Klein forces Montefiore review In this year’s Senate onehouse budget resolution, Senator Jeff Klein (D- Bronx/Westchester) successfully fought for the inclusion of a provision that would increase state government oversight over the location of health care facilities in New York City. Specifically, the provision would call for a statewide review of the geographic appropriateness of a health facility when approving plans for one. The provision would apply to all new projects, in addition

to projects “undertaken within the last State fiscal year,” meaning that the controversial Montefiore project on Oxford Avenue would be subject to a new assessment and approval process. Senator Klein said: “Montefiore’s proposed development never should have gotten this far. That’s why I’m fighting to change the law, create a new review process for project’s like Montefiore’s, and stop this development in its tracks. The Riverdale community has

raised a number of completely valid concerns about the projects location, size and scale, and I am pleased that I could bring these these concerns to Albany and make real progress on a process that could prevent unwanted projects like this one--and others--from being foisted upon Riverdale ever again.”

The language in the one house budget resolution reads: “The Senate maintains that in cities with a population of one million or more, the appropriateness of locating a health facility in a geographic area must be taken into consideration in the process of project planning, including projects undertaken within the last State fiscal year.”

This inclusion in the budget goes to show that when a community like Riverdale has demonstrated grave concerns over the appropriateness of this health facility, Senator Klein listens. The Senate one-house budget resolution was approved Thursday. The 2013-14 must be approved by April 1st.

Local artist celebrates Bronx centennial

Manhattan College seeded as Lucky 13 in NCAA tourney By CHRIS CIRILLO and DANIEL YNFANTE Manhattan head coach Steve Masiello was all smiles as he sat next to his team’s Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference trophy on Sunday evening in a packed Café 1853 on the Riverdale campus, waiting to see whom his team would play in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Nearly 25 minutes into the “Selection Show,” that smile turned into a frown as Masiello found out his team would be a 13 seed going up against a surprising, yet familiar fourth seed: the Louisville Cardinals. Masiello, who was an assistant under Rick Pitino for six years at Louisville, put his hand to his face in disbelief. All he could do was shake his head.

“I’m in shock,” Masiello said. “I’m shocked as I have ever been that they are a four seed.” Manhattan is coming off its first MAAC championship in 10 years, but will face an uphill battle when they meet the defending national champions in Orlando on Thursday night. Many believed the Cardinals – who won the American Athletic Conference after beating Connecticut on Saturday – were a borderline No. 1 seed. “They should be one or two [seed],” said guard George Beamon. “I don’t even understand that, but the bracket works out in any type of way.” “They should be a number one seed,” said point guard Mike Alvarado. “It’s crazy that they Continued on Page 2

The piece is part of an ongoing art exhibit celebrating the centennial of Bronx County. View the photo at http://www.flickr. com/photos/bronxbp/12954760053/. As one of the many events celebrating the centennial of Bronx County, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. has announced that his office will showcase the artwork of lifelong Bronx resident Daniel Hauben throughout 2014. Daniel Hauben, a resident of Van Cortlandt Village who has been acclaimed as perhaps the Borough’s most versatile and prolific painter, has been painting for the past 25 years. Mr. Hauben, known for being a landscape painter, works with oil paint and chalk pastels to depict what it means to live in this world though his artwork. As a painter he has traveled to numerous countries and parts of the United States to capture both the beauty and fragility in both a natural and urban environment.

Daniel Hauben will be showcasing his exhibit, titled ‘Bronx Works,’ at the executive office of the Bronx Borough President throughout 2014. The exhibit includes a full scale reproduction on canvas of his famous 17-foot homage to the Bronx entitled “Bronx Vortex.” This enormous painting captures a panoramic view and the essence of the Bronx’s Fordham Road and Grand Concourse. At this exhibit you will also find other paintings by that artist that illustrates the Bronx in its everyday life. “Daniel Hauben is a true artist. The Bronx is full of life and diversity and Daniel Hauben captures that spirit in his art,” said Borough President Diaz. “One of my favorite paintings from his ‘Bronx

