Tired of busting your butt at the gym for hours at a time and seeing little results? HIIT, standing for

high intensity interval training, is quickly becoming one of the most popular styles of working out due to its exciting and challenging nature as well as its convenience for people on a time crunch. However, it is much more than a fleeting trend. Programs like F45, Orange Theory, and CrossFit are good examples of mixed modal forms of training, meaning they combine elements of high-intensity, strength, cardio, and circuit training to provide you with the most effective workout in less time than a trip to the local gym. No matter your fitness level, HIIT training programs have something to offer you.

You might be asking yourself, “How is HIIT any better for me than a regular trip to the gym?” The answer is simple. The science behind HIIT is the reason why a 30-minute HIIT session can be more effective than an hour running on the treadmill at the gym. To sum it up - by performing short bursts of high intensity exercise followed by short periods of recovery, you’re heart rate is rising and falling quickly, making your body work harder to stabilize. By pushing your body to the limits, it will begin pulling from stored fat for fuel, causing fat loss and muscle building. During an average F45 class, you can burn between 500 and 800 calories within the allotted 45 minutes, depending on your age, gender, and fitness level. The average person only burns about 200 calories in 45 minutes of regular exercise on their own. An additional benefit to this type of training is that you can expect to burn calories for up to 36 hours after a session – that means you’ll be burning calories in your sleep. Besides the obvious health benefits, HIIT programs are usually done in a group setting, which not only encourages a sense of community, but motivates you to challenge yourself alongside your team. Coaches are also readily available to help you achieve the correct form and keep you moving when the going gets tough. Prefer to work alone? HIIT programs are based on individual success, meaning everyone focuses on their own progress. The best part about it is that you are free to work at your own speed and level. If you’re a beginner, or just having a bad day, you can simply go down in weight or do fewer reps to tailor to your body’s needs. Success is measured based on the individual, since a 60-year-old might not perform the same as a 20-year-old. Joining a HIIT gym is more than a workout choice - it’s a lifestyle change. Perfect for busy people looking for a fun challenge, a HIIT community might be exactly what you’re looking for to make friends, reach fitness goals, and maybe even achieve the six-pack abs you’ve been wanting.

I know an infectious disease specialist who likes to elbow bump people when he meets them, saying, “My people don’t shake hands,” with a sly grin. By his “people,” the doctor means infectious disease specialists, and by not shaking hands, he is avoiding a behavior that is well known to spread respiratory and other illnesses. I know a few other people who elbow bump, and I’ve thought about doing it but am worried that people will think I am rude for not wanting to shake hands. I hear them wondering, “She doesn’t want to touch me! Does she think I’m dirty?” And yes. That is what I am thinking. Because you are. I am. We all are carrying loads of germs on our hands. And what the infectious disease doctor has known for a while now, and what the rest of us are just starting to realize, is that some of these germs are getting scary. Good infection control practices haven’t traditionally been seen as cool, sexy, or even practical. They won’t be the next jade egg or essential oil, and these tips are unlikely to find their way onto Gwyneth Paltrow’s self-help website or Oprah’s favorite things. But now there is the novel coronavirus outbreak, and people are asking in a panicked state, “What can we do to prevent it?” And since jade eggs and oils aren’t likely to be of assistance, I’d like to propose a new “coronavirus handshake.” It goes like this: don’t shake hands.

For those of you who consider this extreme, think of it like the way you prepare for a hurricane. Because following the coronavirus story is like tracking a late season hurricane still way out in the Atlantic. It could be coming our way, or go in a completely different direction, or perhaps it will peter out entirely before even coming close. We might be totally prepared for it, or it may cause total devastation. Floridians say, “Tell us when and where it is coming and how bad it will be, and we will be ready.” But coronavirus doesn’t work that way. Some track the virus for hourly updates, only to find nothing much. And it’s the not knowing that is hard. Fortunately, we do know a fair amount about how viruses are transmitted and we know what to do about it. Now is our chance to exercise that knowledge and maybe stop an epidemic. And while we are at it, we will probably slow down the transmission of flu and gastrointestinal viruses that go around during the winter and spring seasons. Here’s what we’ve known for a long time about how to stop transmissible disease, but haven’t been motivated enough to do. 1. Wash your hands. Properly. And for goodness’ sake, don’t use the high-powered hand dryers in the bathroom! These blow around whatever germs are left on your hands (and unless you just did a surgical scrub, you still have some on there). Use a paper towel to turn off the faucet (that everyone, including you, used dirty hands used to turn on) and then use a paper towel to open the bathroom door (because not everyone who just did that bothered to wash their hands).

2. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. These aren’t perfect, but they are probably pretty effective on coronaviruses. Been out touching a bunch of stuff other people touched? Use it. 3. Don’t touch your face. The skin is our best infection fighting organ, but the eyes, nose, and mouth are the way viruses find their way inside our bodies. Try to not touch them. 4. If you are sick, stay home. This might be hard for people who have jobs that make it difficult to call out, so I’ll say this clearly for teachers and employers—“LET PEOPLE WHO ARE SICK STAY HOME!” Plan for people to be out so there is enough coverage without making the sick people feel guilty for staying home. And don’t require a doctor’s note for them to do this. It wastes everyone’s time and money; gets whole waiting rooms of people who are in the office for their chronic diseases sick; and doesn’t allow the sick person to stay home and rest, which is probably what they most need. 5. And don’t shake hands until summertime. Maybe.

Plant-Based Milk The Dairy Alternative That Everyone Is Raving About — Oat, Almond, and Soy, oh my! By Shelby Newman

Plant-based milk has become the ‘moove’ these days as cow’s milk goes out of style. In addition to its great taste and health benefits, it can be easily swapped with dairy products we eat in our everyday. Do you put calorie-heavy creamers in your daily coffee? Try using low-calorie and creamy oat milk instead of dairy creamer. Eat a bowl of Wheaties in the morning? Try replacing cow’s milk with some unsweetened almond milk – the cereal will act as a natural sweetener to the milk. Pro-tip: add a splash of plant-based milk when cooking scrambled eggs for a more creamy and fluffy texture. And the best part? There is something for everyone. With an endless list of options, you’re certain to find one that you enjoy. Whether you’re vegan, gluten-free, allergic to nuts, or simply a picky eater, there are countless plant-based milk options that are sure to check off your boxes. There are a number of reasons, health and morality related, that people are making the switch from dairy milk to options like oat, almond, soy, rice, coconut, and even pea milk. Recent scandals involving dairy farms exposed an ugly side to dairy production. Some farms mistreat cows, and even allow them to suffer in inhumane conditions. To support the betterment of farm animals, many people are choosing cow’s milk alternatives. Cow’s milk, despite what they told you in first grade, is actually not great for your health. Instead

18

of improving bone health, it does the opposite by depleting our bones of the calcium it needs. Additionally, a single serving of dairy milk contains as much as 24 milligrams of cholesterol and more than 20 percent of the daily-recommended dose of saturated fat, which is harmful to the heart. Plantbased milk, however, contains no cholesterol and little to no fat. Looking for an extra boost of protein in your diet? Soy milk provides the highest amount of protein of plant-based milk alternatives, while having fewer calories. It can contain up to eight grams of protein per cup, which is equivalent to the amount of protein in a cup of cow’s milk. Soy milk is also considered the most nutritionally similar to cow’s milk, allowing you to reap many of the nourishing benefits of cow’s milk without the detriments. It’s also filled with antioxidants and fiber, which are added bonuses. Oat milk, while also containing protein, has closer to four grams of protein per cup, but its high fiber content makes it richer and more filling than other plantbased milk alternatives. Next time you’re browsing the dairy section at the grocery store, remember that making the switch to plant-based milk is easy. Buying a pint of almond milk this week is a small price to pay in exchange for saving your future self, the planet, and the cows.

7 OUR TOWN

PLACES TO CELEBRATE ST. PATRICK’S DAY IN TAMPA

By Shelby Newman

| TAMPASTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

OUR TOWN

Everyone knows that March is the ultimate month for everything green - spring trees are sprouting little green leaves, grass is regaining its healthy green pigment, and most importantly, green beer is flowing in preparation to celebrate the luckiest day of the year. With St. Patrick’s Day right around the corner, it’s time to figure out what to do for the big day. There’s no need to have the luck of the Irish with this comprehensive list of local events happening on and around St. Patrick’s Day! Whether you want to spend the day with family, or drink the night away with friends, there’s something for everyone. Mayor’s River O’ Green Festival The Mayor’s River O’ Green Festival takes the lead as one of Tampa’s most iconic traditions. And yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like - an outdoor festival on a bright green river! Taking place at Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park, the Hillsborough River will be transformed into the perfect photo op for the green occasion. Besides a great view of the festive river, there will also be live entertainment, kid-friendly games and activities, as well as food trucks (and green beer) (duh). You can even team up for the River O’ Green Scavenger Hunt, which includes a family friendly “hidden leprechaun” hunt along the river. The festival will take place on March 14 at 11am. River O’ Green Gallop Walk, run, or even jig your way through this two-mile course along the green river. This is a great opportunity to watch the dying of the river up close, while also getting an active start to the day! Additionally, all proceeds go toward the Bob Gilbertson Central City YMCA’s Annual Campaign. The race is set to take place on March 14 at 10am at Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park. Rough Riders St. Patrick’s Day Night Parade This late-night parade is the perfect way to end a long day of festivities, or maybe begin a night of excitement! The parade features an array of festive floats and bead throwing. Filled with lights, music, and everything Irish, there’s not a more wild way to celebrate. The fun will begin on March 14, at 8pm in Ybor City, Tampa.

