Local political situation heats up As the rumors fly in political circles, observers are waiting for former Council Member Oliver Koppell’s final decision as to whether or not he will challenge State Senator Jeff Klein, in the upcoming Democratic primary elections. Koppell is telling friends and associates that he expects to run, but has shied away from a full commitment, letting several self-imposed deadlines pass, including one highly publicized Easter Sunday target date. Koppell, 73, out-of-office for the first time in years, was forced into retirement due to the city’s term limit law afterserving twelve years in the City Council. This followed stints in the State Assembly, a brief stint as State Attorney General and even a term as President of Community School Board 10. Koppell was elected to fill a vacancy as State Attorney General by the State Legislature but lost the election to keep the post in 1994. Four years later, he lost a comeback bid to regain the post. Should Koppell run, he expected to set off a war within the Benjamin Franklin Reform Democratic Club for its support. Despite an association of over 50 years with the

group, it is considered likely that Koppell may be rejected by the club membership. It is almost certain that Klein has already nabbed promises of support from Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz, once considered Koppell’s protégé, Congressman Eliot Engel and Councilman Andrew Cohen, recently elected to succeed Koppell. “This could rip the club to shreds,” said one observer. Klein already has the backing of Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr., Bronx County Democratic Leader Carl Heastie, City Councilman James Vacca and Assemblyman Mark Gjonaj. Meanwhile, New York City Comptroller Scott M. Stringer announced his support for Adriano Espaillat in the NY13 Congressional District, which covers parts of Kingsbridge, adding to a string of high-profile endorsements for the veteran state legislator this month. Espaillat is trying to unseat Congressman Charles Rangel, the 44-year incumbent in that post. “Adriano is a proven fighter in our State legislature, and I am proud to endorse his candidacy,” Stringer said. “He has worked hard to maintain

our affordable housing stock, to help small businesses shine and to fund our children’s education. In Congress, I know he will listen carefully to the community on every decision he makes. He will be the unifying voice for the 13th District.” “I am honored to have the support of Scott Stringer, who was born and raised in Washington Heights and has been a longtime champion for our community,” Espaillat said. “Scott is a true reformer who has focused his career on building a strong middle class and fighting for our city – as a state Assemblyman, as Manhattan Borough President, and now as New York City Comptroller. Our City needs federal funding and support in order to thrive. In Congress, I will work with Scott to pass legislation that grows small businesses, increases funding for NYCHA, and gives New York the resources it needs to remain the safest big city in America.” Stringer’s endorsement is the latest benchmark of growing support for Espaillat, who has earned the backing New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito; the Transport Workers Union

Senator Jeff Klein and Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz presented 35 orchids from the New York Botanical Garden’s annual Orchid Show to seniors at the Riverdale YMHA Senior Center. Every year, the Botanical Garden reserves 35 orchids for one non-profit in Senator Klein’s district. The constant presence of Dinowitz at Klein’s side is thought to reflect the political reality that Dinowitz is prepared to abandon his long-time alliance with Oliver Koppell and will throw his support to Klein.

Manhattan College athletic chief will retire at the end of current semester By LINDSEY BURNS Come June, longtime Manhattan College Athletic Director Bob Byrnes will retire with 26 years of service under his belt. Byrnes has overseen the entire athletic program and is also involved in everything from hiring to scheduling with the MAAC conference, to making sure that Manhattan College athletics is represented the right way. Because he is so involved with just about anything sports related at Manhattan, Byrnes has formed strong relationships with his co-workers and athletes and has made a significant impact on many individuals. “I have really enjoyed working with Bob,” said Dr. Shawn Ladda, a professor in the department of

kinesiology and a faculty athletic representative. “How I think he’s made such a big impact is with student-athletes. He has been an outstanding mentor, coach and teacher to so many student athletes,” Ladda is not alone in the high praise for Byrnes. Men’s soccer Head Coach Jorden Scott also had many positive things to say about him. “Bob’s the type of person that makes you feel good,” Scott said. “He makes you feel like you’re a million dollars. You could be losing games, you could be having the worst season of your life and he just makes you feel like you have a chance. Throughout my time with him as an assistant

