Showdown expected at Dem club The challenge to State Senator Jeff Klein will the the key item on the agenda when the Benjamin Franklin Reform Democratic Club meets next week to endorse a candidate in the primary election slated for this September. After a 50-year association with the club, former City Councilman Oliver Koppell should be a shoo-in for the club’s nod. But key players within the club say that an outright endorsement of Koppell is the “least probable outcome” of the meeting. The alternatives include a no endorsement vote or an endorsement of incumbent State Senator Jeff Klein. Koppell has lost favor among many in the club following an incident that took place in 2008. As Koppell’s protégé and successor, Assemblyman Jeff Dinowitz emerged as a leader of the “Rainbow Rebellion” that toppled Bronx County Democratic Boss Jose Rivera, Koppell remained a Rivera loyalist to the end, actively opposing Dinowitz’s elevation as Chairman of the Bronx County Democratic Committee, a little-known but significant position.

The Rainbow Rebellion emerged after Rivera maneuvered two of his children, college student Joel Rivera as a city councilman, and Naomi Rivera as a state assembly member. This up front nepotism left a bad taste in the mouths of many Democrats. Ms. Rivera was turned out of office two years ago by Mark Gjonaj, the first Albanian American to achieve public office in New York. Ms. Rivera became vulnerable when the New York Post revealed that she had put her boyfriend on the public payroll. But Koppell was eager to get a committee chairmanship, any committee chairmanship, from the Council leadership that had heretofore shunned him. Rivera arranged for Koppell to assume the chairmanship of the low octane Mental Health Committee. This led to a rift within the club between Koppell and others in the club leadership. It explains why there is even a possibility that Koppell might – indeed probably – be denied the club’s endorsement. For his part, Koppell is confident that he will emerge victorious on the familiar turf of his own

State Senate co-leader Jeffrey Klein announces funding for the UFT-favored concept of community schools. The presence of Klein and UFT President Michael Mulgrew at the staged event is a clear indication of a forthcoming endorsement of Klein by the powerful teachers’ union. club. When questioned about the possibility that he might lose his club’s nod, Koppell said, “We’ll see about that.” Both Koppell and Klein and

On Tuesday, May 6, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. hosted his annual celebration of Israel’s Independence at the Hebrew Institute of Riverdale (HIR). Borough President Diaz was joined at the event by Rabba Sara Hurwitz (center) of the HIR and Council Member Andrew Cohen (right), at which he presented a proclamation to the synagogue declaring the day “Israeli Independence Day in The Bronx.” “We should never ever forget, that every single day, Israel’s safety is at risk,” said Borough President Diaz at the event. “As Americans, whether we are Jewish or not, we need to continue to stand by our brothers and sisters in the State of Israel.”

their key supporters have been busy making calls to club members soliciting their support. The stakes are high, especially for Mr. Koppell.”This is an endorsement he must win. If he can’t steamroller over Klein in Riverdale, how can he expect the win in a district that includes huge chunks of Klein’s district, in The Bronx and in Westchester, places that Klein has represented for years, but in which Koppell is virtually unknown,” stated an informed source with deep knowledge of the situation. “If Klein loses, well, that would be expected in Koppell’s home turf. But if he wins or breaks even, it could be a fatal blow to Koppell. If he can’t win in his own club, he might have to stand down.” “The fact that it’s competitive within the club membership shows just how shaky Oliver Koppell’s position has become in just a few short years,” said another Bronx political insider. Meanwhile, Klein appears to have the inside track in obtaining the endorsement of the powerful United Federation of Teachers. He made a joint appearance with UFT President Michael Mulgrew last week touting funding Klein obtained dor the union’s pet “community schools” initiative. Sources from both the UFT and the Klein campaign confirm that an endorsement could be “expected in the very near future.”

