On eve of vote, Koppell support slipping Surrounded by neighborhood backers on Friday morning, State Senator Jeff Klein’s reelection campaign surged with new support from key Riverdale elected officials: Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz, Councilman Andrew Cohen, and former Councilwoman June Eisland. Klein also received endorsements from prominent local Democratic Party figures including the 81st Assembly District’s Female District Leader Randi Martos, Male District Leader Bruce Feld and State Committeewoman Helen Morik. “Jeff Klein has done a superb job representing our community as its State Senator and I wholeheartedly endorse him for reelection. We have worked closely together on all of the important issues in our community and on legislation in Albany. He works hard and he gets the job done,” said Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz. “The most important issue in this election is ‘who has the greatest potential to effectively fight for the people in the 34th Senate District?’ I am certain that person is Senator Klein,” Dinowitz added. “Senator Klein has been an outstanding partner in government both here in the Bronx and up in Albany. Whether he is standing with our community against irresponsible development or working to maintain and improve quality of life, Jeff Klein always has the best interests of his constituents in mind. Not only has Senator Klein been a terrific advocate for our community, his effective leadership in Albany has benefited all New Yorkers,” said Councilman Andrew Cohen. “From enacting the toughest gun laws in the country and ensuring funding for universal pre-K to increasing the the minimum wage and successfully fighting for marriage equality, Jeff Klein has been a champion for all New Yorkers. I am proud to endorse him for re-election and and I look forward to working with him in the years to come.” “I’ve known Jeff Klein and interacted with him as an elected official as far back as when he was a Democratic district leader, an assemblyman and now as state senator. Politics is the art of the possible and Jeff Klein makes progressive politics possible. He has certainly proven himself as a leader in our community and richly deserves to be reelected to the 34th state senate district,” said former Councilwoman June Eisland. Political leaders also heaped praise on Klein for his acute ability to get things done. “Jeff Klein has been a strong, effective, and very active leader in our community. He has done a tremendous job for his constituents and I know that he will continue to do an excellent job as our state senator,” said Randi Martos, Female District Leader, 81st Assembly District. “Jeff Klein deserves to be reelected based on his legislative record and service to our community. He’s worked well with our other local elected officials and has been

Key local public and party officials including Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz, City Councilman Andrew Cohen, former Councilwoman June Eisland, and all of the elected party officials affiliated with the Benjamin Frankliln Reform Democratic Club have abandoned their long-time relationship with Oliver Koppell and are backing State Senator Jeff Klein for reelection. active and effective in solving constituent problems” said Bruce Feld, male district leader, 81st Assembly District. “I’m pleased to support Sen Jeff Klein for reelection. Jeff has shown a true understanding of the needs of the community by providing support for much needed programs and services. He deserves reelection,” said Helen Morik, state committeewoman. “I’m proud to partner with such dedicated elected officials and deliver results with them on everything from major Democratic issues to local concerns. Working as a team we have successfully slowed the unreasonable, proposed Montefiore development, thwarted an unwanted mixed use housing complex for seniors and the ‘severely mentally ill,’ and brought a legal fight against LG to protect the beauty of the Palisades from its proposed tower. I look forward to fighting for this community well into the future with my colleagues and I’m honored to have their support,” Klein said. The Senator has clinched endorsements from top Bronx Democrats in every corner of the borough including Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and former Bronx Borough President Fernando Ferrer; Bronx Democratic County Party Chairman Assemblyman Carl Heastie; State Senator Ruben Diaz; Assembly Members Marcos Crespo, Mark Gjonaj, Luis Sepulveda, Jose Rivera, and Michael Benedetto; and Coun-

cil Members James Vacca, Ritchie Torres, Fernando Cabrera, and Annabel Palma. This has not sat well with Lorraine Coyle Koppell, the former Councilman’s wife, who was critical of Cohen and Dinowitz, in a letter to members of the Ben Franklin Club. “Who would have thought being “grateful forever to Oliver” would last as long as four months? It is almost funny if it were not so sad. We did expect more from Cohen. We did not expect much from Dinowitz. The word “reform” has long since left Jeffrey’s mouth. The good news is that the campaign is going well, volunteers calling everyday and money coming in every day. So let the race continue. What neither Dinowitz nor Cohen realize is they have lost whether Oliver wins or loses. Oliver is running to beat a Republican in Democratic clothing and if he wins great and if loses then he has done the right thing. Do Dinowitz or Cohen ever recover from this? Does anyone ever trust them again? Well let’s see what happens. See you at the petition meeting. We may need bigger space but I will let you know. Both candidates made their pitches to Ben Franklin Club members this week, in letters sent to club membership in advance of Thursday’s endorsement meeting. In his letter, State Senator Klein discussed his disappointment with his fellow