Lucky’s St. Patrick’s Day Pub-Crawl If you’re thirsty for some holiday ‘spirits’, this pubcrawl is the right move. Including two complimentary drinks, exclusive drink specials, and eight bars on the itinerary, you won’t want to miss out on this night of fun. There’s even a costume contest with a $500 cash prize, so make sure you’re wearing green. The event begins on March 14 at 4pm and tickets can be purchased on eventbrite.com. O’Brien’s Irish Pub Block Party If you’re looking for authenticity, what better way to spend the holiday than at an Irish Pub? Better yet, the home of Irish hospitality, O’Brien’s. O’Brien’s is holding their annual St. Patrick’s Day block party, featuring craft beer, bagpipes, and even Irish step dancers! This day-long event is taking place at O’Brien’s Irish Pub on Saturday, March 17 from 11am to 1am. Four Green Fields Restaurant If corned beef and cabbage is your jam, check out Four Green Fields restaurant in Tampa. Named one of the top 100 places in America to drink beer, they pride themselves on being America’s only thatched roof Irish pub. Some people compare it to being in Ireland, but right here in Tampa! The food is consistent with some of the most well-known, classic Irish dishes. Some of the most famous Irish entertainers have even performed at the restaurant. Sip on a fresh pint of Guinness and enjoy some authentic flavors of Ireland. St. Patrick’s Day Cupcake & Cookie Decorating Class at Masaryk Winery Are you an art connoisseur? Even if you’re not, come out to Masaryk Winery to sip some wine and learn all of the skills you need to beautifully decorate baked goods for the holiday. This event is open to all ages, and supplies are included in the price of admission. Special supplies are even available for people with certain food restrictions like gluten-free or vegan. Tickets for the event are available on eventbrite.com. Last year, Tampa was named the fifth best city in the nation for celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. This year, let’s make it first.

PORSCHE TAYCAN Sports Car, Sustainably Redesigned

With its clean, puristic design, the Taycan signals the beginning of a new era.

24

| TAMPASTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

TOYS

“The Taycan links our heritage to the future. It carries forward the success story of our brand – a brand that has fascinated and thrilled people the world over for more than 70 years,” said Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG. The fourdoor sports saloon is a unique package, offering typical Porsche performance and connectivity with everyday usability. At the same time, highly advanced production methods and the features of the Taycan are setting new standards in the fields of sustainability and digitalisation. “We promised a true Porsche for the age of electromobility – a fascinating sports car that not only excites in terms of its technology and driving dynamics, but also sparks a passion in people all over the world, just like its legendary predecessors have done. Now we are delivering on this promise,” emphasises Michael Steiner, Member of the Executive Board of Porsche AG – Research and Development. The first models in the new series are the Taycan Turbo S and Taycan Turbo. They are at the cutting edge of Porsche E-Performance and are among the most powerful production models that the sports car manufacturer currently has in its product range. Less powerful variants of these all-wheel drive vehicles will follow this year. The first derivative to be added will be the Taycan Cross Turismo at the end of next year. By 2022, Porsche will have invested more than six billion euros in electromobility.

Performance meets efficiency The flagship Turbo S version of the Taycan can generate up to 560 kW (761 PS; Taycan Turbo S: combined power consumption 26.9 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions 0 g/km) overboost power in combination with Launch Control, and the Taycan Turbo up to 500 kW (680 PS; Taycan Turbo: combined power consumption 26.0 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions 0 g/km). The Taycan Turbo S accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 2.8 seconds, while the Taycan Turbo completes this sprint in 3.2 seconds. The Turbo S has a range of up to 412 kilometres, and the Turbo a range of up to 450 kilometres (according to WLTP in each case). The top speed of both all-wheel-drive models is 260 km/h.

The Porsche Taycan on the road

current (DC) from the high-power charging network for a range of up to 100 kilometres (according to WLTP). The charging time for five to 80 percent SoC (state of charge) is 22.5 minutes for charging under ideal conditions, and the maximum charging power (peak) is 270 kW. The overall capacity of the Performance Battery Plus is 93.4 kWh. Taycan drivers can comfortably charge their cars with up to eleven kW of alternating current (AC) at home.

Pure exterior design with Porsche DNA With its clean, puristic design, the Taycan signals the beginning of a new era. At the same time, it retains the unmistakable Porsche design DNA. From the front it looks particularly wide and flat with highly contoured wings. The silhouette is shaped by the sporty roofline sloping downward to the rear. The highly sculpted side sections are also characteristic. The sleek cabin, the drawn-in rear C-pillar and the pronounced shoulders of the wings result in a sharply emphasised rear, typical of the brand. There are also innovative elements such as the glass-effect Porsche logo, which has been integrated into the light bar at the rear. With a Cd value from 0.22, the aerodynamically optimised basic shape makes a significant contribution to low energy consumption and thus long range.

