She then left for Detroit and Chicago where she gained recognition for her talent in Grand Prix models and Auto show girls. Susan has been photographing Tampa’s greatest talent for nearly eight years. She has gained wide recognition for her beauty and spa photography. She is an expert with light and has a knack for art direction. Her recent endeavors in digital have proved her talents even stronger.

GREG ALEXANDER Greg Alexander is a world citizen who travels the planet to transmute all the quintessence of femininity on glazed paper. If he nourishes an atavistic passion for Greece, the ground of his ancestors, it’s in Paris that he has found his home port. As a photographer, he continues his dream of perfection because, according to him, “the photograph is a kind of plastic surgery which is able to modulate a face ad infinitum!” His vision of beauty is fragile, transitory, a little kitsch and inevitably fatal.

4TIPS

for a Productive 2021

This year has taught many workers a thing or two about being productive when offices and homes blend into one. As the calendar turns to 2021, consider these key products and processes to stay productive next year. Find a system (and stick to it): Creating an organizing system is an easy way to ensure your at-home workspace is ready for optimal productivity. Designate space to house all your work items – a drawer, cabinet or box – and keep work items organized by type (pens, papers, computer gear, etc.) At the end of each day, transitioning to “offline hours” can be easier when you have a place to stow your work items. Start your day clean: Studies have shown cleanliness has a direct impact on productivity. Yet, many people struggle to find the time and energy to clean, especially at the end of a busy

14

| TAMPASTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

day at home. An option like The DEEBOT T8 from Ecovacs provides a hands-free cleaning experience, complete with the time-saving benefits of an all-in-one robot vacuum and floor mop, along with TrueDetect technology to avoid tangling in small objects. Easily controlled via an app, just set it to clean before bed and wake up to a tidy workspace. Break up your day: With so many hours at home in front of a computer, workdays can get a little monotonous. Break up the day to make working from home feel as “normal” as possible – shower in the morning, take a walk or drive to coffee then make time for at least two breaks throughout the day. Some people have found success with the Pomodoro Technique, which is breaking your day up into 25-minute chunks of work, with 5-minute rest periods. If you continue to work until you feel like taking a break, odds are you’ll overwork yourself until it’s too late to take the “big break” you had in mind.

Bookend your days with mindfulness: At the beginning and end of each workday, do a 3-5-minute mindfulness meditation. Before signing on to work for the day, allow your mind to fully focus on the day’s tasks at-hand. Sign off by doing another mediation to end the day and let go of any worries or stresses you might have. Incorporating this tactic into your daily routine can help create a natural boundary from work and home while also restoring peace of mind. Find more solutions to help maintain productivity at Ecovacs.com.

THE CASE FOR MODERATION

B Y D AW N H A R R I S S H E R L I N G , M . D . , F. A . C . P.

In case you were trapped on a deserted island with no internet for the past year, you might need to be informed that we just had a very contentious election season in the United States. Families were ripped apart, friendships were ended. Sides had to be taken and there was no room for moderation. When did this all begin? Some have made the case that it started four years ago. Others contend that it goes back forty. And while pundits argue about the starting date of our political polarization, the roots of our need for absolutism may stretch further back than that, and right into our kitchen cabinets. As the new year begins, we start to contemplate which diet we’ll then switch to in order to atone from the holidays. Very few of us have moderation on our minds. And at least as far

16

| TAMPASTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

as the kitchen is concerned, we have Dr. John Harvey Kellogg to thank for our extremism. Back in the 1800s, Dr. Kellogg ran a health spa. But this was no ordinary health spa. Besides being a physician, Dr. Kellogg was also a religious man and he promoted abstinence from sex, alcohol, and meat. While the French and Italians were enjoying wine, rich foods, and the occasional tryst, Dr. Kellogg developed bland-tasting corn flakes in order to help curb American sexual appetites that he thought were stimulated by the consumption of delicious food. By his calculation, good food, like good sex, was something to be resisted, not enjoyed. Fast-forward 150 years and we get a myriad of extreme diets that we are told will make our lives better, but that rarely do. “Which diet works the best?” I’m often asked, especially this time of year.

