trail building they arEn’t just bike trails Story and Photo: Steve Crowe > When you think about the bike trails around Golden, what images come to mind? Do you think about seemingly endless ribbons of dirt offering buff flow, technical challenges and splendorous vistas? Or do you think of seemingly endless Section 57 forms, Memorandums of Understanding negotiations and grant applications? The former certainly seems more lively and engaging than the latter, but the hard truth is that when trying to paint beautiful trails on a multi-user canvas, the former wouldn’t happen without the latter. The amount of work that goes into trails goes largely unnoticed by trail users. It’s easy to picture the actual physical labour component of trail building—and even that is probably
underestimated. However, 40 to 150 hours are spent by several Golden Cycling Club volunteers long before a tool can be put to the ground. Trails must be walked to determine a route, flagged and then marked by GPS. The GPS data is then converted to the appropriate file type and put on a map for submission with a Section 57 application to have the trail legally approved by the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations. The Section 57 application must be thorough and complete. It takes a minimum of two to three hours just to write. In addition, various stakeholders must be consulted and their concerns acknowledged in the application. These consultations often involve several meetings and countless

emails—all this to simply get a trail in the woods. Try adding a parking lot, a washroom and a kiosk. The meetings, consultations and paperwork seems to pile up endlessly. The Golden Cycling Club recognizes this hard truth and has been responding willingly to the challenges for more than a decade. > The Columbia River Valley is our home. The riverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s headwaters originate in the Purcell Mountain Wilderness Conservancy west of Invermere, and east in the Rocky Mountains. The wetlands are one of the largest in North America. The river meanders along the Rocky Mountain Trench flowing north, finding its way in to the West Kootenays. This river flows ultimately into Pacific Ocean via the US with the highest volume of water of any river in North America. The Columbia River is vitally important for electricity generation for western North America. Its main stream is dammed 14 times; counting its major tributaries it is the most dammed watershed in North America, driving our economy for future generations.
Biodivesity in the river valley is incredible. Migrating birds use the valley to rest and refuel, elk winter in the valley bottom and beavers use the wetlands for protective homes and ponds. The mighty mosquito proliferates to feed upon unsuspecting fishermen and paddlersâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;and provide food for numerous species. We are all connected to this river basin. It has shaped the history of our indigenous populations, we have used it for transportation and to feed ourselves. The blend of art, music, sports and community volunteering is an everyday lifestyle of creative lifelong learning for this family that also puts a focus on fun.

When Dana is not working at the Golden Municipal Swimming Pool or as a liftie at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, her real talent is working with children. Dana operates her own music school and facilitates the Mother Goose program at the Golden Library every Friday morning at 10:30. The Mother Goose program is a free program for young parents to learn a tool box of strategies to communicate and teach everyday skills to children from birth to five through song, story telling and dance.
Troy and Dana met in their early 20s and have been in love ever since. The whole family has a great passion for community arts and sports. The schedule they keep is busy and demanding. Troy is an active volunteer with the Golden Cycling Club and past board member of the Golden Nordic Club. Dana attends many events with Troy and vice versa with Dana’s arts and music events.

Business owners put food waste into dedicated composting bins
commercial food waste Salmon arm restaurants divert food scraps to compost Facility Story Subbmited by CSRD: Carmen Fennel Arm continues to show leadership when it comes to reducing waste,” says Ms. Fennell. > Thanks to the environmental leadership of four local businesses, commercial food waste is being kept out of the Salmon Arm landfill and composted by Spa Hills Farm. “This is a huge step in our Solid Waste Management Plan moving towards zero waste. These businesses took the initiative of managing a huge portion of their waste in a totally sustainable manner. Spa Hills Farm is equipped to compost the entire range of food waste including dairy, meat products and even soiled paper napkins which can’t go into ordinary backyard composters,” says Columbia Shuswap Regional District Waste Reduction Facilitator Carmen Fennell. The four composting stations are located at Table 24, Okanagan College Salmon Arm Campus, McDonalds and the Inner Core Parking Lot,
and Spa Hills Farm is looking to provide the service to other interested businesses. “Coincidently, the Regional District is initiating a study to examine the feasibility of diverting residential and commercial food waste; however these businesses have already begun diverting on their own initiative because they wanted to do the right thing. They really are community champions.” Commercial food waste diversion programs are in place in other Regional Districts such as Nanaimo, and residential food waste diversion is being done in Grand Forks by the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary. Furthermore, many municipalities in BC have begun diverting food waste from the waste stream through curbside collection programs. “The business community in Salmon

