It’s Springtime! The best time of the Year.

We hope that you all enjoyed Easter and Passover last month, wonderful opportunities to spend some time with friends and family and celebrate the beauty of life with the ones you love. This month, we hope that our May issue inspires you to continue spending quality time with your loved ones, whether you decide to go on a fun tropical getaway or weekend staycation for two.

I continue to maintain my optimism about the future of this city, which was recently further enforced by the comments made by nationally renown economists. Here's a brief excerpt: “Orlando and Tampa maintain good job markets and the housing prices are to go up again and again, especially in the luxury market. In addition, people are friendly and eight out of ten are moving there from everywhere in the United States...”

The Economists predict that 2023 will be a quote: “A terrific year for home sales… Overall, we're feeling good about housing and we expect this year to be a great year for home sales and new home construction.”

As customary, this entire issue is again packed with great articles and interviews, unmatched in our region and we remain proud that we continually raise the bar of publishing excellence here at home. We welcome your input, criticism or praise and ask that you continue to participate by emailing us at: info@styleToMe.com and sharing your thoughts.

Here, at Style Magazines, we continue to forge ahead with our efforts to support our fantastic advertisers in getting their message across to you, our readers, and we work tireless to keep you informed with Style!

Have a wonderful Happy Mother’s Day!

INTO ART & CONSERVATION

The Florida Aquarium is making waves as the first aquarium in the United States to host the Ocean Decade Exhibition, a poignant and vibrant global art showcase aimed at raising awareness about the importance of the ocean. Not only that, but the aquarium is also the first venue to host the exhibition’s digital version, making it even more accessible to visitors.

The Ocean Decade Exhibition highlights the 7 Principles of Ocean Literacy through unique and thought-provoking digital works of art, with the goal of inspiring greater ocean knowledge and conservation. Visitors can immerse themselves in this awe-inspiring exhibition at the CIBC Aquatic Lounge, located on the aquarium’s second floor. The artwork is vividly displayed on large digital screens, punctuated with key messages on the central importance of the ocean.

Through a series of animated displays and visual storytelling, guests will discover and learn about unique perspectives of life underwater and reflect on the ocean’s crucial role in sustaining life on Earth. The Ocean Decade Exhibition is included in the price of general admission, making it an accessible and educational experience for everyone.

This innovative concept was conceived by Richard Vevers’ The Ocean Agency, a non-profit organization famous for the award-winning Netflix Original Documentary, Chasing Coral. In partnership with Adobe and

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), The Ocean Decade Exhibition is an official contribution to the UN Ocean Decade.

The Ocean Agency and Adobe engaged The Florida Aquarium, a leader in ocean conservation, to be the first of what will be many important opportunities to connect with people around the world and emphasize the importance of our oceans. Adobe created the experience with original illustrations and designed displays with animated artworks from their creator community.

Visitors to The Florida Aquarium will not only be mesmerized by the beauty of the ocean’s creatures but also leave with a deeper appreciation of the importance of ocean conservation. The Ocean Decade Exhibition is a must-see attraction, showcasing the power of art to raise awareness and inspire change.

Tampa Museum of Art: Now - June 4th

Salman Toor’s exhibition, “No Ordinary Love,” showcases over 45 paintings and works on paper created between 2019 and 2022. Toor combines historical painting motifs with contemporary moments to build new imaginative worlds. His art challenges traditional ideas of power and sexuality by featuring brown, queer figures at the center and engaging with art history. Toor, who was

born in Lahore, Pakistan, and now resides and works in New York City, draws from his experiences and viewpoints to explore the queer experience in both his adopted and ancestral countries. He merges sensual pleasure with satire and employs his vast knowledge of European, American, and South Asian painting traditions in his work.

SHASHIN: JAPANESE PHOTOGRAPHS FROM THE MEIJI ERA, 1870-1900

Museum of Fine Arts St. Petersburg: Now - July 23rd

The collection of nearly 50 photographs from the MFA Collection exemplifies the skill and innovation of Japanese photographers from 1870–1900, and showcases the ways in which photography served multiple functions in Japanese society during this time. These photographs were not only mementos for remembrance and collectibles for tourists, but also served to further the notion of photography as an art form. Each photograph in the collection is a beautiful and superbly crafted work that demonstrates the artistic sensibility of Japanese woodblock prints merged with photographic technology. Through the works of photographers like Kusakabe Kimbei and Ogawa Kazumasa, we can see the unique and innovative ways that Japanese photographers adapted European techniques to create a distinctly Japanese style.

MAKEUP TRENDS

Hey there, beauty lovers! We’re only in May, but it feels like there are already thousands of new beauty trends out there. Every single day, people are discovering new must-have products, re-discovering old favorites, or better yet, uncovering new makeup trends that will transform your style. It’s a wild world out there, but fear not! We’re here to help cut through the noise and share with you three of the best makeup trends to try in 2023.

90’s Brown Lip Gloss

Get ready to channel your inner ‘90s queen with the return of the brown lip gloss. This trend has taken the beauty world by storm, and we’re totally here for it. From Hailey Bieber’s “brownie glazed lips” to Fenty Beauty’s OG Hot Chocolit shade in a plumping formula, everyone is rocking this look. But let’s not forget that brown lip gloss has been a mainstay in Black culture since the ‘90s. So, whether you line your lips with a dark brown lip liner or opt for a lip gloss in the gorgeous hue, you can’t go wrong with this timeless trend.

Radiant Glow

Are you ready to shine like a diamond? The Hyper Glow trend is all about creating a glowing, almost mirror-like finish to your skin. Models at Alturzarra, Proenza Schouler, and Victoria Beckham showed us how it’s done with the right highlighter and strategic placement. But don’t worry, you don’t need to be a pro to achieve this look. With skin care-infused products, lightweight textures, and ethereal finishes, you can create a dewy, watery effect that will make you shine bright like a diamond.

