting new trends and ones I hope will be carried forward long after COVID-19 has finally been put to bed. 56% feel so confident in their home workouts that they plan to cancel their gym memberships! I believe we can find the glass half full if we look at all of the positive things that have arisen during this “once in a lifetime” event. And perhaps during the next 2 months of this 2020 Holiday Season we can remember to be more tolerant of one another and move to the next higher ground as healthier individuals. Regardless of what you decide to do, I wish all of you a very safe and healthy Thanksgiving. Yours in Love and Health, Jill, your forever Dancing Queen

REVIVALS STORES CELEBRATING 25 YEARS REINVENTING RESALE TO RAISE MILLIONS FOR DAP BY JACK BUNTING

Revivals Stores, with locations in Palm Springs, Cathedral City, and Palm Springs marks its 25th anniversary in business this month. From its beginning as one store on Vela Rd. near the Palm Springs Airport in 1995, Revivals continues to keep customers, volunteers, and donors coming back, even during this health crisis. Promotion to Thank Shoppers To celebrate more than two decades of support and excellent shopping deals, Revivals Stores is inviting everyone to “Join the Treasure Hunt” and enjoy 50% OFF on select items throughout its stores beginning November 1 and extending through the 25th. These special sale items will have a Revivals 25th Anniversary sticker on them and will be from Revivals new and resale inventory from all store departments. Known for influencing Coachella Valley resale industry by combining vintage and retail, Revivals is well known for affordability, discoverability, and its commitment to community. 100% of Revivals Stores profits (about $1 million annually) support comprehensive healthcare for the 7,000 residents of the Coachella Valley who call DAP Health their healthcare home. The resale store chain’s broad community of generous donors guarantees a steady supply of stellar resale merchandise alongside brand-new furniture and home décor. Early Safety Modifications Payed Off A major funding source for DAP Health, Revivals Stores implemented COVID safety measures over weeks of planning during the early months of the crisis. They include social distancing markers throughout the stores and some minor policy changes. To keep safety a priority, fitting rooms were closed, returns are no longer accepted, and customers now bag their own products unless it is a larger item that requires assistance. “We quickly focused on how we could provide shoppers a

safe Revivals experience,” says Dane Koch, DAP director of retail. “Acting early has led to us being able to keep our doors open today and into the future.” Volunteers Make Revivals Special The retailer is also celebrating the volunteers who make Revivals a unique shopping experience. “For twenty-five years, volunteers at Revivals have been changing the world, one hour at a time” says Marci Lerner, volunteer coordinator for Revivals Stores. “We asked them to share why they donate their time and talent – the reasons are as unique as the volunteers themselves.” • “As a retired IRS Agent, I like the focus and responsibility volunteering provides me. It is especially important during COVID to keep my life on a steady keel.” - Steve S • “Volunteering provides me a unique opportunity to give back to an organization that has done and still is unreserved in its support of those who live with HIV and AIDS. They have been a beacon of hope for so long. It is a small, yet significant way for Revivals to continue to champion the needs of the community.” - Gary • “Volunteering helps me to feel part of the greater picture of supporting those in need. It also enables me to use my skills to help others. In addition, the social interaction and attention to detail assists in building cognitive strength.” - Guy • “Due to COVID, I’m unemployed and for the first time I have time to give back to my community.” - Sue • “Volunteering gives me purpose. Revivals is the best volunteer organization. What DAP Health services provide to clients is par none. And the treatment of volunteers is amazing at Revivals.” - John Revivals Stores Roots Are in Heath Justice

