Scandals rock RKA and PS 24 A probationary gym teacher at the Riverdale/ Kingsbridge Academy who was fired from her position has filed a lawsuit seeking her job back in Manhattan. She now claims that her problems began when she refused to enter into a three-way sex encounter with another gym teacher, Sofia Memos, and her husband. It was Memos who filed the complaint against her which ultimately led to her dismissal. Teacher Carisa Gaylardo was fired for what was termed an inappropriate relationship with a student that was substantiated by a large number of text messages going back and forth between

Gaylardo and a female student who she said she was “mentoring.” Only the number of messages, not the content was found to be problematic. Gaylardo insisted that she didn’t know of Memos’ involvement until her hearing, when she says she finally linked the complaint against her to what she said was her spurning of Memos’ proposition. This story got the Riverdale school huge negative coverage throughout the country and even abroad. The city’s Law Department will now review the case. Meanwhile, according to David Peña, a

spokesperson for the city’s Department of Education, charges that interim acting Assistant Principal Manuele Verdi of P.S. 24 made improper use of school procedures to garner mileage points on his personal credit card for expenditures made for the school. “The allegation that Manuele Verdi used his credit card to buy school supplies for PS24 and received mileage/bonus points as a result of the transaction was found to be substantiated. He received a letter of reprimand for this. He is still serving as interim acting AP,” said Peña in a statement emailed to the Riverdale Review.

Bronx Dems back Espaillat, end long-time support of Rangel On Monday, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr., Bronx County Democratic Chairman, Assemblymember Carl E. Heastie (AD -83), Assemblymembers José Rivera (AD-73), Jeffrey Dinowitz (AD-81), and Victor Pichardo (AD-86), and New York City Councilmembers Andrew Cohen (CD-11) and Richie Torres (CD-15) announced their support for Adriano Espaillat in the NY-13 Congressional Primary. Today’s endorsements come just days after Senator Espaillat participated in the first debate of the campaign in Harlem where Congressman Rangel stated he was apprehensive about representing The Bronx. “I am proud to announce my support today for Adriano Espaillat in his bid to represent the 13th District in Congress,” Ruben Diaz Jr., Bronx Borough President said. “In the State legislature we worked together to fight for environmental justice in our community, to bring expanded healthcare options to our boroughs, and lead the charge for truly affordable housing in the City. Adriano is a proven fighter in our community and I know he will give our residents a strong voice in Washington. I look forward to working with him on his campaign and in Congress on these and so many other issues our residents face.” “For residents of The Bronx there is no stronger advocate than Adriano Espaillat,” Carl E. Heastie, 83rd District Assemblymember said. “Adriano has walked Fordham Road, he knows the struggles our local businesses face and I know he will listen and act when our community speaks. Adriano is a proven fighter and he will carry that tradition on in Congress.” “I proudly endorse my friend and colleague, Adriano Espaillat, to be our next Congressman from the 13th district,” Jeffrey Dinowitz, 81st District Assemblymember said. “We have worked together for over 15 years, so I know firsthand that he is hard working and effective. He will fight for the people of The Bronx and for every neighborhood throughout the district. He will bring together and unite the diverse communities in every corner of the 13th CD. His strong, energetic leadership will serve us well.” “Too many families in the Bronx are struggling to find a decent job and pay the rent,” City Council Member Ritchie Torres said. “Adriano Espaillat will bring new economic opportunities to our borough and fight to help Bronx residents living below the poverty line. That’s why I am endorsing him for Congress and will work hard to make sure his campaign is successful.” “I am truly humbled to have the support of the Bronx County Democrats,” Adriano Espaillat said. “The 13th

District spans a diverse community in Upper Manhattan and The Bronx and with their support I know I can unite the District in the fight for affordable healthcare and housing, thoughtful economic development and environmental justice. In Congress, one of my first actions will be to open an office in The Bronx – for far too long residents have had nowhere to turn to be heard by their Congressmember – that changes week one. Together, we will give a voice to thousands of Bronx residents who have been forgotten in Washington, I thank the Bronx County Democrats for their support

and I am ready to continue to fight together for our community in Congress.” Espaillat seems to be outpacing his rivals with key endorsements from the Transport Workers Union Local 100, New York City Council Speaker Melissa MarkViverito, Senators Brad Hoylman (SD-27) and Gustavo Rivera (SD-33), Assemblymembers Karim Camara (AD43) and Gabriela Rosa (AD-72), Council Members Mark Levine (CD-7) and Ydanis Rodriguez (CD-10), the Barack Obama Democratic Club of Upper Manhattan, and the Democratic Club of El Barrio & East Harlem.

