Being silly on purpose is no strange concept to A-Muse Troupe member, John Denham. As a life-long student of the arts and all things circus, John takes his passion for silliness very seriously. “Circus has become my investment into the community,” says John. In 2006, John and his wife, Kristy, made the move from Montreal to Golden, where John worked with a social circus program, Cirque du Monde, a subsidiary of Cirque du Soleil, that focused on the engagement of street youth all over the globe. It was a natural fit for John to continue sharing his passion for the circus when he uprooted his life to Golden. “[In Golden], it started with a presentation that I did at Lady Grey [Elementary School]. That presentation led to a juggling group which ended up being called the Lady Grey Cirkidz and has been running since 2007,” shares John. Cirkidz is a volunteerbased organization that encourages children to use their imaginations while learning new skills and most importantly, having fun! “A big part of investing into a community is investing in youth,” says John. “I like to share my passion and simply have fun with the kids. Being silly on purpose. Being silly in a way that is fun with others and constructive.” When John isn’t walking around on stilts, he also serves on the Kicking Horse Culture Board of Directors. An honour that that has given him an even larger stage to advocate his vibrancy for the arts in our community. And what a spectacle this summer was! With Summer Kicks wrapping up in mid-August to
another successful season of music, entertainment and laughs, A-Muse Troupe rounded out the concert series with a featured performance accompanying the Vancouver blues-folk band, Bocephus King. The self-proclaimed, ‘silly, funky, nutty, gooseberries and cream type fun people,’ A-Muse Troupe recently performed an event in Parson at Apples and Scarecrows. Their next show will follow in mid-October at the Columbia Basin Trust Symposium in Creston, BC. John explains that, “this fall is off the hook [for A-Muse Troupe]. There are opportunities that we will join into; such as workshops with the 605 Dance Collective, Broadway and Motus O’s production of the Nutcracker.” As a result, A-Muse Troupe will wait until spring 2014 to host their next cabaret. I guess we will have to wait a little bit longer! Through their performances, events and cabarets, it is evident that A-Muse Troupe and Cirkids enjoy pushing their audiences’ imaginations while simultaneously getting a few giggles. “Through Cirkids and A-Muse Troupe, I have been able to bond with the youth of a community,” shares John. We will keep training, learning and experimenting while we evaluate the future before us. “It’s a cool day, the bees are not as active today, they usually all just run into your face screen,” says Tyler Tetrault as he mimics the bees’ actions with his finger. Soon enough, we discuss honey bees and why the farming industry has scientists trying to decipher why the hives are collapsing at such an alarming rate. Is it mites, GMO’s, farming insecticides or another cause? Even locally, bees have been the talk of the town, from an artist’s exhibit to the front pages of our newspapers. After our discussion of the declining bee population we continued to un-stack the hives to see their fresh honey comb. Acting on sound advice from his beekeeping cousin Tyson Emery, Tyler and his wife Pam created Kicking Bee Honey. They initially set up a few experimental hives and have grown to 30 hives with hopes to expand closer to 50 next year. Their hives are all around
the Golden area in farmers fields, the sloughs of the wetlands and up in the mountains in cut blocks to gather the prized Fireweed honey. Kicking Bee Honey is not deterred by the big bee news around the world. They predict the demand for honey and its associated products will increase due to the market’s limited supply as farmers retire in droves. Most of the used equipment will be widely available as retiring farmers liquidate their businesses. Tyler explains that the honey has an extremely long shelf life and its end products have many uses. From holistic health treatments that alleviate allergies to wholesome food stuffs like creamed honey adding sweetness to toast and tea. All in all, business looks good and people want honey. The Army Cadets are