Annual ‘Tour de Bronx’ set for Oct. 27 On Tuesday, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr., The Bronx Tourism Council and Transportation Alternatives announced the 19th Annual “Tour de Bronx,” the largest free bicycling event in New York State which will take place on Sunday, October 27th. Sponsored by the Montefiore Medical Center, St. Barnabas Hospital and the Bronx Lebanon Medical Center, the “Tour de Bronx” traditionally brings together nearly 6,000 bicyclists from around the world. “The ‘Tour de Bronx’ is a wonderful event, and each year I am always excited to join my fellow Bronxites and thousands of visitors from around the city, nation and the world to ride and see all the great things The Bronx has to offer. Riding a bike around our borough is the healthiest way to see the best of the Bronx, and I am delighted to hear the positive feedback from visitors each year when they participate in the ‘Tour de Bronx.’ I invite everyone to join me again this year to tour our beautiful borough,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. “This great event shows Bronx residents that biking is not only a fun and healthy way to get around the borough. It’s a viable transport option,” says

Transportation Alternatives’ Executive Director Paul Steely White. To further prove that The Bronx is fast becoming a destination, last year’s event welcomed registrants from all over the United States, as well as Europe, South America and even Asia. “Given the amount of positive coverage we’ve been enjoying in national and international media, we expect to see an increase in visitors participating in this event,” stated Olga Luz Tirado, Executive Director of The Bronx Tourism Council. “We are anxious to show off our borough to the rest of the world.” “The New York Botanical Garden looks forward to welcoming the Tour de Bronx cyclists to nature’s showplace, dressed in its finest fall colors” said Aaron Bouska, Associate Vice President for Government and Community Relations at the New York Botanical Garden. “Not only do cyclists get to see the best of the Bronx on October 27, but they do so in a healthy and sustainable manner – values we share and promote every day at the Garden. Congratulations to Bronx Borough President for his leadership in this endeavor.” “For the past five years, Montefiore has supported Tour de Bronx as a way to promote

healthy living and wellness in our community while celebrating the historic neighborhoods and beautiful greenways of the Bronx,” said Steven M. Safyer, president and CEO, Montefiore Medical Center. “Montefiore is committed to improving the health of the community we serve and we are proud to sponsor this borough-wide biking event.” It couldn’t be easier to participate in the “Tour de Bronx,” as numerous City agencies and corporate sponsors are rolling

out the red carpet for cycling enthusiasts. Metro North Railroad will waive their bicycle permit requirements and quantity limits for the day, allowing for groups of riders to participate. The Department of Transportation will fit and distribute free bicycle helmets beginning at 8 a.m. while supplies last. The rider must be present and sign a waiver. For children under the age of 18, a parent or legal guardian must be present and will also need to sign a waiver. Coca Cola will distribute

Dasani water, Powerade sports drinks and Fuze. Pizza will be provided after the ride courtesy of Domino’s. The event offers both a 25and 40-mile course, each of which winds through dozens of beautiful Bronx neighborhoods, historic districts, parks, waterfront, Greenway paths and more. Both routes culminate at the New York Botanical Garden for end-of-ride pizza, refreshments and a music festival. Log onto www.ilovethebronx. com to register.

Financial literacy and empowerment seminar at the Hebrew Institute By PAULETTE SCHNEIDER If you’re looking for a way to make millions without working and to retire in high style, an upcoming financial literacy and empowerment seminar at the Hebrew Institute of Riverdale may not be the place for you. There won’t be any hot stock tips for those who spend their early afternoon at the shul on Sunday, October 20, from 1 to 3:30 p.m. But there will be sound advice on how to teach kids about money, how to avoid major debt, how to establish a budget, how to handle credit cards and how to make wise personal choices. The entire community is invited to meet accomplished professionals like Tamar Snyder, an expert in teaching financial literacy to teens; social worker Anna Kirshblum, who’s trained to counsel people with financial woes; and rabbis who have helped people from all financial strata cope with debt. “There’s a lot of shame about it,” H.I.R.’s Rabbi Ari Hart said. “There shouldn’t be shame. These things happen, and millions of Americans are struggling with it. Maybe somewhere along the line you made a choice that wasn’t