GROW A ROW Initiative sprouts again

> Everyone loves fresh produce, and Goldenites are fortunate to not only enjoy terrific growing conditions, but also neighbours who have cultivated outstanding gardening talents. This summer, the Golden Food Bank Society is pleased to run its annual Plant a Row – Grow a Row initiative again. The national program, run in partnership with Food Banks Canada, aids local food banks in reaping the rewards of the harvest from local vegetable gardens. While the program gives pleasure to the gardeners who nurture their crops by providing them an outlet for their surplus produce, it’s equally appreciated by those on the receiving end. “There are so many avid gardeners in Golden, this is a great way to give for those who love to garden,” said Barb Davies, Golden Food Bank director. “It encourages local gardeners to grow a little extra for those in need in the community.” In 2012, the program netted 1600 kilograms of fresh produce, including lettuce, peas, beans, onions, fruits and berries. In 2011,
Blaeberry farmer Henry Larwill donated 150 kilos of potatoes that supplied food hampers for two months. The Golden Food Bank also receives produce grown at the Ruth Wixon Community Garden, run in partnership with the Town of Golden and the Golden Historical Society, with the assistance of Mountainside Gardens, which donates the majority of seeds planted. As well, Grade 2 students at Alexander Park Elementary School have planted seeds donated by Tru Hardware. While people commonly donate non-perishables such as canned and packaged foods to the food bank, they often forget to share items that don’t spoil too quickly, such as bags of potatoes, onions or apples. The food bank also purchases fresh produce from its budget to round out its hampers. Currently, the Golden Food Bank assists about 315 people every month, equalling about 125 households. “That’s four per cent of the population of Golden and surrounding area that accesses the food bank,” Davies said. “One third of
Mimi loves to sing. those are children.” So far this season, local gardeners have already donated some fresh rhubarb. Gardeners interested in sharing their bounty can obtain seed packets from the food bank. Anyone with extra seeds or plants can bring them to the Community
Garden at 812 8th Street South on Tuesday afternoons, when volunteer gardeners are also welcome, between 1 and 3 p.m. “Sharing their passion and hard work makes everyone feel good,” Davies said. “And people are always grateful for fresh produce.”

overhang. I couldn’t believe it! Overhangs that big just don’t exist in this world with grades in the 11s and 12s. > Rain poured heavily at Green Climbers Home, near Thakhek, an up-and-coming climbing destination in Laos. I arrived late the night before with an itch to start climbing as many rocks as possible. Camp moved lethargically, more like a group of sloths than a crew of climbers. Everyone rose from their beds straight-faced, all with the same thoughts on their minds. Will the rock be dry? I put my rain jacket on, gathered
my gear and left the dry confines of camp. After trudging through ankledeep mud, the result of an early arriving monsoon season, I arrived in dry land under what was dubbed “the roof.” My mind was blown. The cave was about 30 metres tall, overhung nearly 20 metres and stretched for at least 100 metres. The potential seemed endless. I took a peek at the guidebook and saw that routes as easy as 11a climbed out the entirety of this
was a 3D adventure, having to reach deep into the holes of the rock to find good parts of the holds and to do really funky toe/heel hooks to hold enough body tension to keep my feet on as I became more and more pumped.
I felt on another planet when I started to climb the first part of the area’s mega classic 12b, Jungle King. Reaching way back over my shoulder to clip the fourth quick draw, thunder crashed behind me. A full-blown monsoon storm had engulfed the area, yet the rock was dry. The wind blew and kept the conditions good enough to keep climbing. Humidity was high, but the rock felt good with the cooling wind at my side.
Before I knew it I was setting up for the crux move of the route, probably more pumped than I’d ever been before in my life. I grabbed a right hand under-cling, stepped my left foot high and fired for the back of a hole above me where there was supposed to be a good hold. I missed, my hand hit smooth rock and I began falling backwards. I hadn’t realized how long it had been since I last clipped, and fell nearly 10 metres before the rope caught me. I looked back at my belayer and yelled. “Ahhhhhhhh I was so close, I’m so puuuumped!”
After making it to the awkward no-hands rest before the final headwall and crux of the route, my mind raced and struggled to believe where I was. Looking back at my belayer some 20 metres away from me, I’d already climbed one of the biggest overhangs of my life. The wind blew and I could hear the sounds of the pelting rain behind me as I tried to slow my breaths before attempting to punch through the top of the route.
I had fallen just a few moves from the top anchor on my first burn on the route. This was the nature of climbing in Thakhek, Laos, a worldclass climbing venue that should be on everyone’s Southeast Asia travel itinerary. The place blew my mind, and I’m sure it would blow yours too! Among my biggest regrets in Asia, is not spending longer in Laos.

