Minimize Cost and Maximize Value with Thermally Fused Laminate Thermally fused laminate (TFL) can substantially lower the material and labor costs of projects, compared to other wood-based decorative surfaces, a recent study reveals. The value engineering study, conducted by EGGER Wood Products in collaboration with fabricators Nexis3 and Thompson Millwork, demonstrated cost savings of up to 79%, with identical or better quality and performance. “Using a combination of TFL and laminates versus plywood and wood veneers for cabinet, furniture and interior design projects can save architects, designers and fabricators valuable time, money and resources,” said Lisa Thornton, Head of Marketing for EGGER North America.

Combining the use of TFL for low- to mid-traffic and vertical applications with laminates for high-traffic, horizontal and curved/postformed applications can deliver impressive cost efficiencies. Both materials not only offer tremendous options for stylish design, but are also durable, high-quality, hygienic, easy-to-clean surfaces with scratch- and fade-resistant properties. EGGER analyzed project estimates for a completed multifamily project as well as multiple speculative projects based on model renderings. The analysis showed savings between 21 and 36% when using a combination of TFL and laminates versus laminates alone, and savings between 48 and 79% versus wood veneers.

Custom architectural millwork firm Nexis3 used a combination of TFL and laminates to optimize their budget for 65 high-end, contemporary apartments in The Metropolitan, a mixed-use highrise in downtown Rochester, N.Y. The project included custom kitchen, bath and laundry casework.

Speculative projects, priced by Thompson Millwork based in Durham, N.C., included a luxury walk-in closet, a retail space, a luxury hotel guest room and an upscale restaurant and bar. The study provides welcome news for architects, designers and fabricators hoping to optimize budgets as they face rising costs and product availability in many areas. And, EGGER’s perfect Decor Match System makes taking advantage of the company’s TFL’s cost saving benefits simple, with ideally matched TFL, laminates and edge banding all available from one single manufacturer. To see the full study results, visit www.egger.com/ve.

Lessons from Highs and Lows

T

he past few months have been an emotionally exhausting roller coaster. It’s one of those times where you suffer a couple of hits, take a deep breath, feel thankful that the fight is over, and then get gut punched. After taking numerous hits, I usually begin considering why I’m getting hit, what I could have done to prevent getting hit, and what I’m supposed to learn from it all. Previously, I’ve shared news of our house “demolition” as a result of a $3 leaking supply line. Well, construction is underway and with a family, a business, and travel, combined with delays, cost overruns and trying to make good decisions that we’ll have to live with, it is taking my family to the breaking point. I am cursed with being a “problem solver” and I’ve learned that there are some problems that I simply can’t solve and taking some punches are unavoidable. However, as they say, the show must go on. As I prepared for a trip I was excited about (part business, but mostly a great opportunity to visit with an industry leader, who’s both a good man and someone I call a friend), I received news that another friend lost his daughter to a long fight with cancer. I unfortunately have seen many fights for life, but none that have been a gut punch like this. She was just 14 and although she passed far too young, she is the one story that I will say “won” her fight. After countless surgeries, treatments, highs and lows, she never gave up and never stopped smiling. This also gave her family the blessing of being able to fight along with her in the most inspiring and graceful way that I know I would never be capable of. Until now, my many fights have only been about winning. She has taught me that there is far more importance in how you fight than whether or not you “win.” This is how legacies are defined and hers will stay with me forever. In the midst of this, I watched (from farther away than my heart would prefer) what is happening in Eastern Europe. I watched again as yet another terrorist played out his wishes at the expense of innocent people and their families. This is personal for me and should be for everyone, yet the world responds as if it’s some reality show that they can easily shut off before going to bed in the comfort of their homes. I ask myself how these same people would feel if it was their loved one joining thousands of others to drop off their families at a foreign border with only a handful of their possessions…and then turn around to fight for their home and life? It is easy to think that we are “past this” and that things like this only happen with savages in third world countries, but it doesn’t. While these actions are hard for me to watch unfold, the silence by the

It was a lesson to me that I will never forget that sometimes simply trusting people is rewarded. rest of the world allowing it to happen is what is most unbelievable and should serve as an eye opener for everyone. But as I returned from one of the first industry events I have attended since the pandemic began, I am again conflicted in my emotions. This event was different for me for some reason. For years these industry leaders have been kind to me and welcomed me as I took the helm of these publications. But this time, more than usual, I shared my highs and lows with them as if they were the friends they had promised for years to be. I was unusually vulnerable with things I was struggling with within my business and shared the things I was scared about as a parent of young kids these days. These are things I have never done with anyone other than those whom I have been through countless battles with. I should not have been surprised that baring my soul to these fine people was rewarded a hundredfold. People who have already made their summit in life took time to listen, and give kind, thoughtful advice. Men and women who I’ve known, but have not even shared a meal with, extended offers to visit them, stay in their homes, and have an “escape” from the things that may be stretching my family. It was a lesson to me that I will never forget that sometimes simply trusting people is rewarded. More than anything, I look at these “lows” and it simply makes me grateful. Thankful my family is healthy and that we are together. Grateful to those who put themselves in harm’s way so we can live our peaceful, safe lives. Humbled that the miracle that brought me to this industry has had the additional gifts of making true friends who help to bring out my better side. While our lives may not be perfect, remember that there are countless millions who pray every night for the life of “problems” that we may have. More than ever, I am humbled and grateful for this industry and its people whom we have the privilege of serving. Patrick Adams, President | 526 Media Group, Inc.

New Beginnings

N

eedless to say, the past few years have been challenging for people all across the globe, but emerging from quarantines and isolation has also given many people the chance at a fresh start. I include myself in that group. Now, I am no stranger to new beginnings. As a military spouse for 20-plus years, I moved with my Army husband wherever we were told to go. Along the way, we bought, sold and rented out houses, including doing a complete renovation on a foreclosure in Colorado—doing all the work ourselves. During this time, we had three children and they quickly learned the family way of going with the flow, adapting to new surroundings and schools in our adventures. One thing I told my kids as we moved across the country and back is that each move is an opportunity. It is what you make of it: you can choose to be miserable and wallow in self-pity or you can choose to get out there and make an effort…and have a high likelihood of making friends and enjoying the place you live. A few years ago, my husband retired from the Army and we chose to move back to Alabama, where our families live. We chose a small town near where he grew up and proceeded to put our family plan into action once again, getting involved in our new community—but this time, we were setting down roots. Our oldest was just starting high school when we moved for the last time. Our youngest was about to start Pre-K (how’s that for starting over?). A few years after we were settled into our forever home, my two daughters told me they kinda missed moving every few years. It had become part of their lives and their “normal.” They also confessed they missed going someplace new and having that fresh start, so we pledged to travel more with them and renewed their passports…then came 2020… My oldest graduated high school in the weirdest school year most can remember. Her last quarter was hurriedly shifted to a virtual format and many teachers and students struggled with the sudden changes. There was no senior prom (even though we already bought her dress), no Honors Day, no senior picnic, no graduation parties…you get the picture. She was captain of the varsity soccer team—a dream of hers ever since she started playing the game at age three—for a total of three games before the season was cut short. She started college that fall, but was almost a prisoner in her dorm room for the first semester with so many restrictions and all her classes shifted online. I asked her if she wanted to come

New beginnings are all in your attitude, and I am looking to make my time with Surface & Panel long, meaningful and fulfilling. home, but she had so looked forward to being “on her own,” she chose to stay on campus and things eased a little second semester. It was not exactly the fresh start she planned, but to her credit, she adapted and made the most of it. This year, my younger daughter graduated high school, enjoying all the festivities her sister had to miss—I definitely think she appreciated those moments a little more. When she heads to college this fall and her older sister returns to campus, I will be outnumbered by boys in my house for the first time ever. Along with all these adjustments, I started a new job just as the school year was ending. You can say I am in full reset mode. As the new editor for Surface & Panel, I am excited to continue its traditions and take it to the next level. Having been a writer and editor for newspapers and magazines over the past few decades, I am excited to combine my passion for storytelling with that for construction and design. I know a bit about the industry, but I am constantly learning. I look forward to meeting so many of our readers at the IWF in Atlanta in August, to absorb all the amazing innovations that have come about in the industry over these past few years and to hear more about what you’d like to see here in our pages. New beginnings are all in your attitude, and I am looking to make my time with Surface & Panel long, meaningful and fulfilling. Feel free to email me with any article ideas or things you’d like to see on our webpage or in our social media—I am formulating grand plans for those, but always appreciate more experienced input. So here I go, navigating yet another new beginning—setting down my professional roots here at 526 Media to flourish for years to come. Jennifer Williams, Managing Editor

Happenings FPJ Publishes Carbon Analysis of Wood Composite Panels The Forest Products Journal recently published a research paper titled, Carbon Analysis of Wood Composite Panels, authored by Maureen Puettmann, Principal, WoodLife Environmental Consultants LLC. This paper was sponsored by CPA and provides information on the net carbon impact of particleboard, MDF and hardboard–engineered wood siding and trim (EWST) by measuring the total carbon storage (embedded carbon) and embodied carbon over an estimated service life of 25–30 years for these products. The results present carbon pools and flows for composite panels manufacturing facilities located in the U.S. and Canada for the production years 1996–2019. The composite panel industry stores more than 14.8 million metric tons of carbon (CO2e) through the manufacture of panels each year. This is equivalent to carbon emissions for over 3.2 million cars (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency 2021). In summary, North American composite panels store far more carbon than released from cradle through service life. A large majority of the technical information used to develop the paper was based on life cycle analyses and environmental product declarations previously funded by CPA. n Visit www.compositepanel.org or www.doi.org/10.13073/FPJ-D-22-00010 for more information.