State Senate Democrats when they took hold of that body’s leadership in 2008, noting that the Democratic conference “became known not for its ability to govern but for its corruption,” a major force that led him to form the Independent Democratic Caucus. “By contrast, since 2011, we have had four consecutive on-time budgets, enacted the toughest gun control laws in the nation, passed the historic marriage equality act, provided the path for tens of thousands of toddlers to receive high-quality pre-K, and raised the minimum wage,” wrote State Senator Klein. In his own letter, Oliver Koppell charged that State Senator Klein “betrayed” the voters by forming the IDC, and accused him of failing to deliver on a variety of legislation, such as campaign finance reform and the DREAM Act. He also attempted to explain his 2009 endorsement of Mike Bloomberg for mayor against Democrat Bill Thompson. Many observers have opined that it is hypocritical for Koppell to demand party loyalty today when he himself felt no such loyalty to Democrats in the 2009 mayor’s race. “An issue has been raised of my having endorsed Bloomberg five years ago,” wrote Koppell. “How does that compare with the $150,000 that Klein and his IDC have acceptContinued on Page 2

Koppell support slipping

Continued from Page 1 ed in contributions from Bloomberg? My one decision five years ago pales in comparison to the 800 days that Klein has been enabling right wing Republicans to suppress progressive legislation. I can do a mea culpa for one endorsement. Can Klein do a mea culpa for 800 days and counting?” Several borough political observers were flabbergasted at Koppell’s attempt to explain away his Bloomberg endorsement. “Oliver wrote the law that overturned term limits and went on to endorse a Republican for mayor,” said one observer. “I’d say one mea culpa could never make up for more than 1,500 extra days of Mike Bloomberg, and we have Oliver Koppell to thank for that.” Meanwhile a group of so-called “progressive” Democrats, Northwest Bronx for Change, has throun their support to Mr. Koppell, who they feel, “will make a great state senator. He is a long time progressive who has amassed a great deal of experience in government serving as an assembly member, city council member and even attorney general. Oliver is not afraid to speak his mind and will do what he thinks is right even if it is not politically popular. And, he stands for the kind of change that Northwest Bronx For Change stands for.” But it is criticism of Mr. Klein, not love for Koppell, that seems to be driving them. They state that Koppell “is a quality candidate, but the truth is that the number one reason we endorsed him is something his opponent did. “After the last state Senate election, leaders of progressive causes in New York were overjoyed. Although Democrats were not expected to win the majority of seats in the state Senate, they did. Prior to that election many bills that were thought to have enough support to pass the Senate were simply not brought up

for a vote. Finally, it seemed, progressive bills that passed the Assembly would also be allowed to come up for a vote in the Senate. But then, just when things were looking rosy, hopes for advances were dealt a serious blow. “One Democratic state senator, Jeff Klein, led a handful of other Democrats to declare that they would caucus with the Republicans instead of the rest of the Democrats. They called themselves Independent Democrats. These senators, who switched sides, were rewarded with perks they might not have otherwise gotten, but they made a deal that hurts their constituents who want change. The deal gave both Jeff Klein and the leader of the Republicans the power to block legislation from coming up for a vote in the Senate. This works out well for Wall Street and the 1% who want to block bills that would lead to changes they do not want, but it sure doesn’t work so well for the rest of us. “This election will affect all New Yorkers, not just residents of the 34th state senatorial district. It could decide whether Republicans will continue to have a veto over which legislation comes up for a vote in the Senate. So that’s why we endorsed Oliver Koppell who stepped up to challenge Senator Klein.” Meanwhile, Mr. Klein picked up more significant union support. The Hotel Trades Council, one of the most politically active unions in New York, on Tuesday announced their support for the reelection of State Senator Jeff Klein. “Jeff Klein’s exemplary leadership in the State Senate has led to the passage of progressive legislation important to our members and their families including full funding for universal pre-k in NYC, labor peace requirements for gaming facilities throughout the State and over-time protections for hotel workers. Jeff fights for working families