Works’ exhibit is titled ‘Bronx Vortex’ which is a panoramic view of the well known Fordham Road and Grand Concourse intersection. I invite everyone to stop by my office to view Mr. Hauben’s extraordinary work.” “It is an honor to have my work displayed on the walls of The Bronx Borough President’s office as part of the Bronx’s year long centennial celebration,” said Daniel Hauben. “The Bronx is such a beautiful, colorful place that it’s easy to make come to life on my canvas.” To view Daniel Hauben’s exhibit, “Bronx Works,” please visit our office located at 851 Grand Concourse, Room 301, Bronx, NY 10451. Manhattan College to face 4th-seeded Louisville

Continued from Page 1 fell down to a four, but things work out for a reason.” Masiello credits most of his basketball knowledge to Pitino and the Jaspers are a mirror image of the Cardinals. But that won’t help the Jaspers on Thursday. “They’re basically the bigger, better version of us,” Masiello said. “I know what they’re going to do for the most part, but that doesn’t mean we can stop them.” Louisville has won 16 of its last 18 games and has won by an average of 33 points in its past four contests. Manhattan is also winners of five

straight and 11 of its last 12 games. A 13 seed has beaten a four seed in the previous six NCAA tournaments, but Louisville is not your average four seed. They will be a strong pick to advance to the Final Four. It’s not all doom and gloom for the Jaspers though. Despite owning a 3-7 all-time record in the NCAA Tournament, the Jaspers have won a game in two of their last three appearances. In 2004, the last time they made the big dance, they were in a similar situation as they are in now. They were heavily regarded as an underdog against the fifth

seed Florida Gators. Manhattan wound up upsetting Florida and only lost by four to a Chris Paul-led Wake Forest. The Jaspers counted on the likes of alltime greats Luis Flores and Dave Holmes, who also led the team to an NCAA Tournament berth the previous season. This Manhattan team will be looking to replicate the success they had 10 years ago, but it sure won’t be easy. “That’s like playing against our big brothers,” said guard RaShawn Stores. “It’s going to be a good one. Louisville is tough, especially during tournament time.”

After losing to Iona in the MAAC championship by three points in 2013, Manhattan turned the tables and beat Iona by the same margin in this year’s MAAC championship. Photo taken by Chris Cirillo

Manhattan-bound Henry Hudson Bridge Toll Plaza being reconfigured which is dependent on good weather, will take approximately three weeks to complete and is expected to begin Mon. Councilman Cohen gets MTA to offer MetroCard sales in South Riverdale Thanks to Council Member Andrew Cohen, South Riverdale residents no longer have to trek down to Broadway to purchase MetroCards. The Councilman has teamed up with the MTA and the Fresh King Market on Knolls Crescent to extend MetroCard sales to that area of the community. As of last week the Market located at 9 Knolls Crescent is an authorized MetroCard merchant and signage alerting customers of this fact has been placed in their windows. Currently, Fresh King Market is only selling $10 MetroCards which is good for four subway or local bus trips. They would like to gauge consumer interest before purchasing additional orders. “This is terrific news for the residents in South Riverdale. I am pleased to have helped facilitate this development which makes commuting and purchasing MetroCards much more convenient for the community,” said Council Member Andrew Cohen. “Adding additional vendors is another way to make it as easy and convenient as possible for our customers to access MTA services,” said Paul J. Fleuranges, MTA’s Senior Director of Corporate and Internal Communications. “We also suggest that our customers use the EasyPay MetroCard which is linked to your credit or debit card,

and refills automatically as you use it.” “Fresh King Market is pleased to announce we now carry MetroCards for the local neighborhood. We are pleased to service our neighbors and make lives just a bit simpler,” said John Shin of Fresh King Market. Other businesses in the area have previously been authorized merchants but they have not sold MetroCards in several years.