Uniboard Invests $250 Million in Upgrades and Expansion Uniboard, Canada's largest producer of biocomposites and decorative surfaces for a variety of indoor and outdoor applications, announced a $250 million investment in the construction of a new state-of-the-art particleboard press at its Val-d'Or plant in Quebec. The new continuous press will be equipped with the latest state-ofthe-art technologies for the production of particleboard. Construction begins this year and the commissioning of the new press is scheduled for early 2025. Once the work is completed, the plant will employ about 190 people. "This investment, which is the third phase of the Val-d'Or investment plan, confirms Uniboard's leadership position in the North American engineered wood products market and its commitment to its valued customers and employees," said Lionel Dubrofsky, Chairman of Uniboard's Board of Directors.

"When the work is completed, we will have invested more than $350 million in the Val-d'Or plant, as part of a three-phase investment process, making it the most modern particleboard plant in North America and positioning Uniboard as one of TFL's leading integrated producers, particleboard and MDF. The Val-d'Or plant is renowned for its use of black spruce fibers, making its particleboard unparalleled in the North American market.” As Quebec's largest manufacturer of composite wood panels and decorative solutions, Uniboard is a major player in the forest value chain. "Today's announcement represents an important milestone for Uniboard and its entire team," said James Hogg, President and CEO of Uniboard. "This investment, which builds on a 45-year success in Val-d'Or, will play an important role in strengthening relationships with existing customers, recruiting new customers and developing new markets and business opportunities. It will help expand our product offering and increase their availability, which will allow Uniboard to consolidate its position as the supplier of choice.” In addition to having the latest particleboard production technology, the Val-d'Or plant will have a negative carbon footprint thanks to carbon sequestration in sustainable products and low-carbon production. In addition, Uniboard will enter the thin panel market, a biocomposite that is in high demand in the North American market.

UNIBOARD UPGRADES AND EXPANDS IN QUEBEC

The geographical position of the Val-d'Or plant allows Uniboard to serve the main markets of Quebec, Canada, and the United States by truck and train. In addition to its ability to produce value-added TFL products, the Val-d'Or plant also leverages its Unires resin plant, located in the same location, making it one of the most integrated production sites in North America.” n CONTINUED ON PAGE 18 ›

‘’Our team implemented some of the very critical technical elements within the venue, ultimately helping Illuminarium achieve their final vision to provide the most realistic immersive experience possible,” says Dustin Small, director of special projects for Strong/MDI. “Working side-by-side with Illuminarium’s technical staff, we have helped create a truly unique venue that is sure to please all audiences.” This proprietary coating is put onto the panels, which are then essentially mudded into the wall, from a Sheetrock perspective, explains Allen. “We spent a lot of time and effort working with our contractors to essentially invent a wall specification. In architecture, you have certain specifications for how smooth and how straight a wall should be. Level 5 is usually the highest people go in construction, but we found we needed something better than that, because our wall isn’t just a wall, it’s a screen.” So they invented a new wall spec, he says. “We call it the Level 5-plus or Level 5-Illuminarium spec. Because as soon as you have even a slight bump or wave in the wall, that affects the image being projected, and we don’t want that. We had to make it as flat as possible, as durable as possible and with the proper expansion joints. That was the first step—to have a very, very good wall.” The next important step, says Allen, was securing the audio, and Illuminarium found their audio partner in HOLOPLOT out of Berlin, Germany. “HOLOPLOT really already had the technology, but also had the vision to expand on that technology to bring audio to our space that was truly immersive and truly specialized,” says Allen. “Going into designing the Illuminarium space, we knew off the bat we 22

needed the world’s best audio, the world’s best video, the world’s best interactive technology to really pull this off,” he says. “The X1 really allows us, through its toolset, the capability to work with designers and creators in ways that they’ve never even dreamed of. Where HOLOPLOT and the X1 system really shine is the ability to truly use 3D audio-beamforming and wave field synthesis…to combine those two technologies and make sound isolated to a certain physical space within our venues.” Natalia Szczepanczyk, sound system design engineer at HOLOPLOT, says one of the great capabilities of the X1 system is being able to focus sound and actually project it exactly where wanted. “So something that is traditionally available primarily to light is now possible for sound,” she says. “The speakers at ear height are positioned behind a very special material—it’s a micro-perforated panel that is coated with a special paint which essentially allows for the projections to still be CONTINUED ON PAGE 24 ›

very beautifully visible on it from inside the room, but it also allows the sound to completely, freely pass through,” says Szczepanczyk. “Therefore, as the visitor, you’ll see the image perfectly and you’ll hear the sound image also as perfect.” Each HOLOPLOT speaker is about one meter squared, says Allen, and each one has 96 smaller speakers inside. “We had to imbed these into our walls because we have a ring of ear-height speakers,” he says. “Localization of sound is very important to us, but at the same time, we didn’t want a visible ring of speakers to detract from the visual experience.” Allen says Illuminarium is excited to now see where this new technology experience will go. “We’ve built this new format (like IMAX or 35 mm formats) with criteria or specifications to go along with it,” he explains. “But we are not the gatekeepers…we want to open the format to other content creators. It’s more about coaching people on what works and what doesn’t.” s p Visit www.Illuminarium.com for more information.

o matter what the experience of the past two years has been like for us as individuals, it’s clear that culturally we’ve grown more accustomed to the comforts of home. While many of us have yearned for public environments that feel collective and exciting, commercial interior designers have also felt a demand to make their spaces more inviting and welcoming in a way that emulates home. While the lines have blurred between these spaces in the past decade, the “resimercial” trend has quickly accelerated over the past few years, leaving commercial designers with the difficult task of balancing excitement and interest with harmony and familiarity. Even with the perfect creative vision to address these seemingly competing needs, a project can still fall flat if the right products don’t exist to bring the ideas to life. As surface manufacturers, it’s our job to think three steps ahead, building a repertoire that will arm designers with the tools they need to do their best work. Formica Corporation’s new SurfaceSet 2022 collection aims to do just this by introducing 20 new decors and two textures into the brand’s catalog that are inspired by the restorative qualities of nature and the beauty of handcrafted processes. As with all of our collections, SurfaceSet 2022 was driven by years of research and trend analysis. Even before the pandemic, this blurring of disciplines was apparent, as overall wellness and harmony emerged as ever-increasing priorities for consumers, both at home and when out and about. We found from our research that fundamentally, people are looking for a safe haven that extends beyond their home’s four

walls. This feeling can be emanated through unthreatening forms and harmonious colors that work together to create a mood of elegant escapism. While natural woodgrains are the perfect choice to mimic the safe retreat found in nature, we wanted to offer unexpected options such as Birchbark, a pattern created through scanning bark from birch trees. Combining the bark with light gray flecks that look like the natural variation found in concrete allowed us to combine rustic familiarity with industrial elements, creating a pattern that is surprisingly modern and toes the line of resimercial spaces perfectly. Thinking beyond the traditional woodgrain allowed us to offer this grounded biophilic option that still feels new and unexplored. Our research also found that in an increasingly complex world, people are finding comfort in the unambiguously simple, anchored by handcrafted skill that’s enduringly familiar. This search for a new order leans into tradition yet also reaches for something fresh. We were inspired by this insight when we looked to reinterpret traditional woodgrains in Brushstroke, an abstract pattern created by hand brush strokes in light, natural and warm terracotta stain colors that emulate the richness of wood tones yet still build interest from the unexpected. Amid the desires for safety and security, there’s also a hope for change and new beginnings. When we designed surfaces to fulfill this need for a fresh start, we took inspiration from a blank slate and literal clean canvas with our Cloth series, a subtle herringbone design that marries the comfort of fabrics with the cleanability of laminate. As commercial spaces continue to lean more into residential inspiration, this theme is increasingly critical as we reimagine and challenge our design norms. Of course, there are surfaces that don’t find the same usability in homes as in commercial spaces, yet even those uniquely commercial surfaces are expected to have more warmth to them. Take for instance our new Paperfold series. It reads as a solid from a distance but up close you can see the hand-crumpled paper design, crafted by our design team in collaboration with paper manufacturers. This design might be more difficult to use broadly in residential spaces, but the innate simplicity serves to make commercial spaces instantly more familiar and authentic in a way that feels very residential. While there’s beauty in spaces that feel uniquely commercial, most consumers find comfort in hopeful reminders of home. With the right tools in hand, commercial interior designers have proven they can masterfully walk the resimercial line, building spaces that envelope us in familiar warmth yet remind us of the wonder of collective experiences. s p

aking tons of a waste product bound for landfills and creating a desirable, versatile, wood-substitute while saving forests sounds like wishful thinking. But a manufacturing plant in Mississippi looks to revolutionize the industry by doing just that— making sustainable building materials out of upcycled rice hulls. “When our CEO called me in a few years ago to show me samples of this new product, my initial reaction was, ‘what’s a rice hull?’ and then, ‘this is going to change the world,’” says Chandler DeLinks, strategic account manager for Modern Mill. Rice hulls are designed in nature to protect the rice grain from the elements—which makes it an ideal building material, he explains. A rice hull or rice husk is a protective sheath or shell on the rice grain that protects the rice from everything you want to protect your home or your building from—water, weather, sunlight, pests, mold and mildew, he adds. “Rice husks traditionally were considered waste—a by-product in rice production that added up to billions of pounds of waste going into landfills,” says DeLinks. “We take that and repurpose this natural fiber, blending it with our proprietary components, to create our ACRE product.” “Basically, we have all the benefits and features of a traditional composite building material, but now we have something courtesy of the rice hulls that looks, feels, smells, processes and even finishes like a wood,” he says. “It’s pretty incredible…when we first went to market and talked with panel distributers—it didn’t matter if it was the plastics wholesalers, the guys selling to those making boats, retail displays, signs, outdoor furniture, or the hardwood and specialty panel distributors—those were our first customers. This material does everything the traditional plastic alternatives can do, but takes it a few steps further.” “There’s really almost unlimited options on the design side for ACRE,” says DeLinks. “You can heat this material, you can vacuum form it, you can thermoform it, you can fold it, bend it, shape it, you have all these incredible capabilities.” “On the end-user experience, what we’re finding is that people think it’s easier to work with than wood in many cases,” he adds. “When we talk about using some other hardwoods, exotic woods… ipé, for example, is incredibly hard and hard on tools because the wood is so dense. You don’t have to pre-drill our material, and there’s less waste, since it doesn’t crack or splinter. It’s almost like we are factory controlling the highest quality of wood grade that is becoming more and more difficult to get.” ACRE is priced lower than luxury woods like ipé and is competitive with or slightly higher than composite materials, say company officials.