Klein and Mulgrew announced a major $1.5 million citywide investment for New York City’s Community School Initiative. The funding secured by the State Senate in the 2014-2015 New York State Budget will be allocated to enhance the academic, social, and community experience for city school children and their families.
“Community Schools have a profound, transformative effect in the lives of our school children and their families and I am pleased we were able to expand the initiative to new funding levels this year. These schools truly are schools for the 21st century, recognizing that the health and wellness of our students is as vital to their learning experience as educational programs,” said Senator Klein. “State Senator Jeff Klein has been an early and important supporter of Community Schools. He understands the value of placing much-needed health and community services where they have the most impact -- in our city schools. With Senator Klein’s help we are working to spread Community Schools across the city,” said Mulgrew.

LIRR president fired over opposition to Bronx RR access According to a published report in Newsday, former Long Island Railroad president Helena Williams was let go last week because of her opposition to the MTA’s Penn Station Access Project. That project will give access to East Bronx residents to Penn Station from new Bronx Metro North stations. There are those on Long Island who feel that this project has the potential of causing problems for Long Island Railroad commuters by putting strain on the limited access to Penn Station from the east side. Both LIRR and Metro North trains will have to share right-of-way in Queens, in tunnels under the East River and on to Penn Station. According to Newsday, Williams was in frequent disagreement with MTA president Thomas Prendergast over the project. MTA Board Member Charles Moerdler, the Bronxite who is the project’s leading

supporter on the MTA Board said that he didn’t believe that Williams opposition was the reason for her dismissal. He termed the dispute as an honest difference of opinion. But Bronx Press/Riverdale Review Editor and Publisher Andrew Wolf, who conceived of the plan in the late 1960s when he was a student at City College called the overcrowding notion “just plain wrong.” Long Island commuters will now have access to Grand Central via new tunnels nearing completion, he noted. “What’s good for the goose is good for the gander,” noted Wolf. They get access to “our” terminal and we get access to theirs. There’s room for everyone, as long as the signal system keeps pace with the traffic. And in the 21st century, that doesn’t seem like such heavy lifting. This isn’t about us versus them, its about increased access for everyone.”

Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. agreed. “The expansion of Metro North service to the East Bronx has the potential to transform not just the Bronx, but the entire region. This project has been a priority of mine since I first became borough president, and I continue to push the MTA to include these four stations in their five-year capital plan. I am thrilled that so many MTA officials and board members have shown such great support for this project, and that we can also count on the support of so many public officials, including Governor Andrew Cuomo and State Senate Majority co-leader Jeff Klein. It is time to make this project happen, and I will continue to work with everyone to bring Metro North service to the East Bronx. It is time for this long-held dream to become a reality,” said Bronx Borough President Diaz.

Oliver Koppell fights for political life at Democratic club vote slated for next week Continued from Page 1 neighborhoods and provide them with supplemental health, social and education services. Community Learning Schools are schools that are transformed into “hubs” through a collaboration of educators, school administrators, parents, volunteers, businesses, organizations and health services providers. Community schools already in operation offer a variety of services from school-based heath to youth development programs, tutoring and food banks. By integrating these services within an academic environment, students receive the care and comprehensive services and resources they need to succeed. Selected schools are chosen to partici-

pate after submitting proposals to the NYC Community Learning Schools Initiative. “Community Schools can help level the playing field for our children by making much needed medical and community services available to students and their families. We recently had a mobile vision clinic screen more than 500 children at two Brooklyn schools. More than 100 children needed some kind of eye-care follow-up, glasses in most cases. Children who arrived at school unable to see, left school that day with a pair of glasses. Access to vision care is such a simple thing, but it will have a huge impact on children’s lives in school and out, said UFT Vice President Karen Alford.

supported these findings. “Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton sat before committees in both houses and took full responsibility. She and her successor, John Kerry, have said over and over again that the State Department is implementing all of the recommendations of the Review Board. “But that didn’t satisfy some of my friends on the other side. They started moving the goal posts, and so began this long, costly exercise. “They tried to tie Secretary Clinton directly to the security failures that led to this tragedy. But that didn’t turn up anything. “Then they floated the idea that our military was told to stand down in the moment of greatest need in Benghazi. Even the Republican chairman of the House Armed Services Committee said that claim had no merit. “And since there’s no wrongdoing to be found with respect to the actual attack, now we’re focused on the talking points and a so-called cover-up. “I ask again, what is it my colleagues are after? What is allegedly being covered up? “At the time the attacks took place, American embassies from Southeast Asia to the Middle East to North Africa to England were surrounded by protestors angered over an anti-Islamic video. In Egypt, our embassy was stormed. So as the fires in Benghazi were still burning and the air was thick with smoke, the CIA’s assessment was that the attack was the result of a spontaneous protest. They were wrong. And in the days that followed, they corrected that mistake, confirming that the attack was ‘a deliberate and organized terrorist attack carried out by extremists.’ “But in the days after the attack, those protests in the region were still raging. Some of them were violent. In Yemen, additional Continued on Page 9