combining two narrower toll lanes into one,” said Bridges and Tunnels Traffic Engineer Patrick Sbano. This is a positive change for drivers since the Manhattan-bound toll plaza not only has narrow toll lanes but a reverse curve as motorists pass through the plaza. Sbano said once the work is finished, cars driving across the bridge in the center lane will feed directly into the new wider lane, eliminating most last-minute lane switching before the toll plaza. Drivers also won’t have to merge into one lane after passing through the toll island once the wider, single toll lane is in place. The work, which is being done in-house by Bridges and Tunnels maintenance personnel, includes removing the concrete islands from the lanes, repositioning and then reinstalling toll lane equipment into

the new wider toll lane, and re-striping the lane once construction work is finished. Project Manager Joe Gugliero said a work zone will be created around the two lanes to be combined and that signs will be in place to safely direct motorists to available toll lanes. The first week of the project involves eliminating the concrete islands from the plaza and may be noisy at times. In order to get the work done as quickly as possible and lessen impact on traffic, some work may occur overnight. “We are very aware of the close proximity of our neighbors in Riverdale and will make every effort to minimize work during overnight hours whenever possible,” Gugliero said. Signs will be in place before the bridge and on the bridge to alert drivers to the temporary traffic pattern that will be in place while the work is being done.

Around the schools... Riverdale Country School

Riverdale Country School is proud to announce its new Class of 1957 Alumni Speaker Series, which aims to bring up to four Riverdale alumni a year to the school to address students, faculty, and fellow alumni. Established through the generosity of Riverdale’s Class of 1957, the Series will next bring to campus former Pennsylvania governor Ed Rendell ’61, who will discuss some of the points he made in his recent book, A Nation of Wusses, at an Upper School assembly on April 8, 2014. The first speaker in the Class of 1957 Alumni Speaker Series was Carly Mensch ’01, a playwright who has also written for TV, most recently for season 6 of Nurse Jackie. Carly addressed the Middle School in late January and also met informally with Upper School students in acting and film classes. Her speech, along with all future talks included in this program, can be found on the Riverdale website, www.riverdale. edu, under Alumni News & Events. Jennifer Pahlka ’87, the founder and executive director of Code for America who is currently on leave while serving as the United States Deputy Chief Technology Officer for government innovation, will be the final speaker for the 2013-14 school year, addressing the Riverdale community at this year’s commencement exercises on June 10. Planned future speakers in the Class of 1957 Alumni Speaker Series include NBC News chief foreign correspondent Richard Engel ’92, New Zealand “serial entrepreneur” Kaila Colbin ’91, renowned photographer Clifford Ross ’70, and retired NFL running back (and consultant for the Dallas Cowboys) Calvin Hill ‘65.

According to Head of School Dominic A.A. Randolph, “The 1957 Speaker Series is a dedicated program committed to bringing Riverdale alumni speakers to campus to share their experiences with the community through broad lectures as well as more specific engagements with individual classes. Existing programs — such as the Reginald E. Zelnik ’52 Memorial Lecture and the Jan Falk Carpenter ’71 Lecture — attract noted individuals to campus annually and are well-attended by students, parents, and alumni. However, these programs are not specific to alumni speakers. Adding lectures that spotlight alumni will provide the entire community singular occasions to connect with and learn from one another.” Ron Murison, chair of the Interdisciplinary Studies Program, has been instrumental in arranging all of the lectures. “It is a pleasure to work with the Alumni Office to contact alumni whose careers have led them in many different—and interesting—directions, and to invite those alumni to share their stories with our current students, faculty, and other members of the Riverdale community.”

Improving Woodlawn Heights Soon after Woodlawn Cemetery was created in 1863, the area north of it began to be “improved” for residential use. In the 1870s, some farms were sold and divided into house lots. Construction was encouraged by Edwin K. Willard when he created the Woodlawn Building Association. Willard also donated land on 237th Street between Kepler and Katonah Avenues to build the Woodlawn Heights Methodist Episcopal Church, which was dedicated in 1876. The church moved into a new structure at 241st Street and Katonah Avenue in 1913, and is now known as the St. Luke’s United Methodist Church. The first school in Woodlawn was opened in a house on the south side of 238th Street between Kepler and Katonah Avenues. It was used until a school was built in 1893. In the 1890s, New York City began building the second Croton Aqueduct through Van Cortlandt Park to the west. A number of the laborers on the project were Irish who settled down in the little village. Thus, the area north of 236th Street west of Oneida Avenue became known for a time as Irishtown. Meanwhile, the Episcopalians organized in Woodlawn Heights. In 1897, they held