back from summer camp gearing up for another year of training and looking for adventure-minded recruits to fill the ranks. The Royal Canadian Army Cadets appeal to teenagers craving exciting outdoor activities where their personal limits as individuals and team members will be tested. The hard-core outdoor-oriented will love the challenge and the shy will explore new activities and adventures amongst their peers. “As a shy 12 year old, the Army Cadet program gave me confidence and self-discipline, it made me explore the outdoors and introduce me to a lifetime of community volunteering. The programme ultimately gave me the adventure mindset to be a professional adventure guide and entrepreneur,” says Cadet Instructor, Kris King. Army Cadets is designed for youth aged 12 to 18 who commit to meeting at least one night a week to participate in one of four levels of general training. One weekend a month is reserved for additional adventure training including orienteering, first-aid, camping and survival skills, canoeing, abseiling, trekking and mountain biking. As the youth gain experience, some will be selected for courses in parachuting, white-water rafting and glacier climbing. Army Cadets also have the chance to travel
internationally and earn multiple high school graduation credits. All components of Army Cadets is free, including uniforms, training, certifications and summer camps. It is federally sponsored by the Canadian Forces (CF) along with the civilian oversight of the Army Cadet League of Canada in partnership with a local supporting organization. Cadets are one of Canada’s oldest youth programs with origins tracing back to 1862. Cadets are not members of the Canadian Armed Forces nor are they expected to join the military. While they are introduced to Army activities of the CF and regimental traditions, they are also introduced to many other civilian career choices. The leadership team are regular members of the community who have high level screening to work with youth and who fall under the Reserve Force of the Canadian Armed Forces called the Cadet Instructors Cadre (CIC). The majority of CIC Officers devote years of their lives to the Cadet Program providing Canadian youth with challenging opportunities that are second to none. LAKE WINDERMERE AMBASSADORS BOLSTERED BY COLUMBIA VALLEY LOCAL CONSERVATION FUND SUBMITTED Due to a myriad of strain on Lake Windermere from development and recreational use, the health of the waterway remains a concern for all residents, visitors and relevant government agencies. Recognizing the need for updated scientific data and study, the Lake Windermere Ambassadors (LWA) formed in June 2010. For the past three years, the mostly volunteer-led organization has conducted regular water testing and monitoring of the lake. The Regional District of East Kootenay’s (RDEK) Columbia Valley Local Conservation Fund (CVLCF) managed in partnership with the Kootenay Conservation Program (KCP) provides a portion of the funding for the LWA along with the monies collected from a $20 annual levy of properties in the valley by the regional government. LWA Program Coordinator, Kirsten Harma says the CVLCF was instrumental in getting the Ambassadors started by providing a $18,000 grant. KCP Program Manager, Dave Hillary agrees that the CVLCF has been integral in supporting a wide number of projects in the Columbia Valley that wouldn’t have otherwise received funding. While some funding amounts have been “small,” Dave noted, “Conservation impacts can be substantial.” The RDEK-collected
fund generates approximately $230,000 a year and supports between 6 and 12 projects annually. “It’s been the right amount of money so far,” Dave added. It’s the volunteers who drive the LWA, Kirsten said while riding south on Lake Windermere on a calm, sunny mid-August morning. Operating the boat was volunteer Gavin Jacobs, ferrying her and a volunteer to three designated locations on the lake where the LWA conducts a series of testing: between Fort Point and Timber Ridge (the deepest part of the lake), off Windermere Creek and near the south end of the lake. The strength in the monitoring work is the bigger picture developed over time with a bank of data to consider, she said, “We can look at a number of things over time and then start to peel back the layers.”