Manhattan College staff question coach retention By NATALIE SULLIVAN and CHRIS CIRILLO Chairs of departments within the School of Arts have demanded an explanation from President Brennan O’Donnell regarding his statement released Monday, April 7 to announce Steve Masiello’s path to reinstatement as head coach of the men’s basketball team. An email circulated amongst faculty in the school of arts on Wednesday, April 9 requesting that the president meet with faculty to explain his decision to offer Masiello a path to reinstatement. In a letter sent to faculty on Friday, April 11, O’Donnell explains that the decision was made because “[O’Donnell] determined that the information taken as a whole was consistent with the coach’s claim that he had earned his degree, and therefore did not intentionally misrepresent his record on his application.” “None of this absolves the College of its responsibility to have verified Mr. Masiello’s credentials when he was hired. During the hiring process in 2011, we did conduct a criminal background check and a standard examination of his record but did not include confirmation of the validity of the degree as part of that report. This was a serious mistake on our part and one that will not be repeated,” read the letter sent to staff. O’Donnell declined to comment on record about Masiello’s path to reinstatement. Some faculty in the School of Arts think that this letter is not enough and continue to call for a meeting with O’Donnell. “The letter did not explain what factors were relevant in the decision, the reason why relevant constituencies, why the students, the faculty, the staff and the athletic committee were not consulted, or how we apply this decision to future policy matters,” said Robert Geraci, associate professor in the religious studies department.

“”It is possible that President O’Donnell made the correct decision in this matter, but it is hard to justify that decision given the problematic situation in which this unfolds,” Geraci said. Professors question how this mistake could have been made both in Masiello’s hiring in 2001 as assistant coach and again in 2011 when he was hired as head coach. “The president’s letter doesn’t even mention the fact that Mr. Masiello had also applied for the assistant coach position in 2001,” said Joseph Fahey, a professor in the religious studies department. “If we had the same background checks in place back then, and my memory tells me we did those checks many years before, then Mr. Masiello did not intentionally mislead the College back then, either,” Fahey said. Due to the implications of the mistake as a major flaw in the system of fact-checking when hiring staff at MC, some faculty are calling for a thorough outside investigation of the college’s failure in Masiello’s academic background check. “Common sense dictates that a full and thorough investigation is completely implausible if it is left in the hands of the same administrators who blundered in the first place,” said Ricardo Dello Buono, professor and chair of the sociology department. “We will never have the complete facts surrounding this case until and unless an independent investigation is conducted,” Dello Buono said. Many professors voice their concerns on the message that the decision to offer Masiello a path to reinstatement may send to prospective and current students about MC’s status as a Lasallian institution. “It is hard to imagine that this decision won’t be continuously rehashed by sports commentators if the basketball team does well under Masiello’s leadership,” Geraci said. I expect that the issue will remain on the

The following was just sent out by the Governors’s office: GOVERNOR CUOMO SIGNS LEGISLATION ADDING NEW YORK STATE TO THE NATIONAL POPULAR VOTE COMPACT Governor Andrew M. Cuomo signed legislation sponsored by Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz that adds New York to the list of states that have joined National Popular Vote compact. Under this interstate agreement, member states will award their electoral votes for president to the candidate that receives a majority of the national popular vote. “With the passage of this legislation, New York is taking a bold step to fundamentally increase the strength and fairness of our nation’s presidential elections,” Governor Cuomo said. “By aligning the Electoral College with the voice of the nation’s voters, we are ensuring the equality of votes and encouraging candidates to appeal to voters in all states, instead of disproportionately focusing on early contests and swing states. I am particularly heartened to sign this legislation as it embodies both in process and substance the Empire State’s tradition as a national progressive leader. Today, in signing this legislation, I am pleased to add New York the to the growing list of states who have joined together to make this reform a reality.” This legislation utilizes New York State’s right under the U.S. Constitutional to award its electoral votes in any manner it deems appropriate (Article II, Section 1). With Governor Cuomo’s signature, New York pledges to award its 29 electoral votes to the winner of the national popular vote in ALL 50 States plus the District of Columbia, but only to take effect once enough other states have passed identical legislation so that the compact possesses a majority of the Electoral College’s 538 votes. New York provides a significant step towards this marker, as the compact now contains 165 of the necessary 270 electoral votes (61 percent). A federal constitutional amendment is not required to affect this