Bare-Faced Beauty

It’s time to let your skin breathe and embrace the “less is more” mentality with the Bare it All trend. Base makeup formulas will start to take a step away from heavy textures, and people will be using more tinted serums, moisturizers, and SPFs instead of heavy matte foundations. As makeup artist Mary Phillips says, “Faces are meant to be seen.” So, go ahead and let your natural beauty shine through. After all, there’s nothing more beautiful than feeling confident in your own skin.

So there you have it, folks, three of the best makeup trends to try in 2023. So, go ahead and experiment with these fun and playful trends and let your inner beauty shine!

SPRING Into Haven

Foodies of Tampa rejoice over the quirky, charming, and welcoming atmosphere that is Haven –a staple to the neighborhood. Haven’s menu is not for the conventional and Executive Chef Chad Johnson provided us a preview of some of Haven’s spring menu inspirations. Haven is Chef’s culinary playground, so those with the most adventurous palate are being called to the table.

Executive Chef Chad Johnson and Chef de Cuisine Martin de Jesus curated a Spring menu filled with a delectable twist at every bite. The evening began with a Scallop Crudo made with green papaya, mint, basil, fresno pepper, and passion fruit nam pla follow by Roasted Fluke made of a pawn dumpling and hot and sour egg drop broth. Chef Chad put a spin on American Chinese cuisine and made it a meal to remember.

If you haven’t already guessed, Chef Chad embraces cuisine from around the world and makes it his own. The Roasted Quail paired perfectly with a Lebanese cous cous with fried fruits and pecan muhammara. Following that dish was a Coal Grilled Octopus with potato, Hungarian peppers, salsa verde, urfa pepper aioli.

Two items that I can confidently say I never thought I’d ever consume is a Suckling Pig Cannelloni paired with truffle cheese, sage, trumpet mushroom, and next up, Duck Hearts – yes, you read that right! Duck Hearts over creamy quinoa and aji verde. The winner for the night goes to the Haven Old Fashioned which warmed me right up as it was paired with a tender Bourbon Aged Strip Loin.

Growing up in Paducah, Kentucky, Chef Chad Johnson decided to pursue a culinary career after spending time at his best friend’s family restaurant. He attended the French Culinary Institute in New York where he was determined to learn all he could from the famed staff which included modern culinary luminaries like Jacques Pepin, Andre Soltner and Alain Sailhac. He paid for his own tuition, came in early and stayed late – always pressing his instructors for more information. From these legends, Johnson learned the techniques and traditions that have made French chefs leaders in dining for hundreds of years.

His natural passion for great food combined with his French Culinary Institute education and exposure to some of the country’s best restaurants have all influenced Johnson’s signature modern cuisine at Haven.

You will be doing yourself a favor by visiting Haven and experiencing Chef Chad’s culinary creativity. You never know what you’re going to get, and that is what makes it an experience you’ll never forget and certainly one you’ll be talking about for a while. What’s next for Sushi in 2023

As the world continues to embrace sushi as a culinary art form, the sushi industry is constantly evolving and innovating to keep up with changing tastes and preferences. Here are some of the top sushi trends to watch out for in 2023:

Sustainable

Sushi

In recent years, there has been a growing awareness of the environmental impact of the fishing industry. As a result, many sushi chefs and restaurants are beginning to prioritize sustainability in their sourcing practices. This means using only sustainably caught fish and supporting fishing practices that are environmentally responsible. In addition, many sushi restaurants are exploring alternative proteins, such as plant-based options, to reduce their reliance on seafood.

Fusion

Sushi

Sushi has long been associated with Japanese cuisine, but in recent years there has been a trend towards fusion sushi, which incorporates elements of other cuisines. For example, Mexican sushi might feature ingredients like avocado, jalapenos, and cilantro, while Korean sushi might incorporate kimchi or bulgogi. Fusion sushi is a great way for chefs to experiment with new flavors and textures, and it provides a unique twist on a classic dish.

DIY Sushi

Another trend that is gaining popularity is DIY sushi, which allows diners to create their own sushi rolls at the table. This interactive approach to dining is fun and engaging, and it allows guests to customize their meal to their individual tastes. DIY sushi also provides an opportunity for chefs to showcase their creativity and innovation, as they come up with new and interesting ingredient combinations for guests to try.

Sushi Burritos

The sushi burrito is a recent trend that has taken the world by storm. Essentially, it is a sushi roll that is made using a larger sheet of seaweed and stuffed with a variety of fillings, like rice, vegetables, and seafood. The result is a hearty and filling meal that is easy to eat on the go. Sushi burritos are a great option for people who love sushi but find traditional sushi rolls too small or delicate.

Gourmet Sushi

As sushi continues to gain mainstream popularity, there is a growing demand for more high-end and gourmet options. This trend is driven by a desire for more luxurious and sophisticated dining experiences. Gourmet sushi might include rare and exotic ingredients, like truffles or caviar, or it might feature elaborate presentations and techniques, like flame torching or smoking.

Sushi Delivery

In recent years, the rise of food delivery services like Uber Eats and Grubhub has made it easier than ever to enjoy restaurant-quality meals from the comfort of your own home. Sushi restaurants are taking advantage of this trend by offering delivery options, making it possible for customers to enjoy their favorite sushi dishes without ever leaving their house. This trend is particularly appealing to busy professionals and families who want the convenience of takeout without sacrificing quality or flavor.