Unique interior design with a wide display screen band The cockpit signals the start of a new era with its clear structure and a completely new architecture. The freestanding, curved instrument cluster forms the highest point on the dashboard. This places a clear focus on the driver axis. A central, 10.9-inch infotainment display and an optional passenger display are combined to form an integrated glass band in a black-panel look. All user interfaces have been completely newly designed for the Taycan. The number of classic hardware controls such as switches and buttons has been greatly reduced. Instead, control is intelligent and intuitive – using touch operation or the voice control function, which responds to the command “Hey Porsche”.

The Taycan is the first production vehicle with a system voltage of 800 volts instead of the usual 400 volts for electric cars. This is a particular advantage for Taycan drivers on the road: in just over five minutes, the battery can be recharged using direct

CELEBRITY SOUP

CELEBRITIES

WITH INSURED BODY PARTS When your limbs are your main source of income, you better insure them and insure them well! By Riesa Pascal

From the legs of athletes to the fingers of musicians, celebrities taking out insurance on their body parts is far from being a new thing. In fact, it’s a practice that goes back to at least 1915, when Charlie Chaplin insured his twinkle toes for $150,000 which would be more than $3 million today. Let’s take a look at some other A-list celebrities who have insured their most famous assets.

34

| STYLETOME.COM

CELEBRITY SOUP

Daniel Craig

America Ferrera

While on the set of Quantum Solace, James Bond actor Daniel Craig performed many of his own stunts and came to realize that he was not actually as invincible as Mr. Bond would have us believe. As a result, Craig decided to take out an insurance policy on his whole body that guaranteed him a $9.5 million payout in case he was seriously injured. That may not have been a very Bond-like thing to do, but we certainly don’t blame him!

Julia Roberts isn’t the only celebrity with a 1,000-watt grin! At the time of filming Ugly Betty, America Ferreira became a spokesperson for Aquafresh White Trays, a teeth whitening manufacturer. After Ferrera agreed to work with the company on a new charity campaign, they had her smile insured for £7 million ($10 million). Ferrera spoke of the insurance saying, “It’s very flattering to have my smile insured for $10 million; it’s not something that I ever imagined happening. I’ll try my hardest to take care of it.”

Dolly Parton Country singer-songwriter Dolly Parton is hard to miss for two... err... very large reasons. Her ‘biggest’ assets which she affectionately refers to as “the girls” are her famous 40DD breasts. Just to be sure that nothing bad happens to them, Dolly first had them insured for $600,000 in the 1970s. Today they are insured for a whopping $3.8 million.

Oliver Lewis The fastest violinist in the world knows exactly what his ten best assets are. That’s why Oliver Lewis insured his fingers for $100,000...each! Lewis spoke of his pricey digits saying, “I won’t go chopping up coconuts with a machete. It’s common sense, really. My fingers are the tools of my trade and I’d be lost without them.” Amazingly, Lewis is far from having the most expensive fingers in the world. The Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards had just his guitarstrumming middle finger insured for a cool $1.6 million. My guess is that he also isn’t too fond of cutting coconuts.

Julia Roberts It’s only natural that the star of Mona Lisa Smile would want to protect her pearly whites! Oscarwinner Julia Roberts is one of the highestpaid actresses in the world, and she makes a pretty penny off her ability to light up a room. Fortunately, Roberts won’t be out of pocket if her dazzling smile ever does fade as she’s had her chompers insured for $30 million.

Tom Jones In 2008, Tom Jones added yet another accolade to his already impressive list of career recognitions. The Welsh-born singer can proudly claim to have the most expensive chest hair in the world! (Congratulations?) As bizarre as it sounds, Jones insured the mane of hair on his chest for $7 million, and although his manager claimed that Jones was “working far too hard in the recording studio” for something like that, Lloyd’s of London confirmed that the policy actually existed.

Fernando Alonso Sometimes an outrageous insurance policy is all part of a publicity stunt which was the case for Formula 1 champion Fernando Alonso. Known for his victorious thumbs-up pose, Alonso had his thumbs insured for 10 million euros ($13.3 million) as part of an insurance campaign by Spanish-based bank Santander. The bank spoke of the deal saying Alonso’s thumbs are both essential to F1 driving and “a sign of victory and that everything is under control and wellprotected.”

Heidi Klum A two-million-dollar insurance policy for your legs may sound like a lot of money, but that’s pocket change for former Victoria’s Secret model and Project Runway host Heidi Klum. At almost 5’10”, Klum has strut the catwalk on numerous occasions, but each of her legs are actually insured at different amounts. Her left leg is only worth $1 million because of a tiny scar, whereas her right is worth $1.2 million.