on changing the Enviroment Story Kris King Photos: Hellbent Geothermal > With past experience in forestry and having immigrated from England, since 2007 John Mannagh has owned, with his family, Hellbent Geothermal. It’s a full-on family business that is hell-bent on changing the way we think about heating and cooling our homes and businesses. John works on the engineering and installations while his wife, Brenda, is the business manager. Their daughter is a certified driller and their son, Tim, is completing his journeyman plumber certificate. In 1981, while John was taking a GAP year from school and backpacking across Canada, he met his wife and didn’t want to leave. “Canada is a great place to settle down. We both had our careers here and I was in the forestry industry. We also had a business for 20 years. I have always had an interest in alternative energy and working in energy.” A few years ago, John wanted to retrofit his house and convert from propane to geothermal. He was motivated enough to take courses in different places across Canada. In due course, after learning the process he installed the system and it was a success. Soon afterward,
the neighbours called and asked if he could install on their property. Geothermal heating and cooling uses the Earth’s energy to heat and cool a home. There are several installation variations that can be used. However, John says in the end it all does the same thing and usually the cheapest method proposed is the best option. The major system of underground pipes is broken down into three different methods. Two of the systems are a closed loop pipe that carries water and is buried deep enough where there is ability for the earth around it to exchange heat and cool the water. The other drills into an underground aquifer and the water surrounding the pipe transfers and exchanges the heat. Thirdly, there is an open loop system where an open loop system of pipes draws fresh cold water and eliminates warm water into an underground water source. Some systems can even run through an already existing water well. Once the pipe is installed the rest of the process is the same; the water is then pumped through a compressor which, just like your fridge, produces heat and cools. That compressor energy is
then transferred to a furnace system that heats the home and gives you hot water for your hot water tank. The estimated cost recovery takes about four years when compared to fossil fuel or electric heat systems. About every 25 years the compressor should be serviced or replaced. According to John, currently 40 per cent of Canadian greenhouse gasses come from heating and cooling our homes and businesses. Right now, there is a true trend of green conscious home owners who are installing because of the environmental impact, and not necessarily the long-term cost savings. In Europe, this method of heating and cooling has been encouraged in many countries for decades. In North America, the retrofitting costs can seem like a sticker shock at first, however in four years, not having to pay for the diesel tank to fill your furnace means you can start to relax and use the saved money to work on other efficiencies in your home. Currently in Canada, the geothermal industry is represented by the Canadian Geo-exchange which provides courses and advocacy. In the future, John hopes that geother-
mal installations will be a recognised journeyman trade. “We use all the trades, from electrical refrigeration and plumbing to heavy equipment operator. You have to be a jack of trades,” John says. The industry is growing every year in Canada and John hopes for pressure on the Government to implement regulations in favour of geothermal exchange systems for all new construction. > Running can definitely be called a social movement. Pick a cause and you can find a fundraiser regime that fits the bill for anyone’s value system. What’s great about running? It’s an activity that anyone can start at their own level, without having to get into extreme sports. Hollie Tataryn first got into running after kid number two, feeling out of shape and carrying some extra pounds. Five kilometres seemed like an epic struggle. Her inspiration? A dear friend was fighting cancer and she wanted to run in her honour at the CIBC Run for the Cure. With five kilometres achieved, a cathartic realization was embraced. Hollie decided to become a running coach. “I started in Saskatoon coaching men and women, introducing them

to techniques, pacing and many other facets of running,” Hollie shares. “I’ve found it very rewarding. When I moved to Golden, I wanted to start the Couch 2 5K program here. There are many coaches here in Golden who are coaching at medium to elite levels of running. My goal was to help and empower people who are beginners.” The program keeps everyone—fast or slow, fit or non-fit—together and teaches pacing. To start, people run a minute at a time and walk in between. The faster people double back, walking to keep everyone together as a group. A circle approach, if you will, is safe, positive and supportive; particularly with people who have little experience exercising.

barbie wears hiking heels Awesome Adventures of an Average Parent Story and Photo Alison Biles
> For Christmas last year, my fiveyear-old daughter, aka Awesome Girl, finally won the great Barbie standoff. After years of refusing to allow Barbie and her 11 ½ inches of dysmorphia-inducing plastic into my home—with the exception of the ragtag and scary looking collection of hand-me-down Barbies my daughter had managed to accumulate— somehow I caved. I found myself, late one desperate December night, in Toys R Us, standing in front of a giant tower of Barbie Dream Campers and thought, well, at least Barbie is doing something outside. I looked through the little plastic window that displayed Barbie and her camping companions and was
shocked to see that Barbie appeared not to be wearing heels, but hiking boots. Granted, they were fuchsia hiking boots, but they were hiking boots nonetheless. I left Toys R Us, Dream Camper under arm, feeling like a sort of compromise had been reached. Barbie was girly but tough, active and outdoorsy. On Christmas morning, my overthe-moon excited daughter ripped through the many layers of plastic and cardboard packaging, releasing Barbie and revealing the true nature of her shoes and her deception: hiking heels. Barbie was wearing fuchsia lace-up hiking heels. At first I was shocked. Horrified! I felt betrayed;

