RCWG: The Resource Center for Women and Girls is an organization that not only seeks to empower girls through personal development, but also hope by this feat to facilitate positive change in the communities these9 girls live. Ivy Nyawira Wahito came to New York to attend The Commission on Status of Women Conference held at the United Nations. I felt the need to tell the world her story; her personal development at the Resource Center for

Women. IVY: I work with the Resource Center for Women and Girls (RCWG). I joined the organization in 2010 as an intern and also a personal assistant to the director of the organization. And through her mentoring I was able to continue with the organization professionally because I went to school, studied and got a BA in sociology in philosophy. And now I am working full time at the organization. RCWG was founded in 2007 by Zeedah

Meirerhofer-Mangeli, who is the director of the organization. Out of the realization that many households in Eastern Kenya were led by young girls because their parents were deceased. The girls were orphaned due to parents dying of HIV and AIDS. So she observed that girls were not going to school because they were busy caring for their siblings and that is how the idea of the Resource Center for Women and African Girls in Kenya was born. She joined together with another organization, a local ACBO in Machakos, Kenya. They organized the group RCWG in 2010. So the camps are basically run for girls during school holidays for a minimum of ten days. The girls are taught on sexual reproductive health and rights, personal development- which includes emotional intelligence, governance, peace education, and this happens for the period of ten days that they are in the mentoring camps.

Valley Extra Where is the Evergreen/District 8 Grocery Market? By Allez Azul

Evergreen/District 8 is a wonderful family community. We support quality education for our children, work hard, promote good values, and contribute to our community in many ways. However, our vibrant community does not have a quality grocer in the area.

This is somewhat of a mystery. We are a wellinformed and educated community. We exercise, believe in clean air, clean water, and healthy eating. However, there is no market that fits into our lifestyle. Why not? Other areas of San José, and communities of similar values, education, and income have daily options at their local

grocer that include: natural, organic and gluten-free items. Fresh produce, meats, and health foods should be available for us at a neighborhood grocer. Where is our Trader Joe’s, Sprouts, or similar market that would make shopping easier for all of us? We all have busy schedules, but traveling miles in traffic for specialty items

shouldn’t be an adventure in itself. Let’s rally together for a grocery market that will meet the diverse needs of our community. The cultural and ethnic diversity of our community should not be an impediment to our community having a quality grocer. Yes, Lunardi’s was here years ago. However, I ask

you to communicate your thoughts and ideas about a local quality grocer on social media, talk to your neighbors and your local representatives. Let’s get something done. Collaboratively, we can make the positive change we seek in our community. Let’s work together!

Our Corner of The Valley By Scott Taper

The word entrepreneur gets bandied about quite a bit these days. Around these parts it is assumed that an entrepreneur is someone who launches a Hi-Tech or software company. However, the real definition of an entrepreneur is defined by Merriam Webster as “one who organizes, manages, and assumes the risks of a business or enterprise”. Note that there is no designation of

what kind of business that certain some “one” might organize, manage, or assume risks. The corner family-owned grocery, the auto repair shop, and the person who cares for your lawn all have that in common. This reminds me of a Canadian businessman who was helping his son and his friend get started in a business by licensing technology from a research institute. When the papers were completed, he said

proudly that while he had witnessed a lot of brainpower in the room. Then he pronounced that his business only took guts to get it started. I was in that room and I never forgot those words. It takes guts to be an entrepreneur. And maybe it takes a little tequila, too, because in every movie representation of every entrepreneurial success story, tequila shots are somehow involved. Apparently the more tequila one

drinks, the more guts one gets. According to the Huffington Post, tequila is good for the digestive system and doesn’t give you a nasty headache if one chooses wisely. Forbes claims that people who know their tequila are considered a little smarter than others who don’t. This is worth trying (21 and over) because if all it takes is guts and tequila helps your guts, then we should gather at the local watering hole and get entrepreneurial. Please do

let me know how it turns out because I don’t have the guts to try it myself. I still rely on just getting it done the best way I know how. Breaking Boundaries College of Adaptive Arts: Moving Educational Mountains for Deserving Citizens Please come and hear the vision and meet the students at CAA’s Giving Breakfast on Friday morning, May 12, 7:45 – 9am sharp, Scott’s Seafood in downtown San Jose. Also, visit the CAA website to sign up for a weekly tour of the College each Friday class is in session, 1-2pm, www.collegeofadaptivearts.org.