In conclusion, sushi is a dish that continues to evolve and adapt to changing tastes and preferences. Whether you prefer traditional sushi or are excited by new and innovative sushi trends, there is sure to be something for everyone in 2023. From sustainable sourcing practices to gourmet ingredients and interactive dining experiences, the sushi industry is poised for continued growth and innovation in the years to come.

Celebrities Who Believe in ALIENS

It’s the age-old question that no one ever seems to be able to agree upon: Do aliens exist? While not everyone is entirely convinced that humans can definitively answer this question, there are others— even celebrities—who would go so far as to say that the existence of aliens is a proven fact! The following stars not only believe in the possibility of extraterrestrial life, they have publicly claimed to have had their own close encounters. So are UFOs and aliens really among us? We’ll let you (and these celebrities) be the judge!

Demi Lovato

You would think that most alien-believing celebrities would want to keep their beliefs private for fear of being ridiculed, but Demi Lovato isn’t like most celebrities. In 2021, the singer and actress produced and hosted a four-part docuseries for Peacock TV called Unidentified with Demi Lovato. The show was an exploration for answers into the unknown following an experience she had after her birthday party in 2020. Lovato claimed that she was outside stargazing and trying to make “eye contact” with aliens when she suddenly succeeded. In a later incident, Lovato claims she was in Joshua Tree when she came across a floating blue orb in the desert. She says the extraterrestrial orb hovered around 15 feet from the ground and 50 feet from her, but it seems the aliens decided to pass on abducting the star!

Kesha

It seems Lovato isn’t the only one experiencing strange phenomenons in Joshua

Tree! When Kesha released her 2017 album Rainbows, she revealed during media tours that the album was deeply inspired by her alien sightings in Joshua Tree. Known to be a party-girl, Kesha added the disclaimer that she was completely sober as she shared how she encountered five to seven balls of fire in the sky that went away and then suddenly came back again. It’s worth noting that Kesha is no stranger to paranormal activity as she made the wild claim back in 2012 that she’s had intimate relations with a ghost in the past… let’s just hope aliens won’t be the next ones to explore relations with the singer.

Fran Drescher

If you’re old enough to remember sitcoms in the 90s, then you will easily remember Fran Drescher from her iconic role as Fran Fine on The Nanny. In 2012, the actress was speaking with media outlets to promote her television show Happily Divorced when she made a surprising revelation about herself and her ex-husband Peter Marc Jacobson. Not only does Drescher believe in the existence of aliens, she is thoroughly convinced that she and Jacobson were each abducted by them as children. The story goes that the former couple both had individual experiences during junior high where they were driving with their fathers and extraterrestrials abducted them and implanted chips in their hands. The duo have matching scars on their hands and Drescher believes they were “programmed” to meet each other shortly after their alleged kidnappings.

Robbie Williams

Former member of Take That and successful solo singer Robbie Williams did an interview with 60 Minutes back in 2018 that delved into his beliefs and experience with aliens. Although skeptics will point out that Williams has struggled with addiction and may have been under the influence, the singer shared one incident that occurred while he claims to have been completely sober. During the incident, Williams says he saw a UFO hovering above his head that was close enough for him to “hit it with a tennis ball.” 10 years prior, Williams took a break from music and spent some time looking for aliens in the Nevada desert with writer Jon Ronson. Ronson wrote about the experience in an article for The Guardian which included taking part in a UFO convention.

Miley Cyrus

In a 2021 interview with Interview magazine, actress and singersongwriter Miley Cyrus discussed the time she believes a UFO chased her down. Cyrus claims she was driving in San Bernadino with a friend when the spacecraft began to follow them. The ship looked like a glowing snowplow and Cyrus said that her friend and othern drivers on the highway all seemingly saw the UFO and stopped their vehicles to stare. Cyrus went on to say that she even made eye contact with the driver of the UFO which was more distressing than the chasing itself. She claims it took her almost a week to recover from the terrifying extraterrestrial encounter.

Lupe Fiasco

It would appear that even rappers aren’t immune to alien encounters!

Famed rapper Lupe Fiasco spoke of his beliefs during a 2012 radio

interview sharing that he was visited by aliens when he was just 11 years old. The story goes that while he was laying in bed, Fiasco felt his body become electrified and immobile. He attempted to roll from his bed or call out for help, but was unable to do so until the shock suddenly stopped and he saw a black disc fly to his window and stop before speeding off again. For anyone who says it was just a bad dream, Fiasco is quick to share “proof” of the encounter in the form of a scar on his ankle that didn’t come from surgery or an injury that he can remember.

Dan Aykroyd

If there’s a celebrity who has never been shy about his belief in aliens, it’s Dan Akroyd! In a 2005 documentary, Dan Akroyd Unplugged on UFOs, the Ghostbusters star shared his long fascination with the belief that extraterrestrial life has paid us a visit from other planets. One of Akroyd’s early encounters came in the 1980s when claims he was awoken in the night to a voice encouraging him to go outside. His wife convinced him to stay in bed, but his strange story was corroborated by thousands of other people who claimed to have had the same experience that night. Flashing forward to 2002, Akroyd was in the middle of filming a UFOfocused show for the SyFy Channel when he noticed a man in black standing next to a black SUV. When he turned to look again, the car and man had disappeared. Hours later, the television series was shut down completely with no reason given. Akroyd believes the “Man in Black” was from the government and stopped the production to prevent them from getting too close to the truth.

Elvis Presley

It may surprise you to learn that even the King of Rock and Roll claimed to have had multiple UFO sightings during his lifetime! According to a former friend and hairstylist for the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, Vernon Presley allegedly saw a strange blue light in the skies above their little shack on the day his twins Elvis and Jessie were born and instantly knew that something special was happening. Another alleged story is that aliens visited Elvis at 8 years old to show him the path his life would take. Yet another story claims that the singer and his hairstylist were driving in the desert when they saw some UFOs in the sky that were moving too quickly to be airplanes which led the duo to believe they were something extraterrestrial.