The financial contribution that Revivals Stores provides to DAP Health is more important today than ever before, according to David Brinkman, CEO. “The AIDS crisis taught us that a community response is the most effective response if we want to address inequities in healthcare,” he said. “When people are in need and in fear, we must remember our humanity and take a place on the front lines.” As DAP HEALTH continues fighting to end HIV in the Coachella Valley, it has is also calling out severe healthcare inequities exposed by COVID, especially among Black and LatinX people. “Equality cannot be experienced by one until it is experienced by all,” Brinkman said. The Mystique of Revivals Stores Revivals is reinventing resale, adding brand new items at affordable prices. Selling never-used items such as bedding is old hat for the 25-year-old retailer; it’s been doing that for more than a decade-and-a-half. But five years ago, the decision was made to get into the new home décor business. Today, locals vote Revivals ‘Best Furniture Store’ because of its affordable collection of trend right items. A leader in retail, Revivals is the only thrift shop in America to feature its own brand of new furniture, lighting, rugs and accessories. Shoppers at Revivals can choose from brand new furniture and accessories while mixing their new style with thrift store finds from the decade of their choice. “We saw a real need in the Valley for merchandise that is stylish, good quality and affordable,” adds Dane Koch, director of retail. Revivals offers home furnishing from more than 50 vendors— including brand names such as Ashley, Diamond, and Coaster—but much of its inventory is custom-made for the store, and all of its selections fall under Revivals’ Mode label. While the Palm Springs shop focuses on all things midcentury modern, the Cathedral City

branch trades on value, and the Palm Desert outlets’ assortment is more traditional in style. Revivals employees and dedicated volunteers create a unique retail experience for the 29,000 people who shop the stores each month looking for a unique thrift store find while shopping brand new furniture and accessories. “There’s an excitement in our stores that you don’t feel at traditional retailers. Part of that is the thrill of the hunt, but there’s something else happening and I think that is connection to community. Our volunteers have created a unique community of neighbors helping neighbors inside Revivals three store locations. They know we are selling product with a purpose,” says Director of Brand Marketing, Steven Henke. About Revivals Stores Revivals has three locations: Palm Springs, Cathedral City, and Palm Desert. The stores are staffed by 180 volunteers who support the mission of Desert AIDS Project (DAP), enabling Revivals to make an annual $1 million contribution to the health center. DAP Health has earned a national reputation as one of the most comprehensive HIV/ AIDS service providers in the United States. Greater Palm Springs residents know and love Revivals Stores and have voted it as Best Resale \ Thrift \ Furniture \ Consignment\ or Vintage Clothing Store in four local reader contests this year. Revivals Stores won Best Furniture Store and Best Consignment / Resale Store in Desert Sun’s 2019 Ultimate Pride Contest, Best Consignment / Resale Store in Desert Magazine’s 2019 Best of the Valley, Best Thrift Store in CV Independents 2019 Best of Coachella Valley Contest, Best Thrift Store in GED Magazines 2019 Out Awards Contest, and Best Consignment / Best Thrift Store and Best Vintage Clothing Store in Palm Springs Life’s 2018 Best of the Best Contest.

BUSINESS PROFILE

THE ERA OF SAINTS AND MARTYRS IS OVER BY JOSEPH A. McCORMACK

When I first started recruiting executives to lead HIV/AIDS organizations 40 years ago, exceptional candidates were willing to take a substantial pay cut to lead these organizations because the disease personally impacted them. An HIV diagnosis or the sickness and death of family and friends was a powerful motivator to bring experience and talent to the table for these leadership opportunities. Emerging community-based organizations, and even some national organizations, had little or no public support and relatively small budgets, but many talented people stepped forward -- sometimes at great personal sacrifice-- to lead them. Twenty years ago, LGBTQ advocacy and social service organizations were able to attract top leadership talent at below market rates because members of the community wanted to be their authentic selves at work and escape the discrimination or code of silence required even in many other progressive organizations and corporations. Boards of Directors today may have a rude awakening when they discover that their compensation packages need to be competitive with other nonprofits of similar size with a similar focus in their high cost of living areas. This is especially true when they’ve had a long-time or founding CEO whose salary was set 10 or more years ago with only modest annual merit or cost-of-living increases. Whether the leadership transition is necessary because of retirement, voluntary departure or a need for new vision and direction, the salary of a new CEO can be substantially more. We are often asked to advise on compensation before we even submit a proposal. For organizations seeking exceptional leadership, a review of the Guidestar Compensation Report is an important first