There remains a strong need for watershed governance, expanded lake stewardship, monitoring and education, Kirsten said, pointing out Lake Windermere is still a beautiful and healthy lake, even if much of its shoreline has been impacted. “But it’s not going to stay this way on its own,” she cautioned, adding that she is thankful the CVLCF is available to help with the always-difficult-tofind funds for such projects as the LWA. After a few years of doom and gloom, it seems that locally, regionally and internationally the sun is finally starting to come out in the economy. There are obvious challenges yet to overcome but there is no question that things are on the up and up. Does this mean that the season of prosperity is upon us? The start of an economic burst is an opportune time to increase your wealth by following a few simple rules: 1. DON’T LIVE BELOW YOUR MEANS This flies in the reasoning of many advisors but the main idea is to not go on a spend-a-thon. It means that as your income is increasing, instead of increasing your lifestyle, use any surplus funds to firstly pay down debt and secondly to invest or use to build assets. As our income increases so do our spend-worthy habits. However, by resisting the temptation to spend, we will find that the reward outweighs the wait. 2. IMPROVE YOUR LIFE As the economy improves, your career will have the opportunity to do just the same. By increasing your skill level or applying for the latest promotion, both your income and your job-quality will increase. If you are self-employed and your business is thriving;
this is a good time to look at hiring additional staff in an effort to spend more time at home with your family. 3. LIVE A LITTLE If you are making more money, it’s important not to binge. On the other hand, money is meant to be enjoyed. If you see your income rising, be sure to spend a little bit of it on yourself enjoying your life. 4. GIVE BACK If you talk to many wealthy people, you will find that one of money’s greatest perks is to be able to give it away. Generosity, greed, saving and investing are all habits. Building a habit of generosity within your life will give you a legacy that will last for ages. Your life is built on many small habits. I am afraid that Awesome Girl, who has already let go, taken leaps, sometimes landed and sometimes fallen is likely to do so again. As a mother how do you give your son the confidence to leap? How do you stand by and watch your daughter fall? As a mother, knowing the risks and rewards of leaping or not, how do you let go? Recently I was lucky enough to fall. I fell hard. I fell fast. I fell for just the absolute best man that I have ever known. I fell for a man who made me lattes with the same amount of passion that he had for hiking up mountains and then flying off of them. A man who climbed mountains with cedar pitch all over his shorts and climbed masts of yachts in tighty whities. A man who caught and painstakingly smoked salmon into the wee hours of the night, labeling each batch, so I could take some home to my kids. A man with whom I shared the best dance ever, inside my truck, singing our hearts out to “I’ve Had The Time Of My Life.” I did have the time of my life. I fell for a man who thought my smile, gap between my teeth front and center, was perfect. A man who approached everything he did and everyone he met with genuine love. How could I not fall? I did fall and hoped that he would catch me. He could not. More significant than my fall was his. He fell to his death speed-flying off of Mt. Habrich. Over the past
few weeks I have continued to fall hearing stories, looking at pictures and learning more about the way he lived his life. I fell harder and faster into what I thought would be oblivion but then, the overwhelming amount of love he created throughout his life, the relationships he built with friends and family caught me. I landed in the collective arms of a group of incredibly loving and beautiful people. His people. I want to teach my children to fly the way that Jeff did. Maybe not off of mountains with wings made of fabric. In fact, my heart might skip far more than one too many beats if they ever do. I want to teach them to chase after their dreams. I want to teach them to do so with more stoke, fervor, passion and love than I had ever experienced till I met him. I want to treat them with as much open admiration for who they are, with as much silliness and respect as Jeff treated everyone he met and have them, in turn, treat others the same way. I want them to build a world of beautiful people around them, who will love them and catch them when I am not there. I want them to laugh with abandon. I want them to live truly and free. My children never got to meet Jeff. The only way I have to teach them this, to pass along this gift that Jeff has given me is to live that way myself. I will leap, float and fly open-hearted and yes even fall. Through me, my children and all of the people whose lives Jeff Bertoia touched, his “crescendo of awesomeness” will continue to rise. I will teach my children to fly.