Congressman Eliot L. Engel, the leading Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, today made the following remarks in the House of Representatives about the proposal to establish a select committee to investigate the September 2012 terrorist attacks on the American diplomatic facility in Benghazi, Libya: “I rise in strong opposition to both the rule and the bill. It’s really a political charade and this pointless attempt to find a scandal that simply doesn’t exist. “What happened in Benghazi in September 2012 was a tragedy. The loss of those four Americans broke our hearts, and it reminded us that diplomacy can be dangerous work, and that we need to do all we can to protect those who represent our country around the world. “What have we seen from certain members of the majority since that day? Partisan games. And this select committee would be nothing more than the next chapter in this political farce, just in time for the mid-term elections—and with 2016 peaking over the horizon. “What is it, exactly, that my colleagues are after? “After the attack in Benghazi, we all wanted answers. What happened that night that led to the deaths of Chris Stevens, Sean Smith, Tyrone Woods, and Glenn Doherty? Where did we fall short in protecting our people and who was responsible? What could we do to make sure something like this wouldn’t happen again? “Well, an accountability review board led by Ambassador Thomas Pickering and Admiral Michael Mullen, two men with seriousness of purpose and no partisan agenda, helped answer those questions. They found serious management and leadership failures at the State Department. Bipartisan reports from the Senate Homeland and Intelligence Committee

In the years following World War II, there was a severe housing shortage in the city. At the same time, memories of the hardships of the Great Depression of the 1930s were still fresh in most people’s minds. These conditions led to the erection of housing projects in various areas of The Bronx designed for low income working class families. One of these housing projects was sited in the northeast Bronx bounded by Adee, Yates, Burke, and Bouke avenues. Although it was to be eventually called Eastchester Gardens, the first residents referred to it as the Eastchester Project. At the time, the surrounding area was very suburban. The single family homes shared their spaces with empty lots filled with bushes, grass and trees. The relatively high rise red brick collection of apartments seemed to loom over the neighborhood, although many of the structures were no higher than apartment houses found elsewhere in the borough. Just a few blocks to the east was the Gun Hill Road station of the Dyre Avenue subway line. So sparse was the population of the area that each train

consisted of only two cars, and the line terminated at the 180th Street Station where commuters had to transfer to the White Plains Road subway line to continue their journey downtown. Children of the families in the Eastchester Project were enrolled in PS 89 at Mace and Paulding avenues, quite a hike away. After the eighth grade, they went to Evander Childs High School on Gun Hill Road and Bronxwood Avenue, which was a bit closer. At the playground on the project’s property, children borrowed handballs, tennis rackets, or board games to use for play with each other. All of them were to be returned at the end of the day. Children could also skate or bicycle on the roadways. Adults sat at the park benches sited throughout the grounds conversing with each other, reading, or listening to portable radios. No one was allowed to step on the manicured grass. Rooms were set aside in the project for teaching various things to residents or for meetings and health immunizations. The apartments were new and the buildings maintained. It was a great place for a family to live and their children to grow up.