step in deciding what to pay your next leader. Seeking a bargain is setting out to find someone who is earning below par for their experience. That’s not a formula for attracting top talent, and search committees or managers who ignore the data are setting themselves up for failure. Equity and inclusion are a priority for many nonprofits today, especially those whose goal is to reflect the communities they serve. If the goal is to recruit a bilingual candidate, a person of color or a transgender leader, you are in competition with hundreds of other organizations seeking similar candidates, and you may find yourself in a bidding war. If you can attract an out-of-work candidate at less than they were earning in their previous position, what guarantee do you have that they won’t leave as soon as a better and more lucrative opportunity comes along? As the compensation for CEO’s has steadily risen, so has the compensation for other nonprofit executives. Search consultants who give you sound advice that your compensation range is not competitive are not “making excuses” when real time data shows that you are expecting to be dazzled by the talent they bring to the table when your pay is under market. Even when your mission is important to a candidate, you can’t buy a Bentley with a Buick budget. There are few saints and martyrs willing to work for less than they can earn elsewhere today, and setting out to find them is not a winning strategy. Joe McCormack is the Founding Partner of McCormack+Kristel, the first gay-owned retained search firm in the U.S., with offices in New York, California and Washington, DC.

>> GIVINGTUESDAY GivingTuesday is a global day of generosity that will take place on December 1, 2020. It’s a global generosity movement, unleashing the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world. GivingTuesday was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. Over the past 8 years, this idea has grown into a year-round global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity. At a time when we are all experiencing the pandemic, generosity is what brings people of all races, faiths, and political views together across the globe. Generosity gives everyone the power to make a

positive change in the lives of others and is a fundamental value anyone can act on. Join the movement and give - each Tuesday and every day - whether it’s some of your time, a donation, or the power of your voice in your local community. It’s a simple idea: whether it’s making someone smile, helping a neighbor or stranger out, showing up for an issue or people we care about, or giving some of what we have to those who need our help, every act of generosity counts and everyone has something to give; whether its locally, nationally or globally. www.givingtuesday.org

DOHC PERSPECTIVE

DESERT OASIS HEALTHCARE IS 27TH ON FORTUNE BEST WORKPLACES IN 2020 BY BARRY DAYTON

“Treat your employees like they make a difference … and they will” is a guiding principle at Desert Oasis Healthcare (DOHC), put into action through its Employee Success Program thus making DOHC #27 on Fortune Best Workplaces in Health Care 2020 in survey feedback from nearly 800,000 employees nationwide. In 2020, DOHC employees showed their partnership with management in greater ways than ever before. “The coronavirus pandemic has turned the world upside down for almost everyone and 2020 has been one of the most challenging years that most of us can remember in our lifetimes,” said Dr. Marc Hoffing, Medical Director of Desert Oasis Healthcare. “That’s why I am so proud of how our employees have met the daily challenges of COVID-19 and continued to provide excellent care to our patients.” As the pandemic hit California in March, Desert Oasis Healthcare (DOHC) quickly provided clinical staff with the necessary personal protection equipment (PPE) and transitioned to work-fromhome jobs for nonclinical staff. DOHC also formed a COVID-19 Task Force that provided the latest information and updates to staff through its employee intranet and to its patients and other visitors to MyDOHC.com, the company website. In the earliest days of the pandemic, DOHC also worked with NBC Palm Springs to produce a public service announcement with community partners Eisenhower Health and Desert Care Network. In determining the Fortune Best Workplaces in Health Care & Biopharma 2020 list, Fortune Magazine enlisted the services of the namesake analytics firm that had already bestowed Great Place to Work® recognition on DOHC for two consecutive years. Best Workplaces rankings were determined by analyzing anonymous survey feedback from nearly 800,000 employees working in the Healthcare & Biopharma industry in the U.S. DOHC’s Employee Success Program commits to the health and