Sneakers have long been seen as a casual footwear choice, but in recent years, they have made a major impact in men’s fashion. Sneakers can now be worn with dressier outfits, and they can add a touch of sophistication to any look. The key to pulling off this look is choosing the right pair of sneakers. Opt for classic styles in neutral colors that can easily be paired with dress pants or a suit. With the right pair of sneakers, you can add a touch of class and personality to your wardrobe.

DEAR MEN’S FASHION...

Keeping it classy & simple with jeans and a white shirt.

worn for any occasion, from a casual brunch to a fancy dinner. It’s a timeless fashion staple that will always make you look stylish and put together.

You can easily elevate the look with a blazer or dress it down with sneakers. The simplicity of this combination also allows you to play with accessories such as hats, jewelry, or a statement bag. Created by Mercedes-Benz’ most specialized customization and craftsmanship team in the Manufaktur in Sindelfingen, each vehicle will feature a badge in the center console outlining its number within the unique run of 150.

The limited special edition Mercedes-Maybach S 680 facilitates a full sensory experience and showcases a supreme elegance that is reflective of the brand’s Sophisticated Luxury ethos.

Tailor-made design inspired by Haute Couture

In line with the Concept Haute Voiture, the series car exterior is characterized by an exclusive two-tone paint finish: a combination of metallic nautical blue on top, with a light shimmering rose tone in the lower section and nautical blue metallic rims. An additional highlight now includes surround lighting with animated projection: When the doors are opened, animated Mercedes-Benz or Mercedes-Maybach patterns using LCD technology light up and elegantly illuminate both the front and rear entry areas.

Rose gold coloured champagne flutes seamlessly integrate the display in the spacious rear alongside an Haute Voiture badge in the door panel. Also original to the series car is the blue tone leather piping within the consoles.

The MBUX infotainment system picks up on the splendid exclusivity of the interior. Sparkling glitter clouds and a variety of accents in shimmering rose gold emphasize the catwalk atmosphere. In the profile selection menu, the driver is greeted with a magnolia blossom and sparkling particles. Twelve different avatars are adorned with fine accessories and elegantly dressed, for example in a dinner jacket, tailcoat or evening gown.

To complete the Maybach experience, the S-Class Haute Voiture will be accompanied by a hand-made gift box featuring its badge number, alongside a scaled model and key ring. In addition, a special car cover featuring the Maybach and Haute Voiture logo will be gifted to customers.

Oldies but Goodies!

STILL STREAMING STRONG

“BLINDING LIGHTS” - THE WEEKND

Blinding Lights, released in November 2019, has accumulated over 3.339 billion streams. The Weeknd’s mature vocals and the complex Depeche Mode-esque sound, highlighted by a perfect synth line, make for a memorable track about obsession and the need for love. The urgency in the protagonist’s rush to be near his love is mirrored in the drum machine’s fast-paced beat, while The Weeknd’s emotive vocals add depth and richness to the song’s sound.

“SHAPE OF YOU” - ED SHEERAN

Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You” has amassed over 3.335 billion streams since its release in January 2017. The Caribbean-flavored beat and rhythm-and-blues feel of the song are thanks to the core keyboard riff and guitar percussion. The lyrics, inspired by a Northern Irish phrase, use the shape of someone figuratively to express love. The track’s physicality is emphasized, making for a catchy, danceable hit that’s still popular years later.

“DANCE MONKEY” - TONES AND I

Tones and I’s “Dance Monkey” has accumulated 2.726 billion streams since its release in May 2019. The track’s plunking keyboard and thumping bass line create a fitting backdrop for the lyrics that describe the life of a street musician who is constantly asked to dance. Written to make people dance, the song can also be seen as a celebration of getting your party on or a retort to bullies. With its catchy melody and relatable lyrics, “Dance Monkey” is a must-add to any party playlist.

“SOMEONE YOU LOVED” - LEWIS CAPALDI

Lewis Capaldi’s “Someone You Loved” has garnered 2.596 billion streams since its release in November 2018. The piano-centered track’s stirring emotional sentiment has deeply resonated with fans and established it as his most revered song. Capaldi’s emotive voice and stunning lyricism shine through, conveying his emotional turmoil with breathtaking vulnerability and self-assuredness. The vocal breaks at the bridge amplify the depth of feeling in the song. “Someone You Loved” is a return to the raw, intimate sound that first earned Capaldi acclaim and remains a powerful and moving ballad.

“ROCKSTAR” - POST MALONE FEATURING 21 SAVAGE

Post Malone and 21 Savage’s “Rockstar” features a slow, dark vibe that sets it apart from some of Post’s other songs. The use of acapella emphasizes poignant lines, making them unforgettable. The lyrics capture the unapologetic recklessness of rockstars like Bon Scott and their lavish lifestyles. The track is masterfully produced, with complex and historically accurate lyrics. With over 2.5 billion streams, it’s no wonder why “Rockstar” has become a classic in its own right.

STYLETOME.COM | 57 DON’T MISS THE BEAT
These songs are STILL holding up the most streams in 2023

This generally does not apply to organic foods

Researched by Sven J. Bode

What if someone told you the plate of food you just devoured was filled with the same chemicals used to make yoga mats, preservatives found in wax food packaging, and a major component of rat poisoning? Yeah, not too appetizing. Unfortunately for those living in the United States, that’s the reality of what just went into your stomach.