and we believe that he should continue to be our voice in the Senate,” said HTC’s Political Director, Josh Gold. “I’m a proud friend of labor. I’m honored that HTC supports my campaign. I always have and always will fight for hardworking New Yorkers like their members,” said Klein. The New York Hotel and Motel Trades Council, has been steadily beefing up its political operation, recently going from little political presence in New York City to being a statewide player, with one article noting that they went from a sideline-sitter to game-changer in two years. In 2010, they played a key role in Eric Schneiderman’s upset victory for Attorney General and in 2012 were credited with turning around Grace Meng’s successful campaign to be the Democratic nominee for 6th Congressional District. This past year, the Union was instrumental in Scott Stringer’s come from behind win over Elliot Spitzer, and HTC’s political

director managed a 7 figure independent expenditure on behalf of Mayor de Blasio’s general election. HTC represents over 35,000 hotel, hospitality and gaming employees working in over 300 locations across New York and New Jersey. The Hotel Trades Council adds to a list of labor endorsements for Mr. Klein including: the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Workers Union, the Transportation Workers Union Local 100, Plumbers Union Local 1, the Uniformed Firefighters Association of Greater New York, Teamsters Joint Council 16, DC 9 IUPAT and Steamfitters Local 638. Finally, Mr. Koppell got a bit of unwelcome support, when the Palestine Telegraph, a notoriously anti-Israel publication, surprisingly urged their readers to send money to Mr. Koppell through the website of the left-wing Daily Kos. “Please chip in $3 to help Daily Kos and Ollie Koppell take back the New York Senate,” they mysteriously urged their readers.

State Senator Jeffrey D. Klein (SD-34) and Assemblymember Mark Gjonaj (AD80) announced their support for Adriano Espaillat in the NY-13 Congressional Primary, adding to a series of Bronx endorsements. This support comes in the wake of several major labor union endorsements including RWDSU, DC 9, UFT and HTC who announced their support earlier this month and joins a broad coalition of support for Espaillat from across the District. “I am pleased to announce my support for my friend and longtime colleague Adriano Espaillat today,” Jeff Klein, 34th District State Senator said. “Adriano has focused his campaign on creating opportunity for all, through smart economic development, new affordable housing initiatives and equal education options – all of which the residents of The Bronx could hugely benefit from. We need a Congressmember who is focused on the next twenty years not just the next two – it is time for a new voice to represent this District and Adriano Espaillat is that voice.” “Adriano Espaillat will bring opportunity to The Bronx and I am proud to endorse his candidacy for Congress today,” Mark Gjonaj, 80th District State Assemblymember said. “Adriano has been a fighter for affordable housing. If our communities are going to stay communities we need a voice like Adriano’s in Congress. He has a smart economic development plan that will keep our small businesses in business, our residents’ apartments affordable and our neighborhoods thriving. I look forward to working with him on his campaign and in Congress to do just that.” “I am proud to receive the support of Senator Klein and Assemblymember Gjonaj today,” Adriano Espaillat, 13th District Congressional Candidate said. “The 13th

RIVERDALE DENTAL CARE, P.C. Everybody is welcome including elderly and children from 2.5 years of age

The Korean War Veteran Memorial Day began following the Civil War when women decorated the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers in grateful recognition of their sacrifices. Nevertheless, the vast majority of veterans prefer to receive their accolades while they are still around. This was the experience of Daniel Wolfe. Wolfe was born in 1930 and grew up on Seabury Place, a small street between Charlotte Street and Boston Road. He attended the public schools during the Great Depression and World War II. Since he just barely passed his classes, he began working upon graduation in 1948. His father was a tailor, and young Daniel Wolfe first worked in the garment industry. He soon took a higher paying job as a switch tender-brakeman for the New York Central. Daniel Wolfe’s life was interrupted by the Korean War. He was drafted into the army. After Chinese “volunteers” entered the conflict, Wolfe and his unit were at the Imjin River, a stream that led to the Han River and to Seoul, the capital of South Korea. That position had to be held. Wolfe was th part of a patrol rd of Company L, 15 Regiment, 3 Division.

We Have Expanded Our Commercial Stationery Line!