table for as long as Mr. Masiello is the coach.” “My fear is that the reinstatement assures students that educational priorities are second to athletic, and perhaps other, priorities,” Geraci said. “I do not know how I can tell my students that they must be relentlessly honest in their work, vigorously pursue their academic potential and be fully aware of their own actions.” “If Mr. Masiello had a season record of something like five wins and 23 losses would he be shown mercy or would justice be the measure that was used instead?” said Fahey. “The moral yardstick that was used here did not stem from ‘virtue ethics,’ but rather from ‘consequential ethics,’ the end justifies the means. This sends a terrible message to our students and I believe insults the Lasallian heritage of Manhattan,” Fahey said.

Governor Andrew M. New York provides a significant step towards this marker, as the compact now contains 165 of the necessary 270 electoral votes (61 percent). A federal constitutional amendment is not required to affect this change, as

Article II, Section 1 of the United States Constitution provides states the plenary power to award electoral votes in any manner they choose: “Each State shall appoint, in such manner as the Legislature thereof may direct, a Number of Electors…” Currently, like 47 other states, New York uses the winner-take-all method in which the winner of the popular vote in New York State receives all of its electors. This method was used by only 3 states in 1789. The National Popular Vote legislation adheres to the basic principles of fairness in elections. Under the current winnertake-all system, Presidential candidates are able to ignore reliably Republican and Democrat states, like New York, and focus all of their attention and resources on a select group of battleground states. Therefore, candidates have no reason to focus on the many issues that matter to millions of New Yorkers across the state. The current system artificially divides the country into red, blue, and swing states. New York is a victim of this system – despite ranking 4th in the country with over 13 million eligible voters, New York ranked dead last in Presidential campaign spending. By signing this legislation, Governor Cuomo seeks to guarantee that every vote in every state will matter in every presidential election. New York continues to be a national leader for institutional change, as the National Popular Vote compact is significantly closer to becoming effective and ensuring an even greater democracy. Senator Joseph Griffo said, “The National Popular Vote is a move to empower voters. If people believe their vote is meaningful, this will create more interest and excitement in our political process. Joining the compact gives us leverage over presidential candidates. Collectively, we say: You can no longer take our states for granted. You can

no longer effectively disenfranchise millions of Americans by ignoring us. And you can no longer assume our vote is yours. I’m pleased we’ve received bipartisan support on this bill and I believe we’ve put forward something that is both Constitutional and also reflective of the need for a more modern approach in electing presidents.” Assemblyman Dinowitz said, “In our world’s greatest democracy, the candidate with the most votes is the winner of an election, except for the most important office on the planet: President of the United States. New York now joins the growing number of states that have decided that the winner for President should be the first place finisher. Once the National Popular Vote is passed in enough states it will mean that the winner of the popular vote will always be the winner in a presidential election. It will mean that every vote from

every voter throughout the country would count equally. Candidates would have an incentive to campaign all over the country, not just in the battleground states, and they would address the issues of concern to voters throughout the country. This would drive up turnout. And New York would no longer be ignored. We will no longer be a bystander in presidential elections. This legislation, signed by Governor Cuomo, is one of the most significant reforms in the election process in the United States in the history of our republic. I am proud that it received bipartisan support in both the Assembly and the State Senate.” The bill has now been enacted by 11 jurisdictions possessing 165 electoral votes – California, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington.