THE PUNTER EQUATION THE ART OF TRYING TO KEEP UP KRIS KING You hear words out of your own mouth that make, even you, shutter. Profanity is the only controllable extension of the impending doom of a crash. Time slows down, then speeds up, you hear weird snapping sounds, grunts, umphs and a high pitch ringing in your ears. Your regular heart beat is replaced with a mad race of a jack hammer. If you’re lucky, you get to stand up and pat yourself down, double check for all systems go and then carefully locate the injured body parts. Your buddy is now standing by your side helping you pick up your yard sale of gear. More screams of profanity pass your lips as you discover what’s broken, torn or bruised. If all goes well, a high five becomes a cheer for the epic bail and to confirm that you just cheated death once again. Living in the mountains, injuries are a natural occurrence of our rugged lifestyles. We often swap stories of local trail names, name bomb surgeons like they are on retainer and use our arms and body to exaggerate motions of the events leading up to the climax in our story of the epic fail. Your close group of friends ohh and ahh at all the right moments. After your tale is finished, the game of ‘I bet I can one up you’ soon begins! Whisky is passed around and friends learn from each other’s mistakes. I am extremely lucky with the near misses I have had throughout my mountain-living adventures. Especially the near miss related to a late warning of ‘ROCK!’, followed by the three cubic foot version of that rock hurling directly at me while climbing at the Spillimachen Crags. Not to mention my other great
injuries like falling off my mountain bike while riding a trail bridge, full hand rope burn while belaying, ACL tears, constant shoulder dislocations, torn feet ligments and more. By no means does this represent my ability to learn from my mistakes nor the assumption that I am a great adventure athlete. In most cases all of my injuries or near misses are directly linked to the punter equation - the art of trying to keep up with my friends. Over the past few years I have been on the healing end of a few minor injuries and surgeries. I spend more time healing than playing as friends continue on with their sporting adventures. I find that I suck it up and try to live a normal life against the doctor’s orders. After a while, recounting the now fabled story is getting old and rather annoying. Body parts start to ache, you feel unfit and unhealthy and you’ve missed half the season of play - a dark cloud of depression hits. I eventualy consume my time with reading, indoor projects or in most cases get reacquainted with Jack Daniels and the pretty ladies of Ol’Milwaukee. The next season quickly approaches. I lick my wounds with hesitation. Fear starts trembling in the limbs and adventure begins again with the reliable push of keeping up with friends. I grab my gear and start over again by dropping into my first chute, power stroking through a class 4 rapid and styling that rickety bike bridge. The fear, depression and anxiety is pushed to the back of my mind with the ideas and possibilities of new adventures. Play safe!

Take a glance outside to see the branches crispy red and yellow hairdos succumbing to an entire summer of gravity’s tug. As the leaves drop, temperatures and the sun follow suit making potential outdoor activities as scarce as the deciduous trees the leaves grow on. For skiers, the anticipation builds. Yet, for those who don’t share this passion are left wishing for ways to stay fit, challenge themselves and avoid ending up like a leaf curled and frozen in the fetal position on the lawn. Luckily, a fairy-godmother has granted all three wishes for every Local Townie. If you’ve had enough summer heat and are ready to slide face first on the ice, both hockey and curling offered at the Golden and District Recreation Centre and Golden Curling Club respectively, are great options. For those with fair Kootenay skin unconditioned for cold, there are various indoor sports offered at convenient evening times throughout the winter accommodating all ages and abilities. It doesn’t matter whether you skied like a champ or worked like a chimp all day, there are activities for everyone!
The warm embrace of the Mount 7 Rec Plex is a great place to start. Drop-in co-ed badminton starts October 7 and the diehards will be out Mondays and Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday evenings serve up a good time as the clock spikes 7:00 pm when drop-in co-ed volleyball bumps onto the calendar after Thanksgiving as long as enough folks dig it. To finish off the week, dropin men’s basketball tips off at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday nights. There’s b-ball for kids of all ages too, running Monday to Thursday at 5:00 p.m. Games start in late October but the last chance to register the little dribblers is October 9 in the Rec Plex lobby. Along with these fantastically traditional sports, keep your eyes open for special events like the dodgeball tournament in the spring. If you are typically nervous and break a sweat when meeting very cool people, all of Golden’s fantastic sports offer a perfect perspiration excuse and only cost a nominal fee. Voici certains faits et détails sur l’utilisation des rivières et des lacs canadiens. Annuellement, les rivières du Canada déjettent sept pour cent de l’eau renouvelable du monde. Son débit total est de 105 000 mètres cube par seconde. La rivière Mackenzie, mesurant 4241 kilomètres, est la plus longue au pays. Les marécages, marais et tourbières couvrent plus de quatorze pour cent de l’étendue canadienne et vingt-cinq pour cent des zones humides mondiales. Le Canada possèdent 563 lacs qui recouvrent plus de 100 kilomètres carré. L’érosion glacière a créé un nombre important de lacs dans le bouclier canadien incluant les Grands Lacs. Glass artist, entrepreneur, mother..and this list goes on. Natalie Ruby is all those things and more. From collaborating with two other talented artists, Jen and Casja, to develop an art gallery within Black Star Studios almost five years ago to developing a unique and contemporary line of glass jewelry, Natalie is a busy woman. Her signature piece as an artist starts with a simple yet beautiful piece – a daisy.