their first service in a storefront on Webster Avenue and 234th Street. In 1901, St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church was completed at 238th Street near Katonah Avenue. By the 1890s, with the population growing, there were two civic organizations established by Woodlawn residents. In 1895, they merged to form the Woodlawn Heights Taxpayers and Community Association. The small area at the edge of the city was often neglected. Streets remained unpaved. There was no firehouse in a neighborhood of flammable frame houses. Despite the nearby aqueduct, there was no running water. No one cleared the snow in wintertime. There was no electricity. In part because of the agitation of this civic organization, a firehouse was built in Woodlawn in 1899, and a bridge was constructed over the dangerous railroad tracks at 233rd Street in 1905. Lampposts were installed, streets paved, sidewalks established. The New York Edison Company was pushed to provide electrical service, and the Union Railway Company was prodded into starting trolley service. The trolley was replaced by a bus in 1922.

BCA launches Bronx Memoir Project Workshops

The Bronx Memoir Project, created by the Bronx Council on the Arts, seeks to develop and collect various (500-1000word) memoir fragments written by people of all ages, races, genders, nationalities and backgrounds currently residing in the Bronx. This will be achieved by deploying memoir writing facilitators to different cultural destinations throughout the borough from March 15 through May 31, 2014. The project supports the creation, distribution and promotion of Bronx oral and written memoirs by Bronx residents. The project’s emerging writers will conduct workshops and interviews throughout the borough and work directly with seniors, teens and families to create, edit and record first person narratives of homecoming and home. Written memoirs will be collected and published in a summer anthology, in both paper and e-book formats, and oral memoirs will be shared online. This project will map the memoirs by neighborhood, street and building and together they will represent moving history of the borough. Information: 718-931-9500 x21 or www.bronxarts.org.

How East European Jewish Women Confronted Modernity

at Riverdale Temple 4545 Independence Ave (at 246th St), Riverdale, NY 10471

Forward Association / YIVO

As part of Manhattan College’s Major Author Reading Series (M.A.R.S.), poet Jane Springer will visit Manhattan College on Thursday, April 3 at 6:30 p.m. An award-winning writer, Springer’s first poetry collection, Dear Blackbird (2007), received the Agha Shahid Ali Prize for poetry from the University of Utah Press. In 2012, her second collection of poetry, Murder Ballad, was published and received the Beatrice Hawley Award. Springer was also honored with a Whiting Writers’ Award, a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Associated Writing Programs’ AWP Intro Award, and the Robert Penn Warren Prize for Poetry. Notable poet Lynnell Edwards reviewed Murder Ballad and called Springer’s work, ‘Fearless in its music, indulging luscious sounds and pounding measures. Traversing the despair of the rural south, [she] exploits the urgency and dread of every keening murder ballad, showing how that cleaving is both our undoing and our salvation.’ The series will conclude with Chris Tusa, author of Dirty Little Angels (2009), on Thursday, April 24 at 6:30 p.m. His debut collection of poems, Haunted Bones, was published in 2006. Designed to engage and expose students to contemporary literature, M.A.R.S. has brought several notable writers to campus for readings and book signings since its inception in 2010. All of the events are free, open to the public, and will be held in Hayden Hall, room 100. M.A.R.S. is co-sponsored by the College’s English department and the School of Arts, in cooperation with the Women and Gender Studies program. For more information about M.A.R.S., please contact Adam Koehler, assistant professor of English, at (718) 862-7546 or adam.koehler@manhattan.edu, or Dominika Wrozynski, assistant professor of English, at (718) 862-7921 or dominika. wrozynski@manhattan.edu.