Decorative surfaces are important when evoking the emotion of a space. As one of the world’s leading full-service providers of decorative surfaces, we develop seamlessly matched products that are ideal for spaces of today and in the future. “We Make Rooms Worth Living In.” THE EVOLUTION “This is really the evolution or the next generation of composite building materials,” he says. “Not only are we upcycling, recycling and incorporating a ‘landfill product,’ but that landfill product really contributes to this material in its performance and aesthetics, closing the gap between all the benefits and features and the low maintenance that people want from a composite building material or a panel.” The original technology using rice hulls goes back about 20 years, says DeLinks, and started as an exotic hardwood replacement for making outdoor furniture. “But we licensed the original technology, then modified and improved upon it,” he says. The U.S. is a net exporter of rice and has an abundant supply of rice hulls available that many people just don’t know about, says DeLinks. At their Fernwood, Mississippi, site, Modern Mill takes the rice hulls, grinds them up and blends them with 18 other ingredients, making a compound that is then extruded into sheet goods and panels. In that process, when they trim or sand the boards, all the scraps and dust are collected to reuse in the process. The new material offers other advantages, as well, says DeLinks. SAVING TREES Officials estimate using one pallet of ACRE saves an acre of tropical rainforest for exotic hardwoods like ipé, while softwoods like southern yellow pine—grown on managed forest lands where trees are packed to maximum density—one pallet of ACRE saves one tree or one pallet of the equivalent lumber. “There is a very tangible impact we are making on deforestation—particularly if you look at some of the tropical and exotic woods,” says DeLinks. “I recently read statistics that to get an ipé tree out of the forest, there’s collateral damage of 100 trees that are leveled just to get to that one tree.” USA

“We remove the necessity for edgebanding on a paneled good. We don’t need to be laminated. However, if you want a water-resistant substrate to laminate, absolutely, this is a perfect material for that. But what’s kind of beautiful about it is that it is both the core substrate and the finished material all in one.” “What the hardwood guys and those who sell specialty panels love about ACRE is that you now essentially have the ability to purchase and use 4-ft. wide up to 20-ft. long, vertical grain hardwood that won’t rot, crack, splinter—and comes with a lifetime warranty,” he says. “It really is this fascinating material in this surface and panel space,” says DeLinks. “We are essentially making like a hardwood. When you talk about the woods that we are typically competing with or replacing in the marketplace, it’s the ipés, it’s the teaks, it’s the vertical-grain cedars, it’s the mahoganies. We hear it all the time: get a 16-ft. long, 16-inch piece of mahagony without any cracks or knots or saplines or that has the clear grain I’m looking for…it’s almost impossible right now, from allocation and availability.” “That is the beauty of this product,” he adds. “Along with being made by more than 50% of upcycled rice hulls and being manufactured in a facility that is closed-loop, zero waste.”

LIMITLESS APPLICATIONS Modern Mill offers ACRE sheet goods and panels from a quarter inch thick to an inch thick, says DeLinks, but the company also mills those into other materials, including deck boards, trim boards, millwork, siding, porch flooring and ceiling panels. “So really, we have a lot of people doing all kinds of things with it.” “On the West Coast, we have people making outdoor kitchens and outdoor cabinetry, people

building fences with it, people fabricating outdoor receptacles, outdoor trashcans, etc. And that’s on the processing and fabricating side,” says DeLinks. “At millwork shops… we have a customer who was using PVC and wood—one on each side. Now he takes ACRE and uses it on both sides: he’ll CNC and heatbend ACRE and then he’ll bring it over and he’ll finish it SANDED RAW SAMPLE with the wood and stain it…he’s doing outdoor kitchens and specialty walls.” In the Northeast, many people and companies are using ACRE for trim boards, siding, fencing and board and batten, he says. “And builders are actually bringing us to designers…I just talked with a designer in historic Concord, Massachusetts, who had four builders bring our material to him recently and ask him to start specifying it for jobs to help save wear and tear on their tools.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 35 ›

Making Sustainability Work Modern Mill is committed to educating the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry on the merits of using an alternative to wood in construction projects for a more sustainable future. The manufacturer also embraced the recent outcome of the COP26 (Conference of Parties) that states its commitment “…to halt and reverse forest loss and land degradation by 2030.” The pledge, signed by world leaders who represent more than 90 percent of the world’s forests, vows to protect and restore ecosystems and manage land sustainability to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The pledge is also backed by commitments reaching $19.2 billion in public and private funds. “There’s no need to wait until 2030. We can start today by reaching out to our AEC partners to demonstrate the benefit of a wood alternative, like ACRE, in their construction projects whenever possible,” said Kim Guimond, CMO of Modern Mill. “New products like ACRE, coupled with the supply chain issue…it’s an excellent opportunity for building, design, and specifier professionals to make alternative and sustainable choices without compromise.”

ACRE PRODUCTS CAN BE USED IN A WIDE VARIETY OF APPLICATIONS, FROM DECKING TO CABINETS AND MUCH MORE.

Modern Mill recently published a white paper, Nine Steps to Zero, detailing key factors to consider when evaluating wood alternatives to reach a sustainable outcome. An excerpt from this paper is below. EVALUATING THE TREE-FRIENDLINESS OF WOOD ALTERNATIVES Today, consumers can choose from a wide selection of materials for decking, siding, trim and other applications. These alternatives can help lessen the demand for lumber, easing the strain on the world’s trees and ensuring that even when wood alone will do, it can be sourced from sustainably harvested forests. Some materials do a better job at creating a “circulating” economy that takes waste out of the equation. In evaluating wood alternatives, consumers and building professionals can consider these nine factors: Sustainability. If we want to extract fewer natural resources, we need to make better use of the resources we already extract. Materials that would otherwise be discarded, particularly waste and byproducts from existing manufacturing processes is a great start. Mainstream appeal. For a product to make a measurable impact on the environment, it must appeal to mainstream tastes. Consumers like to be green, but they also want to buy products with the look, feel and warmth of real wood—and perform. SEE "SUSTAINABILITY" ON PAGE 34 ›

Easy substitution. The home construction industry is mostly built around wood. Saws, hammers, drills, glue, nails, and screws are all designed to handle lumber. If we want to swap in a substitute material, it should be available in standard dimensions, and require no special equipment, tools, or training to work with. Competitive features. Enticement works better than enforcement. The public resisted compact fluorescent lamps (CFL) mandates, but eagerly adopted energy-saving LEDs due to their superior features. In the same way, a wood alternative should be more than just green: it should offer clear advantages like the ability to easily paint, stain, or use new crafting techniques such as thermoforming.

ALPHACAM

CIRCULAR/Zero waste manufacturing. Consumers expect a product that promises to reduce waste to also produce little or no waste during its manufacturing process.

Simple yet powerful

100% recyclability. Recyclability is a tablestakes requirement for products promoted as eco-friendly.

From simple routed parts to complex, 5-axis furniture components, ALPHACAM can make your CNC router perform better than you thought possible.

Durability. Durability is even more important than recycling for keeping materials out of landfills. After harvesting and processing, materials should remain in use for as long as possible, avoiding the need to consume additional resources to recycle and replace them. Wood alternatives should deliver premium performance and resist weather, water, mold, rot, pests, and other forces of wear and tear.

Economic viability. The COP26 declaration focuses on delivering sustainable development and promoting rural transformation. Some wood alternatives are made from upcycled agricultural waste, which can help local farmers and communities unlock additional sources of revenue.