Miley Cyrus Sticking out her tongue has become something of an iconic feature for Miley Cyrus which is why she had it insured for $1 million. The former Disney star began sticking out her tongue as a defense mechanism for when there was a lot of paparazzi around and she didn’t quite know what to do with her face. Cyrus spoke of the habit saying eventually “it became a rebellious, punk rock thing.” Perhaps deep down inside she’s just trying to channel the next celebrity on our list...

Gene Simmons When it comes to a conversation about famous tongues, we would be remiss not to talk about the one and only Gene Simmons. The legendary bassist and vocalist for Kiss has sold more than 100 million albums worldwide and become famous for his iconic tongue which measures in at seven inches long. In fact, Kiss’ God of Thunder had such an impressive tongue that a

popular rumor in the seventies was that he had grafted a cow tongue onto his own to give him some extra length. Needless to say, Simmons decided to have his impressive licker insured for $1 million.

Mariah Carey In 2006, Gillette Razors brought Mariah Carey on as the face of their “Legs of a Goddess” campaign for its Venus razor blades. After landing the contract, Carey had her legs insured for a whopping $1 billion. Yes, you read that right. BILLION. Not Million. Billion, with a “B.” This means Carey’s legs are worth more than our next celebrity who actually uses his for a living.

David Beckham Top soccer players constantly face the risk of career-ending injuries when they’re out on the field, so it makes sense to insure their legs against any mishaps. Case in point, no one can bend it like David Beckham, and at the height of his success, Beckham had his legs insured for $70 million. Portuguese soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo also makes his millions kicking a ball around, and his former team Real Madrid wanted to keep it that way when they insured his golden legs for more than twice as much at $144 million.

A two-million-dollar insurance policy for your legs may sound like a lot of money, but that’s pocket change for former Victoria’s Secret model and Project Runway host Heidi Klum.

DON’T MISS THE BEAT

BILLIE EILISH WHERE DO WE GO? WORLD TOUR By Courtney Caggiano International singing icon Billie Eilish is bringing her Where Do We Go? World Tour to Orlando’s Amway Center on March 10. At the young age of 18, Eilish has championed top40 music with her own somber spin on the indie electronic sound, crafting tracks both melodious and mournful that coax her ethereal voice down a dark, winding road. With her 2019 debut album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, the California-born singer brought her gloomy alternative anthems to the forefront of pop radio and garnered millions of worldwide fans, marking the release the best-performing album of 2019. In January, Eilish and her album stunned at the 2020 Grammy Awards, winning five of the six awards for which she was nominated. With Best Pop Vocal Album, Best New Artist, Album of the Year, and Record and Song of the Year for “Bad Guy,” Eilish is surprisingly just beginning. A Los Angeles native, Eilish was quite at home in an atmosphere of creativity, growing up in a family of musicians and actors, including her famous elder brother, Finneas O’Connell, who produced Eilish’s groundbreaking album in his small bedroom studio. After finding her soulful voice in the Los Angeles Children’s Choir at age eight, the melancholy songstress developed an unforgettable vocal style that would one day capture the attention of a listening world. Prior to creating the album that would lead to her Grammy sweep, Eilish was a simple teenager who had suddenly begun gaining a devoted fanbase with pensive, peculiar lyrics that spoke to the angsty,

the anxious, and the emotional, not running from pressing issues like mental health and heartbreak. Following the achievements of her more pop-driven “Six Feet Under” and “Fingers Crossed,” Eilish shared her airy single “Ocean Eyes,” showcasing her fascinating ability to procure beauty from despondency, as well as her capacity to speak to hearts everywhere—the song surpassed 14 million online streams. Today, Eilish owes her success to the ardent dedication of her fans, whose enthusiasm and affection led to her Where Do We Go? World Tour selling out within only days after tickets went on sale, with 500,000 tickets sold in North America, South America, and Europe within the first hour. The 2020 42-date tour is the artist’s most impressive and visionary tour she has headlined, as it comes on the heels of Eilish’s Grammy wins and the influence of her chart-topping single “Bad Guy.” Perhaps Eilish’s greatest strength is her capability to connect with a generation of music listeners searching for the authentic and sincere. With every song, every lyric, Eilish finds unique ways to relate to her fans, understanding how they are feeling and eager to show the universality of these feelings—no matter how morose they may sound when set to music. Billie Eilish’s Where Do We Go? World Tour is going to be one of the most highly anticipated tour stops at the Amway Center this year, as Eilish’s trendsetting and trailblazing career will surely set the soundtrack of the decade. You won’t want to miss this incredible music event.

PIONEERING SWIMWEAR It took many years, and confidently defiant women, to liberate female beachwear. By Khadejah Khan

As we move into warmer weather, our fashion choices become increasingly lighter and less-covered. The evolution of swimwear endured a similar transformation throughout the ages. This Women’s History Month, we’re celebrating some of the women who pioneered different styles of swimwear, while taking a look back at the trends in history.