Barbie can be outdoorsy too
betrayed by Mattel, betrayed by myself, betrayed by this ridiculous toy. Then, the image of anyone, anywhere, even in dream fantasy Barbie land hiking up a mountain in heels became so ridiculous to me that I had to laugh. We live in a community where we are more likely to find women wearing climbing shoes, biking shoes, ski boots and hiking boots than heels. A community where muscular and powerful legs are considered hot; the more bruises and scrapes, the hotter. A community where women are measured as much, if not more, for what they do and who they are than by what they look like. I hope that our community, and not Barbie, will shape my daughter’s ideas of self-image and femininity. I know that what I do, how I view myself and the image of femininity that I present to her, will, in the long run, be her biggest influence. My daughter and I recently had the chance to have a night all to ourselves. No boys, no men, no brother—girls’ night. We ate sushi. We shopped for climbing harnesses. We trimmed our nails very short. We painted her nails and my climbing draws a deep sparkly purple with red thunderbolts on top. We passed
up all of the girly, princess, Barbie boudoir-to-altar movies for the somewhat girly, but so much more witty, mysterious, magical and wise Mary Poppins. Here is a beautiful woman, a kind of maternal super hero, who floats into the lives of a family very much entrenched in gender-specific roles and turns their world upside down. Plus she can fly. Our night managed to include my daughter’s need for girly Barbie hiking heels as well as my desire to show her how to be a girl without compromising or forcing herself into the Barbie mold. Although I can’t fly, it was “practically perfect.”

> Everything started with the persuasive letter I wrote my mom as a school assignment to go travelling. I meant to go somewhere special like Hawaii or Paris but we couldn’t afford it. That was OK, we could go camping in BC. After some Facebook messages we rented a camper van. When we saw the van, my mom and I totally loved it, but inside it smelled weird and I thought it was too small. Paula totally fell in love with it. After packing up, finally, we went on our holidays! We stopped in Revelstoke for a break; we played badminton and ate gelato. We spent the night in Salmon Arm at a crappy campsite and got a very nice view of the mens’ bathrooms. When we got up, it was freezing! Paula went for a shower. She had to pay for it and it was freezing cold! We drove to Kamloops next. We bought klister for cross-country skiing, then went skiing at Overlander Ski Club. We stopped in Pemberton to visit friends, and went downhill skiing at Whistler. It was so much fun! Our tour guide was Eli Tindall. First thing my mom did was a face-plant then had to get her bindings fixed. We got on the 9 p.m. ferry to the Island. Paula
and I saw all the stars in the sky from the deck, they were so clear it was AMAZING! Afterward, I played in the video game zone. Also, I bought a little cupcake necklace and I got a necklace for my mom too. We got off the ferry at Nanaimo and slept at a campground, getting there at 2 a.m. The next day we saw one of my best friends, Shilo, who lives in Lake Cowichan. After visiting for a day, we celebrated Easter with a big outdoor egg hunt. Later, we went canoeing. It was Paula’s first time. What a great day! At French Beach, my mom, Paula and I slept in the van while everybody else slept in tents. Every night, before bed, we went down to the beach. All the stars shone down on us. After a few nights we drove to Botanical Beach. We saw lots of sea animals in the water. It was nice to see the sea water and shells on shore and smell the salty breeze. In Vancouver we went for a bike ride around Stanley Park to Second Beach. Our whole trip we were very lucky with the weather. It was so nice to get out of town. I loved the whole trip! Thank you, Mom!