While unnaturally dyed foods and hormone-packed meats are the norm in the U.S. and not something most people think twice about, many of the foods Americans eat on a daily are actually banned in countries across the globe. While the dairy industry is having a hissy fit over almond milk trying to call itself “milk,” there are bigger problems being ignored. Like why U.S. milk is banned throughout the European Union and Canada because the milk in those cartons may be a danger to human health. That almond “milk” certainly sounds more appealing now, doesn’t it?

Mountain Dew

Mountain Dew isn’t the healthiest thing in the world, but it gets even worse when you add in brominated vegetable oil. This ingredient is flameretardant and has been used in American sodas for decades. In some, it can cause skin lesions, memory loss, and nerve problems. That’s exactly why Europe and Japan have banned it from all food and beverages. CocaCola and PepsiCo have promised to remove it from all drinks as of 2014 but still have yet to deliver on this promise.

Skittles

turmeric. Products that do contain yellow 5 and yellow 6 must be labeled with the phrase: “May have an adverse effect on activity and attention in children.”

Several Breakfast Cereals

Popular breakfast cereals including Frosted Flakes, Honey Bunches of Oats, and Rice Krispies contain BHT. Used as a flavor enhancer, BHT has long been studied for its potential carcinogenic properties. While the evidence is inconclusive, BHT is banned in Japan and the European Union. Other cereals, such as Lucky Charms, use Yellow 5, Yellow 6 and Red 40, despite being known to cause itching and hives for some.

Milk

While becoming less common in the United States, some dairy farms still practice the use of rBST in their milk. This is a hormone that causes increased milk production. However, it’s been linked to a variety of health conditions including high rates of mastitis in cows that contaminate the milk with pus and antibiotics. Thanks to the use of rBST, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Japan, and the EU have banned milk and dairy products form the U.S.

American Foods That are BANNED in Other Countries

Kids in the U.S. grow up eating Skittles. However, since they contain the artificial colors yellow 5 and yellow 6— along with many other foods in the U.S., such as crackers, chips, and drinks—they’re banned in Norway and Sweden because they’re thought to cause allergic reactions, as well as hyperactivity in children, as explained by the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI). While they’re not banned in the European Union, they’re made using colors that occur naturally in fruits, vegetables, and spices, like

Boxed Mac and Cheese

Our beloved box of Kraft Mac and Cheese has food dye. While this brand has promised to go au naturel, other brands still dye their food with yellow #5 and #6.

These food additives are banned in Austria, Norway, and some other European countries because it can cause hyperactivity, increased cancer risk, and allergic reactions. These dyes can be found in countless other items including potato chips, jams, candy, drinks, pet food, shampoo, and even medications.

Pre-Packaged Ground Beef

Pre-packaged ground beef may be easy, but it has pink slime. Pink slime is an additive that lowers the overall fat content. During the process, your meat is exposed to ammonia gas or citric acid to kill bacteria. This isn’t regulated and can cause significant issues in humans. It’s banned in Canada and the European Union. The sale of American beef, in general, is also restricted in many other countries.

HEALTH
58 | STYLETOME.COM

This is due to the fact that our cows are treated with hormones to make them produce more milk. Additionally, the use of antibiotics is restricted in other countries. This makes beef a big no-no for most places.

Coffee-Mate

Coffee-Mate is supposedly a great addition to your coffee, but is it? This item is banned in many countries including Switzerland, Hungary, Austria, Denmark, Norway, and Iceland. The reason is simple: hydrogenated soybean and cottonseed oils. These ingredients have been linked to heart disease. While the United States also banned these ingredients in 2018, officials did nothing about the existing product out there, meaning there’s still plenty of it floating around.

Papaya, Corn, and Soy

America is kind of iffy on genetically modified foods – GMOs for short. Several nations have a ban on them, including Russia. The EU specifically has a ban on American corn, soy, papaya, and any foods that have been genetically engineered to be resistant to the ringspot virus. This type of GMO has been linked to multiple-organ damage, massive tumors, birth defects, sterility, and premature death. Even if the United States declared them safe, other countries are staying on the side of “better safe than sorry.”

Chicken

Chicken may be one of the healthier meats to eat in the United States, but our chicken isn’t so great according to the outside world. First of all, chicken is sometimes fed arsenic, which makes the meat appear pinker and fresher. Arsenic is a poison, which can kill you if you ingest too much. Additionally, chlorine is sometimes used to wash the meat to kill any microorganisms on the bird, but it basically all comes down to profits. Chickens in the U.S. have less space than those in the EU.

Pork

Ractopamine is a beta-agonist that’s used to increase protein synthesis in pork by reducing the overall fat content. While less fat may seem like a good thing, it’s not a great hormone to have in our systems.

Some studies show that up to 45% of pigs have been given ractopamine, and 20% of the ractopamine remains in the meat when we buy it from the store. For this reason, our pork is banned in 160 countries across Europe, Russia, China, and Taiwan.

Bread

Potassium bromate is an important chemical for bakers that don’t have time to cook bread the classic way. What you may not know is that it’s been linked to kidney damage, cancer, and

nervous system damage. The chemical is found in wraps, rolls, bread crumbs, bagel chips, and flatbreads. It’s no surprise that potassium bromate is banned in Europe, Canada, and China.

Frozen Dinners

Azodicarbonamide can be found in a variety of things including frozen dinners, breads, boxed pasta mixes, and packaged baked goods. It’s used to bleach flour and foamed plastic, like yoga mats and the soles of sneakers. It doesn’t sound too safe, and tests found that it can induce asthma. Anything containing azodicarbonamide is banned in Australia, the United Kingdom, and most European countries.