Itsy-bitsy to Modesty. The first instance of a modern-day bikini, specifically the bandeau bikini, has been around well before it’s mainstream popularity, as far back as ancient times. In Roman and Greek bathhouses, birthday suits or a two-piece were often worn in women-only bathhouses. Fast forward to the 1700s when beach-going became a leisurely exercise, but getting some color on your skin was unwanted. Therefore, women would wear floor-length, long-sleeved, billowy “bathing gowns” with face-shading bonnets, shawls, and gloves. Women were known during this time to sew weights into the hem of their bathing gowns to prevent it from floating up in the water and showing their legs. Talk about extreme! Victorian Era. When taking a stroll on the boardwalk wasn’t enough, and women actually wanted to jump in the water and have fun, the invention of “bathing machines” was a lifesaver. They were ideal at a time when changing clothes in public was impossible. Basically a cabana on wheels, the bather entered the hut fully dressed and changed into her bathing suit inside. Then, these huts were drawn by horses into the water and would obstruct the view of women swimming from the shore, providing privacy before, during, and after their swim. Bloomin’ Bloomers. Bloomers still subscribed to the “rules” of swimsuits, covered and non-fitting. Except now, puffy, Turkish-style bloomers and dress-length tops were in. These were short-sleeved, knee-length, and often made of flannel to withstand rising up in the water. These eventually evolved into the classic sailor-inspired frills and trims. Lace-up beach and swim shoes were also introduced during this time. Turn of the Swim-tury. In 1907, Australian Annette Kellerman, the inventor of synchronized swimming, was arrested for “indecent exposure” in Boston for wearing a men’s swim suit with stockings underneath. The suit was form-fitting and short-sleeved, daring to show her arms. She argued in front of a judge that restrictive bathing suit laws prevented women from learning how to swim, and it was “like swimming in a ballgown.” She was dismissed of the charges, and the public started ditching their attitudes on the last of Victorian fashion in swimwear.

Gearing Up for Athletes. In 1916, just after the Swedes added swimming and diving events for women to their Olympic program, Jantzen was founded as a new brand of swimwear and changed the term from “bathing suit” to “swimming suit” to justify more revealing women’s suits as athletic as more women joined competitive swimming. Roaring Protests in the ‘20s. The Twenties was a time for rebellion and changing times, which some women saw as an opportunity for body autonomy. American athlete Ethelda Bleibtrey was arrested for “nudity” at Manhattan Beach when she removed her stockings before going swimming. Her arrest caused so much public outrage that her charges were dismissed, and thereafter, women could go swimming without having to wear stockings. Bleibtrey also championed swimming as a sport by getting arrested and spending a night in prison for diving into the Central Park Reservoir to advocate for a swimming pool in the park, and she went on to become a multiplewinning Olympic Gold Medalist in Women’s Swimming. The Bothersome “Swimsuit Police.” Although swimsuits ditched the stockings and sleeveless became the norm, measurement requirements were in effect in many states, like six-inches above the knee. During this decade, many women who didn’t meet the measurement requirements were arrested for refusing to cover up or leave the beach. They’d be hauled away, jailed, and fined. Out-swimming the Boys. In 1926, American Olympic Medalist Gertrude Ederlen became the first woman to swim the English Channel. She cut up her one-piece swimsuit into a two-piece, still before they became mainstream, and covered herself in grease to swim the 35 mile channel in a record-breaking 14 hours and 31 minutes, shattering the previous men’s time by two hours.

until 1946 when a French “lady of the night” was the only one bold enough to model the modern bikini. It was the first garment of its kind that risked going below the navel, and it left little to the imagination. Bikinis went mainstream in the ‘50s after French actress Brigitte Bardot was the first to wear one in a movie. Hollywood and Vogue popularized the idea of swimwear being fashionable, sexy, and glamorous, a trend that continues today. Style Over Literal Substance. With the invention of nylon in the ‘60s, swimwear became tighter and more practical for beach weather. Minds expanded and bikinis shrank in the ‘70s, flaunting more midriff than ever. The ‘80s brought wilder prints, brighter colors, higher leg-lines, and swimsuits plunged deeper in the front and revealed more in the back. Iconic styles emerged from TV stars Pamela Anderson and Carmen Electra on Baywatch. The ‘90s brought more athletic designs from popular sports brands and the premier of tankinis. Mixing and matching tops, bottoms, and prints became popular. New Millennium, Who Dis? With changing attitudes, body ideals, acceptance, and positivity at the turn of a new century, swimwear has come to reflect the individual and represents all kinds of bodies. Cover-ups and shawls became fashionable and stylish, the burkini was introduced in 2005, and rashguards and surfwear is more widely available. We can still see the influence of swim trends throughout history in our modern swimwear, like cut-outs and sailor-frills. Most important, swimwear is available in all sizes! Whatever your swimwear fashion and level of comfortability, never forget that it is your right to choose what you want to wear to the beach, or any place for that matter. Remember and learn from the many women throughout time who paved the way for the choices that we have today. Happy Women’s History Month!

