Candidates compete for endorsements New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo on Monday endorsed state Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/ Westchester) for reelection. “Jeff Klein has fought for the people of Westchester and the Bronx for years. Jeff has been a relentless advocate for the people of New York, fighting for common sense gun control and universal statewide pre-kindergarten. He is committed to getting results that improve the lives of everyday New Yorkers and I’m confident he will continue to be a strong partner in Albany to help move our state forward. Today, I’m proud to endorse Jeff Klein for reelection,” said Governor Cuomo. “Over the past four years, Governor Cuomo and I created government that works. Together, we passed four historic on time budgets, froze property taxes and generated jobs in this state. We delivered $300 million for full day universal pre-kindergarten in New York City without taxing residents, made our streets safer by enacting the toughest gun laws in the nation and protected our middle-class senior citizens by expanding SCRIE and EPIC eligibility. I’m proud to be his partner in government and honored to

have his endorsement,” said state Senator Klein. Koppell could take some comfort in the endorsement of the Amsterdam News which last week endorsed Oliver Koppell for the State Senate seat now held by Klein in the September primary. In endorsing Koppell, the paper expressed its thankfulness that there is an alternative to incumbent State Senator Jeff Klein who, it said, was responsible for the re-election of Dean Skelos as Senate Majority Leader and the deadlock in Albany, where the Senate has failed to pass a higher minimum wage, campaign finance reform, the women’s equality agenda, and the DREAM Act. By contrast, the paper cited Koppell’s outstanding legislative record as a State Assemblyman for 23 years, and the “Bottle Bill.” Typically, there was no discussion of the past twelve years Koppell served in the City Council, where critics felt that he was particularly ineffective, noted only for leading the effort to thwart the twice-expressed will of the voters in overturning term limits, and his endorsement of Republican Michael Bloomberg in 2009, ironically against former

Comptroller Bill Thompson, and African-American candidate. Koppell said, “It gives me great satisfaction to be endorsed by this important New York newspaper for my long history as a progressive Democrat dedicated to promoting legislation that is beneficial to all New Yorkers.” On Wednesday, July 23, 2014, the Stonewall Democratic Club of New York City also endorsed Koppell. Over 100 members were present for the endorsement. In announcing the club’s endorsement of Koppell, a representative said, “The Stonewall Democratic Club of New York City is proud to endorse Oliver Koppell in the race for the 34th Senate District seat. SDNYC has a history of standing up against those who want to limit our community’s success and growth. Oliver has shown he is a leader in his community, especially for the LGBT community during his time in the City Council. He’s running so we can move our communities forward and that’s just what our members and community in the 34th district need.” Founded in 1986, the Stonewall Democratic Club was the first and only citywide LGBT Democratic organization. gious club continues to advocate and lobby for legislation that guarantees equality and fairness for the LGBT community. The club promotes its objectives by endorsing well-qualified candidates for city, state, and national office who support the political ideas, ideals, concerns, and priorities of the LGBT community in New York City and New York State. “I am gratified that the well-respected Stonewall Democratic Club of NYC has given me its endorsement in the belief that, as a staunch advocate of human rights, I will best represent the interests of the LGBT community in the State Legislature,” Koppell said. Meanwhile Senator Klein continues to exploit his institutional advantage in having the support of the Democratic Party leadership.“Latinas for Klein” launched their grassroots effort to reelect Senator Klein on Monday and hailed him as a leader on women and Latina issues. “State Senator Jeff Klein has shown true leadership, both in Albany and right here in The Bronx. On the DREAM Act, women’s is-

sues and more, Senator Klein has shown a deep commitment to the issues that matter to Latinas, and I am excited to stand with him today as we launch ‘Latinas for Klein.’ Senator Klein has built a broad coalition of support across his district and the entire state, and I am proud to be a part of that coalition as we work towards his victory in September,” said First Lady of The Bronx Hilda Diaz. “I had the pleasure of working with Senator Klein on the Latina Women’s Wellness Program. Senator Klein took the time to understand the needs of Latina health issues and has been supportive of their participation in health screenings and health education. I look forward to spreading the word about his great work to our fellow Latinas as we secure another victory for Senator Klein,” said Paloma Hernandez, President and CEO of UHP. “Through his leadership in the State Senate, our communities have benefited from programs that promote health, such as: The Wellness Program with Urban Health, The Teen Check the Continued on Page 2

