INSIDE

Christmas Day came with wonderful conditions for those who could break away to enjoy them. Check out the shots online at www.eppicsurf.com/ourwave and find past sessions too.

Are y o u a seagull or a pelican? I Ask a Surfer

sit at the beach and observe a seagull that catches a piece of trash blowing in the wind. Before it can even check it over another seagull snatches it away. As a group of other seagulls see this, it creates a frenzy that goes on and on. A bunch of birds squawking and fighting over something that is absolutely useless. I watch a pelican swoop down with knowledge and grace to catch a fish. Calmly it eats its catch and then flies away. Each pelican, although traveling in a pack, is fishing on its own. When have you seen two pelicans fight over the same catch? The point of this? What can we learn as surfers from Mother Nature and Her simple way of explaining life? As a surfer, use your own knowledge, respect one another, and listen to the ocean. Learn to understand the ocean, her waves, and how she works. But most of all, SURF YOUR OWN GAME.

Some rules to help us all get along....

• Do not surf only where it is crowded ·• When surfing at Bolsa, a beach break with plenty of waves, there are many spots up and down the beach to choose from. Do everyone a favor and S P R E A D O U T !

Seal Beach Surfline C o n t e s t

• Do not paddle for a wave just because you see the surfer next to you going for it. • Do not purposely sit by a better surfer just because they are catching waves. But if you are surfing near others keep these tips in mind… • Sit outside, with the rest of the surfers, not slightly inside and in the way. • If you paddle for a wave and miss it Young unidentified looking very Pelican like. and there is a surfer next to you, give your neighbor the next wave, even though you are still on the inside. • Longboarders...your window for catching a wave is huge and you can paddle out quicker on the small days. If you do NOT take advantage of it, shortboarders may respect you for it. Remember, there are plenty of waves for everyone. • If you know how to get all the waves, give one up and make a friend, there is no need to hog. As the sport and hobby of surfing continues to expand its population we MUST change our ways in order for the spirit of surfing to remain in tact and the sanity of a surfer to remain peaceful. Thanks for listening and trying to do your part, it is all we ask…

Hello Mark! You right! It is really quite special seeing the kids having fun surfing. Thanks for a chance to share our favorite shots. Ya, gotta love it when your kid’s doing better turns in middleschool - than the Dad and his many years in the water! Ivan enjoys surfing daily. Southside HB with all the kids! Rob

Johnny DeRouen

Wrtten by Mr. X

he story of Johnny DeRouen begins in the bayous of Louisiana, moves through the South Bay, and now lands on the local beaches of North O.C. Johnny is cut from the wood of old growth forest and though a solid citizen, father and family man, there is a smoldering ember of true rebellion just below the surface. Johnny embodies the prankster surfer spirit and the fierce loyalty to friends of a bygone era. Johnny’s surfing is also loyal to traditions of classic approach. A master at subtle positioning, Johnny’s surfing has nothing superfluous about it. There is no attempt to make the wave to be something it is not. Flow is apparent at all times with speed allowed rather than forced. Johnny also exhibits power moves, putting his 35 pound Foam & Glass round pintail fully on rail as he sets up for the speed run with a soul-arch bottom turn or hits the brakes with a full gouging cutback. Johnny loves to add personal touches to his solid approach with classic hand gestures, head bobs, parallel tube crouches and the occasional switchfoot. Johnny’s first home in California was the South Bay where he grew up surfing Hermosa and El Porto, as well as Palos Verde Cove and Haggerty’s. Johnny moved to Long Beach some years later and made his way to Seal Beach where his first surf acquaintance was the legendary Mike Owens, “Wiggy”, with whom he remains fast friends today. The art of trim is essential to surfing traditional longboards well, ala Skip Frey, and Johnny is truly a master of the seemingly effortless, but largely elusive, endeavor. Johnny is easy to pick out of a crowd – he’s the guy getting the longest fastest waves and making it look gracefully easy through nuanced and flawless trim surfing.

his Fall and Winter has been a memorable one if you are a local surfer. After a lack luster Summer, finally we were blessed with incredible conditions and a number of swells to suppress our hunger for some real size. The most memorable waves and conditions may have unfortunatly occurred at the same time as the California fire storms, creating incredible wind swept barrels and spectacular colored skies, especially at sunset. We were not able to take to many shots during that time as I was to busy surfing and Eddy was broken up. We are sure you have seen many photos from that time anyway but we did get many shots from the following swells that seemed to just keep coming every couple of weeks. Go to www.ourwavenewspaper and follow the link to our eppicsurf.com/ourwave website that has many shots from many of those days. Who knows, maybe you will find an epic shot of you surfing that you had no idea was being taken.

By way of Robin Lucca’s ocean and surf inspiration, no longer sea-worthy surfboards are transformed into and memorialized as works of art. These weathered soldiers of the surf undergo a metamorphosis under the vision and hands of the artist as she hand cuts and sets stained glass to create Indonesian abstract designs, panoramic views, floral murals and numerous other visionary concepts.

Surfer Art

w w w. o u r w a v e n e w s p a p e r. c o m

Cliff Kjoss

Robin begins the process with board selection, as the designs are on the deck of the boards allowing their original identities and personalities to remain as elements of the art. She welcomes private or public commissions and can work with you to develop a design custom to your space. Robin’s pieces include a tribute to “Stoner’s Point”, the classic photo by iconoclastic surf photographer, Ron Stoner. She is able to incorporate your own favorite photo from the mags or your personal collection into a design. Imagine your relic board transformed into a cool tribute to your own golden days, through a design based on a photo of you surfing that very board.

Art on Board

Robin Lucca

These are truly unique pieces of art, with the very cool underlying themes of ecology, metamorphosis and tribute, memorializing the boards which are the essence of the dance we love. The boards shown here are available for purchase at Stewart Surfboards, 2101 S. El Camino Real, San Clemente and Sunset Gallery, 538 N. El Camino Real, San Clemente or at surfmosaics.com. To contact Robin and/or view these pieces and many others, go to surfmosaics.com

Passing the Torch, Trevor Lucca

Writen by Tony Alvarado

T

The art and sport of surfing has inherent in it the tradition of passing the torch, whereby the groms become young men and begin to set their own course in the world of surfing. Trevor, as part of the next wave, has recently been picked up by Harbour Surfboards of Seal Beach. Harbour Team Captain, T.J. Ridings, has manned the helm of the team and taken Trevor under his wing as he manages the developing team. Since the previous article on Trevor, some two or three years ago, he has started attending Wilson High School and is in the Distinguished Scholars Program. Trevor is surfing his second year for Wilson’s competition team which is undefeated so far this season, including two victories over local rival, Los Alamitos High School. Trevor was voted Most Valuable Surfer in his freshman year with consistent 1st and 2nd place finishes in both shortboard and longboard divisions. Recently, he put together a string of four 1st place finishes in a row, two shortboard and two longboard. Trevor and his Wilson teammates, Joey Wangsness, and Code Watten led the team to a 2nd place Boy’s Longboard finish at the 2007 ISF League Championship at Oceanside last March. As Trevor’s course of surfing progresses, he acknowledges and sends a thank you shout out to MD Surfboards and Katin Surf Shop for support along the way. Trevor is stoked to be part of long-established surf icon, Harbour Surfboards and looks forward to a long and surf-filled relationship. T.J. and Harbour have lots of plans in the works for the team, including a film trip to Mexico. We are looking forward to seeing the footage.