Easter and Passover, 1940 Every Spring Easter and Passover usually overlap. For Christians, Easter marks the occasion of Christ’s resurrection. For Jews, Passover celebrates their freedom from bondage in Egypt. In 1940, Bronx Christians shopped for new Easter clothes. Blumstein’s Department Store at the Hub presented Easter print dresses for $2.99 each, Spring coats for $7.99, young girls’ Easter coats for $4.75, and boys’ two-pants Easter suits for $6.90. Alexander’s at both the Hub and on Fordham Road sold girls’ straw and felt hats for 89¢, girls’ Easter dresses for $1.65, and girls’ better coats for $6.99. For Easter dinner, Teddy’s Food Market at Westchester and Caldwell avenues sold sugar-cured hams for 17¢ a pound, while turkeys went for 19¢ a pound. Krum’s Kandies on the Concourse at 188th Street sold chocolate bunnies from 5¢ to $2.25, decorated eggs from 15¢ to $3.95 and gift baskets for $2.49.

Easter Sunday services were held in churches all over the borough. Special dawn services took place in both St. Marys and Pelham Bay parks, with clergymen from several faiths participating. For Jews, Passover is home-centered with the ceremonial Seder meal. Because special foods are served, Jewish organizations prepared packages of these foods before the holiday to distribute to the needy. The Congregation Adath Jeshurun Sisterhood at 165th Street near Gerard Avenue, the Temple Adath Israel Sisterhood on the Concourse and 169th Street, the Tremont Temple Sisterhood at the Concourse near Burnside Avenue, the Williamsbridge and North Bronx Lechem Association at Adee near Wallace avenues, and the Hebrew Institute of University Heights Sisterhood were among many associations that did their part to make Passover 1940 joyous.

Riverdale Y Environmental Fair 2014

On Sunday, April 6th, he Riverdale Y hosted our annual Environmental Fair from 10AM to noon on the back deck of the Y. Since the turn of the century, the Riverdale Y’s commitment to greening the facilities and participating in greening efforts throughout the community has grown. This year iss no different. At the event we featured multiple recycling opportunities: from e-waste collection to recycling workshops (see list below for full roster).

Of ciritical note was the first time participation of upcycled art. Upcycle artist Michael Ferris Jr. displayed his fantastic, larger-than-life wood sculptures and took part in the fair as an educator with activities his artwork, his process, and the beauty of upcycle art. His artwork provided a perfect balance to the recycling and activity drive of the Fair. The Y’s Family and Youth Services Department spent the weeks before lending a hand to create banners and signs for the event. At the fair, they hosted a recycling activity for kids, creating bird features out of used milk cartons. The community was represented by the Riverdale Nature Preservancy and Riverfest. Several vendors participated, offering green products for sale. The Riverdale Y partners with NYC’s OROE (Office of Recycling Outreach and Education) and Food and Water Watch for this event, and regularly pursues opportunities to encourage and promote environmental awareness.

Real Lessons from Anne Frank States, in fact a majority of them, are passing anti-bullying laws, almost as fast as they enact new taxes. A few years back, the New York State Legislature, between dodging indictments, found time to address this issue. The State Senate, our own legislative “Keystone Kops,” passed the Dignity for All Students Act introduced by Senator Thomas Duane of Manhattan. The bill would “prohibit harassment or discrimination against students by employees or students while on school property or on school grounds.” The cheering sound you hear in the background is a chorus of New York’s trial lawyers getting ready to bury the courts in a blizzard of lawsuits. Why? Because the bill defines “harassment” as “the creation of a hostile environment by conduct, verbal threats, intimidation or abuse that has or would unreasonably interfere with educational performance, opportunities, benefits, or physical or emotional well being, or cause fear for physical safety.” This is just the kind of vague language that can cover just about anything one child can inflict on another, the kind of thing that children have been doing to each other since the beginning of time. Putting an adult spin on things, the bill “prohibits discrimination based on an individual’s actual or perceived race, color, weight, national origin, ethnic group, religion, religious practice, disability, sexual orientation, gender or sex,” just the kind of analysis that goes through the head of the big kid stealing the lunch money of some puny little kid in the schoolyard. New York seeks to mandate all sorts of educational programs to “prevent” these events. This is nothing new, despite there not being a scintilla of evidence that any of these programs is anything more than a waste of the student’s precious academic time. We’d like to know what exactly New York intends to do to deal with bullies, after it becomes apparent that educational efforts to stop bullying are doomed to failure. In Massachusetts, where a similar law passed, there seems to be a bit of buyer’s remorse. Boston’s Channel 25 News reported that Bay State attorney Sam Goldberg suggests “what we’ve seen as a sort of normal behavior for kids over the years, now becomes criminal.” He reports that “there’s been several cases that normally would be a blip on the radar, the school would take care of it, hopefully contact the parents, but now the school’s afraid to just take care of it in house.” Do we need the police and the courts to intervene here? This is the direction in which we’re headed. Maybe it is time to step back and make it clear that parents, not the schools or the police, have to assume responsibility for the behavior of