Walking along the edge of a ridge flanking the west bank of the river, Wolfe’s platoon was suddenly ambushed by the Chinese. Burp guns blasted at them in a semi-circle of fire, killing Sergeant Massingale. As the rest of the platoon sought safety down the slope to the river, Wolfe crawled over the deadly terrain to retrieve his sergeant’s body. He dragged it down the 60-foot cliff, wading through the river amid fire from the Chinese above until he reached safety. After his discharge, Wolfe returned to New York, took an aptitude test that showed he was qualified for college. He entered CCNY, majored in Biology, and was graduated in 1958. He taught life sciences at Jane Addams Vocational High School on Tinton Avenue in The Bronx. He married the school librarian and had three children. He retired at the age of 62. When he and his wife were briefly living in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, 46 years after the incident at the Imjin River, Daniel Wolfe was given the Bronze Star with a “V” for valor. Then, his bravery and selflessness were remembered.

Free lecture celebrating Bronx’s history of community activism

On Thursday, May 22, 2014 from 5:00 until 7:00 pm, Dr. Evelyn Gonzalez, William Paterson University, will deliver a free lecture celebrating the Bronx’s history of community activism at the Museum of the City of New York as part of the Bronx County Centennial celebrations. The lecture ‘The Changing Bronx: Community Activism and Non-profit organizations’ will cover the early history of the borough followed by examples of challenges and successes as the Bronx continues to develop and change over time. Topics will include the early history of the Bronx, leading examples of early community activism such as the tenant associations, rent strikes and housing rehabilitation efforts including Banana Kelly, Sebco, WHEDCO, and more. Concluding with examples of activism in present day, Dr. Gonzalez’s illustrated overview fittingly celebrates the borough’s centennial. Following Dr. Gonzalez’s talk, the Museum’s education department will unveil its

new school program ‘Bronx Tales: A History of the Borough’ during the reception. This event is a proud partnership between the Museum of the City of New York and the Bronx Borough President’s Office. ‘My office is proud to partner with the Museum of the City of New York on this wonderful new program highlighting the great history of The Bronx. This year is the centennial of Bronx County, and in partnership with the Museum we can provide our students with this wonderful opportunity to learn more about the history of their hometown. I encourage all Bronx schools to take advantage of this fantastic program, and I am incredibly grateful that the Museum of the City of New York has joined our centennial celebrations in such a tremendous way,’ said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. The Museum of the City of New York celebrates and interprets the city, educating the public about its distinctive character, especially its heritage of diversity, opportunity, and perpetual transformation. Founded in 1923 as a private, nonprofit corporation, the Museum connects the past, present, and future of New York City. It serves the people of New York and visitors from around the world through exhibitions, school and public programs, publications, and collections. For more information, visit www.mcny.org. New educational course offered at Chabad

Paradigm Shift is offered at Chabad of Riverdale, 535 W. 246th Street, each Sunday, 9:45-11:15 am, until June 22, 2014. This spring, Chabad of Riverdale is marking the 20th anniversary of the Rebbe’s passing with an educational course, Paradigm Shift: Transformational Life Teachings of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, prepared by the Rohr Jewish Learning Institute (JLI). In the winter of 1950, during the immediate aftermath of the destruction of European Jewry in the Holocaust, a charismatic 48-year-old Rabbi Schneerson assumed leadership of the ChabadLubavitch movement, charting a mission to rebuild world Jewry from the ground up. His vision? To spread an appreciation for the infinite value and limitless potential of the individual and to demonstrate how every circumstance in life presents an opportunity for man to improve his society. Elie Wiesel, the noted scholar and Nobel

Prize laureate, remarked of his experiences with the Rebbe, “I know of no one who has left the Rebbe without being deeply affected, if not changed, by their encounter. Time in his presence begins running at a different pace. You feel inspired, you feel self-examined, you are made to wonder about the quest for meaning which ought to be yours. In his presence nothing is superficial, nor is it artificial. In his presence you come closer in touch with your inner center of gravity.” The course is a monumental contribution to the Rebbe’s legacy--the product of a collaboration of over forty scholars. It presents the Rebbe’s unique outlook and central contributions to Judaism and society, addressing questions such as: What was his understanding of the human being and what were his hopes for humanity? What stands behind the continued success of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement? And how can we apply these insights toward living a more purposeful life? ‘Realizing Your Potential,’ the second lesson of Paradigm Shift, taking place on Sunday, May 25, addresses how we ought to react when we uncover unseemly deficiencies about ourselves. It will also explore how we can unconditionally love ourselves but not fall victim to inertia that can impede us from realizing our potential. Discovering our divine soul-its existence and very practical relevance-will redefine how we view ourselves, our shortcomings, and our latent potential. ‘The Rebbe’s vision and outlook is the primary guiding force of my life and I’m excited to be able to share his unique insight with the community,’ says Rabbi Levi Y. Shemtov, Spiritual Leader of Chabad of Riverdale and instructor of this course. Like all JLI programs, Paradigm Shift is designed to appeal to Jews at all levels of Jewish knowledge, including those without any prior experience or background in Jewish learning. All JLI courses are open to the public, and attendees need not be