the best choice. But sometimes it may be out of your control,” like in the case of medical debts—which account for more than half of our serious money problems. “This isn’t about how to retire with a fancy house. It’s really about a way of life—about walking humbly and modestly before God,” Hart said. “And that means not needing to show off, not needing to keep up with whatever your neighbor is wearing or driving. It’s about living a life of humble and modest choices that reflect your core values.” Living modesty, he noted, isn’t just about following dress codes. “It’s about making good choices and avoiding debt, setting realistic expectations, understanding what your means are and living within those means. Those are very strong Jewish values, so we want to promote that as well” through Torah study sessions at the seminar. A forum for teaching financial empowerment was inspired by the biblical concept of a sabbatical year—the next one begins this coming fall—when personal debts are either forgiven or turned over to a rabbinical court for collection at a later date with a payout plan.

The event was created in partnership with the Jewish Board of Family and Children’s Services and with Uri L’Tzedek, a social justice organization cofounded by Hart. The sponsors view it as a “spiritual mandate.” “Debt is one of the leading causes of divorce and suicide, God forbid. Debt really affects people’s lives in so many ways,” Hart said. “There’s this idea if you’re in debt, you’re lazy and you’re a bum and you deserve it. The Torah says the opposite. It says don’t pass any judgment on the person who’s in debt. “We in the society have to help people get out of debt. We want to empower them to lead lives that are healthy and stable and enable them to make good choices for their own futures. So we want to help bring this information, this awareness, to the community. And that’s what this is all about. It’s really a program for everybody. The more people come, the more we can help.” The Hebrew Institute of Riverdale is located at 3700 Henry Hudson Parkway, at Netherland Avenue. Light refreshments will be served. Those planning to attend are asked to contact Rabbi Hart at 718-796-4730, extension 124, or ravari@thebayit.org.

Marble Hill Houses get new CCTV By HAYDEE CAMACHO Residents of the Marble Hill Houses will have a new tool to help them combat crime. Closed circuit television cameras (CCTV) will be installed and operational in the housing development’s 11 buildings by the end of the year. Council Members Ydanis Rodriguez and Fernando Cabrera joined Marble Hill Houses Resident Association President Paulette Shomo and New York City Housing Authority Chairman John B. Rhea in announcing the start of construction for the installation of the cameras at Marble Hill Houses last Thursday, October 3rd. Marble Hill Houses is bordered by Broadway, Exterior, West 225th and West 230th Streets. Council Member Rodriguez, whose district includes Marble Hill, allocated approximately $395,000 and Council Member Cabrera, whose district encompasses Kingsbridge, secured $230,000 in City Council funding for the project. The 2013 city budget included a $10 million allocation for the installation of CCTV at select NYCHA developments. By year’s end, cameras are expected to be up and running in about 85 developments. During meetings, Ms. Schomo, members of NYCHA staff and officers from the 50th precinct worked together to plan the best way to use and place cameras in the development. “You should all be incredibly proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish today,” Rhea told the residents. “Because of your tireless effort to ensure safety in this community and working with elected officials and NYCHA, you’ve been able to bring about what’s most important, which is money back to your community to protect you.” Verna Coleman has lived at the Marble Hill Houses for 44 years and was relieved to hear about the security system. “It’s not safe here, she said. “We really need the cameras. Even in the daytime, people have been robbed and hurt. I’m worried about people older than me.” Forty-one year Marble Hill resident Jamie Jones described the development as a “beautiful place, a safe place,” when she moved in, but “not anymore.” “I for one will feel safe and all the other residents feel the same way I do,” she said. Crime stats for the 50th precinct through September 30th indicate 704 reported crimes compared to 734 for the same period last year. While the numbers for grand larceny dropped from 311 in 2012 to 300 this year and burglaries dipped from 137 to 117, felonious assaults rose from 96 to 113. A 2008 article in The New York Times questioned the effectiveness of the use of video cameras in deterring crime. Security cameras have become ever present in the city, not only beaming down from the outside of private buildings, lobbies and elevators, but also in A.T.M.s, offices and stores.