New CSAIR Course: Do Not Covet On Wanting More in Rabbinic Thought Come and explore the richness and complexity of the Biblical prohibition against coveting in a series of classes at the Conservative Synagogue Adath Israel of Riverdale (CSAIR) on Thursdays, May 15, 22, 29 at 7:45 pm. Among the topics to be considered are: Can feelings or desires be legislated? What’s wrong with wanting more? What kind of desiring is ‘good’ and what kind is ‘bad’? How much stuff is enough? The course will explore all texts in the original Hebrew and in translation. Students of all levels are welcome and lively discussion will be encouraged. The course will be taught by CSAIR member Eric Fisher. For more information on this program - which is free and open to all - as well as other adult education opportunities at CSAIR, call the Synagogue office at 718543-8400 or visit the synagogue website, www.csair.org. Rep. Engel: We can’t give up on the unemployed

Congressman Eliot Engel, a senior member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, said a better-than-expected monthly jobs report shows that the labor market is continuing to improve, but noted that long-term unemployment is still a problem for approximately 3.5 million people who have been out of work for six months or longer. The U.S. economy added 288,000 jobs in April -- surpassing analysts’ expectations for 210,000 new jobs -- while the unemployment dropped to 6.3 percent, its lowest level since September 2008. ‘The economy is clearly showing signs of improvement, but long-term unemployment remains a problem. There are millions of Americans who are willing and able to work. There’s simply not enough jobs out there right now.’ ‘House Republicans refusal to allow an up-or-down vote to extend unemployment insurance -- and their insistence on blocking President Obama’s jobs package -- is hurting our economy. We shouldn’t be quibbling with each other over extending unemployment insurance. Too many individuals and families are counting on us to get this done.’ Congressman Engel, and other members of the House Democratic Caucus, signed a letter to Speaker John Boehner

in March requesting an up-or-down vote to extend unemployment insurance for the 2 million Americans who lost their coverage since the program expired on December 28th.

CSAIR Book Group to discuss ‘Special Cases’

Conservative Synagogue Adath Israel of Riverdale (CSAIR) will host a book group discussion of Nathan Englander’s The Ministry of Special Cases on Sunday, May 18, 2014 at 10:30 am. The book follows Kaddish Poznan as he struggles with a son who won’t accept him; strives for a wife who forever saves him; and spends his nights protecting the good name of a community that denies his existence in the heart of Argentina’s Dirty War. When the nightmare of the disappeared children bring the Poznan family to its knees, they are thrust into the unyielding corridors of the Ministry of Special Cases, a terrifying, byzantine refuge of last resort. This program is free and open to all, however, pre-registration is required. To register, please call the Synagogue office at 718-543-8400. The group will be moderated by CSAIR member Sharon Kern-Taub. For more information on this program and other adult education opportunities at CSAIR, call the Synagogue office or visit the synagogue website, www.csair.org. The RIVERDALE REVIEW • Thursday, May 15, 2014

Continued from Page 3 Marines were deployed to protect our personnel. The latest conspiracy theory centers on an email sent at the time. In context, it’s clear that Ben Rhodes, the Deputy National Security Advisor, was concerned about protecting Americans amid a volatile climate around our diplomatic facilities all over the world. Those who want to create a scandal where none exists call this a smoking gun. “That’s not much to go on. “Nevertheless, after more than a year of turning up nothing new, my colleagues want to create a new committee with sweeping powers, a broad mandate, and no fixed timeline for producing any sort of report. “When I heard of this terrible idea to create this special committee, I could not help but think of Iraq, where not four, but 4,000 Americans died. But my Republican colleagues conducted virtually no investigations into that tragedy based

on a lie. They set up no committees to uncover the truth behind the phony intelligence, the torture, the secret prisons, or the spin about how Iraqis would greet us with flowers. Nothing. “So I have to ask a final time, what is it my colleagues on the other side are after? I think the answer is pretty clear. They’re after a political win. They want to tear down leaders in the Democratic party and raise money for their campaign committees, and they’re willing to politicize the deaths of four Americans to do it. “Our constituents aren’t interested in this. They want us to do our jobs, not waste millions of taxpayer dollars on a fabricated scandal. “Let’s do what they sent us here to do. Let’s protect our diplomats and development experts. Let’s work to create jobs and shore up our crumbling infrastructure. Let’s fix our immigration system and promote energy security. Let’s vote no on this resolution and get back to governing.”