Bonnie Bavin discovered and brought to market a new medium - glass bead making. Natalie was hooked. “I really enjoyed doing the art glass blowing, yet it’s physically demanding. Being a mother of two, I wanted something a little more flexible that I can do around my kids safely. Creating pieces with a simple torch out of my home studio or at Black Star is an easy and enjoyable fit for me,” Natalie muses.
“From the first time I started making beads with Bonnie Bavin at Bavin Glass, the daisy just stuck. It was a difficult design to master. Now, years later, I challenge myself with other projects in glass, yet the daisy is something that I will always have as one of my designs,” Natalie shares.
Black Star Studios in downtown Invermere is a lovely and unique take on all things creative. With studios in a retail location where local artists can work from and customers can enjoy watching the beauty unfold, to the hand-chosen art that decorates the walls, a person can feel the immersion into total creativity stepping into Black Star.
Natalie delved into glass blowing 12 years ago apprenticing with Pat and Ryan Bavin at Bavin Glass in Invermere. A family run business,

in an after school program. It’s a lot to juggle and the kids are hard work – yet in a great way. They make some really amazing things. It influences how we see our own work and what we are doing. There is a lot of inspiration there,” Natalie shares. When asked to expand on her inspiration, Natalie mentions, “This beautiful province! I come from a gorgeous valley where natural beauty is everywhere. I start my day with my beautiful children, drop them off at school, make my way down to the local coffee shop, grab a yummy latte and head to the lake with my pup, Diego. It’s usually just the two of us down there, we hang out and enjoy the view….then up to Black Star Studios to create or run the business! LOCAL YOGA FULL YOGIC BREATH DALIA
According to Yoga and Ayurveda, our mind resides in the entire body – not just the head or brain, and the thing that animates the body is Prana; our life force, our vital energy. That’s why anything we do with the body affects Prana and the mind - and vice-versa. Pranayama is the practice of controlling our Prana. Truly, all of our Yoga practice is a training in controlling our Prana but there is a specific set of practices we refer to as Pranayama that are primarily breathing exercises. The breath is the bridge between body and mind and can affect significant changes on both. As an involuntary act, there are ways of focusing and controlling the breath that brings
more awareness and vitality to the body and mind. Some Pranayama practices are energizing, some are calming – each practice targets specific areas in the body or certain faculties of the mind. The most basic breathing practice we use in Yoga is ‘Full Yogic Breath’ or deep abdominal breathing. Sit in any comfortable position and make sure your spine is tall and fairly straight (you can lean against a wall if you need to). Take a moment to relax your shoulders and your face. Focus your mind on the natural flow of your breath – watch and listen to every inhale and exhale for a few moments. Then start taking
deeper, longer breaths. Direct your inhales to the bottom of your belly and let the belly expand like a balloon. Feel how your rib cage expands and your back feels elongated. Don’t force anything; just let yourself take in a big, slow inhale. Then, exhale slowly and fully – let your bellybutton sink back towards your spine. When you think you are done exhaling, exhale a bit more. Again, no forcing, just slow, full exhales. Notice what a few minutes of deep abdominal breaths will do to your body and your state of mind. KK: What is the paddling vibe?
KK: What is the Kootenay paddling vibe?
TB: I’ve white water kayaked all over the world and the vibe among paddlers is always the same: welcoming. I’m an advanced intermediate boater now; however I was brought down the Lower Kicking Horse, likely before I really was ready, only because the local world class boaters are so supportive in guiding and providing safety. When I lived in Chile, my first and best friends were made through white water kayaking. One time I showed up at the Ottawa River and the maker of my boat arrived and ran over to ask me how I liked it. Sure there are some egos at the high level; however I find 95% of paddlers so happy to have more people boating. ...I just question the idiots with surf boards or dingies on the class 3 river without lifejackets, helmets or knives....