College of Adaptive Arts (CAA) provides an equitable collegiate experience to adults with special needs who historically have not had access to college education. Founded in the summer of 2009 in south San Jose, CAA began with one summer musical theatre workshop class for 12 adults with special needs. Fast forward to the spring of 2017, CAA now serves 90+ students each of its 4 distinct quarters throughout the year. CAA’s fundamental purpose is to give adults with special needs an equitable, lifelong collegiate experience,

and teach them how to be successful contributing citizens through the arts, health, and wellness. The College of Adaptive Arts was founded by DeAnna Pursai and Pam Lindsay. DeAnna, a special education teacher who has a sister with Down syndrome, and Pam, an actress who has a daughter with Asperger’s, are neighbors. They share personal experiences of the distress and dismay of lack of educational opportunities for adults with special needs once they turn 22 and must exit the public education system. The College of

Adaptive Arts was created out of those experiences, allowing adults with disabilities to have an equitable collegiate experience and become successful contributing citizens. CAA serves adults whose path may not be to obtain an Associates Degree at a community college; nevertheless, they have much more to learn and contribute as adult citizens. Over half of CAA’s part-time staff of 23 professors are also adults with differing abilities such as autism, cancer survivors, blindness, and leaders with dyslexia. They have the passion of their artistic trade and the patience

to understand how each student learns. The key accomplishments are numerous and include many personal achievements. This past December 2016 College of Adaptive Arts was a featured Wishbook Charity with the San Jose Mercury News. Additionally, CAA was just nominated for a grant from the CSR Cares Foundation in February, 2017. CAA was recognized by the CA state legislature back in 2010. It received the San Andreas Regional Center Outstanding Community Service award in 2012. In 2013 the CAA student

film crew won Best Television Series at the CreaTV Creative Awards in San Jose. Recently, CAA just received vendorization with the San Andreas Regional Center so that consumers with the regional center can now receive up to 6 classes per quarter free of charge. We are Different. We are Able.

Breaking Boundaries

CAA has 8 Schools of Instruction, including Schools of Dance, Music, Art, Theatre, TV/Film, Communications, Health and Wellness, and our newest School of Science and Technology. Classes are held in 4 distinct quarters throughout the year. Classes regularly rotate each quarter, and there are over 30+ classes for adults to choose from. CAA students are given multiple opportunities to take various workshops, perform in the community, and connect with local organizations, such as City Lights Theatre Company and Chandler Tripp School. The CAA Student Council is active in raising funds for other organizations and raising awareness that people with disabilities are just people with a little something extra. The School of Theatre has a vibrant community partnership with City Lights Theatre Company in which they host professional audition

workshops for the students twice a year. CAA also has a golf team, and a varsity cheer squad, and 7 different performing touring troupes, including Latizmo Hip Hop, Heroes Multi-Age Outreach Dance Troupe, Graduate Ballet Dance, Concert Choir, Children’s Music SingAlong Troupe, Adaptive Guitar, and Speaking with Confidence Student Council Speakers. CAA’s vision is to transplant this new model to operate out of a college campus, being its

own independent entity, working in collaboration with the host campus to share resources, to build a replicable model of equitable education for adults to become successful contributing citizens. The CAA Mountain Mover Leadership Team believes that this new educational model will be as widespread and robust as the national and international Special Olympics model for athletic.