their children, and let the schools get back to readin’, writin’ and ’rithmetic. Meanwhile the best Anne Frank lesson that one could have before taking in the performance at the Y is to look on the Internet for a film clip, just seconds long, of the real Anne Frank, hanging out of a window to get a glimpse of a wedding party leaving her apartment building. This is the only known moving image of Anne Frank. You will recognize her immediately. This is a real young girl, not a fictional character. This very promising young life was cut short, and not by anything resembling schoolyard bullying.

Congressman Eliot Engel, a senior member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, said that the March jobs report shows the economy is inching further along towards a full recovery, but chided House Republicans for not doing more to stimulate the economy. The U.S. economy added 192,000 jobs in March and the unemployment rate held steady at 6.7 percent. “The job market is growing steadily, and I remain optimistic this trend will continue in the coming months. But my concern remains with those who are still struggling to find work. Long-term unemployment continues to be a problem that House Republicans continue to ignore.” Over 2.2 million American workers have been cut off from unemployment insurance. Some 72,000 Americans, on average, lose their benefits each week. New York has the second highest rate of

those who have lost their unemployment insurance. “The economy isn’t growing fast enough for the 2.2 million Americans for whom unemployment insurance is a lifeline. Congress needs to do more to help those who haven’t found a job” “Sadly, House Republicans have blocked numerous attempts to allow a full House to vote on extending unemployment benefits. It’s time to vote to extend benefits. It’s also time for the House to consider legislation that would boost the federal minimum wage to $10.10 an hour. It’s shameful that someone working a full, 40-hour week brings home poverty-level wages. House Republicans should stop blocking efforts to help those still suffering from the effects of the Great Recession.”

Engel calls for re-instatement of federal limits

Congressman Eliot Engel (NY-16) says that the Supreme Court’s ruling in McCutcheon v. Federal Election Commission will continue a further increase of special interest spending in elections. “The Supreme Court’s decision to strike down federal limits on campaign contributions will continue to diminish the voice of the electorate. Our ballot boxes are not for sale, nor should our democracy be at the mercy of the special interests who have the financial means to advocate for their narrow agenda.” “The McCutcheon ruling has little to do

with free speech and everything to do with opening the floodgates for large, political donations. I proudly co-sponsored the Government by the People Act in February 2014, in order to reduce the influence of special interests. Our democracy will wither if we cease to be a government for the people.”