Studies comparing low carb to low fat to calorie counting to intermittent fasting abound. And yet, we still don’t have an answer. The best anyone has come up with is that some diets work for some people and no diet works for everybody. In the short term, most diets result in weight loss and in the long term, very few do. Americans probably diet more than any other people on Earth and still, we have one of the highest rates of obesity in the world. It is estimated that 40% of Americans suffer from obesity while less than 20% of French people and fewer than 10% of Italians do. (https://www. oecd.org/health/obesity-update.htm) How is it possible that the French and the Italians are eating richer food, dieting less, and still avoiding obesity? In a word—moderation. Around the world, people who eat reasonable amounts of fresh

STYLE MD

food, are thinner. They don’t need to avoid entire food or nutrient categories. They simply eat sensibly, stopping when full. When we eat fresh, less processed food, our bodies are better at signaling us to stop eating. When we eat highly processed, so-called convenience foods, the off switch doesn’t work very well and we eat more and subsequently gain weight. It turns out that Dr. Kellogg was sadly misguided. By processing his grains into more bland, less textured flakes, he wasn’t promoting health, he was launching us into an era of obesity. Instead of curbing our appetites, he was stoking them.

Dr. Sherling is a general internist and clinical associate professor at Florida Atlantic University Schmidt College of Medicine. She is the author of several academic articles and a medical thriller, Not Quite Dead. Website: dawnharrissherling.com Twitter: @dharrissherling

Extremism rarely plays out the way it was supposed to. For this holiday season, it might do us good to resolve to look at our plates and instead of piling them high with things that we’ll regret later, instead make better choices upfront. More isn’t better, but deprivation isn’t right either. The key to health is to ignore the false promises made by overly processed, highly marketed foods and instead make the choice to consume real, minimally processed foods year-round. It’s much harder to fix the consequences of extreme choices than it is to just make good ones in the first place.

HOW IS IT POSSIBLE THAT THE FRENCH AND THE ITALIANS ARE EATING RICHER FOOD, DIETING LESS, AND STILL AVOIDING OBESITY?

HEALTH

SENSORY DEPRIVATION TANKS By Gina Ritch

Meditation spas have been all the hype this year. In a time where meditation boutiques are almost more popular than regular day spas, Americans are taking more interest in pastimes that soothe not just the body, but also the mind. Learning how to calm the mind and master a quiet headspace is proven to have many benefits in dealing with the stresses of everyday life. Yoga has long been celebrated as a way to achieve a balance between mind and body, but for those that want to take their meditation exercises to the next level, sensory deprivation tanks may be the next step. These tanks take away the senses of sight and sound as you float in a teninch pool of Epsom salt water. In this weightless space, the mind takes off into uncharted territories as the brain utilizes its non-dominant half. While everyone has their own individual experiences, many encounter lucid, dreamlike hallucinations to out-of-body episodes. Studies show that the more you use these tanks, the better you become at cultivating the benefits of these thought-provoking pods. Praised for the mind-calming and sensory-stimulating benefits, these tanks can aid in many nervous system problems, such as high blood pressure and chronic tension pains. Without the commotion of day-to-day urgencies, many become aware of tension pains they never noticed they had before while occupying this quiet space. Not only can it assist in challenges with the nervous system, it has also been shown to help ease anxiety, insomnia, and depression.

18

| TAMPASTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

As you lie floating in the dark with the ears submerged, a forced meditative state comes on that allows you to really explore thoughts that are usually blocked by everyday distractions. It’s a time to retreat into your own consciousness. As memories become clearer, and put-aside thoughts come to the forefront, it becomes easy to explore those closed off parts of the mind. Many artists use these tanks as a way to tap into their creative side, especially when searching for inspiration to break through imaginative blocks. These tanks are gradually becoming more popular with athletes as well, due to the enhanced motor skills and perception benefits that carry on after an hour session. The next time you need a little inspiration, reflection, or rejuvenation, a session at your local floating sensory deprivation spa may just be the perfect remedy. Whether you wish to quiet the mind and escape the stresses of the world for an hour, or you want to employ one of the many health benefits and lower your anxiety or high blood pressure, these tanks are worth trying to achieve that coveted space of balance between body and mind.