They are taught how to just focus on themselves and not the negative aspect of their lives– not to think about their realities at home because the camp is for them and focus should be on their personal development. We teach them that the fast route is true “transformative change”. PEARL BAENI: Ivy, Where in Kenya is the organization located? IVY: The RCWG ... We are located in Machakos, Kenya, which is the Eastern part of Kenya. It’s known for its aridity and many girls

in that part of Kenya go through a lot of sanitation or have sanitation issues and challenges. Because, of the lack of water. Productive Rights Project. We, also teach hygiene practices, which raises awareness on how to manage their bodies. We have introduced a Productive Rights Project, Ω. PEARL BAENI: Would your organization be interested in outside help? Do you have a website? Can anyone donate to The Resource

alright, Shoot!

Center for Girls? IVY: Yes we are very open to donors and donations and it’s a very open system. We have a website, we have a Facebook page, and we have a Twitter handle. On the website you have bank details, which shows you how to or gives you the details on where to donate the money through wire transfer. We also have a PayPal account if requested. We welcome any donations. PEARL BAENI: So tell me ... Is there a graduation process? And where do the girls go from RCWG when they graduate? IVY: So the camp is run for ... At any particular camp we have 75 girls on board in groups of three: 25 girls per group. So they come repetitively to the camps for three years– repeating the same thing to be able to have them understand and internalize the skills and

We Take Everything! We Do All The Loading! the lessons we teach them at the camp. So after their three years, they graduate from the program and we recruit another group. The ones who graduate, we have programs for them. We have like our FUTURES programs. Those who are interested and those who apply are linked with mentors and are located. Like, for instance, if you want to become a doctor and we have a mentor who is a doctor, we link them for mentorship. And we also have – some of our girls have gone to intern in organizations who are partnering with us. IVY: For example, we had one of our graduates intern at an organization by the name of AFRICOG. It’s a governance organization. It deals with governance and structures and corruption in the country. So she was awarded three months more to her contract for excellent

i DOn’t know. What?

work at AFRICOG. We collaborate with partners to utilize the interns from RCWG to their organization for training. And also for learning purposes. We also had one of our alumni go to another organization– started as an intern. It’s called African Leadership Center (AFLC) and through the internship she applied for a master’s degree, which she got and went on to London for one year and is now working in that organization fulltime. So we have had success stories from our alumni. The Alumni also mentor–they mentor the current beneficiaries because, like I mentioned, they stay in the program for three years. So the ones who graduated come in and also train the newcomers. PEARL BAENI: At what age do they come in and what age do they

leave The RCWG? IVY: They come in at fifteen. They leave at eighteen. So it’s a three-year program. Post eighteen they can come back and give back to the RCWG through mentoring, Through internships they can also apply within organizations for other internships. We send out applications and some come to apply because our team is a make up of all alumni of the beneficiaries. PEARL BAENI: So are the girls just coming from Kenya or they’re coming from Africa – globally? IVY: It’s Kenya at the moment. Entirely Kenya. PEARL BAENI: If each country on the continent had a program like this, oh my goodness ... We can’t stop our girls empowerment for the good of the continent. IVY: Actually one of our visions soon is to start a program for girls outside–well in East Africa if we have the capacity and the resources. I think we can be able to bring in girls from Uganda and Tanzania into the program. PEARL BAENI: Yes, it would be great. IVY: It would be really great. We are hoping to be able to do that soon. But for now we do take girls from all over Kenya. So they do come in and we have a team, our whole team is made up of beneficiaries and alumni of the organization,

including myself. We have two alumni who sit on the board. So it’s um, we believe that the girls we train should be and are good enough to come back and do the work we have done and pay it

forward. PEARL BAENI: And your board is made up of ...? IVY: Not all alumni, but two alumni sit on the board. PEARL BAENI:

Y9Z

That’s great. So, Ivy, you are a brilliant woman and I am so impressed with the training at the RCWG. Ivy: Thank you so much. PEARL BAENI: You speak well, you ... IVY: I have to say that my mentor Zeedah Meirerhofer Mangel is a good mentor. She really is a good mentor and she doesn’t leave anyone behind. PEARL BAENI: That’s true. IVY: Which is one of the ... You know sometimes, you know like ... Even girls at the camp, you know, some fall off the wagon. You know challenges at home, pregnancies, but she doesn’t leave people behind. We’d rather stop with the 24 and go and get that one girl who’s

not, you know, at par with the rest. So you know its the same with us. She mentors us, I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for her. She’s really a good mentor and you can see it in the girls, you can see it in the interns, you can see it in the way they talk, you see it in the way they walk, the way they eat, is ... You know is because of her. She has really done a good job with us. PEARL BAENI: This is, this is such a great program and I wish you all the best and I know–I know that you’re going to carry on this whole program and ... Everything that you’ve learned. And to pay it forward. You’re going to Empower more women and more women…. PEARL BAENI: So happy to have interviewed

Wonder Woman Cont. Interview With Ivy CONT. you. And I wish you all the best going back home to Kenya. What did you get from the CSW (Conference on the Status of Women 2017)? IVY: It was very mind opening for me. Number one, I was able to participate in many of the sessions, because through the participation I gained visibility, my organization gains visibility and some of the questions, mostly I was participating in..was to question the governmentour government. Because people come to CSW and there’s a lot of talking, there’s a lot of language, you know which seems so good on the forefront. But when we go back

home, until the next year, you know nothing is done. It was really eye opening for me and I hope to come back next year and to come back with somebody from the organization, because I feel that it should be ... People should come and see and learn. It’s a good space, even for girls. I attended lots of session where young girls were hosting while panel less and I even challenged our government and questioned them… where the young women representing our country? Lots of side events that I went to. There was ... young women at the tables with pamphlets representing their country. Someone in one of the events said if you’re not

Ivy in front of UN Church Building

on the table you’re on the menu. And I think we should be on both. PEARL BAENI: What about the men? What did the men think about ... I mean do men attend this meeting? (Commission On The Status Of Women) IVY: Yes they do. And people, most women were encouraging men to come and attend because

without men we can’t really achieve equality. And you know the ones who were there were participating. We have to do it together. And you do not have to be a woman to champion women’s rights. So I really feel like it’s a space that more girls should come, and you know…. I hope they can get visas because that was another issue. You know many people, many girls were not allowed visas just because they think they will cross the border and won’t return. One of the things that I know about Zeedah is that her passion for her country runs deep. She loves Kenya. She is committed to this. For her it’s a journey of no return PEARL BAENI: We’re going to close.

This was great, I am so, so happy to have interviewed you to have heard so much about your organization and I’m hoping that this interview would bring more attention to the RCWG. IVY: I really do. Thank you for interviewing me PEARL BAENI: Yes, it was great. Have you stopped daring to hope? At times, our hope in our dreams and plans on this earth to do great things diminish when we don’t see a sliver of success. But don’t let that stop you from believing in yourself. Remember, even though we may not see God, our hope in His love and grace is always there. Keep hoping no matter what.

Community YMCA Safety Around Water Program

What’s going on at your local YMCA these days is just wonderful. Safety Around Water program offers kids a free week of water safety instruction and basic swim lessons. Also known as the SPLASH Program, in 2016 120 children took part at no cost to them.

“It is an honor for us to run this community program every year. On behalf of the swimmers, thank you to our donors, IBM and our volunteers for making this happen.” - Rick Valdez Executive Director South Valley Family YMCA

Our Best Deal Ever!

Parents are thoroughly pleased with this program as another way to engage and expose their kids to new adventures they might not otherwise find available to them. One proud mother says, “I am so grateful that this program is here for the children because they have a lot of fun. They love swimming and don’t know this is helping them learn safety in case of an accident in the future. I’ll keep letting other people know this is available to

us.” Clearly the benefit is more than just the obvious, the children gain confidence in other areas of life as well. Water Safety offers a great opportunity to build friendships (one tadpole can trust

another to have his back or tail) within the group of kids and among the exuberant and capable staff at the local YMCA.