Manhattan athletic chief to retire

Bob Byrnes While he cares about the school’s sports records, he also values the athletes as students as well. Byrnes wants his athletes to do well in their classes first, and then do well on the field. “When you have an athletic director in the department that, even though we never went to a NCAA Tournament, recognizes the academics, recognizes the behavior and commitment in the players, recognizes the success on the field and in practice, it’s huge,” Scott said. Besides being an excellent athletic director, Byrnes is also simply a good person who people just want to be around. “Everyone knows him,” Scott said. “He has that aura around him that when he’s walking toward you, you don’t know whether he’s going to ask you how your team has been doing or just smile and hug you.” Continued on Page 9

Continued from Page 1 and head coach, you sit in a room with him, no matter the issue, no matter the success or what we were planning or what we were doing, he is always very positive.” For Byrnes, the thing he will miss the most about working for MC is simple: the people. “It always revolves around the people: coaches, players, the competition,” Byrnes said. “If you’ve competed in something it’s kind of in your blood and when you take competition and the camaraderie that exists out of competition away, there’s a little bit of a void.” “It’s a lot easier to do your job when you have great supporters and I enjoyed that,” Byrnes said. “The other thing is of course the players. Our athletes have really done well academically and graduated at a high rate and it’s something I’ll always be proud of.” While Byrnes thinks this highly of his co-workers at Manhattan, others believe that it is Byrnes who best represents these values. “I think he’s a very caring individual,” Ladda said. “He embraces the Lasallian mission and puts student-athletes first and wants to make sure that they have a positive experience.” “He really is a man of student-athletes. He has kept them central to the athletic department and wants to make sure that they have a positive experience. He wants to see them develop through their four years and also is committed to them beyond Manhattan College. He writes them references and tries to help mentor them so they can be successful in their careers.” For Byrnes, the student-athletes are always top priority. Sometimes it is so easy to get caught up in wanting to win games and only caring about the record. For Byrnes, it is different.

The Old Haunted House gave lavish dinner parties and balls in his house. The outbreak of the Civil War ruined Whitlock’s cotton business, the major source of his wealth. He died soon afterward, and his widow sold the mansion in 1867 to a rich Cuban importer-exporter, Inocencio Casanova. Casanova was a supporter of one of the early Cuban revolts against Spanish rule of the island. Rumors abounded that he used the vaults and cellars under the house to store arms and ammunition for the rebels, transferring them at night to ships anchored in the adjoining waters. Although that rebellion failed, Casanova remained in his huge mansion, which he called Castillo de Casanova, until he sold it in 1883. In 1890, it was bought by the East Bay Land and Improvement Company. Determined to establish industry in Hunts Point, they let the house deteriorate. They demolished it in 1904 to make way for a piano factory, and later a part of the Oak Point Rail Yards. Today, nothing remains of the old haunted house. However, its glorious history is commemorated in the streets in the area named for Leggett, Whitlock, Casanova and East Bay.

At the dawn of the twentieth century, children growing up on the dairy farms on Hunts Point shunned what they called the haunted house. Set on a small hill at the mouth of the Bronx River, the huge stone mansion with a Mansard roof and a cupola was clearly decaying. Windows were broken. There were whispers about ghosts and strange noises. Of course, the house itself was never haunted, but it and the land on which it stood had a long history. The property belonged to the Leggett family in colonial days. After the Revolution, the land was divided among several owners until William H. Leggett purchased back part of it in 1830. Leggett erected his home on the hill beside the river and called it Rose Banks. Before the middle of the nineteenth century, he sold it to Benjamin Whitlock, a wealthy New York City grocer who was also heavily involved in the cotton trade. Whitlock enlarged Leggett’s former home, covering the exterior with stone imported from Caen, France. He also dug vaults and cellars beneath the house to store wine. Whitlock had a winning personality, and made friends among his wealthy neighbors. He