TB: There are many world class boaters who live in the Kootenays and many more who travel here to white water kayak. I’ve met a wide range of folks paddling in the Koots, from full time paddlers, raft guides to local everyday professionals who like to give’r after work and on the weekends. The age range is wide; already once this year, I was the youngest on the river! There's a range of river types available in the Kootenays, from big volume, playful to intense creeking that only a few can run. As with everything Kootenay, the vibe is a little more relaxed, that is unless things get serious, then the outdoor adventure skills Kootenay people have are put into action. The challenge in Golden is that there aren’t any close river options for new people to enter the
sport. Many communities around the world see the benefits of having a local white water play park like Fernie and Calgary (Nelson folk have this naturally on the Columbia). TB: I’m not much of a play boater, I’m just starting to creek and it scares the heck out of me. I prefer good volume class 3+ to 4 down river running, which I love finding the best line and using the current. All my sports involve finding the smoothest line, even yoga. The interesting part about the line on the river is it is very dynamic day-to-day and second-tosecond. The community also keeps me coming back!

Being apart of the wonderful crew that put the festival together was without a doubt one of the best experiences of my life. After talking with the performers that were on the bill, I received nothing but amazing feedback. There were sleepless nights, many headaches and a lot of stress but looking back at the Golden Sound Festival I couldn’t be happier with the way the night turned out. With the many obstacles we faced in putting this event together, it was still a wonderful experience and I would do it again in a heartbeat! Being the inaugural event, it was a huge learning experience for all of us. As the night of September 7 progressed, I tried to see every band we had playing in town and it is still difficult to decide which was my favourite. I have always had a thing for Five Alarm Funk and they did not disappoint but JP Maurice stood out the most for me. It may have just been the electric vibe at the Taps when it was all going down or simply their killer performance, either way, it was my favourite event of the night.

As a costume-crazy town, Golden really outdoes itself for the festivities as I am in awe each year with what people dress up as. I will say that I have never seen a town go all out
as much as Golden does for this treat-filled holiday. If you really want to tie one on for Halloween this year, you will be able to go out, not once, not twice but three times. FALL 2013 BIGGEST COMICS REVIEWS TO CHOOSE SEAN TONELLI Comic book fans were treated with a number of special events throughout this summer, while most were fairly lackluser, *cough* Age of Ultron, this fall is looking to pick things up with a number of big name talent hopping on with some great books. Here is a list of the comics I am most excited about and given my clout, you probably should be as well.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: same creator, a new take and one of the best books on the shelves at any given time. It’s a dark, gripping and heart-warming take on characters you thought you knew. Grab a trade as IDW has made them very affordable and worth your hard earned coin. Yet, TMNT isn’t the only hot commodity over at IDW. This fall sees the return of Samurai Jack, the samurai who was transported into the future and must find his way back. Continuing where the animated series left off, which is streaming now on Netflix, Jack takes on ancient evil and robots in a fun filled adventure suitable for the whole family.
With Peter Parker dead, the Marvel Universe has been a rather quiet place. Say what you will about the Superior Spider-Man, the truth of the matter is that Peter is the true Spider-Man and is greatly missed. With the re-launch of Marvel’s adult oriented comics, Marvel Knights, we see the return of Peter Parker as he goes up against 99 of his greatest foes. Written by one of the most daring and imaginative writers working today, Matt Kindt, this is one mini-series that is bound to please.
Neil Gaiman is one of the most influential and powerful writers working today. After a long hiatus from comic books, Gaiman returns to his roots with a prequel to one of the greatest comic series of all time: Sandman. Teaming up with J.H. Williams III, Sandman: Overture is not so much a comic as it is an art piece with early buzz indicating this as the ‘must own series of the year’.