> Le territoire des marais, marécages et tourbières de la Vallée Columbia couvre une aire qui se répand du Canal Flats jusqu’à Donald et est le plus long sur le continent. Il englobe 64 000 acres et est l’habitat de plus de 260 d’espèces d’oiseaux migrateurs et résidant en toutes saisons. La largeur du marais mesure d’un à deux kilomètres de large. Ces milieux soutiennent l’équilibre écologique et renferment un écosystème complexe et d’une grande importance. Ils diminuent la pollution de l’eau, les risques d’inondations et représentent un habitat inestimable pour la faune. Ils retiennent l’eau pour la libérer lors des sécheresses durant l’été. Certaines plantes ont même la capacité d’absorber des polluants dans leurs racines et assainissant
ainsi les milieux aquatiques environnants. Ils enlèvent de l’écosystème environ 90 per cent de sédiments et toxines aquatiques nocifs. Les marais, marécages et tourbières préviennent le réchauffement de la planète en ralentissant la libération de dioxide de carbone dans l’atmosphère. Il en convient donc que ces espaces ont un rôle primordial et méritent une protection accrue. Quelle est la différence entre les marais, les marécages et les tourbières? Un marais est un milieu sans arbre où poussent des plantes herbacées : graminées (plantes ayant une tige cylindrique et creuse et comportant une arborisation en sa cime), carex (plantes à feuilles souvent coupantes, à tige triangulaire et possédant
des fleurs en épis), roseaux (plantes de grande taille, à tige creuse et rigide et ligneuse) et quenouilles (plantes en forme d’épis brun dont les feuilles rappellent un ruban et de hauteur de trois mètres ou plus). Il se forme dans les bas-fonds calmes des étangs, des lacs, des cours d’eau, et sur les rives riches en substances minérales nutritives. En Amérique du Nord, les marais d’eau douce sont communs et se retrouvent dans plusieurs régions et territoires. Un marécage a comme caractéristique principale d’avoir des arbres qui poussent sur un sol contenant de la vase. Ils se trouvent normalement dans les terrains d’inondation des rivières et dans les bassins n’ayant pas un drainage adéquat. Les marécages
sont souvent inondés selon le déroulement de la saison ou de façon permanante. Une tourbière est un milieu mal drainé comportant des variations de niveau de sol où se forme la tourbe (matière provenant de la décomposition de plantes semi-aquatiques) et composée surtout de mousse. Des arbustes à feuillage et des conifères tels que l’épinette noire et le mélèze y croissent. L’eau qui se retrouve presque à la surface de la couche de mousse, apparaît parfois comme des bassins. Il est important de noter que les marais, les marécages et les tourbières sont fragiles et fluctuent avec l’impact de l’humain sur l’environnement. Prendre conscience de son rôle considérable est un premier pas vers sa survie et sa protection.

Are there Sasquatch? Of course, what a silly question that is. Where are they? All around us, they have nature’s best camouflage which allows them to blend perfectly with any environment. The creature only becomes visible when in need of relieving its bowels—which would explain why eye witnesses report a pungent/unpleasant smell during encounters. But the BIG question is: why isn’t Sasquatch in Kicking Horse Country? There have been multiple reports of sightings throughout the Kootenays and the rest of BC, but the closest to home was in Glacier National Park. Does the mysterious Golden Triangle (see Feb. issue) have something to do with it? Or, maybe the Parson River Monster (see May issue) is a long-time adversary? In 1811, David Thompson reported seeing an ape-like creature while crossing Athabasca Pass; he stated the creature was twice the size of any man, covered in hair, and walking down the mountainside in the middle of a snow storm. Finding the existence of a Sasquatch has been a long sought-after challenge; the creatures rarely leave clues, maybe a footprint, but nothing conclusive. But with reports on every continent—except Antarctica—sooner or later there will be significant proof of a large society of Sasquatch. Have you been looking for Sasquatch?

Ziggy Marley Bringing an essence
of peace and love to golden Story: Pat Legare
> Bringing the true Jamaican colours to Golden earns a big thumbs up to Kicking Horse Culture. I am sure by now everybody in town knows about Ziggy Marley’s upcoming visit to Golden. Ziggy will be performing on June 22 to a sold out Civic Centre. With a bit of a head start in the music industry, Ziggy Marley has been very busy since the early days, from his first recordings in 1979 alongside his father, Bob Marley, to his latest solo album in 2012. Ziggy is still going strong with his involvement in various charities and non-profit organizations all to better the youth of today. I personally find his music to be very much lyric oriented with a very true and honest vibe to it. Ziggy is a strong believer in peace, love and helping each other and it definitely shows when you listen to his music. Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Ziggy really enjoys music for the message it delivers. He actually is a big fan of Green Day’s American Idiot for this reason. He also enjoys African music and loves Miles Davis, which doesn’t surprise me. On a different note, I am curious to find out if he will play his or his dad’s material. I have no preference at all but I think it would be very cool to hear Bob Marley covers since their voices are very similar. I can’t wait to see all the different faces for this show on June 22, the Golden Civic Centre. Should be an interesting crowd. www.ziggymarley.com

> I recently experienced a really awkward conversation about a topic that I really wanted to share. As most of you know, I book artists and produce shows in the Golden area when I have free time. Having been in the circuit for quite some time, now I get all kinds of requests from random bands and artists looking for a venue to perform. Obviously, everybody wants top dollar for the performance and I don’t blame them at all. Life on the road can be very difficult and I understand that. For the most part, I get to discover new bands or re-discover old bands and I must say it’s quite entertaining. But then comes along a band or artist’s email or phone call that just makes you want blow your brains out. So, I recently got an email from a band wanting to book a gig in Golden, whose name I cannot say here. I received a very professional email, it included details on how the band formed, a short bio and a few links to YouTube videos and such. Later that day I had a conversation with that person. He was so nice, very young and obviously new to the music scene. But then, when I got to watch the videos he had sent me, I realized that his band totally sucked. They were off-key; timing all over the place, really bad drumming and the vocals sounded like a cat stuck in a fan belt. So the question that comes up when that happens is, how can I tell this guy his band really sucks without crushing his hopes and dreams? Think it sounds easy? You try it...