The article noted that while cameras have been useful in solving crimes, their contribution to crime reduction is difficult to establish because other factors might be at work, including changes in police strategies. Paul J. Browne, then the chief spokesman for the NYPD, said that after security cameras were installed in a housing development, crime dropped about 35 percent. Citywide decreases were far less, he said. Captain Paul Rasa, Commanding Officer of the 50th precinct said the 5-0 has had two dedicated police officers who patrol the Marble Hill Housing development for the past few months. “It’s bringing back community policing he said. “They’re going to come out, walk and talk to the people of the community. They’re going to act on any information. With the addition of cameras, it’s definitely going to help our cause here and keep the community safer.”

Residents of Marble Hill houses and local police celebrate the forthcoming installation of security cameras in their housing project.

Montefiore Medical Center announced its two-fold approach for informing the community about the October 1 launch of the health insurance exchange marketplace open enrollment period provided by the Affordable Care Act (ACA). With a workforce of more than 19,000 employees, Montefiore is educating its own associates to help spread the message while also conducting on-the-ground community outreach about the State’s health exchange program called New York State of Health. The exchange will offer 2.7 million people in New York State, including nearly 270,000 uninsured Bronx residents, the opportunity to gain vital health insurance coverage. It is a “one-stop-shop” where consumers can search for and enroll in a plan that’s right for them. Consumers can compare different insurance options, check eligibility for government assistance programs like Medicaid and for financial assistance. It’s important to note that people with pre-existing conditions can get insurance through the exchange. The open enrollment period lasts six months starting on October 1 and ending March 31, 2014. Upon full implementation of the ACA, more than 1 million NY State residents, including nearly 100,000 people in the Bronx, will be newly insured. “As the largest employer in the Bronx, and a trusted source of healthcare information, we have thousands of associates who can serve as ambassadors, spreading the word about the availability of affordable health insurance,” said Steven M. Safyer, M.D., president and CEO, Montefiore Medical Center. “With so many uninsured or underinsured residents in the Bronx, the health and well-being of

our community will be greatly impacted by the increased availability of health insurance. Our patients now have the opportunity to select an affordable plan that suits their needs, and we’ll be right there to help them through that process in English, Spanish and many other languages spoken in the Bronx.” Montefiore started disseminating information about the health exchanges to its associates in August. Materials were developed in English and Spanish in order to reach as many people as possible. A variety of channels are being used to ensure the message touches everyone and provides adequate information for Montefiore associates to then educate their families, friends and anyone else to whom they speak in the community. Several approaches used to internally share information include providing educational group presentations; reaching out through newsletters and online assets, like the Intranet and its social networking site, Yammer; and sharing information on electronic screens throughout the hospital. To reach the external audience, Montefiore has a team of outreach coordinators who attend community events and speak at numerous venues, including churches and mosques in the area. Additionally, certified application counselors (CACs) will provide free in-person assistance to individuals as they check their eligibility and enroll in health coverage. In advance of Oct. 1, Montefiore deployed the CACs in the community to educate consumers and collect their information in order to provide assistance once open enrollment started. Moving forward, CACs will attend events in the community where they will provide fair

and impartial information in English and Spanish about enrollment, plans, premium tax credits and cost-sharing subsidies that help offset the cost of coverage. Additionally, with its partner, the Children’s Health Fund, Montefiore received federal funding for outreach and enrollment assistance programs at its South Bronx Health Center. Montefiore also is working closely with other community partners such as the Bronx Community Health Network, to expand outreach to uninsured patients at community health centers, increase awareness among other community partners and educate health center personnel to assist patients in navigating the exchanges. “We want everyone to be aware of these new health exchanges. In addition