affiliated with a particular synagogue, temple, or other house of worship. Interested students may call 718-5491100 Ext. 10 or visit www.ChabadRiverdale.org.

Kenton Gomez wins Bronx Zoo Birdathon

Birders of all skill levels flocked to the WCS Bronx Zoo at dawn on Saturday to participate in the Wildlife Conservation Society’s first-ever Bronx Zoo Birdathon. Kenton Gomez from the Bronx claimed first place after identifying 201 bird species in the wild and in the zoo exhibits. Some species identified in the wild include black-throated green warbler, blackbumian warbler, and black-crowned night heron. Currently, birds are migrating through New York from regions south. The Bronx Zoo is a birder’s paradise. The park sits on 265 acres of hardwood forest that is transected by the Bronx River - the only freshwater river in New York City. The diverse habitats and access to water make the zoo the perfect environment to host dozens of migratory and local bird species including warblers, vireos, thrushes, woodpeckers, ducks, wading birds, and more. Participants were given a checklist of bird species found in and around the zoo and zoo staff directed bird-watchers to areas of the zoo where they were most likely to observe wild birds. Families were also encouraged to seek exotic bird species within the zoo’s expansive exhibits where animal keepers provided facts and chatted with young birders. WCS ornithology experts, Dr. Steve Zack, WCS Sr. Conservation Scientist and Coordinator of Bird Conservation; and David Oehler, Bronx Zoo Curator of Ornithology, were on-hand to discuss WCS bird conservation programs, offer birding advice, and answer questions.

The Tzofim Friendship Caravan, a group of highly talented Israeli boys and girls will perform at the Conservative Synagogue Adath Israel of Riverdale (CSAIR) at 5:45pm on Friday, May 30th. The performance will be followed by an Israeli song session, family Kabbalat Shabbat services and a Shabbat dinner. Please contact CSAIR to RSVP for the dinner. The Tzofim Friendship Caravan, sponsored by the Friends of Israel Scouts, Inc. is part of a larger delegation of five hundred Israel Scouts who, each summer, represent Israel at camps and communities across North America. This summer, three Tzofim Friendship Caravans will travel throughout the United States, bringing Israeli culture to North America through lively musical programs made up of songs and dances. They perform both in Hebrew and English. Each caravan is comprised of ten incredibly motivated and talented Israel Scouts, ages 16 and 17, and two adult leaders. The Tzofim Friendship Caravans will perform at camps, community centers, synagogues, churches, schools, nursing homes and hospitals throughout the summer months. In addition to their energetic show, the Tzofim Friendship Caravan also runs dozens of various activities; some using the gigantic Attractive Lands blow up map of Israel, that can be done with children of all ages. Each member of the Tzofim Friendship Caravan, like all members of the summer delegation, is a proud member of the Israel Scouts Movement who has gone through extensive interviews and a challenging selection process. They must each demonstrate strong leadership skills, a high level of scouting and an incredible knowledge of Israeli and Jewish history. Fluency in English and strong communication skills are also requirements for each delegate.

Intergenerational planting at the Riverdale Y

Monday, May 12th - On a beautiful sunny day, members of the Riverdale Y! Senior Center were joined by volunteer students from the Riverdale Y!’s Early Childhood Center to plant new flowers along the Riverdale Y! entryway. The 4-year olds and the sexagenarians dug, weeded, planted and landscaped in this morning expedition to beautify the Y! The Riverdale Y! Senior Center also has an intergenerational garden in the back of the Y! managed by Morris Friedberg, President of the Senior Center. Children from the Y!’s Early Childhood Center, after school programs, and camps are regularly invited to join in this green-thumb project, learn about nature, agriculture and where food comes from. Throughout the seasons, the garden’s fresh vegetables and herbs are incorporated into the regular lunches at the Senior Center, and the flowers add color to the Y! both inside and out.