Shortened supply lines. Local sourcing is not only less wasteful than using global transportation lines, but it’s also more resilient and less prone to interruption, as we have seen dramatically demonstrated over the past several years. We can all imagine a greener world where forests are no longer dwindling, but instead spread their branches ever wider over the earth. More than 100 of the world’s leaders promised to bring us there in less than a decade. Can we do it? Thanks to relentless innovation, the building industry now has the tools to help make it happen. The question is how quickly we will decide to use them. n

And in other markets including Florida, boatbuilders are using ACRE. “Boatbuilders are taking it and wrapping it in fiberglass and using it as a substrate and they are building the actual structure for boats but they also are using it as a teak replacement,” says DeLinks. “That’s the crazy thing about this material—you can use it as the substrate, because it has all of these incredible performance attributes that make it great for that, but also you can take it and sand it and stain it and have it be the finished decking of a luxury yacht.” In the Midwest, the company sees a lot of trim applications, but also sells ACRE through a lot of panel distributors to those making outdoor signs and expo booth materials. “We actually just did a really big project with a mill shop in Florida,” says DeLinks. “Heineken brought us in to help build a VIP structure—synched up with their sustainability push for this zero-point, zero percent Heineken.” “It’s easier to say what can’t you do with ACRE,” he says. “To clarify, the one thing you cannot do…the material is not structural, you couldn’t frame a house with it. It’s not a 2x4 replacement—yet.” “We are starting to see more and more applications for it,” says DeLinks. “Part of the fun and excitement of it is just seeing what people do with this material we are putting into the marketplace.” s p

Cleaning Out Your HR Closet

E

very home needs a good, thorough cleaning at least once a year. The same can be said for your company and its HR practices—particularly given the enormous changes over the past two years. CLEAN UP YOUR COMPLIANCE: Laws, best practices, and companies change from year-to-year. Take this time to make sure you are current and compliant. Employee census: Conduct a review of your current employees, noting any changes in number or demographics that may impact other aspects, such as policies, benefits, etc. Be sure you are aware of any regulations you now or no longer meet. Handbooks/policies: Have your handbook and employment policies reviewed and updated every year or two. Changes in federal, state, or local employment law or the number of your employees require policy revisions, and you may address your current workplace, such as modernizing a dress code, adding work-from-home requirements, or implementing a social media policy. Make sure your policies comply with recent legal decisions and guidance from government agencies, such as the DOL and NLRA. Posters/notices: Make sure your federal, state, and, in some cases, local posters and notices are up-to-date and posted in common areas where employees have easy access. Keep the most current OSHA Summary Form 300-A posted until April 30. Personnel files: Review all personnel files, ensuring current employee files are complete and pulling those for terminated employees. Purge records and forms that you are no longer obligated to retain in accordance with the timing required by regulation. Training: Ensure employees understand current job requirements, product specs, and company expectations. Include training on non-harassment/non-sexual harassment/non-retaliation (required in several states) to provide a part of an affirmative defense if needed in the future.

COVID-19: Update your COVID-19 procedures to reflect the latest guidance, which changes as the numbers improve. Many times you can get employees back to work sooner than you could a few months ago. INTRODUCE NEW INITIATIVES: Workplaces, society, and priorities in 2022 are different than they were even two or three years ago so companies looking to retain their best employees may need to implement cultural changes which support employee concerns. However, issuing a new initiative without follow up and management buy-in can actually do more harm so be prepared to commit. Work-from-home arrangements: The labor market is very tight. COVID-19 has shifted the priorities of some employees and limited the options of others. We all know that there are jobs that must be done in person. But, for the others, try to find a way to accommodate some flexibility into the full-time, in-person option. Offering the option, even if only for one or two days a week, can give employees the flexibility they need to balance their personal lives while staying engaged in their jobs. Diversity, inclusion and equity (DEI): Develop and implement a program to address disparity within the workforce and to empower minority employees. This can include policies and training as well as creating affinity groups to creatively address issues and ensure everyone is valued and their opinions are heard. Employee contributions: Employees often have ideas such as how to improve work methods, update the company culture, or CONTINUED ON PAGE 37 ›

Q. I have an employee who always has their cell

phone out. They disrupt the workplace by taking excessive phone calls throughout the day and with their loud ringtone. What can I do?

A. You have the right to require employees to be

productive during working hours. This includes requiring that they hold off on making or receiving personal calls until they are on a break or after their shift. You can also prohibit them from using their phones for social media or to stream music or videos.

‹ CONTINUED FROM PAGE 36

incorporate the latest technologies. Allowing employees to present their suggestions (big and small) and working with them to determine the validity of implementing them can lead to greater employee commitment to the company while giving you a new source of outside-the-box thinking.

If their ringtone is too loud or irritating, you can require them to put their phones in silent or vibrate mode.

REFRESH YOUR RECRUITING: The tight labor market from 2021 is not easing up as we head into mid-2022; applicants have more job choices and are holding firm to their “must-have” list. Companies looking for new employees should update their processes and expand their search to find the right fit.

To help reduce all distractions, you can require them to keep their phones in their desk or vehicle, especially if there are safety issues with them having their cell phones while at work.

Branding: Companies often think to advertise to potential customers, but you should also market to potential employees. Update your website; create a video about the company; use social media to publicize your company and message.

Consider making allowances if the employee is expecting an urgent call.

What is Ban the Box? The principal aim of Ban the Box is the passage of laws removing the checkbox asking if applicants for work have a criminal record on hiring applications. Often, Ban the Box laws regulate when and how an employer can consider this information, and some Ban the Box laws provide penalties for applicants who suffer a civil rights violation. Most Ban the Box laws exempt security and law-enforcement positions, as well as positions that require work with children and the elderly. The federal government became the most recent employer to adopt a “Ban the Box” policy when The Fair Chance to Compete for Jobs Act became effective December 20, 2021. The law prohibits federal contractors and most federal agencies from inquiring into an applicant’s criminal history—including arrests and convictions—prior to making a conditional job offer. As of presstime, 37 states, the District of Columbia and more than 150 localities have adopted some form of Ban the Box legislation.

Streamlined hiring process: Most applicants have several job offers to choose from so simplify your process to screen applicants more efficiently, make good decisions quicker, and offer employment sooner. Consider including some pre-screening questions with the application or doing group interviews so more people can talk with the candidate without requiring multiple visits. Conditional offers: Making an offer quicker should not mean skipping the essential steps of background checks, reference checks, and drug testing. By making an offer conditional upon passing these requirements, you can get an offer to the candidate quicker while still being compliant. Compliant hiring: Update your application to comply with legal changes such as Ban the Box [See What is Ban the Box?]. Review your interview questions to make sure they are legal and effective. Train your hiring team so they know what to do and not do to legally find the right fit. Update your offer letter to provide important information such as employment-at-will and benefits. Job sources: Since applicants may be hard to find using old methods, consider trying new ways to reach your next hire. Create an employee referral program. Post ads on specialized sites such as those targeting veterans, disabled, or unemployed job seekers. For new, management, or hard-to-place positions, hire a recruiter who knows the job market and your industry and can actively source your job while you focus on other things. SCRUB YOUR SALARY STRUCTURE: Today’s rising cost-of-living means employees need to be paid more. The tight labor market means companies must pay the market rate (if not more) to attract and retain the best employees. Higher new-hire salaries and increasing minimum wage rates further compress a company’s salary structure.

“ H O W D O I G E T ’ E M T O D O W H AT I WA N T ’ E M T O ? ” hat’s probably the question I’m asked more than any other. Frustrated CEOs, CSO’s and sales managers express that thought over and over, in one way or another. They’re talking about their salespeople, of course. They harbor a feeling that some of their salespeople just aren’t doing what they want them to do, and they don’t know what to do about it. If that thought occasionally passes through your mind, read on. “What do you want them to do?” I often reply. At this point, you’re probably thinking, “What an obvious question. We want them to sell a lot, of course.” But that response is too vague and coarse to hold any real meaning in today’s world. A few years ago, it was OK to direct your salespeople to “Go forth and sell a lot,” but today that direction is not sufficient. Salespeople are capable of more than that. And the world in which your company operates has changed significantly in the last few years. Our economy has grown increasingly complex, many markets are maturing, the demands and expectations of your customers are growing, your customers’ choices of ways to satisfy their needs are multiplying, and information technology is growing more powerful and user friendly. All that means that you need to direct your sales force more finely than at any time in the

past. Successful sales management in the 21st Century requires a more sophisticated answer from you than just “Go forth and sell.” I learned that lesson the hard way in my days as a sales rep. I was doing a great job selling in my largest account. That one customer accounted for about 30% of my total volume. Sales were increasing monthly, and my visibility and influence in the account was growing. If my boss wanted me to “go forth and sell a lot,” I was doing it! Then, one dismal Monday afternoon, I was sheepishly greeted by my primary contact person, and informed that I was to see the director of purchasing. The news from the director was short and to the point; the vice president of administration had signed a prime vendor contract with my arch-competitor. Over the next 90 days, they would be phasing out all of my business and turning it over to my competitor. All of my contact people were disappointed and not in favor of this move, but it had been negotiated by people in higher places. The moral of the story? I was doing a great job of “going forth and selling a lot.” But I should have been getting to know the administrative people and my contact’s bosses. If I had been directed to do that, instead of being focused on getting the easiest sales, I may have been able to ward off the end-around by the competition. I realize that a case could be made that I should have known to do that on my own. After all, don’t good salespeople know to do those kinds of things? No. I didn’t, and I was a heavy hitter,

Getting People To Do What You Want

high-income straight commission salesperson. But I was driven by a straight commission compensation program that rewarded me for gross profits in the short term, and I never thought to cover all my bases by calling on my customers’ bosses. Here’s another example. One of my clients owns a small but rapidly growing equipment distributorship. Every month his salespeople must count certain pieces of equipment in their territories. Each month he selects a piece of equipment and requires his sales force to count how many of those there are, where they are, how old they are, what brand they are, and when they are scheduled to be replaced. He uses that information to make territory and product line forecasts, as well as a basis for developing more sophisticated joint marketing plans with his partner-vendors. I’m sure you’ll agree— that’s good information to have. But don’t the salespeople do those kinds of things on their own? Do they really need that kind of precise direction from management? Take a little self-test. Consider each of your salespeople, one at a time. Ask yourself, “Is (salesperson’s name) systematically collecting that kind of market information on his or her own?” If your answer is a 100% “yes,” will you please write to me so that I can note your sales force as the single national exception? Those two examples illustrate just two of hundreds of possible behaviors you could expect from your sales force. In each case, the company’s long-term strategic interests were best served by directing the sales force to behaviors that probably wouldn’t happen in the absence of that direction. So, the first step in getting your salespeople “to do what you want ’em to,” is to decide “what you want ’em to do.” Ideally, those things proceed directly from your strategic plan. For example, if your strategic plan says that you want to penetrate a new market segment, then you should expect your salespeople to make X calls per month on that segment, or create X new customers within that segment, or do X amount of sales with that segment, or achieve X amount of gross profit with that segment.