> I have to say I feel very fortunate this summer. Thanks to the Local Townie NewsMagazine I will be going to several music festivals in the area. Roots & Blues in Salmon Arm is one of them and I am stoked! This festival is one of my favourites and always has been. The vibe at the Roots & Blues is always magical. I am feeling very lucky to see a great variety of artists that I have seen in Golden in the past, but also many other artists I have never seen perform live before. Top shelf acts sux as Shred Kelly and Five Alarm Funk will give me a great idea of what’s to come at the Golden Sound Festival on Sept. 7, 2013. But then there are acts includin Golden’s favourite Devon Coyote or Skratch Bastid and also Current Swell which I have seen before and cannot wait to see again. All this aside, I think what I look forward the most is to see all these bands I have never seen before—Horse Feathers, Daniel Lanois, Belle Game and The Balconies, just to name a few. The Roots & Blues Festival is going very strong. This year being the 21st year, the event brings in huge talent for everyone to enjoy. Even though the festival puts the emphasis on bringing Canadian talent, rest assured they also bring in world music. The Salmon Arm Roots & Blues festival is a non-profit society on a mission to bring cultural and musical diversity to the community. I hope to see some Golden faces there! > So, I just got off the phone with James Katalyst and I have to say I am pretty pumped about his festival, Motion Notion. This summer will be the second year Motion Notion kicks it off at the Beaverfoot Lodge location. For those of you who have been there before, you know what the deal is. For those of you who haven’t been there before, it will blow your mind. The location is perfect; wicked mountains surrounding the area, best sunsets ever and an incredible lineup for the 2013 event. From July 25 thru the 29th, things should get pretty incredible around the Beaverfoot Lodge while Motion Notion is happening. I just had a great conversation with James Katalyst who is the main brain behind Motion Notion and here’s a few Q & As for you. PL: Tell me who your favourite headliners are this year? JK: Loadstar, Stanton Warriors, Phutureprimitive, Christopher Lawrence, Liquid Stranger and my favourite, Earthling. PL: What kind of vibe is your festival going for? JK: The main atmosphere we are going for is freedom and love. We want people to have the best time possible in a perfect environment. PL: How many employees do you have for your festival? JK: Just over 100 PL: Why pick the Beaverfoot Lodge? JK: Very simple, noise!! We want to make sure people have a great time, but at the same time it has to be done without bothering anybody else. PL: Where did the name come from? JK: In a very philosophical moment 14 years ago, I was looking for something that would involve movement and change of everything around us. PL: Any local talent on the bill this year? JK: Yes, we have Mihajic Touch, DJ Threesixty, the Bass Workshop boys and Wakcutt. > Just as the sunshine this spring revitalized the blood in our veins, come summer the Columbia Valley’s black tarmac veins will be stained red once again; the Albertan plates return. Schools will soon be out, prime weather will abound and summer vacation time will be taken, all translating to a migration of Albertans to Canal Flats, Golden and everywhere in between and beyond. Grumbling with stern resistance, some call this influx of traffic an invasion. The root of this so-called invasion is easily traced. Just three hours east lives more than a million people who, just like BC locals, love to enjoy this nation’s natural treasures—that’s greater than the combined populations of every city and town from Golden west to Kamloops and Kelowna. Between Calgary and here, the mountains are either national or provincial parks, or not real mountains—sorry foothills. While parks are an excellent way to protect and preserve nature, the restrictions on development, building and motorized traffic have kept their capacities and activities relatively constant as Calgary’s popula-
tion exploded and new demands emerged. With Canmore being old news and all, this puts the Columbia Valley at the frontline of the future of Albertan tourism. To the business owner—especially in the service and tourism industries— these visitors make up a significant, sometimes the primary part of their revenue. These dollars trickle throughout our local economies; owners and their employees take this red plated money and spend it here, perhaps saving enough to pay local contractors to build their first home. Seasonal visitors also allow Columbia Valley residents to enjoy luxuries such as resorts, sled and quad rentals or a variety of restaurants, none of which are found in similar-sized but more isolated industry towns. If you want to live undisturbed and peacefully, hide out in Parson and Brisco on the long weekends. Otherwise, put on a pair of cowboy boots and a smile and crank the country music to embrace our neighbours to the east. Just don’t give them any ideas about burying a pipeline to the coast under their vacation home.