Real Lessons from Anne Frank We are pleased that the Riverdale YM-YWHA will soon be presenting performances of the Diary of Anne Frank. We are confident, that with the participation of three local rabbis giving introductions, the recent tendency to trivialize this most important work as an “anti-bullying” lesson will be avoided. What is the issue? Here in New York, teachers and principals now are encouraged to “mediate” bullying incidents, sitting the tortured and torturer down to hash out their differences, as if they were mature adults negotiating a labor dispute. There is a curriculum called “Social and Emotional Learning” that codifies this outlook on instruction away from academic achievement and towards psychoanalyzing the students, and getting them to be good, sensitive citizens. What ever happened to good old-fashioned discipline? How about the principal calling in the bully’s parents or guardian, every day if necessary, to assume proper parental control over their child’s behavior? Can the school really do a job for hundreds of students that a child’s own parents are unable or unwilling to do? Do we need to bring in law enforcement to do a parent’s job? Add to this concern over cyber-bullying over the internet, or by texting on “smart phones.” The New York Times reported that parents are looking to schools to “police” the online activities of students, most of which occurs outside of school. Where does this end? Are parents responsible for anything anymore? Ratcheting up these incidents and bringing in government authorities, seeking underlying biases and motives, as well as educational programs designed to prevent bad behavior before it occurs, is just naïve feel-good nonsense. There is no evidence that these programs work, nor is there any evidence that anti-bullying laws will have any effect on children s behavior. But it will transfer responsibility from individual parents to the state, and is sure to encourage an avalanche of lawsuits against schools when they fail. So ham-handed are the educational programs designed to combat bullying, that they border on the offensive. One such program took place a couple of years ago at P.S. 43 in the south Bronx. The bullying issue was linked in a school play about the Diary of Anne Frank and the Holocaust, a disturbing trivialization of the most horrific events of the last century. Again the concept of “social and emotional intelligence” is the underlying lesson designed to thwart bullying, a lesson driven home at the end of the presentation by the students break dancing to chants of “no more bullying!” It was reported to me by an adult on the scene that the presentation contained not a single line of Miss Frank’s work. In the zeal to make the whole thing “culturally relevant” in an all-minority school, the larger lesson, to my thinking, was demeaned. Amazingly, this was done with the cosponsorship of the Anne Frank Center, U.S.A., located here in New York. It is distressing to see the important lessons, historical and ethical, of Anne Frank’s life diminished with the psychobabble of “Social and Emotional Intelligence,” as part of an anti-bullying effort. One wonders what is going on in the schools. Suddenly, there seems to be very little interest in whether children are learning to read, or to do math, or learn history, science, music and art. No, the big issue of the day here in New York and throughout the nation seems to be “bullying” in the schools. Continued on Page 9

Diary of Anne Frank at Riverdale Y

In commemoration of Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom HaShoah), Riverdale Rising Stars/ Riverdale Repertory Company is honored to present THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK for three performances only: April 26 – 28 at the Riverdale YM-YWHA, located at 5625 Arlington Avenue (just off of Riverdale Avenue and West 256th Street), in Riverdale, Bronx, NY. This powerful dramatization of a Jewish teenage girl’s true account of her family’s experiences during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands is a deeply moving reminder of the atrocities of war and an eloquent testament to the human spirit. In collaboration with local religious institutions, each performance will be preceded by an introduction from a local rabbi. The first performanace will be on Saturday, April 26 at 9pm with an introduction by Rabbi Barry Dov Katz of the Conservative Synagogue Adath Israel of Riverdale. On Sunday, April 27 at 2pm with an introduction by Rabbi Steven Exler of the Hebrew Institute of Riverdale. The final performance will be on Monday, April 28 at 7pm with an introduction by Rabbi Shmuel Hain of Young Israel Ohab Zedek of Tickets are $20 for adults and $12 for seniors and students if purchased online at www.riverdaley.org/annefrank, or $22 for adults and $14 for seniors and students if purchased at the door prior to showtime. Tickets are also available by visiting www.BrownPaperTickets.com. For group sales, please email mraider@riverdaley.org. After World War II and the closure of the concentration camps where 11 million people perished, including one million children, Anne Frank’s notebooks were discovered in the attic where she and her family had been in seclusion from 1942 to 1944. Her father, Otto Frank, had the diary published in Dutch as Het Achterhuls (The Secret). Anne Frank’s account of her time in the “Secret Annex” has since been translated into over 60 languages. She has become a very human symbol of hope in the face of unspeakable horrors. The Diary of Anne Frank, as it has become known in English, was adapted for the stage by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett, and premiered on Broadway in 1955. It received the Tony Award for Best Play, as well as the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The film version was released in 1959, and received eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, and won three awards. A new adaptation by Wendy Kesselbaum ran on Broadway in 1997-1998 in a production starring George Hearn, Linda Lavin, and, as Anne Frank, Natalie Portman.