THE PERFECT

RED

FOR YOUR SKIN TONE

22

| TAMPASTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

The colors we wear can either make or break the vibrancy of our skin. When it comes to makeup, we should match our lip shade the same as we would match foundation or face powder. Once you understand your own skin, you will know the hues that work best for you. The first step in defining your skin tone is by determining the undertones of your skin. The best way of recognizing your undertone is by looking at the veins in your wrist. If they appear to be blue or purple, you have cool undertones. Cool undertones call for lipstick colors that have deep blueish shades. So instead of an orangey red, you would go for deep, purple tinted red. Also, dusty purple and

berry shades compliment your skin! If your veins are slightly more green, you have warm undertones. Vibrant colors are your friend! You can go for an orangey shade or bright red! Peachy-pink shades are also a match for you. If your veins seem to be a mixture of these colors, then you might have neutral undertones. Neutral undertones basically just means you’ve been blessed with the ability to rock basically any shade of red. Orangey reds, pink-reds, berry-reds, wine red. My best advice to anybody with a neutral skin tone is to rock the everlasting classic Marilyn Monroe red...just because you can!

BEAUTY

KEEP YOUR SKIN YOUNG

Easy tips for keeping your skin firm, bright, and blemish free I think it’s safe to say that every woman (and man) has faced many skin battles. Some which we’ve won and some which we’ve lost. But there is a way to win every battle. Of course it will take a few extra steps in your routine, but they are super simple and easy and won’t take away from your time! Also this can be done to all skin types. And if you already have a method that works for you then keep doing it! Before we get into the details, all products that you decide to purchase for this, try to find the ones that uses more natural products. So a lot of plant extract, natural oils and butters, and collagen protein. This is especially good if you’re interested in achieving younger looking skin. Collagen helps build healthy skin cells and is partially responsible for skin’s youthful elasticity, softness and firmness. Now that we’ve cleared the air lets get into the steps and products!

26

| TAMPASTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

First thing is to exfoliate. This may be a broken record to some but it is probably one of the most important step in your skincare routine for the face (and body!) It helps with the removal of dry/dead skin cells on the surface of the skin. Exfoliation not only helps many skin problems, it also increases blood circulation, which in turn helps achieve healthy and glowing skin. BE CAREFUL not to over-exfoliate. If you over do it, it can cause skin irritation and inflammation, which can actually accelerate aging. You should try to exfoliate two to three times a week for normal to combination skin, and once a week for sensitive skin. Next is toning your skin. It’s important to buy a toner and use it after you wash your face/ exfoliate. Toners help remove oil and traces of dirt. (Toners are most helpful and necessary for people with oily or acne-prone skin) Toners also shrink your pores, just apply a small amount

on a cotton pad and gently blot or wipe your face. Another benefit is that it helps restore your skin’s pH balance. The skin is acidic naturally and when you clean your face, it can mess up the natural balance and your skin will work to try to get it back which can lead to oily skin, but using a toner will help restore the balance. Final steps are to get an anit-aging serum / collagen serums and moisturizer. These serums help with soothing and brightening of the skin and the long term use of these serums result in healthier and firmer skin, even skin tone, and fewer wrinkles. Choose serums that contain ingredients such as stable antioxidants, essential oils, retinol, vitamin C, and vitamin E. Serums do not replace moisturizers, so make sure to moisturize your face daily. It’ll boost hydration in your skin, prevent flaking and dullness, and work as a protective layer of moisture that lasts all day.