The first step is to develop your strategic plan, and then to create expectations for your sales force that directly supports that strategic plan.

commissioned salespeople were content to call on their friends and weren’t doing the harder work of calling on new prospects. He wasn’t automated and didn’t believe his veteran sales force would accurately and thoroughly complete weekly call reports. His sales cycle (capital equipment) was long, and he didn’t want to wait until he saw actual sales numbers. Those sales could occur 12 to 18 months after the first sales call. He determined to measure his sales forces’ activity, (calling on new prospects) not the results (sales to new prospects). We struggled with a way to easily, fairly and accurately measure the activity of calling on new prospects. As we discussed the possibilities, we realized that every customer’s name was on the database. We also noted that every quote was produced by a sales assistant in the office, who typed each quote individually for all the salespeople. Bingo! Suppose we had the sales assistant keep track of quotes made to companies not on the database? We couldn’t measure sales calls made to prospects, but we could measure the next best thing—quotes made to new prospects. The system would be easy, accurate, and fair. Having decided that, it was an easy step to give each salesperson a quarterly expectation for the number of “quotes made to new prospects.” Our strategic initiative, “Gain market share,” turned into a measurable expectation for each salesperson, “Generate X quotes per month to prospects not on the database.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 42 ›

What, you don’t have a strategic plan? That’s too bad. You are definitely at a disadvantage—but not disqualified. Just start at step two and create precise expectations for your sales force. Develop a list of the three to 10 most important things you want them to do. Bringing in a certain amount of sales or gross profits should be one of them, but only one of them.

Next, make sure that your list of expectations is easily, accurately and fairly measurable. This can be difficult. Much of your ability to manage your sales force depends on your ability to measure sales behaviors.

MILESI WATERBORNE SYSTEM PAINT

If you’re highly automated and use effective sales force software, it’ll be a snap. If you’re not effectively automated, it’ll be much more difficult. For example, one of my clients wanted his sales force to call on new prospects. His business was growing, and his salespeople were happy. But he was sure that there was additional market share to be had in accounts that were not being cultivated. He felt his straight

Let’s review: STEP ONE: Develop a strategic plan. STEP TWO: Create a set of most important sales behaviors. STEP THREE: Fine-tune them until they’re easily, fairly, accurately

measurable. STEP FOUR: Measure and reward the behavior you want. That can mean anything from publishing and posting those numbers every month, to revising your compensation formula, to making their pay dependent on performance of those activities. For example, you could measure the performance of the entire sales force each month and post it conspicuously for everyone to see. In my business, we measure five sales activities, combine the individual numbers, and post the composites for everyone to see. We post monthly totals, year to date, this year’s goals, and last year’s monthly totals. As an alternative, measure and post each salesperson’s performance individually. You can report each salesperson’s performance to him/her alone and talk about it in monthly conferences. Another technique is to make those numbers a topic for discussion at monthly sales meetings. But if you really want to add some power, refine your sales compensation plan to make each person’s pay dependent on performance on those numbers. This isn’t an article on sales force compensation. That’s an entire series on its own. However, it’s been my observation that most compensation plans don’t reward the behavior that they say they want. The executives say they want salespeople to do one thing, but their compensation plan rewards them for doing something else. For example, you may be paying your salespeople straight commission based on gross profits. Yet, you may be expecting them to open new accounts, promote certain product lines, or emphasize certain accounts. When you pay them purely by commission, you reward them for the easiest, richest sales. To encourage salespeople to do what “you want ’em to,” line your sales compensation plan up directly with your strategic plan. Directly reward those three to 10 behaviors that you developed earlier. Consider a performance-based plan that pays them for implementing the company’s strategies. STEP FIVE: Finally, step five is the single most powerful way to manage your people once you’ve done all this homework. Hold “accountability-holding, goal-setting, strategy-developing, resource-identifying” quarterly or monthly conferences with each of your salespeople. At these tune-up conferences do these things, in this sequence:

1. Hold them accountable for doing what they said they were going to do. Simply ask, “Did you do what you said you were going to do?” “Why or why not?” “What did you learn?” “What are you going to do differently next time?” 2. Help them set goals. Ask, “In light of the compensation plan, company expectations, and your situation, what will you be trying to accomplish in the next quarter (month)?” 3. Help them create a strategy. Ask, “How are you going to do that?” Make them answer in detail and have them commit that answer to writing. 42

SURFACEANDPANEL.COM

4. Finally, ask “How can I help?” and “What do you need to help you do it?” Hold these meetings regularly and you’ll see most of your sales force moving in the right direction.

There are some fringe benefits to this approach. First, salespeople who aren’t performing to expectation will begin to understand that they aren’t doing what you want, and may not be capable of it. It will be much clearer to you, and them, who needs to be replaced. Your conversations with your sales force will take on an entirely new attitude. It will no longer be “me versus you.” You will no longer be the authority figure who doesn’t understand the salesperson and who projects arbitrary dissatisfaction to him/her. Rather, the numbers become “the authority.” Your role changes. You are now a resource and a helper, looking at the numbers with your salesperson, and asking how you can help. Managing becomes easier. Finally, the amount of internal political maneuvering within your sales force decreases dramatically. Considering the numbers, it no longer matters who “butters you up,” or who you like better than someone else. Your sales force is now free to focus on the important issues. This five-step process will make your life easier, increase the productivity of your sales force, and provide an ongoing solution to the problem of “getting ’em to do what you want ’em to.”

SELF-ANALYSIS Answer “Yes” or “No” to each of the following questions. 1. Do you have a strategic plan? 2. Have you created three to 10 expectations for your sales force which directly support that plan? 3. Are each of those expectations easily, fairly, and accurately measured? 4. Do you systematically publish the sales force’s performance on those numbers? 5. Do you regularly make the numbers a subject of conversation at sales meetings? 6. Does your compensation plan directly reward the three to 10 expectations? 7. Do you hold regular “accountability, goal setting, strategy developing, resource identifying” quarterly or monthly conferences with each of your salespeople?

If you answered “Yes” to all the questions, you shouldn’t have read this article—you’re doing everything right. If you have some “No’s,” each of them represents an area on which to focus in order to strengthen your sales management. s p — Dave Kahle is a leading sales authority and author of numerous books, including How to Sell Anything to Anyone Anytime.

B HELLMAN-CHANG FURNITURE LOOKS TO FUTURE GROWTH WITH A RELOCATION AND UPDATED PRACTICES BY BILL ESLER

eautiful furniture and interior appointments are inherently marketable. Pieces with a story behind them…even more so. Furniture designers Hellman-Chang has both, with arresting designs created and produced by a business rooted in a storybook tale of woodcraft that commands extraordinary prices. Dan Hellman and Eric Chang met when they were 10 and shared a love of woodworking that they indulged in during high school in a basement workshop in Brooklyn. Years later and after pursuing different career paths, they met up once again in Brooklyn, where they helped establish and embody the “Brooklyn Renaissance” with their sleek, timeless designs. Neither formally studied furniture design—Chang having studied finance and marketing in college and Hellman studying classical guitar performance. “I worked at an artists’ agency representing other artists,” says Hellman. Chang helped start a successful New York marketing agency. “But we both moved into furniture pretty quickly.” While they are self-taught in furniture design, the duo are well-schooled on the technical side of woodworking. And perhaps because they lacked that conventional training, their work is idiosyncratic and unique. “We have a passion for making furniture and trusting our own eye for what are good propositions and what is aesthetically pleasing,” says Hellman. “The market then responds to that. Most pieces get a good response and some are not very popular—we don’t bat a thousand. But as a large body of work, we definitely have a look, and a design and an appeal—design vocabulary, so to speak—that we feel our customers come back to us for.” This combination of design and woodcraft allows for extraordinarily innovative designs, yet springs from techniques in casework and joinery that push their pieces into a category all their own. When HellmanChang launched in 2011 their reputation took off quickly with the introduction of their Z table, and soon their Brooklyn showroom was buzzing with activity as wellheeled patrons ponied up for their unique bespoke designs—some selling for more than $20,000.

DESIGNS AND FINISHES The furnishings produced by Hellman-Chang are almost sculptural, with curving surfaces embedded with brass, carved solid woods and flat-paneled wood veneers. Each piece is unified by rich, artisanal hand finishes that reveal the wood grain either explicitly or subtly—cerused, bleached, dyed, stained—but always there. Some designers must return to the drawing board to adapt their vision to the practicalities of production, but for Hellman-Chang, joinery and casework are inherent to their designs, which are almost immediately executable. This makes each piece—bureaus, tables, sideboards—a design expressive of the vernacular of traditional woodwork, as integrated as a classic craftsman piece. The energy flowing through the individual pieces is carried out to the finishes, which largely reveal the underlying woodgrains. “Most everything that we do is wood that is stained and colored, bleached in some instances, sealed, maybe glazed or cerused, and then top coated,” says Hellman. “All for that open-pore, close-to-the-wood look.” Wood species for lumber and veneers gravitate to oak and walnut. “We use a combination of solids and veneers as our main building materials, we accent with brass for pulls, inlays and things like that,” explains Hellman. “On the wood side, if it is shapely, it is solid wood carved. If it’s flat, it is veneer. So dining tabletops, flat doors, will be an MDF core with veneers on both sides.” While Chang leads a design team in Brooklyn as creative director, Hellman is the company’s operations manager and technical designer, translating everything into drawings—done on SolidWorks—to guide the production of each workpiece. “I’m very much a numbers guy,” says Hellman, who had a double major in statistics. “I actually do all the engineering of the furniture.”