The 74-Year Old Freshman If former Councilman G. Oliver Koppell should pull off a remarkable and unexpected upset victory in his challenge of State Senator Jeff Klein, he will head up to Albany next winter as a 74-year old freshman State Senator. Now presumably, grateful members of the “official” Democratic caucus will “reward” him with some kind of leadership post should they take the majority. But a Klein defeat alone won’t insure Mr. Koppell will emerge in the majority caucus. There are still a lot of Republican senators left in New York State, and a goodly number of anxious Democrats who represent districts a bit more ideologically competitive than ours here in the Peoples Republic of New York. And if history tells us anything, it is that Mr. Koppell has become with age, if anything, less adroit in his political wheeling and dealings. In twelve years in the City Council, he managed to be totally ignored within the Council Leadership, achieving only the very unpowerful and unprestigious post of chair of the Mental Health Committee. To put this into perspective, his successor, Andrew Cohen, achieved the same post at the beginning of his tenure that Mr. Koppell rose to after twelve years in power. And to achieve that booby prize, we should not forget how Mr. Koppell sold his political soul to former Bronx County Democratic Boss Jose Rivera, refusing to participate in the successful “Rainbow Rebellion” of Bronx Democrats that has led the party from an era of unprecedented corruption into a new renaissance of good government and clean politics. Many members of the Benjamin Franklin Reform Democratic Club remember how in 2008, Mr. Koppell shunned his own loyal protégé, Jeffrey Dinowitz, sticking with Mr. Rivera, standing with other Rivera loyalists such as disgraced former Councilwoman Maria Baez, now incarcerated former Councilman Larry Seabrook and the mildly anti-Semitic and often investigated Assemblywoman Carmen Rivera on the stage of the Loews Paradise Theatre. Two years later, still doing Mr. Rivera’s bidding, Mr. Koppell refused to back the reelection of Ben Franklin Club District Leader Bruce Feld for reelection. This is why there is even any ambiguity about the support of the club for Mr. Koppell. How could Oliver Koppell lose the support of his own club after a half century of support? Well perhaps it is the product of 50-years of bad political decisions, of betrayals, of a consistent failure to listen and take honest, friendly criticism. Also at play is a remarkable lack of loyalty to his friends and allies. For many it is payback time. Now Mr. Koppell has come into what he thinks is a windfall, a raft of tiny contributions that are coming to him from the farleft loyalists of the Daily Kos website. No one should mistake this as a “good” thing. While the only strings attached to this cash is Mr. Koppell’s continued fealty to the highly ideological agenda of the far left, to us this is a remarkable intrusion of outside ideologues into our local politics. Few of the “contributors” live in our district. And frankly we are suspicious of outsiders who think they have an interest in who represents a state senate district that they don’t live in. All of us who live here should resent being told by ideological outsiders with an agenda who should represent US in Albany, Washington or City Hall. That’s why we live in a democracy. That’s why we have elections. We believe that when push comes to shove, Mr. Koppell might see that quietly ending his political career voluntarily, rather than have the voters do it, may well be the best course. Certainly, if he loses the backing of his own club, he should get the message. But if nothing else, Oliver Koppell too often makes the wrong decision, and ends up the worse for it. That has been the story of the past half-century as we have witnessed Oliver Koppell’s metamorphosis from Wunderkind to Has-Been. It is out of respect and friendship that we urge him to step aside. If there is anything sadder than the thought of a 74-year-old freshman, it is the painful Last Hurrah of the candidate who ran in one election too many.

Alvin Gordon must be kidding

To The Editor: This letter is in response to Alvin Gordon, who believes our President and Attorney General are benefiting from their skin color. Is he kidding? What other President has been called a “sub-human mongrel?” What other President has been called an enemy combatant who should be executed (said by a little old

lady, no less)? What other President was called a liar at a State of the Union address? Oh yes, the U.S. went to war in Iraq based on a LIE! Er, Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, and unfortunately, Powell. No other President has been bombarded by such vile, hideous, racist speech! You, Mr. Gordon, are a bigot who hates Black people. If you are Jewish, why would

you hate people who have similar history of slavery, bondage, persecution and murder? Racial hatred is a symptom of mental illness – all of you haters need rehabilitation. Thank goodness there are white people who understand the plight of Black people and who have compassion. We embrace them. C. Brown