The Meaning of Loyalty The exchange of emails and letters from the supporters of the two men competing to represent many of our communities in the New York State Senate reveals a lot about them, the nature of politics, and what we can expect over the next few months. If there is anything sad about this dialogue, it is the expectation that loyalty is owed to individuals or to a political party or faction, but not to the community, our city, state or nation, or to the principles of democracy and free expression. Not surprisingly, Lorraine Coyle, who is Mrs. Oliver Koppell, accuses Assembly Member Jeff Dinowitz and newly-elected Council Member Andrew Cohen of treachery in their very public endorsements of State Senator Jeff Klein for reelection. Let’s take up the case of Mr. Cohen first. It is said that success has a thousand fathers, and defeat is an orphan. Oliver Koppell did endorse Mr. Cohen to succeed him in the City Council. So did Jeffrey Dinowitz, Jeff Klein, Congressman Eliot Engel, Assemblyman Mark Gjonaj, Borough President Ruben Diaz and a long list of other supporters, including this newspaper. Oliver Koppell’s endorsement was undoubtedly welcomed, but certainly was no more decisive than any other. Ms. Coyle suggested that “who would have thought being ‘grateful forever to Oliver’ would last as long as four months? It is almost funny if it were not so sad. We did expect more from Cohen.” Now we don’t see how Mr. Cohen owed more to Mr. Koppell than to Mr. Klein. Nor were we aware of any proviso that should Mr. Koppell decide to reenter politics, and in this case run against another supporter of Mr. Cohen’s, that Cohen had any special obligation to his predecessor in the Council to back him, and turn his back on that other supporter. In fact it is at the center of the argument against Koppell that it is a very different matter to turn from office a loyal friend, an incumbent, than it would have been to back Mr. Koppell for an “open” or vacant seat. That is why the leadership of the Ben Franklin Reform Democratic Club is sticking with Mr. Klein, and the membership may well follow suit on Thursday when the meet to endorse a candidate. From the standpoint of Mr. Dinowitz, loyalty should be a twoway street. It is now twenty years since he was elected to the New York State Assembly and he has emerged as his community’s most senior public official and the go-to guy for political and public issues. The issue of loyalty between Mr. Dinowitz and Mr. Koppell, was resolved on the evening of September 28, 2008, on the stage of the old Loew’s Paradise Theater on the Grand Concourse. Mr. Dinowitz was a leader in the “rainbow rebellion” which won control of the Bronx Democratic party from the leadership of Assemblyman Jose Rivera. Dinowitz was backed by every local public and party official in his community – except for one: then-Councilman Oliver Koppell. Rivera was known for refining the art of nepotism in local politics, installing his less-than-accomplished son, Joel as the “majority leader” of the City Council, a post with little power but a hefty salary, and his daughter, Naomi, as an Assembly Member, defeated two years ago after a nasty scandal brought her down. Koppell stood up with ethically questionable Rivera supporters Carmen Arroyo, Maria Baez, and Larry Seabrook among others against the highly regarded “rainbow rebellion” team, which included Dinowitz for the post of Chairman of the Bronx Democratic County Committee. Dinowitz won, but Mr. Koppell has never been held in the same high regard by his former allies in his own political club since that time. In a perfect world, two friends could march in lockstep, never deviating from their loyalty and friendship to each other. But this is not a perfect world. If either man has the major role in the dissolution of their alliance, it can fairly be said that it was Mr. Koppell who first betrayed Mr. Dinowitz, six years ago. That his wife charges that Mr. Dinowitz is disloyal to a once-infuential reform Democratic movement that has long receded into history is astounding. Is she suggesting that Jose Rivera and Larry Seabrook are better “reformers” than Mr. Dinowitz? There are indications that Mr. Koppell’s association with the left-wing Daily Kos website, which has been raising thousands of dollars for him, has a big following – among enemies of the State of Israel, a result of their longstanding criticism of the Jewish State. Now we know that Mr. Koppell has always been a strong supporter of Israel. But it seems that the rabidly anti-Israel Palestine Telegraph, assuming that anyone The Daily Kos likes must be critical of Israel Continued on Page 15

Ready for retail restaurant robots?