Sugar Cane

Banned in the EU, crops in the United States can still be treated with Atrazine. It’s an herbicide that has a wide variety of uses, but it’s been known to cause birth defects, reproductive tumors, skin sensitization, and muscle degeneration. Another horrible thing about atrazine is that it easily leaks into the water supply and interferes with wildlife. Atrazine is most commonly found in sugar cane, where it’s used about 90% of the time.

Fat-Free Snacks

Olestra was considered one of the best inventions in a while. Now, we can have our cake and eat it without it causing weight gain. Unfortunately, it wasn’t as fantastic as it seemed. Found in fat-free potato chips, corn chips, and French fries, Olestra (or Olean) makes your body unable to absorb vitamins. It can also cause cramps and leaky bowels in someone that eats too much. It’s banned in Canada and the United Kingdom.

Chewing Gum

We love chewing gum. While chewing gum is banned in some countries because people spit it onto the ground, the United Kingdom, Japan, and many other European countries ban it because it contains BHA.

This chemical is used to preserve food and keep it from going bad, but it’s known to cause cancer in rats. BHA can also be found in cereal, nut mixes, butter, meat, and dehydrated potatoes.

Farm Raised Salmon

Salmon is alright in other countries as long as it isn’t farmraised. Salmon that have been farm-raised are fed chemicals to make them the bright pinkish-red that we love so much. They’re also given a ton of antibiotics and other drugs that aren’t safe for humans. Finally, they’re fed synthetic astaxanthin to make their flesh look more appealing, which can cause eyesight damage in humans. Farm-raised salmon is banned in Austria and New Zealand.

HEALTH STYLETOME.COM | 59

Froot Loops

Froot Loops has a ton of artificial dyes in it – the same goes for Fruity Pebbles. A ton of stuff we eat actually has artificial dyes. Specifically, the dye in Froot Loops can inhibit nerve-cell development. That’s why Norway, Finland, Austria, France, and the U.K. have banned it from their countries. If you want your Froot Loop craving, you may have to look elsewhere. Also as a note, Fruity Pebbles are also banned, so that’s a no-go, too.

American M&Ms

Since Europe is much more strict over the ingredients in food than the U.S., it’s no surprise that some of the products are different depending on where you buy them. While M&Ms in the U.S. are made using artificial colors, they’re still sold in Europe where there’s a ban or warnings against those additives—but only because the batches across the pond are made using natural colors instead. After a 2014 petition for Mars Inc. to give the U.S. the same quality ingredients in M&Ms as Europe, the company said it would stop using artificial dyes, although that still hasn’t happened.

Maraschino Cherries

Red #40 is on the list of dyes you should avoid. Countless people are allergic to the dye, plus it increases your risk of cancer. While maraschino cherries are one of the biggest culprits, red dye #40 is also found in grenadine and cherry pie mix. You can check the ingredients list for any dangerous dyes. Anything containing red #40 is banned in Norway, Finland, France, Austria, the U.K., and several other European countries.

Apples

Ever wonder why apples were so shiny? Well, they’re glossed up using a mixture of chemicals that keep the fruit looking fresh for longer. It certainly makes apples look better, but it can also be dangerous for your body. The European Food Safety Authority recently blocked American apples because the chemicals (DPA) has been linked to various cancers. More research is needed, but Europe isn’t taking any chances.

Chocolate Milk

We all love a good glass of chocolate milk, but you may not want to pour a glass for yourself after reading this. Some brands of chocolate milk have carrageenan, which is a type of seaweed. It’s been used for ages, but modern American society uses it for veggie burgers, soy milk, beer, ice cream, and chocolate milk. This

ingredient can cause inflammation and can lead to heart disease, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Tests also found that laboratory mice developed glucose intolerance and impaired insulin action. The European Union acted quickly and banned it.

Ketchup

We all know that France takes its food very seriously. Well, apparently, officials thought ketchup was hindering their food culture. In 2011, France banned serving ketchup in elementary schools because it was unhealthy, but that isn’t the only reason. During an interview with the Daily Mail, National Association of Directors of Collective Restaurants, Christophe Hebert said, “We have to ensure children become familiar with French recipes so that they can hand them down to the following generation.”

Potato Chips

BHT or butylated hydroxytoluene is a sister compound of BHA. BHT is mostly used as a preservative to keep food fresh so consumers have plenty of time to buy it. It’s often found in foods like potato chips, sausage, and even meat patties. In the United States, it’s “generally recognized as safe,” but in other countries, it isn’t so “generally” safe. Some places have banned it while others have put heavy restrictions on it since data has shown it can cause cancer.

Cheese

Whether it’s cheese or milk, some countries don’t allow American dairy products for one nasty reason: rBGH. Recombinant bovine growth hormone is a synthetic version of BST. It’s injected into cows to increase milk production. It’s currently banned in 30 countries because it increases the risk of colorectal, breast, and prostate cancer. In the United States, many people prefer to avoid these hormones by consuming hormone-free dairy and meat.

High Fructose Corn Syrup

High fructose corn syrup is in a lot of our food, especially the cheaply made products. The sweetener is made from pure fructose and sugar. Unfortunately, it can also cause major health ailments. Things like obesity and Type 2 diabetes have skyrocketed since its introduction. In response, the United Kingdom and several other European countries have restricted the products or banned the use of high fructose syrup completely.

IN THE UNITED STATES, IT’S “GENERALLY RECOGNIZED AS SAFE,” BUT IN OTHER COUNTRIES, IT ISN’T SO “GENERALLY” SAFE

Palm Oil

Nothing is better than peanut butter and jelly, as long as the peanut butter isn’t made with palm oil. Palm oil isn’t healthy for your body as it can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. That being said, the EU decided to ban this ingredient for a completely different reason.