4 LUXURY BRANDS ENGAGING IN SUSTAINABILITY Luxury brands that take a more thoughtful approach to business There’s no denying the world is in a movement in trying to be greener. What does that mean? People are being more aware of their meat consumption, reducing plastic use, switching to a more “plant based” lifestyle that not only impacts their health, but the health of our planet. And specifically, luxury brands.

| TAMPASTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

Some of the world’s most popular, luxurious brands are taking action in doing business in a more thoughtful approach, from sustainable practices to upcycling programs to conscious consumption and more. Whether it’s a commitment to more sustainable practices (how they produce their product, what materials they use, etc.) or responsible actions during this pandemic, brands are making a statement. Here are just a few companies. Chanel Last March, Chanel announced Mission 1.5°, its four-pronged commitment to fighting climate change. Among the tenets are the reduction of Chanel’s carbon footprint by 50% by 2030 and its supply chain emissions by 40% per unit sold by 2030. Chanel is also trying to focus on responsible sourcing and production of raw materials while simultaneously reexamining how it designs, manufacturers, moves and distributes goods.

Alexander McQueen At Alexander McQueen, the extra fabrics are donated to fashion universities in the U.K. so students can use them in their projects. “The ethos at Alexander McQueen is that everything we use in researching and designing collections has always been archived and stored,” says Creative Director Sarah Burton. “We’ve never thrown anything away.” Louis Vuitton Similar to Alexander McQueen, Louis Vuitton also finds ways to recycle their fabrics and show sets. Extra fabric is given a new life via the Be Mindful initiative, a capsule collection of excess textiles reinvented into fashion jewelry. Brunello Cucinelli Designer Brunello Cucinelli, raised in Umbria, Italy, says he feel responsible for the beauty of the world. That devotion has grown into a company mantra, which relies not only on designing artisanal luxury products that last, but also into the treatment of the land where the brand is headquartered and the people who work there. The designer recently announced he would give— not sell—the surplus inventory in boutiques to organizations in need. The total amount of the donations will equal more than $34 million.

Production of the Audi e-tron GT Passion for detail, maximum precision, and top quality: The new Audi e-tron GT reflects all the passion with which Audi develops and builds cars. For the production of the electrically powered Gran Turismo at Audi Böllinger Höfe at the Neckarsulm site, the company uses customized new technologies – however, the finishing touches are applied by highly skilled hands. And since the dynamic work of art must also sound good, Audi has brought musical flair and technical competence to bear in composing a unique sound for the e-tron GT. It sounds powerful and progressive – just as an Audi should. Production of the Audi e-tron GT

THE EXPRESSIVE DESIGN OF THE AUDI E-TRON GT PLACES UNUSUALLY HIGH DEMANDS ON PRODUCTION QUALITY.

The Audi e-tron GT is the brand’s first fully electric car to be built in Germany. The Gran Turismo will start rolling off the production line at Audi Böllinger Höfe at the Neckarsulm site at the end of 2020. The small-series production facility has been expanded, upgraded, and converted for its new role. The skilled craftsmanship from the previous facility has been retained and is supplemented by digital processes and smart technologies. During the expansion, production planners made use of new virtual methods. The tests of the work procedures on the assembly line and the logistic processes were conducted in the virtual domain for the first time, with container planning also performed with the help of VR technology. Production of the e-tron GT was designed without physical prototypes – a first at Audi. Large areas of the body of the all-electric Gran Turismo are constructed from ultra-highstrength steel and aluminum. To produce this material mix in the planned quantities, a body shop was established that combines the skilled craftsmanship of the employees with the full potential of automated production technology. It consists of an innovative body assembly line along which each body passes twice. It is constructed around what is called the two-way framer, in which ten robots are used to attach the inner and outer side panels. It combines all manufacturing steps involved in joining the sides in a single system – thus making production of the Audi e-tron GT possible on the existing floorspace. The inline measuring procedure for the bodies is also new. It guarantees even greater accuracy and can respond very quickly to minute deviations. At the end of the body assembly line is where precise craftsmanship comes into