The RIVERDALE REVIEW • Thursday, May 1, 2014

Continued from Page 3 Byrnes will never hesitate to let someone know when they are doing a good job, Scott said. “In my four years here, out of everything that I have ever achieved, if you look at MAAC Coach of the Year or a MAAC Championship or a MAAC Final, the biggest achievement I have is a letter that sits beside my bed from Bob given to me in December,” Scott said. “It is a letter that just thanked me for my work in getting the students’ academic GPA up and making sure that there was a little more structure to the program, and the fact that it was going in the right direction, that we were getting success and getting recognized nationally,” he said. “That is my greatest achievement so far and I don’t know how you top that,” Scott said. While Scott only worked with Byrnes for four years, Ladda worked with him for many of his 26 years, as she came to MC in 1994. When asked what his most memorable moment was as athletic director, Byrnes replied with two answers. The first was when the men’s basketball team made the NCAA Tournament for the second year in a row in 1995. “I think at that time people gave us little chance to win, and then we beat Oklahoma,” Byrnes said. “That win over Oklahoma.” The second was when the men’s baseball team made its NCAA Tournament run in 2006. The team went out to Nebraska and beat Joba Chamberlain, who became the Yankees’ No. 1 draft pick later that year. “It was particularly gratifying since our baseball program hadn’t been good in a number of years, so that was like scaling Mt. Everest,” he said. It is easy to recognize when a particular team is doing well record-wise. Often, all of the credit

goes to the players or the coaches, the ones who the crowd can see performing first hand. It is easy to forget about all of the work that the administrative staff does. “I think people look at the coaches and players, and they don’t appreciate the hard work that goes on behind the scenes on every department,” Scott said in regards to Byrnes. “I just think he’s been a great leader for us, he’s been a symbol of our department.” It is difficult to think about the absence that will be felt come June, and incoming Athletic Director Noah LeFevre has some pretty big shoes to fill. Scott was able to sum up what will be felt when Byrnes retires in a few simple words. “He’ll be sadly missed,” he said.

Hebrew Home presents An Illustrated Talk by Len Bernstein

Len Bernstein, a photographer, will present an illustrated talk entitled “Photography, Life, and the Opposites” on Thursday, May 8 at 2:30 p.m. in the Biederman Library at The Hebrew Home at Riverdale located at 5901 Palisade Avenue in the Riverdale neighborhood of the Bronx. This event is free and open

to the public. Please call (718) 581-1596 to R.S.V.P. or email art@hebrewhome.org. Bernstein will discuss what makes for beauty both in photography and in all the arts. Audiences are invited to come hear this inspiring talk about how art can teach people to live their lives to the fullest. Bernstein’s approach is based on this Aesthetic Realism principle, stated by the philosophy’s founder Eli Siegel: “All beauty is a making one of opposites, and the making one of opposites is what we are going after in ourselves.” The photographer will present images from his book Photography, Life, and the Opposites (Delia Press, 2013, with a foreword by Dr. Robert Coles), illustrated with over 70 stirring photographs of daily life. Together with the text they are a means to understanding: What does it mean to have a beautiful way of seeing people and things; a way of seeing that will make us proud? And what stops us from having it? Bernstein began to photograph in 1974. The following year he began his study of Aesthetic Realism in consultations with

Trees planted in Bronx River Forest on Arbor Day

NYC Parks Bronx Borough Commissioner Hector Aponte joined representatives from the Bronx River Alliance, the TD Bank Green Streets program, the Arbor Day Foundation, and second grade students from the Bronx Community Charter School to plant 200 trees in the Bronx River Forest in celebration of Arbor Day. The planting was funded through a $20,000 grant awarded to NYC Parks by TD Bank’s Green Streets program. “I’m pleased to join our community partners and sponsors on Arbor Day to plant native trees that help make the Bronx River Forest a healthier, greener place,” said Bronx Parks Commissioner Hector Aponte. “Many thanks to TD Bank’s Green Streets program for their investment in Bronx parks, to the Bronx River Alliance for their ecological expertise, and to the students at Bronx Community Charter School for being stewards of their natural areas.”

At 10:00 a.m., Bronx Parks Commissioner Hector Aponte accepted a $20,000 grant from a TD Bank representative on behalf of NYC Parks. Following the presentation of the grant, approximately 50 students, 10 TD Bank volunteers, and the Bronx River Alliance’s Conservation Crew began their ecological restoration efforts in the Bronx River Forest. The group planted approximated 200 pin oak, sugar maple, and persimmon tree saplings and mulched areas around the planting site. The saplings will prevent the encroachment of invasive species, thereby improving the health of the forest. ‘TD is excited to award a TD Green Streets grant to this exemplary municipality for its commitment to expand local urban forestry projects,’ said Diana Glassman, Head of Environmental Affairs for TD Bank. ‘The ongoing partnership with Arbor Day Foundation aligns with our environmental commitment to help strengthen and sustain the communities where we live and work. Together, we can make a long-term, sustainable difference.’ The Green Streets grant will fund projects that improve wildlife habitat and restore the Bronx River Forest. The projects, led by the Bronx River Alliance, will engage local volunteers in the process of building long-term stewardship for the Bronx River.