In early 2019, the EU decided to ban palm oil and products that used it. Rather than being harmful toward humans, the reasoning was to stop deforestation in the rainforest. American products use a lot of palm oil in products like ice cream, chocolate, bread, cookies, Ritz, and of course, the aforementioned peanut butter.

Processed Meats

We all know that processed meats aren’t the best for us, but this isn’t about the fat content. Many bacon brands, smoked meats, and processed meats are banned in the EU for one preservative: sodium nitrate.

Sodium nitrate is a type of salt that keeps food from degrading while also giving it a distinct smoky flavor. However, it’s been linked to certain types of cancer, so the EU went ahead and banned it. While bacon and smoked meats are available, don’t bet on finding any with sodium nitrate.

Stevia

Along with artificial sweeteners, stevia (a natural sweetener) was also banned in the EU from the start. Early in 1999, the European Commission banned stevia’s use in food products pending further research. There were concerns that this sweetener could be harmful to our health. Despite there being many supporters and it being hugely popular in the United States, the Food Standards Agency in the UK claims that there’s evidence from animal tests that stevia could increase the risk of certain cancers and male infertility.

Trans Fats

This one is the most recent addition to the EU-banned list. Trans fats are popular in many food products because it causes the item to have an extremely long shelf life as well as being cheap to produce. However, they can raise your bad (LDL) cholesterol levels while also lowering your good (HDL) cholesterol. Overall, trans fats can also increase your risk of stroke and developing heart disease.

Many snack foods like crackers, cookies, and microwave popcorn are known to have trans fats. You can also find trans fats in frozen pizzas, fast food, and coffee creamer. The law will prohibit anything that has more than two grams of trans fats per 100 grams of food.

The Heartwarming Vietnamese Noodle Soup

Pho (pronounced “fuh”) is a Vietnamese noodle soup that has become increasingly popular in recent years. This dish, which originated in the northern regions of Vietnam, consists of a flavorful broth made from beef bones and spices, thin rice noodles, and various toppings such as meat, herbs, and bean sprouts. Pho is often enjoyed as a breakfast or lunch dish in Vietnam, but it has gained a cult following around the world as a comforting and flavorful meal at any time of day.

The History of Pho

Pho has a long and complex history that reflects Vietnam’s many cultural influences. The dish likely evolved from Chinese noodle soups that were brought to Vietnam during the Ming dynasty in the 14th century. Over time, the Vietnamese adapted the soup to their own tastes, incorporating local ingredients and spices.

During the French colonial period in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, pho became a popular street food among the working-class population in Hanoi. The dish continued to evolve, with the addition of more herbs and spices, and the use of different cuts of meat.

After the Vietnam War, refugees brought pho to countries around the world, where it was embraced by foodies and Asian cuisine enthusiasts. Today, pho is enjoyed in restaurants and homes across the globe, and has become a symbol of Vietnamese culture.

The Ingredients and Preparation of Pho

To make pho, beef bones are simmered for hours with spices like star anise, cinnamon, and cloves, creating a rich and flavorful broth. The broth is then strained and served with rice noodles, which are cooked separately and added to the soup just before serving.

In Vietnam, pho is often eaten with hoisin sauce, sriracha, and chili peppers to add additional depth of flavor and heat. In the Western world, pho is often served with a plate of fresh herbs and vegetables like cilantro, basil, and bean sprouts, which diners can add to the soup according to their tastes.

The Benefits of Pho

Pho is not only delicious but also nutritious. The broth is rich in collagen, which is great for skin health and joint health. The addition of fresh herbs and vegetables provides a range of vitamins and minerals, and the rice noodles are a good source of carbohydrates.

Pho is also a comforting and warming dish that is perfect for cold weather or when you’re feeling under the weather. It’s no wonder that this Vietnamese noodle soup has become a beloved dish around the world.

SELF-LOVE IS NOT SELFISH

Everything starts with you. We must “love ourselves” first before we can share love with others. We hear it all the time: “LOVE YOURSELF”. We know how important it is, it’s the most beneficial thing we can do. But what we sometimes don’t hear, or fail to understand, is how. Or we may think to love ourselves first, is selfish because we were taught to do things ,and love others first. It’s actually the opposite, if you don’t know how to care or love yourself first, how can you love others?

What is self-love? Self-love is having a relationship with yourself that has compassionate, kind , patient , tolerant, and curious. It means you are nice to yourself, and are authentic with yourself in both the negative and the positive. You have the ability to take accountability or responsibility for mistakes you made, constantly improving your growth. Selflove is about giving yourself grace and forgiveness when you inevitably make mistakes. It is about believing in yourself, trusting yourself, asserting boundaries and overall deeper connection to yourself. The relationship you have with yourself is the only truly life-long relationship, self-love is the most important love of your life.

It can be more challenging to understand how important loving yourself is. However, even more challenging is what can happen when you don’t offer self-love. Your happiness is dependent on how you take care of yourself and self-love has been linked to increased resilience, and capacity to see things from new perspective. When you put yourself last or fail to love yourself, you will notice increased stress, anxiety and reactivity to the little things that you may

have ignored beforehand. Things will feel more difficult for you to handle, this can lead to overwhelming, and your feelings depleted and overall you will be unhappy.