*

to creating opportunities to buy health insurance, we think the exchanges will help some people realize they are already eligible for Medicaid and can now gain coverage. This will be a win-win for everyone involved,” said Kate Rose, senior director, public policy & government relations, Montefiore Medical Center. “At this important moment in the history of the U.S. healthcare system, we’re proud to be a pioneer through innovative efforts to insure the public and manage their care.” Consumers can enroll via the website, by phone, mail or in person. Those who enroll by mid-December will have health coverage beginning January 1, 2014. For more information about the New York State of Health exchange, visit http:// nystateofhealth.ny.gov/.

A Pioneer Italian Builder

In the early twentieth century, The Bronx swiftly changed from an overwhelmingly rural area dotted with small suburban villages to a densely populated part of the great metropolis of New York. One of the men responsible for this transformation was an immigrant from Amalfi, Italy named Antonio D’Andrea. D’Andrea was born in Italy in 1868. His father, Michael D’Andrea, was a builder. Unfortunately, Michael died in 1874 when his son was only the tender age of six. Young Antonio then was raised by his mother, Vincenza. He attended the local public schools, but the prospects for a young man without a father in those days were not the brightest. Thus, in 1890, Antonio D’Andrea was among the first in the increasingly large wave of Italians leaving Italy to find a better life in the United States. He was then 22 years old. In New York City, he met Victoria Reis, courted her and married her in 1896. Through the years, they were blessed to have eleven children, six boys and five girls. Eight years after his arrival, and two years after his marriage, Antonio settled in the newly created borough of The Bronx. He foresaw that large numbers

We Have Expanded Our Commercial Stationery Line!

of people, including his fellow Italian immigrants, would leave the densely populated neighborhoods of Manhattan and resettle in the more open, country-like spaces of the mainland. Antonio D’Andrea began by erecting apartment and two family houses on Webster Avenue. In subsequent decades he followed this up with houses on White Plains Road, 188th Street and Crotona Avenue. He also built an apartment house on Jackson Avenue and 156th Street and two apartment houses on 150th Street. To attract residents, he made sure to use good materials and to make the structures both artistic and comfortable. Developers who hired him were attracted by his reasonable prices. So high was D’Andrea’s reputation that he was hired to build St. Anthony’s Church on Commonwealth and St. Lawrence avenues. D’Andrea established his office practically in the middle of The Bronx, on Garfield Street in the Van Nest neighborhood. He, his wife and large family, however, settled in Unionport and attended the Unionport Road Church. There, the highly respected pioneer Italian builder lived the comfortable Bronx life he was unable to attain in his native Italy.

GUEST EDITORIAL:

Columbus Day Celebrates Western Civilization By Thomas Bowden On October 12, 1492, Christopher Columbus discovered the New World, opening a sea route to vast uncharted territories that awaited the spread of Western civilization. Centuries later, the ensuing cultural migration culminated in the birth and explosive growth of the greatest nation in history: the United States of America. It is fitting that we have set aside a day to honor the Great Explorer. On one level, Columbus Day honors the man himself for his many virtues. Columbus was a man of independent mind, who steadfastly pursued his bold plan for a westward voyage to the Indies despite powerful opposition--a man of courage, who set sail upon a trackless ocean with no assurance that he would ever reach land--a man of pride, who sought recognition and reward for his achievements. We need not evade or excuse Columbus’s flaws--his religious zealotry, his enslavement and oppression of natives-to recognize that he made history by finding new territory for a civilization that would soon show mankind how to overcome the age-old scourges of slavery, war, and forced religious conversion. Thus, the deeper meaning of Columbus Day is to celebrate the rational core of Western civilization, which flourished in the New World like a pot-bound plant liberated from its confining shell, demonstrating to the world what greatness is possible to man at his best. On Columbus Day, we celebrate the civilization whose philosophers and mathematicians, men such as Aristotle, Archimedes, and Euclid, displaced otherworldly mysticism by discovering the laws of logic and mathematical relationships, demonstrating to mankind that reality is a single realm accessible to human understanding. On Columbus Day, we celebrate the civilization whose scientists, men such as Galileo, Newton, Darwin, and Einstein, banished primitive superstitions by discovering natural laws through the scientific method, demonstrating to mankind that the universe is both knowable and predictable. On Columbus Day, we celebrate the civilization whose political geniuses, men such as John Locke and the Founding Fathers, defined the principles by which bloody tribal warfare, religious strife, and, ultimately, slavery could be eradicated by constitutional republics devoted to protecting life, liberty, property, and the selfish pursuit of individual happiness. On Columbus Day, we celebrate the civilization whose entrepreneurs, men such as Rockefeller, Ford, and Gates, transformed an inhospitable wilderness populated by frightened savages into a wealthy nation of self-confident producers served by highways, power plants, computers, and thousands of other life-enhancing products. On Columbus Day, in sum, we celebrate Western civilization as history’s greatest cultural achievement. What better reason could there be for a holiday? Mr. Bowden is an analyst focusing on legal issues at the Ayn Rand Institute and is the author of The Enemies of Christopher Columbus.