Sitzkrieg on the Hudson, Revisited

Back in March, we editorialized on the delays and dithering surrounding the potential candidacy of Oliver Koppell, who is considering a run against State Senator Jeff Klein. Much of what we said then bears repeating now, bwcause, as we move into May, the delays and ditherings continue. Rather than simply admit he’s preparing a challenge State Senator Jeff Klein, former City Councilman Oliver Koppell continues to engage in a silly charade. Still being used as justification for his challenge, Koppell keeps waving that phony petition generated through the left-wing MoveOn organization. No one should take this seriously. This is a “petition” that can be signed by anyone, and as we shall see, anyone has already signed. Our society has a way to determine the degree of support an individual really has out there, and it is called an election. Trying to drum up support in a mock election for a candidacy that doesn’t exist is a waste of time. It appears that of the signers thus far, perhaps less than 15% may actually live in the district Mr. Klein represents. All this is reminiscent of the “phony war” during the first months of World War II. As Klein racks up legislative accomplishments, Koppell is engaging in a Sitzkrieg charade. So when Klein became the point man for the State Senate finding the money for Mayor DeBlasio’s Pre-K program “loyalist” Democrats were fuming, as when DeBlasio himself came to The Bronx to personal praise Mr Klein for his efforts. And Klein found the funds without the need to raise taxes, rightly an anathema to Governor Cuomo and anyone who wants to see New York’s economy emerge from decades of decline. We wonder where these “loyalists” were when Koppell bolted from the Democratic Party in 2009 to endorse the Republican candidate for mayor over the Democratic Party choice, William Thompson? When another issue emerged, the vote on the State Senate floor on the proposed DREAM Act, to allow students brought to this country illegally by their parents to get financial aid, it left ex-Councilman Koppell sputtering. Senator Klein, the co-leader of the Senate, made good on his promise and got the bill brought to a vote on the Senate Floor. It failed by two votes. Koppell blames Klein. But all five members of Klein’s Independent Democratic Caucus voted for the bill. The Republicans did not, nor did two Democrats, the real reason the bill failed. And in fact the entire episode demonstrates just how shallow the case is against Klein. Even if he and every member of the I.D.C. were members of the “official” Democratic caucus, the bill still would have failed. We suggest readers check out an essay written by State Senator Ruben Diaz, Sr., who is a distinguished clergyman and the father of our borough president. In praising Klein’s leadership, he implies that perhaps the “official” Democrats would be better off accepting Klein as their leader. If anyone is to blame for the failure of the DREAM Act it certainly isn’t Senator Klein. But in presenting himself to the voters as a more skilled legislator, Mr. Koppell stretches the truth. In twelve years in the City Council, the only legislative “accomplishment” he can legitimately point to was the passage of the bill that overturned the twice-expressed will of the people by giving Mayor Michael Bloomberg – and himself – what many felt was an illegal third term. Actually, the dummy petition driven charade that is occurring may open a window into what is really happening. An examination of the names begging Mr. Koppell to run includes scores of non-residents, including some even from out of New York State. We don’t need billionaire George Soros to orchestrate campaign to tell Bronxites who should represent us. The last time a rich outsider came to The Bronx to tell us how to vote, he left us with State Senator Gustavo Rivera, a recent advocate of actions that support the Boycott, Divestiture and Sanctions movement against Israel, a movement that many feel is nothing more than thinly disguised anti-Semitism. Also represented is a lady who has held a number of high positions in a political organization with deep roots in a past we are better off forgetting, the Communist Party of the United States, and led its New York State affiliate. She now writes for the online publication that proudly notes it is the direct descendent of the little missed Continued on Page 15