play: Experienced workers fit the add-on parts and check the finish of the completed body. The expressive design of the Audi e-tron GT places unusually high demands on production quality – the side wall frame, for instance, has a remarkably large draw depth of 35 centimeters (13.8 in) between its highest and lowest point. The expanded assembly line includes 36 instead of the previous 16 cycles. The e-tron GT shares it with the R8 – this integration of two technically completely different cars is unique in the Volkswagen Group. Both models are moved using the same driverless transport vehicles and an electrically powered monorail system. At one station of the line, humans and robots work side by side. A 3D printer is also on hand to produce customized assembly aids at the employees’ request. Once completed, every car is driven for 40 kilometers (24.9 mi) on public roads, which also includes sections on the highway and in urban traffic. “With the integration of the Audi R8 and Audi e-tron GT, a unique combination of craftsmanship and smart factory technology is coming to life at Böllinger Höfe,” says Production Head Wolfgang Schanz in summary. “I am especially proud of the passion and spirit of our team.” The e-sound of the Audi e-tron GT Whether it’s quality, design or technical characteristics – the Audi e-tron GT is a car packed with all the passion of Audi. This also applies to the sound of the electrically powered Gran Turismo. Engineers Rudolf Halbmeir and Stephan Gsell conceived and designed the progressive electronic sound – on the computer, in the sound laboratory, inside the moving car, and in customer studies. As with every electric car, the e-tron GT also features the statutory acoustic vehicle alerting system (AVAS), although embedded within a broader acoustic spectrum. A loudspeaker fitted in the front of the vehicle emits the AVAS sound. For customers ordering the optional sound package, a second, large loudspeaker is added in the rear. In parallel, two loudspeakers in the interior provide an emotional sound experience. Two control units continuously remix the e-tron GT sound based on variables such as speed or accelerator position. The Audi drive select system allows drivers to set whether and how intensively they wish to experience the sound.

CELEBRITY SOUP

CELEBRITY INVENTORS PROOF THAT CREATIVE GENIUS CAN COME FROM JUST ABOUT ANYWHERE! By Riesa Pascal In 2018, the U.S. issued its ten millionth patent, which marked a major milestone in the 228-year history of the American intellectual property system. Some of these patents have been given to world-class inventors like Thomas Edison, who was granted more than 1,000 patents in his lifetime. Others have been issued to ordinary people who simply thought of a new and improved way of doing things. Then there is the group that falls somewhere in the middle because while celebrities may not be renowned inventors... they can certainly be far from ordinary. Charlie Sheen You may not agree with the practicality behind every invention on this list, but I personally found this one to be quite a great ideal! Believe it or not, Two And A Half Men’s Charlie Sheen owns the patent for an invention that aims to make it easier to use lip balm. The applicator dispenser would have a retractable cap, as opposed to the more common removable one. Sheen revealed that the idea came to him while driving and trying to apply Chapstick. The frustration at not being able to do so with one-hand inspired the patent which he then pitched to Chapstick. Unfortunately for Sheen, Chapstick ultimately passed on implementing his invention. Jamie Lee Curtis Actress Jamie Lee Curtis has been a mother both on the big screen and in real life so she is well familiar with the struggles of motherhood. While changing her daughter’s diaper one day, Curtis realized that she didn’t have any wipes nearby which sparked a thought that led to an incredibly handy invention for fellow parents. In 1987, Curtis designed and patented a disposable diaper with a waterproof pocket that holds a couple baby wipes for easy cleanup. However, don’t run off to the store just yet! Ever the environmentalist, Curtis has vowed not to manufacture her invention until diapers become biodegradable. Michael Jackson The King of Pop is known for many things, one of which includes his ground-breaking dance moves. Though the moonwalk remains most memorable, who could possibly forget the gravity defying lean he pulled off in the Smooth Criminal music video? Jackson pulled off the move with hidden cables and a harness, but this only worked with the assistance of movie magic. To perform the maneuver live on stage, Jackson co-invented a shoe with a heel that could attach to a hook on the floor. The hook anchored his feet in place while he leaned forward 45 degrees to complete the signature move. The patent for this “method and means for creating anti-gravity illusion” was given in 1993 and nearly thirty years later, the dance move remains just as iconic! James Cameron With worldwide acclaimed movies like Titanic, Avatar, and The Terminator under his belt, it’s probably not surprising to hear that James Cameron is willing to do—or invent—whatever it takes to maintain his high standards of film production. The famed director 58