Birthing the Modern Bikini. In the decades after, as swimsuits became smaller, two-pieces popular, and swimming was widely enjoyed by many, the demand for them grew. Movies and films depicted more fashionable swimwear, like waist-high bottoms, halter tops, ruching, and sweetheart necklines. It wasn’t

SPRING 2020 FASHION GUIDE By Shelby Newman

This season’s fashion is coming in hot off the runway, literally. From prints and patterns to material and fit, everyone can find something they love. As the temperature rises, use this as a guide to success for your transitioning spring wardrobe. Turtle Shell Jewelry Tortoise shell is the new leopard. Tortoise shell earrings and glasses have taken over the runway, and we think it’s for good. Give your look a contemporary pop of excitement with this fresh print.

Bermuda Shorts These bad boys aren’t only for vacationing dads. We like to think of this trend as the evolution of biker shorts. Style with a simple tee and baseball cap for the perfect “tom-girl next-door” look. Alternatively, pair with flats and a button up blouse for a more preppy and done-up look. Puffy Sleeves Your childhood dreams of becoming a princess, come true. Your days of acceptably wearing a Cinderella gown out of the house are long over, but your elegant, princess-inspired style doesn’t have to be. Puffy sleeves are all the rage for tops and dresses. This look is ideal for a bold and feminine woman. Layering Dresses Over Tops The perfect look for transitioning your closet to the warmer season. This iconic style was seen over and over last fall, paired with a turtleneck and a

spaghetti strap dress. As the temperature goes up, you can replace the long sleeves with short sleeves. Layer with a more breathable material dress like denim or corduroy for bonus points. Dr. Marten Boots These boots are itching to make a statement, and boy, do they. Not only do they go with nearly every outfit no matter the season, but word on the street is they are the most comfortable shoes you will ever own. They also come in countless colors, patterns, and styles, so everyone can find a pair that works for them. Criss-Cross Buttoned Denim Jeans Have you ever had an old pair of jeans that was just a couple of sizes too big in the waist? Now you can salvage them with this hot trend! Instead of tossing your big old denim jeans, fold them tightly at the waist and create a new button hole where they fall on your side. If your not a DIY kind of gal, you can purchase them pre-made from retailers like AGOLDE. And yes, we do pay more to get them like that, grandma. Tassels Like the kind you wear at graduation, except now it’s not just for your head. The more fringe, the more fun. And that’s why we’re putting these things on everything - earrings, tops, jeans, and even bags. Tassels not only add movement, but they give a softness to your look that is perfect for the springtime.

TAMPA VETERINARY HOSPITAL Hannah Kleinman, DVM Dr. Kleinman was born and raised in South Tampa, so she knows how much her fellow Tampanians love and care for their pets. She loves our South Tampa community and is proud to be a part of Tampa’s oldest veterinary practice. Prior to joining Tampa Veterinary Hospital, Dr. Kleinman was awarded a position at Blue Pearl Veterinary Partners here in Tampa where she continued to grow her skills in surgery, internal medicine, critical care and a wide array of emergency services. She is a graduate of the School of Veterinary Medicine at Ross University and did her clinical studies at University of Florida’s College of Veterinary Medicine. Special interests include dermatology, endocrinology and internal medicine. She has helped shape the implementation of next-level technologies at Tampa Veterinary Hospital, including the addition of veterinary telemedicine through the use of an app called AirVet. She strongly believes technology will help her and her colleagues not only better diagnose and treat illnesses, but also communicate more effectively and efficiently with clients. Pet parents can expect compassionate care from Dr. Kleinman offered with confidence and sincerity. Whether your pet needs a routine exam or is suffering from a chronic condition, Dr. Kleinman has the knowledge, skills and experience you and your pet expect and deserve. Dr. Kleinman credits her parents for challenging herself each day and to set lofty goals in both her personal and professional life while also being passionate and community-minded. She enjoys the opportunity to donate her time and volunteer with local petrelated charities and shelters. When she’s not seeing patients or volunteering, Dr. Kleinman can be found walking her Doodles named Hattie and Monty along Bayshore, riding her horse, Ari, or spending a quiet day reading or cooking.