Obama and Holder benefit from their color

To The Editor: Let’s talk about racism: Several weeks ago, Attorney General Eric Holder appeared before the House Judiciary Committee for an oversight hearing at which he was questioned by Representative Louis Gohmert, a Texas Republican and a former Chief Justice of the Texas Court of Appeals. Gohmert could not understand why Holder would provide documents to terrorists’ lawyers but would not provide information sought by Congress in various investigations, such as Operation Fast and Furious which had led to the death of a border patrol agent (among others), and for which Holder’s stubborn non-compliance had led the Attorney General to be cited for contempt. Gohmert, during his questioning, commented that “Contempt is not a big deal to our Attorney General,” to which Holder angrily responded, “You don’t want to go there buddy.” To which Gohmert in turn replied that Holder was making virtually the same arguments to avoid disclosure that Richard Nixon had made during Watergate. Attorney General Holder was so upset by this interchange that at a meeting of Al Sharpton’s Na-

tional Action Network later that week, he bitterly complained to his largely black audience that this treatment of him by the House Committee Republicans was evidence of the “unprecedented, unwarranted, ugly, and divisive adversity” faced by him and President Obama and implied that he had been disrespected because of his race. After all, he asked, “What Attorney General has ever had to deal with that kind of treatment? What president has ever had to deal with that kind of treatment?” My answers to his two questions are as follows: Attorney Generals Janet Reno and William French Smith were both held in contempt of Congress, and John Mitchell of Watergate infamy was sent to prison for 19 months — and they were white. As regards presidents: throughout the history of the United States culminating with George W. Bush, presidents (possibly with the exception of George Washington) have been viciously attacked and ridiculed, both verbally and in print — and they also were white. After Eric Holder’s whining outburst at the Congressional hearings, the usual vicious charges of racism were immediately spewed out by such Demo-

cratic Party attack dogs as Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Elijah Cummings, etc., and their compliant shills in the media. To these rabid partisans, neither President Obama nor Attorney General Holder should ever have their policies and actions subjected to scrutiny. And unfortunately, to a great extent, their loud and phony cries of “racism” have kept many people from speaking out or asking questions. Let me point out that during the 2008 Democratic Primary battle between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, no other than even Bill Clinton, jokingly referred to as “our first Black President,” was branded a racist by Obama supporters. To the Obama zealots, if you disagree with Obama or Holder for any reason at all, you are automatically branded a racist. After five years of Obama’s presidency, I can accurately state that the president has proven to be inept, incompetent and ineffective. The man is all style with no substance, an emperor without clothes. Furthermore, he is an inherently dishonest person, a serial and brazen liar. Remember that infamous promise, “If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor. Period…” The only reason Mr. Obama has escaped serous scrutiny all these many years is because of his color. He has been given a free pass because of the fact that he is our country’s first black president and that white people and the media do not want to be called racists. From the very beginning, President Obama has benefited from his skin color. Just consider that he took office on Jan. 20, Continued on Page 15

Sitzkrieg, revisited

Continued from Page 14 “Daily Worker,” the official newspaper of the CPUSA. As she and other signers rail at Mr. Klein for his “disloyalty” to the Democratic Party, it is worthy of note that at last look, she had enrolled in the Working Families Party, and is thus not even eligible to vote in the Democratic Primary. Other signatories include a number of current and past members of a group called the Mosholu Preservation Corp.. which publishes the Norwood News. This is all well and good, until you realize that Mr. Koppell diverted tens of thousands of your taxpayer dollars to fund that group, whose executive director and another signatory to the petition, Dart Westphal, according to government records, was paid a hefty salary of $148,370. This gives the concept of “pay to play” a whole new meaning. You pay and they play. No wonder they are shedding crocodile years over the forced departure of Mr. Koppell from public life. The gravy train is no longer pulling into their station. Back in March, we challenged Mr. Koppell to go ahead and run. Let’s hear an airing of the issues and let the real voters decide in a real election. No more delay and dithering. Show us what you’ve got, and let Mr. Klein do the same. End the soap opera.

Obama, Holder

Continued from Page 14 2009, accomplished nothing in the area of world affairs, but yet was awarded the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize for 2009. Do you really think a white president with a similar record of non-accomplishment would have received that honor? Hell no! In the over 200 plus years of this great country’s existence, we have had many mediocre white presidents. Unfortunately, our very first black president, Barack Obama, falls into that category. Hopefully, our next president will be of higher quality. Alvin Gordon

ighty percent of American Jews today are descended from men and women who decided to leave Eastern Europe and seek fortunes elsewhere. Jews were far from the only group emigrating from Eastern Europe, but they were seven times more likely to leave than your average Russian and three times more likely to immigrate than a typical Pole. In this lecture reBecca KoBrin, Columbia University historian, explores: Why did so many more Jews decide to leave Eastern Europe? What pushed them to leave their places of birth and venture across the seas? How did they finance their trips?