Koppell wins support of gay Dems Continued from Page 1 Box campaign, and the Latina Suicide Prevention Program. Senator Klein was also one of the key legislators behind the Safe Act, a gun-control law that is regarded as one of the toughest and most comprehensive in the country. He also supports the 10-point Women’s Equality Act, as well as being a steadfast supporter of The DREAM Act, which would enable undocumented immigrants access to state tuition assistance programs. These are just a few of the progressive initiatives that Senator Klein supports in his efforts to help realize a more just, and more egalitarian state of New York,” said Councilwoman Annabel Palma. “I support Senator Klein, as a friend, a colleague, and a partner in the Bronx, and I know that he will continue to be a concerned and effective leader for Latina women in the State Senate,” Palma added. “Gracias por su apoyo! I’m so proud to stand here with you and grateful for this tremendous showing of support,” said Senator Klein. “As mothers, grandmothers, and sisters, I know that education is a paramount concern. This year I fought to deliver $300 million to the City, allowing our children to attend free, full day universal pre-kindergarten. Over the past three years, I’ve brought home over $1.4 million in BOOST and bullet aid to enhance elementary and middle schools right here in our district. This year, I also secured increased child care subsidies so that women don’t have to make the difficult choice of keeping their careers or staying home because child care is far too costly.” Prominent Bronx Latinas including -- First Lady of the Bronx Diaz; Councilwoman Palma, District Leaders Julia Rodriguez, Toni Figueroa and Marjorie Velazquez; State Committeewomen Nelly Medina and Maria Gonzalez; Bronx Democratic County Committee leader Ischia Bravo; CEO and President of Urban Health Plan Hernandez; Virna Lisy Crespo and Elizabeth Sepulveda -- signed up a crowd of over 50 women at Babalu on East Tremont Avenue on Monday to participate in the effort. Before the kick-off event, over 30 Latinas already signed on to the Latinas for Klein initiative. Klein also added the Buildings & Construction Trades Council of Greater New York to his growing list of union endorsements this past Friday. “During his time in the State Legislature Senator Klein has been a strong advocate for the working men and women in the construction industry and for all New Yorkers. We urge him to continue to support prevailing wage requirements to create good jobs, project labor agreements to deliver cost savings to taxpayers, and strong workplace and scaffold safety standards to protect workers and the public,” said President Gary La Barbera. The Building and Construction Trades Council of Greater New York represents 15 affiliates of national and international unions with 100,000 members in New York City. “I’m honored to receive the endorsement of the Buildings & Construction Trades Council, whose hardworking members create the infrastructure that supports our great State. I look forward to continuing to fight for their needs and the needs of all of New York’s workers,” said Senator Klein. The Buildings & Construction Trades Council of Greater New York adds their support to a growing list of labor organizations for Senator Klein. These endorsements include: the Transportation Workers Union Local 100, the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Workers Union, Plumbers Union Local 1, the Uniformed Firefighters Association of Greater New York, Teamsters Joint Council 16, DC

Continued from Page 1 Teaneck, NJ with her husband and three children, Deann is a former resident of Riverdale and is happy to be returning to the community in a professional capacity. When asked how she feels about joining the team at the Riverdale Y!, Deann says, “Riverdale is an extremely special place, one that is home to a robust, diverse and vibrant Jewish community. I feel extremely fortunate to have been given the opportunity to join the Riverdale Y and to help the organization reclaim its rich legacy. To me, the magic of a Jewish community center is its ability to be home to every person who identifies in any way with the Jewish community, and its simultaneous ability to welcome and engage the larger community. My vision is that the Riverdale Y! will become the agency of choice for excellence in cultural, educational, recreational and physical wellness for everyone in the Bronx.” The Riverdale Y is eager to introduce Forman to the community and invites everyone to come say hello at the Riverdale Y!’s Fall Open House Sunday, September 7th – when the community comes together after the Summer break, with the opportunity to preview many of the Y!’s Fall programs.