For decades it has been ‘The Big Two’, but now, thanks in part to genius marketing and pure talent, Image Comics has become the premiere independent publisher outshining both Marvel and DC. While the obvious grabs have been around for a while now, Saga, Lazarus and Jupiter’s Legacy, this October sees a horse of a different colour in the form of Kelly Sue Deconnick’s Pretty Deadly. Billed as Deadwood meets Sandman, Pretty Deadly follows the exploits of Death’s daughter as she rides through the brutal western outback looking to escape the shadow of her father.

The lull of the shoulder season is upon us. Summer is over and the anticipation for ski season is only making this time last longer. For some, it is a well-deserved break from the hustle and bustle of summer action and for others, it can turn into a time of depression. As the days get shorter and the weather cools off, it can be difficult to keep your spirits high. So, if you are feeling the shoulder season blues, here are some good tips to ‘keep you walkin’ on sunshine.’
Life is about the people that you spend time with. You will find that most activities can be very unsatisfying when done on your own. Make an effort to meet new people and you will find that life can be more enjoyable. Or even better, spend time with those people that are already close to you and you will get the most out of life. 2. Switch your routine Routine can make us feel like our life is mundane. Sometimes just changing over your routine can make all the difference. Maybe it’s your route to work or what you eat for dinner, but whatever it is try something different and you will jump right out of that funk.

3. Try something new That’s right! Take a class, learn a skill or join a club. Find a purpose Always take time to discover what you feel your purpose in life is. This will help keep everything in perspective. Having a purpose will give you a reason to make good decisions and show discipline in your day-to-day life. Make this shoulder season a time where you truly discover inner prosperity in your life.

STOCK PHOTO I was out enjoying a couple of beverages the other night when a man started conversing with me and so boldly asked if I was married. Normally, I would tell the truth and say no but something about the alcohol coursing through my veins and my lack of enthusiasm toward fending him off once he learned the truth, told me to say yes. I wear my grandmother’s ring on that finger and when I pointed it in his direction as a ‘see, I really am,’ moment, he laughed and asked, “what’s that?” I had a girlfriend who said she would never accept anything less than Tiffany & Co from her future husband. When she finally found her prince charming and she learned that all he could afford was anything allowed to be put on lay-away, she caved. You best believe my friend ain’t rockin' Tiffany! I know a girl who has a rock that's
insured for $30,000 and when it's on her skinny little finger, the diamond usually sits inside her palm as it's too heavy to stay atop her finger. Either that or because she lives in Toronto she needs to keep it hidden from curious eyes looking to traumatize women. My question is this: does size really matter when it comes to soul mates and marriage proposals? Would you turn down the love of your life because he purchases a ring that reflects his budget? I've read that it's typical for a man to spend three months worth of his salary on an engagement ring - this concept disgusts me. How can the most important expense on your agenda be a diamond ring? I want and expect so much more than that; perhaps a house, student loans paid off, a fabulous adventure, a nursery even. If I had to choose between an arrogant rich man or a skint gentleman who
only bought what he could afford, I’d choose the man who would rather promise me a love-filled life and isn't worried about the size of his carats. I can only imagine that the type of man who can afford to give you a big rock doesn't have much time to spend at home; three months salary may involve a lot of over-time. And I know it isn't a worry wandering around the streets of Golden, Invermere or Revelstoke thinking that the shine from your ring may entice thieves to mug that diamond right off your finger but in the big city there's a plethora of eager beavers looking for a victim to rob. Do you want to be that victim? I'd rather a small ring where my only worry, if you'd even call it that, is being laughed at by a man who thinks I give a shit about something as shallow as jewelry. Like my man doesn't love me as much as that jerk because he spends a reasonable amount of
money on my engagement ring? Like we don't have better things to spend our shared-income on besides jewelry? My dream is to elope somewhere like Italy after I've travelled for a month and then travel for another couple of months afterwards: should the symbol of our union represent the sacrifice I'd be making in not having that dream come true? I think not! Don't get me wrong - I'd really like a ring on my finger, besides the one I'm wearing at the moment but if it costs anywhere near three months worth of my man's salary there's going to be a fight and he's going to be taking it back for something more practical.