S

holem Aleichem’s paradigm of Tevye’s rebellious daughters staking out new, secular alternatives to their parents’ traditional culture has had a profound impact on our notions of East European Jewish women’s history. But the impact of modernization was far more complex and varied. Drawing on memoirs and the rich collection of petitions (kvitlekh) to the 19th-century miracle worker Rabbi Elijah Guttmacher, housed in the YIVO Archives, this talk explores some of the very different paths taken by women as they struggled to come to terms with modernity. Lecture presented by glenn Dynner, Professor of Judaic Studies, Sarah Lawrence College; 2013-14 Senior NEH Scholar at the Center for Jewish History

Sitzkrieg on the Hudson The silly season has begun. Rather than simply man up and challenge State Senator Jeff Klein, former City Councilman Oliver Koppell is engaging in a silly charade, using a phony petition generated through the left-wing Move-On organization. No one should take any of this seriously. This is a “petition” that can be signed by anyone, and as we shall see, anyone has already signed. Our society has a way to determine the degree of support an individual really has out there, and it is called an election. Trying to drum up support in a mock election for a candidacy that doesn’t exist is a waste of time. It appears that of the signers thus far, perhaps less than 15% may actually live in the district Mr. Klein represents. All this is reminiscent of the “phony war” during the first months of World War II. As Klein racks up legislative accomplishments, Koppell is engaging in a Sitzkrieg charade. So last week, Klein became the point man for the State Senate finding the money for Mayor DeBlasio’s Pre-K program. And found it without the need to raise taxes, rightly an anathema to Governor Cuomo and anyone who wants to see New York’s economy emerge from decades of decline. This week, another issue emerged. It is the vote on the State Senate floor on the proposed DREAM Act, to allow students brought to this country illegally by their parents to get financial aid. Ex-Councilman Koppell is literally foaming over this. Senator Klein, the co-leader of the Senate, made good on his promise and got the bill brought to a vote on the Senate Floor. It failed by two votes. Koppell blames Klein. But all five members of Klein’s Independent Democratic Caucus voted for the bill. The Republicans did not, nor did two Democrats, the real reason the bill failed. And in fact the entire episode demonstrates just how shallow the case is against Klein. Even if he and every member of the I.D.C. were members of the “official” Democratic caucus, the bill still would have failed. We suggest readers check out an essay written by State Senator Ruben Diaz, Sr., who is a distinguished clergyman and the father of our borough president. In praising Klein’s leadership, he implies that perhaps the “official” Democrats would be better off accepting Klein as their leader. If anyone is to blame for the failure of the DREAM Act it certainly isn’t Senator Klein. But in presenting himself to the voters as a more skilled legislator, Mr. Koppell stretches the truth. In twelve years in the City Council, the only legislative “accomplishment” he can legitimately point to was the passage of the bill that overturned the twice-expressed will of the people by giving Mayor Michael Bloomberg – and himself – what many felt was an illegal third term. Actually, the dummy petition driven charade that is occurring may open a window into what is really happening. An examination of the names begging Mr. Koppell to run includes scores of non-residents, including some even from out of New York State. Also represented is a lady who has held a number of high positions in a political organization with deep roots in a past we are better off forgetting, the Communist Party of the United States, and led its New York State affiliate. She now writes for the online publication that proudly notes it is the direct descendent of the little missed “Daily Worker,” the official newspaper of the CPUSA. As she and other signers rail at Mr. Klein for his “disloyalty” to the Democratic Party, it is worthy of note that at last look, she had enrolled in the Working Families Party, and is thus not even eligible to vote in the Democratic Primary. Other signatories include a number of current and past members of a group called the Mosholu Preservation Corp.. which publishes the Norwood News. This is all well and good, until you realize that Mr. Koppell diverted tens of thousands of your taxpayer dollars to fund that group, whose executive director and another signatory to the petition, Dart Westphal, according to government records, was paid a hefty salary of $148,370. This gives the concept of “pay to play” a whole new meaning. You pay and they play. No wonder they are shedding crocodile tears over the forced departure of Mr. Koppell from public life. The gravy train is no longer pulling into their station. So Mr. Koppell, go ahead and run, and we suspect, lose defending the lost twelve years of your City Council tenure. Let’s hear an airing of the issues and let the real voters decide in a real election. No more games.