holds a number of patents and will often invent new technology to assist in the completion of his films if the technology he desires does not already exist. One of these inventions includes an underwater dolly device that helps to propel a person underwater while maintaining buoyancy. The apparatus makes it easier for a camera operator to film scenes underwater and allowed Cameron to capture various shots needed for the 1989 film, The Abyss. Steven Spielberg Yet another director who joined the world of inventions and patents is the one and only Steven Spielberg. While Cameron’s invention sought to help his camera operators, Spielbieg’s patent was made to help out his fellow directors. The device would allow users to edit a document while on-the-go or even add verbal annotations, similar to Google Documents today. Spielberg intended for the device to be used with scripts and although we now have similar technology on our smartphones, in 2011 the invention was groundbreaking. Paula Abdul Former American Idol judge Paula Abdul is known for her energetic performances and concerts. In addition to singing her heart out, Abdul is often seen dancing and moving around the stage throughout the duration

Lose FAT & INCHES Noninvasively

of her shows. This resulted in a unique need for a microphone that could keep up with her moves. In 2008, Abdul invented a microphone stand with a weighted, concave-shaped bottom that allowed the microphone to move around with her while always returning to an upright position similar to a free standing punching bag. Mark Twain Classic writer Samuel Langhorne Clemens was not just passionate about storytelling, he was also into hobby scrapbooking! Better known by his pen name Mark Twain, the scrapbook lover was frequently bothered by the standard scrapbooking process of hand-gluing all of his memories into the pages of his scrapbooks. This led Twain to invent a self-adhesive alternative in 1872 that worked much like an envelope. A scrapbooker only needed to wet a portion of the page to make the adhesive come to life. Bonus fun fact: In 1871, Twain patented an “improvement in adjustable and detachable straps for garments” which we still use today in the modern day bra strap clasp.

There is no doubt that the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has completely changed our lives, from the way we travel to what we wear. And even though there is a vaccine ready to be distributed, a face mask is the safety measure that is going to stay for the long run. With that being said, unfortunately there is a significant amount of disposable masks being found all over the streets (and garbage). We came a long way with reusable bags, straws, and much more daily necessities that have become sustainable. And the face mask has now become the most important item we carry. And thanks to certain brands and companies, we can now purchase washable and reusable face masks. They are more environmental friendly and they come in different patterns, designs, and colors to fit your personal style and/or outfit.

There are a few brands in particular that donate a percentage of sales to either nurses, doctors, who are on the frontlines of COVID-19. Some donate masks to the workers as well. Burberry in particular donates all profits from the mask sales to the Burberry Foundation COVID-19 Community Fund that supports communities impacted by the pandemic worldwide. Stella McCartney’s Italian-made face mask, is made with organic cotton. For every purchased mask, the designer has committed to planting a tree in partnership with Conservation International. Last, but certainly not least, for each mask purchased, the brand Free People will donate one of their masks to people fighting for different social and health causes such as racial injustice, immigration, and the prevention of COVID-19 spread in Guatemala.

“THE IDEA OF ALTERING OUR DNA IS A LITTLE BIT (OR PERHAPS A LOT) SCARY. THANKFULLY, MRNA DOESN’T DO THAT.” Summary 1. Q. Should I get the vaccine? A. Yes 2. Q. Does it matter which one? A. Probably not 3. Q. What side effects can I expect? A. You will likely get a sore arm for a day or two and also be more tired than usual for a day or two. There are other, rarer side effects which can occur but which are less likely. For more, read on.