MOMENTUM AND EXPANSION With everything done by hand, including the multi-step finishes cured solely by air drying, the 5,500-square-foot Brooklyn shop soon maxed out its capacity, and the duo began planning to move to larger quarters. Finding this was simply impractical in metropolitan New York City, so Chang and Hellman looked elsewhere. They found a welcome setting in Dawsonville, Georgia, and have expanded their production facilities in a 32,000-square-foot facility there. The momentum of the business soon overwhelmed the seven Brooklyn craftsmen, each carving and joining by hand, with signature hand-finishes applied by a master craftsman. As back orders rose, Hellman and Chang were intent on planning a way forward that would resolve these challenges. Recognizing that hand-carving surfaces and joints was a production CONTINUED ON PAGE 46 ›

bottleneck, the duo commissioned a customized Thermwood CNC, so the workpiece creation could be automated. “We worked with them to adapt one of their base models,” Hellman explains. “They beefed it up a bit. They raised the Z-axis a bit to accommodate an aggregate cutter that was also controlled by the C-axis, so we could do some complex joinery on things.” “Basically it is a lot of milling…we rough out a shape, and we mill the final,” he says. “And we use the aggregate to cut critical joints.” In addition to cutting and refining joints, the CNC is now used instead of hand carving to shape the contoured, solid-wood surfaces that are a signature of many Hellman-Chang designs. With the recent relocation, the CNC was simply unplugged in Brooklyn, shipped, and quickly resumed its work in Georgia. With the CNC taking on workpiece creation, the next challenge was finishing. Hellman-Chang relied on a master craftsman who, like many traditional specialists, used memory and feel in producing the finishes. But relying on a single individual’s skill and knowledge would not be scalable as business grew. The company’s longtime master finishing craftsman also relocated to Georgia to help maintain the quality of the finishes, but indicated he would be leaving the company down the road. To prepare for this change, the company brought on a professional with a background in architectural millwork finishing nearly two years ago. That person is now set to continue the high-quality work that has come to be expected of the brand. These specific finishing techniques are now mapped out in recipes and a local finishing supplies source was found, eliminating another production bottleneck. This required a transition to coatings from Renner, which went relatively smoothly. “Our new finishing manager helped us create very accurate step boards documenting how we create each of our standard finishes, so that we could grow the team around that,” says Hellman. “Because we now are using a local vendor, we needed to change everything we were using, down to the bleach, the different dyes we were using. We were still using the vendor in New York and having it shipped, but we needed to develop a more sustainable way to do it now that we had relocated.” “The choice of Renner was driven by our local supplier who we know and trust, and that’s who they represent,” says Hellman. “We saw we would get the service at many levels.” Subtle differences in the coatings are largely undetectable to customers, he adds. “You can over-catalyze it to get a floor quality finish, but we don’t even need to do that,” says Hellman. “It’s hard enough for even our dining table so it seems to have the best of all worlds, It’s got a nice hand to it. Our customers who are really high end…they like it.” 46

In the process of designing workflow for the new production facility, Hellman-Chang retained Industrial Wood Process Solutions, Inc., with principal Joe Baggett guiding equipment purchases (new planer, angle saw, and their first clamp carrier) and the arrangement of work centers as the company moved from bench-made to factory workflow. Baggett’s expertise in finishing was also tapped, and a forced curing system was added for the first time at Hellman-Chang, in the form of a batch oven from Prime Heat. The oven speeds the curing process by using a combination of warm and hot air and infrared energy. SCALING FOR A GROWING BUSINESS With these changes, Hellman-Chang has laid initial groundwork for a business that can grow its output volume. But getting to fully scalable processes will take more time. “Arguably our largest challenge is how to scale it,” says Hellman. “Because now we gravitate toward bench-made furniture, but benchmade is difficult to scale. We desperately want to have the stations that are fully set up by process, but because we don’t just build cabinets, we have so many different processes that require different set ups…we haven’t really cracked that nut yet.” s p

PANEL SAW INNOVATIONS Making table saws obsolete?

P

anel saws have been around almost a century, but innovations over the years have continued to increase the machine’s functionality and safety, making it a valuable addition to shops across the globe. Vertical panel saws seem to be the most popular option these days, with a design that frees up valuable floor space in a garage shop or on a factory floor. The most innovative recent update to panel saws is meeting customer’s evolving needs for cutting all types of panels and fulfilling industrial applications beyond just wood, says Justin Rinaldi with Safety Speed Manufacturing. Enter the company’s first “Smart” Panel Saw, the EF5 “Tornado” industrial panel saw. “This is the smartest and safest vertical panel saw in its price range,” says Rinaldi. “This vertical panel saw features the first brushless motor of its kind to be mounted on a vertical panel saw frame.” “Automatically adjusting the speed of the blade based on internal calculations within the motor, it maintains the proper speed and torque for cutting jobs successfully, with little effort,” he says. “The EF5 ensures the cut quality and the safest cutting operations for businesses cutting different types of material, especially with different thicknesses.” If an operator uses their EF5 machine inappropriately or the machine needs routine maintenance, the motor will shut down and display an error message on the keypad, explains Rinaldi. This is then easily referenced

SAFETY SPEED MANUFACTURING Safety Speed’s EF5 Panel Saw features an efficient three-phase motor, only requiring single-phase input (120 or 220V) and an automatic torque control for tougher cuts. A reduction of wear items within the motor ultimately decreases future maintenance on the motor. The brushless motor also provides a quieter operation and a reduction of weight.

for solving the issue while also protecting the operator, the motor and other components from more serious problems. “The motor decreases maintenance requirements and the motor life is extended for several years over a standard, direct current motor by eliminating brushes, while also removing fields and armatures,” he says. “It’s engineered with circuitry and less moving components, reducing heat buildup in the motor.” Rinaldi says that customers continue to look for American-made options, adding that the Minnesota-based company has not experienced supply-chain woes for its vertical panel saw production. He adds that the future of panel saws is bright, predicting they will “hopefully obsolete the table saw. Panel saws will forever be the safest and most accurate way for breaking down panels.” “It’s in our name, but in reality, our machines are engineered with many key features keeping your safety in mind while saving your back,” says Rinaldi. “Vertical panel saws provide the safest cutting method by minimizing blade exposure to the operator, and reducing contact with it. Ever see a table saw that does that? Gravity and physics are your friend when cutting vertically!” CONTINUED ON PAGE 50 ›

They’re confident that they can meet and exceed customer expectations every time they use the Srtriebig,” says owner Steve Morris. With a Srtriebig sitting snug on the floor of the warehouse, one employee can load, turn, cut in both directions, and unload pieces safely and quickly, without disrupting other things happening in the shop. “It’s definitely increased our efficiency. One employee can do the work of two safely while providing a better service,” Morris said. “From the first cut we have found the quality of construction and operation to be first rate. It’s been easy to maintain, with parts and service a phone call away.” In addition to wood, Srtriebig saws cut melamine-coated substrates, plastics, composites, solid surface and nonferrous metals. Their fully welded, heavy-duty frames stay square over time and their controls are simple and logical. Invented and manufactured by Swiss engineering, each Srtriebig saw is tested at the factory to ensure its accuracy to .004”, approximately the thickness of a piece of paper. Striebig saws are legendary for pristine chip free cuts, particularly with melamine products. Striebig saws are also available to cut large panels, up to 10 ft. x 30 ft. Striebig panel saws are available with performance-enhancing options such as digital measuring, split-blade scoring, programmable electronic positioning, angle cutting, dado cutting, V-grooving, and two-speed and powerful variable speed motors. dge banding continues to be one of the most efficient and reliable techniques to cover the raw edge of wooden panels that are used to make furniture—but its application has expanded to include cabinets and countertops. Edgebanding offers the perfect finishing touch for decorative surfaces. Seamless furniture looks or accented designs can be achieved by coordinating or contrasting the decor surface and texture with the edgebanding. There are multiple choices today in edgebanding materials, finishes and application methods. The biggest trend in today’s edgebanding is choice—in all these things and more! After a long, weary two-plus years of dealing with COVID, today’s homeowners are focusing more on comfort and ease—two things designers and manufacturers are only too happy to provide. Many companies offer a multitude of colors, designs and textures in their edgebanding options, and most also offer various thicknesses for different types of usage—thinner options for fine furniture and thicker options for more high-traffic uses including cabinets and countertops. At present, a range of edgebanding materials, including polyvinyl chloride (PVC), wood, and resins, are available in the market due to advancements in technology. S&P recently spoke with a few of the companies that specialize in edgebanding to get their takes on trends in the industry and how they have been coping with supply chain issues and high fuel costs.