The debt ceiling To The Editor: On Oct. 17, the current debt ceiling will be reached, which means that the U.S. Government will not be able to borrow any more money. And the Democrat politicians are going bonkers. They are going crazy. They evidently feel that the debt limit is meaningless and should automatically be raised in perpetuity. If that is the case, why even have a debt limit? Why, Congressman Engel? But the debt ceiling is doing exactly what it was supposed to do when this statutory limit to restrict the total federal debt was enacted in 1917 when Congress passed the second Liberty Bond Act. It FORCES Congress to figure out ways to cut spending and thus allow many more years to go by before the limit is once again reached. Politicians (especially Democrats) are notorious for spending taxpayer money. What the hell do they care? It doesn’t come out of their pockets and it buys them the votes that keep them in power. Thank Heaven, that at least outside of New York, there’s a Republican Party that’s willing to look out for the people who pay taxes. The people of this community are well aware of Congressman Engel’s positions on Israel, Medicare and Social Security. He is

quite vocal on these issues. The debt ceiling is also an extremely important issue, and I think the community deserves and is en-

Caregiving issues should be discussed To The Editor: Most people of my generation (50 and older) are tackling a growing issue: how to take care of our aging parents. Some have it all figured, many don’t. It’s a tough issue, and one most of us never really think about it until we are right in the middle of it all. It is quite possible that these aging parents spent most of their working years providing immediate needs of their families. Their needs were left on the back burner of daily life. What ever you can do it is time to do it now!! The caregiver should not have left unsupported in their effots; many going into their own resources. I saw a recent AARP report of NYC 50+ that said 40% had provided unpaid care to a relative or friend – of course we don’t look at it as caregiving, it’s simply taking care of family. But many people I know are struggling with where to go to get the right information, and the lack of resources to help provide this critical care. I feel that we in New York City can do better, and with demographic shifts revealing there will

be fewer family members to take care of us when we are older, it’s something that the candidates asking for my vote for mayor and city council must address. We are looking down the road at how effect Long Term Care Insurance will be for today’s current Caregivers. Priscilla Crowell To The Editor: I am not hearing much from the candidates about aging in New York City. The issue seems pretty absent from all the candidates asking for my vote. I find this pretty interesting as my demographic, votes aged 50 and older, who no doubt determine who wins and who doesn’t. One issue I’m hoping to hear something from the candidates about is caregiving. More and more of us are taking care of an older relative or loved one, and between work, children and everything else, I’m sure not the only one wishing there were more resources out there to support me. Many people around my age are juggling and struggling with this. I’m certainly not complaining, just thinking a little help might be nice. The candidates talk so much about a better New York – how about making it a better place to live, work and age? I’d like to hear more about their plans to tackle key kitchen table aging issues like caregiving before I decide who to vote for. Rev. Wendy J. Kelly-Carter