Congressman Eliot Engel, a member of the House Subcommittee on Health, announced that a bill he authored to combat muscular dystrophy has passed the Energy and Commerce Committee with bipartisan support. The MD CARE Amendments Act of 2013 updates the MD Care Act to reflect the latest research, enables the Director of the NIH to expand and intensify programs related to various forms of muscular dystrophy, and ensures that all nine of the most common forms of muscular dystrophy are targeted by this program. This legislation also strengthens the Muscular Dystrophy Coordinating Committee, improves data collection, and increases awareness of treatment options among medical professionals. “Thanks to the programs provided for in the MD CARE Act, many people with muscular dystrophy are living longer than ever before, thus generating new challenges in our fight against MD. This bill responds to these new demands without requiring any additional funding. It makes targeted updates to the MD Care Act, bringing our programs in line with the scientific advancements we have achieved since the law was last updated in 2008,” said Congressman Engel. Muscular dystrophy is not a single disease, but is an overarching term for a spectrum of genetic disorders resulting in progressive muscle weakness and degeneration. Hundreds of thousands of children and adults currently suffer from the various forms of muscular dystrophy in the United States and around the world. Since 2001, the M.D. Care Act has successfully coordinated and focused biomedical research. As a direct result of this law, the lifespan of the average American living with Duchenne muscular dystrophy – the most common form

Educational Landmarks III: Mount St. Vincent Tucked up into the northwesternmost corner of The Bronx lies the campus of the College of Mount St. Vincent. Operated by the Sisters of Charity for over a century and a half, the grounds hold two landmark structures that can tell modern Bronxites what it was like to engage in higher educational studies in earlier times. Originally, the grounds constituted a private estate that was purchased by famed American Shakespearean actor Edwin Forrest in the mid-nineteenth century. On a site overlooking the vast expanse of the Hudson River with a view of the Palisades on the New Jersey side, he built his home between 1848 and 1852. Forrest intended that he and his actress wife would both live their lives there. After his death, he envisioned that it would become a retirement home for aged actors. Thus, this house was designed by local builder Thomas C. Smith as a Shakespearean castle, with six octagonal crennelated towers, each of a different height. While under construction, Forrest often came to the site and resided in a cottage nearby, also a landmark. Unfortunately, he and his

wife came to a very public quarrel, each accusing the other of adultery. As a result of the sensational divorce trial, Forrest, in 1856, sold the estate, which he called Fonthill, to the Sisters of Charity. The Sisters established the Academy (now College) of Mount St. Vincent there. They used the castle for academic purposes. Over the years, it served as a library and an administration building. They also erected a new structure for their Mother House, dormitory and classrooms near the castle. Made of red brick and designed by Henry Engelbert, it was built between 1857 and 1859. As the institution expanded, additions designed by E. Wenz were made in 1865, 1883, and 1906 to 1908. Sited on a high bluff 400 feet above the Hudson, the massive four story structure is in the Romanesque Revival style and is topped by a 180-foot high square tower. It was here that the girls, all wearing uniforms, received instruction by the Sisters who conducted the classes in French. Today, more modern buildings are scattered over the 75-acre campus, but the original ones are still in use today.