It hard to believe that we have a vaccine for a newly discovered infectious disease available in less than a year. This is mostly because, that’s not what happened. The story of the COVID-19 vaccine is like the tale of the artist who becomes an overnight success, who in actual fact was working their tail off for about a decade before they were “discovered” by the mainstream. While many scientists were worried that the next global pandemic would be an influenza (flu) virus, a few smart researchers perked up their ears and reached for their test tubes when the first deadly coronavirus called SARS appeared in 2002. These scientists really got cracking when another deadly coronavirus, MERS, made its debut in 2012. While the rest of us were leading our normal, happy lives, they were getting ready for “the big one.” Scientific papers with titles such as “Molecular Basis of Coronavirus Virulence and Vaccine Development” and “Antibodies and Vaccines Against Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus” ran in obscure journals in the years before COVID-19 existed. Besides these, other scientists were hard at work on the mRNA technology on which the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are based. Which brings us to the mRNA technology and the fact that two coronavirus vaccines are the first to utilize this platform. mRNA sounds an awful lot like DNA and our DNA is the basic building block for what makes each of us unique and special. The idea of altering

our DNA is a little bit (or perhaps a lot) scary. Thankfully, mRNA doesn’t do that. mRNA is the stuff that DNA makes to give instructions to cells on how to make the things we need. Think of mRNA like middle managers of our bodies. The big boss, DNA, tells the managers, mRNA, what instructions to give to the actual builders. The mRNA cannot tell the big boss what to do—information just doesn’t flow that way in our bodies. So, mRNA tells our cells to make a version of the coronavirus spike protein which is harmless without the rest of the coronavirus behind it. Our immune systems learn to respond to the spike, and with 94-95% effectiveness, do that after two shots of the Moderna or Pfizer vaccines. mRNA is short lived if not deep frozen and so, with a body temp of around 98oF, it’s soon gone and whatever things made you wonderful or not so wonderful are unchanged. The other vaccines, like AstraZeneca and Johnson and Johnson, which will hopefully be effective, are based on older technology and odds are, you’ve already had several other similar vaccines in your life. So, back to question #3 and the dreaded vaccine side effects. I find myself typing this about 40 hours away from getting my second dose of the Pfizer vaccine. After my first shot about three weeks ago, I wound up with a sore arm for two days and impressive fatigue for about six hours. I had to take a nap and then felt better. Others have described nothing happening after the first shot and some vaccine recipients have had headaches, nausea, or muscle aches. The symptoms are reported to

be a bit worse with the second shot, but don’t usually last more than 48 hours. I was actually relieved when I reacted to the vaccine—it meant my immune system recognized a potential invader and got to work making antibodies that would protect me if and when the real coronavirus showed up. There are people who have a more severe reaction, called anaphylaxis, which is why we have to be monitored for 15 minutes after taking the vaccine. The odds of this happening are about 1 in 100,000 to 200,000 people. That’s probably the same as your odds of being struck by lightening if you live in Florida. However, with personnel ready to give you medication to treat the anaphylaxis at the vaccine administration sites, if you should be particularly unlucky, you will survive this reaction and just have a bad day. I can’t say the same for the lightening or for COVID-19. So, when it is offered to you, please get your vaccine.

| TAMPASTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

Baby, it’s cold outside! And what better way to warm up than with a tasty, hot drink? Holidays are the best time to snuggle around the couch with your family, throw on some pajamas, watch a movie, and slurp on a heated beverage. No celebration is complete without a signature hot chocolate recipe. The Kahlua Hot Chocolate is the perfect drink to stay cozy around the fireplace. It is splendid for any family gathering this season and is easier to make than you think. The mini marshmallows slathered in salted caramel and melted chocolate is enough to satisfy anyone’s sweet dessert cravings. With Christmas just around the corner, you could even gift this to friends and family. Combine the ingredients, throw them in a cute jar with a ribbon, and you’re good to go! Regardless of what you decide to do, just take some time to relax, unwind, and make yourself a nice mug of Kahlua Hot Chocolate.