wellness of its staff with offerings that include lunchtime sessions for yoga, vegan cooking, stress reduction in the workplace, parenting and bereavement support, as well as weekend and after-hours programs for hiking, weight loss management, smoking cessation, and much more. HARC – Health Assessment and Research for Communities – recognized this commitment to employee self-actualization at its inaugural Coachella Valley Workplace Wellness Awards. “When the independent panel of judges voted DOHC as the first Grand Prize winner of their Workplace Wellness Awards in 2016 we were pleased and flattered to be recognized for our work in prioritizing employee health and wellness,” said Dr. Teresa Hodgkins, VP of Clinical Quality Initiatives at DOHC. “When we won the award for the second consecutive year, we thought it was time to remove ourselves from award consideration and become the presenting sponsor of the awards – which we’ve done every year since – so that we could help HARC advance workplace wellness for others in the Coachella Valley and beyond.” Although Desert Oasis Healthcare appreciates awards and accolades like being #27 on the Fortune Best Workplaces in Health Care 2020, the real reward comes with increased employee morale and productivity, as well as decreased absenteeism and health care costs. Dr. Hoffing added, “As we are all tested in the new and different ways we have been with COVID-19, we have evidence every day that the employees of DOHC all have the same goals: providing the best quality care for our patients while practicing selfprotection and concern for our fellow employees.” For more information, visit www.mydohc.com.

PROM ON NETFLIX DEC 11 BY RYAN TURRIN

Everyone Deserves A Chance To Celebrate. Meanwhile, in small-town Indiana, high school student Emma Nolan (newcomer Jo Ellen Pellman) is experiencing a very different kind of heartbreak: despite the support of the high school principal (Keegan-Michael Key), the head of the PTA (Kerry Washington) has banned her from attending the prom with her girlfriend, Alyssa (Ariana DeBose). When Dee Dee and Barry decide that Emma’s predicament is the perfect cause to help resurrect their public images, they hit the road with Angie (Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman) and Trent (Andrew Rannells), another pair of cynical actors looking for a professional lift. But when their self-absorbed celebrity activism unexpectedly backfires, the foursome find their own lives upended as they rally to give Emma a night where she can truly celebrate who she is. VIOLA DAVIS AND CHADWICK BOSEMAN STAR IN MA RAINEY’S BLACK BOTTOM COMING TO NETFLIX DECEMBER 18

Tensions and temperatures rise over the course of an afternoon recording session in 1920s Chicago as a band of musicians await trailblazing performer, the legendary “Mother of the Blues,” Ma Rainey (Academy Award® winner Viola Davis). Late to the session, the fearless, fiery Ma engages in a battle of wills with her white manager and producer over control of her music. As the band waits in the studio’s claustrophobic rehearsal room, ambitious horn player Levee (Chadwick Boseman) — who has an eye for Ma’s girlfriend and is determined to stake his own claim on the music industry — spurs his fellow musicians into an eruption of stories revealing truths that will forever change the course of their lives.

August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play Fences. Washington and Viola Davis reprised their roles from the 2010 revival of the play that earned both actors Tony Awards. The film adaptation was written by Wilson and appeared on numerous 2016 top film lists, ultimately winning Davis the ‘Best Supporting Actress’ Academy Award and Golden Globe. The film also received Academy Award nominations for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay (August Wilson) and Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role (Denzel Washington).

Adapted from two-time Pulitzer Prize winner August Wilson’s play, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom celebrates the transformative power of the blues and the artists who refuse to let society’s prejudices dictate their worth. Directed by George C. Wolfe and adapted for the screen by Ruben Santiago-Hudson, the film is produced by Fences Oscar® nominees Denzel Washington and Todd Black. Colman Domingo, Glynn Turman, Michael Potts, Taylour Paige and Dusan Brown co-star alongside Grammy® winner Branford Marsalis’ score.

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’ s powerhouse ensemble cast includes: • Academy Award winner Viola Davis (Widows, Fences) as Ma Rainey. • Chadwick Boseman (42, Get On Up, Black Panther) as Levee. • Emmy Award winner Glynn Turman (In Treatment, How to Get Away with Murder) as Toledo. • Tony and Olivier Award nominee Colman Domingo (If Beale Street Could Talk) as Cutler. • Michael Potts (Show Me A Hero, True Detective, The Wire) as Slow Drag. • Taylour Paige (Zola, Hit The Floor) as Dussie Mae. • Dusan Brown (42) as Sylvester.