Since then, it has turned into a super fun and growing business. The name Three Four Three comes from the telephone exchange of my hometown, Field, BC. As for my photography, it's something I've been interested in from a young age, but until a couple of years ago, did not really pursue my passion for. It has now become a beautiful obsession for me and I cannot imagine life without my camera! I also moonlight as a retail fashionista at Plain Wayne & Jane Boutique in Golden. SECONDARY OCCUPATION: I graduated from the Vancouver School of Bodywork & Massage in January, and I am now practicing in town by mobile massage. I have also been working for Canadian Mountain Holidays for eight seasons to support my love for (heli) snowboarding and

> Patti Shonek is a prolific artist working in a variety of mediums who has found a way to express several forms of creativity in the vibrant cultural scene of Revelstoke. Venturing from the public art spaces to membership-only spaces throughout town, Patti keeps experimenting in clay, paint, graphics and jewelry. From the elements of mixed media, earthy and raw sculptures to spiritual connection to her First Nations' heritage, the influences are apparent. Hers is amazing work. Visionary and experimental sculpture keeps the audience guessing. Functional slab work with great colour lines and stamp accents wiped clean to highlight the imprint is intriguing and playful. Patti's jewelry is chunky, sophisticated and goddess-like. As a First Nations person, Patti delves into her culture and values as she creates. Starting out as a jewellery maker, travelling the world and making contacts throughout the industry, she incorporates expert skills with her re-found love of clay, joining them. Sculpting hand-made beads and pendants blended with semi-precious stones, displayed at Art First Gallery in Revelstoke, Patti has an appetite for creating and challenging her art. At Sangha Bean cafe, her clay sculptures are cool, unique and earth-based. Revelstoke's Visual Art Centre, where Patti maintains her studio, finds her slab work fun and functional. At the
weekly Farmer's Market, Patti and her husband, Satish, sell a vast array of interesting and eclectic work for passersby. Patti also supplies sculpture work out of town to a Stoney Nakoda First Nations' gallery in Alberta and at the BC Forestry Museum. When discussing the process of creating, expression and outcomes, Patti explains, “Everything has energy. Everything is alive. I allow the energy to flow. For me, my spirituality and my blood heritage of being a Cherokee, Choctaw and Scottish have influenced the way I create.” From Celtic and Indian symbolism, Patti's work connects the audience to the natural world and to stories mythical in concept. Her work is unique and inquisitive. Always searching for ways to explore, Patti merges her skills, rather than specializing in just one genre. One field of exploration fuels the next. “When I was a child, I was introduced to pottery and painting,” Patti shares. “I haven't worked with it in years and the love of clay has brought me full circle to work with my hands in a different way. I've also been taking paint workshops through the Revelstoke Visual Art Gallery, which has evolved my painting.” That's right—just when you thought there wasn't anything else, there's

> Every day I experience the endless mountains and valleys of peoples’ illnesses and their healings. It is truly amazing to see what capabilities we have, why we create illness and how we heal. Many physical ailments some of us overcome are nothing short of miraculous. When we heal after being sick or hurt our own body, mind and spirit has done that. It’s a miracle that we have experienced—yes? It is said we are emotional beings having a physical experience and that everything is energy, even our thoughts. Inside us we have channels of energy called meridians. These channels have been proven scientifically to exist. Using MRI imaging and a tracer injected into the acupuncture points, the meridians have been visualized. They run beside our blood vessels connecting each energy system in our body, relaying information to all systems. The channels contain information through high concentrations of neurotransmitters and hormones. They are in constant motion flowing through the entire body, much like rivers flowing through the valleys in the mountains. The information carried tells us if there is homeostasis in our body. If we have a thought, it produces a feeling. Our feelings create a chemical reaction which produces an effect on the cells. This
creates a physical response in our body. For instance, if you feel happy, you feel full of energy and are in a healthy state of being. If you are sad, angry or upset, you lack energy and may become tired and sick. When we have negative, stressful feelings, the chemical response flows through our energy channels affecting cells, organs, body parts and so on. This can cause blockages in the energy system. Emotional stresses cause a reaction in the body which can create sickness or ailments. There are endless modalities to heal the body of physical and emotional stresses. Alternative practice techniques, such as acupuncture or acupressure work with releasing energy blockages. When you consider that any sickness or ailment came from your own body reacting to some type of stress in the first place, you might consider the possibility that we have all the tools within us to heal ourselves. If our bodies can heal a cold or broken bone, shouldn’t we be able to heal anything that goes wrong within ourselves? I see miracles every day when we are able to heal ourselves by changing our emotions. By simply changing our way of thinking, clearing emotional stress, we can heal our physical body.