GUEST EDITORIAL

The French Contingency Reprinted from The New York Sun | July 22, 2014

While Prime Minister Netanyahu is pressing the attack in Gaza, he may want to get ready to send in Israeli paratroopers to protect the Jews of France. That may sound rash. But to judge by the events in Paris this week, the government of President Hollande doesn’t seem to be up to the job. No sooner did Israel move to protect its population from the rocketing out of Gaza than an anti-Semitic mob splintered off from a protest and descended on a Paris synagogue — with 200 worshippers inside. According to a witness quoted by the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, the mob had “murder on its mind.” The police guard at the venerable Don Isaac Abravanel Synagogue was inadequate. Only Jewish community self-defense groups averted a ghastly tragedy. Things have only escalated since then, with ever more violent protests ostensibly over Gaza. “Ostensibly” because anti-Semitism is never about Jewish behavior. What’s happening in France is a deeper, abiding hostility than Gaza. After all, the congregation of the synagogue in the rue de la Roquette did nothing to the Gazans. No, the Paris mobs are out for the blood of French Jews. On Sunday they attacked the part of a suburb of Sarcelles that is known as “Little Jerusalem,” setting Jewish establishments on fire and burning cars. These attacks are occurring 10 years almost to the day since Prime Minister Sharon, in a memorable demarche, called for the evacuation of all the Jews of France. Sharon had noted that all of his country’s prime ministers seek to encourage Jews to move to Israel. “I say that to all Jews around the world,” Mr. Sharon said. In the case of France, Sharon warned, “I think it’s a must and they have to move immediately.” Sharon’s statement was in July 2004. It caused the Quai D’Orsay to erupt in the kind of indignation the French have raised to a high art, but Sharon never withdrew his warning. Sharon had issued his call after, in the space of a few weeks, vandals destroyed a mural painted by Jewish schoolchildren, a 17-year-old Jewish student was stabbed in the neck, a town hall in Vichy was painted in swastikas, “Jews out” was painted on graves at Colmar, a Jewish center was set on fire at Toulon, and a school for Jewish boys was firebombed. For all the sputtering at the time from the Quai D’Orsay, France did nothing to attenuate its support for the Palestinians. And that is important. In 2001, a French ambassador in London told a dinner party, “All the current troubles in the world are because of that sh**ty little country Israel.” The ambassador, Daniel Barnard, got reassigned but was defended by the foreign ministry and the Paris press. He had said what the French elite think. France’s leaders are this week insisting otherwise, that they are against anti-Semitism. Prime Minister Valls on Sunday put out a statement, condemning, according to the Jerusalem Post’s cable, the “anti-Semite who hides his hatred of the Jew behind an appearance of anti-Zionism and the hatred of Israel.” This is why more and more Jews are leaving France, a trend that has been covered by our erstwhile contributor, Michel Gurfinkiel. Violence against Jews would not be permitted, Monsieur Valls averred. On verra, as the French say. Our own instinct is that it would be wise for Mr. Netanyahu to make contingency plans.

In need of repair To The Editor: Congress cannot continue to neglect our nation’s aging infrastructure. U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx sent a letter on July 1, to transportation officials in all 50 states warning them that federal funding for road work, construction projects, and mass transit will soon be cut if Congress failed to renew authorization for the Highway Trust Fund. The House passed legislation to reauthorize federal funding just in the nick of time, however, the bill only extends financing through the end of next May. My concern is that this shortterm fix fails to address the scope of the work needed to maintain our complex transportation system. The New York State Department of Transportation estimates that over 12 percent of the state’s 17,000 bridges are structurally deficient and just over 27 percent are functionally obsolete. New York’s public roads haven’t fared any better. According to the White House, an estimated 23 percent of the public roads across the state are in poor condition.

Published by Northside Publishing Corp., Inc. 5752 Fieldston Road Bronx, New York 10471 (718) 543-5200

But New Yorkers don’t need statistics to tell them that the Tappan Zee Bridge is in dire need of a replacement, or that many of our highways are in need of repair. These are longstanding issues that must be addressed. I have long called on Congress to do more to fix our aging infrastructure with greater urgency. It’s a critical safety issue that we

must address, and one that would boost our economy by creating more jobs. Our bridges, roads, and highways are too important to be ignored. I will continue working with my colleagues to find a solution that addresses America’s long-term transportation needs. Eliot L. Engel Member of Congress

Statement on the 20th anniversary of the AMIA attack

The Co-Chairs of the Latino-Jewish Congressional Caucus, Rep. Eliot Engel (D-NY), Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL), Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (D-FL), and Rep. Xavier Becerra (D-CA), released the following statement on the 20th Anniversary of the terrorist attack on the AMIA Jewish social service agency in Buenos Aires. ‘On the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attack against AMIA, the central Argentine Jewish social service agency in Buenos Aires, the Latino-Jewish Congressional Caucus stands in solidarity with Argentina’s Jewish community and the families of the victims. This act of cowardice, which left 85 dead and more than 300 wounded, is a somber reminder of the threat

anti-Semitism and terrorism pose worldwide. ‘We applaud the efforts undertaken by AMIA’s Special Prosecutor Alberto Nisman, whose investigation and 2006 report implicated Iranian officials, with the support of Hezbollah, as responsible for this heinous crime. Because of his report, in 2008, Interpol issued arrest warrants against five Iranian officials and a Hezbollah operative in Lebanon. We must redouble our efforts to apprehend and bring to justice those responsible and we must remain vigilant against those who wish to turn their hate into violence and terrorism. This sad anniversary should also be a stark and urgent reminder that we are all in this together and we need to renew our collective commitment towards the pursuit of justice.’