Here are some basic steps to practice self love everyday:

1. Recognize and accept your emotional state

2. Take time for yourself

3. Get enough sleep

4. Exercising

5. Eating right

6. Using self-talk

7. Forgiving yourself

8. Challenging a negative story about yourself

9. Forgiving yourself

10. Committing to self-love

11. Don’t compare yourself to other people

12. Set boundaries

13. Surround yourself with supportive and loving people

14. Change a negative mind wset

15. Keep a gratitude journal

16. Give yourself a compliment

17. Practice mindfulness

18. Celebrate all your wins (big or small)

Self-love leads to better:

1. Happiness

2. Self-acceptance

3. Self-esteem

4. Self-awareness

5. Self-forgiveness

6. Self-discipline

7. Self-worth

8. Self-control

Mobility Exercise

AND WHY YOU SHOULD TRY IT

Mobility exercises are movements that aim to improve the range of motion of your joints and muscles. These exercises can include stretching, yoga, Pilates, and various bodyweight exercises. While they may not be as highintensity as traditional strength training or cardio workouts, mobility exercises are an essential component of any wellrounded fitness routine. Here are some of the top benefits of incorporating mobility exercises into your daily routine

HEALTH & FITNESS

JUST REMEMBER TO START SLOWLY, LISTEN TO YOUR BODY ‘‘

IMPROVED

RANGE OF MOTION:

As we age, our muscles and joints tend to become tighter, which can limit our ability to move comfortably and easily. By incorporating mobility exercises into your routine, you can help loosen up tight muscles and improve your overall range of motion. This can make everyday activities, such as bending down to tie your shoes or reaching for something on a high shelf, much easier and more comfortable.

INJURY PREVENTION:

When your muscles and joints are tight, you’re more prone to injury, whether you’re engaging in physical activity or just going about your daily life. By improving your range of motion, mobility exercises can help reduce your risk of injury. For example, if you have tight hip flexors, you may be more prone to lower back pain or knee injuries. Incorporating exercises that target your hip flexors can help alleviate this tightness and reduce your risk of injury.

BETTER POSTURE:

Poor posture can contribute to a wide range of health problems, including back pain, neck pain, and headaches. Mobility exercises can help improve your posture by increasing your awareness of your body and helping you move with more ease and alignment. For example, exercises that target your upper back can help counteract the effects of hunching over a computer all day, while exercises that target your core can help you maintain a strong, upright posture.

REDUCED STRESS AND TENSION:

Many mobility exercises incorporate deep breathing and relaxation techniques, which can help reduce stress and tension in the body. By focusing on your breath and tuning into your body, you can help calm your nervous system and promote feelings of relaxation and well-being. This can be especially helpful if you’re dealing with chronic stress or anxiety.

IMPROVED ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE:

Whether you’re a serious athlete or just enjoy staying active, mobility exercises can help improve your performance by enhancing your range of motion, balance, and coordination. For example, exercises that target your hips can help improve your squat form, while exercises that target your shoulders can help improve your overhead pressing ability. By incorporating mobility exercises into your routine, you can help take your fitness to the next level.

Overall, mobility exercises are an essential component of any well-rounded fitness routine. Whether you’re looking to improve your physical health, reduce stress, or enhance your athletic performance, there are many benefits to incorporating these exercises into your daily routine. So why not give them a try and see how they can benefit you? Just remember to start slowly, listen to your body, and always prioritize proper form and technique.

Interest in plastic surgery is at an all-time high, but stigma and misinformation still surround the industry and the patients. Welcome to Life in Plastic, a new series by Allure that aims to break down cosmetic procedures and provide all the information you’ll need to make whatever decision is right for your body — no judgment, just the facts. Here, we’re covering everything you need to know about the surge in neck lifts among a younger demographic.

Ninety percent of women have cellulite. It’s 100 percent normal — and completely natural. It is nothing more than an interaction between two body parts (fat meeting connective tissue, like collagen, under the skin). But as part of that 90 percent, I realize how cellulite brings with it mixed emotions, from ambivalence to embarrassment.

In the past, there’s been a feeling of helplessness. For those who want to get rid of their cellulite, a lot of the options have been unappealing, delivering unimpressive results via invasive procedures that break connective tissue using scalpels or heat from lasers. And topical creams merely minimize the appearance of dimples, not to mention the results are fleeting. So it’s a big deal that the FDA has approved the first injectable for cellulite, called Qwo. “It’s an exciting, less invasive treatment option for women with good skin firmness, meaning not loose skin, who are also bothered by dimpling from cellulite,” says Shari Marchbein, M.D., a clinical assistant professor of dermatology at NYU School of Medicine.

HOW QWO WORKS

But these injections are not always a quick fix. While some patients notice improvement after one or two appointments, it usually takes three treatments over the course of three months to see full results. Most patients receive 12 shots (one vial) in a session (taking 10 minutes or less) and each injection is said to feel similar to a Botox pinch. The material that’s being injected is collagenases, an enzyme known to break peptide bonds in collagen. Inject it into cellulite and it is believed to go to work dissolving the collagen bands (via a chemical process called Enzymatic Subcision and Remodeling) that fat was protruding through.

If there are no bands of collagen for the fat to press through then there is nothing to cause dimpling. “It is a permanent fix for the treated area,” says D. Shafer, M.D., a plastic surgeon, noting that it is different from invasive procedures where there is a possibility the bands can reconnect, causing a recurrence of cellulite.

In clinical trials on Qwo, there was a two-level improvement of cellulite on the Photo-numeric Cellulite Severity Scale — basically, moderate and severe cellulite was drastically improved, but not one hundred percent erased.

Qwo is FDA approved for use in the butt, but some dermatologists and plastic surgeons are also using it off-label on the thighs with similar results. There is one likely side effect, but its temporary. Every single patient will get bruises. Blood vessels around the area get a little leaky, causing internal bruising. It’s nothing dangerous, but it can look dramatic for around two weeks.” Even so, the long-term results seem to outweigh the temporary bruising. Besides smoothing things over, for many, Qwo is injecting a boost of confidence.