By IRA STOLL Retail restaurant robots are coming soon to a checkout counter near you. For anyone who dismissed as a bunch of right-wing propaganda the claim that a higher minimum wage and mandatory health benefits would mean more workers replaced by computer screens, here is a reality check. McDonald’s announced this month that it will deploy computer kiosks at 7,000 restaurants in Europe, allowing customers to place their own orders and pay by swiping their own credit card. Another restaurant chain, Panera, is deploying the computer kiosks for customers in the U.S., a development that Bloomberg News reported under the headline, “More Kiosks, Fewer Cashiers Coming Soon To Panera.” The fast-food trade publication QSR reports that a McDonald’s in Laguna Niguel, Calif. is experimenting with iPads that let customers customize their hamburgers. A White Castle in Columbus, Ohio, has deployed computer kiosks that let customers place their own orders, unassisted by a paid human being. “Both Chili’s and Applebee’s recently announced that they are adding tablets throughout their restaurants, allowing customers to order and pay at their tables,”

Published by Northside Publishing Corp., Inc. 5752 Fieldston Road Bronx, New York 10471 (718) 543-5200

the QSR story says. Nextep Systems, a Troy, Michigan-based firm that specializes in touch-screen self-order systems, says its sales for 2013 were up 50% from the prior year. At some point, you won’t even need the kiosk — you’ll be able to order from an app on your smartphone, maybe even before you arrive at the restaurant. And it’s not only restaurants. Even Costco, a firm that President Obama has praised for its labor practices, features self-checkout lanes where customers scan the bar codes on their own purchases, then pay by swiping a credit card and signing on a computer scanner. No cash-register employee needed, whether at minimum wage or “living wage.” For the restaurants and customers, the technology has potential benefits besides savings on labor costs. Accuracy is supposedly improved, and the restaurants seem to hope they can sell more food to customers who don’t have to worry about being embarrassed when they ask out loud for that supersize fries. For people who worry about jobs and joblessness in America, though, there’s a concern that yet another occupation may have its ranked severely thinned by technological progress. The number of travel agents in the

U.S., for example, declined to about 64,000 in 2013 from 117,000 in 1997, as Orbitz, Expedia, Priceline and Travelocity, not to mention the web sites of the airlines and hotels themselves, replaced human agents with self-service. Automated corporate telephone answering systems and voicemail trees had roughly the same effect on the number of telephone switchboard operators. Smart meters that communicate automatically directly with utility companies have put meter readers on the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ list of fastest declining occupations. “Pay at the pump” with a credit card at self-serve gasoline stations has reduced the number of gas station attendants, and windshield-based transponders like E-ZPass have reduced the need for human highway toll collectors. Optimists will point out that there are some jobs that are difficult to automate — the BLS lists home health aides, physical therapists, dental hygienists, and substance abuse counselors among the fastest growing occupations. And there is something awesomely powerful and efficient about the dynamism with which the invisible hand of capitalism reallocates labor to more productive tasks. Still, even political moderates well familiar with the laws of economics are voicing concerns about the effects of technology. The economist and former treasury secretary Lawrence Summers warned recently of “the devastating consequences of robots, 3-D printing, artificial intelligence, and the like for those who perform routine tasks. Already there are more American Continued on Page 15

Continued from Page 14 men on disability insurance than doing production work in manufacturing. And the trends are all in the wrong direction, particularly for the less skilled, as the capacity of capital embodying artificial intelligence to replace white-collar as well as blue-collar work will increase rapidly in the years ahead.” Microsoft founder Bill Gates warned recently, “you have to be a bit careful: If you raise the minimum wage, you’re encouraging labor substitution, and you’re going to go buy machines and automate things.” Mr. Gates, who made himself one of the richest men in the world and founded a company that employs a lot of people, knows that machines and automation can create jobs and wealth as well as destroy them. But that’s one thing when it happens on its own, another thing when it happens when politicians, through regulation, making hiring an employee so expensive that it’s cheaper for the employer just to buy a machine instead. Ira Stoll is editor of FutureOfCapitalism. com and author of JFK, Conservative.

Loyalty Continued from Page 14 as well is urging their readers to contribute to “Ollie” Koppell through the Daily Kos. The question now is whether Mr. Koppell is smart enough to cut his losses, distance himself from the Daily Kos and their fellow travellers, and return the money now tainted by association with the most vicious critics of Israel. Sometimes loyalty necessitates making the really tough decisions. Up until now, Oliver Koppell has fallen short.