TAMPA’S

TAMPA VETERINARY HOSPITAL Melissa Webster, DVM As the owner of Tampa Veterinary Hospital, Dr. Melissa Webster has led Tampa’s oldest veterinary hospital through a period of unprecedented growth. Webster is the third owner of the hospital at the iconic Kennedy Boulevard location, and has grown the practice from 15 employees in 2004 to a current team of close to 40. She is truly thankful for the loyal patronage from the South Tampa community and the passion and dedication of her pet care team. Dr. Webster received her undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University before earning her veterinary degree from the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Georgia. She has held numerous positions on local veterinary boards and was named Veterinarian of the Year in Hillsborough County in 2006. In addition to seeing patients at Tampa Veterinary Hospital, she also owns Highland Pet Hospital in Lakeland and is a member of the Florida Animal Technical Advisory Council for the Department of Agriculture. Her career spans more than a quarter century, and her passion for strengthening the animal-human bond remains as strong as ever. She is a skilled surgeon and diagnostician with a compassionate touch and warm heart. It’s no surprise that guests bring their pets from as far as Atlanta to see her. Dr. Webster also welcomes many species of pets that other veterinarians don’t see. She loves seeing reptiles, birds, rabbits and many other ‘non-traditional’ pets. She has a new found passion for veterinary reproduction, as her Lakeland facility is considered one of the top clinics in Florida for reproductive services. When she’s not seeing patients, Dr. Webster enjoys fishing, horses, traveling, taking her Chocolate Lab to the dog park and playing with her Jack Russell and French Bulldog, but their level of energy pales in comparison to what Dr. Webster exhibits every day in her two veterinary hospitals.

I grew up the youngest of 4 children in sunny south Florida, and always knew I wanted to become a veterinarian. Throughout middle and high school, I volunteered at various veterinary clinics and went to the University of Florida for my undergraduate degree. I followed up my studies at Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. While there, I was lucky enough to work with all kinds of animals ranging from dogs and cats, to cattle and horses, and even marine mammals and wildlife.

After veterinary school, my family, both two-legged and four-legged, settled in Tampa where I completed a small animal internship and then started working in general practice. While practicing, I was fortunate enough to become aware of how special it was to help owners cope with the hardships in making decisions about their beloved pets’ end of life care. In 2018, I joined Lap of Love Veterinary Hospice and dedicated my life to helping families and their furry family members.

I consider it a true honor to help families find peace with one of the most selfless decisions they will ever make. I have found my passion in life and am blessed to perform good and profound work every single day.

DVM (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine)

LAKE SEMINOLE ANIMAL HOSPITAL Dr. Jeffrey Berberick, Dr. Abigail O’Connor, Dr. Michael Rumore, Dr. Veronica Brenes-LaRoche Longevity matters. Lake Seminole Animal Hospital has been helping pets for more than 57 years, with the third generations of some families trusting their pets to them. They appreciate the trust, as well as effort that some people make to drive from other counties and cities to see them. The longevity occurs with the staff as well, with many being part of the LSAH family for more than a decade. Owner Dr. Michael Rumore believes in his staff; “Our staff is so loyal because they believe in our mission; all of us came into this field because we really wanted to help animals, and its fulfilling to be able to go home every night knowing you did some real good in the universe.” The nurses and client care specialists are an important part of the mix. “While our doctors are some of the most knowledgeable and skilled, the level of care they provide is multiplied by the excellent staff that supports them,” Dr. Rumore continued. “The team of doctors really work as a team, and the collaboration helps – they aren’t a bunch of individual doctors working separately. Built in second opinions are part of the system.” The skill level of LSAH is simply exceptional, the breadth of experience ranges from rural Pennsylvania farm work to animal shelters in India and all over the United States. “The doctors and nurses are so excited to learn some new advanced medical technique, but then don’t hesitate to get on the floor with a puppy, or and older pup, who is struggling to get around. They all just feel so much and want to help.” Much has changed over the last half century. Digital x-rays and imaging, advanced testing and new treatments have allowed them to help pets in

ways they never imagined. The technology and medical progress has been huge, but even more is our understanding of the psychology of dogs and cats. “We work so much harder these days to keep pets comfortable, pain free and less stressed, especially during their visits here.” Whether it’s for a wellness check up or because a furry friend is very sick, trying to make their visit easier for the pets and their parents is important. LSAH continues to be locally and privately owned. “So much emphasis is being placed on shopping local, but its becoming harder and harder to find veterinary care that’s not owned by a national corporation. Unfortunately with a little digging, many people are just finding out that what they thought was a local business is no longer the “mom and pop” operation they thought is was. “It’s different when you live and work in your own community, and the strings aren’t being pulled by a board a thousand miles away,” says Dr. Rumore. That’s why LSAH has always been involved in the community, helping local shelters and rescues, as well as founding Nell’s Fund, which helps care for sick and injured homeless pets and finds them forever families locally. “I feel so blessed to be able to work at Lake Seminole Animal Hospital,” said Dr. Rumore. “Years ago we had a wonderful client give us a painting of a cabin lit up in the dark woods. She said LSAH reminded her of that cabin, a beacon of light for her when she was scared for her beloved fur baby. We work every day to continue to be that beacon of light for pet owners. We know how much people love their four legged kids, and want to be there for them when they need us.”