> As summer begins to show its warm beginnings, it means that we're halfway through the year. That's right, it’s the midway point of the year, and it’s time to do a health check up on your money. Don't know where to start? No problem. Here are a couple of tips to check the vitals. 1. Are you meeting your budget? Of course, the only true way in order for you to know if you are meeting this commitment is if you take the time to sit down and make a budget. There are no wrong answers, but the best way to succeed financially is to have a plan for what you want to do. Have you paid all your debts? Built some savings? Been able to acquire some investments? 2. Negative or Positive? This is a statement in relation to your net worth. If you are paying 11 per cent interest on a credit card, there is no point in keeping the debt in favour of investing into a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) at 2 per cent interest. Pay off your debt and then move forward on developing investments and increasing your net worth.
3. How's your credit? One in three people will encounter identity theft on their credit and it’s not as hard as you would think to have it happen to you. Simply having a similar name to other people will put you at a greater risk of having your credit negatively affected. Bad credit can result in higher interest rates on everything from your vehicle to your house. 4. Reward yourself Never forget that it is important to be wise with your money and to make smart decisions. However, it’s important at times to not be stingy and to give yourself permission to reward yourself. If you have met your goals and you’re on track, allow yourself to treat yourself this summer. A lot of great sport stories result in big turnarounds at the half-way mark. This is because it is easy to make adjustments halfway through something when you know there are changes to be made. But once the game is over, all you’re left with are feelings of coulda, woulda, shoulda. So, spend the time giving your money a health check; you'll be glad you did.

Still, says author Kevin Van Tighem, it’s the bear that worries people the most as they hurtle down the highway driving 100 kilometres an hour. A biologist, naturalist and hunter, Van Tighem spent nearly four decades working in landscape ecology, conservation biology and nature interpretation in Canada’s parks, a career which culminated in his retirement as superintendent of Banff National Park in 2011. Author of more than 200 articles,
stories and essays on conservation and wildlife, Van Tighem recently published Bears: Without Fear, a book that confronts the realities facing these great animals as a result of our ever-expanding human population and bears’ ever-shrinking natural habitat, and which also aims to demystify bears in order to promote a deeper understanding of these powerful yet vulnerable creatures. Van Tighem will share his deep knowledge and insight on bears in a presentation at Bacchus Books on June 15. Hosted by Wildsight’s Golden chapter, the free public event begins at 7 p.m.

Emergency contraception, also known as Plan B, is after-the-fact contraception when there is birth control failure, or unprotected or unplanned sex occurs. Plan B is most effective if taken as soon as possible after unprotected sex, but still provides some protection up to five days afterwards. Local nurses also assist with pregnancy counselling options. The Golden Public Health office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday—closed for lunch between 12 and 1 p.m. To speak with a public health nurse phone 250-344-3001. Not only do April showers bring May flowers, but they seem to uproot all former flames you've been so grateful to have avoided all winter long. I love the smell of spring air and the sound of birds chirping at any time of day, but what I do not love about this new spring season is the fact that I've already run into two of the valley dudes I used to call lovers. Nor do I love the uncomfortable feeling resting in the bottom of your stomach when you run into someone who treated you so unfairly—for lack of a better term—but who still feels the need to grab your shoulder in a certain way to show you he obviously lacks compassion and forgets all that happened between the two of you. Remember when you never apologized for being such an @**hole???? I certainly do!
right? These are things you want to hear from someone who's going to ravage you later (in a more poetic and intelligent way, of course), not from some man who thinks that just because you're getting him drunk, you obviously owe him the courtesy of fulfilling his every desire. It's turned me off towards going out on the town because, someone forbid, I run into one of these buggers and give them a glimpse of my personal life. Can I buy you a drink? Hang out with you a while? Where are your single girlfriends for all my single friends? Can we be alone somewhere? Can I kiss you? What's your boyfriend got that I don't? I don't get to experience the valley dudes because I'm forever fighting off guys who don't have a clue.
And not only do I have those awful and mind-consuming thoughts to deal with, but I work in the hospitality industry where the more I flirt with men, the more money I make. Sounds easy right? Contrary to belief, it really isn't. It takes a lot of energy to put a smile on my face when I'm being hugged by a stranger for the fourth time in a row, and having to laugh at the way he ogles me and tells me about the way I race through his mind. Gross
Do women actually give in to these types of men? There's nothing appealing besides their money, in some cases, and money can't buy you happiness! It will, however, buy you a lobotomy when you remember all of the cheesy pickup lines you fell for on that last one-night-stand you had. Golden girls beware: some boys have cooties—if they treat you like an object, those are probably the ones to stay away from!