INDUSTRY UPDATES Peter Tuenker, managing director of IMA Schelling Group USA, says one big change in the industry can be traced to the recent, rapid increase in “fast fashion.” “We have been looking at our ability to offer our customers quick access to a large variety of edgebanding materials,” he says. “We have customers who use more than 100 different types of edgebanding materials on a daily basis. Therefore, you will see our solutions coming to the market shortly that will enable our customers to access hundreds of coils of edgebanding material automatically within seconds and reduce any downtime or manual interference by operators.” Michaela Gimpl, decor management expert with EGGER Wood Products, says she’s heard from designers who want it all—convincing real-wood looks coupled with the performance benefits of TFL and laminates. “End grain edgebanding reproduces the look of sawn timber,” she says. “So when combined with matching TFL/laminates and longitudinal edgebanding, it creates an authentic solid wood effect. It looks as beautiful as nature’s version, but delivers more durability and hygienic properties.” And Phillip McEwen, EGGER’s head of product management, says the most frequent need voiced by their customers “is the continued need for ideally matched edgebanding to create harmonious designs.” “There are always advancements in edgebanding material, tooling or machine technology that influence the quality of an edge banded product,” adds Tuenker. “Our industry has come a long way with technologies like laser edgebanding, high precision tooling and especially in the variety of edgebanding materials to give end consumers an almost perfect product that in many cases is also sustainable—which is also very important to our customers these days.” There are also new developments on the adhesive side of edgebanding, says Ken VandenBout, digital marketing specialist with Stiles Machinery. “Adhesive suppliers have been working to improve the hotmelts for better aesthetics along with increased temperature and moisture resistance. We have also been working in this area and have released a new universal pre-melt

system that can be used for both PUR (polyurethane reactive) and EVA/PO/PP hotmelts. This saves space in the machine and makes it a simple process for the operator to switch between the different adhesives which in turn offers customers the most flexibility. In our current environment, having this flexibility is more important than ever.” VandenBout adds he has seen more customers moving to edgebanding machines with automation. “[It’s] not necessarily an innovative update but a big update to the edgebanding application,” he says. “Many customers are looking for easy and quick setups using servo controls and positioning instead of the manual adjustments. They are also increasing in the use of return conveyors to further automate the process.” This automation helps in several ways, including with recent labor shortages, he explains. “Customers have been experiencing strong order intakes but have been having difficulty in finding employees to help with the increased production requirements,” says VandenBout. “Adding the automation allows them to work with fewer people while also making it easier for an inexperienced worker to operate the machines.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 54›

“Our industry has come a long way with technologies like laser edgebanding, high precision tooling and especially in the variety of edgebanding materials to give end consumers an almost perfect product that in many cases is also sustainable—which is also very important to our customers these days.” PETER TUENKER, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF IMA SCHELLING GROUP USA

PROBLEM SOLVING The tight labor market, combined with global supply chain issues and high fuel costs have affected nearly every business and industry across the world, say company officials, who add they are doing what they can to overcome these obstacles. “We are not immune to these challenges,” says Tuenker. “We are working hard with our vendors to overcome supply issues and we look for alternatives in the supply chain where possible. We believe that this issue will be with us for a good while going forward.” McEwen agrees, adding that “EGGER recently optimized our product offering to ensure the best use of resources and in-stock availability for our customers. One of the benefits that EGGER is able to offer is our Decor Match System, with matching thermally fused laminate, laminates and edgebanding, all produced by EGGER and available in stock with short lead times. This saves customers time and money, since all matching decor materials are coming from a single source.” VandenBout says that some suppliers and customers have used creative ways to counter supply chain challenges. “Suppliers

and customers have had to look at their operations and find ways to be more efficient,” he says. “In some cases, customers who were working with MDF material have had to switch to melamine/particle board due to cost and availability. In doing so, they may have switched from a non-edgebanding application to now requiring it. “We work with these customers to find the best solution to support their needs,” VandenBout continues. “From the machine supply aspect, we have a great program with our factory to keep machines moving through the production pipeline and to ensure we always have machines ready for when our customers need them.” LOOKING TO THE FUTURE Experts say the edgebanding market shows high growth which is inspired by the successive increases of industrial output, consumption, imports and exports, and capital investment for the last many years. “EGGER’s goal is to create the most authentic wood and material reproductions possible,” says Gimpl, “so we use real materials to inspire our design development. Continued innovations in digital printing allow increasingly accurate color and design reproductions with larger formats. For example, our wood and material reproductions can stretch nearly eight feet with no repeat in the decor pattern.” Stiles’ HOMAG Machinery Solutions is leading the way into the future by “constantly developing new innovations to provide customers with the best solutions for high-quality, efficient, and flexible edgebanding solutions,” says VandenBout. “Given the current market,” he says, “a lot of focus continues to be in the area of automation whether that be in software, machine design or even component level design. Specific examples would be the Universal Pre-melt unit, vacuum-storage and pre-heating working station for PUR adhesives, dust-flow control tooling and diamond insert tools for pre-milling. Our airTec (hot-air) technology for applying edgebanding for a zero-edge quality performance continues to be a leader in the zero-edge market while continuing to evolve to further open the doors to the zero-edge market for all customers small to large.” IMA Schelling Group continues its journey to bring the most advanced automated systems to its customers, says Tuenker. “The main focus going forward for our customers are the challenges to find qualified labor and the constant pressure from the market to diversify product offerings and bring them to market quickly,” he says. “Our customers are the leaders of their industries and they count on us to help them to get better at making these products.” s p CANTEK The Cantek MX370P Automatic Edge bander is designed to be a compact and durable edgebander offered at an affordable price. It is equipped with premilling, end trimming, flush trimming, corner rounding, PVC scraping, and buffing. User-friendly controls and adjustments allow for efficient changeovers of edge tape thicknesses between 0.4mm & 3mm. From cabinet parts to cabinet doors, this edge bander can do it all.

KITCHEN SURFACE TRENDS:

Sophisticated, Sustainable

SURFACES STEAL THE SPOTLIGHT IN 2022

A

IMAGES COURTESY OF WILSONART

BY GWEN PETTER, DIRECTOR OF DESIGN FOR WILSONART

fter a year full of unpredictability, many of us gained a newfound appreciation for our kitchens and the many purposes they serve. The heart of the home is getting the attention it deserves as homeowners realize the importance of having a multi-faceted kitchen and are ready to invest in new solutions for the way we now live. According to a recent U.S. Houzz Kitchen Trends Study, homeowners are likely to focus on upgrades such as countertops, backsplashes, and other surface refreshes like island bases and cabinet fronts. These relatively easy updates can be transformative and deliver a dramatic new look in days. If you’re ready to set out on a kitchen surface overhaul, here are five design elements dominating kitchen surface trends in 2022:

1. NATURE-INSPIRED DESIGNS

As we all continue to spend more time at home, there has been a renewed sense of wanting to bring the outdoors in through natureinspired design elements. We’ve never needed the healing powers of nature more than we do now, so it’s no surprise that biophilic design—the practice of creating a closer connection to nature through building, design, and landscaping considerations—is set to be one of the top design trends this year. For kitchen surfaces, homeowners are seeking natural-looking materials that are also durable and easy to maintain. Stoneinspired looks, like marbles and granites, are highly sought after for

56

countertops, backsplashes, and islands and can be found in new colors and patterns in engineered quartz, solid surface, and even in high-pressure laminate (HPL) for more budget-conscious consumers. Natural textures are also in high demand. From the continued love of stones to the growing popularity of natural woven materials and exotic woodgrain looks, a textured finish can provide a whole new look and feel to a space.

2. RESIMERCIAL

Fueled by the decline in travel during the pandemic, homeowners are looking to replicate the sophisticated style and comforts of an upscale hotel or luxury resort in their homes—further blurring the lines between residential and commercial design. White marbles, especially Carrara marble, continue to be one of the most sought-after looks to achieve this sophisticated, resimercial style and looks beautiful when incorporating a waterfall edge. Thanks to engineered materials like ultra-durable, acrylic solid surface, homeowners can achieve the luxurious look of marble without the price tag and maintenance of natural stone. Industrial design is another staple in this trend that continues to evolve as a modern standard. Evoking a minimalist style, this look is softer and more delicate in direction and illustrated through sleek and sometimes darker surface selections perfect for modern spaces. CONTINUED ON PAGE 58›

3. SUSTAINABLE AND SANITARY

More and more homeowners are showing interest in sustainable alternatives to natural products; alternative materials including laminate, solid surface, and quartz mimic the best of Mother Nature without impacting the environment, offering appealing options for eco-conscious consumers. The pandemic has also led to a focus on cleanliness and regular sanitation of high-touch surfaces like drawers and cabinets, yet not all surfaces are built to handle this challenge. Homeowners prioritizing this are seeking specific features like non-porous, high-performance materials. HPL is a great choice for homeowners looking for a sustainable and sanitary surface option—plus, Wilsonart HD Laminate is also available with antimicrobial protection that inhibits the growth of bacteria, mold, and mildew to keep the surface looking and smelling better, longer.

4. MULTI-FUNCTIONAL FORMATS

Our new hybrid schedules have created the need for “zoning” and creating spaces within our homes for each activity. More than any other space, the kitchen has taken on a multi-purpose role, and the need for flexible design has become essential for today’s homeowners. From cooking and homework to Zoom calls and entertaining, having a countertop material with an on-trend look that can withstand the wear and tear from near-constant use and cleaning is a high priority. Wilsonart Home offers beautiful, on-trend options for virtually every surface in the home with performance features and price points to suit any lifestyle and budget. But multi-functionality isn’t the only element in high demand. Homeowners are also seeking more elbow room, requesting larger islands, and even double islands for added space to accommodate the range of activities.

5. HIGH-STYLE, LOW MAINTENANCE

Our new home-centric lifestyles mean our homes need to perform as never before. Homeowners are increasingly seeking high-style surfaces that will live up to the rigors of everyday life, but which don’t require a lot of work to maintain. While granite, marble, and other natural stones typically top homeowners’ wish lists for their aesthetics, not everyone desires the cost and ongoing maintenance that comes with such materials. Also emerging from this low maintenance trend, traditional tile is out, and large-format slab backsplashes are in, made from countertop slabs that wrap around the back wall for a bold, grout-free statement. Besides being easy to clean, this look creates a natural design flow from countertop to the wall for a clean, modern look that ties the entire room together. s p For more kitchen design inspiration, visit wilsonart.com.

he landscape of how people work has changed drastically these past few years. With workers returning to the office, there has been a dramatic shift in what employees expect when working in the office, whether full time or on a hybrid schedule.