It’s time to bring Senator Jeff Klein and the IDC back To The Editor: You should know there is an old saying that you should be careful what you wish for because you might just get it. This means that sometimes we think we want something that will benefit our lives or help us to come out ahead, but when we get these things, they can turn out to be Achilles’ heels and make us feel sorry for ever wanting them. Such is the case with the DREAM Act that failed to pass in the New York State Senate. Its failure to pass caused a huge embarrassment for our Senate Democratic Conference, and the DREAM was taken away from 8,000 undocumented students in the State of New York. It was well known that the votes to pass the DREAM Act in the Senate were not there. We all knew it! But everyone, lobbyists, unions, and “Dreamers,” pressed Jeff Klein to bring it to the floor for a vote, maybe thinking that he wouldn’t be able to do it. You never bring a bill of such importance to the floor for a vote unless you are sure you have all the votes to pass it. You never bring a bill to the floor, only to have it fail.

You should know that it is possible that some of my colleagues planned to use the DREAM Act vote as an opportunity to embarrass Senator Jeff Klein and his fellow Members of the Independent Democratic Conference, which is comprised of Senators Diane Savino, David Carlucci, David Valesky and Tony Avella. It is quite possible that some of my colleagues wanted to press Senator Jeff Klein and the IDC to bring the DREAM Act to the Floor for a vote, thinking that Senator Dean Skelos and the Republicans would never allow it to come to

Don’t be fooled by Koppell fraud

To The Editor: For the past several years, I have been fortunate enough to be represented by Senator Jeff Klein. During this time, Sen. Klein has always been a dyedin-the-wool Democrat with the record to prove it. Just last year, he authored and passed tough new gun control laws, raised the minimum wage, and lowered income taxes for middle class families. That sounds progressive to me. So that is what makes this next part so confusing:

the Floor. This would give some people the opportunity to turn against Jeff Klein and call him all kind of names. It is also possible that many people thought that by Jeff Klein’s failure to bring the DREAM Act to the Floor, it would provide an opportunity to weaken the IDC and its Leader. But surprise, surprise … it all backfired and instead, Senator Jeff Klein and the IDC are today stronger than ever. In fact, they have made a hero out of Jeff Klein. Right now, an interest group in Washington D.C. is circulating an online petition urging former City Council Member Oliver Koppell to challenge Sen. Klein in the State Senate. But having worked with Sen. Klein on issues important to Riverdale and to my Democratic friends, I cannot understand why anyone in our community would want to sign such a document. Further, it appears that most of the people who are signing the petition are not from our community at all. Most of the signers are people from places far from Riverdale, such as Rochester, Buffalo, and even Texas. These are people who not only don’t know anything about Sen. Klein, but they don’t know anything about Riverdale. I think we are lucky to have someone like Senator Klein representing us in the capital and I look forward to working with him for another term. Bring Klein & IDC back Continued from Page 14 were present in the Senate Chamber on March 17, 2014 got a surprise when Senator Jeff Klein managed to bring the DREAM Act to the Senate Floor for a vote, and also as a leader delivered the votes of all the IDC members. We needed 32 votes in the Senate for the DREAM Act to pass, and sad to say, we lost by 2 votes. The vote tally was 29 Nays to 30 Ayes. Two Democratic Senators voted against the DREAM Act. They were Simcha Felder from Brooklyn and Ted O’Brien from Monroe County in upstate New York. All of the IDC Members, I repeat, were united with their leader, Senator Jeff Klein, voting yes for the DREAM Act … and we Democrats were left with egg on our faces. You should know that there are reasons for many of my colleagues to be angry at Jeff Klein and the IDC Members. That is understandable! But we cannot continue to hold grudges. For the good of the Senate Democratic Conference, we should all put our pride aside. By being able to convince the Republicans - even though they all voted against the DREAM Act – Senator Jeff Klein has proven to be a worthy leader. He is someone who keeps his word, and someone who could be of tremendous help for us Democrats to get back into the Majority. That is why the Senate Democrats need to stop attacking each other and instead, work very hard to bring Senator Jeff Klein back into the fold of the Senate Democratic Conference so we can unite and together as Democrats serve New Yorkers better. Ladies and gentlemen, I have fond memories of listening to the late New York City Mayor Ed Koch when he dubbed himself the “Voice of Reason.” In this instance, and in that same spirit, I would like to think of myself as a similar “Voice of Reason” and urge my Democratic colleagues in the State Senate to bring Senator Jeff Klein and the IDC back. We need them now more than ever. Senator Rev Rubén Díaz