According to a recent Steelcase survey of nearly 5,000 office workers in 11 countries about what’s most important to them in the workplace, most are interested in having a private place to work: 64% – Spaces for hybrid collaboration 62% – Single-person enclaves for hybrid meetings 61% – Privacy 58% – Workstations with full or partial enclosure 57% – Reservable workspaces Ironically, a majority of respondents stated they were willing to trade remote work days to get private workspaces. When asked which they would prefer, 55% would work from home two or less days per week if they had an assigned desk in the office, while only 45% prefer to work from home three or more days a week and not have an assigned desk. Steelcase expanded its colors within the line “to inspire the designer while creating usable options across a range of products from furniture to vertical spaces.” KARI MILLER, PRODUCT MANAGER, GLOBAL SURFACE MATERIALS, STEELCASE

‹ CONTINUED FROM PAGE 66

For many employees, having become used to working in the home, a dedicated workspace reflects their desire to have the privacy of a home office, but in an office setting. “Unable to find the privacy they’re seeking at work; it should not be surprising that 45% of people prefer working from home. Their work-from-home experience during the pandemic has shown them the value of having a place to call their own—70% of people globally have either an office or a dedicated zone within their home where they have more control over their environment. While spaces in the office for hybrid collaboration ranked first on the list of things people feel are more important than before the pandemic, it’s clear that spaces where people can effectively work alone, without distractions, are critically important for people to feel their office is a great place to work,” according to Steelcase’s findings. However, in the wake of many employees having a hybrid work schedule—working both remotely and at the office—many organizations have not received the memo on employees’ continual need for designated workspaces at the office. Instead, many organizations have redesigned their offices without assigned employee workspaces. “In fact, organizations are shifting to more unassigned spaces as they adjust to hybrid work and new office occupancy patterns. At large organizations (10,000+ employees), 15% of employees have lost assigned desks, compared to pre-pandemic; overall, regardless of the size of the organization, there has been a 10% decrease in employees with assigned desks. The unintended result is people feel a sense of homelessness if they come to the office and can’t find a place to work alone,” the survey stated. Yet, the data is clear: “People want and need a place to call home where they can control and adapt their environment.” This is where companies that specialize in laminated panels and configurable surfaced panel products have stepped in. Steelcase is one of those companies that recognized the changing work environments early on with its introduction of products that enable employees to control and adapt their work environment to their personalized needs. According to Kari Miller, product manager, Global Surface Materials, Steelcase, “The workplace is now requiring a range of spaces which, in turn, requires a range of material options,” she added. “By using compelling materials, screens and panels can

68

SURFACEANDPANEL.COM

provide visual interest (almost artistic elements) to a space.” When the Steelcase Flex Collection was introduced in 2019, it included movable desks, tables, carts, screens and accessories that could be easily rearranged on demand to create dynamic spaces for collaborative teams. More recently, Steelcase added Personal Spaces to the company’s larger Steelcase Flex Collection “so people could easily shift between individual and teamwork.” “Personal Spaces ‘breaks the grid’ by delivering three application planning typologies—hex, blended and 90 degree—all of which provide varying levels of user flexibility and control, while meeting the fluctuating density needs of the workplace,” according to Steelcase Design Studios. Two key elements—desks and privacy wraps—create Personal Spaces that make the workspace feel more like home, as well as provide a range of privacy levels and space planning approaches. When combined, it can support over a dozen possible configurations and create clusters of individual workspaces within a larger team environment. For instance, within the hex footprint, the 120-degree trapezoid shaped desk can be reoriented in four positions supporting varied work activities. The desks offer an array of laminate and veneered desk options, including one style that features a high-pressure laminate with a 3mm edge profile to match the top’s finish. The collection includes high-pressure laminate wood shelving units in 2-unit, 3-unit, 4-unit, or 5-unit heights that can be combined with high-pressure laminate doors, which are 3/5" thick, and either 15-3/4" wide (1 wide) or 31-1/2" wide (2 wide), High-pressure laminate infills can also be added to the shelving units. In addition, Steelcase expanded its colors within the line “to inspire the designer while creating usable options across a range of products from furniture to vertical spaces,” Miller said. “These are the types of spaces people really need now,” says David Cooper, director, product marketing at Steelcase, adding “we’re giving people the heightened level of privacy, control and comfort they need to effectively do hybrid work.” Miller added that she expects in the future, surfaced panels will continue to provide visual and acoustic privacy and “the surface will be an opportunity for soft and tactile expressions.” s p

 KLEIBERIT KLEIBERIT’s 605.1 is a universal product to be used in both industrial and handicraft applications. A reactive onecomponent adhesive based on silane terminated polymers (STP), also known as a hybrid adhesive, 605.1 has excellent processing properties in terms of viscosity, pressing times, setting speed, and stability of the glue line, all while meeting the highest resistance to water, steam, heat and cold (tested according to DIN EN 204, D4 as well as DIN 14257). Particularly noteworthy is the universal application due to extraordinary adhesion properties on almost all materials with each other/to one another, except brass, copper, PP, PE and Teflon. The adhesive is easy to apply with a spatula, brush or roller and does not foam. Selective application from a spray bottle is also possible due to the ideal viscosity and flow properties. This innovative solution is completely customizable and allows for infinite design possibilities. IWF Booth #C2262, C2366 www.richelieu.com

PET panels are currently being used in cabinetry for multifamily housing, medical and dental applications, boat interiors, and residences. Manufactured in the U.S., MIRLUX panels are less expensive than imported acrylic products from Europe. MIRLUX Premium Panel and its corresponding edgebanding is currently available in white, light grey, tan, dark grey, graphite, black, deep blue, and jade green in high gloss or super matte finish. “It was fantastic working with the team at 526 Media Group. Initially, we approached them with a very aggressive timeline for a livestream event and they executed PERFECTLY. The communication throughout the process and the support was top notch. Best of all, their pricing was very fair. If you’ve been tasked with running a professional livestream event and don’t know where to start, I recommend you reach out to 526.”

WITH

Amir Bakhtyari PRESIDENT, SYNERGY THERMAL FOILS

Q.

Supply chain disruptions have rocked our industry. How are wood products manufacturers addressing supply problems? Are you seeing light at the end of the tunnel now that the COVID-19 pandemic is transitioning into its endemic phase?

Q.

The supply crunch created by COVID is not over. Demand is far outpacing supply in most cases. Global supply chain disruptions are especially pronounced for large cabinet manufacturers who require high volumes of material. They are at times still finding it difficult to get all the needed quantities for just about everything from hinges to handles to MDF. What used to be standard delivery times of two to three weeks are now three to four months or more.

The war in Ukraine has poured fuel on the fire. For one, U.S. sanctions have virtually shut off imports of Baltic birch plywood from Russia, which has been widely used in North America, second to domestic suppliers. Russia also makes a lot of MDF, mostly sold to cabinet and furniture manufacturers in Europe and the Middle East. Those companies are now looking for alternative sources, which puts added price pressure on the global MDF market.

Our response has included stocking up inventories of foil at our expanded South Florida facility and adding a warehouse on the West Coast to service customers. We can cover the customers who buy one roll each of eight colors, but when a customer needs material for a 150-unit project, we encourage them to plan ahead. We used to rely on customers’ historical order data to determine our inventory levels. Now we ask large-volume buyers to provide us with forecasts and to place their orders much further ahead. Most of them are doing that and our focus is having it stocked at our warehouse that is closest to them. Some customers will order it today even if they won’t need it for six months from now. They would rather have the inventory on their floor than wait until the last minute and hope that it’s available. We obviously encourage them to plan ahead as best as they can. The bottom line is that the days of “just-in-time” manufacturing are gone. Anybody who is trying to do just-in-time is never going to have all the materials they are looking for when they need it. I don’t think just-in-time manufacturing methodology is coming back this year or next. It’s more like hand-to-mouth manufacturing right now. Of course, we don’t want that to be our customers’ experience, but it’s impossible for us to estimate what volumes of each design to inventory and we are totally powerless to what happens over the water. At times, we see the third container come in before the first. Sometimes, our East Coast shipments will come in before our West Coast shipments. Other times, the container will be off the ship for a month waiting for the port to make it accessible to transport from the storage yard. 98

How has Russia’s invasion of Ukraine impacted the supply chain situation?

Another obvious, big impact of U.S. sanctions is rising fuel costs. These increases affect the delivery rates of all modes of transportation—ships, trains, and trucks—further adding to supply chain disruption price spikes. We’ve heard a lot of people say that it’s hard to make money because after they give someone a price, they turn around to buy the material and find it’s gone up double digits. That is not a reflection of our pricing but since we are part of mix, we hear about it.

Q.

What new or emerging design trends are you seeing in decorative surfacing products? We’ve seen a big shift away from dark colors. Hardly anybody wants Chocolate Pear anymore. Instead, it’s lighter wood colors that are more and more in demand. Shaker doors are immensely popular as are our super matte and high-gloss finishes. Grays are also still popular and we’re seeing more interest in blues. Every once in a while, someone will ask for green. That was never requested before! I think the biggest emerging trend is matching programs. I don’t hear a lot of cabinet or store fixture customers say they just want white oak or walnut foil anymore. What they really want is a white oak or walnut thermofoil that matches a specific brand of TFL or HPL. As a result, we are more and more engaged with all of the new and established North American panel laminators to see what matches we might offer based in many cases by our customers’ requests. s p
